This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would like to rate this game higher, but the fact that the developers forced you to play it how they wanted you to hurts it greatly in my opinion. The premise is excellent and the story was written and directed pretty well, except as mentioned, they do not give the player enough choices. The visuals are excellent and I got immersed and played it straight through. I was just left disappointed at the end that I was forced into certain moves or choices. So much wasted potential. I am sure they are setting it up for either a sequel or DLC, but I don't like games that leave me feeling like this one did. Try it for yourself though, it had enough highs I may play it a second time. Expand

Great game, wonderful setting and story. Visual effects are really stunning. I would really like to play a sequel to learn more about the world. Indeed it's not that long, however, it's really an exciting adventure, full of events and story twists. Absolutely enjoyed it. It's a pity though that a couple of scenes repeat each other in a game this short, it would be nice to have them unique.

This game is a cinematic experience which didn't deserve all the hatred. It does has a few problems though. The game has some pacing issues between each chapter and there is a lot of QTE's in this game. Those are the cons that I've experienced with the game. The pro's are that this is the most graphically impressive game I've seen on a console to date. Along with the story and voice acting are standout superb. The gameplay is good enough that it's passible but still not the greatest. The weapons/technology are so cool like the arc gun and the incinerator. This game is not the best game in the world but it has potential to make an even greater game when it's already done that. When the sequel comes along a longer story, replayability and less QTE's will be resourceful to make this a true masterpiece Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

There is several things to like about the game. Firstly, its graphics. It is straight up amazing. Every place, character and location looks atmospheric, stunning and detailed. Every place, character and location looks atmospheric, stunning and detailed. It is definitely the best looking game in this generation. Secondly, the voice acting is superb. It also has one of the most unique setting I have ever seen in recent years. However, besides these, most other things fall flat. Firstly, The Order: 1886 try to get many things merged into one together, but none of them were really outstanding. Cover-based shooting is okay, but generic, weapons are overpowered, AI is relatively not smart, pathetic enemy types. Its stealth also feel half-finished. and I have no idea why they even include some puzzle-solving in this game. There is some great moment found in this game, but they are very often too far between. The game also feels linear, you are often forced to do what the game told you to do. You have no choice but to do so. Labeled as a cover-based shooter I actually spent a lot of the time watching cutscenes, which is acceptable. You walk and initiate another cutscene, well I don't really like that. This is also a cinematic experience, as what RAD has promoted. Therefore they add a lot of Quick Time Events (QTE). I do believe that it can help players to further immerse into the story. However, if every action required you to press button then it become something tiring. Most importantly, I don't found playing this game fun. It is straight up boring. The campaign last for 7 hours, which is short when compared with other games in the market. For a already boring game with such length, a multiplayer option would be awesome as it can effectively extend the game's lifespan. Unfortunately it didn't has any. It is really a pity because it have a lot of potential to become a 4-player co-operative games. Even the gameplay aren't done right, the story can still saves the game. It is pretty good and quite engaging. It also has a rich back story, However, for such as a short game, the story is under-developed and there is a huge cliffhanger in the ending of the game. Disappointing. The repetitive color tone can also be a problem. It has made every places feel like the same. Overall it is Crysis 3 again, another tech demo with superb graphics and pathetic length. While Crysis 3 gets its gameplay and multiplayer right. The Order didn't. To me it is surprisingly disappointing. It's hard to believe that the creator of Daxter and God of War will make such a under-performing game. If they planned a sequel (They probably does considering that cliffhanger), I hope they can make the game more rich in content Expand

That means, if isn't a too bad story at al, but the way it is told is unlucky and not satisfying, and the ending is really abrupt, too many open questions or not told strings of the whole plot.
The gameplay was fun, but in the end only pretty solid, because the developer missed to give it the last punch - especially in the beginning it feels very clunky and I needed to work myself in a bit, but when u got used to the gameplay and the area allowed it, u really could enjoy the gunfights and change fast between cover, going into a fight with ur fists and blowing up the enemies. This was really funny with the thermit gun, but in general there were bunch of weapons u get from the game, there was nothing bad about the variety or numbers of weapons.

