    Where the first game had heart, relatable emotions (both good and bad) and empathy, this one has hate, selfishness, narcissistic self-absorption and destructive anger - with most of it seeming bizarre and inexplicable.

It doesn't matter if it fits their character or makes sense, if it needs to be done to keep things grim then it'll happen.

    Make no mistake, these aren't characters so much as they are caricatures; they're really that distorted and cartoonish.

    The same goes for the way the plot unfolds; it doesn't matter if it seems contrived or far-fetched or if it seems incredibly improbable - if it allows an easy path to create further trouble, it's gonna happen whether it's convincing or not.

    It's like the author thinks the players are in their early teens, an odd thing considering the game is 18+ only.

    Honestly, the vast majority of people in this game are damaged goods. They don't want happiness nor do they seek any way to resolve their problems other than violence. They cannot even disagree when simply discussing things without insults and bitterness. Is it something in the water?

    I believe history teaches us that most people come together and put aside their differences in times of conflict, when the need for survival is greatest. In this post-apocalypse? People just double down and desire more suffering. It's crazy. More importantly though, it's lazy, shallow and I didn't find it in anyway convincing.

    So, the game supposedly wants me to feel emotions, it's supposed to be the main draw but I simply couldn't, not after the first 5 hours. Most of these people are hopeless, a lost cause. They're lemmings and all I could do was watch as they pointlessly flail about, fighting over each other to reach the cliff edge.

    Possibly the most laughable decision is to create a character that kills a beloved one from the first game and then force you to play as that character WITHOUT any backstory until later. I'm assuming they did that to try and get you to like/understand them but that's a colossal task that requires a skill waaaaay beyond the person who wrote this.

    It's a ridiculous thing to do. By the time I found out more, I already had gotten used to hating the character completely and simply didn't care. They should have made this whole game about them and then brought them into contact with the characters that we know in a third game.

    And the ending? Good grief. I'm guessing it was supposed to be thought provoking and meaningful but it was obvious that it was going to be one of the options they went for. The way it happens though is just bland and without any discernible motivation. There is no clue that I can see as to why Ellie would choose what she did, especially since she goes out of her way from an especially safe and comforting place, long after emotions would have died down, to get to that point.

    It's just another example of a character choosing to do something 'just because'. Presumably because the writer got lost in his own world and thought it MUST be an amazing idea but we've seen endings like this many times and done much better. Like I said before, do they not know that mature, older people might play this? The game has literally nothing new to say, no believable means of delivery and no convincing reason for the ending, despite the fact that their are at least 3-5 different outcomes that would have had more impact, especially if player choice was allowed.

    This game COULD have had me reeling from certain events, if I was actually a participant but I certainly didn't have the the ability to change/direct anything as the story is linear and involves no decision making or interesting choice/consequence systems - in a high budget game in 2020 no less.....:S

    Tehcnically (graphics and sound) the game is outstanding. The combat is fairly dated and nothing new, a 7/10. The skill trees are pointless. There's too much wandering about here and there and it spoils the pacing. The new monsters are mostly enjoyable. The last act is bloated.

    In case you didn't guess, I disliked the game. It's not canon to me. Just remember the first game and ignore this. Look it up on youtube if you're really curious.    … Expand

    Honestamente este juego no es mas que una sombra de lo que fue su primera parte. Si nadie desea creer en la critica que le hacemos muchos consumidores de este juego entonces que vean por si mismos gameplays y lo prueben tan solo una muestra del despropósito que se planean llevar a casa.

