This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The technical aspects of the gameplay, mechanics and graphics of TLOU2 are fantastic, and just like I had hoped. I love the scale and versatility of the level design in the combat encounters, and how you are able to use it to your advantage.

    10/10

In terms of storytelling, this game is all over the place. I like the overall plot, but the execution could (should) have been better, especially after what Naughty Dog did whit TLOU1.
Part 2 is in desperate need of editing, where length, phasing and momentum all leave room for improvement.
The game is too long. TLOU1 proved that you don’t need a 20+ hour game to tell a captivating story, and develop great characters you fall in love with. This issue could however be mitigate with better phasing and momentum. There were tons of emotional moments, both in-game and in cut scenes, that made me feel everything from happiness to rage and loss. But there were also big sections of the game, where I felt frustrated by the downtime, and just wanted the next story-beat or more enemies to fight. It is here the level design becomes a double-edged sword.
When there is no one to fight or no puzzle to figure solve, the levels turn into big empty places where you walk around searching for scraps, ammo and pills, to make sure you are prepared for your next encounter. Even though Naughty Dog has made an amazing and beautiful world full of small details, this does become tedious after a while, when you are traveling through the world alone.
This breaks the phasing of the game, and takes away the focus from the story, which I through multiple playthroughs of TLOU1 never struggled with. In TLOU1 you are always experiencing the game, either through dialogue, puzzles or a cut scene/transition that throws you into a new scenario.
Maybe this becomes less of an issue on a second playthrough, but for now, it is one of my biggest negatives. If you experience the same thing, I recommend turning on enhanced listening to scan for items. This helps, without becoming a solution.
One of my favorite elements of both TLOU games is the in game dialogue between you and you companion. This could have been a solution for these sections, as it is the case for the Downtown level of Seattle Day 1, where Ellie and Dina are riding around joking and talking about what they see. The same goes for when you as Abby are making your way through the city with Lev, and they talk about the The Seraphites and why Lev and Yara are on the run. These are some of my favorite character development and world building moments, the same way how Joel says he has been on both sides of the ambush in TLOU1.
Another way Naughty Dog could have trimmed the game down is when you take over as Abby. It killed the momentum for me, because it felt like I was starting a new game. Even though it doesn’t make sense for you to upgrade Ellie’s abilities, I understand why it is there, as it gives the player a sense of progression. It is however 100% unnecessary when you play as Abby, a character who has trained for years to become a perfect killing machine. It feels like padding, and could have streamlined the story if you didn’t have to start from scratch. My solution to the Seattle levels with Abby is to give us a few skills to upgrade, and cut those chapters by 30%.

    6/10

Even though I miss a lot of Ellie’s personality from the first game, I get that she has grown, both in age and through life. There are a lot of characters to love and (love to) hate in this game, often even the same character simultaneously. The story does a good job of fleshing out the main characters motivations, and it made me both and hate and empathies with their acts and decisions.
The death of Joel made me hate Abby (as I was supposed to), but I did not get mad at the game, because I expected that the story would explain her actions, as it did. I like Abby as a character, and I liked playing as her.
I can easily imagine a full game where you play as a girl, whose father is about to save humanity, but is needlessly murdered by a madman, who acts out of selfishness. (Ellie even tells Joel that he did the wrong thing. He even knows this himself, which is why he lied about it at the end of TLOU1)
It is the reason why the games is called TLOU Part 2.

Whenever I hear people talk about negatives about TLOU1, they often mention the David fight, which is also my biggest negative about that game. But they did it again, only in an even more grotesquely annoying way. The showdown between Abby and Ellie in the theater is the only part of the game I hate, and I am not looking forward to play it again. It is luckily only one out of many scenes that are full of sweetness, love, heartbreak, horror and action, my favorite being the museum with Joel and Ellie.
The set pieces are impressive and really good at creating the right atmosphere the levels/chapters need to support the story.

