This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review is going to be separated into two parts, the first being my own personal opinion to the game and the second part my reaction and thoughts to what people have been saying about the game.
I am far from completing this game hence why i have given it an 8. So far impressed is not even the word i would use to describe this game, it exceeded graphical expectations that i did not know could be maintained on a console of this generation and its character development was fantastic with how quickly I fell in love with new characters such as Jesse and even more with old characters such as Maria in the short amount of time i saw her. Managing to avoid the leaks Joel’s death was a complete shock to the system that made me feel the same amount of anger that Ellie did, after spending the whole of the first game becoming the character that you play, as well as Dina’s pregnancy reveal throwing a whole other obstacle into the revenge story. Going into the game i had high hopes, however as time drew closer to the release i became concerned that we would have a repeat layout of the first game being, we have a story that surrounds Ellie’s immunity to the fungal virus and we have to go on a country wide quest to find someone who can help, or something along those lines. Although, I was pleasantly surprised that instead of forcing me though a few states that were full of clickers, runners and bloaters we went straight to Seattle and the game takes place here for it’s majority. When it comes to runners and clickers the new types of “zombies” were very refreshing and added a whole other layer of strategy to the game, similarly had felt the same excitement for areas where you’re opposition was both living and “dead”. So overall, this game has been a fantastic experience so far and it’s inclusion of LGBT expression from Dina and Ellie, to a pride filled book store in the first day of Seattle has been especially refreshing as it is not shoving it down your throat it is making them seem like a real couple no matter the gender they act as anyone else would, as well as discrete mentions of religion and other less talked about topics in video games.
A key issue that i have had with the negative reviews of this game is people who have put a review out on the day that they received this game saying they hated it from beginning to end, this game, if played through with proper exploration and is not rushed through is around 30 hours of gameplay, that tells me that the people who have written reviews for this game on the day of release have not taken time to appreciate this game and have missed heartwarming parts of the story that develop the characters a little more, such as Ellie’s cover of Take On Me in the music shop and Ellie and Dina’s conversation of growing old and living life to the fullest in a farmhouse with pets. A game like this is not to be rushed otherwise key points that helped to develop these so called ‘bland’ characters will be missed and will cause you to think this. Also many people seem to have an issue of its portrayal of a lesbian couple and well if you are so disgusted at the sight of two women who are in love kissing on camera then you are growing up in the wrong era because this kind of development in gaming should have happened long before now. Thirdly, many people disliked the game before even properly starting it after 3 hours in and Joel’s death happens people were furious with ‘trashy writing’ and a ‘rushed narrative’ however you have to looked at what Naughty Dog wanted for this game. They wanted a revenge story that the player could relate to so killing off Dina would feel underwhelming and you would not be able to sympathise with Ellie as well as copying the recipe from the first one that worked so well which was killing off Sarah I the first 20-30 minutes, or alternatively if they would have killed Joel off say 10 hours into the game it would have felt dragged out for me. Something i have noticed a lot of people mention is how it is uncharacteristic of Joel to trust someone as quickly as he did with Abby however, look at what we know, he as lived in a perfectly secure and welcoming civilisation wth Maria and Tommy, over those 4 years he has had to worry about outside threats less and less and has begun to see the good in people, therefore he is likely to have gone very soft over these many years, another way to look at it is that he had no other options at the time, they were being chased by a horde and was told of a secure location that according to his response to it, he knew and had likely been to before, so considering his options his judgement was possibly clouded. Overall, I think there is unnecessary backlash, however this has allowed me to appreciate the game even more and look at it from different perspectives

A few improvements and functions were implemented into the game, while others were discarded or downgraded (maybe).

The mechanics in comparison with the first game was a good improvement plus the ambient, locations, global illumination, graphics, sounds, etc.

And since a game is not only composed by the story but also by many aspects, I will be honest. Considering this game tell us a concept about a post-apocalyptic world, I was expecting that the story would not do that well at part II.

For this reason I remove 2 whole points. The story is neither bad nor good, it is as dark and heavy as a horror story (even worse). It describes the reality of human beings living in a post-apocalyptic world and learning with their mistakes, and paying for their acts (or sins).

