This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THIS SITE WONT LET ME POST ANYTHING BELOW 6. THIS IS A 2/10 NOT A **** 6 From someone who believes The Last Of Us part 1 Is one of the greatest games of all time (trust me it’s with Batman Arkham City for me) I was super pumped for this game. But upon playing it with no spoilers going into it I was super disappointed with this product. Graphics were fantastic but We all expected it to be. The story however is awful, truly awful. So many plot holes and dumb choices. And no people I haven’t got a problem with there being trans and gay people leading the game or a woman leading it. Ellie is an amazing character or should I say was an amazing character but man how can you do my man Joel so dirty like this. It’s not even the fact he died cause I expected that but the way you guys done it was just awful. Here’s an idea, why couldn’t he go out in a similar fashion to Arthur Morgan from RDR2?? Also **** abbey, honestly the very worst character I’ve ever seen and as for the cringe sex scene.....Jesus we get it and again this isn’t a problem with her being trans. I don’t want to play a game and there be a “raw” sex scene in it even if it is male on female. I just wanna play and enjoy my game I paid £60 for. Such a disappointment in a time where we needed the opposite Expand

First off, notice the number at the end of the title? That means it's a sequel. A sequel to a game with one of the best narratives in the past decade. I'm not going to spend too much time on the original, but what made that game great was how the gameplay tied in with the narrative. Everything Joel (the player) did was thematically linked to the overall narrative of a story of a father who has already lost one child and is tasked to protect another.

Full disclosure - the gameplay of the first did not particularly stand out to me, but the narrative was strong enough to carry it home. And that is crucial, because the sequel absolutely failed in that regard.

in TLoU2, you control Ellie. No big deal, already done that in Left Behind. I'm going to ignore her actions in this game simply because she's 19. I'm going to give that a pass because you can attribute most of her utter idiocy to teen angst, although even that becomes really hard later on.

However, you do gain control of another character. This character is, without a doubt, the most repulsive character in any video game, and you are forced into the perspective of this character in order to humanise them. I do not mean repulsive in way most detractors would try to frame it - hateful, negative and bigoted. I mean repulsive in the context of a player of a sequel to The Last of Us. Even if this character was Nelson Mandela himself, the actions of him/her would immediately vilify them to the player, with no hope of redemption. It's like if Locke actually killed Master Chief in Halo 5.

While I understand that, in the post apocalyptic world of TLoU, things don't make sense all the time, it does not mean the people living in it have no common sense. Unfortunately, nothing makes sense to the player as the actions of the protagonists in TLoU2 do not resonate like they did in TLoU. For example, if in TLoU you had a choice to save Ellie or leave her with the Fireflies, which would you choose? If Joel actually left her, would that make any sense at all? That would immediately ruin the game and its reputation because of how disconnected that would be to the narrative of the game.

in TLoU2, you are forced into that disconnect, and that cognitive dissonance has genuinely made the game unbearable at times. As a result, the laughable story completely failed to provide a compelling reason to play the game, and this is not helped by the aforementioned average gameplay.

I can make a case for the game being 6/10. It's not broken, it's perfectly playable with excellent graphics and average gameplay. Were it a standalone game, I can see it being a 7/10. However, It definitely loses points for being a sequel. The biggest kicker is when you finally finish the game. You do not look back and think 'I had a good time', because it felt like a slog with no payoff. One can argue it was to drive home the moral of the story. If that is the case, I cannot possibly give the game more any than a 6 because of how hypocritical and self-indulgent Naughty Dog is.

The game had the grave misfortune of making me no longer care about the characters and the story was so abysmal, I was considering trading my two year chip in for the sweet mercy of oblivion.

When it was over and the ending was not satisfying or even a hook to make me care if there is DLC, I docked one last point for that and one particularly horrible scene that I feel should have bumped the game up to Adults Only on ESRB.

I won't join either herd on this take of a hotly debated game. The critics and the audience are both annoying and I've gained a lot more reliable information from playing the game, myself. It is just barely better than adequate on its own and earned all six of my points. But through the lens of nostalgia, I can understand why some users would give it a "3" when comparing it to the prequel and the prequel's DLC.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was a big fan of the first game, and was highly anticipating this one. The visuals and soundtrack are top notch, Gustavo never disappoints. The rest of the game, however, does.

Pretty trees and music can only do so much when games are about storytelling and gameplay. The combat is engaging and entertaining. It's very similar to the first game, and it got a little bit tedious at times; not to mention some of the NPCs have rather clunky AI. Overall, i thought it was solid, and i liked being able to have more options. I only wish they included new combat styles, and the dodge felt a bit bad. The story is what really brought this game down in my opinion, though.

