TL;DR Oh Bruce and Amy, where art thou? 14 yr old Ellie in the 1st game is a deeper and more mature character than the 19 yr old Ellie in this game.

The story needed to be a strong part of the game's appeal, like in the first, so that's what I'll concentrate on and choose a score for.

The rest of it? Fantastic production values and technical merit. Not so good are the gameplay that is quite dated and only slightly improved from the first. Skill trees are linear and seem like an after thought. You can see the graphics and hear the sound etc for yourself so you'll know what to expect in those regards.

So, the story. It fails. Druckmann is in love with his vision to the detriment of the story. He seemingly thinks, 'Look how unrelentingly violent and dark my game is, therefore it's mature and deep', but it just doesn't work.

Almost all the characters are shallow and one-dimensional with naught to express but hate and spitefulness, always prepared to cruelly lash-out even when there's no apparent cause or reason, even when it would be in their interest to not do so. It feels like they are artificially hellbent on destruction just to accommodate Druckmann's obsession. It's totally implausible that you'd have such a long-line of malicious individuals all interacting with each others lives like this. It's all so contrived, as is the way the main character's lives keep weaving together.

I kept watching their behaviour thinking, 'You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes'. I couldn't feel sorry for them, I couldn't feel anything terrible was happening - they pretty much all just reap what they sow and they only have themselves to blame in a way that, instead of making me engrossed, just made me view it impassively, like a far-removed bystander. They were too shallow to care about or believe.

If you saw a bunch of bandits and criminals constantly getting into petty disputes and killing each other, would you really care?

We've seen stories like this so many times and done by better writers. Many of the key scenes seem to have been simply plucked from various movies, games and shows (like a pick'n'mix) then simply shoved in without any skill. Sin City torture, Game of Thrones sex scene, Witcher 3 snowball fight, Walking Dead 'everyone's behaving like animals', basic TV show soap opera 'selfishness leading to neglected duties that lead to tragedy', etc, etc. All this stuff having been done before isn't the problem though, it's the paint-by-numbers delivery that's the problem.

Not to mention the countless times the game talks down to the player (do they realise people 35+ might have been interested in this game?) by using the rote 'revenge breeds revenge' motif.

The ending in particular is incredibly cliched and plays out in a completely unconvincing way; it's just bizarre and completely without motive. Is it just there to say, 'Haha! Not what you expected, eh?' Except I did expect it for reasons that are spoilery so I won't go into it. Honestly, it was so cliched that all that was missing was Ellie looking into a mirror to see her hatefilled face - before smashing it in rejection.

Tarantino once said, 'Don't jerk off your audience for 2 hours and then have no money shot'. This game does it for 30 and leaves you unfulfilled.

The original's themes of love and family were much less used in gaming and the motivations of the characters much more relatable, imho. A wasted opportunity and a game that I suspect will not be remembered particularly well once the dust has settled and the consensus declares all those ridiculous 10/10's to be nonsense. This will be a Mass Effect 3 type thing but with people's grievances being aimed at most of the story, rather than just the ending.

I hope ND make sure there's more than one 'top dog' for their next game.

To finish with, here's some bullets point musings.

-Joel in the 1st game: 'Never trust strangers, never take unnecessary risks'.

-Joel Part 2, 'Howdy pardners, my name's Joel, would you like to see our village?'.

-Ellie Part 1: 'Gee, kids before the apocalypse had it so easy. I'd never take the gifts they had for granted. All I want is a family'.

-Ellie Part 2: 'God, this village with food, water and security, full of friends, a woman I love and a strong community sucks ass! It's sooooo lame! My life has no meaning!'.

Druckmann: 'Using all-new characters in the sequel would have been cowardly, Ellie and Joel's story needs to continue'. *proceeds to make a game only about Ellie and a stranger while also introducing a bunch of new characters*

Druckmann: 'I want to make people feel things', creates a story using one of the most used themes of all time and adds nothing new. Gives the player no choice/consequence, thereby leaving them detached onlookers.

Awesome graphics, gameplay and phisics. The I.A is really enjoyable and it is a pleasure to play but definitely there is something bad in the plot that doesn't justify what happens. They just abandoned what TLOU 1 did.

Apart from the monster session on launch - I completed the game in 2-4 hour sessions and took me a week.

It’s hard to put into words how this game made me feel once the credits rolled - Without spoiling anything all I can say is it will drain you. A constant emotional rollercoaster that some people will not enjoy - but for me it was something that I’ve never felt after playing a game.

Gameplay is nothing but a pure masterpiece for me - it’s improvements to a game so beloved that I didn’t think they could get much better than Part 1.

Story wise it was a decent - Not something I’m completely happy with, but I’m glad developers don’t make games just for fan service.

I look forward to playing this again in the future - but for now I would recommend this to many, with a warning that you may not like how you feel after each session. This is something that I appreciated from the game - I play games to get lost in a world and escape normal life, but I’ve never played a game and come out with so many thoughts still lingering in my head.

