The game is not a masterpiece but a very good game. Gameplay mechanics in comparison with the first part seems more "alive". Well-written characters, interesting fights, large locations, as well as wonderful graphics give a storm of emotions. I recommend everyone to get acquainted with this game (of course, after passing the first part).

First off I loved the first game so most of the complaints I get as far as the story goes. So if you’re looking to recapture the feelings of the first game you will be disappointed. I completely understand the anger for this game. But giving this game a 0 is doing your fellow gamers an injustice. So is saying it’s a 10 to counter all the zeros. I played this game to the end and took a day or so to digest this so I can give this game an honest review. Ok so the story does little to no justice to the characters of the first game. The very beginning is a nice tie in to the first game I thought it gave a nice follow up to the end of the other game ( before the major event that has everyone upset). The flashback scenes scattered throughout the game at points I felt also worked well with the first game’s story. The rest however was hard to wrap my head around. I chose to look at the bulk of the game as a dream sequence or an alternate universe lol. (It worked for me that way) Playing that way or not having an attachment to the first game and it’s characters It’s actually a good game. The story on its own I thought was well done overall and wouldn’t get the hate I feel if this wasn’t part 2 of a beloved game. Won’t spoil anything but the second half is a complete shift. So if you look at it as they are intending it’s quite interesting and makes you think. Which is something I can honestly appreciate. Graphics are amazing everyone seems to agree there. You can see the amount of work that was put into this game for sure. Found myself admiring the littlest things. Gameplay is good very familiar if you played the first game (with improvements). Definitely a violent game but I don’t feel it’s brutal just to be brutal. It works with the concept of the story they are trying to tell. Gotta say overall I did enjoy this game just for different reasons and not to the extent of the first game. I can recommend playing it IF you can look at it the way I did or don’t have a major attachment to the characters. It’s just really hard for a lot of fans of the original to get past that one scene early on and understandably so. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just beat the game today. I feel so sad. I feel so depressed. I feel miserable. I feel like there’s a whole in my chest. Rely on the reviews played by actual people who’s played the game. I’ve been thinking about this game for the past couple days playing it. I’m still processing the game. There’s a difference between a bad game and a game you don’t like. It’s not a bad game. It’s a game I don’t like (not like terrible) but because it’s so miserable. It was meant to be like that. It was meant to made you feel. I feel like I was on a roller coaster of feels while playing this game. No game has ever made me feel like that. It’s not perfect. It’s a game you aren’t meant to like. I’m still processing the ending. I feel very incomplete. I’ve seen a lot of people say the ending isn’t what they wanted and I totally understand that. There’s a loop of getting revenge, losing things, going back out and getting revenge and losing more. There was a cycle and Ellie finally broke the cycle. But at what cost? I want to be happy for her because she grew as a character but I can’t because she lost everything. Lost everything to get to where she was.
Abby’s part of things: I never liked her. Ellie’s part of things at the beginning was perfect. A perfect 10/10 but when we played as Abby I lost interest. I didn’t like her. The tie in was kinda cool. The fact that you shot someone random in the first game turned out to have such a HUGE part in the next was cool. At the same time I didn’t care about her. They introduced her so early in the game killing our favorite character. I don’t know why they thought we’d like her or even care about her. I couldn’t sympathize with her. I understood her but I didn’t care. It was too long with her. You built such a strong connect with Joel and Ellie in the first and with Ellie in the second. You kill Joel at the start and play as Ellie for only a half of the game, I didn’t like that. I feel like a separate game with Abby would’ve been cool but don’t throw her into this game.
With Joel it was tough. I understand a lot of people were mad with him dying so early, me included, the way he died. We didn’t get time to explore his and Ellie’s relationship and figure things out. It didn’t give Ellie time to mourn, to really understand what had happened. I would’ve liked to have seen that explored a lot more. His death could’ve been so much more. He was the hero of the last game and we lost him immediately.
This was a sad, gloomy, miserable game. It scared me and depressed me. It was hard to play it for an extended period of time because it was so depressing. It was a great game. It was supposed to be a game you didn’t like. I would knock off a couple points for the Abby crap and killing Joel so early I’d give it a 7 or 7.5. But it’s the last of us so 8/10. Don’t listen to reviews. Play it on your own. Play it on your own time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before I begin, I would like to specify that I have played through this game twice now, once on survivor and once again on survivor+, meaning I have a total of around 46 hours with the game. I would also like to clarify that I did love the first game, but I have never considered myself a Last of Us fanboy by any means. To open, I really, really enjoyed this game, for about 80% of my TOTAL time playing it. Hence the 8/10. To get the obvious out of the way, the game is gorgeous, the soundtrack is impeccable, the acting is great, and the gameplay was a HUGE step up from the first game for me (although I know many disagree). I also think that a lot of the story on Ellies side was executed well, although the writing itself definitely falters in depth and meaning. The fact that I was able to like Jessie and Dina AT ALL with how little we know about them and how shallowly they are written really goes to show how top-tier ND's performances are. The other 20% was unfortunately spoiled by the controversial, yet understandable structural decision to play as Abby, (who is both the primary antagonist and the secondary protagonist), for almost HALF of the games runtime. I understand why ND did this, as on paper it sounds like a very good way to add meat to an otherwise empty revenge plot, but it obviously did not work out as intended. I believe this is for a few reasons, and I would like to talk about most of them briefly. First of all, we have no connection to Abby prior to her golfing session with the old man. The primary character we have all been in love with for 7 years is taken out, and we're excepted to then sympathize with his murderer. Once again, I believe that this choice seems good on paper, but due to other faults with Abby, it fell far from the mark. This story would have had to have been executed perfectly in ever single way for it to have had a chance of landing with the audience. To elaborate more, the characters on Abby's side are utter garbage. It wouldn't be so bad, but before we even begin the Abby storyline we have the knowledge that Ellie kills literally all of them. This doesn't work, we already know they're dead. We have no reason to connect, and even if we did they are so shallow in their intentions and have one or two "values" that they spit in our face the whole game. Mel is passive, and hates Abby for both her brutalism and her past with Owen. Owen is a go with the flow kinda guy, who isn't passionate enough about his cause to continue on anymore. These are literally their primary personality traits. I think this is the games primary problem. By the time I got to the bulk of Abby's story, I wanted to stop playing. I didn't care about the characters, the gameplay was starting to get repetitive, and all I wanted was to see how the conflict in the theatre played out. HOWEVER, this completely changed on the 2nd playthrough. On the second time through, I had grown close enough to Abby through her final chapters in the 1st that I didn't mind her sections at all, in fact I think they are objectively better from a level design and gameplay perspective. Anyway this reviews kinda long already, but my point is that this game is like movies that you don't understand the first time. Give it a second go, and do so with an open mind. Overall great game, I was only being so critical because it's a direct follow-up to arguably the best narrative driven experience of all time. Expand

