This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t understand it. I was so excited for this ever since they announced it. I watched all the trailers multiple times. Preordered it and played it the second it came out. The biggest letdown of my long video game history. I mean, in what universe would you ever sympathise with Abby. I guess if you’ve never played the first game you don’t have the emotional connection to Joel and it may be easier, but TLOU1 is my favourite game of all time, and I bet even if it isn’t for others they still see that game as a top 5 or 10. So naturally, Joel is one of my favourite characters of all time.

So when Joel was crippled, tortured and beaten to death by this woman, I am surely not the only one who wanted this woman to suffer equally as bad. I mean seriously, she kills him because he killed her dad, but her dad’s death was so much quicker and cleaner in comparison, and killing Joel in the way he was is in NO WAY an equivalent to this. In fact it made me want to kill her more. And ND expects us to SYMPATHISE with this psychopath?? She is UNLIKEABLE no matter how many ‘jokes’ she cracks, IRREDEEMABLE for not just what she did but HOW she did it, and her story feels so drawn out. There are some good set pieces in Abby’s segments, but I had no motivation to keep her alive and I hate this character, and so all these events lost any impact: I felt nothing. I just wanted it to be over. I got especially angry at the bit where you literally have to go against Ellie and beat the hell out of her. Who would want to do that, SERIOUSLY. Who. I would rather watch two cats fight to the death than hurt such a beloved character of the franchise. I hated every second of it. And the ending is so stupid I don’t even want to talk about it. I’ll just say this - I stood up from my chair, screamed at the tv and I couldn’t get it out my head - this wishy-washy ending would never happen, and it renders the entire game pointless. To create such a horrible character and to not see them meet the justice they deserve beats the point of the whole ‘Ellie gets revenge’ thing and all the death and destruction that happens throughout is rendered pointless. Only reason I don’t give it a 0 is because the gameplay mechanics, graphics and soundtrack are nice, and the superhero cards are pretty cool, but apart from those things the story is such a massive letdown and leaves this franchise on such a bitter and disappointing note.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not one for writing online reviews, and I wish I didn't feel compelled to join the negative reviewers when it comes to this game, but I do.

I am not butt-hurt about things many others seem upset about. My masculinity and sexuality aren't threatened by Ellie or her relationship with Dina. I'm not going to complain about the fact Joel died the way he did. The people whining about him going out that way have largely missed the point of the world set up in the first game. It isn't a world where being a bad-ass or a hero will guarantee you the kind of death everyone else would approve of. It's the kind of world where bad luck and making a wrong turn or letting your guard down at the wrong time, even for a few seconds, can cost you your life, so his death was as fitting as any other because those are the kinds of deaths this world hands out.

What bothers me about the game, and why it's getting such a low score from me, is that Naughty Dog lied to everyone about what it was. I didn't get the game they convinced me to buy in advance. I got half of that game, and half of a different game about someone I don't care for and spent the first half of the game actively wanting to kill.

I understand what Neil Druckmann is trying to do. It is presumptuous, arrogant, ham-handed, and disrespectful.

I could explain why at great length, but my main problem remains that this is not the game I was led by the marketing campaign to believe I was buying.

What Naughty Dog did here was a bit like marketing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to everyone, as a story continuing the saga of the protagonists of Harry Potter, told from the point of view of Harry Potter, and then reaching the halfway point in the book and starting over with the chapter title "Owl Post" a second time, with the opening sentences of the chapter being:

"Amanda Trakeskeal-- the strangely mannish daughter of the guy standing second to the left behind The Dark Lord the last time he was seen alive-- lay on her bed, contemplating revenge on Rubeus Hagrid, who had trampled her father to death on his way out of the ruins of the Potter house, cradling young Harry in his arms. Amanda spared a moment to wonder why so many people said her face looked 'punchable,' before steering her thoughts back to...."

You know, Ms. Rowling, that's okay. You don't need to bother trying to tell me the rest of that story. I have no interest in Amanda Trakeskeal as a person, because I didn't buy the book "Harry Potter & Amanda Trakeskeal & the Prisoner of Azkaban as Told From Two Different Points of View Because We Got Confused About the Fact This Isn't Star Wars and None of the People Reading This Give a Crap About the Idea a Great Many Truths This Narrative Clings to Depend Greatly on the Protagonist's Point of View."

