Story was extremely unsatisfying but gameplay and graphics are gorgeous and genuinely amazed me. Playing the game made me feel bad about myself, for example beating the **** out of ellie or having to try and sympathize with such an unlovable character (Talking about ABBY).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After finishing the game, my feelings were mixed. The graphics are the best you’ll find on the PS4. This is seriously a great game to look at. The music is written by Gustavo Santaolalla who kills it once again for this game. In fact, some scenes ride purely on the graphics and music to illicit an emotional reactions and I found these scenes incredibly insulting. The gameplay is a solid B+ for me. I often would get frustrated when popping out of cover as the enemy was able to get a shot on me faster than I could Iine up an accurate shot on them. What I realized is that the game is trying to encourage frantic dashing around the map. I would be most successful when I popped off a headshot from stealth and then quickly relocated myself to avoid the onslaught of enemies moving in on my location. I think this works well enough but I wish the game had a little bit stronger aim assist by default. Now onto the story. I don’t want to go too in depth here so all I’ll say is that this game is filled with situations that feel so unbelievable and forced. The story as a whole is both unappealing and unrealistic given the context of the first game. And 10 hours are spent playing as the antagonist, trying to earn sympathy from the player for this character. This falls completely flat and what you’re left with is hours of pushing yourself through the story just to get back to the characters you actually care about. Overall I don’t think that this is the sequel that the first game deserved, and I’m looking forward to doing another play through of that first game to cleanse my palate. Expand

Pero el fuerte de este juego siempre fue la narrativa y ahi es donde decae. Se pierden muchas cosas del primero, no puedo dejar de compararlo y pensar qie la segunda parte fue innecesaria. Good points - Nice visuals, good gameplay and genius level design.
Bad points - Poor storytelling, bad narrative and the worst dialogue between characters out a cutscene.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Game mechanics introduced in the sequel improve the gameplay loop and the combat animations look fantastic and provide a variety of interactions when combating enemies. Now, with regards to the story, Naughty Dog introduces multiple themes and ideas in Part II, but fails to truly flesh them out in an emotionally and rationally satisfying way. The same can be said for the characters, both new and old, with characters having little development and rarely with any payoff, with many characters' story lines abruptly ending with little fanfare. By the end of Part II, both the player and the characters are in such a low point both physically and emotionally that you come out of the experience wondering what the point of it all was? Unfortunately, The Last of us Part II's response to that question is such an unsatisfactory, weak, and vague answer, that it ultimately leaves a bitter taste in the player's mouth to the whole Last of Us Part II experience.

but what makes the game good is game play graphic world design and development now my decision is that the story is fluent and beautiful at first
it also has a start that draws you in. obviously it is played for 3 hours in a row at first without ever leaving the game
but when you get in the middle of the game you can start to get bored slowly
but when you get to the end you are begging for the game to end, especially when you play the memories of Abby you are getting cold from the game.
and we came to the final, I think it was the worst and the most disgusting end compared to the game history
Even if a person wanted the end of a game, it wouldn't end so badly
In short, my comment is that the beginning of the game is perfect, the middle is meh, the end is disgusting
If you are going to buy the game, I can recommend it to you for game play and for the pleasure felt when you hit that npc. but the decision to take for the story is up to you
so in short, it eliminates game hunger