The characters were also very "reworked" (Joel becomes sensitive and inattentive in comparison with the first game, and other new characters comes from nowhere, maybe not precisely seen on the first game).

It's clear that this game tells us a concept of a world in critical situations, but this was not related in exact at the first game, which made me feel very sad for the Part II (considering part I was also sad from the start to the end).

I was aware of all these points and can understand the bad reviews about the story (which is not a scripted story but a concept), but to be honest, the game is not just the story.

And even if it was because of the story that the game received positive reviews, people must know that this is a negative part of the game (in my case -2 points) and not the whole. The game did not innovate a lot in comparison with the first game, but it followed a good position.

I forgot to mention that from the -2 points of my review, one was considering the unclear launch and confusing organization of the game. The company needs to improve this, and I mean by a LOT, literally!

The first game is scored 10 for me and I recommend it. Now part II... if you like the "script" about Ellie and Joel, consider skipping this game and have fun with TL OU part I and its "DL Cs", because they are quite good.

Now if you don't care about the concept of this game, I would think twice, before playing, because this game has a very distorted and dark (even violent) story. And other than that, mechanics are not deep explored, just a few minorities were implemented.

This game has a very well treated message, revenge and what it entails. A little poorly structured, but the message is the same.
This game doesn't ruin the saga, it only has some errors in the script (deus ex machina). The characters are not taken to a destination that was not expected, only that for the next game they do not have these script errors.

The game has excess gore (violence), but a lot, and the end is an example of it.
I do not like romantic moments.
Abby is poorly introduced into the plot, as the viewer ends up hating her, before knowing how it is (which is the case with most, but not mine).

Having played the game, I’m very happy to say it is one of the best games I have ever played. Never before have I found myself to be as immersed in a fictional world as the one presented in The Last of Us part 2. The combat is engaging and tense and the environments are incredibly fleshed out scenes that always have their own story contained within. The story of the game itself is fantastic and a worthy successor to the first, despite what a bunch of reactionary toddlers on the Internet might say. While the narrative has some elements that hurt its overall impact, it’s rarely enough to pull you out of the story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. I would say from ALL aspects including Abby's sequences; it proved to be a risk well worth taking for naughty dog in my eyes from the shift of antagonist to protagonist. HOWEVER the story seemed unpolished at points and lost the sense of story telling to just getting a message across. I feel that this is partially seen in the ending. This is where Ellie leaves her perfectly happy life only to return to the path of vengeance which ultimately leads her to losing everything along with her fingers, therefore her ability to play the guitar and her last emotional tether to Joel. Not a pretty ending and most certaintly what hardcore fans wanted in the end and the game as a whole.

    STORY
The story could have been told far better by perhaps staging sequences in a different order. So instead of playing as Ellie for 12 hours (Seattle day 1,2,3,e.c.t) then as Abby for 12 hours, they should have bounced between the two perspectives... Ellie day 1 to Abby day 1 and so on. This would give a deeper connection and more care for all Characters in the game especially Abby and others from her perspective. An example of this is Joels murder but before Abby finishes him you play the first abby flash back and then onto the Joel kills Jerry (Abby's dad) sequence. This would have given us the full scope of things rather than this built hatred toward Abby's character, which game later makes makes you play this 12 hour segment as this hated character with NO CONTEXT by which point I felt like putting the controller down and walking away. The only thing that kept me playing was the need to see what happened a the peak of the story which just lost its momentum switching to Abby at the beginning of the entire story; Its like watching a movie to just before the end and then have to go back to the start so your friend can be up to speed with what's happening. If they just played the sequences in order using both characters perspectives, the pacing of the game wouldn't of collapsed and players would have understood what was trying to be achieved rather than killing our beloved Joel unjustifiably.
The ending could have been satisfactory if it ended with the first appearance of the Farm with Ellies family along with tying up the lose ends. however kick starting the whole revenge thing wasn't for me which yet again was more about getting the message across rather than story telling. The way things ended up for Ellie was bleak and unnecessary for the story to extend its self to that extent.

