This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great story with deep characters and moral conflicts.

The first half I was definitely on Joel's and Elly's side, but this all changes after discovering the past of Abby and her family and friends. "There are two sides of a coin" never felt so apt.

The only thing I don't enjoy was, that the game often felt long, it took too much time for the essential story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have seen a lot of reviews for this game, that either praise it as a 10/10 game or outright slate it, accusing it or betraying peoples trust, or saying it is badly written. Neither of these cases ring true to me.
First off (here is the spoiler bit) If you did not see Joel's death coming a mile off, then you haven't been paying attention to storytelling. Joel possibly doomed humanity at the end of the last game. Now while he did this for Ellie, he would have to pay the ultimate price for this action, that may well see humanity go extinct. While it is a bitter pill to swallow, as Joel was an excellent character, i do believe it does not hamper the game. Ellie is a character that we get to see come in to her own, as she sets off after the Wolves. Her progression, her anger and her determination are all palpable, and believable. Abby also gets some decent treatment in that department. She goes from being someone you hate for what she has done, to someone you can understand, she even has her redemption ark, something that is also a traditional story trope. While i can understand why some people are unhappy with the story, you can not say that it is poorly written, while still claiming to be a fan of the original, as the methodology and quality of both games are very similar. The inclusion of a trans character is something that i think has people screaming about "woke" culture, which is quite literally a ridiculous reason to be bitter.
The ending has also caused some issues for people, again i can understand some disappointment for some players, but i think they made the right call. Ellie is after all, supposed to be the hero, and must find a way back from that precipice, otherwise they run the risk of turning her into another Rick Grimes.
My biggest issue with the story telling would be that i felt there were too many flashback chapters, or that they went on too long. While i think the development of each character was important, those chapters felt longer than i wanted them too, and i would find myself thinking "oh not another flashback" but other than that i don't feel a need to complain

Now for the game play aspect. Some of the niggles from the original have been rectified, others still haven't. Gone is the need to craft lots of shivs (mostly) which annoyed me in the last game. However, movement still feels awkward at times. I missed the traversal puzzles that were present more in the first game, and while they have a few bits like that here, i feel there were not enough. While i am not offended by boss battles, there is definitely a rather annoying one later in the game, where the enemy is more the environment, rather than the giant infected that lurches towards you. There are occasions where i feel like my character was in cover, but was easily spotted, despite the same level of cover being sufficient five minutes ago. My next gripe is one of an aesthetic quality, film grain annoys me in games, even more so when the photo mode allows me to take shots without it. i really wanted an option to turn that film grain off for the whole game, which is otherwise remarkable for a PS4 Pro. its visually one of the best games of a generation and will be showcased for years as a good example of what the PS4 was capable of.

All in all, This is a high quality game, that makes some unpopular choices. but overall, it is a quality title, worthy of praise and not derision. It isn't perfect, but it is excellent.

It’s a minor fault but for me it slowed the game down just when it was gaining speed. A couple of inexplicable decisions by characters marred the story but not enough to derail it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For these past few weeks, I've been giving up sleeping hours to use whatever "free time" I have during the night to indulge myself and experience what I believe is a landmark in interactive storytelling - the Last of Us: Part 2.

Many people think modern video games are just glorified Pacman, electronic reflex spazzers with no essence or soul - far removed from literature, cinema or TV series. This cannot be further from the truth, and this game is a shining example of this fact. The Last of Us: Part 2 is one of the best story-driven epics any modern medium has to offer, and ranks among the the most memorable of any series, movies and literature that I have experienced in the past decade.

Set in a post-apocalyptic United States suffering through a cataclysmic plague, the Last of Us: Part 1 was the story of two survivors - Joel, a man tasked with escorting a young girl, Ellie, across the United States - and the incredible hardships they face on their journey to a safe haven where a light at the end of tunnel might possibly be found, brought upon them by the effect of a deadly infection that has decimated the world. Infected humans litter the streets, having succumbed to a fungus that turns them into rabid monsters, while all civilization has broken down. While this is the backdrop, the Last of Us: Part 1 was a story of loss, a story of fatherhood, a story of acceptance and of hard choices, and ultimately - of hope.

The Last of Us: Part 2 continues the story of these characters in this terrible world, but focuses on a different theme. As the game begins and the characters you love so much go through something unfathomable, you can't help but feel the blood running cold in your veins, as if your soul has left your body, as you just lust for a violent revenge and terrible retribution, but as Nietschze's famous quote goes:
"He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee."

