The plot is a **** rollercoaster of emotions and it’s objectively 5x better compared to the TLOU1, I can say the same thing about the characters. I love Abby and Ellie both! If I had a choice between Abby and Ellie I would struggle for 999999 years and **** die and I would be happy about that because I don’t wanna choose one of them Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From false advertisement to poor storytelling, TLoU2 really drops the ball. Most games don't get far by lying in interviews, manipulating advertising to swap characters, adding fake dialogue, and purposely creating new models just to sell a false story that is completely different from the end product because they know the product is poor and is not what the fan base wants. TLoU2 is no exception.

Couple that with the theme of "revenge is bad" seemingly impacting Ellie and Joel exponentially more than the characters who actually started the cycle of revenge (thus negating the entire "point" of the story and turning it into nothing but a torture... fetish) and potential threats of blackballing for poor critic reviews and you have the makings of a critic darling but a user flop.

The poor storytelling and lack of narrative cohesiveness would have placed this low to begin with, but the false advertisement and subsequent fake shock by Naughty Dog forces me to give it the lowest score possible.

The plot is deep and is a journey into the player ability to experience empathy, pain, grief, anger, love. Unfortunately not everyone fells good whenever a medium tries (and manages) to challenge their most deep feelings, as you can see from the number of negative review (5.7 is ridiculous). An interestingly high number of this negative reviews are partisan stances against the "politically correct storyline", I imagine because it features strong women with normal-sized breasts and diverse sexual orientations. You know, like in the real world.
Circling back to the game, everything is outstanding: the graphics, the sound design, the level design. The acting is amazing and really drives the story (both motion capture acting scenes and the voice over). The music is great as in Part I.
But the overall attention to details is in my opinion what keep everything together, what makes this game a work of art.

The downside is that I'm sure it will be difficult to find another game to enjoy as much as I enjoyed The Last of Us Part II. I believe it ruined videogames for me, in some wonderful way. But I'm also sure that this game will push the boundary even further, and I can't wait for that.

In the meantime, give yourself a favour: play The Last of Us and then The Last of Us Part II. If during the game your feeling will hurt it means that it's working, and that you do have feelings: it's good to exercise them, it helps you to grow into a more complete version of yourself.

Had to kill a dog. The characters that should die, don't. The characters you love, die. The whole story felt like fanfiction from a teenager that didn't like the ending to The Last of Us part 1 and I had no agency in the development or choices of my character.

Also, the fact that there were issues being able to see the scenery past the herculean biceps of a wanna-be gangbanger was more

Also, the fact that there were issues being able to see the scenery past the herculean biceps of a wanna-be gangbanger was more than frustrating when sneaking around as an alternative character.

TL;DR. I had to kill a dog and there was no vindication or reason for it in the end. Bad game is bad.

I heard that the fans of the series scolded the game a lot, they say it did not live up to their expectations. But I didn’t pin any hopes on the game, as a result of which I was not just undecided, but amazed. This is the most technically advanced game I've played so far.

Drawn out, creatively lazy and a huge middlefinger to the fans. Game is pretty but full of plotholes and contradictions. Easily the worst sequel to a great game. No real story/character development to speak of. Don't let the bought reviews fool you. Nobody liked this and and its naughty dogs only misstep. Avoid at all costs!

There are some great story moments to be had, but they are few and far between. Characters perform actions that totally contradict their established characterization in order to sevice the plot. There are many hours of totally irrelevant storyline crammed in between the climax and the ending. And the worst sin of of all, the game shoehorns you into playing as the antagonist for 10-15 hours, in a failed effort to build sympathy for that character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Positives:
    - Improved though not wildly altered game mechanics. The fighting is more exciting and there's a few new things you can do, ie crawl, but it has the same basics.
    - Enemy NPCS move and converse realistically.
    - Great graphics.
    - Amazing voice acting.
    - Good soundtrack. Gustavo Santaolalla doesn't disappoint even if all else does.