    Final score 8.5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel like this game betrays the essence of the first last of us game wherein it was all about Joel and Ellie and how they would be able to survive the "apocalypse". This game completely screws over that narrative and turns it into a revenge plot that doesn't make sense. If we were to look back on the first 7 minutes of the original game, we can get a gist of what Joel's character is like when he left a family walking on the street in order to put his family first and the rest of the game was basically that Joel fighting to put his new family first. With this in mind, the scene leading up to Joel's death is disappointing to say the least. As it completely betrays Joel in the first game. Joel being the skeptic he was. Aside from the huge plot holes this game leaves. The game is also dull considering that this game was supposed to be about a zombie apocalypse and not a soap opera. To put it simply the game should be central to the apocalypse and not the revenge plot. If they wanted to put a revenge plot then it would be better if they had put it as a secondary plot point rather than the primary one. Because again this is a zombie apocalypse game.
The ending was also atrocious. This game is like kill bill if Beatrix Kiddo didn't kill bill. The ending would have been better if Abby was killed off in the end considering that Ellie already killed lots of people to get to her. I mean you have a lot of classic revenge movies and they always kill off the antagonist so then what reason do you not kill off Abby here. It's not as if they were like best friends once or some other dumb reason. Abby was by all means a character that everyone already hates considering that she killed and tortured Joel. Even when naughty dog where to make the player play as Abby to make them sympathize with her, the hatred is still there considering the player played the first game and spent most of their time playing as Joel and thinking like Joel and at the same time sympathizing with his decisions.
In any case this doesn't feel like a survival game anymore but just another zombie series that gets too political once they can't think of any another direction to take the series. Visuals are great gameplay wise it's good but a bit clunky sometimes and story is just the worse so that pretty much sums up the score and for the critics saying that is a masterpiece then I can honestly say they are right it's a masterpiece of every **** idea that came into a video game. The essence of video games is the fun that comes into it you basically take the fun out and it's not a video game anymore. This game is basically a boring movie that is at least 25 hours long.

It is spectacular and deserves to be considered a Masterpiece. So, I avoided the spoiler leak until I finished the game, but finally googled it to see what all the fuss was about. Reading what it was, I ended up laughing my a** off. To keep it vague and spoiler-free, the leak spoils a scene that happens very early in the game, informs you that you will play as another character besides Ellie, makes a claim/prediction that DOES NOT happen, and exposes very lightly of the theme of the story. Cheers to all the people that hate a 11hr story in cutscenes because of a very early-game scene. It is fair to say if you hate it, it is simply because you did NOT play it.

Anyway, rant over. Let us actually review the game. I do not want to include too many details because it is a wonderful experience and should not be spoiled. The story is amazing, and to be completely honest I felt more closure with The Last of Us now than I did 7 years ago. Just play the game and see for yourself.

Now for the gameplay, it is perhaps the most realistic and immersive video game I ever played. It is as detailed and visually beautiful as RDR2 or perhaps even better. I believe it is a huge step-up from the first one. It definitely adds a lot more variety, just the ability to prone alone adds a whole new experience to the game with abilities to hide better, crawl in long grass, crawl under tight spaces, shooting/throwing on your side/back, etc. Some of the level-designs for encounters are perhaps some of the best stealth playgrounds I have seen to date. To avoid spoiling the surprise, I would vaguely explain them based on my experiences. In any given encounter, you choose how you want to approach the situation whether it is stealth or guns n blazing. The AI is pretty aware and intelligent (on survivor mode at least), and their patrols are not so straightforward. They even look around in a very realistic manor rather than an AI that never checks over their own shoulder. Going back to list some examples of the playground: you can prone in long grass, cause distractions by throwing bottles/bricks or shatter glass on vehicles/buildings, place trap mines to bait enemies on your trail, lure runners/clickers into humans, climb structures to get the higher ground, swim in water to stealth through, etc… you get the point. There are some areas you even can prone in shallow water, not many games especially FPS games contain such a feature, you literally get to swim in 1ft deep water. You can obviously use it to your advantage to sneak around even more. The purpose of this list is to demonstrate just how much of a variety each encounter delivers. I died a lot on Survivor mode, and let me tell you, many of my last checkpoints played out so differently because of all the factors this game has. Overall, one can argue that the stealth may not be as in-depth compared to franchises such as Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid, but it is definitely in the conversation.

My favorite part of the game is easily the executions. I played 28+ hr and I still see new executions, you get a handful of different melee weapons, and can use them all in different actions to see other animations: sprinting and meleeing, sneaking and meleeing, dodging and meleeing, each one has a different animation-execution for each weapon…Bonkers! What also makes the game so fantastic is how beautiful it plays in its unscripted moments. TLoU2 perhaps has a few scripted areas, which are pretty intense. But the real beauty is during your encounters, watch any given clip on YouTube and you will be asking yourself if that sequence of actions were scripted or not. I cannot tell you how many times I was left in awe because of it.