First off i gave this game a 3 because come on, you can't deny those gorgeous graphics. A no name npc's daughter seeks revenge for her father who was about to kill a child? Don't get me wrong she has every right to seek revenge, but who the hell was he? We didn't even know his name. And not only was this irrelevant **** a 'protagonist' that *spoiler alert* kills joel, but ellie's dumbass lets her walk free in that appalling ending. Might i add that barbaric sex scene which was very insignificant to the story and didnt humanize these new and impertinent characters because news flash, we were forced to sympathize with them and no one did. Neil, you really blew it with this. I think neil is trying to use this game to explore his freakish sexual fantasies, and force feed us his agenda. The lgbtq+ community couldn't even bare this mess of a game. The old ellie protected herself from david and in the end killed him, but this new ellie is so soft for letting abby go free. Abby literally gets to enjoy life with her new beau while ellie sits on the beach crying and goes home to a cold and empty bed. Alone. Don't even cry, because you had optimal time to go and sneak kill her. I had hope that maybe this game could live up to its predecessor, but i was mistaken. This game is a poor excuse for a sequel and seems like a horribly written wattpad fanfiction. The new characters are just plain boring and some pay little to no purpose to the plot. The plot is lazy and bland and the original characters completely abandon their previous personality traits and deviate from past lessons that were learnt. Example: TLOU showed a funny light-hearted ellie that did everything it took to protect herself and joel. Joel was a sceptical/distrustful person and didn't trust people easily, meaning he didnt disclose information to people he didnt trust. ESPECIALLY to strangers. TLOU2 shows a darker ellie. She's not light-hearted and she finds but yet doesnt kill the monster of all monsters: abby. Joel (and Tommy) are friendly with everyone and tells complete strangers their names, which some of you may know causes Joel's demise. Now i hope you see these trends because obviously they have deviated personality wise from the first one. Joel deserved to be avenged. He deserved better. I'm mostly disappointed in ellie because she acted kind of like a **** to joel in the beginning and still didnt avenge him in the end. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GAME. This game was a hard pill to swallow but to the place that i bought this game, i would like a refund.… Expand

    I just completed the main campaign for The Last of Us Part II with a clock time of 29:15. After years of waiting for this release, it’s clear that the trailers advertised and the final product presented false advertisement and swapped out character models that did not reflect what I thought I was receiving for $60. Having said that, I cannot recommend this game due to a few reasons that impacted my playthrough. Please see below.

    I will start out with the obvious. I am still completely blown away with the technical capabilities presented on my PS4 Pro from this game. The environments and level design are beautiful and very detailed. I never expected to see such invigorating life in this world that they built. The details are incredible, and some areas are middle to large in scope.

    The animations are fluid and improved over the original on the PS3. The jump mechanic of Ellie is a neat and welcoming addition to the gameplay and verticality implemented in The Last of Us Part II. It gave me additional playstyle opportunities even though it felt just like Uncharted 4. Again, not a bad thing!

    The gameplay is pretty decent. I noticed many improvements and refinements over the original game, but nothing after a few hours that felt new. It reminded me of RDR2 giving me a “stiff” feeling whereas the original felt a little more loose.

    The story is where I noticed a lot of inconsistencies that didn’t match the trailers advertised. I thought okay, maybe it was an update, but then I began seeing more and more. Naughty Dog lied an put Jesse in a cutscene (when I was going through WLF territory) where the trailer depicted an older Joel. I felt extremely disrespected the way they killed him off and had diverse characters do him this way. It felt forced and like an agenda was being pushed and I did not feel that. I also did not like that they went to the level of spitting on him with the guy who looks like Neil Druckman. Again, I love the characters from the original, but the characters and the way they are treated in The Last of Us II just feels like “filler” and to show shock value. It reminded me of a b horror movie with a large body count. Why did we not get the old gruff Joel and instead this younger Joel? Was the marketing team doing a bait and switch? I felt like I was getting a different experience and not the one I wanted.
    Why were there many political themes heavily forced and pushed throughout the game? I noticed a lot of white characters being killed in inhumane ways by other diversities and again, it just felt like a message was being forced or sent. Other people wont mind this, but I wasn’t a fan of this. In fact, it was constantly pressed throughout the cutscenes of the story.
    The XXX scene…what was the context other than incorporating it during Abby’s time throughout the campaign? Her character I couldn’t feel bad for after the way the writers did Joel and Ellie’s new personality/character over.
    The ending and final boss fight was underwhelming. Don’t expect a huge finale per se, but if your expectations are low, you may enjoy it. I put in so many hours and killed so many people to ultimately let Abby go and it felt like a punch to my stomach. I think the writers were going for this, but it just made me feel that this was not The Last of Us Part II’s game that true fans of the original wanted.
    If you love the characters of the original, I can’t recommend the sequel due to the inconsistencies, the ways beloved characters were treated and killed off to push a new controversial character that wasn’t as relatable as I would have hoped for. It felt as if a whole different team made this game, but with the themes of feminism, LGBQT, politics, etc. Why is there such a heavy push for these themes? I understand their viewpoints, but I didn’t need to see this within every cutscene.
    I was completely underwhelmed by the game due to its rich narrative. The Last of Us is a story-based game and this story felt cheap and quickly thrown together for shock value and execution. If you don’t care about the narrative you may enjoy the game, but you will have themes of SJW, feminism, LGBQT, Violence, and more. The way they perceived the Seraphytes (A Christian cult group) was also disturbing. I feel offended as I am a Christian and we certainly don’t want to harm or kill those who sin or have different beliefs. This experience felt like a porno. I’m baffled.    … Expand