And this game is about ellie and her story ,should not be about abby if so why make the ellie edition and the playstation with her tattoo and Advertise Ellie so much and make us play abby half the game I would have been fine with maybe 2 hours to explain her reason why and some context of why she did it that's fine. But this should have been just about ellie and her journy.the graphics are beautiful the game play is pretty fun but the story did not cut it they should have made a happy ending not such a bad ending where you do kill abby and ellie gets to have a happy and peaceful life with dina and the baby that would have mad every one happier but they **** up that's it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A fair honest review from my opinion. Played on survival mode. Took 27hrs to finish. Took my time looking for everything the game had to offer.

Literally made this account to give the game some good press. I really dont see the problem people are having it's a really good game. Yes Joel dies and its rough to accept but to be honest it's nearly expected. Least they weren't afraid to kill off a main character. Even better that it was early cause I thought it fueled revenge mission even better. Was not expecting the twist at all were you would play as Abby for the second half of the game. You get a completely different perspective on the story. In her shoes I dont blame her and for what she done, just wasnt expecting a full side of the game based on her. Overall I thought her story was enjoyable and basically giving the chance to play as the villain while the stuff was happening that you did in the first half. Even though you start to like the character by the end of the story I still wanted Ellie to finish the job. The game should have give a choice to kill or let go like the previous game. There could have been a few instances were choices could have affected the story. Gameplay itself is excellent. The gun combat and stealth system is top notch. Can really feel every bullet, club, knife and explosion hit home. Some of the kill scenes are brutally violent I love it. The zombies are horrific as usual and fun to deal with. The introduction of dogs made human combat more interesting and definitely forced a full on gun fight on some occasions. The upgrade system was decent even for a story based game like this. Could have done with a few more open areas like they introduced early in the game. Most of the game is pretty linear but there are multiple ways to get the job done. Some of the areas are big enough and I really enjoyed the looting aspect and finding supplies. I played the game on survival mode but overall didnt have to much hassle for supplies. Always seemed to have enough of everything. By the end I had nearly all the guns upgraded and both characters nearly fully upgraded perk wise. I would play stealthy but there was a good few instances of straight up gun fights which were a nice change of pace. Really needs that grounded difficulty which hopefully comes out at some stage. Graphics are some of the best I've seen this generation. Just everything looks amazing. Sound and music design too absolutely top notch. Few scenes with headphones on were brilliant with the surround sound really gave a full fear factor in some scenes. Hospital comes to mind with Abby.

