With a narrative focus on the ramifications surrounding blind revenge for the sake of someone you love, the themes featured throughout propel the actions of the playable characters to the brink. In terms of gameplay, there are massive improvements from the first game in the series. The HUD is more unified and the supplement system is made far more rewarding. The level design keeps one from being stuck for too long, even with the puzzles in the game. Audio and Visuals are once again the best on the console. They truly allow the player to be immersed within the world of the game.

This game is not for everyone. It depends on the players ability to separate their agency from the playable characters, as well as asks for the player to be open to empathy towards every character within the game. For some, the actions of certain characters will prevent that from being possible. While I thought the game had a bit of pacing issues within the second half of the game, it didn’t detract from my overall experience. I consider this game a masterpiece which lives up to and exceeds the first game.

The Last of Us Part 2 achieves the impossible, it matches the quality, ambition and intensity of Part 1 (and in many ways even surpassing it). The crunchy mechanics, bleak aesthetic, off-putting soundscape and satisfying subtle character arcs are exactly what you would expect from a studio that only makes industry leading games. However, it's in the game's writing that Last of Us Part 2 really shines. The story uproots and lays bare difficult conversations that the gaming industry (and gamers most importantly) have only began to address and unpack; bigotry, misogyny and self-entitlement. You don't have to look far to see that this story has ruffled the most toxic feathers in gaming; whether hacking servers, click-bait articles, reviewing bombing, whinging reddit threads or (you guessed it) a petition to rewrite the story. Clearly the industry and community has plenty of work to do and I applaud Naughty Dog for not seeking to please gamers - but to make them stop, think and challenge themselves. Controversy is good. Well done Naughty Dog you should feel very proud. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Gameplay was the a mixture of Last of Us and Uncharted 4, the level design was the same as always. The soundtrack and sound effects were godlike so it’s like a typical Naughty Dog Game. The Story was easily the worse part of the game, this is possibly THE biggest disappointment in gaming history. And I’ll go through each point and compare it to the First last of Us. the Characters either went two ways, killed for shock value, bland as hell Character Assassinated. Joel was watered down, Joel never trusts anyone he doesn’t know, even normal Joel 20 years before the events of TLOU1 didn’t trust people, 20 years later Joel was willingly gonna run over a “hurt” person and damn near killed Henry twice if not for Sam and Ellie stopping him. Abby was a bland dueterologist, you can’t kill off your most beloved character possibly ever and then expect the player to feel bad for Abby, and let’s talk about character development, EVERY SINGLE TIME a character started having character development, they get written off in the name of Shock value Dina, Ellie, Manny, Jesse, Yara etc. Nora, Owen, Issac, & Mel were all bland as hell in Abby’s story but were good as side characters in Ellie’s, they served a better purpose in as mysterious side characters than bland main characters. Naughty Dog since 2007 has been. Authenticity with characters you can relate with to and believe in to the point you sit there and say “I believe in this, I want to play this I’ll pay to play this, and when it’s over did it deliver” that’s it. Last of Us 2 had neither of these... Also while I’m here. It really annoys me how much they changed Ellie, Ellie being the sadistic maniacal stone cold Killer doesn’t fit her character, she hadn’t gone through enough to have that much of a transformation in FIVE YEARS. Ofc she was always fun loving, emotional and the sharpest tool in the shed BUT* if you cross she only killed to protect HERSELF OR JOEL. Have some sort of consistency. Joel being the sadistic maniacal stone cold killer worked because he wasn’t a hero nor was he the villain he was a Survivor, surviving by any means necessary in a desolated world and it took him a span of TWENTY Years to get that far and had already gone through a lot even prior to losing Sarah. Storytelling and Theme I believe they used a ton of dumb logic and plot twists but some of the plot twists makes sense. For example Abby being a firefly that made sense why she wanted to Kill Joel but Dina being revealed that she’s pregnant and writing her off