Great game with gorgeous graphics and animations. Gameplay is solid and very good. Never been so conflicted between 2 main characters, Abby and Ellie are real humans from flesh and blood and it's so well written. Only downside are the side characters, they don't flesh them out so much like in the first game.

but you MUST FINISH THE **** GAME TO REALLY ENJOY IT
The SJW- section of this game is not only minimal, but fairly well done, and for the most part fades into the background unless you're looking for something to be mad at.
    SPOILERS BELOW
It is absolutely essential to finish the game to maximize you're enjoyment, but man. It's gonna get hard to finish. This game is AT LEAST 5 hours too long, the first game works because it tells a simple story, with heavy character buy in, you understand their motives, and that even the unacceptable things you do are essential in some way to the task at hand. For this game, the task at hand is far less motivating. STILL. I LOVE all the side characters, I love Lev, I love Dina, I love Jesse, and i love Tommy, on that front the performances, and animations are great.
    THE GAMEPLAY
IS HUGELY IMPROVED FROM TLOU 1, it is much more fluid, much more of a game, much more fun, and playful, and will be MORE RE-PLAYABLE. AND THIS COMES AT THE DIRECT EXPENSE OF THE STORY..
This said, there are 2 mechanics that severely hamper the gameplay, and are not super welcome. You can figure out how to deal with them, but the more time you are willing to spend on each "stage" the better your experience will be, and depending on how you play games, your mileage will vary.
    Shamblers are AWESOME! Very welcome
New NPC skins, and new sneaky kill- plus dismemberment mechanics are BEAUTIFUL
    BACK TO THE STORY
It is dark, and depressing for MOST of the game. It is hard, you never feel like you're playing as a good guy. You never feel like you're doing the right thing. If you stop at the wrong time on your first day of playing it MIGHT spoil your WHOLE GAMEPLAY, which shouldn't be able to happen, but in this game it really might. It tells you for 25+ hours that the story is about 1 thing, drawing parallels between the characters of the past game, and drawing new boundaries about what can constitute a protagonist with them still being a "good guy". This all culminates in a terribly misjudged portion of the game which I purposefully failed multiple times where one character hunts another character who you like much much better. And this is PURELY because she's not so charismatic. It would be like if you saw Black Widow in the Avengers killing children, and then they showed you Captain Marvel breaking her arms and you were supposed to root for her. AND THEN in the final 3 hours of the game, it pulls a switcheroo on you and tells you that what it was telling you about was all wrong, it shows you that it was about what it means to lose love, the pain, permanence, and persistence of losing someone you love, that there's no way to return that person to you. You will never be whole again, and it leaves some beautiful homages to the original game which WORK, but you MUST get to the end to get that, through a story that is TOO LONG. It makes sense by the end, but it takes too long to get there. Please just be patient, and it's beautiful. The timing is wrong and part of that is because you can tell the writer was unsure whether he could write this while assuming people played the first game (which is misplaced humility), but by the end it rewrites itself and gives you something worthwhile.
I will also say, after I finished it, I was totally ready to be done with it and immediately lent it to a friend. But then I haven't been able to go a day without thinking about it, it is stuck in my head, and the way they weave the picture IS masterful. It's not perfect, but it is almost still a masterpiece. It's not as good as the first game, because there's a lot of innocence and youth in the first game. This one is much darker, but it gives you some light in the dark at the end, so please just finish the game, and please be open minded about this story. It is excellent, not perfect, but it is beautiful and excellent. Please play it, please finish it, please think about it

If you enjoyed the first game, then this is an excellent follow-up. The gameplay is polished to the extreme, and I really do think that it is significantly better all around this time around.

This is definitely the most memorable Naughty Dog game I have played.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is similar to the last of us, but different and introduces new forms of play. Laying in grass, and avoiding dogs are wonderful additions and allows for multiple styles of gameplay. The weapons bring some of the old ones back while adding a suppressed weapon and the crossbow. Story: the story while it can be hard to stomach some of the choices, it’s easier to understand as you go and while it breaks your heart early, I feel like that semi realistic game we had in the first is brought back in TLOU2 and I’m blessed to have played this game. I keep thinking that a change could’ve been made, but at the end of the day. I think they made the best story possible. I think if they had separated who you played into smaller sections leading up to the end. It would’ve been more to stomach. Plus throwing Joel’s death in so early on was a mistake. I feel like it should’ve been somewhere near the end when Ellie tells Joel that she wants to forgive him. I don’t write games or have any idea how to make a script. This game is great. Something everyone should play and I hope the story doesn’t end there Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I personally enjoyed seeing/playing Abby’s story because it made me realize how surprisingly similar her and Ellie are. It makes me somewhat understand why she killed Joel.(although it’s still rather upsetting that they killed him within 2 hours of gameplay, we haven’t seen this guy in 5 years and he’s dead within the 2nd hour?!). I can see where Naughty dog was trying to go with this and i do think they touched on some important topics in the game as well. I personally enjoyed their sort of nod to the lgbtq+ community with Lev’s storyline. I think it truly showed how some trans people are easily outcasted and shunned from their homes/communities due to things like that. I will say the ending did leave me feeling almost dissatisfied in a way. But in the same breath i think the cycle of revenge and hatred does that to any set of characters, it’s not supposed to be wrapped up in a bow at the end. I think the story telling could have obviously improved in areas but overall i think the storyline makes sense and i can understand why they make Abby such a vital character in the 2nd part. Expand

