This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So to start, I haven't left a review on Metacritic for quite sometime but I feel that I NEED to. The people who are giving this game a low score and playing the beginning and not finishing need to stop because if they did, they wouldn't have the audacity to give this game a low score. I will explain why even small parts earn the right to "adding points" even if you rated the game a 0.

How in the world could this game ever score anything lower than a 9? Watching the beginning unfold had to be one of the hardest things to witness in my 25 years gaming. The death of Joel makes you want to jump through your screen and choke the life from Abby. With each blow that Abby hits Joel with; then Ellie screaming "please stop hitting him" makes your emotions fly through the roof. Any game that can bring tears to your eyes, even if you hate whats happening, deserves 3 points out of 10. A game made you feel a certain way just by playing it and that says a lot about the writers because emotions are a natural function of everything and are hard to bring out.

Fast forward to Ellie trying to find Abby and seek revenge.....why did Abby do all of this? This of course is a question that we ask ourselves. Ellie would do anything to kill Abby and anyone who gets in her way. But at what cost?

You watch yourself (Player) kill your way through person after person(and dogs) not realizing that everything you are doing is going to hurt once you meet them as Abby and who they are. Playing with the dogs and meeting the characters as Abby in some parts knowing that a couple hours ago you just killed them brutally with Ellie makes you feel a certain way again. Once again emotions take over. To not realize it until the game throws it back in your face is another level of playing field when it comes to developing and writing a story. Earns another 3 points. (I bet more than half the reviews didn't even make it to the Abby parts *sigh*)

Fast forward again. THEN the developers show how Abby goes from this selfish punk to a Joel like role towards Liv and changes her point of view in many aspects of her own life. Would she kill anyone to save Liv?... Would feeling this way now possibly stop her from killing Joel? Seeing his side of the story could of changed her decisions in the past. Loving Ellie was more than "saving the world to Joel" Having only Liv left in Abby's life at this point, would she kill the random doctor trying to take that away from her? These a more questions you ask yourself and how Naughty Dog depicts so frickin well.

There is so many things that happen that there is too much to write down here. I will say that in the end you see what Ellie truly lost and what Abby learned with the knowledge she gained through her arrogant and ignorant reasons. Loss sucks any way you put it but life does go on and its terrible to see that both Ellie and Abby have made some terrible decisions to only realize them in the games closing.

I PROMISE you that if you actually finish this game and see it through, you will not be disappointed. The gameplay, the shear aggressiveness of each battle, the story that will blow you mind right down to the last second and the pure emotionally ride you take playing this game; earns even more points so if you hated this game for you own reasons, these reasons suggest a score of at least 7+ Just give it the chance to open itself up to you as you progress and see what the true story is.

This game deserves every point, star, rating, etc. that exists not because it was just a great game; that if you finished it, you know that as a human being; a gamer; nothing quite like the full story of The Last of Us will never leave us emotionally. When someone brings up this game to you in your life, you will always FEEL a certain way about what went down and how you felt towards it. You will always feel inclined to "put in your two cents" and why do you ask? Because even if you rated it low or had a gripe about this, that or the other, Joel's death, what Ellie felt she needed to do and Abby getting revenge for her father were part of an elaborate plan to show you, as the player, that emotions fuel everything we do in life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first game is one i hold very close to my heart and is one if the best experiences I've had on a games console. TLOU2 has to be the most graphically groundbreaking game on PS4. The combat is exhilarating and the environments lush and realistic. Thats about it though. The comparison with the Last Jedi is well documented. I hate the way Naughty dog tries to emotionally manipulate the player into hate Ellie and care for Abby. There are no redeeming emotional qualities at the end of this game. Everyone loses. There so many logic fails that compound the gaming experience. Abbey is rammed down your throat and you are forced 'cheaply' yo try and care for her but you have no desire for her to survive, she seems to take revenge with no moral concerns. She was about to relish in slitting a pregnant womans throat whereas Ellie is visibly tormented by her actions yet you are made to play as Abby for half the game. Expanding on the logic fails. Abby has chance to kill Ellie - lets her go. Abby has another chance to kill Ellie - lets her go. Ellie after settling into somewhat comfortable existence then goes back out and after travelling half way across the country to find Abby AGAIN - lets her go. In all at the end Ellie is a shell of the person she was at the end of the first game. Joel has been **** all over, remember Joel.. One of the most beloved video games of all time that has less than 10 minutes of screen time in this game. You have absolutely no emotional fulfillment to take away at the end of the game. I don't care about sexual orientation or any of that. Its just the sheer disrespect of relationship between Ellie and Joel that I can't forgive and leaves me slightly heartbroken. What have they done? Expand