In the end, I am sure the game had much more potential it could use, and I hope for a Sequel which makes it better, because the franchise could be a big deal.

There is enough content to satisfy most gamers. This is just different type of game with more emphasis on story and visuals. It is obvious that the developers put a lot of care and work into this game. I do recommend this game for PS4 owners. It is beautiful game with interesting (albeit predictable story) and good few hours of gameplay. Giving this game low scores is not fair. I mean you must pay $20 to go and see two hour 3d movie. This game is much more than two hours for just $60. I think this is a great deal! Expand

I would have been perfectly happy to buy this game if it was $15-20, because that's the value that its worth to me. If I spend $60 on a game or other media, I expect it to give me at least 30-40 hours worth in the long run.

One last note: I cannot believe they ended the game the way they did. I thought I still had maybe 1/4 of the game left to go, but it just ENDED abruptly. What worries me is that they intend to fill the remainder with DLC. If that's the case, I'll just watch it on Youtube. It makes me sad that companies are purposely leaving out critical creative and story content only to sell it later on.

Such a disappointment. I looked forward to The Order 1886 since it's reveal in E3 2013, a dark and gloomy London set in 1886, with the hint of werewolves, mixed with steampunk, futuristic alternate universe weapons mixed into a underdeveloped and glib land.

Such a disappointment. I looked forward to The Order 1886 since it's reveal in E3 2013, a dark and gloomy London set in 1886, with the hint of werewolves, mixed with steampunk, futuristic alternate universe weapons mixed into a underdeveloped and glib land.

It seemed like the new property that I never knew I wanted, unique and beautiful, a 3ps shooter with cover mechanics and a new order of knights in a semi modern world.

However, what The Order 1886 is, is a quicktime-event driven movie, with the occasional shootout. Something I've always made fun of Resident Evil 5 of being, but TO1886 has taken it so many steps further, you barely even need a controller. At least RE5 has levels you traverse yourself and have to avoid enemies... TO1886 is mostly self controller, you can put down the controller for minutes at a time. The only time you'need to pick it up again is to press a few buttons for a quicktime event, or to walk - very slowly - to a door and to press triangle to open it. There is no real need to explorer anything, the game is extremely linear, you can only go forwards, you can look at a few photos and documents that really don't add anything at all to the game.
The only time you'll actually need to play is either in the human ambushes where you'll take cover and fire a few dozen times, or the rare werewolf fights which are a combination of quicktime events and a few shoots as they charge at you for a few seconds.

Aside from that the game will play itself. The level design is stunning, as someone that knows Whitechapel, Embankment and BlackFriars well, this game is a recreation...but seeing as you will never be able to explore the levels they seem like a waste of time for the creators. The story is somewhat interesting, but honestly you're better off just watching Kingsman. The few characters taht are actually somewhat interesting (mostly due to having interesting motioncap/voice actors have absolutely no closure, the characters are just forgotten as the game plays out. The ending is one of the most abrupt and anti-climatic game endings in the history of gaming, and I knew how many levels there were in the game (16), yet it still came out of nowhere, it feels like it's only halfway through...terribly pointless. Some of the levels are nothing but a few quicktime events, and some only take 10 minutes to complete. This is a short and autonomous game, and anything that is introduced that even remotely seems interesting leads nowhere.

The whole expereience feels incredibly episodic, and yet if a sequel ever comes out there's no way in hell I'd spend more money than I did. This should never have been advertised as a triple A title, £50-£60 for a quicktim e movie with no ending is the greatest con in videogame history.

A tragedy, as all this game had to be is a more open world London in 1886, with threat of werewolf, and proper battles maybe even some puzzle elements. There should be no quicktime events in a game except maybe boss fights, or level traversal. They certainly shouldn't outweigh the rest of the gameplay. And when your cutscenes take more time to watch than the game takes to be played you have some serious directorial issues going on.

