I just beat it and honestly feel like this holds a place among the all-time greatest single player. I feel like I was a little luke warm on the narrative to begin with (I had the game spoilt for me prior to release, but turns out so many of the leaks were either BS or totally out of context) but as the game went on I feel like there story just gets more and more compelling. I think some people just need to hate this game. I’ve beaten TLoU1 at least 10 times, it’s one of my all time favourite games, and this game is, to me, vastly better in every respect. Look forward to many more play through sin the future. contectcontext)

The story is truly something I've never experienced in a game, the basic premise isn't new but the way it uses this premise and changes it in a way not often seen in mainstream media especially games. The basic premise is that it's a revenge story and this is nothing new, however what is new is that this game doesn't treat you like a badass for killing these people, it shines a light on the cruelty and negative impact violence has on people and demonstrates perfectly the impact & issues revenge killing ultimately brings. It also helps the gameplay is superior to the first, it's not a major overhaul or anything but just the quality of life improvements (such as the bows improved aiming) and the smoother gameplay (dodging is a huge part of making the gameplay flow a lot better than the first) make a huge difference to the overall experience. To end, both in the story & technical department, The Last of Us Part II is amazing and I would recommend everyone play it for themselves.

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"

"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for" We leave the first part of The Last of Us with that quote, and this masterpiece of a sequel just builds upon that but in a more complex way, and from different perspectives that could have been a hard pill to swallow for some.

In the beginning of part 2, we get to see our beloved characters living a somewhat normal life, with newfound companions and stories that will slowly unfold as the game progresses through meaningful flashbacks. This was a glimpse into the last four years of their lives, a relatively peaceful life that Joel and Ellie have found for themselves. We as the player, step into the story as all of that is about to fall apart. The game does an amazing job of making us feel what the characters are feeling. Sadness, rage, anger, a thirst for revenge. We feel a sense of betrayal as we watch our protagonist get his life beaten out of him, by someone we were playing as just mere minutes ago. We watch him breathe his last breath, through Ellie's eyes, which made it all the more painful and near unbearable to watch. Ellie looks around the room of Joel's killers, we do too. We embark on our journey ready to kill every last one of them.

The story starts off linear, seemingly a revenge story set in this dystopian world we all know and love. We are accompanied by Dina, a level-headed character who deeply cares for and loves Ellie, and who is equally as capable when it comes to combat. The pair get to explore new destinations that are beyond beautiful, despite the destruction the outbreak has caused. The set pieces and locations are a sight to behold, and Naughty Dog has done such an amazing job of making it feel like we are exploring an open world, even though it isn't one. The sets are designed to make you want to explore every corner and every room in order to not miss a single collectible or dialogue that might be a great addition to the narrative. We fight bigger, badder infected that are more rewarding to defeat, and factions that feel more human than AI, and therefore harder to kill than those in the previous installment of the Last of Us. And with every build-up of tense encounters, we are rewarded with the most beautiful, somewhat poignant storytelling of Joel and Ellie's relationship that would almost guarantee some tears to be shed.

As we continue on with our gameplay, it is not until the halfway mark that we realize that this is in fact not a linear story line nor a revenge story—when we once again get to play as Abby. At first we're conflicted. Why am I playing as Joel's cold-hearted killer? How long does this have to go for? What happens in the theater confrontation? I don't want this! Take me back to Ellie! The anger we felt during the prologue rises back up again. I admit, I let her get destroyed by clickers numerous times just to satisfy my anger and frustration. But after a shameful amount of suicide attempts as Abby, I trudged on, eager to find out what kind of story is about to unfold. And boy was I pleasantly surprised.

We get to know the stories behind our prologue "killers", albeit short for some of them, Naughty Dog still manages to give us a glimpse of who these characters are through superb acting and dialogue. I was particularly fond of Manny, who I very much despised during the prologue. I found myself in shock when he gets shot in the head, by Tommy nonetheless, through an epic run-and-duck encounter that's arguably one of the most mind-blowing parts of the game.

As the journey progresses on Abby's side of the story, I found myself fighting the urge to root for her until I finally surrendered. I loved her story arc. I loved her. I loved Lev. I was witnessing the beginning of an amazing companionship, reminiscent to what we experienced with Joel and Ellie during the first part of the Last of Us, without it feeling repetitive. I was in awe, not just with the story but with what it made me feel simply by giving me a new perspective. It was phenomenal.

