If you are looking for an immersive, gripping story with memorable, deep characters that undergo significant character development which reflects their personality traits. Combining all these aspects together to make them feel real and alive. Well... avoid this game at all costs.

Whereas in the last of us 1, you had all those things. It was the biggest strength and draw for the game.

Characters that felt real, and reacted to their situations as their personality dictates. A constant struggle between survival, and finding joy, a reason to live. It was especially apparent between adults and children. In TLOU2 every character is dead inside already, their bodies just haven't stopped moving yet. They are so flat that you could replace everyone with anything else and the story wouldn't be affected at all. So forgetful, so meaningless the entire way through, and I'm not talking about the "main story arc" everyone is raging about. It's like this the whole damn game.

Even if you completely remove the story, the characters, etc. from the equation the game is still mediocre at best. The combat is sooo boring and clunky just like the first game. it's just expanded on a little in TLOU2 but it plays the same. Also, the incredibly tedious and un-needed push dumpsters/ladders around is still in the game! There is so much useless filler in this game, and not the fun exploration/discovery type like in zelda, witcher, or other similarly open-world exploration games. One of my friends literally dozed off on the couch while exploring some ruined buildings at one point.

The only saving grace of this game is the art direction and the graphical fidelity. The art departments did an incredible job! The world looks truly breathtaking, the animations are incredible, dynamic, and incredibly varied. Have you seen the mud?! It looks SO real when you walk and slide through it.

I really feel for those in the art departments that worked so passionately on this project, only to be associated with all the other downfalls of TLOU2.

So ultimately I give this game a 3.5/10, purely because of how much incredible work the art team did. Without that, I'd give it a 2/10 simply because the game seems stable.

When you make a linear story-driven game more akin to an interactable movie than a game, you better have an incredible story and immersively real characters to make it a successful title.

So before writing this review I wanted to take my time, digest & think about the whole thing. I did not want to rush in and review this in the heat of the moment out of the fear of acting on impulse and giving a biased score. I'm going to try and be as objective as possible, so buckle up for the ride.

Let's start on a positive note:
The game definitely does not deserve anything below a 6/10 or 6.5/10 however bad you may think it is. The improvements over the first game are very noticeable not only graphics-wise but also from a gameplay and audio standpoint.
The graphics are probably the first thing you'll notice when booting the game up. Naughty Dog always delivers top-notch graphics for however long they've been releasing games on Sony's consoles. They are top dogs (pun intended) in the industry along with very few others such as Rockstar when it comes to attention to detail, illumination, effects, droplets of rain on character's skin, the tracks you leave behind in the snow and everything else that makes games visually pornographic.
The gameplay: chef's kiss; the animations are smooth, transitions blend in so seamlessly when you're changing direction, walking, jogging, sprinting, jumping, crawling, shooting, reloading, diving, swimming or swinging. I simply have no words to describe how good the gameplay actually is and the game should be played at least once for this reason alone! it really is THAT good.
The music is also on par with the first game. Gustavo Santaolalla's magic... Nothing less of excellent. The tunes for this game contribute so much to the atmosphere whether you're in a cutscene, in combat or exploring. The gameplay audio, ranging from the sounds of the guns shooting, breaking glass, walking on snow or stepping in puddles to hearing that blood gushing out when you slice someone's neck with the switchblade. The voice actors also did more than an outstanding job.
In short this is a very polished game and you can see that the delays have been put to good use. Trying to find faults from a technical aspect, (not that they don't exist) is, most of the time, almost like trying to find the needle in the haystack.
Something that I noticed that wasn't as perfect was the A.I. The enemies are now so much more intelligent, they try to flank you in numbers, they check their angles and occasionally watch their back to see if someone is sneaking up on them. The only flaw I noticed is the friendly A.I.: they will act like sitting ducks sometimes and sometimes they sprint right into the face of the enemies while they are screaming: "Where did they go?!" and that is a bit immersion breaking... After beating the game on Survivor (hardest difficulty at the point of me writing this) I can truly say that the A.I has improved by a lot, even though there is still way to go.
During my gameplay I did not use Listen Mode as it would, in my eyes, make the game too casual to play. I won't judge/rate this feature.
There are enough infected battles, some new types as well that have their own "special abilities" and all the returning infected have been overhauled and improved upon: Runners are so much more aggressive now, Stalkers are more terrifying than ever etc. Dogs are also a new addition and bring out new ways on how the player decides to approach certain situations.

I would like to delve deeper into some of the things I mentioned but I also have to dedicate some words to what I didn't fully like, the thing that brings this game down to a 7/10 (at least at this point of me writing this review). The goddamn story, yes. You know this moment was coming. Actually not the whole story, but a big chunk of it that would take the score down by so much. If you haven't played the game yet, proceed with caution, some MAJOR SPOILERS be lurking ahead. Here we go:

First off, let me say that Joel dying isn't the problem... It's the way Joel died, the way he went and how we reached that moment was so out-of-character and more than disrespectful towards the protagonist of the first game. People find all sorts of excuses but sorry, I don't buy any of them.
Getting over that tragic moment is all fine and dandy, until about half-way through the game when the game flashbacks after a major cliffhanger. After that you are forced to play as Abby (Joel's killer) who is the daughter of the surgeon that was supposed to operate on Ellie and which Joel killed in the first game. ND tried to shove her ~15 hours long backstory down our throat and make us like/empathize with a character who we despised literally a couple hours in the game. Just no.
The ending is even more underwhelming, after failing to get revenge the first time, after killing hundreds, the death of Joel, other characters & including losing her friends before reaching this point Ellie decides last second not to kill the person who wronged her.