    Negatives:
    - The game is contradictory, and it goes against everything that the first part established. Joel and Ellie have faced far worse than getting jumped by a group of no more than 6 strangers. Joel single-handedly took out a whole hospital-worth of armed soldiers before. You cannot convince me that this is what it'd take to kill him.
    - Ellie and Joel seem horribly out of character. Once again, after everything that they went through, it seems hard to believe that Joel would be so easily trusting of strangers and let himself get killed without a fight, and that Ellie would be impulsive enough to barge into a room and get immediately apprehended.
    - It's hard to feel sympathetic for Abby for 2 main reasons. For starters, her dad wasn't a good man. He wanted to kill a 14 year old girl - one of the protagonists, mind you, who the audience is supposed to care about and root for - in hopes of developing a vaccine without so much as consulting her first. Marlene points out the fact that he's selfish and wouldn't be so quick to agree to this if he had to kill Abby instead, and she's right. He also gets very little screen time and no development, and so the player doesn't care about him dying. If anything, we're glad that Joel killed him and saved Ellie.
    - Abby is completely unbearable at the beginning of the game. Perhaps she would be more understandable if she killed Joel in a less gruesome way, but she doesn't. Abby knows better than anybody else what it's like to lose your dad. And so for her to beat Joel to death right in front of his daughter and subject her to the same, if not worse because at least Abby didn't have to watch her dad die like Ellie did, trauma seems ridiculous and senseless to me. Playable characters aren't supposed to be perfect, but they are at the very least supposed to be likable in one way or another despite their flaws. We are supposed to feel for Abby and come to understand her, but this is difficult to do because she's so shallow.
    - Death is constantly used for shock value. In a poor attempt to subvert expectations and catch the player off guard, NaughtyDog horribly overuses this trope. The game is a lot more gruesome than the first one, which shouldn't necessarily be bad, but here it's just unnecessary. What made the first game successful is the even divide between heart-warming and heart-wrenching scenes. But with so much hurt and pain constantly taking place, it just gets boring and repetitive. The angst loses it's significance because the player gets so used to seeing it. We half expect something to go wrong every time there's an animated sequence because we've seen it countless times already. Personally, I felt nothing when Jesse and Yara died because I saw it coming from a mile away. I was honestly more surprised to see that Lev survived.
    - The representation for POC and LGBT people is very poor. NaughtyDog does not understand that implementing these characters only to villainise, torture, or kill them (sometimes all 3, and oftentimes purely for the sake of advancing another white character's story arc) does not make them "woke". Yes it's the apocalypse, yes people die - but why do literally none of the black characters survive? The first game is also guilty of this, but here it's especially bad. Why does only 1 out of the 3 Asian leads live? And to have Ellie and Isaac, a lesbian and a black man respectively, be so violent only plays into the stereotype that all lesbians and all black people are aggressive.
    - The trailers painted a completely different story for the game by purposely changing the character models and tinkering with the scenes. I know that trailers are supposed to avoid spoilers, but this was just straight up bait.
    - The ending was unfulfilling. Good stories often leave the audience with a big question in order to A) let them interpret what happens next themselves or B) leave room for the developers to make another game or a DLC in the future. The first game did this perfectly by having Joel lie to Ellie about what really happened with the Fireflies, but too many things are left unexplained here. Where did Dina and JJ go? What about Tommy? What did Ellie do next? Did Abby and Lev ever find the Fireflies? Who were the guys that kidnapped them? It's infuriating.

I'd have more to say if it weren't for the word limit. I gave part 2 the benefit of the doubt because I loved the first game despite it's flaws. But after an exhausting 30+ hours, I can only say that I'm left disappointed. After 7 years, NaughtyDog's delivered us a game that is contradictory, repetitive, bland, and down-right insulting

I loved the first episode and was looking forward to the new life story of my favorite characters. Instead I got scripted garbage full of pointless killing, LGBT agenda and worst of all, the main characters are dead or complete sociopaths. This game is gaming and cultural garbage. Well done.

A masterpiece, but nap can deny that it is a feminist game. The most striking characters are women and there are hardly any male characters in the game. It's not really a weak point. I almost dropped the game on the part of playing with abby but I believe this discomfort was thought of as part of the work.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