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get why this game is getting hate. I don’t think it is deserved (except for the parts where you play as Abby). I personally liked the game, the thing that felt off was the tonal shift. It happened so suddenly that it caught me off guard. One second you are a agile badass killing clickers left and right, then the next you are a refrigerator playing fetch with a dog. The ending wasn’t something that I expected to be so hollow. I was left with an unfulfilled feeling in the pit of my stomach. It felt like my 20+ hours of gameplay amounted to nothing, but after a while it made since( even though it was pretty stupid). My take on the ending was that Ellie wanted to end the cycle of violence by not killing Abby(which was stupid). Anyways Ellie ended the violence by mowing down hordes of people only to not kill the person who killed her father figure and her best friend. The person who stripped Ellie of almost everything/one she had know. Even upon Ellie’s return to her home, she is stripped of her family and 2 fingers. All in all the revenge Plot didn’t really work for a game like the last of us. I applaud Neil and his team at Naughty dog for creating a unique experience in tlou2 but it is impossible to follow up a masterpiece. I still loved playing this game I just think that they needed someone on staff to think of pacing and placing, because it was a bit of a mess. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game does a great job in technical aspects like graphics and animations but was mediocre in game play mechanics like melee and ranged combat. The auto-aim was not very good, since it was not always locking the aim on the target. There was also no target locking for the melee combat, which can cause a problem when u dodge the enemy attacks. Mostly i lost the enemy in my sight, when i dodged their attacks. The AI was ok. But the story was terrible in every aspect. The game was boring maybe half of the game play time, since the story is terrible and a couple of times makes no progress for 3-4 hours. You just loot and fight the enemies. The main goal of this game is story telling. But the main story is not good/interesting. There are also some ridiculous parts in the story. Most annoying one is that Abby was helping 2 newly met Scars children and by doing this she was taking on her faction. The game could be one of the best games ever, if the story was a good one. But now it is just a okay game. Expand

    Pros:

    - This is one of the most visually impressive games I've ever played. Near photo realistic at times and character animations (except picking up loot!) are exceptional

    - The gameplay has improved from the first, with larger word design, greater arsenal of weapons, character moves and smarter enemy AI, enabling to play how you want and move dynamically between action and stealth

    - Excellent sound design. Playing this game with headphones made enemy encounters tense and the sounds from the infected horrific

    - The performances in this game are top notch, taking motion capture to a whole new level. even the slightest movements, glances and unique character mannerisms are picked up in these great performances

    Cons:

    - In an attempt to expand the world of the Last of Us and make a bigger story that "subverts" expectations, the story is significantly dumber than the first game. Characters behave uncharacteristically, and some scenes have characters suddenly having a change of heart, as if they are bipolar. And this is not just with the main characters but even with the supporting cast. Also the overall theme of the "circle of violence and revenge" is highly unsubtle and bordering on the level of pretentiousness. This emotional weight of this theme is nullified by the game's brutal gameplay, which is more visceral and also includes dogs as enemies. While Part 1 also had the player commit violent acts against many foes, it was a story a familiar bond between characters, protecting one another and hoping to reach the Fireflies and potentially creating a vaccine that could save humanity. The game was about surviving a brutal world, where nobody is truly free of sin, but the net positive of potentially saving humanity outweighed the negatives of killing so many. But this game makes you hoardes of people for and tries to make you feel bad when certain characters are killed in cutscenes. There was no emotional weight to these moments, with one particular death making me laugh at loud at how the game tried to emotionally blackmail you for killing, when hours prior you were already conditioned to the same act to others.

The game's pacing is all over the place, often killing any momentum that had been built. There are even flashbacks within flashbacks, which could have easily been avoided had certain scenes and gameplay sections were reordered in a more linear fashion. The game failed to create any emotional attachment to the second protagonist, due to poor placing of their gameplay sections and the stupid decision to remove any character/weapon upgrades. I know that this is a new character but you could have at least given the player resources from the get-go so the player could immediately purchase some upgrades or have some skills pre-unlocked. This decision made it feel like playing a game for 10 hours only to have your save corrupt and having to start the game again, highly demoralising.

The game is also far too long, especially the 2nd characters sections. There are even some story beats that do not go anywhere and feel like needless padding. Finally, while I didn't like the way the intro played out, although I understand the reason but felt the execution was poor, the ending is absolutely abysmal, and goes against the main theme the story kept hitting you over the head with. They could've followed through with their theme to its logical conclusion or at least given the player the choice in the final confrontation, which would have had a far stronger emotional weight. But in the end the game ends on a whimper than leaves you feeling empty, and questioning why you even played it to begin with.