The game's story is interestingly inspired by the head writer's experiences growing up in Israel. He recalls watching footage of the 2000 Ramallah lynching, where a Palestinian crowd killed and mutilated the bodies of two Israel Defense Forces reservists, and how, after hearing the cheering crowds, his mind turned to violent thoughts about bringing the perpetrators to justice. I am certain many Israelis have had the same thoughts. However, later comes the realization of the reality of the wishes we hope for and the choices we make, and the vicious cycle that is revenge.

Keeping this in mind, the game dares and uses rhetorical devices and literary tools that would be complex for any author or director to utilize. As the narrative progresses, it causes you to question who you are and what you believe. The script is flipped on you, and you go through an emotional journey that is difficult but enlightening, in the end. This game is a bold and monumental undertaking, and is filled to the brim with a passion for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in storytelling. In my opinion, only interactive media can even attempt to create an experience quite like this.

In the end, the Last of Us: Part 2 is a harrowing, meaningful, challenging and tragically exquisite story, and is a testament to the efficacy of video games as artistic expression.

however, there are some things that do bug me, like when you change character and you start playing as abby, you go on missions who are not really central to the plot. like you barely see the carnage that ellie is leaving behind her, and that was a real bummer. and the fact that this game has 2 endings, like, it ends, and then it ends again, the second one was a little forced, a little weird, but it is still damn good, give it a try, ****

There were moments I remember clearly where I was struggling to stay alive in the game, and yelling on my couch because it got so intense. It's the same feeling from Resident Evil 4 where fear comes from scary enemies and overwhelming odds. Survival, especially in the stealth sections, require a lot of creativity. It's very rewarding when games require you to think and make it clear that there are a lot of options. I played on moderate, and found it pretty difficult. There was incentive to avoid being seen and remain in stealth, because enemies easily overwhelmed you and drained your supplies otherwise. I never got bored even with this long campaign, which is impressive.

Alright, the story. It bugged me, but I think that was the point. Part 2 continued Part 1's theme of characters doing what the characters would do. In other words, the events are realistic when you consider the game world and the character's experiences. The writers did not try to make a story that would make fans happy. While it's admirable, it causes inevitable discomfort. That's why I can't give this game a 10. But I don't think the story ruined the game.

A few other notes. The start of the quest is a little slow. This game is very large and provides a lot of opportunity for searching for additional lot and even upgrades. Sometimes it rewards, sometimes it punishes. Again, that's realistic. It also can be really boring at times however.
Graphics are beautiful and motion capture and faces are crazy realistic.

The graphics are second to none and wouldn't look out of place on the PS5, so I applause the art designers for that one. Gustavo Santaolalla has given us another masterpiece with the beautifully elegant soundtrack for the game. The gameplay was amazing, the animations were so realistic and the stealth mechanics are some of the best I've experienced.

If I could change a few things they would be:
    - Play the game earlier in the timeline, making the game maybe 10 hours longer. This would allow us to experience the amazing flashbacks as actual parts linearly. This would add to the emotional trip Ellie experiences throughout her story. (Also giving us more Joel aha)
    - Let us play the whole of Ellie's story and post finishing the game, say now you can play Abby's story and see what she was doing the whole time. I get this ultimately defeats their aim with Abby, however, I believe playing as Abby disrupts the flow of Ellie's revenge-fueled emotional voyage.

And for that, I leave the review with a solid 9/10

First things first; is it as good as the first game? Absolutely not. Even the people praising this game will admit that, in terms of the story it has to tell, it doesn't quite live up to that of the original TLOU. It was, however, most likely the best sequel that we could hope for. Everybody will agree that this game excels in most regards. The graphics are breathtaking and arguably the best on the market right now, the music is masterful, the gameplay offers everything that the first game did and then some, and the actors involved put on an outstanding performance and really brought the characters to life. Nobody gripes about those (and nobody gives the game credit for them, either, unfortunately.) The real problem most people have is with the story.