as Ellie’s partner through the journey made no sense it was clear that they were the best duo (outside of Joel and Ellie) and the entire narrative doesn’t fit the Last of Us. Me personally I’ll always say the Last of Us Part II should’ve never existed because the first one was so conclusive and gave you the feeling of “what happens next is up to your imagination”. Last of Us 2 doesn’t fit that part 1 was essentially about the infection first and the Fireflies/Hunters second Part 2 is essentially warring factions first and don’t forget the infection is sorry of kinda around. But the glaring issue is the lack of character development. No one had any development. Also not necessarily the lack of characters but the lack of meaningful characters that served to A. advance the Plot and served a purpose and not only teach the player a valuable lesson but teach us the player a valuable lesson. Sam and Henry taught us how too strong a bond could be and if you lose that person and the ramifications of losing that person could cause you to fall into that very same fate. Tess’ infection and death put them on there path and started Joel’s path on becoming a believer of the cure. Sarah’s death is what hardened Joel and that and Tess death is ultimately why he ended up saving Ellie in the end. What exactly happened in Last of Us 2 that really had ramifications outside of maybe Joel’s death. The second biggest issue is the fact that no one had any good chemistry or rather, in Ellie’s story they wrote them off too quickly for us to even truly pay attention. Take for example Tess and Joel they had perfect chemistry, jesting & talking with one another the ultimate Authenticity so when Tess died it actually meant something. When Sam and Henry died it meant something. Hell when Dina got wrote off as a supporting party member it meant something. When Jesse got shot it was for shock value and didn’t need to happen at all. The third and biggest problem is how they dumbed down Joel and how they killed him off so quickly and then forced use to play with him via flashbacks. Joel would’ve never gone back to help Abby (an unknown stranger he didn’t know) as shown when in the first game when he tried to run over the man who was pretending to be hurt, tried to kill Henry not once but twice, and told Tommy to keep driving when that family on the side of the road was stuck on the roadside. I saw one leak that came out 2 months before the game. It was a horrible(for a character) and major plot point. I sat there and thought well I need context. So I stayed away from anything related till I played the game for myself. I finished it last night. Feeling Satisfied yet I didn't always feel that way and I think that was the point. Game play was taken to the next level. Fun and fluid. Getting excited when looting for ammo and upgrades. Feeling terrified when you hear a Clicker or Seeing a Runner dash past you or the Roar of Shambler. When you encounter the infected you must be aggressive. Humans are a little more complex because they have gun, dogs, and tend to rally against you so stealth is mostly a good option. 60% you play as Ellie and her quest for revenge for the loss of a loved one. The other 40% is a new character Abby. The Game plays off the events of part I that bleed into part II. 3 days are with Ellie and those same 3 days as Abby and the ending is the Collision. Abby is hard to put empathy on because of her choice at the beginning of the game. When you play as her you don't care but the game continues to show she was justified and is a decent human but it's hard to turn Babyface (good guy) when you have nuclear heat as a Heel.(bad guy) In this post apocalyptic world good and bad isn't enough it's more grey. It's interesting to see a character you care about turn to revenge and how dark that takes you even if it's out of love. Flipside take a character you don't like and make selfless choices to help others then you begin to feel empathy. The Last of Us is still very much about Joel and Ellie. The scene at the Museum had my smiling and in tears. The Jurassic Park references in that was amazing and loved that. The Father/Daughter relationship is still the core. It's complex. It has to answer the hard questions left by part I. While I don't agree with every story choice doesn't mean it's a bad game and I feel like fans can't get past certain choices and won't experience it for themselves which I kinda get but you have to play the game NOT watch cut scenes to understand the journey. Also the graphics are Apex for PS4! So beautiful to look at. The Last of Us was one the greatest video games. While I don't think Part II surpasses it. I think it's a worthy sequel. The Last Cut scene was sad yet happy.