I don't normally hold game stories as high as books or movies, due to the gameplay from most AAA breaking any sense of emersion the story was supposed to tell. But as someone who thought the Last of Us 1 was a major step in the right direction of video game story telling, setting a new bar in the medium, I'm obviously going to extra critical to the story of the sequel. Overall I was disappointed in that regard. I respect the decision to go back to these characters, this world and tell a darker story, I even respect that they made such a bold choice in the beginning. But the execution was so poor, with terrible pacing and an underlying theme that contantly and unsubtlely beats you over the head in a pretentious manner, and an ending that is just the wettest fart in the wind.

It wouldve been nice if it was a stand alone game but to play with the villain made me uncomfortable. The whole LGBTQ agenda is crystal clear here like I mean I dnt have anything against it but seriously lile you made the majority gay or **** and not just that I had to read love letters about some gay guy who lost his husband. They pushed this too hard and it ruined the game for me. The ending lacked a meaningful ending I mean it didnt even show where Dina went or what happened or where did Ellie leave to. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its surprising that a game with 10/10 graphics and a 9/10 soundtrack and decent gameplay could only receive a 6/10, but thats where I would rate TLoU2 due to its story.

For some context, the previous entry TLoU1 was a story set in a dystopian/miserable world that had a story fundamentally about love.. and hope. With all the tragedy that they underwent, it was the juxtaposition of hope and Joel/Ellie's story that carried you through the game.

TLoU2 was a story set in a dystopian world about love and hate/revenge, (At least on Ellie's story). Without the aspect of hope, and given the context of the story... unfortunately there was very little redeeming about this game in terms of story. You had a miserable world and a miserable revenge plot. This was the authors intent and the author succeeded in this mission. Yes, there were some other intentions such as exploring the concept of revenge and forgiveness, but this was felt as secondary to the prime directive to make you miserable.

I think the authors of the story looked it on paper and perhaps in the context of film and thought it would be an artistic masterpiece, because the story on paper seems beautifully woven and with intricacies and nuance to its themes that if explored differently might have been enjoyable. But in the context of a video game it simply didnt work. The miserable, hopeless story detracted from what could have been a game with similar global appeal as the original. The CHOICE of hopelessness is something I cannot understand for a video game. A video game is 25-40 hours long, not 2 hours long. It is NOT the same as a movie. Hopelessness for 25-40 hours is an ill-informed decision, especially escalating hopelessness.

Expanding on this point, in most video games, EG survival horror games like (Resident Evil, Dead Space, Wolfenstein, the Evil Within, Silent Hill, etc), you are enduring hopelessness but at a third wall level you know you are the protagonist and you think that you will come out okay in the end. The brutal murder of Joel in the beginning of TLoU2 eradicates any semblance that this is the case. You are enduring actual hopelessness for 25-50 hours. I felt this game was basically the equivalent if as Christopher Nolan decided to make Dunkirk 30 hours long as an artistic vision. This kind of experience is not designed to be 30 hours long and any reasonable person should know that the game needed hope to make it endure, (like as was contained in the first game). Its was as if Neil doesnt actually play video games so he doesnt understand that this is not a movie and how his vision would actually translate into a game.

Expanding further, playing Abby was ultimately repugnant and unenjoyable. This is not toxic masculinity or bias, this is the general consensus and it is strongly correlated with being a "gamer", IE, whether you adored the first game. The character that brutally murdered Joel because her father refused to not murder his (basically), adoptive child is not an ethical grey. Despite condemning the world, western societies are not the collectivist societies of Russia/China, etc. Western societies are individualist societies that value the individual human life. For not even CONSULTING with Joel he has the western moral right, and Abby was in a typical moral wrong, (from the western societal level). Despite any potential redemption path for her, the decision to make you play as her is repugnant from the perspective from any member of a society that values classical liberalism and individualism.