Story: 10/10 (Emotional, dark, heavy, story with a fantastic theme)

Detail: 10/10 (I do not even know where to begin, blood tracking from your shoes after stepping in a puddle of blood, realistic character animations when navigating unscripted areas, you can even shine your flashlight in your companion’s face and they squint + look away. It is incredible detail)

Level-Design/Environments: 10/10 (Exploring areas can take you 5-45 min depending how you choose to play, creative enemy encounters)

Puzzles: 6/10 (Nothing challenging but some had me thinking for a few minutes, they do not compare to Uncharted/Tomb Raider/Zelda/etc puzzles. Mainly all revolve using a rope with some critical thinking)

Audio: 10/10 (Amazing soundtrack, realistic atmospheric sounds)

Replayability: 5/10 (Once you finish story mode on hardest difficulty and 100% there is nothing left to do for most players)

It is a shame for all the hate Naughty Dog is receiving for this game. Please finish the whole game first to see the whole story, and then rate it. The game is broken up in flashbacks throughout, seeing 2hr out of a 20+ hr does nobody justice.

The gameplay is very average in today's modern gaming generation. There are minor improvements from the first game and enemy AI is dumb as ever. There are more cut scenes and walking than actual gameplay.they destroyed all of your favorite characters. They dumb down Joel's character on purpose to make him weak and stupid. In the first game he was very smart and had a ton of experience. He didn't even trust a guy that was sick on the road. He chose to run him over. Later we find out that stranger on the road was not sick and it was all a set up. They do everything to make you dislike Joel and continue to spit on him. They have a trans female/male shoot him in the leg and torture him with a golf club right in the first 2 hours of the game. They spit on him literally. They made Ellie unlikable and a selfish human being. She kills everyone and continued to blame Joel for saving her life. She cared so much in saving humanity because she has the immunity but instead she became a lesbian and chose not to reproduce. Let that sink in. She even let's Abby the one that tortured and murdered Joel in front of her get away with it. Abby also bit off two of Ellie's fingers. Her letting Abby go is basically saying Joel deserved dying. A loveable character who is the main character of the game. There was no justice for Joel. This game robbed everything from you just for shock value. The current narrative of destroying the male character to make the female character rise is very weak story telling. It is disrespectful to both genders. Females even hate it. Worst of all the pacing of the story is horrible. You literally play as Abby the character we hate for half the game. They tried so hard to make us like her but none of it worked. This game is a waste of time and money and should have never been created as a sequel. The critics are liars and they don't care about what the fans want. They only care about their political narrative and force you to like something that you will never accept. Then they insult you by calling you names because you don't like the product they are praising. They are the worst kind of human being. Trust the gamers that actually love playing the kind of video games you like. Those are the ones who you should listen to. Vote with your wallet and avoid this dumpster fire. Why care for a game created by a studio that is run by Neil Druckmann who is a male feminist and does not care about the fans and the people he works with. That's why 75 percent of Naughty dog left the company due to how he treated them. This game is created by people that don't care about you and backed by people that hate you. The game wasn't made for the fans and gamers. Vote with your wallets and avoid this at all cost. Especially how they are trying to trick everyone with false advertisement into buying this. Look it up on YouTube. Don't trust the shill media. Watch the negative videos about this game and you will see the truth. Long live Joel and RIP to The Last of Us franchise. Expand

Graphically the game is one of the most appealing in the PS4. The animations are smooth and the integration with cutscenes is also phenomenal. The sound mixing is also perfect. I didn't found any bug or glitch in my playthrough.

The main problem is the story:

The first game had great graphics and an amazingly strong story: it was fairly predictable and simple in the end but they managed to delivered us some unforgettable moments between the characters and the harsh reality of a post-apocalyptic world. There was no plot-holes nor moments where any action by the characters wasn't justified.

In Part II, they forgot all of it. Too many unjustified actions by the main characters: they behave very differently compared to the first game, even "experienced" characters that were present in the first game seem to know nothing about how the Last of Us world works (rational vs emotional). Lots of plot-holes and the dangers presented in the post-apocalyptic world sometimes seem that they don't exist.

If I had to explain the story to someone that never heard of Last of Us I would say that the story is " a college project where 5 people wrote each part and in the end they tried to glue everything together".

Also it makes no sense for us to play at least 10 hours as the "villain" and even fight the main-character. I understood why: they wanted us to form a connection with the villain and give us the backstory and his/hers motivation. But the "villain" is a rigid and unempathetic character. Too stiff and afraid of everything. Like many people I was unable to have any affection.

It was so bad. It's like you picking up your favorite team in FIFA and the game forces you to play against it.