    As a massive fan of the original, I've waited for this game for 7 years. The Last of Us Part II is a massive disappointment. The characters are at best forgettable, while many of them being downright awful. The story feels unmemorable in contrast to the first game. The ending feels bleak and pointless. I absolutely adore the first game and so so badly wish that I could have enjoyed the sequel. The graphics are phenomenal but that's really the only positive thing I can say after playing this game.    … Expand

I respect the work of Naughty Dog (although Naughty America is better suited for it now) and understand the obstacles that both the game and its developers have gone through, but I believe that the amount of effort spent should not overstate/justify the quality of the product/activity, especially if this product is of questionable quality. You will ask: "Why do you urge to look at the game through the context and at the same time say not to take into account the developers' work? - Because what we got was their conscious decision, in particular Neil Drakman. If we're talking about objective evaluation, it's 8/10.

    Graphics. On my original ps4, the game looks amazing. There's nothing to say - you can see everything for yourself.

    The gameplay was moved from the first part and made according to all the canons of a good sequel - everything became bigger and better. But the problem is that the gameplay of the first part was good for your time and as long as you don't improve it, you'll have the gameplay of the last of us 2013. But that's a question for today's game industry and its stagnation.

    It's a story. The main idea of a cycle of violence and eternal revenge, though not new, is definitely interesting. However, this idea, too, should be disclosed and do it well, which, in my opinion, the game did not work. All because of the huge amount of "gray morality.
    The sound. Beautiful.
    Control. Comfortable and intuitive.



    And now about what's going on around here. Everyone understands that the positioning and marketing of the product is sometimes directly responsible for its success and considering who the game is focused on and what ideas it carries, you know - that's the problem. Yes, it's an artistic value. I think only the lazy one didn't reproach the game for its SJW policy. However, I don't think that makes the game really terrible. The problem is not in any politics at all, but in its propaganda and the quality of this propaganda. If the game was about traditional values and criticism of LGBT - it would not change my assessment. Nobody likes to be hung up (not even in direct text) with any position. And this is not about homophobia and its derivatives, but about how people feel about another complaint from minorities in their infringement of rights. Even by printing this text, I understand that again someone's rights will be violated and feelings will be offended. Most people are tired of it. Personally, I don't like it when grief-creators create another "Mary Sue" whether it's a woman or a man, because I remember very well the time when they were able to create strong and independent women, and that was due to the script or the author's idea, not the narrative of modern trends. And you know what? The characters were beautiful. Once again, I have immeasurably respect for every person, and the rights activists, among others. I have nothing against who I play for. It doesn't matter to me who the nationality or color is. But please, let us not create a negative attitude to our liberal movement with our propaganda. Let's respect everyone's interests, not interpret only our own. Let us be free as long as our freedom is not restricted by the freedom of others. Let us justify and prescribe our characters. Let's just be a little more civilized.

    With this assessment, I expressed my attitude not only to TLOU 2, but to the industry as a whole. Maybe you will miss this review or consider it stupid, or maybe you will read it and agree with what is going on. Only know that by projecting your opinion/position on the masses, be able to evaluate what it is for and for whom.

