This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm very sad to write this review. I ignored the review bombing in hopes that it was just angry fans stirring up trouble as they always do.

I'm going to start with the fact that people think people that are angry are just mad because of the LGBT references... The Last of Us: Left Behind introduced Ellie as gay, and it scored very well. Most people don't care about a character's sexual orientation, as long as the story is good. With that being said, the LGBT part of the story did seem to be "in my face" a lot, and made me want to say, "Yeah I get it, they are in love, cool. Get back to the story.", but I liked both Ellie and Dina.

The action/graphics in the game were very well done, there is no argument towards the technical aspect of this game being done well, that is the only reason why this review has a 1 and no a flat-out 0 though, I have to admit.

After that, this is where the positive/neutral things end. The entire point of the first game was looking for the cure, there has to be a cure. It was a good story developing Joel and Ellie as a "family" and developing their characters.

This story basically "forgot" everything that had happened in the first game, and ignored all of the development of Joel altogether. He was a very cautious person and didn't trust anyone, and in the second game this was thrown out of the window.

Abby kills Joel very early in the game, and it's unknown why, until you find out that the little girl that Joel saved in the first game was Abby, and she kills him because he killed her Dad, the doctor.

There is a point as well where you play as Abby, because it wants you to relate to her character, and I have to be honest, the moment she killed Joel she was no longer an interesting character, she was the antagonist. You're not going to make me relate with a character by trying to show their human side, after they kill the character that you've grown to love throughout the first game. I'm on Joel and Ellie's side, no matter who has to die.
After this, you have this entire drawn out story where Ellie murders everyone in her path to get to Abby for revenge, and then develop the relationship between her and Dina throughout this story, all for nothing.

Ellie kills Abby's friends, Abby kills Jessie, and after all of this... After all of the killing and fighting, at the end of the game, Dina tells Ellie not to leave, and Ellie leaves anyway to go find Abby. You have a long drawn out fight with Abby, and then Ellie lets Abby go.

All of the people that died in the game, was for nothing. All of the development between Ellie and Dina was for nothing. Abby leaves, Ellie loses her guitar playing fingers, Dina leaves, and Ellie is alone. They threw it all away at the end for what? To make you want a third game? I am not confident in Naughty Dog's ability to do anything except make a game that is technically good with scenery and action at this point.

The only thing that this game has done was disappoint me in Naughty Dog's ability to write a compelling story to keep me engaged, and it's very obvious that they struggle at "closing" a story that they were trying to make. If there would have been some type of closure, it would have been a better ending. Instead, they just left it as a cliffhanger, and made the entire game you just fought through felt like it was a hopeless waste of time.

What was the point anyway? Abby kills Joel, You kill everyone to get to Abby, Dina leaves you, and you don't even kill Abby. The ending is: Ellie loses everything, and you don't really have anything resolved other than you know why Abby killed Joel. There is no closure.

As a final note, the reason for the bad review is not BECAUSE Joel died. It's because of the way that the story was told. It was written and done early for shock value, and then they tried to piece together the reasoning afterwards. There are many games where main characters die, and it's done in a way to really make you love the game. This is not one of them. If they would have told Abby's story beforehand and let us grow to like the character, and let us understand her motives, in order to lead up to a climax where she kills Joel and we understand why she did it, then that would have worked much better. But instead, they chose to go for "shock value" points and it hurt the story a lot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is just so bad overall. You killed off the beloved relationship we all loved in the first game. You false advertised and deceived us into thinking Joel was going to be around or that we’d only play as Ellie. Gameplay is the same as before except now it feels only tedious, maybe a little crack in the wall is what’s different. And a terrible ending, everything Joel and Ellie endured and all for what? NOTHING?! Ellie loses everything and Abby just walks away. I’ve waited years upon years for this, and this is what I get in return. I rate it a 1 because at least the game runs and can function. I tried to play this game as non-biased as possible. But with all my desire, I did not succeed.
If without spoilers, the game is very beautiful and dark. It has very good musical accompaniment. A lot of new mechanics, so compared to the first part of the game has become more lively, but the plot destroys everything.

