They planned something completly different and ended up with this somehow, probably because they lost 70% of their employees and some idiot wanted to push his own ideas.

joel wasnt meant to die that early, there was clearly a journey planned for both him and ellie, but they removed it, also abby wasnt supposed to look like that at all, if you watch the old trailers, she didnt have that kind of steroidblasted body, which doesnt even make sense for that kind of world by the way.

ND took a huge risk with abby and completly failed, she is not likeable at all and they **** try so hard to make you like her.
The game thinks the best time to tell Abbies backstory is when the game hits its climax, like what the ****

Im just so pissed that this game could have become great, but because of some idiotic influence it became the biggest upset ever.

I just finished the game, the graphics were amazing and the gameplay was good but the story was bad. These agendas were forced and the game was more of a shock value, the ending did not pay off.

I put 4 points for this game, I can’t put a higher one. The gameplay, visualization, musical accompaniment and more at the level, as well as facial animations.
But the plot greatly disappointed. The beginning of the story was addictive and full of emotions, and then it was completely boredom, although the end turned out pretty good for me.

Worst part is that You are forced to play through hours of gameplay as a character you are not interested in at all just to get to play as Ellie. You get through all that just to be dissapointed with the ending that makes no sense. TLoU part 2 looks amazing, the music and animations are amazing, the combat is improved a lot but the most important part of the game is the story and unfortunately story is the weakest part of the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not THAT BAD! But also, not THAT GOOD!

You have to look at the context of me giving this game a 4/10 ! probably this game is a GOTY nominee, as a stand alone game it's pretty amazing. But this is not a stand alone game, this is the sequel of one of the greatest games ever created, and in that context it's a dissapointment. Killing off a major leading character sometimes payoff with a dramatic effect that make us sad and will make us cry, and thats good, even if the death is gruesome and violent. This is not one of those times! i felt nothing when Joel died! and this is WRONG! it was poorly handled and it took me out of the game for the next few hours playing it. When the game finally picked up for me is when I - as Elly- was hunting down the group that involved in killing Joel - mainly Abby- and I was LOVING it! Until, the game forced me to play as Abby in literally the full second half of the game! i believe I played as Abby the same amount of Elly. Except that i didn't care one pit about her! and here where the writing really fall off for me. Making the player spend hours and hours playing as the protagonist killer is not going to pull us to her side, insted it pushes us away further! I really understood where the creative team of Naughty Dog are going for here and why they made their decisions the way they were, and I still find it not a compelling way to tell the story they wanted to tell. In the end of the game, I left with one feeling I really don't think Naughty Dog were looking for, and that feeling was "Whatever!"

I played The Last of US (Part One) too many times, and I enjoyed it every single playthrough. Because I knew that the outcome of the game is something special, and I'm playing for a purpose I'm invested in. The last of Us Part II in the other hand, not so much! I don't see myself replaying it ever again because it is an average "meh" game. I really couldn't care less about Abby's adventure, and the outcome of the story is flat that make the experience not worth the second playthrough.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can only give this game a 4 because I only enjoyed 4/10 of this game. I loved playing as Ellie. It was fun exploring her life in Jackson and her relationship with Joel. Also her post life with Dina was amazing until it was not. I understand why they ended Joel, but the character should have not been Abby.

Abby- Unlikeable. A Man? Her backstory was worthless and made me care even less for her.

I don't give a flying **** about Abby. I still don't know if she is a man or a Woman. I think she is actually a woman (Jury is still out). She can only bench 105 pounds and she either took it in ass with no lube after a long day of fighting or she does have a Vag. Abby was so ****ing distracting that she ruined the game.

The Shamalama Ding Dong twist with Lev actually being a girl was... unnecessary and more distracting. They tricked everyone into calling Lev a "him" if you have a Vagina you are a female. If you have a Penis you are a male. Lev or real name Lilly is a girl. It is science.

The gameplay was fun I beat it on survivor and was challenged. Aiming was ****ing awful sometimes with direct hits that missed the target.

The ending was dumb. She let Abby live to set up TLOU3. Abby probably ran off the Catalina Island to rejoin the fireflies. This is now a cash grab for Naughty Dog. There will more than likely be a TLOU3. It was the equivalent to Mario killing all the Goombas and getting to Bowser and not beating him or letting him go and saying **** Peach.

My fan theory... they could have brought in Ellies Mom or Dad find out what caused the infection. They might do that with TLOU3, but I am over this **** show of a game.

If Abby was different it could have been redeemable. I just did not give a **** about her or her crew. I wanted them all dead. I Still want Abby dead.

