The death of joel it was sad, but completely necessary for the revenge feeling. If the game give you so much hate is because the immersion in the feelings are better than we expected. Thats why this game diserved 20 point of 10.

Congratulations naughty dogs for crating the best game of the year, even the decade.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why would you do this to us. This is what happens when you make the characters fit the plot and not vice-versa, you know, when it works. Joel turns into an absolutely idiotic character irecognizable from the last game; he helps a damsel in distress, he & Tommy say their names in front of a stranger twice, which, Joel, knowing what he did, would never do, and then Tommy & him tell them where they currently reside and the former thinks it's a good idea to let them re-stock their supplies. May I remind you that these two are badass survivors who know their fair share of knowledge of the world around them & the people that live in it. Joel completely called a bluff on the ambush that he & Ellie were being a victim of with only a few visual cues. I think this encapsulates all of the Last of Us Pt. 2's plot devices, which fall victim on the same kind of mistakes.

For a game so well designed in other departments (level design is amazing, specially the underwater-sniper-Abby vs. Tommy scene; graphically, the game is stunning, even if we're getting into uncanny valley real fast), the game has some serious plot holes and a story that leaves you a really bad taste, not for the death of your favorite characters, but because it's poorly structured. Clearly, the Abby section should've been first, in order to empathize with her & her reasons.

I don't wanna extend myself so much, but something I haven't heard so much hate about is the gameplay, which deserves it's criticisms. When you don't improve onto an overall gameplay mechanic which was stablished in 2013, there's something wrong with your game. You know what games happened between then & 2020? Metal Gear Solid V, Dishonored 2, etc. And yes, I'm focusing mainly on examples made by stealth games because TLOU2 is, primarely, a stealth game. These games, too, know how to spice things up with clever level design, which I think TLOU2 has, and clever and revolutionary game mechanics, which this game lacks, and it shows in the repetitive gameplay.

The last thing to point out by my part is that the game punishes you and makes you feel like "The Bad Guy" playing as Ellie, at least, while giving you no alternative option for murder. Joel's death is shown almost on it's entirety, with all it's gore & graphic detail involved, while, when Ellie catches Nora, it's not shown at all how she massacres her, when it would've been satisfactory for the main audience. When your game portrays a message of "REVENGE = BAD" you should stick to it and give the player some valid options to make the least killing possible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok before all of the people come at me saying you didn’t finish the game!!!! I did I am actually only 2 trophies from the platinum. Sadly all I can say is that I liked the gameplay as for the story *sigh* I can only say it wasn’t for me. The pacing for me was all over the place. And making me play as Abby for so long it just made me hate her even more and even her father. Honestly Mel said it best when she told Abby “you’re a piece of **** Abby.” And the ending could have been meaningful if it wasn’t so damn floppy floppy. Having Ellie go from giving up chasing Abby and living happy with Dina and JJ. To Tommy guilt tripping her into chasing her down again. To her rescuing her and Lev. The then right before saying they have to do this to then right about to kill her saying nah **** it. It flipped sooo much it was just wrong. The story did have some good moments but they were all overshadowed by making us play as a character at least I could not get behind, like Owen did lol. I tried to like her too I just couldn’t. Sadly gameplay is good but not good enough to get a better score and overshadow how bad the story was. I hope I have enlightened people as to why I couldn’t give it a better score. Have a great week everyone :) Expand

But as a work of art it is a triumph, both in terms of its development from a simple snow western into a doubled edged revenge plot and involving characters with backgrounds different from your typical straight white male protag. It's a significant achievement, and I would never in a million years have expected a narrative to involve more marginalized people in such a normalized way. It's refreshing, as it is cruel and visceral.

Game play wise it remained as tight if not tighter than the first, though with its length, it did begin to test my patience. But with it all most likely being the end of this IP, I really don't mind being in the world for as long as possible. Also it made me cry twice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The thing about this game, is that it shows you both sides of a story. We love Joel so dearly, it is hard to see past the anger and the thirst for vengeance to kill Abby. Throughout the game we see two journeys, both filled with loosing their loved ones. At first it is indeed normal to hate Abby, but being in her bones, like with Ellie, we understand the choices she made. “An eye for an eye and the world will go blind” never said better. I think Ellie is us, until the very end. It is hard for us to see the truth and the right thing to do, because we’re so hurt, that how could we not seek vengeance. But again, Joel killed Abby’s dad, what would we have done if someone we loved was killed by someone else? This game shows us, as Neil highlights, the cycle of violence, and vengeance. It’ll never end, that’s why this game is so powerful. There’s no good character or bad character in this story (except a few characters such as ehem Isaac and infected), just the never ending loop, of wanting to make someone suffer the way they made us suffer, without considering other people’s stories or backgrounds. This is so important in today’s society, we blame someone without knowing their reasons. This game is not for closed minded people, but I think that’s why it was made, to open our eyes. Expand

What a bad story, it doesn't have anything good, just the graphics and some gameplay, but everyrhing else is just trash. Why you killed joel in that way. I’m going to steer clear of whether or not I loved or hated it, but I will offer some perspective on why I think the themes were important.

