I do agree that we played as Abby a little to much, but i grew to understand why she did what she did and actually agreed with what she did because of the death of her dad. I would have done the same thing in that situation.

Overall I dont think this game deserved to be review bombed so bad when so many people put so much work into the game for our enjoyment.

Even in Joel's last words, you knew it was a long time coming. Gameplay and NPC AI is better than the first game, but not revolutionary. Pacing was also kinda **** with the back and forth via flashbacks. On the plus side this game is more re-playeble compared to the first game, as it is more trophy friendly and more variety in how enemy encounters play out. This also has to do with how big and varied the environments are, resulting in varied and entertaining scenarios with enemies. A second play-through will not play out the same as the first one. Some moments looked like game-play sections at an E3 presentation. Set peace moments are one of the best of this whole generation, even rivaling that of Uncharted's, especially in the Abby sections where the WLF and Saraphites go all out and burning down an whole island. When Ellie killed pregnant Mel, was one of the most shocking gaming moments in history IMO. This game has one of the best cut scenes I have ever seen both on a technical and emotional level. While this game is not as good and revolutionary as the first game, it is still a solid game. While I didn't want to continue after Joel died, I am still glad I did. While this game doesn't deserve GOTY, for the ****ty pacing being the biggest reason, it still should be discussed for years to come. Expand

As someone who played through TLoU1 many times, I can tell you the sequel absolutely lives up to expectations. It's really too bad that it's gotten caught up in so much controversy because it is truly a fantastic game. I would highly recommend that any fan of the original play this game.

    Quick thoughts on specific aspects:

Gameplay: This is where TLoU really shines. They took everything that was great about the first game and ratcheted it up. The stealth combat sections are incredibly tense and visceral. The AI is fantastic. The maps are large and varied. Crafting and skill trees were upgraded in a way that makes sense and does not feel unnecessarily complicated.

Visuals: The graphics here are absolutely stunning. From the countless minor touches to the massive set pieces, this is one of the 2-3 best-looking games I've ever played.

Sound: Same as visuals, the audio here is really top-notch. I especially liked the soundtrack they added for stealth combat sections against human enemies. The music has a tense Nine Inch Nails vibe that makes the encounters so much more tense. Enemy sounds are another standout. Human enemies have an impossibly wide range of audio splashes -- from side conversations to communicating via a whistle-based code ... it's really phenomenal.

Story: OK, so this is where the controversy comes in. Personally, I loved the story and I loved that Naughty Dog did not go in a predictable fan-service route for the sequel. I won't spoil it, but I did not have any problem with the choices they made. The story is definitely complex and it is NOT the straightforward, linear style we got in the first game. That is why I would definitely recommend 1.) beating the game, and 2.) replaying it before giving the story a final grade. I know it's a lot to ask someone to commit 50-60 hours like that, but I feel like this game is worth it.

I did have some small issues with the story. First, because of the way the story unfolds, it is difficult to develop the same level of emotional connection to the characters as you did in the first game. This game does some really cool things with flashbacks and perspective changes, but the trade-off is that you're not experiencing the same emotions in the same order as your character. I felt like it all fell into place by the end, which was incredibly satisfying. But it did lessen the emotional investment during first playthrough. This issue goes away almost entirely on subsequent playthroughs, which is why I strongly recommend playing it through twice before making a final judgment.

The second issue I had was that some of the characters felt underdeveloped - specifically Dina and Jesse. These were great, well-acted characters who both have awesome moments. But they don't feel as fleshed out as some of the characters in the first game. I think this issue comes from the fact that many of the best side characters in the first game (Tess, Bill, Henry/Sam) were only with us for a few chapters, whereas some side characters in TLoU2 are around for much longer. So they have the same amount of character development spread across more screen time, which can make their characters feel kind of watered down and less memorable than some of our favorites from the first game. To be clear, though, this was a MINOR issue.

Last story point: This may be just me, but my take is that the game ends in a cliffhanger. Not quite your traditional cliffhanger, but I definitely do not think this is the end of the journey for some of these characters.

Anyway, I highly recommend this game. Ignore the nonsense from the trolls and alt-right goobers who can't handle anything different. This is a fantastic game and absolutely worth playing. Enjoy!

