Disappointing followed with inconsistencies, disrespect, a general lack of logic and decision making, despite the possibility
of actually making sensible, and realistic decisions (that is basically non-existence in the entire game) that can make the game an actually interesting journey with new and returning characters, but instead, it's mostly dry garbage shoved to your face forcefully.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The problem with this game is not the LGBTQ stuff or Ellie being gay or Abby being buff or looking trans. The problem with this game is the complete assassination of the main characters, Joel was killed off in such a dumb way and to early, then they make you play the person who killed him in order to build sympathy for that character..except it doesn’t work. The ending is even worse. Imagine going to see John Wick where he kills everyone except the actual person who killed his dog and then let him live. The story is a terrible twist on the cliche revenge plot used in all media and it is a complete kick in the face to all the fans of this franchise. There is good about this game though it has set a new bar for how games should look, sound, and play. Everything except the story is absolutely game of the year material but when you make a 30 hour long story game (mine took me far less but that is the designed time) but the story is absolute disrespectful garbage then you have no game at all. Personally I regret getting this game as i have been looking forward to it for 7 years. I’ll just consider the end of tlou 1 as the canon ending since in my opinion I think the last of us is perfect (even it’s flaws). I didn’t expect this game to be better or as good as the first but it is the absolute worst it could possibly be in terms of storytelling. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly did not expect much of the game due to the leaks .. But the game is a perfect garbage for several reasons, the most important are the poorly planned ideas of the developers for having murdered Joel in the first hour of the game and in a stupid way , it seems as if he were flanking the character to the point that he forgot that they are in a **** apocalyptic world where you should not trust anyone or this is how he acted and thought in the first game. Here his death makes it look like it had to happen because the director got bored of Joel and said hey why he is not dying now ?, seriously lazy and forced his death .. And there are other things as the story developed in favor of including political propaganda and giving those pacifist messages that are irrelevant or run in a delayed way. Or that characters like Dyna, abby and even ellie herself are quite boring. 4/10 The game looks nice, the music is fine, it doesn't innovate much the gameplay of the first game and that's all .. 4/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game gets my high praise for its beautiful visual and animation, stunning scenery and sound. I, however, find the story and its character development to be atrocious.

This game did everything it could to destroy the characters we know and love from the first game. Characters we knew from the first game are dumb down and killed to keep the plot moving. For example, Tommy and Joel, veteran survivors of the apocalypse who had been on the run from pursuers, conveniently give away their identity to a group of strangers, thereby giving the game a convenient way to start its revenge plot. Joel is made out to be the villain for killing people and Abby's father. On the contrary, Abby is the true villain of the story. Joel, though flawed, had a justifiable reason to kill people - he did it to protect his daughter. Abby is a brute who only killed people for revenge. She did not hesitate to torture and kill Joel after he had saved her multiple times in past. It also is hinted that Abby killed anyone whose name was Joel. Basically, Abby is the scum of the earth. I honestly thought nothing would bring me more satisfaction than seeing Abby die at the hands of Ellie. I was wrong. The game not only robbed me of that joy and then spat in my face by making the villain, Abby, the new protagonist of the game for an extensive amount of time. No matter how the game tried to emotionally manipulate me into liking Abby (giving her a dog while making Ellie kill a dog), I find her to be the true villain of the game.

Major character decisions in the story are laughably unreasonable. Besides what I just mentioned in the previous paragraph about Tommy and Joel, Abby spared Elli after she had witnessed Joel's death at Abby's hands and knowing full well Elli will seek revenge for his death. For some inexplicable reasons, Abby was later shocked that Ellie was hunting her down. In the final fight of the game, Ellie, going against all reasons, spared Abby, rendering the whole game pointless. So it seems only the villain of the game, Abby, gets what she want in this revenge plot.

All these things from above lead me to the conclusion that Neil Druckmann is a talentless hack who has been riding on the success of the others. Furthermore, it is also likely that Neil Druckmann inserted himself in the game in various ways, One as Abby's henchman who spat on Joel's corpse and another as a doctor on an ID card who is 100% intellect and is part of the organization called New Dogs.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do feel awful for the people that designed the games environment and graphics because its one of the best I've seen in a game and now all of the studio is going to get this much backlash for the most questionable decisions in story telling ever.