Same thing here. Naughty Dog is not going to teach me some high-minded lesson about the futility of revenge and holding grudges by making me play the game from the point of view of both Ellie and Abby for a couple of reasons, chief among them being that I did not buy a game about the strangely mannish daughter of the guy who was standing second to the left behind the Dark Lord the last night he was seen alive, so I have no interest in the story from her point of view.

Abby exists to give the protagonists whose story I'm interested in something to struggle against and overcome. She isn't a real person; she's a narrative device. Forgetting her point in the narrative ruins the narrative.

Even Stephenie Meyer was able to figure out most people weren't going to care about the story from the point of view of someone who was only related to a minor secondary character on the antagonists' side, and made that a separate thing so the fans who might be interested could read it, and the fans who were reading the main story didn't have to slog through a bunch of garbage they'd find irritatingly irrelevant to the experience they were buying into, which is exactly how Naughty Dog should have handled Abby's campaign. They should have included it as a second campaign or DLC you could play in addition to Ellie's so it didn't interfere with your ability to complete the story-line you bought the game to play through.

And the shame of it is, they sacrificed being able to develop their new protagonists to the point they could be characters we cared about in order to half-ass trying to make us care about the other side, and it cost them the opportunity to give us an interesting new cast of characters and plot that would ultimately justify Joel's death as its inciting event.

Going half-in on developing twice the number of characters and half-in on developing two opposing plots doesn't add up to the same thing giving 100% to developing a single cast and story-line does.

    It just leaves everything wanting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm going to start this out by saying that the only reason this game got a rating of 4, is because I genuinely had some fun experiences getting immersed in the world and going back 7 years in time for $60 and playing a game I could pop in my ps3 and just ignore the graphical changes and identical combat system, no seriously, go back and play the first game, identical! It's like they spent 7 years beating the script with a rock and some tumblr quotes for character development. It's Joel and Ellie. That's the story, how hard was it to stick to that? I can promise you 90% of the people who came to play, got to the Abby portion and realized once they found a collectible that she was going to take up way more time than anyone wanted. I speedrunned Abby, Lev had a great story, but would've been more heartfelt if she weren't with the shehulk plot killer. 4/10 would refund if I could. Expand

    Good:
    Amazing Graphics
    Some cool game mechanics
    Good Soundtrack
    thats is

    Bad:
One if the worst stories i had ever seen
The gameplay its still the same there is barley any improvement to it
    Horrible Character Development
Questioable character treatments compared to his predecesor

the main problem of this game its story, it sucks it really really sucks, they killed a beloved character in the first 2 hours in a way that is laughable, this makes liking Abby almost imposible no matter what, she just killed such a beloved character from the fans that no matter what her story is, barley any one will like her, in order to not make this so long i will jump straight in to the ending where this game makes everything meaningless, the world of TloU its suppose to be cruel, cold and horrible Ellie was doing what she tough was right during the hole game, she and Tommy killed almost every single friend of Abby, witch makes her decision of of let her live completely stupid, the first game story was amazing, it didnt care what was the right choice for humanity, it didnt matter the life of those that wish to save others, it was a cruel and selfish act because thats just how the world of TloU is, to see Ellie falling into the path of vengance, of hate was going great, Ellie was starting to becoming a Cruel murderer that just wanted to take revenge for those who killed his "father" but in the end she lets Abby live for no reason this makes the entire game pointless, if Ellie woula killed Abby the story would be a lot much better, no, no just because "i hate abby" but because we woulda seen Ellie following the same path as Joel, killing Abby maybe it was not the right thing but she didnt care about that, she woulda transform just like Joel did in the first game, commit a selfish act just to feel better but in the end TloU just misses the mark, just missis the opportunity do deliver a cruel horrible story just like the first game and because of this the game fails

It has to work out. How wrong I was. I'd like to start this by saying that in no way is any of my anger or disappointment at the game due to the LGBTQ themes, of course it isn't and its harmful that these days people can't criticize a game that touches on these issues without being labelled a homophobe, sexist, or transphobe.

