A beautifully crafted game that holds a torch for all other sequels to look upon. I have cried, been shocked, stared in awe and have loved every minute of this game. For those that hate the game, I am positive it is because of the LGBTQ+ elements that angers them. This game is a masterpiece. A true work of art.

The one sentence from Fallout that comes to mind after the credits roll for Last of us 2. It is a marvelous story with great gameplay. It tells the story in many viewpoints and you can accept it and enjoy the game(or not and give awful reviews in metacritic). In this post-apocalyptic world nothing is in black and white. All are bad based on the viewpoint. Everyone you kill is a person, and you might find them in both stories.

One of the best stories in ages. Deal with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m very disappointed in how the decided to off Joel with him being as smart & deadly as he was in TLOU. Weak. I feel like the story had many directions it could’ve went but it just wasn’t the main concern as you can tell with the lazy writing. It took 7 years just for naughty dog to mess up an extraordinary new IP. There was no point to Joel death because in the end there was no revenge...so after I finished the game I felt very empty. I didn’t understand the moral of the story if there was one. The amazing graphics and gameplay quality can’t save such a dry story concept. Oh & it was very gay. Expand

I admit that the game has the best performance among the ps4 pro games, but the plot of this story is such a rubbish that we cannot enjoy it.

The story feels really clunky, kind of like you are playing multiple games that got shoved together. They try to introduce a new main character but failed at making her as interesting or likeable as the characters from the original. This ruins the pacing as you spend the entire time with this character, just wishing you were playing as the other characters.

    There are redeeming qualities

There are redeeming qualities about the game, but it's hard to give it a high rating when I just enjoyed less than half of the game. If you enjoyed the first game, there is little change to the gameplay. The graphics are good. But it fails to capture the magic of the original.

The gameplay has not changed since 2013 however it’s still fun and the graphics are great but there’s pros don’t make up for having to play 15 hours as Abby who doesn’t have any character development towards realizing that she was wrong. Also not to mention the false advertising of ND portraying Joel to be in the main story only to have them switch it to Jesse at full release. The story is just a true dumpster fire and completely and entirely spits on the first game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it breaks my heart to see so many negative reviews for this game.

This is not an easy story to endure. It’s truly heartbreaking to see these characters that you’ve grown to know so well go through such pain. That being said, I would encourage anyone who thinks this story is only about revenge to give it another try with a different lens. The way I see it, when Ellie decides to not kill Abby, she’s not forgiving Abby so much as she’s forgiving Joel. The fire and pain that fuels her rampage to kill Abby is not exactly fueled by Joel’s death, but rather the pain and conflict that comes from Joel’s decision to pull her out of the hospital. Joel is a very flawed character, and he’s certainly not a hero. If Ellie had killed Abby, she would have been just as bad as Joel was. She loves Joel, but she knows his death was a consequence of his actions. She doesn’t think he deserved it, per se, but she’s just like Abby, trying to get revenge for her father’s death. If you can’t empathize with Abby, I can understand why you don’t like the game, but I would encourage you to try. I found all of the characters to be very well written and very much like real people.

That’s my essay. The gameplay is also very fun and the graphics are stunning.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game last week and I'm really disappointed with the story.

Everyone on team Ellie is great.

The problem is Abby. ND forces the player into Abby's perspective and tries to get the player to empathize with her. The problem is Abby is never confronted with her own atrocities. She starts off by brutally torture killing Joel. Given how popular Joel is with fans that's a lot of heat to introduce a new character with. To explain her actions ND reveals that Joel killed her father and Abby is consumed with revenge. Okay great, now why do I have to play this character for 10-12 hours as ND tries to humanize it and fails

As a member of the Fireflies she would have taken part in bombing Fedra checkpoints. Then she joins the WLF and stays long enough to gain Isaac's trust committing untold violent acts. She clearly has no problem killing other people's fathers. Game completely sanitizes her WLF history. Instead she plays with dogs and jokes around with her friends. The storytelling is absolutely contrived.

At one point she chooses to help some kids that become her allies to gain player sympathy. Contrived. For her big face turn she wastes her time by going on a mission to get a med kit for one of the kids. Then she chooses to leave the WLF by siding with these kids she has known for less than two days. Contrived. The choice between a "bad guy" group and kids is extremely cliche. She even kills WLF members she knows by name and presumably has known for years for these allies she has known for less than 2 days. Contrived. This all conveniently happens in the same 4 day period that Ellie is looking for Abby. Again Abby plays with dogs, helps random kids, goes on lifesaving med kit mission, and sides against her evil WLF group. But not once does the story mention the messed up stuff she would have been apart of just one week earlier as a high ranking WLF member. The whole thing is pointless contrived nonsense.