Naughty dog pulls no punches in setting the theme, playing with your emotions, and challenging your perspective. Make no mistake, this game tells the story of an epic tragedy void of heroes and villains, and full of rife and conflict, leading to an emotional payoff that teaches us the lesson that acts of evil resonate, but so do too, acts of kindness; and while these acts of evil or vengeance can be destructive, a single act of kindness can be the sole light that guides someone out of the darkness. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As the game began, I was hit with immediate nostalgia when I saw Ellie. The snowball fight while being a tutorial was also a welcome introduction to Dina. I knew nothing about this game and I was able to soak it in. My mind was coming up with theories left and right and then when we first switch over to Abby as she’s talking to Owen I immediately went to “oh **** These are fireflies “ When IT happened I gasped and felt outraged. Pure hatred toward the WLF, but with the outrage also a slight bit of understanding. Abby saved Ellie. She didn’t have to, but she realized after delivering the killing blow that she didn’t get the satisfaction she wanted. She stopped herself. The game escalated quickly from there into a pure revenge story. Once we hit Seattle and got the stack of photos, I thought it would open up into a free form murder quest where you can go after them all how you want. But Naughty Dog delivered something so tight and considered and the story was allowed to play out in the darkest bleakest ways. But with the darkness comes the light. When this game has bright spots, it is blinding. I loved the jump back to Museum. The little jokes between Dina and Ellie, the song that you would miss Ellie play if you didn’t go back to the record shop and all the other tiny nuances that left this as a great book that I couldn’t put down. Then the switch happened. They pulled an MGS2 on us and made us play as the ‘villain.’ I saw it from the jump that oh okay I get it, you want me to feel something for the baddie so that when I kill her I am felt feeling gross. A few mins in, I figured I would do a quick scene with her and then we would snap back to the Theater. But no, we went through the whole game again. Slowly but surely I began to feel things for Abby and even worse, began to feel remorse because I knew what would happen to each and every one of these WLF characters. Poor Vita girl. Just wanted to play Hotline Miami. As I got closer and closer to this antagonist I began to empathize with her more than I did Ellie. Ellie: she’s immune. Could have been the cure and had her life mean something, finds out her father figure doomed humanity, then he gets murdered for it. Goes out on a revenge mission. I get it. Abby: a firefly. Dad is on the cusp of developing a cure to save the world. Everyone she knows and loves gets murdered. Misses out on the chance to live a normal life and instead trains her body to become the perfect yoked killing machine to get the boogyman who took everything from her. I get that too. (Abby never missed arm day in her life) I love the fact that the scar leader, in any other game would have had such significance. She would have been Yara and levs mother or at the very least a big boss battle. But no, in this game she’s long dead and it’s only through letters of people that come after her and passing dialogue from Lev that give you insight into who she was and the religion she founded. Lev and Yara. They are a fantastic pair. From the onset, I knew I would like them and then when it’s hinted at why the Scars call Lev an apostate. Just such fantastic writing. It’s understated and not even played up for a shock. I’m pretty sure it’s just two separate lines of dialogue and a letter. But it’s handled like just another situation in the last of us 2. Understated and with respect. I found myself dreading getting back to the theatre as Abby because while I have now grown to love her, I really didn’t want to see her kill Ellie, let alone Dina. Thankfully the game did not end there. This game is a game about revenge, no doubt about that. But it’s also a game about the consequences and of the after. Both Abby and Ellie get what they feel they needed and both are able to walk away. Both stories end in darkness, but they also move to the light. ——

