This game is amazing, the story is very good and lets you reflect and love and hate and that there’s always both sides of a coin. The gameplay is top notch too, improved a lot from the first one. Graphics are second to none.
But after all this praising I gave it a 5 cos there are no strong emotional crescendos as the first one did that grabs you and squeeze your heart till your eyes bleed

I'm in it for the horrific tragedies and story. First game has a bittersweet ending. But now you got a game to really pull your heartstrings and make you really think about how can I like a character that did something so wrong to someone I love. Something so powerful. I wish more people could handle just going for the ride of a story. Even the not so happy ones. But that's society and it makes me sad. This is why we can't have good things.

I love this game so much. Best gameplay of all time. From gameplay alone, it's impossible to be a 1 or a 2 yet here we are. People ignore everything it did right because of plot points....... Lol like omg. How pathetic. That's elementary school level childish behavior. Are any adults reviewing this? Story is so good and really goes deep into making you question yourself and the characters. Thought provoking on such a big level. How can you relate to your worst enemy? How can you sympathize with them? This game is better than 1. 1 is one of the best games of all time. But 2? It does everything better. The ending kinda sucked. But it also made me wonder. And I want more

Uma tremenda lacração sentimentalista que a desenvolvedora quer passar ao jogador, com enredo cheio de furos, fora a perda de personagens que poderiam ser importantes, mas que foram mal aproveitados no jogo. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The choice to flip perspectives into the character that you intend to hate and build an in-depth, emotional background around is one of the most interesting and creative choices I've seen in a game in years. I feel that many gamers who disliked this experience have a difficult time parsing their emotions. Having played through both installments in the series twice now, I still do not understand why people tend to show so much affection towards Joel, but save none of those feelings for Ellie. I am reading nothing but disdain for her character, which is odd given that she has far more gravity in the story, and far more character development over time. Yes it is difficult to grieve a character you have grown a love for, but instead of feeling so possessive over a fictional character and despising the developers for "killing him" (y'all, he's not a real guy. it's gonna be ok), instead try dissecting these feelings and WHY you feel them. The Last of Us is a story of complexity - there is no black and white. Every survivor in this universe has a story to be heard, and I so enjoyed being given the experience of seeing a new, fully rounded perspective in this post-apocalyptic world. I truly think that this game will be regarded as one of the best games of all time. Once gamers grow up and acknowledge the consciousness of the writing, they will see that not ever game needs to have a Capital H Hero and Capital V Villain. The game reflects compassion, deep sorrow, vengeance, endurance, pain in a way none of us can truly know and I think that's what people are most frustrated with. The feelings are bigger than them. And that, to me, is what makes the game very powerful. And to those complaining about "SJW" politics, grow up and go outside. Meet people. We can have one gay character in a broad sea of games featuring straight, white characters. Expand

I knew from the beginning that Joel would die anytime soon, so it wasn't really a suprise to me. If Joel would've been kept alive throughout the entire game, the storyline would've been so much less interesting. In other words, it would've been exactly like the first Last Of Us game. Abby and all the other new characters were NOT badly written. Getting to know completely new characters does not have to be a bad thing, especially with (for example) Abby's backstory. The only thing I have to agree on is that the ending could've been a bit different due to the logic behind it (or lack thereof), but that's still not a reason to hate this masterpiece of a game. The graphics are a 10/10. The Last Of Us Part II is one of the best games I've played. Expand

I don't blame the agenda for this, I blame the fact when you play as the character who killed your favorite character from the first part. When a screenwriter makes Abby understand, it's disgusting. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I entirely understand a great deal of the criticism towards this game, I just don't agree with a lot of it.
I mean it's obvious the whole "Woke game" criticism holds no ground, but some of the others are more reasonable. I see a lot of people complaining about being forced to play as Abby, which I understand and wasn't exactly too happy myself to be playing her but by the end of the story I understood why I was playing her and it made the end sequence very interesting as it's not something I've seen in a video game before. When you fight Ellie, it's interesting because obviously you don't want to "win" in a way that would leave Ellie dead.

I will say there's a lot of this story where I wish this game allowed you to make some choices in the story. There are some points where you just want Ellie to stop. Granted I think the fact that the game so relentlessly forces you to go through with it makes your feeling against some of the stuff you have to do stronger.

At some point in this game I feel like everybody(Even those who didn't like the game) just wanted the cycle of revenge to stop.
There's a point in this game where you hate Abby. For some people that point never stops and persists to this day but for people who are more open to seeing her side you realise her journey of killing Joel was the same as Ellie's Journey to kill Abby.