I found it difficult to start playing as Abby but I loved the character by the end. Keep an open mind and enjoy it for what it is. Don’t listen to the hate, make your own opinions Expand

A game worth playing. From its technical accomplishments to its interesting narrative structure. Although some decisions taken by the characters may be hard to accept or agree with, the full story goes beyond them, showing that the way of ending the cycles of violence comes with a great cost, forgiveness.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is different and feels deep. This game is unique in its very own and has given me an impression that I have never actually gotten from any other game. In such an apocalypse, madness is a thing and therefore fear, sorrow, indefinite loss and revenge definitely has its place. Not everything is smooth in reality and things can hurt sometimes. Joel killed so many people to save Ellie in the first part, and that is okay for you haters??? This game proves that everything has its consequences, no matter how painful they are. The leaks spoiled this game. If you read the leaks and that say the game is bad without playing it, you will never get the meant to be experience. It is just like, if you knew Iron-man was going to die in End Game beforehand, you would most likely hated the movie, easily hated it. And that's because you loved him. But since you watched the movie and let the movie lead you to it, you felt it and understood it. Same here. So this game is a must play, and deserves a chance to be understood. If you saw some description of a scene from a leak and say that you can't face it, I have nothing else but to say that you are a **** in front of reality. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely incredible. That’s the only way I can describe this game. It provides a nuanced and thought provoking continuation of the first game’s ending that leaves players pondering the story for days. The sad truth of the story is that it revolves around Joel’s fateful decision to give Ellie a chance at life, but the way he did it basically makes it impossible for Ellie to find happiness. Every action has a consequence, and Joel’s atrocities against the fireflies ends up coming back to bite Ellie. At the end of the day, the game feels like you’re playing in an alternate reality where Joel made the wrong decision. The correct series of events seems to end with Ellie dying on the operating table and saving the world, but not all things have happy endings. To say that the characters didn’t progress well through this story is a flat out lie, because this story thoroughly felt like the place that the characters would naturally end up. Overall, it would be most fitting to package both games as a single story, because both feel so essential to each other. PLAY THIS GAME. It’ll make you feel like crap, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game... it means it’s making you think. And that, my friends, is what all media should strive to do. Bravo Naughty Dog. Can’t wait to see what new IP or sequel you bake up next. Expand

Great game with plenty of unwarranted hate. Never has a game come out with this many gamers missing the mark of the story. It's very to sad to see how many people didn't actually even realize what this story was trying to ultimately convey about the cycle of violence. The game shows the impact one act of violence can have and the domino effect it creates. Not some generic revenge story with a perfect good guy wins resolution. Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey both deliver excellent performances alongside a great script and story. Gameplay is brutal and crunchy making the player feel every gun shot and every swing of Ellie's knife. Gameplay is mixed up with the player taking on the game from a Abbys perspective showing a different perspective of the story. With the game originally creating a strong hate for Abby, over your time with her you start to understand and sympathize her as a character understanding that her motivations and experiences aren’t that different than Ellie‘s. This proved to be a great addition showing how non black and white the story is. Makes you rethink everything you thought you knew and makes you question between what's right and what's wrong and more importantly who's in the right and wrong in this situation, Ellie or Abby? That is the question that many gamers will be asking themselves well playing, and it's not a easy one to answer, even though at first it may seem to be. The Last of Us Part 2 is not a game that many will understand or appreciate. It's not a story everyone will enjoy not necessarily because it is bad, but because it requires the player to look into the story critically, being open minded, sometimes putting emotion to the side to better understand the actions of the characters and their motivations, and even trying to put yourself in the shoes of both Abby and Ellie to better grasp their thinking/headspace. Overall The Last of Us Part 2 is a masterfully crafted game with a incredibly in depth and mind provoking story. I beg anyone to try the game for themselves before making up their mind as I'm sure it will be worth your while. Expand

Ellis sexuality was fine to each there own I’m glad the devs took a bold action but the games ending was just bad Abby was a horrible character with no redemption. So many other games have done the “ killing you won’t change anything” trope much better also if the message is revenge is not good then don’t make me play a character like Abby who constantly talks about other survivors as savages who deserve what they get. This game would’ve been better if Abby had just joined her friends. Overall a waste of time due to an ending unable to match its predecessor and its gameplay. Expand
