The only thing that I really care about in a game is the story, The Last of Us Part II failed miserably in that front.
The only reason this game gets even a 4 is for the graphics, level design, sound design, and score. If you care about the plot, relatable characters, and a good ending, this game is not for you.

In a game where 90% of your experience comes from the plot, it is really not advised to have a bad story. Especially not wise to make the characters do unreasonable things when you had epic arcs and deep chemistry between them in the first part. This game is not fun. This feels like taking the trash out. Chore not game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So first off I have played through the whole game since I have a New Zealand account and there the game releases earlier. And the graphics are stunning. But I play the last of us for the story and this is where my problem with this game is. I could have given it a 0 and say everything about this game is trash but it clearly doesnt deserve a 0 because it does have some good moments like the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie. But the entire second half and the (in my opinion) **** revenge plot make this game really hard to recommend for me. If you play games for the graphics go ahead but if you want a good story this game is not what you are looking for. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've rated this 3/10 mainly for the story. The graphics are honestly absolutely amazing and one of the best I've seen from any video game. Damn. Really good. The gameplay is an improvement on the first one, but in my eyes it's mostly filler in-between the story telling. It plays very well though and does its job. But, this game is mainly about its story and why I so dearly loved the amazing first game. And the story of Part 2 is absolutely terrible, even nonsensical.

I'll start at the beginning and work my way through the story. Obviously major spoilers here. So as we know from the first game, Joel is in deep water with the Fireflies. And as we've seen from the first game, Joel is a very cautious un-trusting man. For an example, a survivor is hurt on the road in the first game but its actually an ambush, Joel knows this and just speeds his car up to run them over and get away. So we know what kind of person Joel is.

So at the beginning of the game, Abby is looking for and ends up finding Joel and his brother Tommy. Joel even SAVES Abby's life here. Does this change Abby wanting to kill Joel at all? Even second guess? No. Joel literally saves her life, and instead of something interesting going on and Abby being juggling this guilt around and thinking about still killing Joel- nope. She doesn't care that that happened at all.. okay. Sure. Boring, but sure. So Abby ends up taking Joel to her friends, and Abby ends up torturing and killing him for thanks for saving her life. Cool. The problem with this is, the scene leading up to this doesn't make any sense.

So we know Joel is a cautious man who knows that he is in a lot of trouble with other people. Right? Yet.. he's shown to be so ridiculously trusting here that these people may as well be his childhood friends or even family. It's so unbelievable for him that you can only think this even happened BECAUSE the story needed it to, not what the characters would do. Joel follows Abby and her friends inside the house, who proceed to lock the door behind him and start to crowd around him. Joel tells them his name and him and Tommy told Abby his name earlier. So Joel is just following this girl he's never met before into a house of all of her friends, who proceed to lock the door behind him and crowd around him. And he's just.. doesn't react at all, like its normal. What?

Then, another nonsensical thing is Ellie comes to his rescue. Opens the door in the house to see Abby beating Joel to death. Ellie has a gun in her hand. She's standing outside the door and watching this happen. Does she shoot right then and there? No. She rushes inside to get tackled to the ground and that scene plays out. Really? Have these characters all lost their brains?? What is going on here? It doesn't make sense and it's not what these characters would do.

I don't have enough words so I'll have to come to my next biggest gripe. This story just plays out and does things that make no sense at all, and characters do things they wouldn't do just so Ellie can feel sad. One big example I have here is Mel.

Ellie kills people left and right, literally kills a dog ten seconds earlier and calls it stupid, but once someone has a baby OH NO! She gets absolutely heart broken over killing, well, not really the person but just the baby. And they don't mention the baby at all previously? Not once? Like 'please don't kill me I have a baby'. No, the pregnant woman just tries to straight up fight Ellie and dies and THEN they reveal it of course. Cool. And in a later cutscene you can easily see how pregnant she is, she's literally looking 8 months pregnant and just about to give birth, seriously. Her belly is HUGE, but she 'hides' it when Ellie's killing her with a jacket like that somehow magically conceals it. Right. That, and their group actually wanted her to go out and do grunt work, patrol around and basically go to the 'front line' while being that pregnant. Abby even says she can get off the assignment if she asks but 'no, I don't want to sit around'. But.. you want to be around dangerous situations that could hurt your baby? Shooters, clickers? What if she takes a fall? What is this reasoning? And this pregnant woman (Mel) is mad about the way Abby killed Joel with the golf club, but during a flashback cutscene, Mel also wanted to kill Tommy and Ellie too to leave no witnesses.. what? Are you serious? What are these characters? And Dina before this is talking about being a burden while being pregnant, Ellie even saying she is, but Mel is just.. good? She's not a burden at all and no one cares?

Final point, Abby finds Ellie after she had killed Abby's friends, including pregnant girl. Abby is in a position to kill them, has killed for less, and killed Joel who killed her dad. So.. why.. doesn't she? She doesn't kill Ellie, let's her go free. Why?

They did not do these characters justice. They ruined them. Only play the first game, skip this one.

