I wanted to turn it off so many times, struggled to get through the game for a terrible ending. Graphics are amazing, some parts of the story are good but I just am so let down by what they've done, playing as Abbey made no sense I skipped most of her cut scenes I don't get why they did what they did. The pacing on this game was horrible, confusing, full of random flashbacks, it was way longer than it should have, literally made me play as a character I didn't enjoy. Even though I enjoyed the gameplay it got super repetitive because the game was so long, however, the graphics and soundtrack were amazing. Expand

Severely lacks game luster after an hour or 2. The combat is severely lacking and feels forced, unlike the first title. Oh and the characters are trash, just kept on dragging the story through the mud and the build up on everything for the past couple years was a waste.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved first game, replayed it like 5 times and this game i uninstalled straight after finishing. I didn't really wanted to finish it at all. Gameplay good, game looks and sounds grate, but the story is where i see problem. I can understand wanting to hide some plot-twist, but straight out lying about it, its just not ok. I'm talking about Joel death, i really came to like this character while playing 1 game and to kill him in first 2 hours of the game and the way he was killed. Its just disrespectful for this character#Joel deserve better. If you really needed him dead it could be arranged better then it was. After that Abby for me was irredeemable, i didn't want to play as her. I killed her on purpose often, this was the moment where i wanted to drop the game, but i also wanted to see how it ends so i kept playing. Than we came to Abby vs Elly fight and again i doubted if its worth it to finish this game. And then we came to the end, i personally wasn't satisfied with how it ends. Elly lost everything for nothing, didn't even kill Abby in the end. I suppose playing as Abby should have caused some sympathy for her, which it didn't, and i had to force myself to play this part (which wasn't all that short). If it was some new game with new characters it would have been taken better, but as it is sequel... Flashbacks was great they brought back what i loved from the first game interaction between Joel and Elly, but it also showed part 2 we can never get. In the end i didn't enjoy playing this game all that much(especially not Abby part),but it had its moments, anyway i'm gonna forget i aver played this game and never will return to it again. Expand

While the basics are flawless, the narrative lacks purpose, the character arcs miss genuine inflection and the driving force of the whole story feels empty and does not provide justifiable motivation. Overall TLOU provides a fun experience for those not familiar with the theme and purpose presented in the original, however when compared as a sequel it would be safe to say that the story that kept players anticipating for 7 years is was predictable, uninspired and seems to cater to less complex themes (such as vengeance, heartbreak and abandonment). The story arc of TLOU Part 2 detracts from the importance of your actions, and instead forces you into uncomfortable situations for nothing more than shock value and hollow motivation; of which you spend the next 20 hours tracing a predefined ending with little to no closure over. While it is clear that NaughtyDog left room for Part 3, I would have to advise against it, fearing worse bastardization of a story meant to inspire visceral emotion, that instead caters to impulse and bloodlust with little to no moral ambiguity to ponder over. The game is not awful, but the the decline in quality is too step. After more than 15 hours of gameplay, I just don't have the will to keep playing. The fact that after so much time playing the game I just can't muster the will to finish what remains really speaks how disappointing this game is. A real shame :(

I never felt a connection to the new characters as much as I did try. Naughty Dog made a character that was so obvious you were supposed to sympathize for. But it was so FORCED! Unlike the first one which was organic. In the first game, I didn’t even notice how attached to Joel I was until he he got severely hurt. I was surprised. I couldn’t get that spark back this time around. The story was highly disappointing and all over the place. This is just my personal opinion, but it was too long. I’m a slow gamer as it is, and this game took forever. You can tell there is a message being pushed. Whether or not you like the message I believe is a personal decision every individual has the right to make. And for those who do not like the message should not be condemned. Especially when it so upfront and obvious. On the positive side, like everyone clearly praises, it’s graphics are amazing. I was surprised I was playing a PS4 game. A lot of effort was put into graphics and it shows. Gameplay is familiar. Still good and easy to learn like the first one. And my oh my, can you customize the settings. That is nice for people who really like to control their game flow. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II had tremendous potential but the end product feels like it shot itself in the foot and at times, feels subversive. What made the first game great was seeing Joel and Ellie's develop a father-daughter relationship. They persevered through rocky times and basked in short, heartwarming moments before reaching an ultimately bittersweet ending.

The Last of Us II takes what made the first story great and throws it out the window. While dark, brutal moments are expected in a post-apocalyptic type environment, killing off Joel so early and in such a gruesome manner just set up the game for disappointment. Then making the player play as Joel's killer and for an extended duration is just rubbing salt in the wound.

The gameplay, while solid and with some satisfying melee, isn't enough to make up for the lack of interest that sets in after Joel's death and only compounds when switching to Abby.

I see what the director and writer were going for and their desire to do something a bit daring with the story is commendable. However, the execution just falls flat on its face. Thez wanted a divisive game and it certainly succeedes on that front.

