I don’t know what people are whining about. The gameplay is spectacular, the story is keeps you engaged, the scars are terrifying, and the cutscene to gameplay transitions are fantastic. Not to mention that it’s absolutely gorgeous! 10 out of 10 for me!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not the game the fans wanted at all. Naughty Dog took a huge risk with the story. First off, amazing graphics and gameplay. We had to watch our favorite characters be destroyed and taken to their lowest points. We had to attempt to empathize with the “villain” of the game. No one liked playing as Abby at first, but she is actually pretty like able by the end. The way the game shows the affects of actions and comes together full circle is amazing. Ellie not killing abby shows that she has a tiny bit of human left in her. It is heartbreaking but amazing at the same time. It’s not meant to be a happy ever after story or something that takes the easy route. We get a better view of the world and the harsh way that actions affect everyone. Naughty dog said that you have to go in with an open mind and that not everyone would like the game. At first I hated playing as Abby and hated the way the game was going but it changed my mind and questioned my morals. Expand

I replayed The Last Of Us remastered the week before part 2 released so it was very easy to compare the two. The original is a 10/10 but does have its flaws. I forgot how little dialogue there actually is between Ellie and Joel and how much of the game is spent running around in silence. I have heard a lot of people saying they loved the first game but hated the second one; yet many of the flaws they passionately criticize in this new release are very much present in the original. Personally I thought part two was a very smart continuation of the story that answered many questions from the 1st game. It also provided ample fuel for speculation and discussion, similar to the ending of the original. Having played both games back to back, I can say that they actually match up well and are directly intertwined in fundamental ways that I found satisfying as a longtime fan of the original.

I took my time with this game and it is a BIG game. The amount of content provided blows away almost all similarly priced games and delivers an exceptional amount of value for $60. Coming from someone who thought Uncharted 4 was a blast but ended too suddenly, the scope of the Last of us 2 allows you to fully immerse yourself in the world. The documents and collectibles available in the game are actually fun and engaging this time around, and seriously help to flesh out the story and add atmosphere. Collectibles were a major disappointment in the original and I was thrilled to see Naughty Dog put much more effort into them this time around. I enjoyed exploring every single zone to fully take in the visuals and discover hidden secrets, and it felt rewarding to do so.

Speaking of visuals, this game is stunning from beginning to end. It is by far the best looking game of this generation and even people who hate the story can't help but praise how damn good this thing looks. The frame rate remains silky smooth even in the largest open spaces and during frantic combat. Not once did a technical glitch break my immersion and I always felt fully in control of my character. The variety of locations and color pallets will make you stare in awe, sometimes for minutes at a time.

After replaying the original, it was clear to me that combat needed improvement. Part 2 improves upon the original's game play in almost every way. It is tense and brutal, but also carries with it a huge amount of variety and player choice. Your character has much more momentum and when your stealth plan breaks down, you can sprint and hide and ambush even in the heat of battle. The game also features an incredibly good checkpoint system that consistently updates your progress mid encounter, but that will also allow you to completely start over if you wish. Restarting from your checkpoint takes less than 2 seconds which allows you to easily rectify a missed headshot that alerts the whole camp. I found myself using this feature often so that I could play through each encounter in a way that felt tactical and satisfying. I never lost more than a minute of progress and load times were basically nonexistent. Although the combat is some of the most realistically portrayed violence in a game, it never felt too over the top or in bad taste. If you shoot someone in the head they die instantly; if you shoot someone in the neck it is also an instant kill but they sputter and choke for a few seconds before falling silent. It added a certain realism but never made me feel uncomfortable. I actually had fun much the same way adults enjoy a good R rated movie such as gladiator for realistically portraying violence.

Finally to address the story. It is complicated, non-linear and gives the player many opportunities to draw their own conclusions and make their own judgments. I must mention that this ambiguity was openly praised in the original, and what made the original's ending so good is undeniably present in part 2. Personally I found the story mature, heartfelt, tragic, and believable. I didn't cry the way I did during parts of the original, but I very much enjoyed the expertly crafted tale. You will not end this game with a feeling of "OMG I have chills" such as I felt upon completing Bioshock Infinite or the original TLOU. Instead this story is very much a sum of its parts that leaves you pondering and recalling details long after completion. I felt a little let down by the end, but the longer I think about it, the more everything seems to tie together into a masterful work of art. It is not perfect, but is so carefully crafted that I don't feel in a position to point out a specific change or flaw, for doing so would potentially ruin the cohesive tale and emotional impact of the game.

In conclusion, very few games match the high bar Naughty Dog has set. If you absolutely hate exploration, looting, 3rd person shooting and complicated stories I can understand a 8/10 review.

At a technical and playable level it is achiever, however all its mechanics and impressive graphics only exist to give depth to its narrative and history, and this is absolute rubbish, not because they have inclusive characters, that part is perfectly fine, I am a big fan of sagas as mass effect, which have a lot of inclusive characters, the problem, I insist, is that their argument is simply bad

This game will make you angry. Why wouldn't it? Playing the role of the one person who you hate the most is utterly infuriating.