The things I dislike the most about the direction the story went was the fact that so many characters felt, well, out of character. There were some parts i really enjoyed; the flashbacks, and Ellie's quips with Dina. However, Ellie, and Tommy (later on) seemed like an entirely different person with some decisions they made. The way this game treated certain minorities hurts rather than help. it felt they were so focused on including representation that they did it horribly. Joel's death feels unreal, and I know it was meant to feel real and harsh, but it made it impossible for me to like Abby in any way. I think it would feel better if Joel went out protecting Ellie from Abby even. The sex scene was absolutely unneeded, honestly.

The ending felt worthless, everything Ellie did to get to that point and she changes her mind? It felt like everything done in the game was for nothing. Even having the option to kill Abby or spare her would make it infinitely more satisfying for me.

The game does not deserve to be purchased, regardless of its merits (which are few, and overblown). The story works to actively destroys everything the prequel had been building: well-known characters act in opposite ways compared to their previous selves, and new characters are not defined by their nuances and behavior but are just cardboard cutouts marked only by their identity politics group. Naughty Dog has written the Last Jedi and managed to kill a beloved franchise forever.

Even worse, the technical merits of the game are arguably not as good as the prequel. The pretty environments feel now like soulless Quixel asset flips, and the game animations are thousands upon thousands of motion capture segments weirdly blended together by something which feels more like an AI than any kind of human-made plan. The end result is something that looks amazing in a static frame or a small motion segment but doesn't feel right or cohesive once you are playing.

The gameplay has been simplified and dumbed down considerably compared to the predecessor, where it was already thin. Even worse, the changes made are never there to make the game better but to make the developer's job easier. An example is the addition of tall grass as a stealth mechanic, an unwelcome gaming trope that allows them to get away with much worse level design. Multiple issues which were present previously but were unimportant due to the nature of the prequel (inconsistent control response, shooting issues, out-of-control secondary animations getting in the way of your stealth, poor enemy AI, and more), now return but are way more prevalent since the game is way longer, has worse pacing, and the writing is no longer able to carry the weight of the game. It's just a lazy job after lazy job. At the end of the day, this game was not made as something intended to be played, but to be watched. And, since you have zero agency and zero choices during the game, I'd say the optimal platform to play the game is YouTube and not PlayStation.

The entire game feels like it was made by factory robots, except for the story bits, which seems to be written by an Internet troll instead. It deserves a 0 not only because that's how it will make you feel after trying it for a while, but because this is an extremely dangerous trend which can end up destroying the entire AAA gamespace. Do not listen to the dozens upon dozens of 10/10 'professional' reviews which talk nothing about the game's blatant faults and are nothing more than glorified press releases.

You should not buy this game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As an avid fan of the original The Last of Us, I was really looking forward to playing Part 2.
I really liked the direction of the first game, the character development, the whole plot - it’s one of the finest examples in video gaming history. I wish I could forget it, just to experience it all over again.

However, I missed this unique experience when playing The Last of Us Part 2. I remember it as bleak, sad, empty, extremely violent most of the time, with only very few moments of joy. If you’re into that, this game may be for you.

It is is one of the most beautiful looking games available on PS4, with top-notch acting, soundtrack and level design. I'd wish the whole gaming experience was this good either.
Some parts of the gameplay are indeed more elegant compared to the original, but haven't really been improved. Gameplay still feels like the first one, this time with less environment puzzles – here it's just constant killing. I’m fine with violence in games. But I've got no wish to play a dark edgy sequel with one revenge story, that thinks it's being cleverer – and yet comes across as a misery simulator. It makes Ellie into a character that’s one of the worst in video game history.

I always choose story & characters over everything else. Compared to the strong cast of characters from the first game, the new characters are very bland. At some point you’re forced to play as Abby for 10 hours, who I couldn't relate to – or any of her friends. Even if I didn’t agree with her actions, it’s hard not to understand them to a degree. But the whole plot was atrocious and I’m not even complaining about the fact Abbe killed Joel (her father’s killer). I’m fine with that. But why did she kill Joel, after hunting him down for years – but let the killer of her friend and lover go? The game is a petty revenge story but in the end it isn’t. The story just goes nowhere. What did I even play for 25 hours? For me It wasn't a compelling story.

The playable flashbacks of the good old times were probably my favourite part of this game.
Because TLOU for me is and always will be about the relationship of Ellie and Joel. It's what made the first game special.
Of course I was happy when the trailers came out, that teased another Ellie / Joel adventure. Turns out, it was a fraud. Joel wasn't even supposed to play a larger part in this one, they just swapped his character model. I'd call this false advertising and to me it kind of feels like "No Man’s Sky“ all over again. I guess you can't trust anyone these days and I'll think twice before I’ll buy a Naughty Dog game ever again. And that makes me sad to write, because I loved this studio back in the older days.

