The game challenges us as players to cope with the death of a beloved character, it knows you hate Abby, killing Joel is not a slap in the face of the player, but it's there to put you in the shoes of Ellie, we want Abby dead even if we know that she did exactly what we wanted to do to her, the game shows to us that we are no better than the person we most hate, the protagonist is the antagonist and vise versa. Abby has the moral high ground but we care more about Joel . This game is the train moral test and we all lost. Expand

A complex and emotional story about how far you will go for revenge and the consequences that it brings upon you. 2 different perspectives illustrates the idea that there are no heroes or villains in the cold and hardened world of the Last of Us. An impressive roster of well written and complex characters help the plot explain a powerful story that will resonate with you for weeks after you finish. 10/10 Expand

The only downside to the game is that some levels and chapters are very drawn out and I feel some of the second half could have been a bit shorter. I tend to feel this way with most when I find myself ready for the ending.

I can not stress enough this game is amazing and should be enjoyed from end to end and it requires empathy and reflection.. the final scenes will be with me forever and the ultimate message... this will be a hallmark of what we have to look forward to in future of gaming.

It's an incredible piece of art and in my opinion the standard which story based games should aspire to. People really need to tap into their empathy and reflect on the game before trashing it.

It's not a perfect game, but it's as close to a perfect game as I've seen in years.

But however i loved the game even though its probably not really the best game ever made but i reviewed it 10/10 to even out the score. I loved the story even though Joel died, and the ending to me was not really disappointing. I felt like it was better that Ellie finely after all these hours understood.

The gameplay to me was like the first game but that really didn't mattered to me because i bought the game for the story. So to me this was a really good game and I will probably play it over again to aim for the platinum trophy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to tell you about my impressions of the last of us part II. Many did not like the death of Joel like me. I believe that Joel deserved to live at least until the middle of the game. Flashbacks Ellie is the best in the game, very touching and cute scenes. The end of the game is very I would like to kill Abby, and I didn’t seem to want to kill her because I did not empathize with Abby, but Leo because he would have lost the only loved one in his life. Neil Drakman left the ending open and I would like to see the dlc or the final part in this game.

P.S I would like more Jackson or joyful memories from Ally's life. The game left mixed feelings, but because of my sympathy for Ally and my love for the previous part, I will give a positive assessment. I still fell in love with this part, for the positive and negative emotions I had.

However, it becomes a true hymn only for the second part, a match that gives you goosebumps. The new game “hurts us”, it “lets us down”, and even makes some of us “go away in the end”. And even if we could give it a chance to “start again”, the story “would keep itself” in spite of everything. The latter, I believe, is what makes The Last of Us Part II iconic.

Playing this game is a challenge, a fight we are destined to lose. As if standing on a ring with Naughty Dog, we are knocked down by the very first blow. Those of us, who strive to continue, will get hurt again and not once. Of course, this isn’t something we are used to as players. After all, what we love most about video games is the feeling of pleasure they give us. In response, the gaming industry has always focused on players and their needs, by producing games of different genres and styles, in order to bestow us this feeling. The Last of Us Part II is the first game, in my experience, which is not created for the player. It is created for the characters.

Seven years have passed, since we learnt the story of Joel and Ellie. And as in any great story, once it ends, the characters have it all to move on without their writers’ intervention. The idea of Neil Druckmann and the Co. was to give them an opportunity to live their lives by themselves. A respectful decision, yet a cruel one – not for the characters, but the players. The new game destroys all our expectations with respect to the story right in the beginning, and it does so ruthlessly. Moreover, it makes us do things we find brute, pointless and even mocking. It is tempting, in a fit of rage and despair, to blame the developers’ team in making a failure of a story, but… is it really their story?

No matter how terrifying it may sound, I truly believe that the narrative of The Last of Us Part II is the only possible continuation of a story that took off in the first part. Despite all the love we have for Joel and Ellie, they are still ordinary humans, whose decisions must have consequences. We can criticise Neil Druckmann for the chosen order of events, but, sooner or later, they would have happened anyway. It is much more important that he doesn’t make up a story, but puts the characters in a genuine environment crafted by their deeds, which allows them to be authentic. The question then is why do we need to have a game, which is created for the characters rather than us? Well, whatever we think of it, the new story is a brilliantly presented work of art, which can teach us many things.