    GAMEPLAY AND GRAPHICS
Gameplay overall was almost exactly the same as the first only with a few adjustments that I found more than substantial.to list a few
    -Dodge mechanic
    -freedom to explore
-Enemy dogs (morally they could have made it optional to take them out/kill them)
    -Ellies knife instead of shivs
    -New gadgets/weaponry
    -New infected
Graphically the game is astonishing and despite all the blow back this is the subject everyone can agree is one or the best on the market for this console generation partially on the PS4 pro accompanied with 4k HDR TV/Monitor. For me this already felt like a "next gen" game just because of the way this game looks.

To summarise this game is deffiently worth the cost, just be prepared for it to cover on some touchy subjects and can tax you as the player mentally. I for one found this game very dark and lingered with me for a couple of days after completing which just shows the effects of some what a good story... just poorly executed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us Part 2 is far from the masterpiece of storytelling the original was, however I would argue that almost all other aspects of the game are improved and are objectively made better, which makes the game still a very enjoyable road.

Unlike many people, I was not bothered by Joel’s death, at least initially. Once the credits rolled I came to hate the games method of storytelling through overuse of flashbacks, personally, I believe the game would have been much better had you spent the first portion of the game focusing on Joel and Ellie rebuilding there relationship before finally having Abby come in a do her thing.

Of course to me, the most glaring problem in the game is Abby. Despite giving the game such a high score I still absolutely hate Abby. Lev on the other hand is probably my favourite character introduced in the game and I thought had the most interesting story to tell.

The gameplay and specifically the combat is what made this game for me, I probably would have scored the game a 6 had it not been for the gameplay which massively improves over the last game. There’s something about the immersiveness of the game that makes the combat so satisfying. One thing I didn’t like about the gameplay is the fact that clickers are much less intimidating and can often be defeated with ease.

Overall I enjoyed the last of us part 2, but the storytelling decisions are very strange at times and the pacing is ruined by the flashbacks, which though great do a lot to ruin the tension of some scenes.

The game has me worried for a possible part 3, however if the gameplay continues to improve I’d imagine it’ll still be an incredibly fun game to play, provided you enjoy this type of gameplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

There’s also lots of new characters and also a new main character called Abby. I do like Abby as a character but felt like I played too much game time as her. I think Abbys story should have been a seperate game. I also think there’s still a lot of unanswered questions about Ellie’s immunity. But overall I thought this was a great game, I feel like some people are too emotionally involved with the characters and that’s why this game hasn’t had the rating it deserves. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I can understand why this is a unpopular opinion, I think most of this game were amazing and well developed. Yes I do believe Abby's story was drawn out and input some pointless details and the while time we were still angry because she killed our protagonist from the first game. However her story shows that she may not have been a bad person or at least no better than any other human trying to survive. And then theres how Joel died, I know some thought it did not do him any justice, but in a real apocalyptic scenario, it's unlikely he would go out a hero, or guns blazing or in some way that made players ls happy. And then there was the end of the game itself, I know personally I was broken, I was sad, and there was no happy ending, Abby lived, Joel was dead, Tommy was injured and begrudging toward Ellie, and Dina and JJ were gone, the last image we see is Ellie walking into the distance not knowing was happening next. Now I thought this ending (though it hurt) was genuine and realistic, Ellie lost more than what she started with, it would be impossible for her to have come out on top, and we see that, we see the price of revenge. And more importantly we see there are not always happy ending. The whole game is a beautiful, sad, and dark masterpiece of storytelling, and an insight into the price of revenge. Though I saw it was highly unlikely I believe that this ending sets up another sequel where we may see, l the ending we want. But until that is announced we must deal with the what we got and understand/ process this unique and realistic form of storytelling. *THIS IS AN OPINION* Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So after half a week of reflection and thought process from finishing this, what I would consider, a pretty dang good game. I do not like Part 2 more than Part 1, but to give this game the same/similar score to Ride to hell: Retribution, is just absolutely asinine. I found that at the start, the game is just way too easy. Even on Hard. After Seattle Day 1 as Ellie I discovered that I could create a custom difficulty, and once I cranked everything to Survivor, except keeping my allies at moderate, I had an absolute blast. Everything became much more intense, each encounter went from the same sneaky-sneak or blast my way through with ease, to being unique and different. The enemy became much more aware, items and ammo was much more stressful to find and use. It forced me to rely on all my resources and assets in creative and "on my toes" kind of ways/thinking. It made me feel like I was fighting for my life in a very realistic way. So I think it was meant to be played on Survivor. The combat and gameplay was never the highlight of the first game, so I didn't expect much in terms of improvement, and just the added fluidity and polish to it was more than enough for me. It's a Part 2, not a complete redesign.