YOU SAID that TLOU2 was about both Joel and Ellie! You also said: "Trust us, we won't fail you, we love these characters more than anyone"... Yeah right, guess what: IT WAS A LIE. The way he dies is just ridiculous and having a character that looks like you spitting on him? **** YOU.

I loved the story, the gameplay is much better than Tlou 1, the graphics and facial expressions are something I've never seen in a game, the AI had a great improvement, atmosphere and the soundtrack are just incredible. This game made me feel so many emotions, I felt love, anger, hate, empathy, I cried countless times during the game. All flashbacks are a masterpiece (especially the museum scene).
I found the change of perspective so interesting, showing that there are always two sides to a story.
I loved all the new characters, especially Dina and Lev, Ellie and Abby are incredible and well-written characters, Joel excellent character (I will miss him a lot).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First let me say this game was not all bad. Like many people I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals, the storyline at the beginning in Jackson, and Dina and Ellie’s side story. However, that’s about all I can say for the good parts.

I’m sure at some point (maybe even soon) this comment will be taken down since it is going to be very critical of the game. Fine by me. This game completely destroyed everything the first one built. From Ellie and Joel’s relationship becoming fuller and more compassionate, to Ellie’s character development in strength and understanding of the world. This game had so much potential to be great, and I think a lot of us expected a storyline that was much different. Especially considering the original trailers for the game were not even accurate to gameplay. I mean, ya’ll even said Ellie was going to be the only playable character in the game when you were first developing it, so I guess that was either a lie or you changed your mind, but either way, poorly executed.

Personally I feel like any of the fans could have written a more comprehensible and well organized game in their sleep. I think the message of the game that hate and revenge get you nowhere would have been much more well received if you had given the fans time to dive into the story a little before throwing Ellie out into the thick of it. Why didn’t we get to see more about life in Jackson? Why wasn’t Ellie’s relationships with HER BEST FRIENDS not shown more? Why would you kill Joel in the FIRST FREAKING HOUR OF THE GAME??? Don’t get me wrong, I think killing Joel was an essential part of Ellie’s character arc, but the way this was all gone about was dreadful. It’s like you took the original characters and watered them down to a milk toast version of themselves that would be more commercially palatable. Oh my god, and Abby’s storyline! How could I forget? Why would you have people play as Abby for a majority of the game? I’m sorry was this supposed to be all about her? You could have easily given Abby her own game. Hell I would have played that! But no, all you wanted to do was keep fans guessing the whole way through the game. Around every corner a new twist you never expected. You wanna know why we didn’t expect some of those twists and turns, because they made the game intolerable. They didn’t make any sense! From Ellie’s TWO opportunities to kill Abby, to her leaving Dina after they made a life together, even Tommy’s lack of understanding for Ellie not wanting to go after Abby anymore (but then still going after her for some reason after she spent the whole game trying to keep Dina, like wtf??). I mean, wasn’t Ellie the one who had to convince Tommy to go after Abby in the first place? Why the flip between characters? To create parallels?? Crap. Absolute crap.

I’m sure there are people out there who appreciate the game, but I am not one of those people, and I encourage you to wait until this game goes on clearance to play it. DO NOT waste your money, borrow a copy from a friend if you really wanna play it that bad. Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman do not deserve your hard earned cash for this absolute garbage heap of a game. Kudos to the people who worked hard and put real passion and effort into this game, I’m sorry you had to see something with so much potential get ruined by someone without vision. I’m looking at you Neil. Way to blow.

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I'm a big fan of the original and that I don't agree with almost all of the backlash this game has gotten.