There is unnecessary hate surrounding this game but I feel there is also too much praise for a game that has clear flaws. The Last of Us Part 2 suffers with a lack of focus and introduces too many characters with little time with each to actually learn or care about. The first game showed that it took a full game to invest in two characters, and this one tries to develop character investment within the main story with at least nine characters and fails to establish that with the exception of maybe one character. Now of course, this is just my opinion and credit where credit is due, the performances, motion capture, animation and visually fidelity of this game are incredible and deserve praise. But for me the environmental and creature sound is the star of this game. The sound engineers deserve the highest praise for elevating the horror and making the locations of the game feel alive. As a conclusion I do think it is a game worth experiencing but I would recommend lowering expectations if you are a fan of the first game. I hope Naughty Dog don’t disregard all criticism for the game as mindless hate as I believe there is one criticism from many reviews that I have to agree with and that is; the game is too long. Quality over quantity is what Naughty Dog has always delivered, until now. Expand

This is not a perfect game. This is not for everyone. There are reasons I like it and other reasons others may not. And that's fine. Just tired of seeing everyone bash each other for simply having a different opinion.

For me though, I find this to be a better game overall than the first game. The story isn't as strong, but strong enough that coupled with gameplay that certainly improves
This is not a perfect game. This is not for everyone. There are reasons I like it and other reasons others may not. And that's fine. Just tired of seeing everyone bash each other for simply having a different opinion.

For me though, I find this to be a better game overall than the first game. The story isn't as strong, but strong enough that coupled with gameplay that certainly improves upon its predecessor makes for a better game in my opinion. Speaking of story, there are elements in it that some don't like that I personally don't have a problem with. Some people don't like certain characters, like Abby, though by the end of the game I ended up liking her more than I did early on. There's a serious event that happens near the the beginning that she is connected with and while some don't like this decision, I think that is the only thing that drives the story from that point.

The big issue I do have with this game is its pacing, especially towards the middle. I thought the choice here was an interesting one, but it was also very jarring after the amount of time spent playing at that point.

Gameplay-wise, it's definitely an improvement. Combat and stealth feel smoother, crafting mid-encounter doesn't feel like much of a hassle, and simple touches like jumping and going prone add a few more possibilites to encounters.

It's also worth mentioning that on the technical side of things, to briefly mention, graphics are stunning, both for characters and the world. Character animations are very fluid and lifelike and facial animations are super realistic, especially in cutscenes.

Overall, while the story of this game holds it back from being anywhere near great, I still think it's a good story. Taking that with some improved gameplay and this is an experience that I find to be better than the first game, in my opinion. Not everyone will like it, but if you're curious about this game, give it a shot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel as though this game has been bombarded by people who had the game spoiled for them and either watched a youtuber had a bad time or only focusing on digging up the negative elements.

My main problem is fans never coming to understand the ending of the original game and viewing the main character from as a unbreakable moral pillar and his death in the second game as pointless shock value. Which I wholeheartedly disagree with.

I cannot believe people cannot exit the narrative for even a second to see that the end of the first game is a classic trolley problem. You can argue both sides but we have to add the circumstances that Joel also murdered a host of people (including Marlene Ellies only mother figure) to turn the trolley track to hit humanity.

People even try to break down the fictional universe science using real world science to justify Joel's actions. "The fireflies couldn't have made a cure" is something I hear a lot often levied at the writers (even though there word is usually definite). I don't care about the logistics of a cure. The way I see it Joel would have fought his way through the hospital if it was a 10% chance to make a cure or a 90% maybe even 100%. In Joel's mind he's just saving a girl because he couldn't save his own.

Even though I think his death scene was handled fine, people have criticisms about how the circumstances of the characters death was handled. I believe that even in a world where he died in fans "perfect circumstances" people would still complain about Joel's death because for the plot to work he has to die horrifically and in the first act.

People are so angry at this fictional characters death that they are blindsided by rage and go straight into harassing the developers or writers without considering why this character died. It's also not like a real person died, after that point in the game he appears in several flashbacks with some of the best dialogue in the series.

The part I disliked about the game was Abby's half of the campaign. Not the content but more the structure. The character work is really tight but is let down by the fact that these characters (Abby, Owen, Mel, Manny, WLFs, Nora, etc...) only have 3 days to get as much development as characters that have had whole games to get personalities. The dialogue is all very good

Some of the theming and comparisons come across as a little heavy handed like the double pregnancies. The game feeds you a lot of information with Abby in such a short time like how she saved a Zebra and how she was in a love triangle, This has lead a lot of people into feeling manipulated by the plot because the game feeds you so many reasons to like abby in such a short time.

But after coming around to Abby just as a character and not her place in the plot I've come to love the idea that Abby doesn't always know the right thing to do but the people around her do, she's constantly redeemed by the people around her and talk her out of making bad decisions which is really interesting.