Joel killed Abby's father, Abby goes through a great deal and damages her relationships just to be able to kill Joel.

Abby kills Ellie's dad(Maybe not biologically, but in every other sense), Ellie goes through a great deal and damages her relationships just to be able to kill Abby.

    __________________________________________________

I understand having been too invested in Joel and Ellie to care about what Abby went through.
But if you look at it clear from bias it is literally the exact same thing Ellie is doing(Which by the end you likely want her to stop doing), so you should understand why Abby did what she did.

Granted if you can't "forgive" her(I hate to phrase it like that because forgiving her isn't exactly the right phrase), I don't blame you, but if you've payed attention at all you should at least understand.

Either way I think this honestly was an interesting experiment in some ways, seeing how people would react to and if they're able to empathise with someone who murdered a character they loved.

The world building is nonsensical and boring. The advertisement and those trailers ND showed before had nothing to do with the final product. Outright fraud in my opinion. In no way is this a organic continuation of the first one, or a opportunity to reconnect to the characters youve grown to like.

All those praises from the "official gaming journalism" just shows how much those is worth these days. If i could have gotten my money back, i definitly and gladly would have given the game back. Naughty dog hasnt seen a single dollar from me since then, and they likely never will again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me preface this review with my low score has nothing to do with politics. Everyone should have representation in gaming. I don’t want my review to be disregarded as a “review bomb” or that I’m a bigot for not liking the game. I wanna get the technical aspects of the game out of the way. Hands down this is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. ND has crafted a beautiful world filled with detail. Every new scene makes you go “wow” The detail crafted into the world and the game is stunning. Characters look super detailed and you can really appreciate the effort that went into them when you look at the model viewer. Animations are so fluid and feel so natural. The way foliage moves and bends as your character walks through is crazy. So many times I’ve seen games where I try to do something in the world they’ve crafted and I can’t. So many times in this game have I said “I bet I can’t do X” to immediately perform X animation and it left me stunned. This game world looks and feels real. Hands down this game is a beautifully crafted technical masterpiece. That being said I did NOT buy the game for the visuals or the gameplay. For a game like this I consider it a plus if Its good or fun to play. TLOU1 had an amazing story with a lot of tedious moments and puzzles but its worth playing again and again just for the story. I find myself replaying TLOU1 and loving it even though how tedious some of it is. TLOU2 is about 24-26 hours long depending on how fast you move through it. Last of Us Part 1 is about 13-16 hours long. I mentioned that because in the TLOU1 I feel there is never a dull moment. The pacing is quick and keeps you engaged constantly. In TLOU2 it feels like it has A LOT of boring padding. There was so many times I said “please let this part be different.” “What’s the point of this?” “please stop padding the game and let’s just continue the story.” Let’s talk about the characters. TLOU1 has a small strong cast of characters. They’re all memorable and iconic. In the TLOU2 there were so many times I was like “who is this again” “why do I care about their death?” “We only saw them moments earlier and they had no development.” “why introduce new characters this late in the game? I don’t care about them.” I feel there are moments in the game that should be rearranged. We kill characters then get to know them as Abby. Shouldn’t it be the other way around so we feel bad about it? Most of Abbys friends feel the same. I couldn’t really remember if I had killed them as Ellie or not. They just felt pointless. The game feels packed to the gills with people and not in a good way. I killed so many people and felt nothing. It all felt pointless. Give me a small cast of characters and make me feel for them. Don’t make me kill 20 people and then show they had friends and family. That’s not the right way to tell a story at all. The reason Joel’s death is so hard hitting is because we journeyed with him across the country. We’ve been through hell with him. His death feels cheap and and is where the running start of the game trips and falls. When Abby kills Joel you burn like Ellie does. You want blood. How could ND just kill off such a well written character only to replace him with 4 that we have no time to get to know before they die? So you set off to kill Abby. Then the game switches your control over to Abby. At this point I honestly thought about stopping the game but continued. Honestly they should have taken an entire game to develop Abby and her friends. I wouldn’t have even been mad if this title was a spin off that didn’t have Joel or Ellie in it at all. This game has too many ideas to really do anything with. The bones of the story are okay though. The execution is not. Okay most of the gameplay is tedious and makes you beg for it to end and the story has A LOT of issues. So I ask what is the point of the game? Abby let’s Ellie live soooo many times just to be surprised to see her. It’s ludicrous. Ellie literally threw her happy family away with Dina just to kill Abby and then to not even kill her? Also what happened to Dina and JJ. you’re telling me they really cleaned out the house and moved? In a zombie filled world they packed the uhaul and just moved? Abby threw her life away for two people she knew for less than 2 days? Makes no sense. Lev and his sister were introduced too late to be meaningful. I honestly didn’t care for them at all. This game has too many “oh the humanity the tragedy of revenge!” Points in it and feels pretentious. And the end of the game I just felt hollow and disappointed and unfulfilled. I kept saying “what was the point of this game?” They didn’t need to make this game. I feel like I wasted my time and games shouldn’t make you feel like that. You should feel accomplished for beating it not empty. This is not worth a buy IMHO. Expand

