If I had to choose a word to describe the storyline, it would be “condescending.” Time and again the game forces the storywriter’s values down the player’s throat. Time and again the game sends the players on a guilt trip for what the game forced them to do without giving them a second option. It’s like the game is telling us that what we feel is wrong despite it’s the game itself that made us feel that way.

The reason The Last of Us Part I was so well-received was because no one could say who among the characters was in the wrong or who was in the right. It was that excellent ambiguity between good and evil that intrigued the players. Some would think Joel did the right thing; some would say what Joel did was selfish. The Last of Us Part II, however, took this intricate and delicately woven storyline and changed it into brute, insensitive propaganda that constantly tries to “enlighten” the players. Before, there was no right and wrong answers; now, Neil Druckmann’s answer is the right answer and the game doesn’t even try to hide that. He mistakes himself for sitting on the moral high ground and thinks the players need to be educated. Naughty Dog should stay in its lane of a game company instead of being political, and stop trying to lecture the society of being kind to others when it can’t even care for its own employees to the extent that 70% of them in a department left before the release of the game.

For those whose heart is filled with love and compassion, this game is a sweet journey. But for those typical bigots, who prone to hate than love, always one-way thinking and don't bother to put in someone else’s shoes, this game is a disaster. So please haters, leave TLOU2 alone.

This is an amazing story wrapped in a video game. For those of us who laud games as pieces of literature, this game is a must. I’m heartened to see that the majority of user reviews are positive. When we look back, say 10 years from now, many will begrudgingly admit that this game is a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm saying this as someone that pre-ordered the game, played it, finished it, and never touched it again. Lets get the good out of the way first, because this game has a lot more bad that it should and its a shame. 1. The graphics are some of the prettiest I've seen on the PS4. I have the first release of the console and the game still manages to run extremely well. 2. The gunplay is great. I enjoyed the gunplay in the first game, it having more weight than any third person shooter at the time. 3. The music. Gustavo Santaollala has always done a great job with the Last of Us series. From the disturbing and mysterious opening song of the first game to the soundtrack that plays while travelling Seattle. The music in this game is a must listen if you have the time and desire to. Now let's get on to the bad, and I'll be here for a while. Again, lets get the obvious out the way, the story. Where do I begin? Joel having his skull under par 2 hours into the game? The bland and uninteresting side characters that go along with Ellie and Abby? Abby's half of the plot being flawed and extremely boring? All of these being major problems with this game. Joel was an extremely beloved and cared for character in the first game, but in this, he is used as motivation in the plot and is in the rest of the game via flashbacks. A great and compelling story is driven off of the actions of a character. In this game, the characters are driven off of the story. Abby is the protagonist of the B plot. She is part of a group called the W.L.F. The Washington Liberation Force. Her half of the story consists of side missions and tedious quests for the conclusion of finding Ellie and almost beating her to death. She is such a shallow and terribly written character. Her motivations consist of: finding her ex in a renovated aquarium, then taking it up the ass. Helping a Seraphite girl get her arm cut off to save her, then having the same girl die of getting shot brutally. Then, taking a shemale to California to find the remaining group of Fireflies. Pacing is a super important part of any story, from slow dramatic pauses made to make the audience feel tense, like in Inglorious Basterds, to the fast paced story made to try to grab all the information as quick as possible, like Baby Driver. This simple thing can turn a game from super boring to super interesting. Ellie's part of the story is decent. Being the start of the game, the A plot, this is where a bunch of features need to be introduced. Ellie's story is mostly about the revenge plot of TLOU 2. This is where you have characters like Dina and Jesse. Jesse is so forgettable I had to google who the hell he was. He was a fling of Dina's. They were a thing, broke up, then Dina started dating Ellie. When Dina was dating Jesse, he made her pregnant, thus causing that plot. Ellie's camp is in a theater which funnily enough, the play that was supposed to be going on is on my birthday. That's not a complaint, I just thought it was cool. This is the half of the game where you can kill the pooches. Neil said that you were supposed to feel something every-time you killed a dog or it's owner, but I didn't feel anything. I don't know if it was because I'm a cold hearted bastard or it wasn't compelling enough, but there wasn't any emotional reality in those optional sections. The ending is incredibly disappointing. From the low stakes ending to the downer epilogue, it just was not as good as the last game's ending. Ellie loses two fingers in the fight, losing her only connection to Joel, being able to play the guitar. Except she didn't because of she is talented enough in music, she can learn to play it left handed. Overall, the game's story was terrible and it deserves a lower rating than what the paid off critics gave it. Overall, 3/10. Expand

Although the toxic fans will disagree, this game is poorly written. Very lazy writing has no place in a AAA title and god forbid if an indie game were to follow in this games footsteps it would be slated by everyone. However, when you have a team who have pumped out amazing games before it, each with its own brilliant plot line and interactions, and then this festering turd is served up, it leaves a sour taste in the players mouth.