Cons: Oh boy, where to start: 1. Story- i get what ND is trying to say with this plot, revenge doesn't lead anywhere, but they sort of made a game that is entirely subjective-you either like it or you hate it. I hated it.
Next level violence, feeling of misery and regret of buying the game. The new characters are unlikeable, bland or just boring, repetitive gameplay and dumb UI. Giant plotholes, unoriginality, disrespect towards the OG tlou. I don't know why ND didn't make a game that we would all enjoy but instead chose to have this mess with plot like a reddit SJW fanfiction. Don't buy. Seriously.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a massive fan of the 1st game and someone who has already beaten this one. I feel the need to tell you not to buy this one. I was only spoiled the fact that Abby kills Joel so I was coming at most of the game with an open mind. So for the first 90% of the game which includes the Jackson, Seattle, and flashback portions of the game I was actually really enjoying it. I thought the combat encounters were great and the UI in the game was definitely improved from the first one. I even started to believe it might be one of my favorite games of all time. However, all that changed when I saw the ending. The fact that you let Abby off the hook and then go home to find Dina and JJ gone (which most of us probably saw coming) made me feel cheated. Then to go upstairs and get an awful cutscene with Joel where Ellie almost (keyword almost) forgives him for the events that took place at the end of the 1st game. I understand what naughty dog was going for with the scene but I just think they could’ve done it better. And it’s the rat king boss fight and the entire length of the game in total that makes me question whether I want to play it again or not. It took me roughly 20 hours to beat this game keep in mind that I wasn’t even trying to get all the collectibles, but it only takes the average gamer around 13 hours to get most if not all collectibles & upgrades in the first game while also completing the story (depending on difficulty and gaming experience). Usually I have no problem with a long game but when the ending just throws away the first 2 acts of a game it makes it feel totally pointless. And it irritates me that I waited 7 years for a big cliffhanger (if that’s what you would call it) for the next game (if they even make one) which will at minimum come out in probably another 7 years. So in summary don’t buy this game unless you want to be heartbroken that you won’t be able to see the rest of Ellie’s story for a long time. (Also if you don’t like kissing scenes don’t buy it, because there’s a lot of them). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Take it as you will - I wasn't a huge fan of the first game but I at least respected the story and liked the characters. I am a huge fan of the Uncharted series, which is the only reason I picked up this game or the last one. I'm a man of few words, but here goes.

If the cycle of revenge is so bad, why does Abby get to brutally murder Joel without remorse, and get to continue about her life as if nothing happened? Why doesn't Ellie get the same satisfaction? Abby even took away Ellie's ability to play the guitar, taking away what was arguably the only everlasting gift Joel gave her, and yet neither Ellie nor the player is given any agency whatsoever in deciding Abby's fate. Naughty Dog should be ashamed of themselves. You have wronged every player and I hope you realise Neil Druckmann is a pathetic excuse for a director. I will not be playing another one of your games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I tried to like this game.
Even through the leaks, I still held hope that maybe the context from the rest of the game would smooth things over but they didn’t. Ellie feels like a shell of a character I loved. Any other character has some bipolar disorder since they change from being violent aggressive **** to your run of the mill average joe who cracks good jokes and wouldn’t hurt a fly. The story being told from Ellie’s perspective to Abbys gave so much whiplash I ended up feeling very indifferent at the end. I honestly don’t know what the whole point of this game was.
Characters make obvious stupid decisions or are completely out of character just when we start to learn about them. And some are barely in the story at all that I feel nothing when they get killed off.
Major sections of playtime feel empty since the character dialogue is either uninteresting or not there at all. Well except for the parts with Abby, who feels like she’s treated more as the lead protagonist than Ellie who’s on the cover of the game.
I will say the gameplay has improved, if only slightly. The AI seems better and the level design more detailed and bigger. However it still falls flat when I can just run into a one door room and wait for enemies to line up for me to kill them. The dodge button still doesn’t feel right after 30hrs playing. At least the gunplay feels better. That’s about as much positives I can give this game besides the usual “It’s pretty and look how animated and lively Ellie moves”. Even though the characters are terrible I can at least say that the actors gave it their all. Especially with Lev and Yaras actors who surprised me the most.
I waited 5 years after playing The last of us part 1 to completion to see what Ellie and Joel would do next. I admittedly was one of those people who said they preferred the first game to be a standalone game but I would lie to you if said I hadn’t screamed tears of joy learn there would be a sequel. 3 years of waiting learning all I could going to YouTube and twitter to listen to theories and speculations on what would happen. All that for it to be leaked and for me to see what the game truly is. For me to still buy it and feel even worse playing it.
I never thought I would feel so empty playing a game before, ironically I hated the game in its entirety more than when I saw the leaks.
What ever Naughty Dog does next I don’t care. They wasted my time for 3 years and 30+hrs for me to feel empty in the end, not angry(at least anymore), not sad(never cried once) not even at least satisfied. To whomever is reading this thank you for listening to my ramblings and please understand I tried to give this game a chance but if this is what you are looking for as your final decision to buy the game, I suggest skipping this one and saving your money for something else by watching it on YouTube. And if you still think I’m one of the review bombers and still are going to buy the game at least wait until the game is on sale beforehand.
P.S. Falsely advertising this being Joel and Ellie’s story is disrespectful to your fan base and advertising that Joel is in the game longer than he actually is by swapping characters and models is cheap and disgusting way for people to buy your product