This game is straight up below average. To begin with, the product doesn't even function as it should, I experienced two hard crashes and a game breaking bug that forced me to replay 3 hours of progress, as well as an unbelievable amount of graphical errors that forced a reload to checkpoint. That being said, at times this game is an absolute graphical powerhouse, certain locations are absolutely gorgeous and many cutscenes look absolutely top class in terms of direction and animation, though this is not always the case - some facial animations are absolute nightmare fuel and certain areas look straight up worse than the majority of locations in the original, I don't know how this is possible, when the PS4 is capable of presenting consistent visual masterpieces such as Death Stranding, and even Naughty Dog's own Uncharted 4 which looks far, far better than this game's washed out color palette and muddy, low res textures (the lighting is, however, stunning). The gameplay has barely evolved from the original, which already felt incredibly clunky all the way back in 2013. The quality of life improvements are welcome, but there's an unbelievable amount of missed opportunity when it comes to potential uses of the environment, a stealth system that could've been utilized so much better, and even the missed opportunity of multi-faction fights (infected and human enemies in the same area, while there were a few, they were much less impressive than those of the Left Behind DLC all those years ago).

Sound design and soundtrack are however a huge high point, the sounds of each and every weapon feels fantastic, and really adds to the weighty, visceral combat, while the soundtrack once again retains the masterful subtlety of the original, if only it had a half decent story to compliment.

Speaking of which, what in the everloving hell was the story? Generic revenge plot with minimal subtlety that utilizes pure shock value, dialogue that is reminiscent of a bad fan translation in the late 90s, and 0 character development throughout. Not to mention it utterly dashes any and all character development from the original. I for one, am not against the big decision made early on in the game (You know which one I'm talking about) if only it had been done well, and led to an interesting, compelling narrative. Hell, I'd even go as far as to say it was the correct decision and needed to happen. But everything that followed felt like a bad dream. Every single emotional moment ended up feeling like an absolute nothing. Endless plotholes and cheap play on emotions that makes utterly zero sense in the context of the world and events that have already happened. Each character death is almost laughable, half of the time I'd forget their names not moments after they're gone, sometimes while they're still alive right next to me (Which is a testament to how empty they feel). Take Tess, or Henry and Sam, or even Sarah from the first game for example. Not a whole lot of screentime whatsoever, yet their deaths meant something - their deaths brought tears to my eyes. In this one, every a main character who the game had tried to condition you to like through the tropiest of means mind you (They're nice to a dog, they're nice to kids - even though they advocate torture and are constantly committing war crimes, that kind of thing) Every time they would die, I could not care less and that really saddens me.

i'm coming to the end of the character limit now and while I have so much more I want to say about this mess of a game, I'll leave it here. I desperately wanted this game to hit the heights it should've, but unfortunately I will now be scrubbing this one from my memory and starting a new playthrough of the original immediately.

You're better than this Naughty Dog, also stop being such a pretentious brat on Twitter Neil Druckmann, its not a good look.

4/10 - not a terrible game, but absolutely below average, I'd rather play mass effect andromeda again than ever replay this confused kick in the dick of a game

With TLOU2, Naughty Dog (ND) promised to "subvert our expectations." Truly, they succeeded; we all expected a rich story with fantastic character development, and instead we got...well, we got this pile of junk.
But first, let's begin with two positives.
1). TLOU2’s visuals are stunning. The environments are rich and immersive, dense with foliage that characterizes a world in which nature is reclaiming its agency from humanity. The sheer detail indicates the massive commitment of time, energy, and resources that went into the creation and development of each environment in this game. In this respect, the game is incredibly successful and will surely serve as a quintessence of visual development for years to come.
2). Accessibility. ND's work here truly has revolutionary potential. The game gives you sweeping discretion to change most major aspects of the game. You can customize the difficulty in many ways, for instance, making enemies more perceptive, allies stronger, and more loot available. You can have the game explicitly indicate the direction, or even simply solve environmental puzzles if you want to advance the narrative. It gives the player tremendous power to alter (or even break) the game state, which makes the game more "accessible" (as the name suggests) to some players and can facilitate a more relaxed, fun experience for others.

