The one thing I could have done without is the companions. At best the help out on the rare occasion but mostly they just sit around and waste the good cover spots. Once they even pushed me out of cover in front of a very angry looking fella.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After taking a couple of weeks to think it over I would happily say that The Last Of Us Part 2 is an excellent game.
It's a technical masterpiece with very good gameplay and a polarising story.
I think that the themes and atmosphere of this are very much aligned with and build off the original. It's not for everyone for sure. The Abby section dragged on just a couple of hours too long for me. Especially since we left it on such a cliffhanger before that...
It questions your loyalties and offers differing perspectives. Each character is flawed. Some more than others. But ultimately the game left me feeling dirty, conflicted, emotionally wrecked, with a touch of acceptance to wrap it up. Not quite as stellar as the first, but damn near close.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The hatred of this game simply astounds me. Story aside, on the technical achievement this game is a 10/10. Looks and sounds fantastic, has a massive range of accessibility options too that you don't see in most games. The acting too is great. Great performance from the cast and solid directing.

Now the story, I played the first game 5 times (twice on Grounded mode) so I'm in a position to comment on it as someone who loves the story from the first. Spoilers ahead.

So Joel dies at the hands of a girl whose father he murdered at the end of the first game. His actions regarding Ellie at the end of the first game WERE extremely selfish, but understandable. Aside from that, we learned that he did some bad things in his past between the outbreak and meeting Ellie. He is the anti hero in a series about Ellie. This series was always about Ellie and here she takes the lead role. Does Joel die to early? Arguably. But the controversy surrounding his death is pathetic.

I like the way the game is split between Ellie and Abby. Playing as Abby opens up a whole new perspective in this world. She's part of a group that can be lethal when required, but also human in comfortable moments. The same as Joel and Ellie's new found group in Jackson.

Overall it's a great game. The faux outrage over it is downright pathetic. People need to grow up. Buy the game, try your best to ignore the hive mind of social media and make up your own mind. If you don't like the story that's ok, but the game itself is still great to play as the game play is fantastic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to kill Abby, and I did everything I could to kill Abby. But sometimes you learn about perspective. And you say “I am not Joel or Ellie or Abby. I am me. The reason why I love this game is because it doesn’t do what i want but does things I live with.” I didn’t want to kill Jerry. He’s just a doctor trying to save the world. I would have shot in in the leg or incapacitated him in a different way. But Joel didn’t want to do that. Joel wanted to make sure that this Firefly project would never be possible again. And he did that, betting his last bit of luck that when he burst through those doors, Ellie would still be alive — and she was. It’s hard to admit, but Joel won. Expand

    - I played the last of us 2 to play as Ellie, the Ellie portion of the game is fantastic and just when you are getting into it, you are then made to play as Abby.

    - I do not understand why Naughty Dog thought it would be a good idea to make you play half of the game as a character you severely dislike from the start.

A multiplayer portion of the game would have made the game more valuable and increased replay value.

The gameplay takes what worked in TLOU and expands it, and it’s animation system is by far the most smooth I’ve seen in a game. Whilst the game is not perfect, and not as straight forward as the first game (which some may not like), it gives you everything you could want from a sequel, and more. When Naughty Dog said they expected the game to be divisive, they weren’t wrong. Though don’t be put off by out of context spoilers, because context does matter, and when it’s all added up, it equals a well thought out, gut wrenchingly dark story, that many will find themselves enjoying. I can’t say you will agree with all the plot points of the game, but just go into it with an open mind, and see how you feel. Expand

This is a great game. But I can somewhat see the problem people have with it, aside from the childish trolling reviews.

    The mental transition from:

    A) hating a major character (and not wanting to be manipulated by the game)

    to

    B) accepting that you understand (not like) the character's motivation while seeing that (all) the characters – being blinded by hatred – just can’t act otherwise. And therefore the game doesn't give you the option to change their actions.

... that’s a highly risky way to tell a story. Especially with such beloved characters. But it's also a real sign of creative integrity and of a bold vision.

If the player can’t take this step of acceptance (a major theme of the game itself), the game fails. It will take you out of the immersion–which is so important to appreciate the game. That's why the story leak was a huge problem. The game needs context and the player needs to let the plot – and his own anger – sink in. It's a brilliant mechanism that mirrors the events of the game on a meta-level.