Overall for me I really enjoyed the game. The gameplay and graphics are some of the best of this generation. Naughty Dog definitely took some risks story wise that I would say almost payed off. I would have like to have more choices in the decisions of the story. Other than that I think the twists are great and I got a few shocks regarding some of stuff that happens. There could have been more backstory to the likes of Abby and more interactions with Joel and Ellie. I see a lot user reviews bombing the games story but I think they were expecting something different were everyone survived. Naughty Dog made a good game here. But it could have been a great game. For me the story is the only let down but I'm still rating this story at a fair score.100% will play the game again when it more than likely comes out for PS5 with hopefully a grounded difficulty.
    Graphics/Sound 10
    Gameplay 9

Overall a fair 8. Super game with brilliant gameplay and graphics with a pretty loose story compared to the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game really isn't that bad. I was a fan of the first game, played it 14 times. I actually played and finished this game, currently going back through for the Platinum. The graphics, gameplay, sound, and music were all wonderful and there are certainly impressive improvements from the first game. If the leaks and reactions didn't come out before the game I'm sure reactions and reviews would be so much different now. I will be thinking about the ending for a long time though because it falls short for me in that we don't know what's next for Ellie. I think it would be a cool feature if we could have made a choice as to how the ending played out, whether Ellie would go back after Abby. Some of the gore and shock value things (showing dead Joel multiple times, killing dogs, the killing a pregnant woman trope) were a little cheap. One of my favorite aspects of the game was how much it mirrors the first game (the scene in the museum vs. the scene with the giraffes, Abby & Lev vs. Joel & Ellie, Joel trusting Abby and her group vs. Joel trusting Sam & Henry, Tommy & Jackson, Marlene & the Fireflies).

What I'm stuck on: The story leaves me disliking both Ellie and Abby. They both have awful coping skills. Of course I don't like the way Abby killed Joel. I don't like how Ellie handled his death and willingly gave up everything because she couldn't find a way to mourn that didn't risk other people's lives. I think that things would have been better for her if she just learned to express her grief in healthy ways to Dina and Tommy instead of straight up acting on her feelings. Abby has a similar way with Owen. I think in some ways only showing happy/positive flashbacks between these characters kind of counteracted building empathy for where they are at that point in real time in the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Combat is much improved version over the first game, but plays in a similar way that really shines at higher difficulty levels.. Visuals are amazing, even on a launch PS4. Puzzles are less boring than they were in the first game. The main thing holding it back is the ambitious but messy narrative that is hit-or-miss. It's a shame people are review bombing this and not playing the game before reviewing.

To anyone salty about Joel. Joel was a bad person. He was obviously going to get what was coming to him after all the bad he had done. I don't understand why this is surprising to anyone. The execution wasn't perfect but it definitely made sense for the story.

Abby is a well-developed character. Her story arc is similar to Joel's in the first game. Bad, hardened person and redemption by taking care of a child. Her rescue of Lev at the end where she just killed everyone on both sides is also similar to Joel's actions to save Elly. By the end of the game I liked her a whole lot more than I liked Ellie. In fact, I think the way Ellie was handled is one of the weaker aspects of the game. While Abby's friends were interesting and made sense, the game failed to really give Dina and Jesse time to shine in Ellie's story. Tommy's turn at the end also doesn't quite feel earned. Dina abandoning the farm didn't make much sense for me either. Actually, the whole ending felt a bit rushed and could have been a whole game itself.

I think many of the players forgot that neil druckman said that this game is more about hate and the post apocalyptic world. If you wanted a the last of us 1- esque game here you were completely wrong in the first place. Like dont get me wrong, the game really has his problems for example joels death comes way to early and the ending is just not satisfying even tho the ending makes sense. I totally get the idea behind TLOU2 but the pacing just was a bit of. My biggest problem with this game was the parts with joel, they were way to short and i would loved to play with ellie and joel together. We only get that here in the flashbacks (which are great btw). Secondly the parts with abby were nice if you look at it frome the gameplay perspective, but they felt just too long.
We are left here with a good the last of us post apocalyptic world experience and some very nice emotional touches and smooth gun and fight gameplay. it does not come close to the original the last of us but its still a great game. Hence why I give it a 8/10. Try to look at this game from a deeper perspective and you will get the beauty of it!

Finished the game in 25 hours on the medium setting. Technically the games amazing, can't fault the graphics, sound, or mo-cap. Story the game had a lot to live up too, and fell at a couple hurdles. If you don't like dark and violent stuff give it a miss because those are turned to 11. The game handles some topics very well and nothing feels hamfisted or forced. Not perfect but still worth a play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It seems the vast majority of people who dislike this game were simply after fan service Joel and Ellie adventures. This game tells a story which creates such a vividly rich image of the world it’s set in.

It provides a unique take on storytelling that deviates from the main characters and shows the new perspectives of all characters involved, and after the initial frustrations of not wanting to play asr the bad guy because they’re ‘bad’ you begin to empathise with their motives are eventually see that they’re life runs as a parallel to that of Ellie’s. They’re just two individuals caught up in a cruel world where life is so painfully cheap.

There is no plot armour, characters are just people in all their complex glory.

This game is a must buy if you enjoyed the first one, the story is gorgeously pulled off once you understand it breaks the tradition of standard storytelling. And of course, the gameplay is scaled up tenfold from the first instalment, every moment feels satisfying and visceral. And holy **** does it look and feel amazing, the atmosphere and immersion in this game is like no other.

Don’t listen to the review-bombers who hate any notion of LGBT in their games (which by the way feels incredibly natural in this game and not forced at all). Play the game yourself and form your own opinion, I loved this game for doing something different whilst still staying so brutally ‘The Last of Us’.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
