How can you bring out a game like this without having a real ending.

only to finish with an open ending so you can release a sequel.

    a 7/10 because i enjoy the game.

Normally I'm not a fan of long cinematics in games, but I found myself drawn into The Orders' because of the phenomenal voice acting and excellent character animations. That being said, the storytelling isn't fantastic. Gallahad himself isn't all too interesting as a protagonist, and there was little to no character development throughout the entire journey. Character deaths never seemed to pack an emotional punch.

While quicktime events are present, I feel as though some reviewers have blown them wildly out of proportion. In terms of their quantity, they seem to be in between The Last of Us and a Telltale game. I never felt as though they detracted from the experience, but I certainly would have prefered more third-person gameplay - especially when fighting Lykens. The cover shooting is certainly capable, but switching between spots is often clunky as Gallahad will often "stick" to surrounding cover instead of moving to another area. The four "futuristic" weapons are all interesting and fun to use (I enjoyed using the Thermite Rifle the most).

All in all, if Ready at Dawn listens to their audience amd delivers a more gameplay-oriented experience in a future sequel, they could have something very interesting to offer.

One must play this game from start to finish to truly understand the story, its good never the less. The characters and dialogue are excellent, I personally find the characters to be very interesting. Main character is likable!

    Cons:

lacklustre ending, geared towards a sequel, which I don't mind.
QTE can be slight glitchy and underwhelming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game, but flawed. Should that put you off playing it? No, definitely not.

As well as being a graphical masterpiece, as so many have mentioned, it is a moreish game that has satisfying run and gun sections and suitably frustrating sections that make you want to return your console, controllers and games to where you bought them from or throw them all in the nearest river. i.e. the 'stealth' sections are brutally unforgiving and players could find themselves re-treading ground in a continuous loop for a few of the sections. Also, the difficulty curve does exist with some of the enemies and a lot of the time you could find yourself victim to a Shot Gunner similar class of heavily armed foe who rush you and have armor to protect them in some cases. It's not all cannon fodder.

There are a lot of cut scenes. The game wants to immerse you in the story and the world in which it is set. It achieves that with mixed success but when it succeeds, which is more often than not, wow! A cinematic ratio is used - so we see black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, this re-enforces the cinematic theme. With regards to the 'over use' of cut scenes - The MGS franchise has hours of cut scenes in each release, no one complains too much, it could be argued that the amount of game-play in the MGS games is proportional but again it doesn't really have any impact on whether you should play The Order 1886 or not.

There is a supernatural theme running through the game and that part of the game-play is perhaps neglected too much and where it really lets itself down and loses its shine, as this part of the game is far too reliant on Quick Time Events so there is scant occasion for the players to feel any satisfaction at all in slaying their supernatural foes.

The game is very well produced - it looks beautiful (despite being quite dark and murky in tone in a lot of the sections), the run and gun 3rd person shooting is great with a nice array of weaponry available as you traverse the chapters and the character and story development is great too.

To reiterate - The Order: 1886 is indeed flawed but not to the degree that should deter you from playing it. What are you waiting for? :-)

The Order 1886 is a great game.
The Order 1886 was to me very good. Don't really get all the hate/criticism it has recieved. The Last Of Us wasn't revolutionary either, but people loved that one and to me The Order is a bit like TLOU in its presentation.
Good story, solid gameplay although I would've liked more different guns in the game. Probably the best graphics in a game ever.

Exploration is minimal because all areas are small and corridor like, everything you find does not matter or even give you better insight into the story. Boss battles are terrible and, although shooting feels great and some weapons are very interesting, there are not a lot of chances to use these weapons.
I am really sad how this game turned out cause the art and technology behind it are so great. Lets hope for a much better sequel.

I would have been perfectly happy to buy this game if it was $15-20, because that's the value that its worth to me. If I spend $60 on a game or other media, I expect it to give me at least 30-40 hours worth in the long run.

One last note: I cannot believe they ended the game the way they did. I thought I still had maybe 1/4 of the game left to go, but it just ENDED abruptly. What worries me is that they intend to fill the remainder with DLC. If that's the case, I'll just watch it on Youtube. It makes me sad that companies are purposely leaving out critical creative and story content only to sell it later on.