A quick note on gameplay. It is in many ways reminiscent of the first game, but does afford the player more options in combat. The ability to go prone, as well as craft silencers and arrows certainly gives the player more options than the first game did. The dodge but is a nice touch, but could have been implemented more effectively and remains rather clunky. Encounters do tend to drag on unnecessarily long; in some instances enemies seem to spawn endlessly. Furthermore, the gameplay exhibits a repetitiveness and lack of novelty similar to the first game which ultimately limits its potential. Especially in the course of 25-30 hours, the gameplay can become quite stale. Nevertheless, it does retain the same value its predecessor possessed and sprinkles in some minor additions without changing the core mechanics.

However, these well-designed aspects of the game are completely overshadowed by the story, the "claim to fame" of the first game, which is in no uncertain terms a total ****
First, the death. While the death of a main character can be acceptable even to the staunchest of fans if done properly, ND failed ENTIRELY in this regard. Joel's death was unceremonious, torturous, and frankly disrespectful. Not only are the events leading to his brutal murder contrived and unimaginative, but he dies early in the game merely as a narrative device, enabling ND to pursue a revenge plot. For ND, Joel's death represents a means to an end, rather than an end in of itself. They show absolutely no regard for one of the most beloved characters of the first game, a character that fans (at least ones who did not read the leaks) were INTENTIONALLY led to believe would figure prominently in the game. Instead, we see him only in flashback sequences. The fact that the player is later forced to play as Joel's murderer only adds insult to injury, making the player seriously question whether to continue or simply put the controller down.

Furthermore, the already-burdened narrative is riddled with noticeable plot holes and oversights. Why does Abby not kill Tommy and Ellie when she has them in captivity? Her actions in the remainder of the game suggest a sociopathic misanthropy with no regard for the value of human life (more on this to follow). Clearly in any realistic setting, she would have eliminated both of them to "tie up loose ends," remarks that her compatriots offer. It makes less sense because Joel himself, at the end of the first game, kills Marlene, responding snidely to her pleas for her life, "You'd just come after her (Ellie)." Additionally, Ellie leaving the map in the aquarium after she kills two characters is similarly unrealistic. While she clearly exhibits trauma at the thought of killing a pregnant woman, surely Tommy or Jesse, who arrive moments later, would have noticed the map and grabbed it. These glaring issues add fuel to an already on-fire story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a game that’s been been in production for 7 years its literally a last of us skin for uncharted 4. The gameplay has had minor tweets added to it after the first game but it just stays the same boring fight after fight all game through honestly the seven years must’ve gone into forcing shock mechanic so around every corner. The story is lacking and has no point, you spend the entire game slaughtering people animals etc without remorse as we watch Ellie spiral down into a crazed kill obsessed tiresome idiot completely destroying the Ian person built up in the first game much like Joel whom isn’t reduced to this complete polar opposite to who he wasn’t in the first game, and in the end you let the person your hunting go because that’s multi tier story telling aka flopping. You then realise that the entire plot was for nothing all the killing was for nothing and all your friends that died and suffered to get you you’re revenge does so for nothing it’s all pointless. The game in a post apocalyptic environment seems to still retain all of its politics it’ll lovingly force down your throat within its world despite the majority populous being freaking plant zombies. It’s also worth pointing out that all the straight characters in the game either get slaughtered off or get beaten and acquire such injuries that they might as well be dead because it’s would be better than dealing with the outcome on their bodies. Owen is killed, Mel dead, levs sister bang, The dude that hints that he’s slept with most of the wolves women and the guy that spits on joels dead body, dead without a second thought cuz i mean with the director being a male feminist who oddly looks similar to him I guess you gotta make it so the personalities are so far apartment or kill them quickly so you can’t make the connection, Abbie’s black doctor friend well Ellie went weed hacker on her because why not she wasn’t already dying right why not make her a pile of sludge, Joel swing and a beaten corpse, Jesse the only likeable new character booom for shock value even has a kid with Dina but he mustn’t know he mustn’t it would be bad if he found out for whatever reason. Tommy is the only one that remains after it all and he has one leg fully functional and a permeant mangled face so naturally he also needs to loose his marriage on top of that because why not drive my point further. Even Abby is starved to near death after nearly being sold to slavery and thrown into these crazy situations that no one would be able to get out of. But wait what about Ellie and Dina they where treated bad too, well no Dina got her head banged a few times and sure Ellie left her but she’s has a bigger family we never see back at the town so. Ellie got beaten to near death a few times but the entirety of the game is focused around her pointless effort to be stupid so she deserves it for all the crap she puts people though for literally no reason,She leave she her perfect family years after for a second time she’s allowed to live happy, and then doesn’t kill Abby to return back home to find no one there. Should have been a standalone game for £20-30 for 20 hours of gameplay we got split With a character we hate and continue to further hate as we play her. Isn’t even worth that much of a replay there’s no replay ability value. Expand