I just want to add at the end of my review a little mention of terrible controls. I've never seen the ability to run around a level so **** up. You can't hold run un as you typically would in games.. it's a toggle. Sometimes the toggle will work sometimes it wont, and you'll never know when. A lot of the time you're forced to walk through the game without being able to run, then when you are able to run it's a real pain toggling the run. Sometime pressing it once triggers and again turns it off, other times pressing it twice actually seems to speed up the run. The run will stop working if you reach stairs, and other times the run will just turn itself off for no apparent reason. if you get to a long corridor it's a 50/50% chance whether you'll be allowed to run through it, and if you're in the middle of battle and you want to run away, pray, and you'll have more chance of it working than if you press the button.
I can only believe they nerfed the run just so that it takes longer to complete this tiny little game. if I were allowed to run more, I'd have completed it 2 hours sooner.

Do NOT buy this game, as once you finish it you'll never want to touch it again. There's nothing to it so you wont want to replay. Borrow it, rent it, steal it, because when you get halfway through the game and it suddenly rolls credits and you realise you completed it, you'll not be as sad as I am that I lost £50.

I will first start with the positives. The gunplay was solid and responsive, the guns were fun especially the "special" guns in the game. The gameplay aspect of this game wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special either. And suprisingly, I wasn't wowed by the graphics of this game, it looked too grainy and movie like for me (*shrugs*). Now the negatives, which I thought outweighed the positives of this game. The story didn't pick up for me until like the last few chapters of the game, which was a bummer. I was bored to death by the story during the first half of the game. The cutscenes were mildy irritating, but really p*ssed me off when it jumped to a cutscene just to finish me climbing down the ladder. A lot of the game has you walking ( and no you can't run which also p*ssed me off), and after walking for 5 minutes it goes into a cutscene; like really?! Other than that there is absolutely no replay value at all, you're looking at a 5-8 hour game, maybe 10 depending on your skill and playstyle. Even a tack on multiplayer would'nt had hurt, as the shooting mechanics and guns were probably the best thing in the game, they couldn't had possibly messed that up could they? But yeah, I really wished the dev's would've focused more on "innovative gameplay" rather than making a movie, and the blacksight and unique guns were a great foundation to had build upon, but the finished product just wasn't great for a game. All i can reccomend is a rent at this point... Expand

The story isn't anything mind exploding, but not bad either... it just feels like it was cut off. After finishing the game and seeing the credits start rolling confused me a little since I was expecting at least one more chapter.

The gameplay itself is great, since movement is precise and you don't accidentally do anything that you didn't mean to.

My biggest two complains about this game both take 1 point of the final score of this game.
First is the amount of quick time events in this game. Before the first time you're introduced to that concept of the game, I already thought **** There's going to be QTE's in this game". It's just annoying.
There are a lot of button smashing moments in this game too, when a simple "click once" would have been enough.

The other one of the two complains is how much it felt like Uncharted. Sure, the gameplay was amazing, but I just felt like I was playing Uncharted: 1886. I was expecting a new game... a fresh new title, but no.

I'm happy with short video-games. But this game does feel actually too short. If the narrative was tighter and didn't end on a cliffhanger, then I'd be probably a little more happy — or at least 2 more hours of gameplay would have been kinda nice. This is probably the biggest flaw I think the game actually has. The game length.

On to the pros. The gameplay is quite nice, intense, third-person cover/shooter action. I really enjoy the weight/feel of the guns we were using. The setting is **** amazing. The social political topics are also v neat. The characters are all very intriguing and the whole atmosphere and vibbe the game displays is really intimate and good. The QTE are not that bad, in all honesty. They do actually create for quite a nice, immersing, experience in this very narrative heavy game.

I need this game to have a sequel. I want that so badly. There is a **** tone of potential for a follow-up. I really hope (in the future) that this studio can, HONEST TO GOD, finish this game's complete narrative.

This game at least is not pretending to be something that it isn't.

This game has hands down best visuals ever seen in gaming world - far better than anything I have ever seen even on PC. And I am not a console player by origin.

Story is intense, and everything in game is oriented to tell it in a action-movie kinda a way. It was done with pure perfection. Flawless.

Transition between action scenes and pure game is so great that often you don't know is the cut scene over.

QTE is done great with subtle signs informing you what to do.

A.I.? Please, any game to this date has same "whack-a-mole" artificial intelligence, and we are still far from - as I recall - any real A.I. that could make up for humans as opponents.

This game is made to enjoy it, not to look at flaws in part of the game that can't be done better anyways.