P.S.: The multiplayer i loved in Part 1 won't be out for who knows how long. Big L in my eyes.

These are absolutely agenda filled reviews. I've been playing for 20 hrs and I'm loving it. I love the conflicted characters and choices. True it doesn't feel like absolutely new game but legit successor and continuation of TLOU1. Abby's escape sequence in the first 2 hrs of the game is what we play games for.

If you like or are like me a Hugh fan of The Last of Us you need to play this game. There’s a few quality of life updates to the game mechanics. Graphics are a lot better than TLOU remastered. If you play on PS5 graphics look much better & are on par to the PS5 version of TLOU Part 1. I played them back to back & they look virtually identical on PS5. Load times for Part II are longer. The story gets review bombed by the hate parade & that’s unfortunate. There were rumors & hate groups came out in force but ignore that stuff. Living with hate makes you miserable, sucks the energy out of you. This game is super fun & the TLOU universe continues with an outstanding story. I think most people dislike the game because it’s not the game they would have written & it makes them feel angry. I’d argue in this case it’s just good storytelling (trying to avoid spoilers here). It’s not always going to work but I genuinely had my feeling change as the story progressed. Let’s be clear & state that at the end I 100% understood the story. I was emotionally confused which in this case is a good thing IMHO. I wasn’t sure if I was angry or felt complete. Was a bit confused as to who I was angry with. Do I have new friends & family or enemy’s. The story is clear but my feelings were stirred up. The story made me think about many things & look at the characters differently. If you loved Part 1 for the story & the emotions it make you feel this game do that & more. Play the game with an opened mind & you’ll have a fantastic ride. Expand

Not only does this game do that, but the purpose of the story doesn't even have a payoff with the most lackluster and disappointing ending in recent memory. Pointless sequel, identity politics constantly shoved down your throat, overall depressing and gross tone. The flashbacks are probably the only decent part of the game, but even those are rendered pointless due to the outcome of beloved characters.

Graphics and animations are good, but if you sprinkle sugar on a pile of **** newsflash, it's still ****

Not enough to make one of the protagonists a lesbian, but let’s continue to push it further. Make the bar owner a “homophobic” person because he says the establishment is family friendly; force the player to play as a genderless looking character, kill off the best character in the whole franchise (Joel) disrespectfully so...

Huge disappointment of a sequel. Could have been awesome if they’d have kept all the pandering and social justice messaging out of it and simply focused on what made the first so great — a father and daughter relationship, post-apocalyptic survival, tense atmosphere, and so on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine playing with Arhtur for most of RDR2, but at the end you switch up to Micah just to kill Arthur. John never pursues revenge because "it's bad". This is TLOU 2. The game tries to be profound when the story is just simplistic revenge, except you don't even exercise said revenge, you let the person who killed Joel and destroyed your hand go away because "revenge is bad". By the media reviews, you would expect this game would have a storytelling comparable to Watchmen's, except you get a script wrote by a kid.

Joel, the dude who mastered the ways of survival of this world, fell for the most stupid and plain trap in history. Joel would never fall for such a trap, they downgraded the past game character's intelligence.

The game doesn't do much to improve the combat of the first, the I.A is plain potatoes and it's clear that Druckmann tried to force his agenda in this game too. Neil is such a narcissist human being that he inserted himself into the game TWICE. He is the character spitting on Joel's corpse and later on he appears as a card with max intelligence as his main stat. As a person who loved the first one and was hoping to see Ellie grow as an individual, I am disappointed.

Just like in the first one, Ellie is accompanied by someone most of the time. Then you play as Senator Armstrong. Then revenge is bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing game overall. Insanely beautiful visuals of course, great voice acting and sound design. People seem to have issues with the story, i however really enjoyed it. Like many others, I despised Abby at first for what she did to Joel. But through playing her, I grew to enjoy her character. To the point where I didn't want Ellie to actually go after her and let it go. Great writing overall. The only real gripes that I have with this game is that the combat could feel clunky at times, especially during boss fights or when hordes of infected rush you. And the AI didn't feel that great, especially friendly AI when you ended up in combat, or when you wanted to silently take down enemies alongside the friendly AI, which is done in more scripted sequences. The graphics, good, the sound, good, the gameplay, good, the story, lazy, bad it's not enough, the two main girls find a pride flag intact in a zone that its been ravaged by the weather and such, one asks the other, what's up with all the rainbow flags (the flags in most part are color perfect and in one piece and just out of the washing machine...) and the main character answers, i dunno... WTF, that's one example of really poor writing, other, you expect us to sympathize with a character that not only betrays in the most coward way someone that just save her life because he killed her parents that were circus doctors? It literally is like a massive middle finger to anyone who loved and related to Joel and loved the first game. Literally the worst sequel of all time and the WORST EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD WHILE PLAYING A VIDEO GAME!!!

Shame because the graphics are the best ever in a video game (though the amount of film grain is the worse I've ever seen, honestly), some of the best music and sound design ever, and amazing gameplay. My one complaint about the gameplay is the controls/aiming is no where near as good as the first game. There's something off about it that can't even be explained by the framerate being half TLOU:R

But anyways, unless you want to really know how terrible this game is, don't even think about playing it. I NEVER sell games, but for this one I have to even though I bet encounter mode would probably be fun, it's just not worth $60 IMO