After seven years of anticipation, ND gives its loyal followers a contrived, hackneyed revenge plot that isn’t even well-orchestrated. The main theme that ND hammers into the player’s head throughout the game is childishly simple: "revenge=bad." Any children's parable could have taught this lesson. And probably more effectively too, because the story-telling has major issues as well. The narrative follows the vindictive pretensions of Ellie and Abby and attempts to pontificate this "revenge is no good" theme. By the end, however, it is clear that Abby got all she wanted and lost nothing of value to her while Ellie gained nothing and lost everything of value to her. As her friends are systematically killed, Abby evinces no strong emotional reactions to their deaths and never even mentions them. In essence, as her friends die, her affect remains totally flat while her homicidal fantasies become increasingly potent, to the point where she nearly knowingly murders a pregnant woman with ZERO remorse. Revenge brings her no ill; in fact, in a cruel twist of fate, the only ill the comes her way is precipitated by her attempts to rebuild her life with the Fireflies. On the other hand, Ellie bears the full brunt of ND’s “comeuppance of vengeance,” losing every significant relationship in her life either through death or estrangement. She even loses the ability to play the guitar, the last real connection she had to Joel. The inconsistency in this narrative is jarring, displaying a contempt for another of fans’ favorite characters and undermining ND’s condescending attempts at moralizing.

Lastly, one of ND’s hallmarks was making gamers feel a connection with the characters that inhabit their fantastical worlds. The Ellie-Joel relationship is largely responsible for the success of the first game. In this game, they throw this out the window. They present gamers with a distasteful slate of static, forgettable, and unlikeable characters. In fact, many feel satisfaction as the characters from the Abby arch are murdered by Ellie and Tommy. Players harbor a special animus for Abby, the emotionless, robotic killer of Joel, a character that ND forces players to follow for half of the game, a huge risk that failed spectacularly. ND tirelessly tries to ingratiate Abby with the player, attempting to give them her side of the story. They somehow do not realize that such efforts are doomed from the start. When Abby murdered Joel, she was immediately labelled irreconcilable by many players, myself included. No amount of “seeing her side” would save her in my eyes, making her portion of the game tremendously difficult, even unplayable for some. I’m sure many experienced an acute schadenfreude as they saw her enervated and emaciated body at the end of the game; or, like me, maybe they were simply too disillusioned to care.

I could say much more here about the unconvincing story writing, dreadful character development, cheap shock-value “twists,” or about how this game essentially invalidates the ending of the first game, but I’ll leave that to others because I know there are thousands more who feel the same bitter disappointment and resentment that I do.