Finally, and a point of contract. Here is my proposal for how the story SHOULD have gone, but why they didnt because current year is 2020. I actually agree that Joel's death could be fitting and even poetic, but not the way he did. If Joel has to die, imagine that they give you the game with him and he dies at the end. The story gives you the whole game to process that BEFORE hand with hints (through context of the story and the situation they are in), that he might die. At least throughout the entire game there is the HOPE that it will turn out okay. Imagine that they come for Joel and murder dozens of people and threaten the town but dont get Joel. Joel and Elly head out and explore the revenge and all the themes the same way. And by the end of it, some sort of conflict/hostage situation has to occur, and right when they are at the finish line, Joel decides to sacrifices himself for Ellie as HIS decision, and somehow throughout the course of the game or at the end he can deliver the same message that the end of this game had, to live her life and not get revenge. This is the story that makes sense, but it was the story that they couldnt tell because they wanted to tell a more progressive story. There is nothing wrong with progressive messages, I think its great to give hope to marginalised groups. But this game decided to decapitate the obvious, beautiful, poetic story.. for a progressive story that didnt make sense.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion a very good game but i didn't like it and i didn't enjoy it at all. The choices that characters took (been written by the directors and writers) seems that doesn't fit with the story and the choices that made in the previous game . Neil and Naughty Dog wrote the story around Joel's death . So they had to kill Joel , but in the game this fact is poorly executed (not cinematography related but storytelling related) . Joel and Tommy decided to trust a complete group of strangers , invited them in their town , gave up their names with no second thoughts . This choice is against the laws of Joel and Tommy as we all know they did terrible things to survive and we see Joel in the first game teaching Ellie about not trusting easily other people in the world of LOUS . So i think that one of the first discussions they had the writers of ND were related about Joel's death . The fact that they choose to break the laws of the characters morals in order to tell another story seems completely off . When you let your characters with their choices develop the story , well , the story actually works feels organic and alive . But when you decide to develop the story around a fact that happens against the character's beliefs ( Joel's and Tommy's mistake to trust a group of strangers) , well, that doesn't tell a story but it puts the characters as puppets and binds them un-physically in a line of storytelling that the writer choose for them (without taking into consideration their personal choices) . All the above , applies to Ellie or Jesse or even Abby as characters . I liked the world , the vision , the cinematic gameplay , the sound , the details , the hard work of people in ND , I even liked the time-line they choose to tell the story ( you see the bed that they cut Yara's hand as Ellie and you don't know what has happened and then you learn as Abby what happened ) . I didn't like the characters and the storytelling at all . Expand

Some of my views still remain positive, graphics, music etc are still good and deserve a better score in isolation.

My biggest beef with the game is it's infuriating linearity and uses too many cut scenes. In new game plus I skipped the majority of the cutscenes and obviously it is normally slightly faster as you know what is coming. IT IS 6 hrs and 30 mins SHORTER..The total playing time for both play throughs is less than 48 hours. AND I AM A SLOW PLAYER.

The linearity of the game seriously gets frustrating. I have played many of the large open world games of recent years and to come back to something this restrictive was a huge disappointment.
They have had 7 years to come up with something better than this. There is no getting lost in this game as it won’t let you go off the path it forces you to take.

The story and characters all have issues Some of them quite serious and annoying. They get more noticeable in a second play through. . No spoilers. Play the game and decide for yourself.

They have even used recycled scenarios from the first game. This is just plain lazy and an insult to the paying gaming community that has to suffer it.

All in all I was super disappointed in this game. I was so looking forward to it and preordered it months ago. I wish I hadn't. I would still have played the game to see what it was like, but would have waited until it was a lot better value for the money.

i did enjoy playing parts of the game, but these in no way make up for the lazy game design and bad character narrative.

IF THIS IS THE BEST IT GETS I HOPE THAT THIS IS ‘THE LAST OF THE LAST OF US ‘.

Ironically the Story is the weakest point of the game. It starts out compelling enough but the decline is steep and steady right until the ending which is criminally unsatisfying. I don´t care about any of the new characters and none of them even come close to Joel and Ellie from the first part.
The game looks amazing and the gameplay is actually very fun. I enjoyed exploring the vast areas of the game, collecting resources, crafting and modding my weapons. The changes to the combat system are minor but sensible. The battles are tense, action packed and brutal.
The Last of Us Part II is not a bad game. I enjoyed playing it and even though the story, the supposed heart and soul of the game, was a sad caricature of the original, I still finished it within a few days and couldn´t lay off the controller. So I can´t honestly rate this game too badly.