Gameplay-wise, this is probably the best stealth game I’ve played since metal gear solid 5. Everything is always by the skin of your teeth, and enemies have weight and consequence. You feel as though they are real people and such I went out of my way to kill as few as possible in certain situations. Graphically, I’d say it’s the most impressive game I’ve played. I stunned with what they do with lighting. The audio especially with headphones is probably the best I’ve been immersed in a world especially hearing those horrifying whistles close behind me and not knowing exactly what it means. This game is by far the best piece of media I have ever experienced. As a game, it has its issues, but as a piece of interactive media this is by far my favourite thing that I have seen, read or heard. This is not the story that I had created for Joel and Ellie in my mind. But this is something so much greater. This is the story that Neil Druckman, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Shannon Woodward & Ashley Johnson created with a team of brilliant individuals. Phenomenal.

This game looks amazing especially if playing in HDR the looks and the attention to detail everything thats visuall within the game looks amazing and ND nails it here. But lets beat around the bush this game hurts through sorrow and hate the same that goes through each and every one of our minds that has played this game the way Joel died, the way Ellie and others went after the WLF to avenge Joel and the journey that has left Ellie completely broken, alone and lost for me it definitely worries me what will happen to all the characters, Dina and JJ what will happen to Ellie and this is my opinion what will happen to Abby and Lev. But let's get down to it who's right and who's wrong Joel for killing abbys dad in the first game or Abby for killing Joel in the second game that's lost me because if Joel didn't have killed abbys dad they wouldn't have been this game but that fact Joel cared for Ellie in let's face it a bad decaying world and left Joel no choice in saving her if the fireflies weren't a bunch of **** to Joel in the first game this wouldn't of happen. Joel did what needed to be done. On the other hand, Abby killing Joel was it truly down to the death of her dad or was it that Joel took the cure from everyone leading to the fireflies been killed throughout the story because they hyped up that they would be a possible cure meaning Ellie and Joel stopping that making everyone think that the fireflies were lying but technically they weren't and dying for it would scare any folk including Abby that's why I think in my opinion its split down the middle did Joel deserve to die come from a mentality opinion, yeah kind of he did piss a lot of people off and unfortunately it caught up to him and he died but did he deserve what happened to him in that basement no not at all Abby's dads death was quick but Joels wasn't it was long and painful with the shotgun to the knee and golf club. Joel and Tommy saved Abby from the infected if it wasn't for them she would have been dead it was in that estate it was life or death rule one of surviving don't tell random people your names its a sign of weakness and Abby clicked on straight away it's him he killed him therefore, she did what had to be done. I had mixed emotions about this game from Anger from the plot of the game to happy when you get to see Joel and Ellie have some time together with the museum being one of the coolest parts of all the flashbacks being and true fan of dinosaurs and space at a young age. The fact you're constantly switched between both Ellie and Abby in the game was night and day especially the one after one in the theatre scenes myself and surly millions of more was like huh? I get it ND was making Abby lost like Ellie at the end that's why I think at the end of all this everyone loses. Ellie lost Joel and others along the Journey sparking her rage and Abby the same way Losing her Dad most likely her Firefly friends that most likely died due to the while cure to her WLF friends that Ellie and Tommy killed to her and Lev getting captured. In this games time nobody wins and it's cruel and unforgiving but that's how it is survival of the fittest and all. Did I enjoy it, in the end, yes and no the emotional sides yes ill admit it some stuff in this game hit me hard but how the story turns out just really didn't cut it just because I've seen way too many revenge plots in games and they all lead down a similar world how the hell is ND going to end up finishing this story I have no idea. It's comparable to the last season of Game of Thrones: poor character development and bad plot execution. When I had to rate the game to this point it would get 9/10 but after it and the last part of the game that feels a bit like filler I can’t give the game more than 5 points. Many story parts feel forced and don’t make sense.

I totally respect the risky way naughty dog went with this game but I think it doesn’t work out. After a few days since completing the game I think it was a cool idea but they chose the wrong franchise and ruined some of the best characters in gaming history.

I think it’s not fair to trash the scores but it’s also not fair to say the most bad reviews are from trans- and homophobic users. There are many reasonable critics which only critic the game itself and not its agenda.

Last of Us set its self apart from other games because of its story, and well written developed characters as such my expectations on a sequel was high. Its sad to say they failed on that, last of us 2 gave us characters who felt different from how they were established from the previous game. Good gameplay , great graphics, but the story felt flat and unbelievable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost, I dont give two donkey turds what your political or social beliefs are. Second, I have played the game from beginning to end. I have been gaming since I had been given a hand me down Atari which was around the early 80s I believe. With that being said, on to my personal review of this game. The graphics were impressive. I loved the environment and the lighting that was used through out. It gave a very "dirty" look in certain terrains and textures. The sound was very good. Playing with headphones really makes every sound seem like it's right next to you. Now on to the plot or story of the game, simply put, I thought it was stupid. I mean, how do you let someone who killed a person that was like a father figure to you go at the end on the basis of "There has been enough killing"? Seriously??? Didnt we just spend over 30 hours sneak killing some people and some dogs just to progress? Oh but we are meant to believe that right when you have the person (Abby) at your mercy and are about ready to Fallout some justified vengeance, you have an epiphany and let her go. If Naughty Dog only spent more time on the story board than pandering to woke agenda my personal review would be higher. And yes I would have scored this a little higher but I admit that Neil Druckmann's online behavior and lack of acceptance of criticism may have influenced my scoring in this game. That and the fact that most places (gamestop) are not accepting returns as of this time. If you ate curious about this game, borrow it from a friend. Dont waste your money on this. It's really not worth it. Or wait for it to be on sale like 19.99 or lower. Expand

The graphics and environment are pretty good, but the game is terrible in terms of story, numerous plot holes, enemy AI (Buggy as hell, melee attacks sometimes wouldn't even register), and the fact that we were told we didn't have to kill any dogs in the game, but made us kill one speaks volumes. I do not recommend this game to anyone who was a fan of the Last of Us. Rest in Peace Joel. **** you, Abby Expand