Gameplay is alright, though it does get tedious as the game progresses. Of course, the thing everyone cares about in a Last of Us sequel is the story. It's the only reason everyone fondly remembers the original.
Where to start? Perhaps the crux of the problem is the character development, or lack thereof. Joel in particular is embarrassingly bad. Gone is the rugged and experienced survivor of Part 1, replaced by a trusting idiot. A man who survived in the apocalypse for decades decides to tell an entire group of armed strangers his name right after he learns he is being hunted. I would say more, but there isn't much else, as Joel dies a mere two hours into the game.
His death is meaningless, rushed, and disrespectful to the character and the fans. To make such a beloved character die like a dog by a character introduced just moments ago is absurd. To make his death have no impact other than a lazy writing plot device to make Ellie hunt down Abby is insulting. To make him die this way so early in the game doesn't even give the player time to grieve for this icon of gaming.
What makes the whole thing worse are the flashbacks with Joel sprinkled throughout the game, some of the only well-written segments of the whole thing. However, a dampener on the experience is the slight inconvenience that Joel is dead, and none of these things matter.
Why couldn't these experiences have been the main game? Why did they go for such an overused revenge story?
And at the end, to cap off the horrible writing, Ellie decides to basically abandon her loved ones to pursue Abby. After fighting and slaughtering hundreds, after everything Ellie has done, and as Ellie has the opportunity to kill Abby at last...she has a flashback of Joel playing the guitar, which prompts Ellie to let Abby go.
This makes no sense. Joel was not a pacifistic person, far from it. Were the writers going for the "He wouldn't be happy with this" approach? What Joel wouldn't be happy with already happened. He wouldn't have wanted Ellie to abandon Dina, which she did, and he probably wouldn't have wanted Ellie to kill hundreds in the pursuit of revenge, which she also already did, but he would have no such qualms about killing Abby herself. Why would you abandon your goal after going so far?
Wouldn't a flashback of Joel make Ellie more angry and make her want to kill Joel's murderer more? In what world does it sedate her anger?
As Abby rides away, Ellie makes it back to the hideout that she and her loved ones had made their base to find it abandoned with no indication of where they went. Ellie tries to play the guitar left behind but finds herself unable to do so due to two of her fingers bitten off by Abby. The game ends, with Ellie left without her lover, without her friends, without her father figure, Joel, unable to even play the guitar, which Joel taught her to play, without anywhere to go, and without her revenge that the whole game was leading up too, meaning a large portion of the game was simply a waste of time.
You could say it was all for nothing.

First off, I don't necessarily believe this game belongs in the 0/10 - 1/10 range because in my opinion, both the graphics and music are so good that they single-handedly lift the rest of this game to a below average experience. The graphics are beautiful, we all know that, but the music is hauntingly introspective and really follows the policy "less is more." I really believe Gustavo Santaolalla deserves more credit, as this is some of his best work. period. That being said, THE STORY IN THIS GAME IS ONE OF THE WORST I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. Allow me to take you back to 2017, where I finally got my hands on the Last of Us Part 1. I had already seen the game on youtube, but I didn't care, because I didn't see all of it, and I had heard how good this game was, but I wasn't sure if having the game spoiled for me would lessen the impact of its story on me. Oh, how was I wrong. From the likable yet insane hobbit that was Bill, to the duo of brothers in Henry and Sam that just screamed "double trouble," to the fatherly redemption story arc that was not a new story, but one of the best written stories ever told. The Last of Us was about a broken man, who had his daughter taken from him in one of the most tragic, one fell swoop moments in video games period. This event caused a shift in his life to become the hardened, lonely smuggler we knew him to be, and it was about this same broken man learning to trust, learning to confront his greatest fear that he could have a family again. The hope of the world of the Last of Us has been sucked from it due to the outbreak, yet Ellie embodies what hope there is left, hope for the world, and hope for Joel. From the death of Sarah, to seeing Bill's reaction to Frank, to Henry and Sam's demise, all of these were designed to represent the brutal nature of the world. Yet this violence, these deaths were all used in different ways that made you feel different things, and both after the death of Sarah and of Henry and Sam, I had to set the controller down and sob, because it made me reflect on the personal tragedies of my own life and helped me relate to Joel, my favorite video game character period (well, Tied with Arthur Morgan, they're really similar in some ways lol). The death was used in ways that made you think, in ways that made you look at the Last of Us not as a video game, but as a story I could relate to. In this plot, the characters have all turned emo, the world is so intentionally bleak it is worse than the Metro series of games, and the violence, good Lord the violence is so overwhelming that instead of making me think, it just made me cringe. Yes, we all understand that Joel killed hundreds of Fireflies and Hunters in the original game, but that was due to his remembrance back to Sarah, and we were able to identify with his struggles. Here, Joel is reduced to an idiot who trusts everyone he sees, and the characters you grow to like, such as Tommy and Jesse, are killed off (well, at least Tommy survives) so suddenly and abruptly that I was LAUGHING in what was supposed to be one of the climaxes of the game. What I'm trying to say is that even though the goal of this game was supposed to make me think, it ended up desensitizing me to the violence that was going on because of how it killed characters off in such a comedic way, rather than with the weight that it did so in the first game. Ultimately, I am going to try and blot this game out of my memory and hold out hope that we can get a remaster of the original for PS5 and be done, no sequel, just the masterpiece that was the first game.