In the beginning, I did not like where the story was headed but eventually, I started to like the story. The graphics are amazing and the gameplay was not bad. This game, in my opinion, is not for everybody and is only for players who are willing to spend long hours every day in order to finish it. Overall, one of the best games on the PS4.

It feels more inclusive as well, without feeling performative. In the interactions I saw bits of myself or people I know reflected, which was nice.

I very much enjoyed the gameplay as well. It kept the things I liked from Part 1 and added some new quality of life improvements.

Another strength are the plethora of accessibility options. While I don't need any specific accommodations with regards to my gameplay I still found some functions there useful to use. (Stuff like automatically picking up items, for example). This helped improve my fun in playing.

I would absolutely recommend this game if you're someone who likes a nuanced narrative where your ideas may get challenged. If you prefer a game where you don't want to think about morality and want to shoot at stuff this may not be the game for you, and that's fine too.

Don't judge the game or the plot by the user reviews, i specifically created a metacritic account to write this review and counter all the review bombing wich is objectively really unfair... All this talk about not respecting the carachters is nonsense : as users we don't get to vote on wichever direction the creators should have taken. People are unhappy about the plot choices but if it were otherwise they would complain on how its too predictable and on how they took no risks... Every gamer needs to try tlo2 because at the end of the day all you can do is appreciate all the work that's been done on this. Thanks to all the devellopers and naughty dog for this unique experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a **** piece of art. Im gonna break down why. Naughty dog wasn't afraid to kill Joel, straight away. The is a **** post apocalyptic world game. No one is invincible, and sad as it is Joel had already began to get old. This part gives us more insight and background on the fireflies, and it's **** brutal. I've never been more sad at a game, but that's how life is. The game is hyperrealistic, from game mechanics to telling stories within just found notes. It also is in the way that diversity is properly shownn. I can guarantee you the only people angry about this game a cishet white snowflakes that aren't used to playing a game so diverse. Also, the debate on Abby's appearence is utter **** if you care that much about a video game characters body build you must have some sort of I security issue. The last of us 2 makes some hard decision story wise, and there were some points in the game I questioned whether they were the best decision to make. But I'll stop my rant saying this: life is impulsive and sadistic already. Imagine living in that world. This has got to be the best game I've ever played. And if games like this continue to get made I'm so ready for it Expand

I am not going to spoil it, but trust me, IT IS WORTH IT.

And I haven’t began with the soundtrack yet. It is perfect for a post-apocalyptic world like this. The songs are so great that you will want to listen to them again and again, reliving the moments of the game.
The only thing that TLOU2 did not really develop is the side characters. They are there... and they are helpful... but you don’t really care about them that much. One the other hand, however, there is more time for the main characters to develop and it is worth the loss.
I highly recommend it only after you finished the first part. It is a world perfect for complete immersion of the player.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really I'm giving it an 8.5. 8 just seems too low.

    SPOILERS.

    OK. I'm confused.

I was fortunate enough to avoid most of the leaks, but two things I did see were A) You play partly as Abby, who's a transsexual villain and B) Joel dies (I didn't see how). For the whole game I was waiting for some big reveal that would show that Abby was transsexual...it never came. One of the main reasons people were so angry about the leaks were that she was trans. Just complete and utter nonsense. The way this game has been review bombed with 0's and 1's and 2's is really weird and honestly embarrassing.

There are problems with this game, absolutely. Some real problems. But if you're bothered that Abby is muscly...weird. If you're bothered that Ellie is a lesbian...weird. If you're bothered that a side character shaved her head because she wants to look like a boy...weird. Is it fueled with agenda? Sure. Is it pushing boundaries? Absolutely. Should it mean you score it with a 0 out of 10? Absolutely not.