Which is actually surprising as Naughty Dog is usually the developer with best stories. They created a wonderful story in the Part I. They developed Joel and Ellie characters bit by bit. And what did they do in the Part II? They immediately killed one of the beloved characters, they force you to play for the killer of that character - Abby. We forced to play as Abby without any knowledge about her and, honestly, her character development is by any means weak. In the end I left with the feeling that they wanted to end the story with Ellie and Dina "happily ever after", but understood that they have f**ked it up and made a kind of continuation in Santa Barbara. So all in all I'm very disappointed in the story. I expected much better from Naughty Dog studio. Expand

This game was beautifully detailed and actually quite fun to play, but i, as I'm sure thousands of other fans, came for their story which was a total let down and very forced. I'm so disappointed in Neil Druckmann as all through the promotion it was all Joel and Ellie, there was little to no promotion of any new playable characters. I felt that there should have been another game inbetween this where you play as just Abby, then have this game as the third, minus the choppy time line. I didn't have a problem with Joel dying, however, i felt Joel was used so much in promotion compared to game time that they slightly conned the public, no I don't feel entitled in any way but as a die hard fan, who has invested so much time and money into this franchise, i can't help feel totally let down by this great company. The game itself was good, the gameplay battle system was good but the fact that you have to play 10 hours in a character you do not want to play but rotate. The end was awful, ellie left the house ready to kill abby and by the time I got to the abby kill section and wanted to do it the game literally prevented it.
And also that Ellie came home to Dina and Jj over him and the game ended.

As a person who has passed the first part three times and just passed the second, I confidently declare that the second part is a spit in the soul of the players. The plot is the biggest problem of the game (after the LGBT agenda). I am sure that each of the players after the end of the first part, I thought a little about the future of the characters, and I **** sure that such a nonsense could not fantasize. I myself cried on the assassination of Joel, damn it, it was the best scene in the game, I felt how animal aggression fills me from the inside out with all this scum, I already craved in the face of Ellie to discourage everyone involved in this. And the problem with the game is that AT THE END THIS DESIRE DOES NOT DEPLETE. Abby and her friends are absolutely disgusting to me, I do not care that her father is an incredibly kind person, because he saved the zebra (and wanted to kill Ellie for the sake of a vaccine, which would not even ask if she agreed). I’m already silent about the fact that the vaccine will not help this world, but what if it does not work? What if some idiot drops a vaccine cone? What if the vaccine is stolen and will be using it to try to control the world? All the blood at the end of the first part is entirely on the conscience of the Cycad. Okay, next, did it bother me alone that Joel saved Abby? Well, it’s illogical, because in the first part he could figure out a scoundrel without even talking to him. But I’m talking about something else, Joel saved LIFE to this pumped Abinator. Maybe you should think again before playing golf? Well, since Drackmann wanted us to look at the situation from Abby, then let's take a look. You killed Joel, here on the floor next to him lies his closest man, who, through tears, screams that he will kill you all. Can kill her? Yes, no, some kind of nonsense, let's just leave and wait for the answer. About two Asian women spontaneously introduced into the game, I’m just silent. The ending is just the apogee of all this nonsense. Imagine that Joel at the end of the first part will kill all the cicadas, and then still give Ellie into the hands of Marlene in the parking lot. Absolutely the same. I repeat, if the players were given a choice at the end: to kill Abby or not. I bet 99% of the players would kill this pumped something. I saw some players write that they turned off the game at the moment in the theater, when you, playing as Abby, received a portion of lead from a shotgun from Ellie. That says it all. Sorry for my English, I'm from Russia. Expand

I feel compelled to attempt to help people out. This game is a difficult game to review, I would say its the best made worst game I have ever played. I am not sure who this game was made for because fans of the original game will dislike it intensely, the progressive crowd will hate it as its filled with tokenism and an obscene amount of violence directed towards to LGBT and POC. You can't recommned it to people who enjoy stories as it feels "incomplete", The best thing I can say is its a different experience form the usual, mind you I said different not GOOD, so yeah if you want something differnt try this game
    Good
Its disgustingly good looking ( probably the best looking PS4 exclusive)
The sound design and music are top notch
    Runs silky smooth

    Bad
The gun play feels last gen and is mainly stealth based and when compared to other stealth games (dishonored 2, deus ex mankind divided and MGSV) its really mdeiocre and gets very stale after 10 hours
    The Ugly
    Story
The story is horrendous, dark, bleak ,hopeless, nihilistic to the point of being gaming first snuff game. You feel sad and drained not because you empathized with the characters, but becuase the game relentlessly through dark gritty brutal violence at you. Its like watching a puppy getting kicked violent down a flight of steps over and over and over again ...its really puzzling TBH as Naughty Dog are really good at telling competent stories