I see this game from a perspective of someone that has had to sympathize with a lot of different people that were very unsympathetic.

The last of us isn’t about the characters from TLOU1 (Complaints about Tess? Didn’t think so). That’s the problem with complaining about any given character being in the spotlight.

The story is about the last of humanity. By changing the narrative to a different set of characters, it moves the story along. By tying Ellie in, there is some continuity but the problem is that if all you came for is the hope of continuing to use the same characters over and over, it remains forever stagnant.

We don’t own this world, and there are lots of stories to be told about what humanity would be doing fending for itself. In such a hard climate, we have to remember that each character could stumble and fall at any moment and meet a very inglorious death. That is the reality of such a world. Joel made a lot of people meet those ends in part 1. No tears for those people? Didn’t think so.

We praised George R. R. Martin’s book series for being fair and equal to the characters, no matter how much you loved them. Goodness was rewarded with nothing. Don’t get me wrong, if I want to just see “life” happen, I can look outside my window - so I want this game version of “life” to be compelling and dramatic. I want there to be surprising plot twists and turns. I want there to be epic consequences to actions. Sometimes I want what I think to be the “bad” guy to not get their just desserts. If there is going to be unfairness, I just want there to be a good reason to go there. And to tell you the truth, I think there was a good reason for lots of unfairness here.

But the lesson I think that was learned here was that lots of times in both games, characters had the option to be less cruel, to turn around and go home. Joel could have not taken Ellie across the country in part 1 (remember, he was smuggling her). Ellie didn’t have to go on her journey. The mysterious woman didn’t, either. The consequences for their journeys, for doggedly pursuing those goals was to learn a harsh lesson - you take risks and pay for them. Turns out the first game had a MUCH longer ending. We just had to wait 7 years to see it.

If it upsets you that good guys can do bad things, or that bad guys can have sympathetic sides, life is going to be upsetting. Bad guys perform kind acts, good people meet unjust ends. That’s... life. TLOU1 started with a stab to the heart. The world isn’t meant to be fair, and justice is a floating concept. That is what The Last of Us as a series is meant to represent. Humanity as a whole is many stories. When you zoom out, we talk about things like “countries” and “society” as if any of those things actually mean anything at all, but when you zoom in with a microscope it gets downright complicated.

Each person you pass by on the streets got up in the morning, put on clothes, had thoughts, had emotions, and had a story before going by you for thirty seconds. If they bump into you or were rude to you, you might think of them as a terrible person - but they think the same of you - and you then forget them. Ships passing in the night. But they forget that you too had a story that led you to them.

If a main character wants justifiable revenge, well, that’s easy to sympathize with. And don’t get me wrong, I root for lovable main characters. Don’t we all?

But the original Last of Us was such a good game because we rooted for Joel in spite of his evil past. And Joel’s selfish actions are easy to forget because his story is one of redemption. In doing what he wants, we forget that his actions change the world around him, for better or worse. We forget that before we met him, he was a different man. We only see him in the original for 30 hours, and the reality is that he was a terrible person for 20 years. We sympathize with him because he shows affection for a little girl and with that we rationalize what the story tells us of the evil he wrought.

Don’t get me wrong, I am selfish. I would make the same choices. You are meant to feel as he did. And you are meant to be confused in TLOU2. Life is confusing.

I don’t think that The Last of Us Part II is meant to teach any great lessons. It’s just stories about the way humanity is, tales about what we are when we pursue vengeance sub happiness.

And we watch the full story’s journey, learning about blurred lines of good and evil, learning to sympathize and possible to feel a little queasy with that sympathy, maybe we should just realize that people aren’t “good” or “evil.” They’re just people.

If you decided before you pick up the game that you hate the characters, grow up.

It is pretty obvious to me that The Last Of Us Part II in order to follow a very specific political agenda, loses elements which made the first game so unique and playable. Tue Smart characters have begun acting dumb, plot twists that just make playing the game unbearable have been added and at the end of the dah this so called "masterpiece" concludes to a very generic message that most of the people plahing it, already hve in mind.
