    It is absolute utter trash compared to the first game in terms of the story. The visual are probably the best I’ve seen on ps4 so far but the gameplay is just an “enhanced” version of the 2013 game. So if you’ve loved the first games story and characters this game is gonna ruin even that experience for you. So even tho the gameplay is an improvement and the graphics are gorgeous the storyIt is absolute utter trash compared to the first game in terms of the story. The story was filled with clichés and an extraordinary attempt to pass a political agenda. Politics shouldn't be part of any game. It was all over the place and ruined the characters we loved. The threemance was obnoxiously bad, Abby was terrible and the zombies were almost nonexistent.

    The ambience and music were subpar, especially compared to the previous game and the gameplay was extremely boring. The graphics looks like Switch graphics, which is weird for a naughty dog game. In addition, the length of the game is unfulfilling. I regret buying this and I advice every one to not waste their money on this.    … Expand

    The journey begins again and is absolutely incredible. Naughty Dog is an amazing studio and they've manage the capture and enhance the same visceral story power they unleashed with last of us 1. This is why I love video games! This journey is so feel and dark at times but if you see it through to the e n.v d you'll be reward by probably the best gameplay and storytelling experiences I'veThe journey begins again and is absolutely incredible.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Only giving this a 1 because of the obvious improvements in gameplay, so I will reward the people who worked on that. But the story writers for this game deserved to be fired. The Last of Us is one of my favorite games of all time, and somehow, someway they managed to take everything that was so great and magical about the first game and absolutely trash and tarnish it. Anybody that enjoyed the characters of the first game are going to be extremely disappointed by this. Joel and Ellie deserved a much better story then what they got in this, and as far as the character switching goes, Metal Gear Solid 2 did a much better job of that, so leave that to people who can actually write a decent story.

    I really hope the developers see that people are angry with this story and take notes on how to do better next time, because this is by far the most disappointed I have ever been with a video game in my 27 years of living, and I’m extremely easy to please, so that is saying something. Naughty Dog, you are better than this and are capable of so much more.    … Expand

I loved the growth of Joel and Ellie and that has all been taken away from me. The writer of thios title should be fired immediately and the main director of the game shouldn't be allowed to make a game again.     False advertising with Joel. His 3d model was changed from promo materials basically it was implied he should've been for a while but killed off after 3 hours and all conversations of JoelElly is poorly written flashbacks.
    DinaElly relationship shown ok and sometimes great but at the end it's soap opera.
    Graphics and acting is great.
    Don't care about gameplay and was here for continuation of THE story.
    But got just A story.

    People on subreddits and different media outlets called out the people who saw the leaks. They were called homophobic, transphobic, and all sorts of things.

    I consider myself an intelligent person, and as such, I've never cared for sex, gender, or affiliation in the games. I consider myself open minded, and never had a problem with anything, as long as it made sense, and it the story was written well.

    Obviously, I had no problem with Ellie loving women. It was hinted at in the DLC of the first game, and it played out in this one without any kind of issues. (The love triangle with Jesse, Dina being pregnant, and pregnancy giving Dina a plot armor was kinda meh though)

    But oh boy, the writing in this game. It's unbelievable. It's just ... wow.

    The man who taught Ellie how not to trust strangers, just randomly saves someone (doesn't even care if she's infected or not, because you know, it's not like there's an apocalypse happening). He goes one step further, he says "oh you live there with God knows how many of your buddies? Sure let's go", and then he practically introduces himself "Hey, I'm Joel". Of course Abby instantly knows it's the Joel she's looking for, since she saw the town 4 minutes ago with probably hundreds of people, and she already confirmed on Facebook, that there's only one Joel in there.

    So she goes on and brutally murders Joel. She murders Ellie's father figure right in front of her eyes. I expected Joel to die in the game, but definitely not like this. Disrespectful would be putting it lightly. Even the game devs said that they want to create a meaningful story, and not base this on shock value. Well, guess what this is. (Yes, shock value).

    So, after this, you're kinda left hanging and thinking, "okay, but they had Joel in so many places in the trailers, this can't be real". It is. Most of the scenes you saw are flashbacks that are just too short, but still show you the potential in this game. The thing it could have been with good writing. In other parts, Joel simply wasn't there. ND put him there for you to buy the game obviously. Calling this false advertising might be going a bit too far I guess (I'm not a legal expert though), but it's certainly a dick move which will cause some loss of trust among the community's members.

    Through the flashback scenes by the way, Ellie will learn the truth about the ending of the first game. She then starts hyperventilating and crying, because she didn't get to die. Yes. She's crying because she survived. The game practically tells you that there was only one doctor who could make the cure in the world (lol) and he's dead now because of Joel. You're not allowed to think that maybe, MAYBE the fireflies wouldn't have been equipped enough to start producing serums for EVERYONE, or even create the serum AT ALL. Joel is painted as the evil being that destroyed humanity's last hope. (You had this question popping up at the end of the first game as well, but back then, you were allowed to think about it). I saw a Youtube video discussing this (sorry, I don't remember the channel) and the guy mentioned that he wouldn't give up his life for anything at 14 years of age. Well, I wouldn't either.