But before that I do believe the gameplay has barely improved. I expected something more than a jump button, dogs and the ability to crawl. Then if the gameplay isn't much improved then surely the main focus of the game is the story. Which is the worst part of the game. None of the charm and connection from the first game is here. Joel the character I loved most from the last game is killed very early in the game and honestly I wanted to stop playing there. But I forced myself onwards. When they announced the game we all sort of knew Joel was going to die in some way. But the way they did it here is extremely disrespectful to the character that was one of the best parts of the original. They could of done it in such a beautiful way like Lee Everett from the telltale walking dead series. Or Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2. Hitting so emotionally and satisfyingly. But when Joel gets clubbed to death instead and you only feel so much anger towards abby. But i thought okay this is the villain and Joel's death is a driving force. I'm still annoyed but if I get an adult furious and faithful to character Ellie on a hunt for abby with a great ending and emotion in the story i can still give the game a 7. But no. You play as the villain that killed your favourite character. One of the most iconic characters in gaming. And you play as their murderer of the icon of the first game for half of the game. When i started playing as abby I put my controller down in rebellion of this decision because I couldn't accept the stupidity of this. Throughout all of the time with abby the game wanted me to sympethesis with her but I just felt rage towards her. But I also hated playing as Ellie. The side characters are just... eh... just average at best. Returning characters feel off and new characters are boring. But Ellie is the worst at this. In the original she was the little light in the depressing world but here she's stoic and cold and not very likable. But i haven't touched on the ending. We go through armies as Ellie with over 100+ peoples blood on our hands just to reach abby and then let her go. She lets go the murderer of her father figure. No one would do this. I mean at least if we killed her id be a bit happier. All in all the game is maybe okay with gameplay and idiotic when it comes to story. The only thing I can compare it to is if in God of War 2 kratos gets killed by Freya and then we play as her running away from atreus. And then at the end atreus let's her go because of... reasons.

Stupid story. Don't ever repeat the mistakes.

English: Despites the stunning visuals and the almost flawless gameplay The Last of Us: Part II is such a disappointment for the fans of the game characters and history...
In the initial hours of the game Joel dies for Abby, a weird choice but is understandable...
But then we have the game ending that doesn't make any sense because in the whole game Ellie is searching for her veagence against Abby ( a not so good character ) but at the end she doesn't kill her ( lol ), leting this not finished journey feeling in the game ending.
Overal a very good gameplay but a not so good history... What ruins a few part of the whole experience.
Sorry for english mistakes (i'm not totally fluent yet)

Now to be fair, it is a story-game so I didn't expect it to be horribly challenging or mechanically interesting but the story isn't compelling. Not because of some inclusivity-garbage, it's much simpler than that, the characters are just poorly developed and unlikable. The brilliant writing of the first game hasn't returned. An unfortunate disappointment.
Graphics 8/10 very beautiful with a few rough edges, some of the fluids look strange
Gameplay 4/10 Smooth controls, no challenge, enemy AI is horrible
Story 3/10 The story isn't as compelling as it's predecessor and attempts to be a lot more than it is
Entertainment 1/10 The bottom line is, the game isn't fun. It was a chore to play, with the story unable to motivate me nothing other than looking at the assets was enjoyable. Combat isn't fun even though it's smooth, and exploration isn't an option. My playthrough simply wasn't enjoyable.

I wish I could recommend this game as I loved the original but i can't in good faith do so.

It had every element a narrative driven experience is expected to while also mantaining a somewhat entertaining gameplay. Charismatic yet flawed very close to human characters? An atmosphere that invites to immersion and a plot on par with great Hollywood productions.

Sadly the last of us part 2 lacks in every aspect aforementioned. The intelligent almost human narrative has turned into a cartoonish almost revenge simple plot that even at that fails to deliver.

Naughty dog decided to exchange clever story twists and down to earth dialogues for mere shock value and cheap generic bits.

The gameplay is good but it doesn't innovate while some mechanic's are welcome and work in paper, reality is they don't or fail to execute entirely like the "jump" or executions.

Sound is perhaps a good point fpr the game. However none of that is as impactful as the story in which a narrative driven game should exceed. This makes ellie's journey less impactful, because even though Joel's dead was but a cheap devices to justify this all, ellie fails to fulfill it.

4/10 in my opinion. I didn't enjoy this game as the first one.

This video game is a quintessential example of greed and capitalist industry gone wrong and it has no legitimate creative reason to exist.