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly, there are a few good points within the game, as to why I didn't rate it below a 4. Here is a list with some details.

    -Game mechanics.

Since the last game was released, the mechanics of the game have improved drastically. I find it much more easier to aim, craft or even throw a brick/bottle. The jumping and climbing manoeuvres were quite simplistic also. The only thing I can add to that (which is a negative, but because its only small I will include it in the positives) is that the dodging mechanic (L1) is strangely difficult. I found myself continuously receiving damage even though I was dodging perfectly to an upcoming attack. Something that should have been used as the circle button mechanic and not the running button.

    -Animation

Not only have the facial animation during cutscenes and the gameplay animation improved since the last game, but also the way the environment moves around you. I felt fully indulged within the environment, almost like I was there throughout the entire gameplay. The lighting really brought the dark, dim and bright moments to life.

Those were my only good points. The past seven years they have spent on making this game was wholesomely based on those points, and not the story. Here are my bad points.

-Not because Joel died, but HOW he was brutally murdered.

As Joel was the main character in the first game, I felt saddened by the way they killed him. The way Manny spat on his beaten up corpse really pissed me off. I can understand if Abby herself killed Joel in her own way, without other people forcing him to struggle free of their grasp, but I just found it....well, dirty. She couldn't even come up with a well made plan on how to commit the act. It was just pure luck that she ran into him.

-Making Ellie look like the villain

Ellie throughout the entire game is of course, on a rough road heading straight for revenge. Willing to do anything, and kill just about anyone that gets in her way. But throughout this path, she makes some decisions that make us question who she really is as a person. We can all say the worst thing she did was murder Mel, who was pregnant at the time. None of us could see that she was pregnant, even Ellie was shocked at the murder that she committed. She isn't a BAD person. She made some quick moment decisions which were taken out of her hands, and if the tables were turned, we would all do the exact same thing. (Nice try, Naughty Dog)

-Trying to make us feel Sympathy for Abby

During the play-through of Abby, different events occur which try to make us think that she isn't the bad person we all think she may be. She may in fact be a caring person, but that doesn't mean she can't be a horrible one either. It makes us look at past events from her point of view, especially when her father died, and we can all obviously see why she did what she did to Joel. But that doesn't take away the fact that she killed him. Joel, who was the protagonist of the first game, the character we all came to love, murdered. Because of the acts he had to commit, in order to save his loved ones life. I quite frankly didn't care that Abby's father died and I will never come to like her character for what she did.

-Back and fourth revenge/the story ending.

This story was nothing more than a 'look, this is what revenge does to you. Revenge is bad, DON'T DO IT' and I feel like the past 7 years should have been concentrating more on the story-line and not the mechanics of the game. We didn't need a story on revenge, we've seen it. we've played it. And i'm sure at one point in all our lives, we have had some kind of revenge too. We didn't need a video gaming explaining what specific actions can do to the human mind. Which brings me to the ending. Ellie at the start of Seattle (Just after the events of Seattle day three) spent all that time on tracking Abby. Killing absolutely anything (I'm sorry Alice) and anyone just to make it possible. After being horrifically beaten to a pulp by Abby, she moves from Jackson with Dina and her son. Spending months on end just dwelling on Joel's death. Even having PTSD moments. So at the end, when she had Abby in her grasp, she sets her free. For what reason? Did she forgive her for what she had done? Was this whole game for nothing? Me, as the player, who desperately wanted nothing more than revenge for Joel, couldn't even get that. From start, to finish, the endgame was pointless. It was a means to an end. Where does this take the third installment for the game (that's even if they bother now) with such a pointless cliffhanger?