    So what's after this?

    Well, you go to Seattle, murder every living being associated with our great friend, Abby. Along your journey here and there, you will encounter the religious (? I couldn't really figure out) cult, the Seraphites, that just kill for fun. Obviously the message here is... Religion bad? I don't really know.

    Also, did I mention you play as Abby for 8-10 hours? Oh yeah, you have to play as Joel's murderer, and what's worse, they'll try to get you to actually like her. I mean... If they change the ending, and take these hours out of the game, it might not even be as bad as it is.

    Before the ending, there will be a few nice moments (mostly flashbacks), and some horroristic ones. And of course, endless, useless violence. Ellie freaks out because she murders a pregnant woman (in self defense, since as she's about to lower her guard, they approach and try to kill her), and Abby comes back from her tour with her new friend. They fight, but end up going their separate ways after that.

    And the ending... You actually find Abby, and force a fight, but since you have a vision of JOEL (who was brutally murdered in front of you) you decide - after murdering half the United States - that it's actually not worth it... ok. You also lose a couple of fingers.

    I'm not an expert on changing hands with guitar, but she definitely has 5 fingers on the other hand, and with 3 fingers, you can play pick, slap, or fingerstyle. So she leaves the guitar, obviously.

    We get a final scene with Joel, so after all this, you may feel a bit better.

    I think this game was not developed to be naturalistic, it was just developed by a psychopath.

    It will get GOTY ofc

    In terms of gameplay, its no wonder that Naughty Dog excels at it. It has beautiful graphics and scenery, but that only makes up a small percentage of what makes a great game, especially one with a huge following such as TLOU. The characters were piss poor. Joel's confidence, problems with his past, and badass character is taken away immediately. Ellie's loveable sidekick persona becomes weak, as she comes off annoying in TLOU2. Abby is a whole other story. I can see the direction of making the audience sympathetic to her, but it turns to **** . Almost every direction taken by Druckmann is executed horribly; Joel's death could have been worthwhile and have meaning, and Ellie's goal of revenge ends up fruitless.
    The edgy theme of revenge and hate isn't done well at all; the characters are very 1D, and for a 25 hour game, everything is so quick and predictable. Representation is expected obviously, but damn...even that was done horribly too. It isn't a well written story at all, and the characters don't receive an arc despite the journey they go through. Joel deserved better.
    It's better to think of the franchise as just TLOU1 and Left Behind.    … Expand

    There's been a lot of controversy about this game, about its characters, about "pushing the narrative". I've never cared about a characters sexual orientation or anything like that. When I play a game I want a good story, some hope, good characters and in this case, I wanted redemption. But I got none of it from this game. I was just left depressed and angry. If this was the developers intention, then fine, they succeeded, but there was nothing to take away from it all. The journey wasn't interesting, the gameplay is somewhat copy/paste from the previous, the violence and torture is overwhelming, and the characters was one dimensional, uninteresting and unlikable.

    I can't for the life of me understand how journalists are giving this game such raving reviews, it baffles me. It's like they never played the first game. This is a sequel, its story from the first game matters. This should have been a seperate titled game, far away from the legacy of The Last of Us, and I wouldn't have wasted my money on it.

    I would give this game a 0/10, but because aparently it's beeing treated as review bombing I'm forced to give it a better score.    … Expand

This game was disappointing at best, the gameplay, and the looks were stunning but the story didnt make up for it, as it dumbed down from the first making it all feel pointless. The start was strong but the last nearly 75% dropped down in quality as it goes on. Trying to make you sympathize an antagonist can be great, but naughty dog has done it in a terrible way where it just makes you despise the antagonist more and feel more sympathetic to Marlene. The story is just disappointing and a massive step down from the nearly perfect narrative of the original. This might be the biggest disappointment to me and maybe of this entire year so far, its a shame to see naughty dog go from the great things of uncharted 2, the perfect conclusion with uncharted 4, and one of the greatest narratives of all time with last of us, dumbed down to this big mess. Get the game on sale is my verdict, but even then, be prepared for disappointment in narrative.… Expand

Not a single character acts like they are supposed to, there is no satisfication, or conclusion to the story, character deaths are there for just shock value.

    Trailers included COMPLETELY MANIPULATED scenes: That scene where Joel grabs Ellie to tell her he won't let her do this alone? It's actually Jesse in the final game, Joel is long gone at that point.

    That point where OLD Joel and Ellie talk? It's actually a flashback, not present day.    … Expand

    The game is amazing because its divisive, mature, uncomfortable and emotional. It's very hard to find a video game that includes all this traits. Graphics are nothing less then astonishing like it's always has been with a Naughty Dog games.