Starting with the positives...what a GAME this is. I'm no gaming expert so I'm going to struggle to get all the words out correctly. But as a GAME (separate to the storyline), it doesn't get much better. Insane graphics, probably the best I've seen. The fluidity is flawless. Animations are incredible. I personally love the changes in pace between action and taking it easy. Gun play feels very satisfying. Enemy AI is very good (and adjustable). The zombies are scarier then before. The minor details are there. Sound wise it's incredibly eerie and atmospheric. The moment where you first come across the Scars and get hit with the arrow...I jumped out of my seat! The high pitched whistle, the deep throng of petrifying music as you pull the arrow out of your shoulder. Just amazing. I've seen the gameplay be labelled as boring and not worthy of a PS4 title, and I genuinely find those opinions laughable. The gameplay lived up to everything I expected. Such an improvement on part 1 (which you would expect after 7 years). But how about the story?

This is where I do have problems, and can't help but feel a little disappointed. I'm the biggest fan of part 1...my favourite game of all time. And a huge part of that is down to the incredible story...the connection between Joel and Ellie, the emotion in the cut scenes, every character that was introduced along the way, how the narrative twisted and turned. Just a phenomenal story. I did have a feeling that Joel's decision at the end of part 1 would come back to bite him. But did I think it would bite him like THIS? 2 hours into the game, with no context as to why Abby wanted to do it, after having PLAYED as Abby?! For the record...I have no issue with Joel dying. I don't even have an issue with the way in which he died. It was shocking, powerful. You felt a sense of dread. When the final blow lands and the sound goes to that high pitched screech like you yourself have just suffered a bang to the head. It was very well done. The writers are entitled to take the story how they see fit, and if that means Joel dying, so be it. I'm sad about it, I loved him, I didn't want him to die. But if that's the direction they wanted it to go, OK. Some people in these reviews have been acting like spoilt children. The problem I DO have is A) the fact we had no context as to why it was happening, B) How lucky Abby was to find herself in that situation and C) Not getting to experience the immediate reaction.

I feel it would have been better for Abby to infiltrate Jackson first. Become a member of the community. We could learn about her back story. We could understand why she wanted to kill Joel. THEN we could switch to Ellie trying to get revenge. Asking the player to be as understanding as what Naughty Dog want is dangerous, and clearly in this case hasn't really worked. And one thing I loved from the first game was the emotion, how it would have me on the verge of tears at times. The scene where Sam dies and Henry turns the gun on himself. The scene where Ellie explains to Joel how everyone she cared about has left her or died. I didn't get any of that from this game. The reaction to Joel's death is rushed. The game seemingly doesn't care about Jesse dying. The flashbacks with Joel and Ellie both could have been more emotional, fleshed out and satisfying. That's my main issue.

I ended up liking Abby. During the final fight sequence I was pressing buttons I didn't want to press, begging Ellie not to do it. I was glad she didn't. But even the way that came about, Ellie leaving practically a dream life with Dina and the baby behind, seemed silly and forced.

All in all I think it's an amazing game, slightly let down by a cluttered story, which tries so hard to make you side with a new character. The Last Of Us is Ellie's story. And I really hope they do a part 3 with a stronger narrative and a happy ending for a character we love so much.

Obviously no game comes without its flaws such as one of the characters who I won't name, in general she felt almost put there for it to work at first, but then the game shows as to why she is there, what her goals are and what made her walk down the path she is. I don't want to say too much more because it's difficult to not spoil it, however I would 100% recommend this game and it truly DOES NOT deserve the review bombing or the death threats, people really need to learn that the story of a game can't always go their way and simply that if they don't like it, shut up, grow up and move on.

Many people complain about the story. Obviously it's not as good as the first 'The Last of Us' but that does not make it a bad story and although it's just 'John Wick' except Joel is the dog, I found the story satisfying and a good enough follow up to the 2013 original. The only parts that really bothered me was Abby's side of the story, not only because I had to play as the woman that killed Joel but because her character is quite inconsistent with her actions and just as you think she's found her humanity through caring for ex-seraphites: Lev and Yara, she shows no hesitation to commit horrible acts not so long after. This problem affects some of the characters from the original but is reasonable as it's realistic that people would be different than they were 6 years ago.
    Story = 6/10
On the other hand, the audio, visuals and gameplay of 'The Last of Us II' is what makes this game incredible. At some points I didn't know whether a sound was from the game or somewhere in my house, bloody brilliant. The graphics are better than they've ever been, i wish real life looked as good. Some scenes looked as if they were taken straight from a painting backed by some beautiful scores and white noise to immerse you to the fullest extent.
    Graphics and Audio = 10
The quality of the combat depends on what difficulty you play on, if you play on the easier difficulties it will make for more options when dealing with a group of enemies, with more resources and more predictable enemy paths, but from my experience on Survivor difficulty I saw Ellie transform into Solid Snake having to make every shot count, managing the scarce resources that you have which makes for a harder but more satisfying combat system.
Apart from the combat 'The Last of Us II' offers some basic puzzles, hundreds of collectibles and some exploration to bridge between the action. This part of the gameplay is not the focus but does not become boring or slow down the pacing of the story.
    Gameplay = 9/10