GAMEPLAY: If you enjoyed the gameplay of the original you will definitely enjoy it in this game. Combat feels visceral and tense. Weapon variety is excellent and there are many ways to handle combat situations without feeling like too many. The stealth mechanics work well and don't feel as tedious as in some other games. Being found out by an enemy isn't the end of the world and if you are quick and clever you can go back to hiding. (NOTE* I played on normal difficulty and found that in some cases I had more crafting supplies then I needed. If you are experienced with this style of game and are looking for a challenge you may want to bump up the difficulty level)

ATMOSPHERE: The atmosphere was incredibly well done. Individual chapters each feel unique and have their own style to them. Everything from visual cues and sound really help to immerse you in this treacherous world you are exploring. Trying to sneak up on a clicker in a dark room is just as tense and controller gripping as it was in the first game.(also I know graphics aren't everything but man is this game stunning to look at.

ENEMIES: Enemies are well done both infected and human. There is enough variety in the infected that they are interesting and difficult to encounter. The human enemies also feel a lot more genuine and seem to have more human-like reactions then I have seen in any third-person-shooter.

COLLECTIBLES: I don't normally enjoy collectibles in games but I actual found myself actively hunting them out here and getting a rush each time I found one. At least for the first half, I didn't have the same excitement for the second half of the game.

STORY: As I said I am a big fan of the first game and I think that the story felt like a natural and well done continuation of character arcs and themes from the first game. When new characters were introduced I found myself hesitating a bit to warm up to them due to certain story moments but as I spent more time with them and they revealed more about themselves I began to see them as more well rounded and those character arcs were something I really admired by the end of the game.

I found the themes of the perpetual cycle of violence and how the "othering" of our fellow man not only dehumanizes them but also dehumanizes us to be really clear and powerful throughout the game.

CRITIQUES: While I largely enjoyed most of this game I do have some criticisms. It feels like sometimes the "gut punch" moments of the story are stacked a little too much to the point where they begin to lose some of their impact and you begin to numb to the pain of the characters. This is especially true with the amount of physical punishment that gets dished out.

A moment at the end of the game felt a bit awkward and while I don't wish they had changed the ending I wish they would have changed how the ending came about to make it fit more with the established character arcs and themes.

This is more subjective but as I noted I never really felt like I was low on equipment past the early game which I think would have helped with tension of the game if resources had been harder to find.

Also a gameplay transition in the middle of the game felt a bit jarring and perhaps could have been handled a bit differently.

Overall I really enjoyed my experience with TLoU2 and it was a game I would think about afterwards and a gameplay loop I was excited to jump back into when I wasn't playing. If you were a fan of the original and are open to the idea of it's gamplay and themes being carried by new characters I would definitely recommend it.

This game is kind of like those burgers that you see in McDonald's commercials, they look great but they're made from plastic and glue.
The game is visually stunning and plays well but unfortunately the gameplay and immaculate detailing are attached to a generic revenge plot that is told in a way that is beyond sub par. It takes beloved characters and forces them to behave uncharacteristically in service to a contrived plot that reeks of pretentiousness. The story itself tells events out of order and from multiple perspectives in an attempt to make you feel the consequences of your actions. This is poorly executed and actions that you took 6 hours ago (which held no weight to them prior to context) are suddenly thrown back in your face but by this time we've already moved on, it's too late to care.

The attempt at humanizing the game's villains falls flat and becomes infuriating after a certain amount of time, we are forced to play as the primary antagonist of the game for around 10 hours during which time we are mercilessly beaten over the head with attempts to show that this character is just a regular human being with relationships and problems not so different from Joel and Ellie, which is accentuated not so subtly by flashbacks in which the two lead characters of the game are shown in near identical situations. The problem with this attempt at humanization is that the group in discussion has committed an act that will make the vast majority of players loathe the thought of their existence, let alone the attempt at redemption. The attempt itself is also poorly executed often relying on situations in which the characters are shown caring for animals or children. It's as if Niel Druckmann suddenly forgot how to write a compelling character without using crutches.

Character development in game is essentially non existent, the story being told doesn't allow for much growth by either of our lead characters as it's told in a relatively short period (3 days). The supporting cast is well acted but we are never given enough time with these characters to learn anything about them or develop any sort of meaningful attachment despite them being rather important to the narrative. The dialogue between characters feels forced and messy and as a consequence their relationships feel unbelievable.

The ending is one of the biggest issues I had with the game, It is drawn out and nonsensical all in order to hammer home the absolutely groundbreaking message that this game delivers which is essentially that revenge is bad. Genius, I know. This point was more than sufficiently hammered in throughout the story and the ending did not need to be compromised to give us another example of how terrible revenge is.

