I've never cried multiple times in a game or thought so much about a game weeks after I played finished it. But this game did that to me. Part I was my favorite game of all time, and now part II is.

PS the overwhelming amount of 0s and 1s were from people in the 1st 24 hours after release, on a 30 hr game. In other words most didn't actually play the game or all of it. Review bombed. People are triggered easily.

I can't believe how good this game is, and I terribly pity those who didn't feel what we've felt while playing it and finishing it.

This game may have a powerful story as the critics say, but it is with a dark story and is not what was expected after all waiting for 7 years. They could have atleast upped their execution.

The Gameplay, Sounds, Design all were top notch. Those were the work of the crunched developers rolling through the countless overtime hours they worked for. The graphics are simply out of this world, as a PC gamer I was really impressed by the visual quality, Naughty Dog really pushed their limits, or rather, the PlayStation 4's limit once more.

The audio is again really amazing, plus the options are highly customizable depending on your setup. Gunshots are actually loud, which isn't the case in other shooters.

Gameplay-wise, The Last of Us Part II is definitely a step up compared to its predecessor, although it isn't perfect it does what it wants to REALLY REALLY well. Would've liked to see more variety in kills, more fights with both humans and infected. More random encounters while walking and such.

I'm giving it a two just to praise the horribly overworked employees that poured their hearts into those portions of the game. The rest of the game is absolute dog **** The characters from the first game act so mind boggling stupid and in a way that is completely inconsistent with their behaviors from the first game. I know people mature and things change but just the series of events that leads up to a main characters demise is absolutely ridiculous. It's clear the writers did this to get from point A to point golf club to push the story of Abby on all of us. The game from that point just spins further into massive plot holes, terrible writing, and honestly probably just one of the worst and unsatisfying overall stories I've ever experienced in my life. I just don't understand how they could go from the quality story and character development in TLoU 1 to this absolute dumpster fire.

AND THAT'S WHY IT IS AWE INSPIRING. To explain the rage I feel towards the people who hated this game and bashed its creators, but loved the first one, I would need to crash the Google Servers. Instead I'll say- enjoy your opinions guys, all I know is it's hard AF to make stuff like this and (in my eyes) Naughty Dog and Neil specifically have succeeded in creating an amazing sequel. Throughout the story there are so many ups and downs, so many times the story doesn't go the way you want it to go, so many times I stopped the game put down the controller and walked around venting about what I'd seen and what I'd 'done' and what was going to happen. AND DON'T THINK THAT'S DONE UNINTENTIONALLY. You are meant to feel an inevitability. You are meant to not be happy and depressed about this game. THAT'S WHY IT'S AMAZING- IT'S RAW AND TRUE. AND IT IS OBVIOUSLY DONE WITH LOVE, SO MUCH LOVE FOR THE CHARACTERS, THE STORY AND THE WORLD. Those are humans I saw on the screen, even if I know it's actually Ashley doing Ellie's voice in a funny costume, I believe more of the existence of Ellie than of Ashley, because I know Ellie, Joel, Tommy, Abby, Dina, hell even Isaac... and not one of these character's motives are unjustified, just like true humans. For me this game is untouchable. Because the characters are so well crafted that any action of theirs, or most situations in which they appear, feel true and natural (at least to me). I was ready for any ending, I just hoped it wouldn't be underwhelming, and it wasn't, the last part closes the circle, and sets the motives right, of how the destruction of the last glimmer of hope can cause so much destruction. That's life for you folks. And that's why I can't rate the game itself.... I both love it, but I also 'hate' it, because Life is Suffering and it's hard to experience so much suffering In a virtual world and add that on top of the real world. My suggestion is to play HZD righr after you finish TLOU2, as I'm planning on doing rn. PS: (yes the whole PC messages in the story were predictable, however they are incorporated well enough to not feel like pure propaganda)

    (ONE SPOILER PART)

THE FACT THAT ABBY IS THE 'GOOD GUY' IN THIS STORY, THAT HER SOUL IS THE FIRST TO LET GO OF THE HATE, AT WHAT I CALL THE 'FIRST ENDING' IS ABSOULTUELY AMAZING. I BELIEVE THAT LETTING THE STORY HAVE A SORT OF 'HAPPY ENDING' IS THE RIGHT CHOICE, BECAUSE IT GIVES HOPE TO THE PLAYERS TOO, THAT WHILE THERE'S A LOT OF UNNECESSARY SUFFERING WE'VE BROUGHT ON TO THE WORLD IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO STOP. ELLIE'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS FULLY JUSTIFIED, AND BEUTIFUL IN BOTH ITS SIMULTANEOUS SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY. AND THE REASON WHY JOEL IS DEAD IS BECAUSE HIS STORY HAS ALREADY BEEN TOLD. HE IS NOTHING BUT A GHOST OF GUILT, LOVE AND PURPOSE. THE PURPOSE THAT ELLIE HAD LOST WHEN SHE WASN'T KILLED FOR THE VACCINE. THE PURPOSE THAT WHEN MIXED WITH GUILT MADE ELLIE CHOSE TO GO AFTER ABBY AGAIN INSTEAD OF STAYING WHIT JJ AND HER LOVER. AND THE LAST BIT OF HUMANINTY LEFT IN ELLIE THAT AFTER 'WINNING' AGAINST ABBY MADE HEE REALISE THAT NOTHING IS GOING TO BRING JOEL BACK, AND THAT KILLING ABBY WOULD JUST BRING LEV AFTER HER, DINA AND JJ. OR MAYBE JUST THAT THIS ISN'T WHO SHE WAS, AND THIS ISN'T WHO SHE WANTS TO BE. THIS IS BASSICALY THE STORY OF THE FIRST HALF OF NARUTO SHIPPUDEN ONLY A TAD BIT MORE REALISTIC AND LESS IDEALISTIC.