If Abby had been given more time or had somehow been intercut with Ellie. If it were up to me I would have made Abby's campaign optional after completing Ellies because honestly you don't need to know Abby's story before the theater while your invested in Ellie, Ellie only has to feel a little bit of pity by the end of the game for the ending to make sense which Abby's campaign doesn't need to be present for.

That's just my thoughts on some of the more controversial story elements. But I haven't talked about gameplay.

I think for single player action adventure tlou2 has no match, I won't go in depth but it is perfect and my grounded playthrough was a once in a lifetime experience

Puzzles are much more interesting than the first game, a quarter as many ladder puzzles and no water pallet puzzles was great.

The only chapter where the game started to drag was Jackson and Ellie day 1.

Music was great but unlike the first there are no tracks i'd listen to outside of setting ambiance.

Upgrade trees were much tighter than the first.

Best dynamic animation work in a game since red dead 2.

Collectibles were fun but I always think there are way to many and that letters shouldn't count.

Graphically amazing but wish the film grain would go away, also made my ps4 fan go off like crazy.

The faction and character dialogue writing always stays at the top rung.

I think I touched everything I wanted to talk about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us II is not gonna give you what you want. This is the entire point of the game. It is supposed to make you suffer and feel uncomfortable unlike anything else can.

Everyone wanted Joel and Ellie adventures continuing their beautifully established father-daughter-esque relationship in part I. Well no, you´re not gonna get what you want. Endure it and survive!

Instead the games takes a very bold approach, one that I personally approve of. And there it is - personal preference. Everybody is gonna have their own opinions and thoughts about this game. So please get the full experience, play it for yourself and then decide how much you like it. For me it´s a 10. I am amazed by TLOU II and what impact it has on me long after I finished my first playthrough. I had a remarkable *unique* 30 hour experience with many mixed states of emotions. You might disagree with that, you might have hated the way the story continued and overall see it only as a 4. And that is totally fine! But don´t let anybody (including me) or any leaked scenes or reviews influence you how to feel about a game (and basically anything in life). And please don´t hate on or even personally attack people who completely stan or bash the hell out of a game, that´s disgusting and there´s just no room for that. Respect other peoples honest opinion.

The Last Of Us II is able to portray such diverse emotions and aspects. Fear, sadness, fun, tragedy, violence, anger, redemption, forgiveness, panic (increases with difficulty level), love, friendship, nature and beautiful scenery, I could go on... The visuals and character performances are absolutely stunning and create a real life atmosphere feeling. The soundtrack is very well used in the right spots to strengthen these effects.

I´m not gonna dive very deep into the story itself, I just wanna mention a few things about Abby. I hated having to play with her in the beginning. After everything I´ve been through with Ellie, it was just a smack in the face with a brick. TLOU II is very good with these kind of moments. I let Abby die intentionally a couple times. The game makes you suffer again and does exactly what you don´t want: trying very hard to make you like Abby. As the story continued, I started to get a new perspective on her. When it came down to the dramatic fight backstage in the theatre I didn´t root for her as my emotional connection with Ellie is much stronger. But I gotta admit, Abby has been through some rough stuff. Up high in the skyscrapers and down low in ground zero on day 2 captures this best. Some people might´ve wanted to free Abby from her sins at the pillars in Seraphite fashion. But in the end I was okay with letting her go. Maybe breaking that cycle of revenge is exactly what Ellie needed to do to get her redemption and get the chance at a "normal" life.

No other video game or movie for that matter left me more emotionally drained when the credits rolled. I stared at the screen in disbelief of what had just happened until a beautiful version of wayfaring stranger started playing making me tear up. After my first playthrough I felt empty, sad and confused. Ellie seemed to have lost everything. I hated it. Seeing her end up with her biggest fear: ending up alone with everyone she cares about either gone or dead. That´s just tragic and hurts my soul. This was just another huge bottle shattered in my face bringing me down.

It took me a while to process everything and it still does. I was so shocked I didn´t notice small details like: Ellie wearing Dina´s bracelet after not having it on her when leaving the farmhouse. Ellie carrying no weapons and acting unsurprised and unbothered by the empty house. This hints at the possibility of her and Dina settling down in Jackson which I´d be happy to see.

I believe she went back for the only object you can interact with in the last scene: the guitar. I´m not sure if she planned to take it with her. But after attempting to play with her missing fingers and then putting to rest what was her only connection left to Joel, for me it symbolized that she has finally come to peace with Joel and she can fully forgive him moving forward.

I don´t know if there´s gonna be another emotional roller coaster part III but I´d be happy to get any new TLOU content, next time hopefully without leaks.