It is not merely a revenge recital, as some of us complain – it is also a story of how important it is to stop at the right time. It is a story of forgiveness and being unable to forgive; a story of how frightening the PTSD effects are, especially in a world where love and peace are so precious and rare; a story of growing up being already an adult… Such attention to the narrative is not caused by the lack of technical virtues, but their utmost excellence. It wouldn’t be a Naughty Dog game, if the directing, music and acting weren’t so magnificent, while the gameplay really amazes with its meticulous attention to details, and live action fights.

In the end, the new game allows to dive into unimaginable depths of The Last of Us world as it is: dark, scary, and immensely sad. The only way to accept this story is, perhaps, to let the pain in. If in the first part we are united with Joel and Ellie by hope, in the second part we share a common trauma – a bond of far greater power.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abby sucks. As a die hard Naughty Dog fan I am truly disappointed. I have been with them since the first Crash release and have bought every single game along with countless amounts of related merchandise because I’ve always loved their gameplay and their stories. From my childhood games of Crash Bandicoot (the whimsical animations, fun level designs, and addictive EVERYTHING), to the incredible Jak series (which Jak 2 was the first game I ever preordered), to the FAN-freaking-TASTIC Uncharted series, I honestly didn’t think it could get any better. Then The Last of Us came out. At first I was skeptical but it truly blew me away and set the standards for the quality of experience I expect from games I buy. Because of this die hard fandom, and love of Last of Us especially, I was PSYCHED for Last of Us part II.... but wow. How let down I’ve been. To see the legacy of such a beautifully crafted story tarnished by its sequel in attempts to cater/pander to the world of 2020 as well as all the trash characters to focus on/develop like Abby. Truly. I am disappointed. I only want to empathize and humanize the enemy in my games/story to a certain extent. That’s why as the bad guy is dying you humanize them in many stories so there’s both a “awww moment” as well as a “get the bad guy!!!” Moment. But to play half the game OVER humanizing the antagonist now makes me question the hero. Which then makes it hard to identify with Ellie because I’m confused and frustrated with Abby. Also, why does Abby have cannonballs for shoulders and moose thighs for arms? Truly, for a game I was so excited and backing, and avoiding all the spoilers that got leaked, I’m so disappointed. I signed the petition asking Naughty Dog To rewrite the story of the game... we shall see I suppose. This is what happens when too many “free spirits” get hired at Naughty Dog and you try to create a piece of art to sell rather than just be inherently good. Yes this is super subjective, but with a 4.6/10 versus it’s predecessor at a 9.1/10, I’d like to objectively point out I’m not the only who thinks it’s garbage. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You can tell from reading most of the negative reviews that they are driven by a certain agenda (most obviously didn't play the game and just read up facts from the Wikipedia entry). They try to make this not too obvious by constructing fake arguments for their negative downvotes ("This game has plot holes... the character design is terrible...") Quite telling by the comments that claim Abby to be the Transgender character of the game... Yeah. Surprise. She isn't.
By all means TLOU2 is not a perfect game (it has some slog in the middle and could have been streamlined). But what it is, is still an amazing achievement. Character design, the level of detail, the intelligence of the AI - that's all top notch and unprecedented until now (RDR2 comes close second). As for the story: What other way could there have been? What did people expect? The further adventures of Joel and Ellie? A retreat of the same story - just with better graphics? The first game was based around "the things you do for love". The second takes this sentiment and turns it around. It is "the things you do out of hate". And - at least for me - it worked. It turned Abby from Ellie's Nemesis and a brute killer into a person that you can actually root for (at least understand her motives).
Of course, if you want your stories not challenging and clean cut, this is probably not for you. TLOU2 follows more in the vain of "Game of Thrones". And people complaining were probably also wishing that the latter was Ned Stark vs. Ice Zombies.