The reason why people are complaining is because they were expecting the standard "hero journey" type of narrative, that revolves around a hero who suffers but prevails in the end. It's sad to realize that the public in general is not prepared for something more mature and realistic. LIFE IS RANDOM AND NOT EVERYBODY GETS WHAT THEY DESERVE. That's the whole point of the story, that most people are just missing or, unfortunately, don't have the necessary "stomach" to appreciate.

When I first played through the Last of Us Part II, I experienced the same anger and rage that most of the community had been through due to its controversial and 'interesting' story. At the time I probably would've given the game a 4 or a 5 due to its very inconsistent story-telling, how little I cared for the characters, and how the game dragged on loads towards the end. But afterWhen I first played through the Last of Us Part II, I experienced the same anger and rage that most of the community had been through due to its controversial and 'interesting' story. At the time I probably would've given the game a 4 or a 5 due to its very inconsistent story-telling, how little I cared for the characters, and how the game dragged on loads towards the end. But after playing the game a second time through and watching others play it, i've leaned towards understanding this game a little bit more. I appreciate the vast beauty of this game, and its much improved gameplay from the first. I enjoy the brutality of the story and the point its trying to tell. However, I still have those same thoughts on the framing of the game as a whole. The story, albeit very different from the first seems as if it was caught in some sort of rewrite, there are points in the story where it seems its trying to hammer home this idea of the cycle of revenge and brutality, where other points it seems to try to call back to the first game. This detracts from the story in my opinion as I would much rather prefer that the game be hammered home in either direction, either take it in the way of The Last of Us, or hammer home your new idea for a story, don't get cold feet trying to do both. The also relative inconsistencies in the story and how little it seems to do to make us care for certain characters certainly detracts from the game. But my BIGGEST complaint of the story is the arbitrary split in the middle of the game, I strongly feel that if the game had simply had both sides of the story running alongside each other, the game would've felt smoother and not dragged on as much towards the end. To me, it makes no logical sense why you would write a story that builds all the way up for 8~ hours up to a climax, just to cut away to another 8~ hours of gameplay to make us go through the whole process again. While ive come to appreciate the game more than I originally did, there still are some story concepts and writing that I cannot wrap my head around. However, I would still probably tell you to give this game a watch or playthrough as it definitely is one to watch. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is probably the biggest mixed bag you could ever find. On one hand, it makes insane technical innovations, with some of the best graphics I’ve ever seen, and on the other hand its game play systems barely evolve past its predecessor title from 2013. Immense care is put into the environments and acting, yet points of the story seem to have been thrown together with no thought of logic or pacing. For about every pro one can find for this game, there’s a con that drags that pro down, and makes this game, to me at least, abhorrently meh, and insanely disappointing.

For a narrative focused action game sequel such as The Last of Us Part II, my 10 point system reads as such:

    Narrative

Structure/Writing, 0/2: The revenge format the story was aiming for here failed miserably. Ellie’s half of the game is over reliant on coincidence, Macguffins, and long travel times to the next narrative beat, which causes it to suffer from poor pacing. Abby’s half focuses on an underdeveloped war and redemption arc which are detached from Ellie’s story. These factors cause the conflict between the game’s two main characters to be shoved to the background, with them only ever intersecting at the beginning and ending of the game, with the mostly detached story of the middle feeling like a chore. By the time you get back to the story you care about in the last hours of the game, you’ll feel so exhausted you might not even want to suffer through it.

Characters, 0/2: Not a single character is executed well in this game. The game ignores the fact that the Fireflies were a band of terrorists to portray Joel’s attack against them as an irredeemable act. Ellie is a psychotic murderer who voices multiple times she doesn’t think what she is doing is right, yet continues to kill hundreds of people so she can kill Abby (which she abandons in the end, making one question why she killed all those people just to give up over killing one more.) Abby is also a psychopath who willingly joins a war she has no stake in, tortures people for pleasure, and enables a drunk man to cheat on his pregnant girlfriend, and yet the player is supposed to somehow root for her. Finally, Tommy is a bumbling fool who tells his identity to complete strangers, becomes a Macguffin for Ellie to chase for half the game, and ends his role in the game by guilt-tripping Ellie into abandoning her family to become his personal hitman. Because every character devolves into a sadistic or unrecognizable person throughout the game, it’s very hard to root for/get invested in the struggles of any of the characters.