This story should have been told within the same universe but with original characters, at least then it would only be a sub par sequel and not an insult to the characters that we know and adore, as well as the audience that purchased this game based on the good will that Naughty Dog earned with the original. It's a shame that the technical brilliance of this game will be overshadowed and mared by such a poorly written and sloppily executed story. In an ultra linear game that focuses primarily on story telling, I cannot in good conscience give any bonus points for a gameplay loop established in a previous game or for the insane amount of polish that the game possesses. My personal distaste for the direction of this game has been left out of this review as much as possible, honestly I wanted to give it a Zero but that wouldn't be fair or objective. 4/10 is as fair as I can be.

If you have any love or nostalgia towards "The Last of Us" then don't play this game, it will alter your perception of the characters and leave you with a bitter taste in your mouth. Knowing where this story leads will likely make it more difficult to enjoy the original game for the masterpiece that it was.

It did make a monster out of Ellie by the end, however, I feel like that was necessary for the moment of catharsis. The ending provides a message of hope for characters who have lost everything. The character inconsistency is so strong that negates the necessary suspension of disbelief, and the second part of the game is such a drag that you struggle to just complete the game. The ending is horrible, but to some extent you are just glad it is done. This was a tough game in many ways, and really challenged your perception of certain characters. The ending did fall a *little* flat for me, and about 10 hours in the game seemed pretty repetitive and a bit of a slog, but once you reach the midway point (you'll know it when you reach it), it becomes a whole different beast, and improves immeasurably.

This is a game you really need to play, regardless of spoilers and unnecessary hate. It's such a brutal game, and one that will stay with you for a long time afterwards.
The first game remains my favourite of all time, but this is certainly a worthy sequel.

Throughout the story I found myself going back and forth with it like a love hate relationship. There were times where I just wanted to put the game down and stop playing because I didn't like the directions things were headed in. Despite that I kept playing because some part of me wanted to see it through to see if there would be redemption. In the end I didn't really get the satisfying redemption I was looking for but it made me question things like who's good and who is evil in the story. You may be the hero in one person's story but the villain in someone else's. No other game has ever drawn out so much emotion in me for the plight of fictional characters. Most movies don't even accomplish that much personal connection to the viewer. A true narrative masterpiece. Can't wait for Last of Us Part 3! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game makes you go through a lot for very little to no reward. Now let me get the good out of the way, the graphics, atmosphere, soundtrack, animations are all excellent. The gameplay and AI is good but gameplay gets repetitive and the AI can be super dumb at times which stops it being excellent. The story though is so weak and poor in comparison to the first it hurts. Character development and connection to characters was what made us fall in love with the first game. Now I am not fussed on Joel dying (GoT made me tough to losing main characters) however the execution of Joel's death is so badly done and it is done for cheap shocks and nothing more. Druckman said we were meant to feel something and we do, we feel cheated and peeved off because of what YOU did and how YOU chose to do it more than Abby killing our beloved character. What follows is a by the numbers revenge plot which if you have seen any movie of this type you will have seen time and time again there is nothing new here yet it is being heralded as genius. It is EVERY revenge film EVER but with a worse ending. I actually feel a better ending would have been Ellie finding Abby tied up at the end, having a conversation and then just leaving her to die there or maybe even leaving it open for someone to have rescued Abby and open it up for a third with her but what we get is a pointless exchange and then another change of heart, which happens a lot in this game, where we let her go. I didn't like it and to be honest the length of the game and the way it is draaaaaged out meant by the time I got to the end I actually felt more annoyed that was what I got. Nothing. A poor end to what had so much promise. The story is what drives a game such as this and unfortunately the last of us 2 is a hollow, weak, poorly paced, generic story I have seen over and over again and it fails to deliver. 7 years.....for this. I am totally confused how anyone can score this 10 out of 10 as a perfect game when it isn't really doing anything new that we haven't seen or played before and there is no way this story stacks up against the first, nowhere near, the first installment had everything a good story needs. Druckman clearly peaked at that point. I was really excited for this part but all it has done is made me even less interested in a third. A complete mess and most disappointing game of the generation. Expand

This feels like a leap forward in storytelling. And not just video game stories, I mean storytelling as a tradition. It's something that's never been done before. It was a huge risk for Naughty Dog to take, and for those who can appreciate it, it's a true masterpiece.