My 3 star rating is for the game mechanics. The last star is merely for the story-line. What a disappointment. I expected better for 7 years of hard work.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a very big fan of the story of the first game, i have to say that not only i feel insulted, but also disappointed. Story is a very cliché revenge story, where you are forced to kill people you don’t care about and them forced to feel bad about, even when again, these characters are so disposable, that you cant feel any emotion when they die. Gameplay is the same from the first game, with a few new puzzles, plus the old ones that were already stale. After 7 years, the AI is just as dumb, they still do the same kind of patrolling, and you can still strangle someone while they scream next to another npc that doesnt notice. The soundtrack and the graphics are amazing, and those are what gives this review the positive points. Santaolalla’s soundtrack is outstanding. The game relies too much on the story, so much that some sections are just walk from point a to point b, watch a cutscene, get the same encounter where you can sneak against some enemies, and repeat. For a character that doesnt forget a guy that insults her and giver her free food in the apocalypse, it doesn't lake sense that she would forgive the person who killed her father figure. Abby’s sections feel forced and you never get to feel sad for her. You already saw her father’s death as a consequence for a tough decision, and again, every time you play as her, you just want the section to end. The flashbacks are the best and i would prefer to just play those instead of the rest of the story. Expand

The graphis are amazing and possibly the best this generation of PS4. The gameplay is serviceable, but not much of an upgrade from a 7 year old game.

The real problem is the story. After setting this I.P. so perfectly as a story of loss, redemption, survival, and hope, they decide to follow the tired revenge-furled hate fest. It becomes shallow, with only a few decent past cut-scenes to redeem a little bit. The choice to try and humanize Abbie and her party was unnecessary. We all understand that any other humans in this world have their own lives and are just trying to survive.being forced to play as the opposing side is also a poor choice. It becomes 10hrs of useless distraction that could have been spent on building up Joel and Ellie a little and making his death feel like it had more value. The end also becomes a joke and completely unsatisfying. Imagine chasing down any antagonist for a while game, killing all their allies, then deciding, nevermind.

The game feels like a sad mix of Wking Dead for shock factor, Star Wars for ruining established characters, and GoT season 8 for failing to satisfy at the end.

This is easily the biggest disappointment in gaming in recent history.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all please let me point out i personally regard The Last of Us as the greatest single player game ever made.

I was 24 when i first played it and i never expected a video game to have such an emotional impact. Sarah's death in the prologue, Tess's sacrifice in Boston, Sam and Henry's deaths, the game had me hooked with hard hitting story moments. At the core of the first game we have the relationship that develops between Ellie and Joel, this is key to everything that is good about the game, the experiences they go through shape that relationship and develop the characters.

Marketing trailers for the second game strongly suggest we will see that relationship explored further and tested. The closing scene of the first game we see Ellie question Joel about the events at Salt Lake City and its suggested she thinks he is lying.

Ultimately Joel is killed at the hands of a new playable Character (Abby) whom we have no attachment with what so ever just 90 minutes into the game. Now i have no problem with main characters dieing, in a post apocalyptic back-drop one could say it should be expected but the way Joel's death played out left me feeling nothing, it felt ham fisted and forced through for shock value and to set the wheel in motion for what would follow, a story of vengeance.

Why was it ham fisted and force you say?

Joel and Tommy have both survived post out break for at this point 24/25+ years and yet we are supposed to believe they go like willing cattle to the slaughterhouse. Rule number one in any post apocalyptic world, do not trust strangers, particularly groups, better the enemy you know, in this case the infected.

Naughty Dog did not want this game to be another Joel and Ellie adventure, so they got desperate in forcing an unbelievable situation in which Joel died and Ellie had the path laid before her to go and seek revenge.

So Ellie & Dina set out for Seattle to find the people that murdered Joe and kill them, i feel that at this point the relationship develop between Ellie and Dina essentially stops. Ellie fights through countless enemies slaying them as she goes into what becomes a quest to find and murder Abby along with hopefully some answers.

The cinema showdown, acts as a Cliffhanger. Jesse dies but given how little development he got it feels inconsequential to the story. I hate Cliffhangers and this one feels all the more worse as you are forced to play 6-8 hours as Abby, who is essentially a female terminator.

I get what Naughty Dog are trying to do, there is always another side and perspective to every story but i choose my side 7 years go with the emotional attachment i formed with Ellie and Joel despite their flaws and no matter how many hours you force me play as Abby do gooder it will not change the outcome i desire for her and that is a brutal death at the hands of Ellie.