I don't forgive Abby for what she's done, but I can understand it. I can understand and sympathize with every character in this game. No one is perfect, including us. I believe that the people rating this poorly are not (yet) willing to see how it's telling a story of loss and despair, something that will make you look at yourself and see how an eye for an eye blinds the world. It's a sickening thing to see your greatest adversary as something more than what you want them to be. It's sickening to see them smile, laugh, and crack jokes. You don't want them to pet dogs, you don't want them to have friends and goals, you don't even want them to pet dogs. Along with everyone, I absolutely hated Abby and playing with her. However, after meeting Lev and Yara, I had a change of heart- as did Abby. There's no way to be alright with the entire situation. I didn't like her but I respected her actions with everything that's happened. Mel already said it; "You were always an **** (to Abby)." It's only through the journey with Lev and Yara that she redeemed herself in my eyes.

Everyone is just living their own life. I hope you, dear reader, can see it this way too. If TLOU was reversed with Ellie in Abby's shoes, I believe everyone would be okay with her murdering the **** out of whoever killed Joel in the first game. Everyone wants revenge in this game, and it's proven to be futile.

Ellie's struggle with Joel's death deals with loss and forgiveness. Forgiving Joel isn't hard to do after the events of Part I. Forgiving herself for not being able to reconcile with Joel is another layer on top of her guilt... what fuels her in a quest of vengeance. It ultimately consumed everything.

I won't give it a 10 because of how stressing the story was; it's going to be hard to replay this, not gonna lie.

Pero por esto tampoco es merecedor de un 4 para abajo como muchos lo puntean, si la historia deja mucho que desear pero no hay que negar que mejoró un monton graficamente y jugablemente dando mecanicas interesantes. The game is solid. The gameplay is ultra smooth and fun, and the addition of prone stealth and proximity mines was very welcome. Not going to lie, the jarring experience of switching to Abby bugged me (both bc she’s been the antagonist for 14 hours-ish and bc her character progression starts completely over in terms of ability unlocks). To say that was a emotional ride would be an understatement.

The payoff for playing as Abby came in the parallels between her and Joel, from craftable shivs required for stealth kills to the act of turning on her allies to save a child. I felt like she learned something about how her actions affected others.

The ending was tragic. No other words really. But overall, the game was a very enjoyable experience and well-made.

I would also like to point out that this is a legit review and my honest opinion. I'm a huge fan of the first game. Some people are giving this game a bad review because they think it is overly politic - that is complete BS. The game has no politic agenda at all. If you somehow have a problem with that the game contains characters like muscular women or LGBTQ people that exist in our society - you seriously need to change your backwards mentality.

My problem with the game (and many others as well) is not political, it's the storytelling and character development. Early in the game, an event happens that forces Ellie to go to Seattle on a quest for revenge. The plot is nothing spectacular per se, but it could’ve still been interesting for character development nonetheless. Following Ellie on her quest for revenge is in the beginning mostly enjoyable, but eventually leads to a point where you no longer can understand her actions and even start questioning how they make sense. About halfway through the game, there is a sudden change of perspective, essentially one big side mission that is there to provide the player a better understanding of the context and the characters that have been introduced with the sequel. One of the primary reasons for this sequence is to let players develop empathy for some of the main characters that this new story involves. This simply does not work. At all. At this point in the story, most of these characters have so far been completely despicable without showing any redeeming qualities, and there is little interest nor motivation to see any of the reasons that lie behind this behavior. The explanations we are given fail to justify the actions and the way these explanations are delivered is just so poor and unsatisfying that it came to a point where I no longer wanted to finish it. There are even moments during this part where I put down the controller because I didn’t want to push the button prompts and see what happened next. Hoping it would pay off in the end, I kept playing, but I never got to a point where I felt compassion or truly understood the actions that were made by some characters. The story desperately tries to create empathy for them, but the reasons behind their actions and the “redemption arcs” they go through just leave zero impact on you when you already know what they’ve done. Maybe it would’ve been more impactful if they instead had focused on introducing the backstory of characters before certain important events took place. But I think it essentially boils down to the small amount of backstory we get, and how this small amount is somehow supposed to justify their questionable decisions. While many of Ellie’s decisions definitely are questionable as well, I still can’t help but feel compassion for her. After all, I grew up with her in the first game. The new characters haven’t had this development, and from the start they leave me feeling disconnected. While there are some interesting moments during this later half of the game, for the most part it is just a drag that you want to get through as fast as possible to see if it will pay off. Unfortunately it never does, as the ending at least for me was incredibly unsatisfactory.

Overall, the game has you for the most part either feeling miserable or angry. It is extremely violent, to the point that it just becomes unnecessary and too much. While there are a few moments that are truly uplifting, they are indeed few. In the beginning I actually felt emotionally moved by many of the events that occurred in the game. But it came to a point where I just stopped caring and even started laughing. While a story of constant misery does seem plausible in a post-apocalyptic world, it also inevitably leaves you feeling void and dissatisfied. This is something that the first game managed to deal with so well – there were both moments of tears but also moments of joy and more importantly, hope. This game extinguished any hope that was created from the first one, and leaves you with only hopelessness.

Lastly, I will mention that the game really succeeds at creating an atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic world. Environments are absolutely stunning and the soundtrack is beautiful. It is easily one of the most visually impressive games out there today. Gameplay is very similar to the first one, it has a few minor improvements but is far from innovative. At least to me, the gameplay was never the biggest strength of this series, the storytelling was. But the story in this game is a letdown and completely butchers everything that I fell in love with in the first game while immensely failing at introducing and explaining any of the new characters. All in all, if you loved the first game – I’m sad to say you’re probably better off just pretending this game never existed.

There is a rather large lull in the halfway point of the game. As far as the narrative, this lull makes a lot of sense. As far as creating and maintaining interest in playing, this lull is almost destructive. If you can push past the halfway point, you will be rewarded.
