This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Categorically one of the best games of the year, if not all time. Such a beautiful game with so many different areas/sceneries to visit along the way. The way it was written was amazing.. pacing the action with the story at different intervals and interweaving a beautifully tragic narrative. They didn't have any other choice than to go down this path. If they kept Joel & Ellie as protagonists going forward, the game would be like any other game... boring, repetitive and almost a carbon copy of the last 20 years worth of action gaming narrative. What naughty dog has done is create a wonderful epic that I thoroughly enjoyed. Both the gameplay and storytelling is to be commended. I'm in awe! Expand

Other reviewers have pointed out that the characters and or story are badly written and would rate the game on that criticism alone a 0 or 1. I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I think the characters were completely believable in their actions and I think more than enough time was spend on showing where their motivation comes from.

Even if you disagree with me on this after you complete the game, that's okay, this game is still a technical master piece. From the graphics, amazing animations and facial expressions, the controls and combat, no other game before has executed this level of excellence before in my humble opinion (the last game to make me feel that was Red Dead Redemption 2).

The atmosphere this game manages to bring on screen which supported by incredible sound design and voice acting is nothing short of amazing.

Playing this game gave me an intense feeling of dread, hope, anger, joy and peace.

To describe The Last of Us Part II in one word: Intense

One of the best stories in video games so far. A story not about revenge, but about forgiveness. I hope more games get inspired about creating such strong emotions on players. This is a must of this generation.

Just finished it. Loved it. Beautiful graphics and animation, fun gameplay, Ellie is a badass and I love playing as her. There is a point about 13 hours ish in that something happens and it last to long in my opinion. The whole game could have been cut down by about 6 hours probably and been a little more focused m. Overall I love it and I hope they do some DLC or a 3ed game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all I just want to say that yes, I did enjoy the game and I am a HUGE fanboy of the first one. I tried to look at things from a very critical side, ignring my feelings towards the first game so I could be impartial in the second one.

I was very afraid that the game would suck, I went in thinking it would be filled with SJW propaganda and things like that, but The Last of Us Part II surprised me. I didn't see a single example of SJW propaganda. Many would argue that Ellie being a lesbian and Lev being a transgender would be considered SJW propaganda, but those two facts mean nothing to the narrative. They're normal characters.
About Lev, they do bring up that he is/was a girl, but it is in a single moment in the history, and it didn't bother me at all.

Just wanting to clarify here that I finished the game on HARD difficulty and with 21h of playtime.

    SOUNDTRACK

Absolutely **** gorgeous. It is **** amazing, way better than the one in the first game (which is also incredible). I was afraid that it would be just a copy of the first one's soundtrack, but that isn't the case.

    10/10

    GAMEPLAY

I found the gameplay to be very fun. Lots of ways to deal with enemies, many improvements from the gameplay found in the first game. The animations are elder god tier, elli has unique animations for each type of item she grabs on the map. Her facial expressions are ULTRA REALISTIC. it really impressed me the attention to detail in almost every part of the game.

    10/10

    GRAPHICS

    ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.

Sometimes I couldn't even see the difference between cutscene and actual gameplay, the most gorgeous game out there and that is a FACT.

Lightning, models, map assets, EVERYTHING is incredibly detailed.

    11/10

    NARRATIVE

Okay, now we come to the hard part of the review for me.

I HONESTLY don't know why the **** the game is getting SO MUCH HATE. I honestly think 90% of the reviews on metacritic are from people that haven't played/finished the game.

For those who don't know, Joel dies in the first 2 hours of gameplay. I honestly got hit really hard with it, i didn't want to believe he was actually dead and thought "oh **** they ruined the game", but they didn't. Abby (The strong woman) kills Joel because Joel killed her father in the end of the first game, when he enters the surgery room, he kills the first doctor which is Abby's father, and she gets pissed and gets on a revenge trip to kill Joel.

After Abby kills Joel, Ellie goes on a revenge trip to kill Abby and her friends, which completely changes her character. Ellie in the start of the game (before Joel's death) was still a "child", she would never do the things she does as engame Ellie.

It is a simple plot, but it changed me in some ways I can't even describe. I was overwhelmed by feelings after Joel dies, but i was REALLY overwhelmed by them when the game ended. Trust me on this one people, play the game first before giving a opinion about it. It is a videogame, it is meant to be PLAYED.

I was wrong when i thought it couldn't surpass the first game, which was my favourite game of all time.

11/10. (Still think Joel should have gotten more screentime, though.)

THE GAME ISN'T PERFECT, BUT IT IS A DAMN MASTERPIECE. 10/10.

Ok Neil Druckman, you've buyed me with just the one music store scene where Ellie plays "Take one me". That's the most beautiful scene in gaming history. The face expressions, the voices, the melody. All that worked just perfect in that moment. I'll give 10/10 just for that one scene.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I both can and can not understand the hate this game gets. In a world where almost every game has predatory monetization, single-player story-based games can still provide riveting classic experiences. However, so many games are predictable and dry. They don't introduce anything new or out of the ordinary. Joel was a remarkable character and I was so disappointed to see him die, but in hindsight, it was such a traumatic experience that it only proves to me what a fantastic job they did with the franchise. When he was dead I wanted revenge, that revenge is ingrained in us in all of media, entertainment, and politics, etc. But what I found remarkable about The Last of Us is that it is both literal (the last humans on earth) and it is about something metaphysical, the last bit of our humanity, our consciousness, our ethics, etc. What separates us from the undead or animals is a moving target, a slow decaying gradient of ethics. Nobody is innocent anymore, NONE of us could make the right decisions anymore. Joel is not innocent, we can not decide who deserves to live and die in a world where people have such innate trauma that they can't possibly get by without making horrible choices. The only innocents died early. The game slowly made me go from that Pulp Fiction-type revenge to remorse, then to apathy, then to slowly care for his killer. By the end of the game I did not know who I wanted to live and who I wanted to die. I just saw this as a masterpiece in all facets. When what I want in a story doesn't **** matter, I am engaged the most because anything could happen. I loved this game. It may in time pass TLOU 1 in my rankings. Right now it is at maybe my 5-10th favorite game of all time. People love to hate this game, and I hope they re-look at it in a few years. Expand