This is a terrible sequel to a great game, the writing for this is inconsistent and lacks a clear vision and instead relies on shock factors and forcing the player to make dark depressing choices to make them feel bad instead of giving any choice. ND started with Crash back in 96 and I was a diehard fan of them and every game they made, even Uncharted 3, have been pretty great up to this point, but they just need to purge their writing staff and get the old writers back.… Expand

    This game is immensely bleak, with the bright hopeful spots of the first entry being altogether absent. With that being said, just about 10 hours of the game are wasted on fruitless plots, and the entire story (potentially of both games) is rendered meaningless by the dumbfonded ending. I could say more, but this game is a huge disappointment, and I regret waiting 7 years for it.

    A lot of things happen out of stupidety of the characters which is often a result of bad writing. Characters are very flat and only few have signs of development.
    Personally I´d say if you´ve played the last of us, you´ve played the second installment with the main difference that you control a character which you probably can´t really get into.
    Only good thing are visuals, which is not enough to make a interactive movie into a game, but needed to sell this product to a wider audience.
    If you have the urge to "play" it, I´d say ask a friend to borrow, wait until a sale or a used copy because paying 60$ for a tortue porn movie is a bit much.

    The story is absolutely horrible. The leaks were right. What's up with the ending? You try to kill Abby but you suddenly feel guilty? What's up with that?

    Then there's the characters..Oh boy, they are so forgetable. Some of them feel forced into the story just to push an agenda.

    Then there's the actual killing, why does it have to be so gory? Are they trying to be edgy? It's not Carmageddon or Mortal Kombat.

The addition of some 'romantic' scenes did feel a bit forced, but overall the relationships between certain characters were compelling and I genuinely cared about them a lot.

    My verdict - play it. It's a fantastic game. The gameplay is extremely fun and the story should ahem you on the edge of your seat. You may not like the game, and that's ok, but I think that both the 10/10 and 0/10 reviews are slightly bias. Play the game for yourself and see what you thin, I promise that you won't be completely disappointed.    … Expand

    The graphics on this game where truly beautiful and the fighting style did have minor improvements but in this story oriented game, it lacked every single aspect. If I had to sum up the story without spoiling anything, all I would say is that this story is just one huge dumpster fire and that I would not recommend this 60$ game to anyone, this for me was a waste of my money and a waste of my time.

The gameplay is fine if not excellent, but the story ruined the entire experience for me. I have never bothered to review a game on metacritic before, but i feel like i need to let the developers and writers of this game know they **** it up big time. If you unlike me can look past the butchering of beloved characters, then by all means buy this game for the great gameplay. If however, you cared about Joel and Ellie from the first game, then play the remastered edition again and give this game the middle finger. Subverting expectations is not a great storytelling tool and the writers of this game should be ashamed.… Expand

    I'm been a Playstation fan for a long time and i can't remember the last time I played a Playstation game and felt the anger that I do today. I'm not sure why the story choices were made and not sure why the multiplayer was removed from this game. Gameplay is better but still is lackluster. AVOID!

I am heart broken, brought the last of us 1 when it came out and had a blast with the father daughter bonding storyline and cool gameplay, this game not only brought nothing new to the gameplay system, it also undermined everything that made the first game interesting, realistic and heart warming.
    For starters Tommy has no children IN THE APOCALYPSE! joel did not really move on and even died like a dog in a matter that did not even advanced the plot or made sense. Eli is an entitled idiot that **** on all the effort that brought her where she is AND TO BOOT SHE DOESN'T BREED, I MEAN YOU'RE HOLDING THE IMMUNITY GENE YOU **** AT LEAST BREED OR SOMETHING FOR MANKIND!!!! But the biggest grievance is making me see, play and interact with a bunch of terrible side characters that are all idiots, entitled and shallow, I would love the game to focus on the old guard and see how they can't keep up with families and health conditions that come with age, would be great, but we are stuck with this joke!     Story is just horrendous. They try to make this game feel extremely serious and realistic but because of the laughable decisions taken by characters, the game feels more like a bad comedy. It's bad and the the extremely high budget production doesn't change that.

    The last of us part 2 is a hilarious attempt at a video game. Outdated and clunky gameplay with fantastic graphics. The story tries to make the player feel bad for killing people in a post apocalyptic world where it’s kill or be killed by blatant manipulation. Spend your money elsewhere and don’t buy this awful "video game" that can barely be qualified as one

The dialogue is bad, Joel and Tommy are not credible in their roles (not that Joel sticks around much) and Abby's whole gang of rag-tags are insufferable. The humiliating way Joel dies is an insult to his character, the first game, and the fan base's intellect. I just won't fall for such cheap attempts at emotional manipulation. Joel is reduced to a mere instrument for justifying this badly designed revenge plot. And in the end, they still try to make him the bad guy. The game wants you to think there are more deep themes at play but there aren't. They did it for shock value. The characters are just puppets, servient to the plot and scarcely have any motivations of their own.

    At least it's fun, right? Not unless you enjoy dragging yourself through 25 hours of bleak slow-paced cut-scenes, with unlikable characters you can't even relate to. It's gonna pay off in the end when the story is supposed to go somewhere and make some sort of point, except it doesn't, and you forgot about it anyway because you got tired of stabbing people's throats over and over and over again.