Gameplay is fine, graphics are great, but the story, the way it is structured, it just cannot work, and ruins retroactively what the previous title set up. For me the story was the main selling point of this series, and because of that I'm hugely disappointed, and honestly also somewhat angry. If you don't care about the story though, you might enjoy it.

The complex themes, characters and world presented stick with you long after you put the controller down and I couldn’t not compare what I felt and seen while playing to real world events and people. There definitely isn’t one single message in the game but the cycle of violence and how trauma affects the mind and body really stood out for me. The story feels more stretched out compared to the first game but in a good way, although some parts during the second half could have been shorter and the prologue could have been a bit longer (what in my opinion would benefit the overall pacing of the game). The gameplay develops almost in every way compared to the first game, it’s more dynamic and realistic than ever, what serves the story during times making the player feel disgusted by his or her own actions during gameplay what ultimately makes him/her feel more empathy towards your enemies when you kill their friends or loved ones (even their dogs). In the graphical standpoint, I couldn’t state enough how beautiful this post-apocalyptic world is. The sound design, music and representation aspect of the game also deserve a shout out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Best game of all time. The story is absolutely incredible, there’s twists, it’s heartbreaking, the themes are deep, the flashbacks are amazing. I could go on and on but I’ve never felt so emotionally affected by a game or even another piece of media. Joel dying so early was gut wrenching but set the game up so well. Even with that I actually grew attached to Abby who was a very complex and well written character. All the side characters were also amazing and unique. Besides the story the game looks mind blowing, the fear factor is fantastic and makes you feel vulnerable and like you’re just trying to survive. The combat is extensive and offers lots of variety, gameplay is extremely smooth and satisfying. This easily goes down as my number 1 game of all time and it will take something special to top this. I get why people hate on it because a lot of the story is very controversial and hard to stomach. But if you go in with an open mind and challenge yourself to really understand the characters it will make it a hell of a journey. I applaud Naughty Dog for making such bold decisions as it created a truly remarkable experience. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everything about this game except for the story is great. There's plot holes everywhere. The first plot hole comes from abby getting pinned down by zombies between a fence and a wall being they are zombies any chance to grab her they would have taken yet none of the zombies really grabbed for her.
2 Tommy taking stupid pills and giving up their names like he doesn't know people could be after joel for killing all those fireflies that probably had families.
3 I can't actually say how many contrived plot armor points there are for abby.
We could have just waited to kill joel in till half way through the story and that would've been better. They could've had abby and ellie work together for a little bit and make the character more likeable. But no the choose to kill off joel a fan favorite by the hands of a brand new character. The way she did it made me not want to play the rest of the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion the combination of forgiveness and Revenge perfectly mixes making the game a bitter sweet experience.yes Joel dies in a way that is untraditional to his behavior...But thinking about it logically he’s gotten 5 years older probably in his 50’s and has a new life in a protected place with not many issues,he has no one to protect so he lets his guard down and pays for it.Joel wasn’t supposed to be this great guy,he used violence as a first choice in almost everything in the first game.Him taking Ellie from the hospital was selfish but he tries to make up for what he did and Ellie never forgives him fully for it until the game is finally over. Then Ellie not killing Abby shows that she is finally at peace with Joel’s death and doesn’t need to do what she originally presumed to find peace...killing people. She finds out that trying it get revenge only ends in more pain and death. As we see with Abby after she kills Joel she still has nightmares until saving Yara and lev.Other than that the graphics are the best I’ve ever seen in games. The story though originally looks like a failure I feel over time people will see what it was meant to be delivered as.One last criticism I’d like to have seen a different opening to the game like the museum scene there instead of Joel explaining things we already know to tommy. The game gives you the perfect balance of disliking Abby and liking Abby to the point where you’ve got her in the water you don’t know if you want to kill her or not.Ellie loses everything just to have the feeling of inner peace.Thats all in time it will be scene as a masterpiece. But this isn't one of those. It should be broken down into two categories: the story and the gameplay. I've played through it 3 times now. The first time was the full game - cutscenes included. And from start to finish the score fluctuated. But as the game went on, it just became drawn out and monotonous. When reaching certain climaxes, you revert back to what almost feels like an eternity ago. Which literally is 2 hours into the game. And it ruins the pacing of the game too much.