Overall, the feeling Part II left, is the same after watching Game of Thrones S8. Disbelief. Disappointment. I feel sorry for the developers who have been working so hard on this game for almost a decade. Naughty Dog’s talented enough to make a wonderful and worthy sequel. They just didn’t.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can be said that already hasn't been said? The leaks definitely changed my mindset going into this game, which is unfortunate. I tried to avoid them like the plague, but some still got through.

Let's get out this out of the way. The game on a technical level is beyond anything being done by any Dev out there. It is truly amazing that a PS4 is pushing out these visuals and the sound design is just amazing. On a technical level, my god this game deserves a 20 out of 10! Sadly, graphics aren't the only factor when playing a game.

The story needs to be the glue that holds the entire game together to give you the drive to continue playing and this is where the game falls apart. I couldn't care less about Abby. This has nothing to do with her sexual orientation and everything to do with "WHO IS SHE?" Sure we get a little tiny glimpse into why she hates Joel, but comes on. I waited 7 years to play a sequel to my favorite game and the lead character gets killed within the first hour of the game.

Ok, great, we are going to get a classic revenge story and with Naughty Dog twists, right? Wrong! We now go on an adventure that is way too long for its own good! The game is painfully too long and you start blowing through areas and skipping exploring because you just want it to be over. You don't even know why you are playing. Switching to play as Abby makes me dislike the character even more and then keep forcing you to play as her. I get it from their perspective and story telling and they were really trying to break the mold here, but it falls flat and there NEVER a pay off. Meaning, we are playing for nothing. You play a 30 hour game for nothing, basically.

So basically we all waited 7 years for the most highly anticipated game of the generation and from the jump you have expectations smashed, forced to sit through a VERY long game not caring about half of it because we have no reason to care about Abby or her cause. We don't get the pay off we desperately wanted for Joel's death and it just comes off as lazy, forced writing to make a sequel. This game didn't need to be made from a story perspective, but Sony and Naughty Dog couldn't pass up this pay day.

In the end, I came away so disappointed and this now has me questioning Naughty Dog games in the future. I get they wanted to have that GOT's moment, that Walking Dead "OMG" shock, but they didn't pull it off here at all. They gave me no reason to replay this game due to the length and again due to the fact that literally half the game does not need to be played, forces you to breeze through sections. Maybe that is the reaction Naughty Dog wanted all of us to feel, disappointment? Maybe they wanted to be different and tell us revenge is bad? Who knows, but the story is literally one of the worst and is such a drastic almost unsettling polar opposite of what made the original Game of the Generation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game looks amazing especially if playing in HDR the looks and the attention to detail everything thats visuall within the game looks amazing and ND nails it here. But lets beat around the bush this game hurts through sorrow and hate the same that goes through each and every one of our minds that has played this game the way Joel died, the way Ellie and others went after the WLF to avenge Joel and the journey that has left Ellie completely broken, alone and lost for me it definitely worries me what will happen to all the characters, Dina and JJ what will happen to Ellie and this is my opinion what will happen to Abby and Lev. But let's get down to it who's right and who's wrong Joel for killing abbys dad in the first game or Abby for killing Joel in the second game that's lost me because if Joel didn't have killed abbys dad they wouldn't have been this game but that fact Joel cared for Ellie in let's face it a bad decaying world and left Joel no choice in saving her if the fireflies weren't a bunch of **** to Joel in the first game this wouldn't of happen. Joel did what needed to be done. On the other hand, Abby killing Joel was it truly down to the death of her dad or was it that Joel took the cure from everyone leading to the fireflies been killed throughout the story because they hyped up that they would be a possible cure meaning Ellie and Joel stopping that making everyone think that the fireflies were lying but technically they weren't and dying for it would scare any folk including Abby that's why I think in my opinion its split down the middle did Joel deserve to die come from a mentality opinion, yeah kind of he did piss a lot of people off and unfortunately it caught up to him and he died but did he deserve what happened to him in that basement no not at all Abby's dads death was quick but Joels wasn't it was long and painful with the shotgun to the knee and golf club. Joel and Tommy saved Abby from the infected if it wasn't for them she would have been dead it was in that estate it was life or death rule one of surviving don't tell random people your names its a sign of weakness and Abby clicked on straight away it's him he killed him therefore, she did what had to be done. I had mixed emotions about this game from Anger from the plot of the game to happy when you get to see Joel and Ellie have some time together with the museum being one of the coolest parts of all the flashbacks being and true fan of dinosaurs and space at a young age. The fact you're constantly switched between both Ellie and Abby in the game was night and day especially the one after one in the theatre scenes myself and surly millions of more was like huh? I get it ND was making Abby lost like Ellie at the end that's why I think at the end of all this everyone loses. Ellie lost Joel and others along the Journey sparking her rage and Abby the same way Losing her Dad most likely her Firefly friends that most likely died due to the while cure to her WLF friends that Ellie and Tommy killed to her and Lev getting captured. In this games time nobody wins and it's cruel and unforgiving but that's how it is survival of the fittest and all. Did I enjoy it, in the end, yes and no the emotional sides yes ill admit it some stuff in this game hit me hard but how the story turns out just really didn't cut it just because I've seen way too many revenge plots in games and they all lead down a similar world how the hell is ND going to end up finishing this story I have no idea. Alright, let's go to the merits first.
I enjoyed the cenary, the quality and detail of the worldbuilding was incredible and the physics were fun, even if a bit buggy.
The mechanics were improved on, but still had much of what the first game had, just some additions to give it some flavor, I guess. The sneak mechanic I didn't enjoy, because it's unrealistic that you can always kill an enemy just by grabbing it from behind. Maybe if it had a chance to fail? That would have made it less powerful and more balanced.
The story was unfulfilling and left a sour taste on the mouth of many gamers, me included. For a game that was loved for it's story, such a failure creates most of the divide that we are seeing here in the User Reviews. But let's not put blame on the entire group that developed the game, only on the writers. The fact that you aren't given a choice about your morals makes the moral idea behind the game fall flat. Either give a choice or don't try to guilt trip your players!

