Firstly, the game progressively and completely breaks my heart.
Secondly, the Used Game Shop refused to buy my copy of TLOU2. The game play is OK, the story is trasher than trash.

The one point is for the art and programming team. The plot just completely **** on top of the hard work of the rest of the project. Stop trying to beat your idea into players’ head and destroying the plot while you are doing it.

This game simply looks and sounds incredible and as an RPG lover, the first few scenes just make you stop, look around and rejoice at how lucky we are to have games that can look and feel like this.

The playing style picks up pretty much where it left off with the benefit of jumping, swimming and crawling for all characters. The jumping and falling can feel a little clunky if i'm being picky, the swimming works well although perhaps could have been utilised more. The crawling/proning is the best of the new skills and as a stealth type player really enjoyed the benefits and options this added to my playing style.

The scavenging and artifacts are exactly the same, if you're into it, great, if not, you can bypass most of it. I guess there is only so much you can do here, so not too bothered by the lack of development.

I was disappointed with changes made with player and weapon upgrades. The player upgrade system is muddled and frankly becomes a mute point to the game. Your upgrades just don't become noticeable or of any real value, especially compared to the amount of work and exploring it takes to build up enough resources. I felt like could have completed the game on Hard setting without any player upgrades making the whole point of it redundant.

Weapon upgrades again i felt didn't really offer too much given the amount that needs to be scavenged. It was less muddled than player upgrades but felt the new swanky visuals of upgrading your weapons was the best part.....which says a lot.

The situations/ scenarios you find yourself in can be hit and miss. Some I really enjoyed, some seemed under or over developed.  Massive open spaces with literally nothing to do or too regularly were just used and some kind of ambling dialect storyline type section to avoid excessive cut scenes. Then you'd be swept into a sudden stronghold of infected or factions. Then you'd be back to another cut scene or dropped into a completely different character/timeline altogether. It all felt very inconsistent.

So for me the technical side was amazing but the playthrough was too jumbled.

Then there is the storyline. In my opinion, its biggest downfall. I was initially fully engaged with the game, mouth open and slightly traumatised by Joel's sudden departure. It was a shock and awe approach of which I was gutted, but thought they'd bring us back in line with some timeline and character (Ellie & Joel) swapping.  What we got was 3/4 of the game completely detached from the two very players and relationship you fell in love with during part 1.

As much as the game was a spectacle to play for the most part, I just didn't want to be playing it!  The best way I can describe the feeling of sheer disappointment is that I could only have really enjoyed this game if i had never played part 1.

Joel is tossed from the game, cast aside to make way for new characters, his role in the game is literally reduced to cut scenes. Ellie gets very little character development other than a bitter protagonist on a revenge rampage. She still ends up with everyone she loves either being killed or leaving her, which just leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Although you play as Ellie I still felt, like Joel, her best bits all come from cutscenes. Their relationship was just used as toilet paper for the rest of the new adventures. There really is nothing else I can say. They completely messed this dynamic up. It's very sad.

For me, this made any viable buy-in to Abby and her narrative completely tarnished. I was only able to enjoy Abby's storyline in small pockets, ruined by either the jumping around of timelines or by the return of the disappointment I felt at how much they were messing this game up.
Abby's storyline really should have been a DLC and seperate story, much like we got in part 1. You could have engaged with it better, as you'd be prepared to work through it from the other side of the storyline. It was topical, relevant and groundbreaking but ultimately underwhelming because your heart wasn't in it.

Abby and Lev essentially become what Joel and Ellie were in part 1 only with a less stereotyped set up. Personally I think the poor handling of Ellie and Joel completely distracts you from the new storyline and characters.  It should have been something profound but they end up missing that target too. You let Abby get killed, fall off ledges, want her to fail, all because you haven't waited 7 years to play the person who tortured and killed Joel. It just didn't work.

I can't get over how much they let go of the gold dust they created in part 1. It could and should have been so much better.

So my heart wants to bomb the rating as it misses so much. But take away the  emotional attachment from part 1 and it is a stunning looking, dark game with some barrier breaking, brilliant sections.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay mechanics are decent, nothing spectacular. Shooting mechanics are way improved and stealth is awesome. Graphics alone are breathtaking and game changing and ND out did themselves on this one. However, when I buy a story based game it’s because I want the immersive experience of being involved with a story that I can connect with and fall in love with. TLOU part 1 did this and I went in with the belief that part 2 would be the love letter to fans, as a sequel should be. I was wrong and sorely mistaken. The story is contrived and retcons characters that were previously beloved to push a social agenda. TLOU2 kills off Joel within the first couple hours and expects us to sympathize with the killer Abby who is basically a sociopath and full of hate. It tries to tell us that Ellie’s path of destruction created by Joel’s death will only perpetuate more destruction. Whereas the revenge narrative of Abby is justified because Joel killed Abbys dad and Abby is a good person. She’s not. She relishes in other people’s deaths and feels no remorse. . Echo chamber bs, I love video games and love ones that are rich in culture and personality. This is not that. It’s something else entirely... u can’t go 5 minutes with sexuality being forced down your throat. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game deconstructs every positive about the first games story. The story is shallow and in satisfying. It has killed my desire for any sequels. I would have prefered they not made a sequel. TLOU2 would have been much better off telling us a story of a new cast of characters rather than using joel and ellie. The story feels as though it was made and the characters were forced to act it out as opposed to being an organic view of how these characters would react i given a certain conflict. It feels as though this story was made about someone else, somewhere else but they used the same characters to get sales up Expand

Well, what a disaster! If you even like the characters or story in the first game avoid this game at all costs! Consider this "part 2" game a fan-fiction or spinoff. forget this game it's for your own good.

if you don't care about the first game, this game is nothing special in terms of graphics or music or gameplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to give this game a positive review. When the leaks dropped and everyone was bashing it, I thought to myself, "It's Naughty Dog, they have a great track record. There's no way they messed up that bad". Boy was I wrong.