It explores so many themes; the cycle of violence, empathy, inherited pain, while also drawing parallels between the different characters and storylines. But what takes it over the top, is that it brings in the player, forcing you to grapple with the same emotions that the characters are feeling.
It's an experience that I'll likely never forget, and fans will be talking about for years and years to come.

The graphics, gameplay, animation, and acting alone gives this game a 6/10 in my opinion. Adding on a story that has minor flaws, but overall is pretty great, gives it a 9/10 for me. Its ambitious and more of an art than the typical “beat-em-up”/“shoot-em-down” game. It asks us to drop our typical and satisfying “f*ck up the bad guys” mentality and instead think about the effect those actions would have on an actual human being. I like this realisric change in pace, however I understand it’s not for everyone. Some people want to just enjoy a brainless game. I enjoyed this game for being deeper than that. The writers of this game didn’t treat our characters like simple murder machines, but people who have consequences for their actions physically, mentally, and socially.

Go in with an open mind and give this game a shot. It is definitely worth a buy and definitely worth your time. Even if its to be apart of this wild conversation amongst gamers.

Graphics and animations are some of the best I've seen. Did not agree with the story much. I would change the order of major events, and found that there were many characters that I did not care about and did not even remember the name of because of a lack of meaningful character development. Some characters I tried desperately to like (despite their controversial actions) ended up being very uninteresting and I found myself having to force myself to continue the game. I also found some major characters to be completely unlikable, yet the developers attempt to make us care and sympathize with them through very cheap tactics (namely forcing us to commit horrid acts to justify another characters actions). Older characters stray away from their established values and skills, with completely out-of-character actions with little to no logical explanation. Story is a very cliché "the cycle of revenge is bad" plot and seems to make the player do terrible things simply to be edgy and create "shock value". The fact that much of the player base literally does not want to continue playing because they have to play as a certain character tells you enough about how unlikable some of the characters are. And no, successfully eliciting certain emotions from the player does not mean the story is good, it is because the first game's characters were so well developed that people are emotional as to what happens to them in a sequel. The story also feels dragged on almost double to how long it should have been, and I found myself completely losing motivation to continue playing. A story that subverts expectations isn't necessarily good. There is a good way to do it and a bad way to do it, and because the writers seem to only do this for shock value, I think this game does not execute this aspect well. Although I can appreciate many aspects of the game, such as graphics, animations, accessibility options, AI, sound design, level design, and voice actors, I overall cannot recommend this game because the story is such a pivotal component of something like The Last of Us, and it seems to be an extreme letdown compared to the first game. I love the reflections that basically mirrors both POVs. This game resonates with me because I feel like the way this game is made,

The only thing I would have changed, and it is not even that much of a trouble to remove it from a 10/10 rating, it is that the scenes should have been rearranged with less cut scenes. But keeping some of them for sure. Like the one that reveals what this game was actually about.

Poor writing. The story is too choppy and changes pace too often. Got to the end and thought "why did i even waste my time and money playing this game". Game play was good but the story was far from that. I should've gotten TLOU Remastered for my PS4 instead of TLOU 2. I am beyond let down.

I hate this game's story, It destroys the character set of the first part,In addition, the creator's arrogance made me feel disappointed with the naughty dog.

Though the game was set on revenge...it really wasn't at all about revenge, but the suffering that both Ellie and Abby have gone through, and forgiveness. The ending shows that forgiveness is the only thing that really makes you human if you understand that it isn't just ellie who suffers from the death of Joel. Abby lost her father too, and yes killing Joel is horrible and the only thing Abby was set out to do is avenge her father, but Ellie did the same thing right after Abby killed her own father figure.Throughout the game you see their pasts and understand that survival is hard but forgiveness is even harder. I can see where some people have problems with it, but I honestly don’t consider them problems. The game has the intended effect of making you feel uncomfortable. I found the story quite compelling, and the gameplay and graphics were amazing.

I feel like the story, even though it might seem to be poorly written, is actually not that bad. Perhaps killing off Joel so fast was not a particularly good decision, but all of the people are simply blinded by this fact and review-bombing the game. You are entitled to disagree, of course, but I do recommend developing your own opinion, not based on the things someone has already told you. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