    All in all,

Graphics, models, audio, gameplay, gamestyle, storyline, cut-scenes, setting...all 10/10

There is not a single thing in this game that is done wrong.

This is good way to move forward the gaming industry.

Sorry to see such bad reviews.

I know many games that are rated as MASTERPIECE from critics, that suffer from same issues as this game - and are not bashed for it.

I believe developers of this game have stepped some toes or haven't done the hyping part in accordance to today standards - since that can be the only reason for underwhelming grades.

I really suggest you try this one out.

If you like it, buy it.

Things like this deserve to be rewarded!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The order:1886 is held back by some deep flaws. The reason these flaws exist is because the order seems to have been made solely to be a technical showcase of the PS4. The game is pretty short, clocking in at about 6 hours for me. The length of the game is what most people hate on the order for, and that's not necessarily a baseless complaint since there is very little replay value as it is very easy on it's highest difficulty setting and there is no type of new game plus or multiplayer. Sure not every game needs stuff like that, but if they don't then they better have a descent length campaign and/or very high quality campaign and the order has neither. The orders story is slightly above average, and the graphics are incredible, but both are held back by a lack of stuff to do and gun combat that's "eh" at best. Even if I'm being very critical of the order, I'd still like to see a sequel for the game. This game had potential and without getting too deep into spoilers, the story seems to have a lot of intriguing setup for a game that would likely be called The order:1887, as the game ends on a sort of disappointing cliffhanger right as the year 1886 comes to a close. The order would be a fine game to get if you want to look at a lot of eye candy for a few hours, but if you expect much else then you will be disappointed. Expand

The gameplay is more of what you would expect from 3rd person shooter, and is mechanically sound. Gunplay feels nice and there is a good enough variety of weapons to choose from, its just unfortunate that the most interesting and unique are limited in their use and appearance throughout the game. the cover mechanics are serviceable but nothing great compared to games like Gears of War. There is definitely a good system in place to build upon in terms of gameplay.

Now the story was pretty good overall, and i found myself enjoying it throughout, the pacing can be inconsistent at times though. I just wish that the the whole Lycan aspect of the story was more played out and got more attention, instead of being more of a back drop.

The Order: 1886 was a fun game with a pretty good story that could definitely be expanded upon in the future and featured solid gameplay mechanics. Unfortunately their are no other modes or things to do to extend the good gameplay, and i feel like the framework is in place to make a great sequel, if and when they decide to do so.

That said, the guns are varied, creative, and fun to use. The shooting is quite good, and the game feels good to play ; because ultimately, The Order plays well, and is successful in achieving what it sets out to do. Also, the game does have some fun and novel game mechanics, and it is therefore a shame that it never truly expanded on them, nor leveraged them in any significant way.

Audio-visuals wise, it has very few equals, and its cinematographic qualities are of the highest order.
The story is well told, the cut-scenes are directed well, and the acting is top notch. Overall, I found myself immersed and engaged in the story it was telling, which is not something that can be said about most games.

Furthermore and perhaps more surprisingly - after playing it on hard and taking my time with it - I have found the game to be of reasonable length - say 10h - and I honestly have no complaint in that department. In the light of my experience with the game, the sabotaging campaign this game was victim of at release is truly disgraceful.

And at this point in the review, I feel I should open a parenthesis and point out the degree to which the gaming press is inconsistent in its treatment of game releases. Suffice to think of the critical reception that shallow and repetitive games such as 'Hellblade' and 'Quantum break' enjoyed to illustrate my point.

Why is one of the worst torture sessions I have ever had to endure - 'What happened to Edith Finch' - held as a masterpiece then, when all you do is walk around someone's house and interact with a bunch of boring and telegraphed toddler rated mini-games?

What obscure set of criteria makes or breaks a game in terms of critical reception in this industry ?

I guess, the logical conclusion is that game ratings and reception are much more effective at revealing something about the critical landscape, than a meaningful measure of a game's merit, and well... this sucks.

    End of the tangent.

In the end, when it is all said and done, I had a fairly good time with "The order: 1886" and despite the limited scope of its gameplay, I find myself glad I played it. Simply put, if you feel like shooting stuff, and If the world, lore, and overall creative design find grace in your eyes - like they did in mine - go right ahead, you won't regret it.