First off, visually, this game is beautiful. ND really gave it their all to make this world feel alive. Every NPC and dog you kill has a name and they do a great job at making you feel bad for killing these NPCs.

The gameplay gets very old and tedious. It's the same stealth focused, cover shooter from the original game. Some slight refinements, but nothing revolutionary. There were points where I was just sick of going through same room of infected over and over again. I just wanted to get to the next cutscene. The best fight encounters in the entire game for me were where the WLF and the infected were together. I had a blast setting off the Clickers and watching the two groups tear each other apart while I watched with glee. Besides that, the gameplay struggled to keep me entertained.

The story and pacing is where the game falls apart for me. Making us play as Abby for the second half of the game and get all her upgrades completely destroyed the game's pacing. ND spent the first 15 or so hours building up Ellie's story to its climax and and completely ruins it. I understand what ND was trying to do with the narrative, but I believe they could have definitely approached it better. They wanted us to relate with Abby and grow to like her, but made it impossible to do that after watching her beat a beloved character to death at the beginning of the game.

After awhile, I was just hate-playing the game. I had already sunk 18ish hours into the game, so I felt obligated to complete it. It wasn't a joy to play, I got sick of the gameplay loop rather quickly and the story was going a route which I didn't care for. I hope ND does better in their next title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a lot to be said both about this game and its stakeholders. It is indeed hypocritical for Neil Druckmann to claim that the game is intended to be divisive and yet cry afoul that people are not liking the game.

The game is to be praised for their amazing graphics and stunning environments, much like the previous game. However, the gameplay feels more repetitive and puzzles felt too simplistic. Moreover, much is to be said about the storytelling of the game.

The characters Joel and Tommy were reduced to a shell of their former selves. With almost 50 years of survival experience between themselves, it is uncharacteristic of Joel and Tommy to leave themselves vulnerable to strangers. At the start of the outbreak, Joel and Tommy leave a family with children on the roadside despite having room in their vehicle, showing how extremely cautious they are despite not knowing what's happening. Also, compare this with Joel's encounter with the "injured" Hunter in Pittsburgh, where he correctly assumed that the Hunter was faking his injury in order to ambush them. Living in settlements would not have reduced this caution. Maria almost shot her brother-in-law, despite Joel and Ellie claiming to not be a threat, only to be stopped by Tommy verifying Joel's identity. This plot hole could be seen as lazy storywriting, allowing the player to handwave Joel's reduced caution for plot.

The death of Joel is where the fanbase diverges. One side praises the game's dedication to subvert any expectations, another side laments the use of Joel's death being reduced for simple shock value. Contrast this with the use of Sarah's death in order to paint what kind of father and uncle characters Joel and Tommy are. How they are willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect those that they love.

As you continue from shock and anger from Joel's death, you start to sympathize with Ellie's quest for revenge, sharing her hatred and desire to avenge the death of Joel. The entire Ellie's arc makes you build up bloodlust for Abby's death. When the game tosses you into Abby's arc, now you're confused why you're playing as the "villain" of the story. At some points of the game, you "carelessly" let Abby die to appease that anger. Despite the game continuing to paint Abby in a positive light, the game fails to make me empathize with her character. The entire time I'm playing as her makes me want to go back to Ellie's story. When the game finally reveals that the surgeon killed by Joel was Abby's dad, I could not empathize with him even more. To see that the surgeon was more than willing to sacrifice another person's daughter, especially having a daughter of his own, it shows that if left in that scenario, he would also sacrifice Abby for the "greater good".

I felt that the the game should've ended with Ellie and JJ sitting at the farm, with both sides having lost and no clear winners. However, the third arc of relaunching Ellie's vengeance against Abby felt very unnecessary extension of the game in order to increase its runtime.

How would the game have been better told? I feel that if they started with Abby's arc first. Telling the narrative from Abby's perspective first would have garnered all the player's sympathy for her, especially after establishing that her father is an important character that was brutally murdered by a psychopath (whilst hiding the fact that the psychopath was indeed Joel). They could narrate that the killer's name was "Miller" and, while not revealing that it was Joel, allow the player to kill him without realizing it's Joel (they could make him look even scruffier or more rugged). This sets in the player's mind that they finally gave Abby's dad justice and has avenged his death.

Upon switching the game to Joel's arc, this arc will culminate with in his eventual death. However, the player has come to the realization of the horror that they ended up killing him in the earlier arc. The players justify that there are no good guys or bad guys in this world, they are only each good guys in their own perspective.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't usually write reviews for games, but I feel obligated to set the record straight for a sequel to a game I loved. This game was an absolute pain to get through. The graphics are impressive, but the gameplay is a total slog. The story is where it gets really bad, though. Ellie's section plays out like a teen drama. There're hints of a love triangle and the cliché teen pregnancy to force in some suspense. None of the characters from her half are truly likable but are at least somewhat nice to deal with. At the end of Ellie's half, we cut back to the beginning of the game to play as Abby; which just felt exhausting. The whole Abby playthrough, they tried to force reasons to like her down our throats. Literally everything they did just felt awful and tiring. The first thing Abby does when you're introduced to her is save a zebra. Everything is just so obvious, it's horrible storytelling. All said, this was a terrible game to play through, and I think I hate it so much because of how good it could've been. Expand