Narrative Cohesion with Part 1, 0/1: The problem with creating a sequel to an open-ended moral dilemma is that your narrative will have to take a side in a debate that has no correct answer. Due to this, the game handpicks narrative elements from Part I to try and manipulate the audience to its agenda, forcing the characters within the story to commit acts that conflict with their past experiences. My best example is that of Ellie, who was so repulsed at killing only 2 people in Part 1 (in self defense might I add), that she went into a state of shock and self loathing for months. After 4 years of living in peace, Ellie suddenly has a switch flip in her brain, and she becomes okay with blowing the brains out of people she’s never met and pose no threat to her.

    Gameplay + Design

Gameplay, ½ points: The game possesses an excellent stealth system, and has satisfyingly brutal combat that makes one feel immersed in the grounded world of TLOU. What drags this section down a point in the looting sections in-between, and the overall length of the game. The looting is just boring inventory management, and the combat doesn’t evolve enough to stay fresh as you enter the mid to late game, making the late game feel especially dull.

Graphics, Sound, Controls, 1/1: Not much to say here. It looks, sounds, and feels fantastic. It’s pretty common knowledge at this point.

Innovation, ½: As a sequel, I expect many new features that weren’t in Part 1, especially with the 7 years and budget Naughty Dog had to work with. I give them half credit in this department, for while the game makes great strides in the game’s AI, immersion, and direction, there’s a severe lack of additions in gameplay. Besides being flashier, the gameplay experience is almost identical to the original. Two of the biggest innovations advertised for this game are its jump and prone buttons. I’ll let you judge that for yourself.

    In Summary,

Narrative: 0/5, Messy writing, laughable pacing, and unlikable characters make this game’s story intolerable.
Gameplay/Design: ⅗, Beautiful world design and brutal gameplay leave strong first impressions, but fail to maintain their power over the long runtime due to a lack of innovation.

Overall: 3/10, A hollow narrative without the gameplay to keep it afloat

Its story is largely poignant because of how self-contained it is: not knowing what happened between Joel and Ellie after his fateful, final decision burned a mark into the brains of many who played it, and that open-ended question has lingered for years. But with The Last of Us Part 2, developer Naughty Dog rises to that challenge with not only a complex, profound story that gives it a reason to exist, but also deep and satisfying evolutions to the original’s third-person action/stealth gameplay.

I can’t tell you much about some of Part 2’s best aspects, but not because I don’t want to – I’m bursting to talk with anyone about all the moving, uplifting, and heart-wrenching moments that have been replaying in my mind for days since I first beat this adventure For me it's a great game and it deserves grades.

It feels like you are in a movie, and I enjoyed the combat as well. Initially I thought I would hate this game based on what happened to Joel, since his character was so lovable from the first game, but the game did such a great job of portraying the effects of his actions from the first game, that you understand why it happened, and that life is complicated, with many different perspectives as to groups of people and their actions. -Enemy AI is so good, they will coordinate searches, signal to each other, flank, set up vantage points, lose track of you, you really FEEL like you are being hunted and it is so immersive. The infected are now mixed in with the human enemies to add even more depth to encounters.
-The combat is **** amazing. Every attack is so weighty and visceral, getting shot HURTS, killing enemies is so damn satisfying. No other game even comes close to the immersion of this games combat.

The pacing is perfect. You go from exploring, to a stealth combat encounter, to a chase sequence, to a gunfight, to a story moment and nothing overstays its welcome.

The story is pretty damn good too. The acting performances and dialogue are great as always for Naughty Dog. I really liked the revenge plot turned into humanizing the enemies story that they were going for. I liked that Joel died as a consequence of his actions at the end of the first game. The plot is all about consequences and I was into it.

I'm disappointed so many people didn't like this one because I would love for Naughty Dog to keep putting out masterpieces like this.

It is a technical achievement and arguably the best looking video game ever made. The acting, graphics, animation and sound design are all excellent and the music is good though not on the same level as that from the first game. When you get out of the monotony of stealth and scavenging, the gameplay can be fun because the characters are agile, responsive, and generally great to play as. The guns feel "weighty" and are just satisfying to fire. It's just that the brutal gameplay and all the killing feels contradictory to the themes and message of the story and i found that to be a game breaking issue. It broke immersion and made it hard for me to buy into the feelings and motivations of the characters. Otherwise, It's packed to the brim with difficulty and accessibility options though i never really made use of them.