I'm sorry folks, but if you expected this to live up to the strongest points of the original, you were a fool from the start. Atrocious; Philosophically and ideologically bankrupt and incredibly morose and un-fun.

The first game may not have aged particularly well in terms of gameplay, but is still a masterpiece in my opinion, due to the outstanding characters, fast pacing and compelling story. The first game may not have aged particularly well in terms of gameplay, but is still a masterpiece in my opinion, due to the outstanding characters, fast pacing and compelling story. While Part 2 improves on the gameplay mechanics in a lot of ways, the story just doesn’t work at all and the game lacks the urgency that made the first one so difficult to put down.

The large open areas are technically impressive and detailed but not particularly varied or interesting to explore. Other than some snowy areas at the beginning of the game and some more variety towards the end, the abandoned and overgrown buildings you visit for most of its runtime are all rather repetitive. You often find yourself in areas filled with enemies and a single exit point, which takes a certain amount of time (holding down the triangle button) to open. You need to clear out enough enemies, stealthily or otherwise, in order to open the exit without being interrupted. This same formula is repeated over and over again for the majority of the game. While these sections are less linear than the original, they can also drag on for far too long. The stealth mechanics have been improved upon but are still more frustrating and less refined than those seen in other games, such as Metal Gear Solid V and Horizon Zero Dawn. The AI is just laughable at times, the enemies have inconsistent fields of view and the autosave can be annoying and leave you stuck in some difficult situations. While the game is effective at leaving you with just enough health and ammo, particularly on higher difficulties, this means you end up searching every corner of every room for the same few crafting materials constantly, which becomes tedious.

The story was the original game’s greatest strength, but is by far my biggest issue with the sequel. The idea that there is good and bad on both sides is an interesting concept but this is incredibly poorly executed. There is an event about two hours in that I won’t spoil, which feels shocking and unearned at that point in the game. Later on, you are supposed to view this event from a different perspective, as well as what happened during the ending of the first game. The writers simply don’t do a good enough job of making the player empathise with the antagonist and the way the messy, non-linear story plays out doesn’t help in this regard. It’s very difficult to side with a character you barely know over beloved characters from the first game, especially when they seem so evil and unlikeable, never really showing any remorse or humanity. Including a few scenes of her playing fetch with her dog just isn’t enough.

Aside from playing as Ellie in the present day and during some quite enjoyable flashback sequences, you actually play most of the second half of the game as the main antagonist, Abby. Frankly, I didn’t enjoy this at all, I couldn’t relate to the character or forgive her actions and simply didn’t want to play as her. These 10 or so hours were a chore to get through, as it feels like you’re at odds with what the game is making you do. There was one section where I was glad every time the character I was playing as lost, which I’d consider to be a failure from a storytelling perspective. These sections could have been removed entirely as the game suffers from being twice the length of its predecessor, with a much less compelling narrative to distract from the sometimes mediocre gameplay.

The characters of Ellie, Dina and of course, Joel, were a highlight. They made me want to see the game through to the end, despite how much I disliked the story. I thought Ashley Johnson, Shannon Woodward and Troy Baker did a fantastic job with the material they were given and the music is effective. The game is also incredibly polished with outstanding graphics and attention to detail.

I truly wanted to love this game and was determined to avoid all the negativity prior to its launch. It was probably my most highly anticipated game of all time, but falls short in so many ways. The story is miserable, poorly structured, has no real resolution and just isn’t as intelligent as it is trying to be. The ending of the first game was morally ambiguous, and I’m sure Joel’s actions would have had consequences, but I’m not convinced exploring these in the way they do here adds much to the series. The hospital sequence was a thrilling finale to what I’d consider to be one of the best stories ever told in a video game and questioning these actions only diminishes this.

This was overall an incredibly disappointing experience and I’m surprised by some of the decisions Naughty Dog have made here, given their impressive track record over many years. The characters deserved better, especially Joel, and so did the fans.