If you´re new to the series or don´t really care about it you´re going to have a good time with it, just wait until it´s on sale. But if you´re like me and you love the first game, Part II will leave you with an overwhelming feeling of disappointment.
I don´t think I will ever replay this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My Overall Review:

    The Good:

    - Graphics-wise, in my opinion, looks pretty stunning. But I feel this game would have been suited for a PS5 launch day release then we can see the full capabilities of the games engine.

    - Combat really similar to the first game and I enjoyed it, plus the new additional movements and whatnot.

    - The crafting and upgrade system felt really polish and good. Having the gun benches here and there to custom my weapons was also a nice thing to have.

    - The AI has been improved quite substantially and that was a plus side.

    - It felt more horror like compared to the first release. It had a mix of the Walking Dead and Outlast vibes here and there. For someone who isn't a big horror fan, I did not expect walking into this but at least it kept me on my toes.

    - I really enjoyed the easter eggs like Nathan Drake's ring from the bank in downtown Seattle and the throwback PS3s and PS Vitas.

    The Bad:

    - The way Joel's death was handled. It felt very intentional that the writers decide to kill him off just for the sake of it and hence using that as the entire basis of the game.

    - We were promised that this game was mainly about Ellie but in comparison, I felt that I've been playing Abby for almost 60% of the time and I did not like it one bit.

    - I did not enjoy playing back Abby's backstory because it felt useless, removing this would no doubt make the game shorter but this time, it's quality over quantity.

    - The overall storyline and character development did not feel fluid at all. The game was literally jumping here and there and at certain parts, especially after playing Abby for over 5 hours. I felt like putting my controller down and switching my PS4 off.

    - The ending was also disappointing. From the beginning after Joel's death, Ellie swore in killing every last one of them. But at the very end, I have a feeling that Joel may not have wanted that to happen but Abby's death was well deserved considering the amount of pain and suffering Ellie has gone through... she lost her parents, her surrogate father, one of her closest friends (Jesse) and has put everything on the line just to seek revenge and avenge Joel. But, Ellie decides to let her go... that was a really disappointing part to see.

    What could be done better:

    - If Naughty Dog wanted to have Abby's backstory. Maybe, they should have decided in doing like what they did with Uncharted The Lost Legacy. Keep it as a standalone game and that 10 to 13 hours of gameplay should suffice.

    - The overall plot could have been done so much better. Ending Joel within the first 2 hours of the game was really heartbreaking considering everyone loved the character he turned out to be. Possibly making some sort of death scene at the end of the game, maybe when he dies of old age after going on his last adventure with Ellie would have been a much better approach in my opinion.

    - Also ending it could have been written so much better and I CANNOT emphasize that the ending was nowhere as top tier as the first game. The writers and director honestly could have decided to let Ellie kill Abby considering her dreadful past. I mean that was why Ellie decided to leave her family and go to California anyways...

    Conclusion:

Overall, this game could have taken a much more different route than anyone, even myself would have ever expected. There were too many plot holes which did not make any sense at all. The characters despite a vast majority being fan favorites, except for Abby and the rogue WLF's could have been developed and given far more emotions and a stronger personality. Killing Joel should not have happened and he should not have died in that sense considering how much he and Ellie have touched our hearts from the first game. Yes, I know normally living up to the standards that were already set from the first game will be really tough. But everyone has been waiting for 7 years to see where the gang would be and this was just a major flop and let down to the entire community and the players.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They made a vital mistake in the way they told the story. The fact they reduced Joel and Ellie's relationship to bitter flashbacks killed the drive of the entire story, and killing him off before introducing Abby made it impossible to make the player empathize with her in any way. Really poor narrative choices that ruined an otherwise beautiful game with nice graphics and top of the line play-style customization. Expand

Technically it is a great game: gameplay, mechanics, graphics, music, sound effects... all that is great. But the story and the plot are bad. Really really bad. The first 15 hours are OK, but you go downhill from there.
I cannot understand the disrespect towards the main characters of the first game.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