Story: When they want you to be angry you will be. When it wants you to be sad you will be. When a story makes you feel exactly what the writers want you to feel then the story does its job and this game does that better than pretty much any other game I've ever played. Its not a bad story just because it doesn't go the way you wanted. i'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible, but a lot of the negative reviews come from people who saw the leaks and never even played the game, or started the game got to a point something happens and they just say nope its trash and never finish it. If you completely finished this game and still didn't like it then you are entitled to you opinion, but that's not where most of the bad reviews come from.

Game play: What can i say if you played the last of us 1 and enjoyed the game play. Then you will enjoy the game play here as its similar to the first game, but everything is very much improved.

Graphics: this is probably the most obvious thing about the game. Its absolutely Beautiful. I can't tell you the number of times i just stopped whatever i was doing to just admire the scenery. whether it was looking at snow covered mountains or taking in all the over grown grass and trees.

Sound: this is another area where the last of us 2 shines. everything from the sound of the guns to the music just feels right. The little things like enemy reaction to seeing someone die, and calling out their name, or how certain characters communicate without ever saying a word, but it somehow just make sense is crazy.

So to sum all this up The Last of Us 2 is a roller coaster of emotions. i laughed, i cried, i was angry, happy, sad. it has its tense moments through out as you would expect, but at no point did i ever feel completely overwhelmed or that i just didn't care. So yes this game is not perfect, but it is without an doubt in my mind a Masterpiece.

What really ruins this game, is the story. Never I felt so disconnected from the characters. I played the first last of us recently and I learned to love these characters and their interactions but this game ruins all that. Everything the old characters do seems out of character and unjustifiable, it ruined the whole immersion for me. I can't relate to the new characters at all, their reasons seem so unjustifiable and out of place. It's everything so unappealing that I found myself skipping areas and forcing myself through the game just to get to the ending.
The ending could be worse but could be a lot better as well - just takes the meaning of the whole character development until that point.
The main characters very badly written - Ellie is a shadow of what it used to be and Abby couldn't be more unappealing and predictable.
The whole writing of this game is bad, there's a lot of scenes for shock value, plot armour, pacing issues and most of the story is flashbacks inside flashbacks inside flashbacks.
The most enjoyable story moments for me was the interactions of young Ellie and Joel, which was made the first game great...
I think the game could be a lot better if the line of the event were laid out differently - this would allow for more connection with the characters and now what drives them.
I will not play this game again and I wish I never played it in the first place, I fell like this entry takes a bit of quality to the franchise.

The first the last of us was about two people recovering each other in a world where everything seems to be hopeless, it was about an unsual kind of love: the one about a man and his “daugher”, and not about the overrated love story. It ended with hope, the image of a man ready to risk his life and to do the craziest things ever to save the one who made him understand that there can be cure for past tragedy, he actually says “no matter what you keep finding something to fight for”: no matter what may bring you down in your life, you’ll always have the opportunity to not give up and and find something for which is worth living.
And then what about the second chapter? what does it says to the player? To me it seems to be saying the exact opposite, contradicting the same message of the first one( and the dlc): life is nothing but keep suffering, it is empty, everything (so every happiness) is temporary, you end up living alone and with no reason to move on. I mean, I don’t know about others, but I used to rewatch tlou 1 to keep feeling that warm ambience and hope, and now guess If i’m going to do the same with the second one... That’s such a pity.
Anyway, Of course graphics are to, but what’s the point of something that has a nice “container” if then the viewers don’t manage to create a true deep (constructive ) connection with protagonists? Emotions and feelings are The ingredients to make a movie/videogame or whatever immortal and a legend