Also the gameplay is 75% equal to the first game. The default difficulty is too easy imo. You'll get bored fast especially if you played the first game

    This game has sadly failed.

    Hi everyone,

Just to make a little disclaimer, writing this test hurts me in my flesh. I wouldn’t be able to express the ways the first game, it’s world, it’s characters, it’s story and it’s music ( good lord, it’s music ) touched and influenced me.

I feel like saying this is unnecessary but due to the controversy about bad faith downvotes this game gets I guess I have to do it.

To establish this right away, from a technical point of view, this game is a MASTERPIECE. Regarding all the working methods controversy the development had, what the developers achieved here brings them to the top of the industry. Hats off to them.

Now, WHY has this game failed to me?

It would be tempting to say that the game actually “failed me”, that the game is simply not what I wanted, but I wouldn’t agree, and like to prove it in 2 points:

    * During these 7 years, I imagined everything that could possibly happen to our beloved characters, and mostly when Druckmann and Baker started warning us by saying “ This will be a divisive story “ or “ Don’t expect to relive the first game “, my body was ready. In fact, every key plot of the game was expected.

1- Remember the first 2016 trailer? Everyone was guessing that the Joel asking if Ellie was “really gonna go through with this” was a reminiscent image coming to Ellie’s mind.

2- When later on it was revealed that the game was gonna be about the cycle of hate and PERSPECTIVE, we pretty much foresaw that we would be brought to requestion our beliefs by putting ourselves in the shoes of Ellie’s wrongdoers.

Now, HOW has the game failed to me?

Actually, it concerns these exact two points.

1- Joel’s death: Now, I won’t go to the extremes of thinking they meant to disrespect him with the crazy theories of the Druckmann looking guy spitting on him.

I understand that this death HAD to be brutal in order to put us in a grieving storm to put us in a raging hate towards the killers, but how this death has been brought up simply ruins the effect and just keeps us wondering why it had to happen LIKE THAT rather than why did it have to happen to Joel?

I can’t accept it. How the hell does this vicious and clever smuggler had to get ambushed surrounded by armed nobodies while he’s randomly in the middle of them scratching his ass? And please don’t tell me “ well, he got soft with these years of peace. “, this argument wouldn’t have any backup for that and even Druckmann hinted the opposite by saying that a place like Jackson needs “ killers like Joel”.

2- Now once again I have to point out that to the really end of the game, I was all in for it. The totally absurd conditions of Joel death were thrown in the back of my head, and I kept going on.

As said earlier, I knew that I was gonna be brought to live Abby’s side of the story, and knowing that the game was meant to blur the lines of who is the good and the bad of this story, the game had a critical duty to create the empathy necessary to bring us to that uncertain point of the final battle

And unfortunately, although I had sympathy for Abby, I was nowhere near getting a dilemma at the end, since the characters didn't have much susbtance beside their function: One is a worried son, another is pregnant and hates Abby, Abby is a " garbage" although nothing comes backing this up ( unlike Joel who knew for the first game's ambush because .. ).

The worst part is that they even made Ellie so distant and bleak that at the ending battle, I wasn't wondering on which side I was, but I just knew that I hated Ellie AND Abby.

We are left with nothing in the end. A dark game so badly written that it seems that it's just for the sake of being dark.

    Heartbreaking.

I didn't liked the way storyline went, they killed the most loved character in the series (Joel) in the first 1-2 hours of the game and made him looks like he was the bad guy all this time. And then after that they made me play the Abby the who killed Joel like are you kidding me? I'm on journey to take Joel's revenge and now i am playing with that character, honestly i didn't even wanted to progress with the story after Joel's death. Story Just Sucks.... Gave this game 3 just because of the gameplay and graphics... Expand

A messy, absolutely scummy plot that pathetically uses the violence and revenge as its elements in all the wrong ways and which nullifies all the good elements of the previous game. The story also trashes all the characters, introducing new ones that are either bleak or awful and was reinforced by a equally scummy advertisement campaign. The gameplay elements are nothing out of this worldA messy, absolutely scummy plot that pathetically uses the violence and revenge as its elements in all the wrong ways and which nullifies all the good elements of the previous game. The gameplay elements are nothing out of this world and the game is plagued by horrible bugs. Yes, it is a game graphically well done, but which AAA game isn't at this point of this generation? it's nothing we haven't already seen done before: The Division 1 and 2, Gears 5, Battlefield V and Star Wars Battlefield are as graphically stunning as this one and were all released before it, so I don't see why the surprise. Frankly, it deserves a zero. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
