I'm deeply disappointed, this game was not made for the ones who played with it or love it, it was made to satisfy... who, exactly?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Terrible story writing. This is a very shocking continuation to an amazing story. They disregarded everything that was good about the main characters from the first game, and painted Joel and Tommy as two idiots who made the stupidest mistakes that no veterans who survived the apocalypse for many years would do. The story simply gave Abby a plot armor, made everything flow in a way that fits her, and in the end you get forced to play as her and break Ellie mentally and physically. I give this story 1 of the two missing fingers out of 10. Expand

The original The Last of Us game is a story about personal brokenness and loss, but also about a struggle for hope and connection despite it. This is shown in the bond between Joel and Ellie. This is shown in the bond between Joel and Ellie. We see Joel slowly come to view her as a daughter, and Ellie eventually sees him as a father. The bleak journey they take to get to that point is worth it, because it forges a strong and believable connection that we all root for. Even at game's end, when questionable decisions are made, they are based upon that connection. The tragic ending makes us wonder how their relationship will be tested by the consequences, and what these two will do together in the future. We are still rooting for them!

Sadly, The Last of Us Part II makes it clear very early on that it is done with the Joel/Ellie dynamic, at least in any positive or meaningful way. In its place, we are given a revenge mission with no chance of redemption. Unlike in Part I, there is no one to root for in this game. Our heroine is stripped of all likability, transformed into a rage-fueled murderer, occasionally breaking up the bloodlust with depression. Several new characters are introduced, but not given enough backstory or development for us to care about them, either. We are left with a collection of broken murderers who have lost nearly all positive personal connection in their lives. It's as if all the progress anyone made in Part I is completely reversed. Oddly enough, it seems that this sense of bleak hopelessness is somehow the point, as it is reinforced by a very unfulfilling conclusion. There is no reason for the journey, no 'ends to justify the means'. All that's left is a profound sense of loss for what could have been. This may be an okay concept for a 2hr film, but playing through hours and hours of it - paying to play it - feels torturous. Not to mention how much of a tonal shift it is for fans of the previous game; you'll probably enjoy this game more if you know very little of Part I. Of course, the acting, music, animation, sound design, etc. are all top tier, maybe the best ever in gaming. That's not an exaggeration, and it's the only reason I can't give this game any less than a 3. But this makes the storyline feel so much more disappointing. You can see how this team had all the talent/tools they needed to make an amazing game, but the soul was completely sucked out of it. What's left is a gilded vessel - pretty to look at, but ultimately, empty.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute waste of time and money. They took everything the players loved about the first The Last Of Us and replaced with a pretentious storyline that contradicts itself. I'll explain this later so those who don't want to be spoiled (although you're not really missing anything good) can stop reading.

The graphics are stunning and the gameplay is solid. Kudos to the people who worked on those. Unfortunately, graphics and gameplay won't be able to save The Last Of Us 2. Most of those who bought this game (including me) did it for the story, so it's no surprise that people are hating this game, since it lacks what we wanted the most: a good story.

Mind you, good story doesn't mean happy ending. This game could be as dark as you could imagine and people would still love it if only it had a good story.

The biggest difference I can appreciate between "The Last Of Us" and "The Last Of Us Part II" is it's tone. Not in the sense of the first one being about love and the second about hate, like Neil Druckmann suggested, but rather the first one being a mature, dark story, and the second one being a gruesome, edgy fanfiction written by a teenager in his/her interpretation of what horror means.

Every time something bad happened to our protagonists, I couldn't help but roll my eyes at how hard Naughty Dog was trying to get emotional. They wanted us to feel sad, but the only thing they got from me was anger, then boredom, then anger, and finally, a feeling of "What the hell just happened?".

If you're wondering whether you should play the game or not, I'd recommend you to get it on sale, or just ignore it exists. If you liked the first game, this one is going to be a tremendous letdown.

    SPOILERS FOR PART II:

-The ending of Part II contradicts the entirety of the game. Supposedly, the game is triying to show us how revenge is a cycle that leads nowhere and it only causes more pain. However, the ending show us otherwise. Abby, who avenged her father, gets a second chance with the Fireflies and a new family. Ellie, who didn't avenge Joel, looses everything she fought for. No Joel, no Tommy, no Dina, no Jesse... nothing. She ends up alone, which was her biggest fear.
If anything, this game shows us that trying to be morally superior to others only leads to a void in your life, and that, as much as it is "the right thing to do", nobody is going to be there to praise you for being politically correct.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is bad. Joel deserved better. I cannot sympathize with Abby. I do not care for most of the characters because they were killed off just like that and brushed off easily. The gameplay did not change. Everyone is suddenly gay in the apocalypse. The revenge plot is overdone way too much. The use of cheap tactics to make you feel bad like killing animals and a pregnant woman sucks and is not original. I even managed to stay away from spoilers and videos themed around them to be able to really get into the story again and instead played part 1 again, but as it turned out that was a huge mistake.... After being amazed by the graphics, already at the beginning the conversations felt kinda odd and pretty quickly I realized why the user scores turned out to be so bad. While the depth of the first story made the game so awesome it felt like a punch in the face, what you made of it and even more so how shallow and forgettable it was throughout the whole game. so my opinion:

    pro:
    -amazing graphics
-the soundtrack that always contributed to the atmosphere

    con:
    -shallow story
    -shallow characters
-amateur like writing in the dialogues
    -plot holes
    - gameplay

Why do I put gameplay in con? Its basically the same as in part one, so its OK but thanks to the pure trash that is the story line, gameplay feels more and more tiresome throughout the game because I lost hope it will turn better. And why only one point? The game isn't worth what you have to pay for it!
In a time where even small unknown studios bring out real masterpieces and even awesome graphics are a thing that you can get in early access games for 20 bucks on steam I expect a lot more for 65€! If I just wanted a game with good graphics and soundtrack most "walking simulators" on steam would have given me more for less money

As a huge fan of the last one, I still can’t believe I’ve been waiting years for this **** Joel was dead, Ellie lost everything in her life plus two fingers. This is just not the way to make your fans impressive. I probably will give this game an 8 , but as long as it’s the Last of Us, it will only deserve a 0 and a middle finger. By the way, what’s wrong with Naughty dog thinking players want to play Abby for 8 hours after she killed Joel?! It’s not enjoyable and I still want to get the revenge during every minute of it. The worst part is, Naughty dog took that decision from players and ‘help’ players choose the ‘right’ choice. Seriously, I don’t need your opinion, I just want to get the **** done.
Anyway, I will definitely not buy the sequel (I really hope there is not).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, I thought The Last of Us Part II was not a very good game. I was a huge fan of The Last of Us on PS3, so the disappointment is really high for this sequel. That said, I'll talk about the positives first.

    Pros:
I liked the game's graphics. They were amazing, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Also, the music is very good and the voice acting is top notch. While I like some of gameplay aspects, overall, I thought it was serviceable, so not really a pro but also not a con either.

    Cons:
The story is absolutely atrocious. A lot of the story aspects, such as the storytelling and the execution of the story's ideas, killed any hope this game had for me from thinking this game is amazing. The story is a generic revenge plot that revolves around the "revenge is bad" trope that has been done many times in the past (more on this later). My biggest criticism of the entire game, from a story narrative standpoint, was the execution surrounding Joel's death. I have zero issue with Joel dying, but how he dies, considering how beloved he is as a character, is important and the story narrative completely discards Joel for no reason. Consider his murderer, Abby, is saved by Joel twice before Abby decides to murder him, it completely killed any chance of caring about the character development and backstory for Abby (more on this later). On that thought, Manny spitting on Joel's corpse was such an insult to his character. On the theme of character deaths, every single major death in the game is completely forgotten about as soon as they die, with the exception of Joel. When a major character dies, you never ever hear about them, by name, again for the remainder of the game. The character development for most of the characters in this game is virtually non-existent, including Ellie. They are exactly the same at the beginning of the game as they were at the end of the game. Now, let's talk about Abby, the most controversial character in The Last of Us Part II. Abby is my least favorite character and one of the biggest reason why this story sucks because the game's narrative required me to feel sympathetic for her for the entire backstory to work. I get her backstory that she's vengeful because Joel was responsible for her dad's death, but the game failed miserably to convince me to empathize with her. I still wanted her dead, even by the end of the game and getting all her backstory. Maybe it could have worked if Joel's death was done later and we got some backstory of Abby beforehand, but that's not what happened. The game chose to make me play as her immediately following Joel's death. As soon as I started playing as Abby was when I stopped having fun with this game and stopped enjoying the story. This game also has one of the worst endings I have ever seen in a video game. In order for the generic revenge plot to work, Abby should have been killed by Ellie to justify the narrative choice to kill Joel off, but Ellie lets her go because the story wanted to tell the message of "revenge is bad!", which I think it was a bad narrative choice because it is anti-climatic, non-conclusive, and completely negates the purpose of Joel's death. On that point, they repeated the beat of "revenge is bad" so much that it gets aggravating by the end of the game. Finally, while I stated that I liked some of the aspect relating to the gameplay, there are pacing issues and several spots that make the gameplay feel repetitive and mindless, and I got really bored.

I was so disappointed overall. I don't get how this game was critically acclaimed consider all the issues with the game, which most of it deserves the criticism.