A massive disappointment, a technical masterpiece with few good moments and an awesome boss fight ultimately messed up by terrible decisions and story. Culminating in an unsatisfying ending. They make you play as the villain to make you root for her, but it all falls flat and you just don’t care about her. The villain’s character model is ridiculous and the game makes you fight Ellie as her expecting you to hve fun while doing it. They wanted us to be frustrated by a long game with moments that make you just tear up in agony, good job. I loved the original game, the chemistry between Joel and Ellie and the moral dilemmas it had, but this new game is as if it were written by someone who hates the first game. Nice job Naught, I won’t trust you again and will definitely never buy a game that has anything to do with Neil Druckman. Sold my copy of the game for 90% of the price that I originally paid. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not good... simple. This is a perfect example of a game that has great graphics and great gameplay, but terrible story. Players want to sympathize with the characters they are playing as. Not play as someone who they utterly hate for 40% of the game. With over 20+ hours of gameplay, all you can ask after the beginning section is when is it going to be over. It starts as a revenge story, but then it just starts branching out and showing it's stance on different themes in today's world with a character going under a transition from girl to boy, and lesbian relationships, which in part isn't a bad thing, but for the game story to be played out like that, it doesn't take the full effect and instead portrays these themes as a joke. It's terrible to see critics loving this game over the graphics and gameplay when a game like this specializes on its story which was perfectly built with the previous title. This game's story is an insult to the last and the advertising for this game is fake since most of the players thought Joel was still going to be around. If this was what they meant to do with the story, all I can say is that it was terribly executed by the director and the naughty dog team. This isn't just an insult to the previous tile, but also an insult to gaming reviews and the fanbase as a whole.

TL;DR: 4/10 because gameplay and graphics are pretty good. Everything else is ****

This game is something I had been looking forward to for 7 years. The original game is to this day my favourite game ever, having played it 6 times, and the DLC twice.
I didn't want to set myself up for disappointment though. After all, sequels more often than not do not live up to the height of their original. The original was an easy 10/10, and I went into this expecting an 8/10.
The game got off to an okay start. Was unsure of the weird tension between Joel and Ellie, although this makes sense when we find out later on that Ellie had returned to the Hospital and discovered the truth of what happened there. Although, I was a bit confused as to why I was suddenly playing as a stranger only a little bit into the game...
Then there's the scene that a lot of people are angry about... I remember in the original game, never wanting to hop off for the night, I always wanted to keep going, and find out how their story ends. I finished it over 3 days, and always feeling really excited to get back on the PS3 and continue the story/game.
Well after Joel's death scene, I never felt that excitement. I distinctly remember wanting NOT to play. I had to basically force myself to get back onto the PS4 the next time to continue, with a "lets just get through it" demeanour. I still wanted to play through it quickly, but that was just to avoid spoilers, not because I had any strong desire to play.
There comes a scene roughly 1/3 into the game where Abby finds Ellie and Co at the Theatre, and hold Tommy at gunpoint, before then ending on a cliff hanger and taking you on some long-winded flashback through Abby's story.
This was a character I hated. I had no emotional connection with this character, they had brutally murdered my favourite character, and I had absolutely 0 interest in their story and didn't want to play as them.
For the majority of the Abby segment I was bored out of my mind. A first for me in any Naughty Dog game. I had 0 emotional investment in this character, and just wanted to get back to the characters I was emotionally invested in.
Did her scenes make me like her better? Yes. Her attitude towards Lev and Yara, and how her relationship with them grew throughout the story was beautiful. Did it make me like her though? No.
Overall, I didn't have an issue with Joel dying. They live in a **** world, with a dangerous infection and dangerous people. The idea of him retiring is a bit unrealistic. Like many other people it's the way he died that upset me.
The sick and disappointment that sat in my stomach for the rest of the game after seeing a character I had liked for 7 years go down like that, ruined the rest of what could have been a really good game. To then make you play as the character that killed him and try to be forced to like her, and at some point be FORCED to beat up Ellie even though I’m sure that was something literally no one wanted to do, was just such an awful decision and the cherry on top.
To force player to beat up a beloved character was one of the many terrible design choices of the game.
And I think it does come down to perhaps Naughty Dog's underestimation of players emotional investment in this character. I 100% know that if I hadn't played the original, and started out with this one that I would think it was a beautiful game.
As a standalone game it is brilliant. Easily a 9/10. But unfortunately it's not a standalone game, and because of everything they created with the first game, and how they then destroyed that with the second, I can't give it any more than a

Gameplay in the 2nd one is insane and the artwork is out of this world. Although this is the case, I just feel that the creators really destroyed the series with this game. The story was honestly just awful and was all over the place. I am really upset that I waited 7 years to play as Joel and Ellie again only to spend the majority of the time playing as pointless characters and failing to sympathize with the main antagonistic. I also did not care for how anti-climatic the plot became. (SPOILER AHEAD) When Abby has her weapon on Tommy and Ellie, it makes no sense to ruin the momentum by switching off into an overdrawn out storyline of Abby's journey. Along with this the ending honestly makes no sense. A game that is clearly about violence and revenge decides, in the end, that violence isn't the answer??? Like come on, aside from the fact Joel got killed off in the worst way possible, why did Ellie just decide to forget all the pain she was caused and let Abby live after being so clearly determined to kill Abby. Overall, the game is decent at best and if you were a fan of the first one I'd recommend not ruining the series for yourself unless you are super bored. Expand