    Abysmal writing. Not a single likeable character, plotholes everywhere, worst ending of all time and insanely preachy. ND spent the entire development cycle sniffing his own farts and patting himself on the back for this turd of a game. If you liked the first tlou, avoid this trash at all cost.

    The whole point of the first game was that the vaccine wasn't the solution to fix the problem in the world. The real solution was the bonding of humanity and surviving together. The bond of a father & daughter figure. The second game completely missed the point.

    The games message at the end is... (SPOILERS BELOW!)

    That revenge is bad. It starts with Abbie getting her own personal revenge by killing joel. Then through out the game, Ellie murders people to get to Abbie so she can get her revenge, yet at the very end "Murder bad!" So Ellie lets Abbie live and Abbie gets to take the person she cares about away.

    So basically Ellie isnt allowed to get revenge as "Getting revenge means bad.". Yet, Abbie in the end, was rewarded for her revenge quest.

    How the hell is this a proper story? It makes no sense to me!    … Expand

    ND gameplay is always average at best. You don't play ND games because of their gameplay, you play it for the amazing visuals and sound, the music, and the story. Their games are always breathtakingly gorgeous. Music is always well done. So in a way, they really don't get bonus points for doing what ND is known for.

    Troy Baker is at his absolute best and hit a grand slam every time he was at the plate. Ashley Johnson was amazing. This doesn't mean the dialogue was well written, far from it.

    The story is horrendous. Character development was weak. Where is the "Bill"? The "Tess"? The "Ish" (even though you never meet him! he was awesome!)? It was ultra violent for the sake of being ultra violent. And so much so early, that it lessened the impact of it as the game progressed. It completely veered from the 2016 announcement trailer and the last big trailer that showed Joel (and not Jesse) saying "You think I'd let you do this on your own?".

    Someone, somewhere decided that a story rewrite was in order which resulted in the near year delay. Flashbacks were re-used to save development dollar.

    It could have been the coda for the PS4 before the arrival of the PS5. It's just disappointing.    … Expand

That part of the story i was happy about, the problem for me are the major components/twists. Joel, this nonsense Abby chick, just makes no sense to me. The context is SO much worse man, we have to play as the person that kills our favorite character???? my issues are with the "twists". I cant believe I waited 7 years, and I got this messed up storyline of a game. I want to see the original script and see what the original game was going to be like.… Expand

    Unfortunately though, this game is very poorly written and the ending was disappointing. I think most people would agree the if the sequence of events in this game were different, it would've been a little more enjoyable.

    While I enjoyed the Last of Us so much and was one of my favorite Games on PS3, this is horrible.
    They destroyed the Characters and Story so much, its laughable.

    Absolute trash story...you can't make this stuff up. As a massive fan of the first installment, I just can't believe they went for this story. The graphics are incredible, the gameplay is smooth, but after looking at how things turned out in the story, I literally didn't feel like playing anymore. I got a physycal copy and I'm gonna sell it for half the price. This game isn't worth it.

    I prefer PC gamer, a few years ago i buy PS4 especially fo The Last Of Us - and i really waiting for the part 2, as it turned out - in vain, the 2nd part only spoiled the memories of the original game.

But the game is a perfect garbage for several reasons, the most important are the poorly planned ideas of the developers for having murdered Joel in the first hour of the game and in a stupid way , it seems as if he were flanking the character to the point that he forgot that they are in a **** apocalyptic world where you should not trust anyone or this is how he acted and thought in the first game. Here his death makes it look like it had to happen because the director got bored of Joel and said hey why he is not dying now ?, seriously lazy and forced his death .. And there are other things as the story developed in favor of including political propaganda and giving those pacifist messages that are irrelevant or run in a delayed way. Or that characters like Dyna, abby and even ellie herself are quite boring. 4/10 The game looks nice, the music is fine, it doesn't innovate much the gameplay of the first game and that's all .. 4/10… Expand