In terms of story, I feel it was pretty solid. Not as focused as the first game, but we weren't even supposed to get a second. It is not the most realistic thing to expect a follow up that wasn't supposed to exist to out do a story that was supposed to be a "one and done". So to come from a story about love, and change it to hate... I feel the story does just fine at making me feel that. People don't like that Part 2 doesn't make them feel good... it was never supposed to, and maybe then the post pandemic survivor games and stories aren't for you if you don't want to feel bad. In the world of TloU, there are not clear good and bad guys, only people desperate to survive another day. Joel was never a "good" person. He has done things to hurt innocent people, he was never a "hero". He doomed humanity for its chance of a total comeback for selfish reasons. And that's just it, the game is about the characters, not the player. A lot of people are mad at the wrong things. Most are mad that Joel dies. His death was unfair, but not because YOU the player like Joel, but because the world that Joel is a part of is unfair. People are mad because you don't kill Abby in the end, while I wish I got to cut her throat, the story is not about what I want. It is about Ellie. Her choices, and her consequences of those choices. And just like she decided to try and start forgiving Joel for taking away what should have been her choice to save the world, she in the last second sees that killing Abby is not who she is, and not who she wants to become. This entire journey takes a HUGE toll on her, and she loses everything because of it. Just because someone is a main character of a story does not mean they deserve a happy ending. Just because the player likes the character doe not mean killing or treating them unfairly is a bad thing. Given the context of this whole TloU Universe, it completely within reason that it ends the way it does. The world does not cater to anyone. Especially the world of TloU. A character named Jesse did not 'deserve" to get shot in the face, but he did. Because we are playing a game in a world that is unfair and all about surviving. In the end the game is not a story about revenge, it is a story about forgiveness. Both Abby and Ellie suffer so much from the choices they make. Abby kills Joel and all the people she cares about die. Ellie goes on a blind mission of revenge and loses everything, she's left with no one. she loses more than Abby because Abby gains something in her story, she gains possibly more than Joel ever did in the first game.

My biggest issue with the story isn't because of anything that happened, to me it all makes sense. There are some "for shock value" moments that felt a bit too manufactured to get a rise out of the player/me. But the biggest problem I have is the way it's told. You play through 3 days in Seattle as Ellie, then you jump all the way back and play through those same 3 days as Abby and see her perspective. I feel the narrative would have been much more impactful if they ran parallel to each other. It would have made every death and every interaction more impactful. Seeing characters that Ellie kills hours after she kills them made me just not care enough about them to get invested in who they are, because I knew they would die.

There may be some heavy handed things in this game, but it is not about us the players, it is about the characters. When Ellie gets attacked by a dog and almost dies, Ellie is going to kill the dog. You do not get to spare the dog because Ellie wouldn't spare the dog. All linear games force you to make the choices of the character you play as, why attack TloU Part 2 for not being and any different in that regard?

The graphics and the music are 10/10. The gameplay is great, although it's basically the same as in the first game with some extra mechanics, and it gets a bit boring sometimes. And finally, the plot... oh boy... Gotta say it could be much better, they just picked a wrong direction as to where they wanted the story to go. And some plot points were... questionable. But i was engaged into the story and i felt for the characters, which is, in my opinion, not so bad.

    Soundtrack: 10/10
    Gameplay: 8/10

Total: 8.75 (making it 8 because of some minor political agenda, but it's 2020 so nothing terrible)

Graphics, quality, sound, etc, amazing. The story is completely fine, nothing wrong.I would like to explain why.A beloved character from the first game gets tortured to death by ABBY.This part made people mad and I understand cause I was pissed to,but as I got deeper in I really felt the urge of getting revenge and everyone knows what they were getting there selves into since this was a revenge story;moreover, playing as Joel's killer also made people mad, which I understand, but isn't it interesting to see Abby's part of the story and see why she did what she did.Overall I enjoyed the game and would recommend playing it.Let me know your thoughts on my review. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