I would first like to clarify that it is not, by any means, a bad story. I will accept the argument that it is painfully underwhelming, because it doesn't compare to the first game's story, but it's not BAD per se. I went into this game with low expectations after hearing what everyone online was claiming, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up thoroughly enjoying the game. It's a bit slow to start, but the gameplay immediately roped me in. Even if you're the type of person who is disappointed by the plot and thinks that it's painfully mediocre or even bad, I would still say that the game is worth playing solely for the other things it has to offer (music, gameplay, visuals, etc). The story is definitely very different from The Last of Us 1, but during my play through, I was still engaged for all of it. Demanding that the quality of the sequel's story is on par with or exceeds that of the original game is asking too much, but the story this game presents is more than serviceable. The dual-narrative experience brings more to the table than your traditional, run-of-the-mill revenge story. and it forces you to empathize with characters who you would ordinarily vilify and allows you to see the events of the game through a completely different perspective. Across both narratives, the pieces of the plot gradually fall into place over the course of this slow-burning game, and in typical TLOU fashion, everything finally clicks together in a gritty conclusion that actually feels faithful to the cruel and unforgiving world that the game has constructed.

At the end of the day, the game still seems to be a hit-or-miss. It still feels like The Last of Us, but some are disappointed with the plot. I would say that it's most likely due to how different it is from the first. All I can give is my personal experience, which was much more positive than many of my friends' experiences who also played through the game. If you enjoyed the gameplay of the first game, you will certainly enjoy the gameplay of TLOU2. The music fits the environment eerily well, and if nothing else, is at least worth a listen to on YouTube. The visuals are still stunning. If you end up enjoying the story like I did, you'll have a wonderful time with the game. If the story disappoints you, you'll most likely have an underwhelming and mediocre experience. I can only speculate, but I'd reckon that the reason people are so upset by this game is because it is not quite on the same level as they've come to expect by something with "The Last of Us" in the title. The story is more complex, and the characters aren't as fleshed out as they were in the first. The game takes some bold liberties with the plot, and if you're not eager to open your mind up to a little bit to change in how the series conveys its message differently than it did in the first, then this game may not be for you. The main thing dragging it down in most people's minds is likely the fact that it's a game related to TLOU. If this were a standalone game and its own IP, people would likely be much more fond of it, but some are not fans of the changes that were made.

I would like to reiterate that I personally enjoyed the game very much, and don’t think it was detrimental to the franchise. I'm giving it a 9/10. It was definitely a game worth playing, but how well it lands is largely dependent on the player and how open they are to the risky developments that Naughty Dog has taken with the franchise. Either way, I would recommend playing it. It's not The Last of Us 1 by any means, but it's still a good game that I will likely play again at some point in time.

The story... It's rare for a game to make you feel something... But just like the first game, this story makes you feel a lot of things, and due to the alternate perspective element of this story you end up feeling even more. I will be playing this game again soon.

(Why only 9/10?) I feel that the story could have given me more in terms of answers. Anyone who has played the first game will know about Ellie's arm, this was mentioned/referenced maybe 3 times throughout. This story is not about a cure at all, this story is about living in this new world and deciding what you want to fight for and when you decide to fight for it or let it go. But this story never really climaxed, rather it just kept building up to not much and then hanging back a bit before building up again and then taking its foot off the gas. Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of emotional scenes, but despite the fact it is made like a fantastic film, this is still a game and we do need a story which gives us satisfaction through that gameplay (I.e pulling the trigger that finally kills the protagonist, or making the final decision to do the thing you were trying to do the whole game, or even choosing to walk away). Most of the important moments were just a cutscene, then we went back to the same (fantastic) gameplay.

I would not want anything from the story to be removed, rather I'd want some of that story to be gameplay rather than a cut scene and some additional character development/backstory added for the unanswered questions.

The direction this game was taken in story wise was a big risk but and not what a lot of people were expecting but I wouldn't say it was badly written overall. The gameplay, graphics and sound are a big improvement from the first game which is to be expected but it really is one of the best looking and sounding games out there regardless of opinion on the games plot. The sense of brutality and emotion in the last of us 2 never really drops off from stealth kill to gun fight to cutscence it will have you questioning you're morals and emotions from beginning to end. All in all a solid game with a narrative that is very rarely seen from a video game or movie so I rate it highly for pushing the boundaries of narrative driven singleplayer games, graphics and audio.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow! I’ve played through this game 2 times and still love the emotional roller coaster this takes you through. This game is the most emotional invested game I’ve ever played. The way Joel died made me want to **** beat the **** out of Abby. The game wanted me to feel that way, you have to think about how the game is trying to make you feel and understand the feel and keep on playing. That’s why the user score is so bad because of Joel’s death. This is one of if my top games of all time. If you don’t like the game, just play through it again and understand the emotional investment it puts you through. Understand the hate it will give you towards Abby. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