Visually the game is gorgeous, I loved the gameplay from the first game and this one is very similar. I don't agree with some that it needs to evolve so much when you have dozens of first person shooters that use the same engines and don't feel very different to each other, there was only one Last of Us. If you enjoyed the gameplay mechanics from the first one there's no reason you wont enjoy this one too, I personally love the gameplay mechanics.
Unfortunately its impossible to play it and avoid the story, and if you are also a big fan of the first one you will quite likely be hugely disappointed by the direction they take in the second one. It feels very jolting which although I'm sure was their intention, it just takes too much away from the first one and doesn't build on it in a meaningful way. Their treatment of the characters we grew to love in my opinion is just horrible. The inclusion of representation (gender identity politics) feels forced and transparent which comes across both lecturey and unnecessary in a post apocolyptic world whereas games like Dragonage Inquisition were able to include it without having that effect. It also felt a bit immersion breaking to play as a female character that was obviously on steroids with hulking arms and legs - where does she get access to that much quality and quantity of food along with steroids in a post apocolyptic world where people are just trying to survive (the steroid physique is not an exaggeration). To be clear I have no issue playing as female characters and where choice is given I usually do just that, I chose to play as Kassandra on AC Odyssey.

As far as Last of Us gameplay goes again I feel that has remained in tact and improved, visually, functionally and shouldn't disappoint anyone familiar with and fond of the first, I would definitely buy a separate multiplayer if that's the route they choose to take.

Regarding the story, it seems good to me that a dramatic and dark turn has been made, since the same game means that there are neither good nor bad, that the only thing that can be found in the last of us part 2 are points of view and thoughts different from those of the protagonists, do not lie, it hurt me that Joel's death was so fast, but outside of that, the game is really fine, it has a deeper narrative and even the songs that are played in the trailers and in the game they have to do partly for the same story, an example would be true faith, which basically says that ellie's revenge is like a drug, a drug that makes you crazy, and around the game you can to see how Ellie little by little is destroying herself inside and out until she is left alone because of revenge as dyna abandons her and because of Ellie many die.
Regarding the End, it bothered me a little that ellie did not kill abby, but after a few minutes I understood that with that final flashback of joel, ellie realized that even if she kills abby, joel would not return and everything would be the same and the cycle of Vengeance would not end, what ellie does in the End is to act with the head and in the most human way possible, it is at that moment in which there is an explosion of emotions, I feel that this game was made for a more mature perspective and dark, a story that does not focus on the typical, for me the end, as sour as it may be, has seemed to me a good closure for the story of ellie, I know that many do not like the game and directly classify it as rubbish, but really the game is something that we are not used to, and for that reason and its history or gameplay, etc., at least for me it is a good game

Truly breathtaking game that delves into the nuances of grief, revenge, love, and futility. Absolutely one of the best games I’ve ever played. The graphics and gameplay are outstanding and the performances are incredible. I don’t think I will be able to stop thinking about this game for a long time. Utterly phenomenal.

I think the story is so powerful that people directed their anger and frustration that were intentionally developed in the game towards the producers which lead to such negative impacts at first. But if you manage to stay immersed in the game, the narrative you get to experience is really well written and is capable of inducing a lot of reflections from the players perspective. In the end i believe a lot of the discussions this game created tells us a lot more about the gaming community than the game itself, which is the impact that you expect from such a well crafted masterpiece. Thank you Naughty Dog and all involved for this, hope to see more games in this direction! Expand

The story was the primary let down of The Last of Us 2. The dialogue was awkward, clunky, and just didn't feel real. The new characters feel hollow and, try as they might, Naughty Dog just can't get you to care for them.
The gameplay is solid enough and the scenery is heartbreakingly gorgeous. If this game was done with no dialogue, letting it speak through the characters body language

If this game was done with no dialogue, letting it speak through the characters body language and the environment I have no doubt that would have made it a masterpiece. As it sits its fun enough to play, but the characters are handled with such disrespect it drags it down to unthinkingly low depths.

The game becomes repetitive and tedious at some point. The narrative is poorly developed and some events are forced into the story, they happen as a result of a series of miraculous coincidences. The game uses some cheap emotional manipulation techniques to create fake empathy for certain characters. The intention is there, the way to get to it just doesn't work.

Sometimes, it even feels as though the writer of this game is not the same as the first one. Everything that was created in Part I was thrown away in Part II. It is difficult to believe the actions of certain characters, especially in a world like the one they try to depict in the story. Also, the behavior of the characters in this game go against what they had established in the first one.