    This game did everything it could to destroy the characters we know and love from the first game. Characters we knew from the first game are dumb down and killed to keep the plot moving. For example, Tommy and Joel, veteran survivors of the apocalypse who had been on the run from pursuers, conveniently give away their identity to a group of strangers, thereby giving the game a convenient way to start its revenge plot. Joel is made out to be the villain for killing people and Abby's father. On the contrary, Abby is the true villain of the story. Joel, though flawed, had a justifiable reason to kill people - he did it to protect his daughter. Abby is a brute who only killed people for revenge. She did not hesitate to torture and kill Joel after he had saved her multiple times in past. It also is hinted that Abby killed anyone whose name was Joel. Basically, Abby is the scum of the earth. I honestly thought nothing would bring me more satisfaction than seeing Abby die at the hands of Ellie. I was wrong. The game not only robbed me of that joy and then spat in my face by making the villain, Abby, the new protagonist of the game for an extensive amount of time. No matter how the game tried to emotionally manipulate me into liking Abby (giving her a dog while making Ellie kill a dog), I find her to be the true villain of the game.

    Major character decisions in the story are laughably unreasonable. Besides what I just mentioned in the previous paragraph about Tommy and Joel, Abby spared Elli after she had witnessed Joel's death at Abby's hands and knowing full well Elli will seek revenge for his death. For some inexplicable reasons, Abby was later shocked that Ellie was hunting her down. In the final fight of the game, Ellie, going against all reasons, spared Abby, rendering the whole game pointless. So it seems only the villain of the game, Abby, gets what she want in this revenge plot.

    All these things from above lead me to the conclusion that Neil Druckmann is a talentless hack who has been riding on the success of the others. Furthermore, it is also likely that Neil Druckmann inserted himself in the game in various ways, One as Abby's henchman who spat on Joel's corpse and another as a doctor on an ID card who is 100% intellect and is part of the organization called New Dogs.    … Expand

    Joel dies in a shameful way with a golf club for a character known as Abby (She-Hulk) whose speech is: Stupid old man.

    After that we set out to seek revenge. We killed thousands of people during the entire campaign (including women, men and dogs) in order to find and kill Joel’s killer.

    Naughty Dog lied to fans in that trailer where Joel is shown covering Ellie's mouth and saying: I won't let you do this alone. The truth is that it is Jesse and not Joel, they did that just to make fans buy this game.

    And it is worth remembering that Naughty Dog was censoring youtubers who said something about the leaks and were also censoring on Twitter. Sony and ND have turned off comments and likes on their videos. I would not be surprised if someone tells me that these reviews of these "game sites" and some youtubers were paid    … Expand

    In the initial hours of the game Joel dies for Abby, a weird choice but is understandable...
    But then we have the game ending that doesn't make any sense because in the whole game Ellie is searching for her veagence against Abby ( a not so good character ) but at the end she doesn't kill her ( lol ), leting this not finished journey feeling in the game ending.
    Overal a very good gameplay but a not so good history... What ruins a few part of the whole experience.

I was so ready to play as Joel and Ellie once again with new characters alongside them in order to destroy what I thought would be resisting remnants of the fireflies.

    What I got was: Joel died too early (in my opinion shouldn't have died), playing as buff chick I did not care about, seeing Ellie in the end with no vengeance, having Tommy become some whiney inconsistent **** and have the only good new meaningful character Jesse get killed. Nice.

    Yes, the graphics were sick, awesome gameplay, fun new cinematics, new engine, smooth combat system and blah blah blah. But all I cared about was the story. At this moment I feel like Don Corleone when they kill his son in broad daylight and I wish I never got a sequel...

    I beg that Naughty Dog revisits this sequel and does it right by our expectations or it will surely dive into consumer hatred for is a previously famous and strong brand.    … Expand

    Amazing graphics with solid game play. The feel is familiar while refreshed enough to enjoy. The reason for the score of 3 is the story. This feels like it is driven by spite, and I am unsure what drives it. I have no interest in the franchise going forward, and recommend you avoid this game at all cost to not sully the masterpiece that the first was. .