The character animations, clothing, environment and scenery are beautiful. There's no image tear no framerate issues, nothing. There are no load times but I'm fairly certain they're hidden behind the walking sections. One of my first gripes is the aimless strolling sections where the game forces you to drink up the scenery, it won't let you run/jog you can't even draw your gun. These sections are literally throughout the entire game. Strolling aside, The Order is cut scene heavy, not long cut scenes, MGS4 long, but lots and lots of little ones. Giving credit where it is due is that the cutscene graphics and the gameplay graphics are identical and the change over is un-noticeable, this can however be a problem because there is no indicator to let you know you're back in control. The story was okish, it wasn't very complete and the sprung stuff in from outta no where purely as a plot device and gave zero explanation. The weapons are pretty good, the thermite rifle is freakin awesome fun, other than that they're the standard affair. Sound-wise its bang on, the music, voice acting, and sound effects are also amazing. The game is QTE heavy and they do what they're supposed to do and I still think they're a major design cop-out. Overall, The Order:1886 reminds me a lot of Beyond: Two Souls - An extremely well presented interactive movie with zero replayability and zero game play - It is a short game, about 6 hours, but the characters are alive and it's a very, very easy platinum Expand

What harmed the game were the marketing and trailers. The given setting was something like: You are a descendant of the knights of the round table fight supernatural enemies like werewolf's in mankind's struggle to survive in the Victoria era Britain with weapons designed from Nikola Tesla. Just pure awesomeness. But the game is a bit different. It is more about humans and political plots or agendas with supernatural elements. It is not a bad story and it is engaging enough to kept you playing. It is more that you have other expectation and it is not that original or engaging enough to write home about. Also there are some strange character decisions and inconsistencies in the story when you think about it. The second reason that harmed the game that it is really short. Maybe 8 hours with a lot of cut scenes added to this time. The gameplay is O.K but again nothing outstanding or revolutionising. I just realize that I have exactly the same views as some critiques. They say it was like a play it safe launch title with no remarkable (gameplay) features and excellent graphics. I think this is a fine conclusion as this is everything to say. Overall a game that could be a top hit with more efforts in gameplay and story. I can see a franchise with lots of potential here and hope they will improve on the sequel. Expand

Normally I'm not a fan of long cinematics in games, but I found myself drawn into The Orders' because of the phenomenal voice acting and excellent character animations. That being said, the storytelling isn't fantastic. Gallahad himself isn't all too interesting as a protagonist, and there was little to no character development throughout the entire journey. Character deaths never seemed to pack an emotional punch.

While quicktime events are present, I feel as though some reviewers have blown them wildly out of proportion. In terms of their quantity, they seem to be in between The Last of Us and a Telltale game. I never felt as though they detracted from the experience, but I certainly would have prefered more third-person gameplay - especially when fighting Lykens. The cover shooting is certainly capable, but switching between spots is often clunky as Gallahad will often "stick" to surrounding cover instead of moving to another area. The four "futuristic" weapons are all interesting and fun to use (I enjoyed using the Thermite Rifle the most).

All in all, if Ready at Dawn listens to their audience amd delivers a more gameplay-oriented experience in a future sequel, they could have something very interesting to offer.

The shooting or adventure parts were nicely dispersed between the scenes that let the story unfold. It felt like a natural progression, and I was really happy not having to loot, look for secrets, have a million side quests, and never feel like I did everything.

For those looking for an interesting game for a few nights, with a nice story, I heartily recommend this game. For those looking for hours and hours of shooting, blasting, swordplay and random quests, stay away!

It's main problem and what I think the cause for a lot of people to hate on the game for is the amount of time the game does offer and basically take to complete and some areas that are lacking that should be and could have been a whole lot more if they really wanted and hopefully with the next title/sequel which I feel it deserves they improve upon and deliver just that.