I understand that the false advertisement was done in order to protect the story, but I can't help thinking that they did it to trick people into thinking this game would be an adventure similar to the first one in some way, and so ensure sales on day 1, relying on the nostalgic feeling people had for the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is amazing! I was very reluctant about buying initially due to all the bad reviews, however I am so glad I did get it. I was a big fan of the last of us and enjoyed this game just as much, if not more than the original. The way the game manages to turn you from hating abby for what she did, to really understanding her actions is something I've never seen in a game before. Ellie will always be my favourite of the 2, however her actions throughout are just as violent as abbys. The way they build abbys character through lev and yara is one of my favourite parts about the game. It's probably an unpopular opinion but I'm glad they didn't kill each other and both realised the damage revenge and bitterness can have. All that being said however, I do agree that Joel's death was the most heartbreaking moment of the game and he was definitely missed but that meant the flashback moments felt more emotional. The graphics are the best I've seen in a ps4 game. Finally the gameplay is brilliantly tense, I constantly felt on edge throughout. The only reason this isn't a ten is,as great as the gameplay is, it can get slightly repetitive however it is only a very minor issue in an amazing game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really believe that a 3.5 rating from "gamers" is unfair to The Last Of Us Part II, considering the graphics and gameplay are amazing. I spent a lot of time appreciating the realistic textures of the characters, their clothes, bags, etc. It was really impressive. BUT I also don't think it's a 10/10 game because, while the story didn't have a lot of flaws, the ones they do have are really important for the player's experience. PS: I avoided all spoilers and biased reviews until I finished the game to not form an opinion that wasn't my own. I also study film, so I also understand the perspective and intentions behind the screen.

Let's start with what people are the angriest about. Joel's death. When it happened, I was in denial until I saw his grave. But honestly, through a storytelling point of view, it makes sense to put this as the driving force for Ellie's new adventure. The game does NOT lose the Joel and Ellie dynamic since we get flashbacks and answers that we had from the ending of Part I. Do I think there could have been other alternatives to his death? Sure. Joel could have been kidnapped or Tommy could have been the one to get killed, but it wouldn't have had as much impact for the player. It would've just felt like another mission, an objective. It wouldn't have felt personal. While his death wasn't heroic like a lot of people wanted it to be, it's completely realistic. Joel killed a lot of innocent people for selfish reasons, there was bound to be consequences.

For me, the biggest flaw of the game is the unbalanced change of perspectives. While we switch between Ellie and Abby in the first hours of the game, that stops after Joel's death and I think that was a terrible choice. Giving us like ten hours of Abby (a dislikable character until we meet Yara and Lev) all of the sudden is really overwhelming. If we had switched in between Ellie and Abby throughout the whole game, it would have definitely been a much more enjoyable experience, not to mention the routes for Abby are extremely long and should have been cut short. I also felt that a lot of Owen's parts were unnecessary, they don't really add something meaningful to Abby's story and he comes off as a really plain guy. I would have rather spent more time with Yara and Lev.

I really loved the new secondary characters and their backgrounds, Dina, Jessie, Yara and Lev. I don't believe there was anything political about it. A lot of people (mostly conservative white people) think that showing two girls kissing, a Jewish girl, a trans men and many characters of color is something worth being upset about. Please learn to listen to EVERYONE's stories, don't hate others because you've never been through their experiences and because they don't reflect who you are. You gotta be empathetic and open up your mind to what happens outside of first world countries. These minorities do exist, but they are finally getting some decent visibility. Human lives are not politics.

The game also gave me a lot of time to reflect about how revenge can drive people insane to the point where they give up everything that mattered to them. After Ellie leaves Dina and JJ by the end of the game, all she does is have a pathetic fight with a weak Abby and she realizes just that. Killing Abby wouldn't give her peace or Joel back. Ellie just had to learn how to grief for Joel and that's why she finally broke down once the fight was over. Unfortunately, her selfish decision had left her alone. I really appreciated and loved the symbolism with the guitar Joel gifted Ellie. Leaving the guitar behind was like moving forward from Joel's death instead of not dealing with your feelings. While it's obviously upsetting Ellie can't play like she used to, I do think it's possible for her to learn how to play the guitar again like a left-handed person would, a new beginning.

It's also crazy how in a zombie apocalypse people are killing each other instead of working together to stop the spread of the virus. It reminded me of the pandemic we're all living in right now. It's not that hard to wear a mask, to wash your hands, to social distance and stay home, but a lot of people don't just because they don't want to.

The greatest disease is humans' selfishness.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