If the Abby/Yara/Lev section of the game had been a standalone separate story from the Joel and Ellie story, i would have enjoyed it alot more given more character development.

Cinema Cliffhanger, Abby in full search and destroy mode after finding pretty much everyone else involved in Joel's murder is now dead. I like the way Nora died tbh that was a minor highlight.

Jesse dead, Tommy shot and down, we are forced to hunt Ellie as Abby, this almost made me throw up the game did not revert back to Ellie being the playable character at this point. Thankfully Lev shut downs the Terminator before she can execute Dina/Ellie/Tommy, given her little develop and her friends deaths, it would of been in her character to kill all 3.

Farmhouse act 1, at this point i thought the game was going to end, it would of been weak (Abby essentially letting her go once more) but with Ellie sat on the tractor overlooking the horizon, with JJ in her arms the credits could have rolled with a reasonably happy but unfulfilling ending.

Ultimately Ellie is still haunted by Joel's murder, Tommy turns up alive thankfully but semi crippled to set the next step of the game in motion. Abby is in Santa Barbara. Following a short play as Abby both Abby & Lev are captured by another group known as the Rattlers and taken prisoner/slave.

Ellie leaves Dina/JJ to go hunt Abby down, despite Dina's warning she will not wait for her to return. At this point i was just glad to be back playing Ellie, after so much time being forced to play as Abby.

Ellie slays countless to get to a somewhat reduced Abby who has been left to die, after saving her life, forces her into a fight she does not want for once. Beats her only to let her live.

The ending shows Ellie's sense of loss, Joel dead, Dina and JJ gone, she cant even play Guitar anymore after loosing two fingers. A brief flashback shows Ellie wanted to forgive Joel for his lie, the game should have ended on this scene, which is by far the most emotionally powerful moment in the entire game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's heartbreaking to give this game such a low score considering how much I adored the first one however it's unfortunately what it deserves. The graphics are stunning as expected for a 2020 game, I found myself in awe walking around the different sets, the acting for the most part is phenomenal, the gameplay is great (most of it was recycled from the original game so really nothing new other than the fact that Ellie is faster and less bulky than Joel was making room for some interesting mechanics), the music was breathtaking, the story and character writing however was not. Naughty Dog completely ruined this games potential when they wrote such unlikable characters, I found myself being bored during most dialogue and just switched off to admire the graphics. To give such a beloved character an awful excuse of a 'send off' for no reason other than to fuel a revenge story is insulting to fans of the original game and by the 6th hour into the game it doesn't even feel like you're out for revenge it just feels like Ellie's on a rampage and Joel's death is just the best excuse they could come up with and to then be forced into playing as the character that killed him & expecting us to care for her is just rubbing salt on the wound. ND's handling of trailers was absolutely disgusting I avoided spoilers like my life depended on it and bought the game thinking I was going to get an Ellie focused story (a character who I loved) to build upon her character with Joel as one of the possible side characters (I wouldn't have even been mad if they killed him off at some point respectfully), instead she's been written as an uncharismatic teenager that nobody likes, her personality has completely changed and I guess you could read into it and say it's just a part of growing up in an apocalyptic universe however this is never explained. Joel goes from a careful, smart survivor to someone who willingly tells a group of armed strangers his name regardless of the reputation he built in the events of the first game. Scenes are ridiculously violent for the sake of being violent to a point where I personally had so much anxiety I had to stop playing for a while. If there's one good thing about the story & characters I suppose you could stretch and say it's ok at diversity, there's a handful of lgbtq+ characters & different ethnicities however it's not GREAT representation, scenes feel forced and one of the characters even plays into a harmful stereotype for bi people so take it or leave it. Overall The Last of Us 2 just feels like Naughty Dog ruined a perfect story with incredibly enjoyable characters just for the sake of making a sequel and getting more money, as a long time fan I will definitely not be buying anymore products from them. The score of 4 is based purely on graphics and gameplay but it's definitely not worth your money.
It's upsetting to see reviewers blindly hating this game JUST because it features lgbt people at the center of it. However it's equally as frustrating to see people blindly supporting it, at the end of the day the story is just simply an injustice to the original game that so many people love and that's all it really boils down to.

I wanted to see how Ellie had changed in the time since we last saw her and the first few hours give me that and I wish the game had stayed with her but instead the rug is pulled out from under us and we are forced to play as an antagonist that we as Ellie are supposed to be hunting down for what she did to Joel. Years of waiting and for nothing but disappointment from a development team I love. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