Now I for one understood that it would be a linear experience and was ok with that as many people are but of course as long as the storytelling and gameplay was good that's not an issue and doesn't make it a bad game for being so. I thought this game delivered on the type of game it was meant to be and did it right for most part but of course not entirely and was lacking in areas that they could have done a whole a lot more in and done better at. For example things like a better looting system would have been better for the game and gave players more reason to replay to try and find or get particular loot or items that they may have missed on other playthroughs. Another thing would be a more open and deeper UI that allowed use of more then just the couple weapons and grenade that it did along with adding an inventory for your character to store, carry, and allow the character to select from. Lastly just overall made game's main story along with its world bigger and longer then what it is and offers atm which is short for a lot of people and for a single player game in general which I hope and feel some new DLC that adds to and expands the games main story soon could and would help add more much needed hours and replay value to this unique game.

I would have scored this game higher if it weren't for the lack of content because that's what I feel is the biggest letdown of this game not the other stuff I mentioned that I could honestly have lived without and more of suggestions for what I would do better and improve upon for next title/sequel. I mean under ten hours to complete this type of game is just unacceptable and shame for a game that isn't bad and really has a lot more potential.

I think a lot of the reviews here are based on the game's performance against pre-conceived expectations rather than what the game actually accomplishes.

In that regard, I feel like this game is better reviewed not as a traditional game but as an interactive movie. Because that's really what this is. The graphics and production are insanely realistic. People keep talking about The Witcher 3's graphics, but The Order completely blows them out of the water. The facial movements, environments, characters--they're all unbelievably detailed and life-like. This game sets the bar for how amazing next gen games can look. The story is engaging and unique, and it feels like you're controlling the main character of a movie. Overall this game accomplishes a ton, and it's fantastic.

Having said that, if you treat this as a traditional game, then you will be disappointed. It does not have a multiplayer function. The combat isn't as well executed as other games. The content is limited to 5-7 hours. You've already read about all of those things, among others, and they're not wrong.

The thing is, who says all games have to follow the same format? Aren't people getting tired of the generic open-world concept where there is a small main story (which doesn't tend to require many hours of play to complete) and then dozens of hours dumped in as side-quests to keep you busy? I can see the argument for saying this game may not be worth the $60 retail price, and that's fair. But I think there is absolutely value in what this game achieved, and I think it probably deserved a better fate than the one it got from the gaming world. 8/10

This game has gotten a bum rap. I listened to the critics and stayed away from this game. It then was released for $19. I picked it up from Gamestop for $17. The game is beautiful. It really shows what the PS4 can do. The story is amazing. The backdrop of London is great. I see where action enthusiasts want more action and less movie but this is not a multiplayer fps. It was fun and for $17 it was a steal. Expand

I feel like one of the very few who enjoyed this game, but I understand why a lot of people don't. I bought this game on sale for $10, and I wouldn't recommend paying more than that. Those were the only things that bothered me, but some things I didn't mind that other people might are:

    Pointless interactions with paper/documents
    Almost no replay value
    Quick time event bosses
Both main bosses use the exact same quick times
extremely repetitive attack patterns from the werewolf-like enemies

Picked this up pre-owned and loved every minute of it. Lots of fun to play and looks amazing. The only problem was its length. A little too short so I'm glad I didn't pay full price.

The game itself is very much a Gears of War clone. It has a smaller variety for enemy types than Gears which was a bit disappointing but other than that if you're looking for a fun 3rd person shooter pick

I hope this game gets a lengthier sequel.

I played this recently and I have to say. It was a really good movie. Because that is exactly how it felt when I played it. The graphics are stunning for starters, and the story surrounding The Order. But! There isn't actually that much gameplay. When you do play though it is enjoyable. The different weapon types give this Third-Person Shooter its own little flare. Sadly the game is alsoI played this recently and I have to say. It was a really good movie. A limp story, repetitive combat and lack of agency take the shine off a great technical achievement. [May 2015, p.64]

Visually it's everything you could have hoped for, but the compromises required to reach that fidelity, and moments of narcissism as a result of it, are hugely damaging. [Apr 2015, p.81]

Although the storyline invokes weighty subjects like colonialization and socioeconomic inequality, it fails to address these topics in any substantive way. Ditto the game’s dialogue, which contains flourishes of eloquence that founder because, as pleasing as the words are to the ear, the actions they affect have no bite.