    Graphics: 10/10
    Gameplay: 7/10
Story: 3/10 (gave some points because of the flashbacks)

The game is focused on the story (giant amount of cutscenes), so I'm calculating my final score based on the following equation:
    Final Score = [Story + (Gameplay + Graphics)/2]/2
    Final Score = 5.75
    Rounded to...
    Final Score = 6

Although the narrative attempts to weave together a cohesive storyAlthough the game undoubtedly pushes boundaries in its visual presentation and makes some changes to game play- it alone is not sufficient to create the magic typically embedded in Naughty Dog's games, which is their fantastic storytelling. Unfortunately, it is this very aspect that is so poorly executed in this sequel. Although the narrative attempts to weave together a cohesive story predicated of themes such as revenge, and consequence- this is often undermined by characters' uncharacteristic behaviour and excessively violent choices. This is because these actions seem to be intended to generate shock value more than communicate a point. This poor choice of storytelling is only compounded by the fact that the player, themselves, cannot actively choose their actions in this game. Therefore, forcing players to endure a game that seems to take joy in harming players favourite characters seems insanely unnecessary and effectively acts more as torture porn than it does effective story telling. It is obvious that the game seems to critique the consequence free violence that occurs in so many video games, but by removing player agency any such commentary isn't as impactful to the player and only makes them feel condescendingly lectured throughout the storytelling experience. This wound is only rubbed in with additional salt when you are forced to embody an unrelatable character during game play, which the game makes irredeemable and unsympathetic within the first 3 hours of the game. The ending is also exceptionally unsatisfactory, which leaves you pondering what the point of the entire game and its character motivations were about. I understand this was intentional, but if you loved the Last Of Us, as I did, the final scene with the guitar only serves to undermine the memory of those characters I loved even further. Ultimately, to Naughty Dog's credit, aside from the story- by every measure this game has improved upon its predecessor, with better exploration, graphics, combat, stealth (although I don't think it’s as great as the other reviewers have made it out to be, it's still good and I can definitely see why people would enjoy it), and sound there's a lot here for many gamers to still enjoy. So, if you're someone who enjoys having their expectations subverted (The Last Jedi style), then you'll love it like so many in this community has done. But as someone who loves the characters from the first game- this game does such a disservice to them that it has left a permanent bad taste in my mouth and for that I cannot personally recommend it. I hope this is Naughty Dog LAST super violence, brutal, dark and sad game!!!
Game is to make for fun and enjoy and should not make people feel uncomfortable.
An uncomfortable gameplay mechanic that show killing each other violently in detail manner with a full of dark, violence & sad story is not a game at all, it is a devil and abusing experience. It is abuse not just 1 hour, some more

It is abuse not just 1 hour, some more Naughty Dog keep putting all negative content in it for entire game that need player to experience for more than 30+ hours of gameplay, it is too over!!
It is really bad feeling if you play it after you having a stress working day.
Really hope Naughty Dog will no longer develop such negative experience game in future! It is really not an enjoy experience for playing such game even the game technically is very impressive!!