Overall, it feels good to play but as a story driven game, the story is the most important thing and though i don't hate it, it's easily the weakest part of the game. This game is even more grim, bleak and depressing than the first game and without any glimmer of hope. Gone are the loveable and relatable characters of the first game to be replaced with husks who barely resemble them. For some characters, it makes sense how they got to where they are in the story but they just aren't interesting anymore. Plenty of the added characters are shallow and one-note. I found it hard to care about their conflicts. The core themes of the story are often undermined by the gameplay and there are serious problems with the pacing. The game is far too long, and there are too many tension breaking flashbacks that i'd argue are ineffective in their purposes. On top of that, the resolution to the story feels rushed, unsatisfying and unearned. There are also numerous coincidences, conveniences and contrivances in the story but those are more nitpicks than legitimate grievances.

Like i said, it's good in everything but story. It's admirable that is this is a story that dares to take risks and it isn't all bad actually. There are some genuinely excellent moments and heartfelt scenes sprinkled in here but they are overwhelmed by a story that just wasn't executed properly. If Druckmann played around more with the placement of the flashbacks, gave some characters more to do, and cut certain parts of the story, i'd have liked this more.

I felt like I didn’t want to play anymore when Joel died but that’s why it is a masterpiece, when a death actually makes you feel lost and empty. people just hate what’s different, and to give this game hate just because you can’t see a lesbian couple without thinking someone is pushing an agenda on you, just makes you look like a stupid **** Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't normally leave reviews but I felt obligated based on the train wreck of handling user reviews and feedback post launch. I watched numerous lets plays of this game to develop my opinions of this game and to see if any sense can be made from it.

    Positives:
The gameplay, audio design and AI are very good especially considering this kind of game where story is the most important component and is more of a walking movie style of 'game'.
This game had some great improvements from the first such as enemy groups calling their allies by name and demonstrate a grieving sadness when you kill them making the experience more immersive and making me want to actively avoiding killing where possible.
Visually the game is stunning considering it's a console only release for the PS4 so considering the limited power of the hardware it's very impressive what the artists have done with the game while also making sure it runs acceptably.
The audio team hit it out of the park in this game. The background music helped immensely with creating an atmosphere where I felt tense especially in dark deserted buildings where there's potentially enemies. The voice actors also did an amazing job with what they were given and full credit to them.
The story had it's points where it grabbed me and wanted me to continue playing to see what happened next, this happened regularly for the first half of the game.

    Negatives:
The game was rather buggy for me especially, I don't really see many people talking about this but there were plenty of bugs ready to break my immersion and took away from the experience.

The largest downside by far is the story. This is a huge disappointment especially considering these games are more of a walking movie and falling short on the most important part is a horrific mistake to make.
The structure of the story is the biggest mistake made, if the story was restructured in a way where you played as what many people consider the villain from the start and play through events as they occur in the timeline rather than the monstrosity that made the final cut then maybe people would be able to make a connection to Abby before she kills their favourite character. I know at least I would've.
The death scene itself was very badly done, I don't expect Joel to be a Marvel Superhero but come on, he literally just got taken out by a complete random out of the blue, the entire introduction for this part was a disaster. Wasn't it possible to have any conceivable way of Abby and Joel crossing paths rather than a coincidence, like literally anything, like maybe a civilian shelter distress call or something. And also, why would Joel just give out his information to a complete stranger when in the first game it was shown that he is a very distrusting person.
One of my more recent complains is the being forced to kill animals, in a game of this scale where it advertises inclusions for vulnerable people you should not be forced to do uncomfortable things such as executing Abbys dogs. Also I'm not a fan of sex scenes in games so having to sit through multiple scenes of intimacy made me feel uncomfortable as I felt as if I couldn't skip in case
I missed some important plot piece.

    Summary:
Game is a train wreck of a poorly structured story which is a large let-down considering what this game could've been if that were not the case. Game is rated highly based on what it does right which is almost everything else.

I've played through the entire series all the way through. It's hard to believe that a good game came before this. This game feels like it dug up the corpse of the first game, skinned it, and is using its dead skin to hide from how horrible it truly is. May God have mercy to those that worked hard on this game for nothing.

Honestly this game is a 3 for me because the graphics are great. Everything else is hot garbage.

Easily the most disappointing video game purchase of my entire life. Identical gameplay to its predecessor, god-awful story that takes you completely outside of the immersion that was so incredible in the 1st game.

    Betrayal, Lies, Nonsenses..
This game is 20 hours of torture. One of the few games that I felt uncomfortable to play it through.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