To top it off the last mission is ridiculous. Ellie travels hundreds of miles on a rumor of an Abby sighting because Ellie is still haunted by visions of Joel. Ellie fights hordes of goons for her chance to finish Abby only to let Abby go at the last moment. Ellie kills hundreds of goons in this game, why would she suddenly care about one more? The story's themes do not match the game play at all.

I do not recommend this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's been a few days since I finished this heart-wrenching, emotional assault of a game. I've noticed that the largest complaints of my fellow players focus on the story, which is, without doubt, one of the driving elements of the game. I would like to focus on that, so I'll get the other parts out of the way as quickly as possible.

The gameplay is a tremendous improvement over the original. More open-ended segments avoid the pitfalls of the traditional Naughty Dog 'hallway shooter,' the gunplay feels more responsive, the melee hits a great balance of easy to learn/hard to master, and the combat all-around feels as tense as it should in a survival game. The graphics are stunning, and post-infection Seattle feels like one of the most fully-realized post-apocalyptic worlds ever created. The in-game artifacts contribute to awesome worldbuilding a create a truly spooky atmosphere. The acting is impeccable. The sound design and editing are flawless. Someone still plays Hotline Miami on the PS Vita. The list goes on. These elements alone make the game worth playing.

    And then there's the story.

The best tl;dr I can give is that everyone will feel differently about it, and everyone should play it for themselves to determine where they fall. Love it or hate it, it's unquestionably provocative, and I applaud the writers for their willingness to take risks in such a widely-anticipated AAA game.

Many of these risks pay off. Some of them don't. I think, like Red Dead Redemption 2, this game's reputation will change with a year of retrospect.

There's a problem with, as a reviewer, calling anything a "poor story." This is a subjective qualification, but so is everything related to a review. I personally enjoyed the story, and I can see where people didn't enjoy it. I don't think, however, that calling a story "bad" because it evoked feelings of rage, anger, and sadness makes a story "bad" at all, especially if it intended to stir those emotions in the first place. Thus, in line with what I understand about criticism, the far more productive question is: "does this game succeed at what it's trying to do?" The Last of Us 2, for the most part, does succeed, but not quite as well as its predecessor.

The Last of Us, as a game, basically caught lightning in a bottle. It brought life and humanity to a dead and dehumanized world by exploring the father-daughter relationship between Ellie and Joel. From the game's opening moments, we empathize with Joel and his loss, which contributes to and grounds the remarkable ambiguity of the game's all-time-classic ending. By balancing love and hate, it had a perfect balance of ups and downs.

The Last of Us 2 is a relentless downer. The first game thematically focused on unconditional love and how that's both wonderful and sometimes downright horrifying. The second game is a revenge tale through and through. In the end, it tries to teach us that empathy is the most human characteristic we have. There are some truly powerful moments that capture what we're capable of when we forget that the people we hurt are human, just like us. It hurts to be confronted by it so brutally.

The biggest criticisms I've seen relate to "plot holes," "poor writing," and "poor characterization," all of which are terms that (no offense) people most often throw around to try to validate their feelings without doing consistent logical work. These also happen to be non-issues that, when overly explicated, completely undermine the artistic merit and intrinsic value of something being criticized. None of the characters in TLOU2 remain static. The dialogue is fluid and at times mind-blowingly good (I've tried to write dialogue--it's not easy!). And plot holes? I'll just encourage you to google "film crit hulk plot holes" and point out that they're not as huge a deal as you think. I digress. There are many moments throughout where the game succeeds incredibly at making the player feel what it wants the player to feel. If the general response is any indication, though, it just barely misses the mark. I don't think we spend enough time with Abby to care about her in the ways that the writers wanted us to. What makes this statement interesting, though, is the fact that Abby's segment is nearly as long as the entire first game.

The first game had an unforgettable cold open, and that's a big part of where the first game succeeded in its opening minutes with Joel. I think this game would have benefitted from placing us in control of Abby's first two flashback sequences from the start. Instead, we get placed in the shoes of a mystery character, and it doesn't do much for the tension during Ellie's segment. Abby also never reveals her core motivation to Ellie, which undermines what should have been her character's catharsis during the story's climax. Purposefully withheld information doesn't drive a story forward, and I'd say that's TLOU2's biggest flaw.

And yet I still loved it, and that's that.