Not a big fan of how naughty dog decided to go along with the story, but the game looks great, has fun combat and is not as linear as the first one. Though the first one is much better.

This game is Okay, the gameplay is good enough (yet it barely even innovates or does anything new compared to the last masterpiece that was TLOU1). The main problem here is the story...the game tries to be something new yet it stumbles and ends up looking like it was written by a very foolish person.

The main problem here is the story...the game tries to be something new yet it stumbles and ends up looking like it was written by a very foolish person.
Joel in this game is not the wise person from the last, and makes a very foolish decision within the first 2 hours of the game; his character just did not remind me of the Joel from the first.

the second problem is that the game throws away the duo of Joel and Ellie - a duo we already loved, a, a flawed duo with issues. Now the developers have decided to make us play as yet another flawed character for no reason at all ( the villain: Abby). Why? people from the very start wanted JOEL. Not Abby or just Ellie. They wanted the duo from the first game!

Third and final point - this game tries to be too realistic and violent for its own good yet it just ends up being stupid and the game seems to forget its characters personalities and in the end the game actually ends up teaching us no lesson or moral at all. Its like the sole reason they have made this game is to show needless gore and tragic deaths. its forced pain. SPOILERS: It does not make sense why Ellie goes on a killing spree, whips one girl to death, kills another pregnant woman... to in the end, let the villain get away... that is just unbelievable and a waste of 30 hours. Killing those who aren't responsible and leaving the one who is? The game teaches us something IMMORAL.

TBH I have not played this game, but I don't need to XD - because the gameplay speaks for itself.

TLOU1 was special for a reason; although its story wasn't something innovative or original by any means - it NAILED, the character development, the lesson of surviving and determination, the storytelling, the balance between cut scene and game play. It did what had to be done PERFECTLY. TLOU2 will never be the game its predecessor was - and the first game in my eyes still remains as the KING.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game looks great, and plays normal...nothing really ground breaking to be honest In terms of gameplay. With only a few problems, the gameplay is a solid 7-8. However, this is not a gameplay based game like Mario or Apex. This is a Narrative driven game and the quality of the narrative and story must be critiqued at a higher standard. Wow are there major plot holes in this game. There is very little back story on characters and little character development for the new characters. Key major events happen but are narratively justified quickly improperly. Don't get me wrong, the game and story is not bad, it's just average. (With high highs and lows lows along your journey) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. On the technical site the game really shines, everything looks amazing, the acting, the emotions, voiceacting everything is brilliant. 10/10 for me. I got to say it kinda felt like Uncharted 4 with TLoU skin, gameplay wise, which in my opinion is not a bad thing as I loved Uncharted 4.

Storywise and this is only my personal opinion and I'm happy for everyone who got what they wanted out of the game and the story. We knew the second game will be really dark and I looked forward to this.

We even knew that Joel would probably not make it and that he would go out one way or the other.. For me personally Joel was my character, I really loved him in the first game and while he may not always made the right decisions, I as a player could still stand behind him because we knew why he did what he did. In the second part we now get to see that some decisions have really harsh consequences.

I generally like revenge plots in games and in movies but I really did not like the way they tried to play it out in this game. Maybe if we would have gotten more time with Joel & Ellie together, how they developed in the years we haven't seen them and then get to know Abby, her struggles, her story of revenge etc. before she gets her chance to complete her revenge it would have resonated better with me.

Playing as Abby after she killed Joel made it hard for me to continue and the end didn't do it for me. I think with a better order of events the same game could have been much more enjoyable. I really tried to feel bad for Abby but in the end she was still the one who killed the character I cared the most about. The story had great moments and I don't want to spoil to much but I think this game is still worth a playthrough. Maybe with knowing what I know now I wouldn't pay full release price but it is what it is.

Ending the game left me feeling empty and unsatisfied, maybe that is what they wanted to archive but honestly I'm not looking forward for a third part.

I would love to give this game a 10/10 but I just can't. I love ND and I see where they wanted to go with this but it just isn't for me, and that is Ok. I think for anyone that is not as invested with Joels Character as I am the game will be amazing. That's why I give it a 6/10 but remember for you this game could be a 10/10 so play it, in the end it's just a game and it is not on us to decide which directions the creators want to go.

On a side note, I really have to disagree with people saying that they pushed some kind of agenda in this game. It didn't feel forced and I think it fits the way the game is designed. Sex scenes are normal in 18+ series/movies and shows a side that is often dismissed in storydriven games.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