Sadly, once your eyes adjust to its console defining graphics, that feeling of greatness slowly fades and this PS4 exclusive becomes an incredibly conflicted game. Over the years we’ve seen games become more focused on cinematic experiences and telling captivating stories, most games use a mix of gameplay and cutscenes to take the player on a journey. The Order 1886 is the perfect example of taking this idea too far.
There is no denying the physical beauty of The Order 1886. The player finds his or herself in a magnificent looking London during the year of, you guessed it, 1886. Every physical detail is present, from the cloth movement to how a bottle rolls over the cobblestone streets. This just proves how beautiful a game can look. Sadly the attention to the world’s aesthetics may be the cause of the game’s greatest downfall.
Just like The Order itself, the story is far better on the surface. The player takes the role of Sir Gallahad, a member of The Order, a modern facet of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. Their goal is to maintain peace within an alternate historical version of 1886 London. The Order’s main enemies include a small band of Rebels and Werewolves, or Lycans. From here the story kicks off and slowly unravels till you reach an ending that will make shrug and say: “I guess it’s over?” When you're playing The Order, shrugging will probably be something you do incredibly often.
From the get go 1886’s main problem is revealed. Pacing is certainly the enemy to any story and it is obvious from the start. Most of the game’s chapters are filled with sections that the require you to walk, incredibly slowly, through a room, hallway or dark corridor. The game’s total playtime is no more than seven hours long, but that really isn’t the issue. The problem is how conflicted the game is at its core. While trying to tell it’s less than satisfying story the player watches cutscenes, slowly walks around, and occasionally shoots enemies.
The Order 1886 plays like the game equivalent to a pop-up book that only occasionally has little tabs you can actually use. As you meander through the game’s sixteen chapters, some of which are only cutscenes, there’s something that becomes progressively apparent. This isn’t an experience you become part of, no this is a story that you’ll be force fed. The story contains no sense of exploration, danger or even depth. This style of storytelling only subtracts from The Order’s positive notes, like Sir Gallahad, the outstanding lead character, the remarkable over all world of 1886 and the interesting war between Knights and Werewolves.
The Order’s combat is one of its greatest aspects; it plays like a traditional third person shooter, yet doesn’t add anything new to the genre. Each encounter is still enjoyable and a welcome break from the walking and waiting. The vast array of weapons is another strong aspect of The Order 1886. Each gun is unique and fun, but you really only get to use each weapon once or twice because of how little combat situations appear.
Despite all of The Order’s substantial issues there is some definite promise for the future of this franchise. 1886 may not be the greatest third person shooter or even tell the most captivating story, yet there was a certain appeal. The game’s world is something truly special containing a surprisingly strong lead character and drop dead gorgeous visuals. Despite some small of The Order’s strengths this still may be one you can pass on.

The game is essentially a movie which requires you to take part in. There are some difficult gun battles, but they're not difficult because the enemy A.I. is good; it's difficult because the game is poorly designed.

The fact that everything looks amazing in the game only makes it worse, as you are walked through each level with this "look-but-don't-touch" environment. In this beautiful-looking game, there are no rewards for exploration, and the collectible items serve no purpose to the story or the game. The Order is--by far & without any doubt, the worst PS4-exclusive title to date, which is why I'm so surprised to see almost 1,500 positive user reviews which are obviously dishonest, and should be ignored--just like this game. I honestly wouldn't recommend The Order to anyone. Sold entirely on hype and by way of aggressive advertising, The Order is as hollow as a pumpkin and shallow as a puddle!

It's main problem and what I think the cause for a lot of people to hate on the game for is the amount of time the game does offer and basically take to complete and some areas that are lacking that should be and could have been a whole lot more if they really wanted and hopefully with the next title/sequel which I feel it deserves they improve upon and deliver just that.

Now I for one understood that it would be a linear experience and was ok with that as many people are but of course as long as the storytelling and gameplay was good that's not an issue and doesn't make it a bad game for being so. I thought this game delivered on the type of game it was meant to be and did it right for most part but of course not entirely and was lacking in areas that they could have done a whole a lot more in and done better at. For example things like a better looting system would have been better for the game and gave players more reason to replay to try and find or get particular loot or items that they may have missed on other playthroughs. Another thing would be a more open and deeper UI that allowed use of more then just the couple weapons and grenade that it did along with adding an inventory for your character to store, carry, and allow the character to select from. Lastly just overall made game's main story along with its world bigger and longer then what it is and offers atm which is short for a lot of people and for a single player game in general which I hope and feel some new DLC that adds to and expands the games main story soon could and would help add more much needed hours and replay value to this unique game.

I would have scored this game higher if it weren't for the lack of content because that's what I feel is the biggest letdown of this game not the other stuff I mentioned that I could honestly have lived without and more of suggestions for what I would do better and improve upon for next title/sequel. I mean under ten hours to complete this type of game is just unacceptable and shame for a game that isn't bad and really has a lot more potential.

I went into this game expecting the worse considering all the bad coverage it got, i was plesently surprised by how good it was, i really enjoyed the story and i loved the setting and characters, and of course the graphics are amazing. The best i have seen so far on a console. 8/10

It was a fun little game while it lasted. It is definitely more along the line of cinematic experience, but the gun play is strong and the story is decent.

Its length is definitely a flaw and some people may not like the way the game is presented,

A limp story, repetitive combat and lack of agency take the shine off a great technical achievement. [May 2015, p.64]

Visually it's everything you could have hoped for, but the compromises required to reach that fidelity, and moments of narcissism as a result of it, are hugely damaging. [Apr 2015, p.81]

Although the storyline invokes weighty subjects like colonialization and socioeconomic inequality, it fails to address these topics in any substantive way. Ditto the game’s dialogue, which contains flourishes of eloquence that founder because, as pleasing as the words are to the ear, the actions they affect have no bite.