    Entertainment 1/10 The bottom line is, the game isn't fun. It was a chore to play, with the story unable to motivate me nothing other than looking at the assets was enjoyable. Combat isn't fun even though it's smooth, and exploration isn't an option. My playthrough simply wasn't enjoyable.

    It feels like they were just trying to be edgy.
    The only thing this has going for it is graphics.

    It's strange to see alot of the gripes people have with this one are also present within the first game, it's like they forgot what the first game was even about. The last of us part 2 is like a polished last of us with a story that is darker and more serious in many aspects.     First off I need to state how excited I was for this game, after playing through the first one I was amazed by the story telling, but now I’m destroyed. How are these even the same game creators? This is nothing but political drivel and unlikable characters. The game doesn’t improve on anything and all it does is pander.     1. Visually stunning, scenes, environment, sound, all good. That's where it ends.
    2. Clunky controls, jump button is an absolute joke.
    3. Don't even get me started with the lazy and absurd, lousy 30-hour time-filler. That's not a story. The ending literally proves its meaningless.
    4. Destroying iconic characters the entire fan base loves in a disrespectful way and spitting in our faces was absolutely ridiculous.
    5. Nothing else changed. New characters and 'gameplay' were boring after the first 10 hours.

    Only because of the plot I give a low rating. The graphics are good, the gameplay is good. But the plot. He spoils everything. It's like a spit in the souls of fans. How can you enjoy the game when in the very beginning they destroy what you love? The first part is forever in the heart. The second part, I hate.

Such a fan disservice the story and a complete 180 from the magic the Last of Us captured years ago. This game could've easily picked up from where the last game ended and gone from there. It had every element a narrative driven experience is expected to while also mantaining a somewhat entertaining gameplay. Charismatic yet flawed very close to human characters? An atmosphere that invites to immersion and a plot on par with great Hollywood productions.

    Sadly the last of us part 2 lacks in every aspect aforementioned. The intelligent almost human narrative has turned into a cartoonish almost revenge simple plot that even at that fails to deliver.

    Naughty dog decided to exchange clever story twists and down to earth dialogues for mere shock value and cheap generic bits.

    The gameplay is good but it doesn't innovate while some mechanic's are welcome and work in paper, reality is they don't or fail to execute entirely like the "jump" or executions.

    Sound is perhaps a good point fpr the game. However none of that is as impactful as the story in which a narrative driven game should exceed. This makes ellie's journey less impactful, because even though Joel's dead was but a cheap devices to justify this all, ellie fails to fulfill it.

    4/10 in my opinion. I didn't enjoy this game as the first one.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All I can say is i’m disappointed. They build up trailers and ads for the game for years, a game people have been waiting on for 7 years. They make you think everything is fine the first hour or so of the game is good you get that Joel and Ellie bond everything is nice and you feel the nostalgia then 2 hours in a random character with no backstory comes in and kills 1 of the main protagonist like it’s nothing. He strolls into a place full of armed strangers and just tells them his name no problem which would never happen considering the character they’ve built for Joel. Then they try to force you to feel bad for his killer and sympathize with her through about 40/50% of the game and then they don’t even give you the satisfaction as Ellie to kill her. Wow. Ellie kills hundreds of people including a pregnant woman and then right at the end she has exactly what she gave up her family with Dina for and then just says “you know what, revenge bad go ahead live your life.” It hurts me even more that she promised Tommy, then makes the journey risking Dina in the process and then doesn’t even fall through with it instead saves her life and let’s her off with no problems. All I can say is wow, the biggest slap in the face i’ve seen from game devs in a long long time.… Expand

    Are all the critics eating **** Is the money just right? 95 points? I don’t even have 55 points. I have more than one hundred PS4 games. This is the first one that makes me produce a strong refund. The game of will, after Joel's death, it is as uncomfortable to play as **** Finally, let's say a screenwriter dead mother, you make a good game invalid. Big SB!

    Such an amazing experience to play this game, buying it was probably the best decision i've made in years, i could even say that playing this solved a lot of my problems irl, including my insomnia of course, just after 5 minutes of playing it i had the best 11 hours of sleep of my life.

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