After playing through it initially, I wasn't sure I would be able to play it again. But luckily this game has skippable cutscenes. Which brings me to category two of how this game should be played. When you don't see the story and in a sense, it's just 1 long gameplay sequence, the pacing doesn't feel bothersome. The story that tries to force you to feel a certain way, can for the most part, be ignored if you choose the character(s) you're playing aren't part of any narrative. With that said, in the latter part of the game, I feel like the characters are boring and not as interesting as the ones you meet in the first half.. and at times, even come off as annoying. However, when you don't have to see their story entirely and can skip it, you experience a great game that is a solid 9/10, if you loved The Last of Us.

But that's unfortunately the problem. The story itself is just trying to tell you that you can't pick sides. You need to understand everything before you choose. It's like a sad attempt at begging. One half of the story is telling you this is why you're taking this journey. Then the second half tells you that this journey should not be taken. The writing is just bad and that's why a side must always be taken. Even if it isn't the right. Who knew Bungie's writing with Destiny would be better than a Naughty Dog game? At least they understand how satisfaction works in video games. After a 25 hour game that had its ups and downs, it needed a solid, fulfilling ending.. but unfortunately, it was just lifeless with no reward for your time spent. It tried to be deep, but deeply failed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a lot to be said both about this game and its stakeholders. It is indeed hypocritical for Neil Druckmann to claim that the game is intended to be divisive and yet cry afoul that people are not liking the game.

The game is to be praised for their amazing graphics and stunning environments, much like the previous game. However, the gameplay feels more repetitive and puzzles felt too simplistic. Moreover, much is to be said about the storytelling of the game.

The characters Joel and Tommy were reduced to a shell of their former selves. With almost 50 years of survival experience between themselves, it is uncharacteristic of Joel and Tommy to leave themselves vulnerable to strangers. At the start of the outbreak, Joel and Tommy leave a family with children on the roadside despite having room in their vehicle, showing how extremely cautious they are despite not knowing what's happening. Also, compare this with Joel's encounter with the "injured" Hunter in Pittsburgh, where he correctly assumed that the Hunter was faking his injury in order to ambush them. Living in settlements would not have reduced this caution. Maria almost shot her brother-in-law, despite Joel and Ellie claiming to not be a threat, only to be stopped by Tommy verifying Joel's identity. This plot hole could be seen as lazy storywriting, allowing the player to handwave Joel's reduced caution for plot.

The death of Joel is where the fanbase diverges. One side praises the game's dedication to subvert any expectations, another side laments the use of Joel's death being reduced for simple shock value. Contrast this with the use of Sarah's death in order to paint what kind of father and uncle characters Joel and Tommy are. How they are willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect those that they love.

As you continue from shock and anger from Joel's death, you start to sympathize with Ellie's quest for revenge, sharing her hatred and desire to avenge the death of Joel. The entire Ellie's arc makes you build up bloodlust for Abby's death. When the game tosses you into Abby's arc, now you're confused why you're playing as the "villain" of the story. At some points of the game, you "carelessly" let Abby die to appease that anger. Despite the game continuing to paint Abby in a positive light, the game fails to make me empathize with her character. The entire time I'm playing as her makes me want to go back to Ellie's story. When the game finally reveals that the surgeon killed by Joel was Abby's dad, I could not empathize with him even more. To see that the surgeon was more than willing to sacrifice another person's daughter, especially having a daughter of his own, it shows that if left in that scenario, he would also sacrifice Abby for the "greater good".

I felt that the the game should've ended with Ellie and JJ sitting at the farm, with both sides having lost and no clear winners. However, the third arc of relaunching Ellie's vengeance against Abby felt very unnecessary extension of the game in order to increase its runtime.

How would the game have been better told? I feel that if they started with Abby's arc first. Telling the narrative from Abby's perspective first would have garnered all the player's sympathy for her, especially after establishing that her father is an important character that was brutally murdered by a psychopath (whilst hiding the fact that the psychopath was indeed Joel). They could narrate that the killer's name was "Miller" and, while not revealing that it was Joel, allow the player to kill him without realizing it's Joel (they could make him look even scruffier or more rugged). This sets in the player's mind that they finally gave Abby's dad justice and has avenged his death.

Upon switching the game to Joel's arc, this arc will culminate with in his eventual death. However, the player has come to the realization of the horror that they ended up killing him in the earlier arc. The players justify that there are no good guys or bad guys in this world, they are only each good guys in their own perspective.

There are no politics at play in this game whatsoever, so go ahead and ignore any review stating that The Last of Us 2 is somehow politically motivated or forced to be politically correct. It's a story about love and hate– unfortunately, to many misguided people, love is somehow political, and a warning against hate is interpreted as "wokeness". Also, many people struggling with the idea of being told a linear narrative-based story rather than being given the option to change the outcome. That's not a critique of the game, that's a critique of storytelling in it of itself, and represents a terrible ability to take in new ideas and information. The Last of Us 2 is a brilliant game containing a powerful story that takes maturity to digest, hence its M rating.