I also need to commend Naughty Dog for making this game significantly longer than most of their titles. So in conclusion, if you like post apocalyptic themes, dark, visceral stories and linear games, you're going to absolutely love this one. And if you're like me, someone who doesn't really care that much about such things, you're still going to enjoy it a great amount, because this is simply a great game with an enormous budget and a lot of talent behind it.

I'd like to post a longer review going into more detail, but metacritic's stupid character restriction prevents me from doing that. If you want to see my full thoughts on this game, please look up my reddit user 'Vapidbobcat' and search among my posts.

Simply a great game! Fantastic cinematics! And extremely well realized environments and spaces. Great sequel to the truly compelling story of the first game. A couple minor complaints about a boss fight or two and some characters actions vs their motives Outside of that this is just a well made game. Would like to see some multiplayer added.

Ellie's story is well done, even though there is some pacing issues for sure. I loved the flashback scenes between Ellie and Joel as well and I wish we got more of those. The thing that almost ruins this game for me is Abby, who we are forced to play as for nearly half of the game. The only redeeming part of playing her was the storyline with Lev and his sister. I didn't care about her WLF friends at all though besides the dog, and I still do not empathize with Abby killing Joel. The fact that Joel dies at the very beginning is a terrible way to go in my opinion but it made me love the few moments we had with him in this game even more. I don't think Ellie should have let Abby live either. It would still have the same message at the end with Ellie coming back to the farm and no one is there. Overall, this game isn't as bad as it is made out to be but it is a letdown storywise to huge fans of the first game like me. Asides from the story disappointing me in some aspects, the gameplay is great and the music, graphics, and voice acting are fantastic and almost justified the price for me. Expand

So you don't take too much attention to them and don't care about them, because you want to know what happens after the cliffhanger that happens just before this long flashback. I mean, this part isn't bad but it may have been better if way shorter or shown most of it in another place of the game, altering the current order of the game. And something that isn't good or bad, but just a personal opinion: I don't understand why they took such an effort to make ugly all an unattractive the new female characters specially when compared to their actresses.
Other than, every other thing of the game is really awesome. Really awesome in terms of visuals, gameplay, animation, cinematics, IA, action, stealth, etc.

I do recommend playing the game on a higher difficulty, to really hammer home the survival horror aspects of the game. All in all, the game is just great, and people like different things, who would've thought. However almost every bad review I've seen and read for this game, boils down to "I don't like girls, lesbians and Ellie isn't a straight white male, so I can't relate to her". I hate to break it to you, but you're not really similar to Doomguy or Dante either. The game's story is beautifully crafted, and feeds off the momentum of the first game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us has joined the ranks of beloved franchises that were ruined by bad writing despite having almost everything going for them: amazing graphics, great sound design, fantastic actors and an astronomical amount of money.

Sadly, all of this is wasted on a cookie cutter revenge story that loves to make you feel as miserable as possible, confusing this with deep and impactful writing. Charactes returning from the first game might as well be new characters altogether because they are often entirely unrecognizable, while at other times their old selves are at least shining through somewhat. Almost everyone is a terrible person doing terrible things to each other for the sole purpose of revenge. Parts of the story genuinely feel like an overly long fan fiction; the game could (and should) have been 6-8 hours shorter than it is. Nothing of value would have been lost.

One thing I will recommend the writers for is that they at least tried to make the Abby plotline work, and that the inclusion of it in itself was a pretty ballsy move. Taking risks like this shouldn't be shot down in general and could have been really good. Forcing the player to play as the murderer of Joel and showing that she is just another person in and of itself is not a bad concept, whatever some people might say. Not nearly as deep as the game thinks it is, but it could have worked fine. All the problems lie in the length and pacing. Abby is not a particularly likable character even if you exclude her murder of Joel, she's just too bland and goody two shoes for this.

If she absolutely had to be included, it should have been a short segment after each "day" we play as Ellie and not half the game in a row. Naughty Dog's and Sony's marketing was genuinely, unironically deceptive in this regard and should (but won't) have consequences. But much fewer people would have batted an eye if we had played as Abby for an hour at a time as a sort of "break" between Ellie chapters.
"Cycles of violence" is a nice, but meaningless, buzzword. What exactly does this game teach us, as opposed to the first game's profound message of paternity and selfishness? Revenge is bad. Murder is bad. People are, in fact, not black and white. A five year old understands this. The Last of Us Part II is miserable and violent for the sake of it. Don't mistake this for brilliant and game changing writing, because it isn't. It's an embarrasment.

    4/10 (Bad)

However, I can't in good conscience give this game a 4 as a sum total because there is more to a video game than just the story. Almost every other aspect of this game was phenomenal and deserving of some praise. All this in mind, I'd give it a 6/10 (Fine).

All in all, The Last of Us Part II was a huge disappointment after such a long wait. It's very telling that this game will still win all the awards and was a huge critical hit despite its mediocrity, whereas the fandom is much more divided on the topic. In my opinion, this game suffered from both positive and negative review bombing on this site (a 10 is just as ridiculous as a 0), but deserves the middle ground rating that resulted from this.