Ellie can take down hundreds of enemies at a time with no sweat off her ass. But she draws the line at pregnant women. With the amount and brutality of the killing she has done would definitely dull those feelings. Why did Ellie let Abby live in the end?. She watched her kill Joel. She has a very big reason to kill Abby! Conscience or not. She won't give a damn! And, the gameplay is a little too scarce. It doesn't feel like you actually play enough of the game. I don't want to watch the game! I want to play it. Disappointing overall and I would not recommend you buy it. And don't get me started on that poorly written sex scene. It’s a revenge story with kill after needless kill, after needless kill. It basically numbs the player to the point where you don’t care about why you started this journey in the first place. The violence became exhausting even before the second half started. There are no new meaningful relationships in part two . The only relationship I cared about during the whole game was the one between Ellie and Joel. ( There’s a scene in this game that’s even better than the giraffe) I didn’t care about any of the new characters in this new story, because I was never really given a reason too. -Great Graphics
-Guns and fighting feels really nice and smooth
-Great moments between the first games protagonists
    -Tons to explore and sightsee

    Cons:
-Minor bugs that ruin the immersion (Guns glitch out, AI acts really dumb, rarely though)
-The story is very hit or miss
    -New characters feel really forced.
-new mechanics don't feel very fleshed out
-Parts of the game fit more in a movie sense. -No sense to replay the game a second time
    -NO Factions MP.
Personally the 4 point i give it go towards the gamplay. The lack of the other 6 are because of the story -2 and the lack of MP -4. I find myself not wanting to play it a second time because i really don't want yo sit through hours of walking and "story building". The lack of MP also just makes me want to not go through the expirience again. I keep hearing this game is not meant to be enjoyed, well yeah they are right i didn't really enjoy it at all. And because of that I dont want to play again. Also, this game really feels like druckmann was high on his ego to make an artistic revolutionary game but failed as hard as Kojima in his latest Death Stranding. Going into the story...
First of all I loved Joel in the first game. I now he's not the hero of a standard video game, I know he was a merciless cold bastard that made a questionable choice in the end. But goddamit was it done well. His death in this game? Just really felt like a **** you to a fan like me. And it's druckmanns choice to have made his death like that. But it's my choice to not like a hack story with butchered characters too. The game lost me and therefore my faith in ND, I'd return this game if i didnt split the cost of it with my friends to play it one by one. The new characters suck and the ending feels so anticlimatic with an even worse written morally gray ending that the first game established. For a game that was placed on a high pedistal it sure fell flat. However, if your a fan you should still buy it, 4 years from now when its on sale for 20 bucks. Wake me up when MP is available. Ill for sure buy that if it doesnt make 2 steps forward one step back like UC4s mp.

Wanted to leave a real review. I stopped after the getting the gas at the dome and the other location. Visuals/Acting/Presentation is a 9/10.

My problem is story and gameplay. The game plays like it's 2012, controlling Ellie feels like driving a tank. Between that, the close up camera and 20-30 FPS this game doesn't feel fun to play. I didn't have this problem with RE2, but maybe

My problem is story and gameplay. The game plays like it's 2012, controlling Ellie feels like driving a tank. Between that, the close up camera and 20-30 FPS this game doesn't feel fun to play. I didn't have this problem with RE2, but maybe because it was 60FPS on PC, not sure.

The story.....wow. I'll be nitpicky here but everything adds up. Starting minute 1, characters are low energy like their on melatonin or something. I get their setting a depressing tone, but there has to be someone that I like. They go into school drama with Dina kissing Ellie, but Ellies not sure, and Jessie dated Dina but he's cool with Ellie and Dina, but the bartender is a bigot, and on and on....it's torturous. You didn't give me a reason to care about these low energy, grumpy characters, why would I care about their relationships?

They try to remedy that with Ellie and Dina's dialogue while progressing through the game but for some reason neither of them interest me. Their both kinda boring, corny jokes, just nothing interesting to say. It's weird because you'd think they'd have a lot of cool stories but they don't.

The other character is a trainwreck, she's basically Sasuke in Naruto times 10. Not sure why I'm supposed to care about her.

I think 4/10 is fair, maybe higher if you enjoy the gameplay. The story is a slog, pacing bad, unlikable characters, etc. Good set pieces and visuals but it's not worth it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The long awaited sequel is here, and when it comes to gameplay mechanics and graphical presentation it’s amazing. However the core storyline is quite insulting to fans. The fact they tried to hide Abby in the trailers is misleading. Even more misleading is making Joel seem like a major character in trailers only to have him be killed off two hours in a 20+ hour game in a needlessly brutal and distasteful way. ND tried to subvert expectations and be edgy but instead alienated fans of the game by destroying two beloved and well developed characters. The story and it’s characters failed to grow and develop. It’s just misery Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