    Pros:

    - Graphics are beautiful, Naughty Dog show their true strengths in creating an amazing and unique environment
    - The story starts off strong
    - Little details help keep the player immersed in the world

    Cons:

    - Whatever strength the start of the game creates is immediately destroyed, not by the death of a beloved character, but by the introduction of a character which the player is forced to relate to
    - Poor writing unfortunately creates many plot holes which leaves players wondering just how on earth they all slipped past the whole team
    - Bugs. Oh my lord the bugs, I don't know whether I personally was unlucky to find so many bugs or if the game was filled to the brim with them but the amount of times the game decides to become a mess was laughable
    - Poor character development. A bunch of nobodies which no one cares about, an awkward sex scene which I'm unsure as to why it was included? (unless it's a main plot device, there's no point in having a scene in a game like that, keep it in your pants developers) and the poor treatment of both protagonists
    - She hulk. This is more of a personal thing and as such won't affect the rating, but christ. I have done my fair share of bodybuilding and if I could have She Hulks muscles by surviving off of scraps of food and probably no protein shakes, I'd be cutting down on supps. Granted she is made skinnier after certain events, but during an apocalypse, every one would be lean as hell unless they had access to Willy Wonkas chocolate factory.

Conclusion A game many of us have waited for us since the brilliant end of tlou's dlc has been a massive letdown. I'll hold on hope for some phenomenal dlc but the vanilla game? No thanks, I'll stick to stabbing myself with a knife, it's less painful.

Even though The Last of Us Part II relishes in making players uncomfortable and reminding them characters can lose everything at a moment’s notice, those bleak traits are part of the game’s appeal even if the charm’s a morbid one.

I'd be hard pressed to think of a game featuring a story as engaging and masterfully told. It tells a harsh tale of grief, revenge and moral ambiguity in a post apocalyptic world rife with chaos and violence. Harsh but not dark, as there is beauty throughout the game, in how the protagonists care about their friends, interact with each other, relive fond memories and reflect on themselves when they are not busy dispatching their ennemies.

The Last of Us Part II is also technically flawless, with beautiful exterior environments and top notch exploration and combat.

But this game really shines in depicting characters with real depth and complexity. And, oh boy, it really succeeds in making the case that there are two sides to a story.

No game is perfect, but this one arguably comes darn close. I also give it a 10 to counteract the biggots who chose to bomb this game, either because they can't stomach how the plot unfolds or because they have issues with its inclusive storyline.

Only reason why I’m giving it 1/10 is because of how good the first game was, gorgeous graphics and ‘ok’ combat. **** happens. Sometimes people you love die and oftentimes it's in the most inglorious ways. Sometimes you fall off some random ladder or get stabbed by some random mook you don't even know. This game is REAL. Revenge is cliche, but guess what? That **** happens in life and no matter how cliche it is it doesn't stop happening. "Revenge is bad". That **** happens in life and no matter how cliche it is it doesn't stop happening. "Revenge is bad". People say that's an obvious point, but apparently it's not because it happens every damn day. How long has it been since someone flipped you the bird while you're driving down the road, a week? Is that cliche? **** yes but it still happens. So the least you can do is ask why it happens over and over day after day and on every damn reddit I've seen in the past week.

What we can gain from games isn't a more sophisticated palette or recognition of our tirelessly exercised skill. We gain experience which influences how we behave and thought for how we can better live our lives. You don't get that from what you want to see. So quit your whining and LOOK for what you can gain from this experience.

The game is brilliant and bold. The people that didn't like the game didn't understand the message or didn't give it a straight shot, like for example if you didn't let game explain Abby's side it's and say her story is boring and you can;t relate to her, then you clearly didn't understand the message. The story is about both Abby and Ellie had their motivation to act as they did just like in any war there is not a good or bad side the same thing is here. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright have seeing all the massive negativity thrown this games way, especially on the DAY of the launch, I was expecting to a moderate level of story structure with character development and story arcs to be about the same if not worse. I was surprisingly wrong and not that shocked at the massive amount of negativity thrown toward this games direction. It's on par with the DMC: Devil May Cry game, when that came out a lot of people were just hating on the game and blasting it online. Now onto the giant elephant in the room with this game, Joel's death. That seemed to solidify a lot of peoples hatred for this from the get go which, again, I can understand why they were made but I don't understand why they couldn't look past their anger. This game is very much different in it's story telling then any game I can think of, it feels more a kin to an actual novel then your standard story in a game and that I think is fantastic. It shows Naughty Dog is willing to elevate and evolve the way we tell stories in games which is something that has to change. Many games now-a-days fall victim to the obvious flow and point system. For example, whens the last time you played a game when you were in your enemies shoes? When's the last time you played a game where you were running around and gunning down the people shooting at you then next minute you are seeing their actual day to day operations and camps that have men, women, and children just doing their best to survive a horrible situation. Now that's not to say all you get are sunshine and rainbows on the other end, you do see their darker sides, like the toture and suffering they were inflicting on the captured Seraphites. Or their real lack of compassion toward anyone that is not fully with them, that's an encompassing story. There's an author, Sherillyn Kenyon, who has done this exact thing with certain characters in her stories, not afraid of showing them at their lowest points and their highest. To me this game elevated from where the original took off and just kept reaching for higher aspirations.

If you REALLY feel the story was bad, that's fine. But if your only major complaint is that Joel is dead and you have to play as his murderer and understand her side of the story. Then your opinion doesn't matter because what Naughty Dog did here was great and it should be respected as such.