My advice wait for a sale

One of the most highly anticipated games ever, and also the biggest disappointment in gaming history. The best thing in the game is the music, graphics and the menu options. Everything else is a complete mess. And forces you to play as a character you hate. Never uninstalled a game so fast in my life!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The overall look of the game looked amazing, they smashed the graphics for the last of us part II. However the story was poorly written and came no where near as close to being a good game as the first TLOU. Making the game look amazing doesn’t make the game amazing. The story is such an important element (especially in TLOU franchise), the second game isn’t even comparable to the first one story wise. Not to mention what they did to one of their most loved characters only a few hours into the game and misleading trailers. Killing off a favourite in such a disrespectful way left me feeling empty for the rest of the gameplay and not really as interested. After playing the TLOU2, I feel they shouldn’t have even bothered making a part II. Expand

Even tough the graphics and gameplay were good, the story was really bad. I've never seen a sequel fail so bad at expanding the world and story of the first game

The graphics, animations and setting are top notch, but the way the developers make you play half of the game with a character you can't help but hate completely ruined it for me. The story seems to be written to shock and show gamers that nothing is black and white but it ends up being a disjointed story where you feel attached to no one including Ellie. A huge disappointment after all of these years of waiting. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics were superb and action sequences were mostly exciting. The storyline was contrived and seemed out of sequence. The characters were underdeveloped and the dialogue felt like it was written by a third wave feminist just out of her first semester of gender studies. Killing Joel at the beginning and then making you play as his killer for half the game felt like a slap in the face to everyone who enjoyed playing tlou. Expand

El juego es excepcional en varios aspectos, tanto como el gameplay, banda sonora, pero dondo cojea es en la narrativa, ya a mitad del juego la narrativa se torna amarga llevandote a un final muy triste.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am disappointed and heartbroken. I bought this game for beloved characters Ellie and Joel. It seems like game wants to get you to like Abby and it tried very hard that you are forced to play her for a very long time. This where it gets wrong when you buy a ticket for your favorite music concert but you get tricked because you expected your favorite singer to be there and he is but decide to give the stage to someone else unknown to you. When Abby breaks into the theater and confronts Ellie the game takes you way back in time and I was not planning to play 10 hours of her but the game force you anyway. While playing as her all that is going through my mind is what is going to be the outcome at the theater which I had to wait very long time. It is like when you are watching your favorite movie and you get to the climax you have been waiting for and then you get hit by an ad- that is what it felt like. I got no interest in Abby or her story after she killed Joel just take me to the theater. But no the game decided to get you on Abby sides by playing 10 hours of her. At times it was like maybe this is it but wait there is more and more. I feel like I played more as Abby than Ellie. 2020 could not get any worse and devloper decided to do this. Expand

Game of 2 halves. First is great and about characters you care about, the second is not and about characters you positively dislike but have to keep playing.
I haven't not finished a game in 10 years but I've better things to do than be irritated at having to play characters I don't care about.
Youtube will, I'm sure tell me what happens in the end. Sadly, I'm OK with that. Overall, not

Clearly doesn't deserve a 0, but not a 10 either. Visually the game is beautiful and very impressive. The gameplay is okayish, nothing really new and refreshing and kinda repetitive (too much repetitive). The story is, in my opinion, really bad. I see what they tried to do, but simply failed. It relies way too much on shock value, gore for the sake of gore, overused and uninspired tropes and tries so hard to be emotional when everything disconnects the player from the characters, which almost all of them are bland and uninteresting. There's also a very big pacing issue, parts drag on for way too long and propose nothing of interest, In the end, good visuals, good but dated gameplay and very poor story. The game really suffers from bad writing. Expand

Character evolution was poor and bias towards one character. At times, the game was boring and violence was over the top.

I don’t understand why all critics says it’s a masterpiece....

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