The game knows that the player is in a moral dilemma. And – if you let the masterful crafted world and characters sink in – it takes you on a cathartic trip (which doesn’t work if you are not willing to accept the story).

I applaud Naughty Dog for the brave decision to go with this. I loved how they got me to the point, where I went with the emotions of the characters EVEN knowing that this meant acting against my personal choices (that derived from my knowledge of the story as an external viewer). And that I, therefore, routed for the catharsis of all the protagonists.

Risky but (therefore) great storytelling, if you are willing to accept what the game is doing.

    - While hidden, AI is very predictable with their movements. All stealth games have this issue though.
    - Can't switch which side of the shoulder your camera is on, only while aiming you can.
    - The story is really slow in the bulk of the game and a bit lackluster.
    - Too much of the story felt like you was doing detours, like getting fuel or medical supplies.
    - I felt a lot of my time was looking for loot and it's like I needed to do it even though it got old.
    - The story going forwards and backwards in time too often hurts the pacing of the story.
= The story isn't as good as the first game and even though the graphics are better, the image looks horrible with the film grain. You can turn the grain off while in photo mode and it's sad because the game looks so much better with it off, It's such a shame. It's still a very good game, but it's not been able to grip me like the first one did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The atmosphere, graphics and audio are simply fantastic. You probably won't get much more out of the PS4 (Pro).

The fact that the ending isn't a happy ending and triggers so many strong emotional reactions from players shows how brilliant the game is. The developers deliberately play with the emotions of the players and get them out of their comfort zone. This also explains the many negative reviews of the players, who can't handle that. And I expect my review to be downvoted by the same people, but that’s okay.

It is certainly not a game for everyone, especially not for those who can only live with a good ending. But for those who can handle this kind of story, this game is unique except for some minor flaws and it is certainly one of the best of its kind.

I give some smaller point deductions for the skill system and the shooter mechanics.

The biggest surprise here is the gameplay, particularly the tense, frantic combat encounters. Play on high difficulty and don’t use listen mode — that’s how the game should be experienced. The stealth is the absolute best in any Naughty Dog game and perhaps my favorite in a big budget stealth game since MGSV. The open-ended design of the levels is both dense and expansive, naturally facilitating multiple play styles and keeping all of them engaging. Outside of the main narrative, of which there has been plenty of criticism (some deserved, some not), the actual world building and environmental storytelling are both top notch here. The LGBT characters generally steer clear of pandering and don’t virtue signal like, say, Steve in Mass Effect 3; regardless of what anyone says, the fact that one of the most frequently cited problems with the game is the inclusion of LGBT characters is, frankly, ridiculous, immature, and neckbeard to the extreme. What a silly thing to dismiss a game for, honestly. Expand

From the opening first 20min the game had me and when I beat the game I was in love with the characters, the story, and the world. 7 years later and I still love it and I was so excited about Part II.

Just like the first game, I downloaded Part II and was waiting for the game to unlock on my PS4. The game unlocked and I was finally playing the sequel to my favorite game of all time. I was so hyped and was so happy to be back in this world with these characters. The game looks so great and is probably one of the best looking games of all time (next to RDR2). As the story progressed I was happy to see where it would go and then it happened. The unforgettable act took place and I had no idea where the story was going. Based on the trailers I thought I knew where the story was going but I was wrong.

I accepted what happened and was dying to see what happened next. I played the story over the course about a week and was caught off guard so many times by the story, especially with a huge surprise half way through the game. I found myself rushing through the second half and stopped myself when I noticed. Upon completing the game I was unsure what I thought about the game. I LOVED so much about the game. The gameplay and combat is Naught Dog at its best! The animations is top tier and the acting is the best I've seen in a video game.

I thought about this game for days and finally realized that I actually really appreciate what NG did with the story. They could have done it safe and predictable but they didn't. The arc that Ellie and other characters go through is great. 90% of this game is about revenge, yes. However, the last 10% is a about redemption and forgiveness. While this game may not be what some fans expected, I feel this game will be remembered as revolutionary and ahead of its time a year or two down the road. I can't wait for my NG+ playthrough to see everything I missed during my first playthough.

    My final score: 8.5

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