On the two encounters where the two protagonists get to fight each other, I struggled to let the fight go on. The game makes you feel the consequences of their actions by letting you participate in their combat, it was soul-crushing, and it was intended to be that way. That's what makes this game a solid masterpiece.

The final flashback is the most emotional one yet. Much like the rest of the game, it is all in the details with this final scene. From the crack in Ellie's voice as she says "but I would like to try" and Joel visibly holding back tears, to the emotional and physical distance between these two characters as they talked. It was our beloved Joel and Ellie in their most vulnerable, with a dialogue that perfectly concluded the first game's ending. It was painful yet beautiful, subtle yet impactful. A bittersweet conclusion to an exceptional story, and I expected no less from the Last of Us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to give my 2 cents to the rating here, although I can't add very much new stuff. For me, it is truly a miracle how these good reviews came here. I had a very hard time finishing the game and no, it's not because of the violence, horror and also not because of Joel's death (everybody excepted him to die... but the way it happened was still to soon and illogical ). What Neil Druckman tried, didn't work for me at all. No matter how stupid and evil Ellie got, I was on her team (Loyalty and stuff you know). And in addition to that, Abbys Story had me hate her even more. I saw absolutely nothing nice about her or regrets. In the end I felt I wasted 25h of my life feeling depressed because I waited 7 years and even was looking forward playing the sequel and I really thought: naughty dog never let me down. They can handle Abby in a way I will understand. But no, just ruin everything you liked about the first part and write a story so that it makes you feel you are watching a soap opera. But a cheap one. Really? So many plotholes? Mixing the terms vaccine and cure to one so you don't understand what exactly joel **** up. Still don't believe a cure / vaccine by the fireflys would have been a good thing in this world... Also the map drop, countless surprises that don't develop... they just happen... ah I really don't want to think about it anymore. The other bad reviews make a good job already. The overall story, what it wanted to say in the end is good. Don't get me wrong. But while I was playing I did not understand how the decisions developed. And THIS IS MY BIGGEST PROBLEM. And a lot of people have the same problem. It's just not a smooth transfer from 1 to 2. Expand

From the beautiful graphics, to the excellent acting, the stunning soundtrack and the engaging gameplay. A clever, undoubtedly controversial moment comes with a surprise shift in gameplay some way through the game - but the way it soon wins you round is quite the achievement. And the story - an emotional rollercoaster: violent, brutal, funny, heartbreaking. Just brilliant.

It truly pushes new ground in the line between movies and gaming.

    And that guitar...

If I have one complaint, it's the same one that I had for the first game - the AI is not the best. But you can forgive that.

    An easy 10/10 for me.

An aside: The ridiculousness of people spamming zero stars based on spoilers they'd seen rather than playing the actual game (laughably thousands of these appeared within minutes of release - despite the game taking 25-30+ hours) is incredible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I consider the 1st game one of the greatest ever made, after playing this game for 3 hours so far, i can see it being held in the same regard. The animations, the interactions, the art design and graphic fidelity, despite the 30 fps on ps4 pro, doesn't matter, coming from a high end pc gamer. This game is a masterpiece, i haven't played a game w/ this much detail before. I feel for the crunch the team who designed this must have gone through, but nonetheless, it is a milestone.

With that said, when i heard the game (through leaks and previews) would be focused around lesbian Ellie, and trans Abby - it felt like a let down. Not because I have an issue playing as a lesbian character as a white 40 something male, but because it feels like virtue signaling to shoehorn identity politics in to a video game. This is a bias on my part admittedly, but i can assure you as an open-minded, non partisan person, the games story is handled with grace, nothing is force fed down your throat; the relationship that Ellie has seems authentic and real, tasteful, and honestly her orientation comes up very minimally so far. Also, Abby is not trans, and even though she kills a beloved character, it honestly didn't bother me as once you get to play at her before she kills Joel, you are able to empathize with her character.

The game is great so far. This game, like the last, does feel harrowing at just about all times, and that is due to the investment you have with the characters through the excellent story telling; it make the stakes feel that much higher.

The review bombing is incredibly lame; but i am not surprised due to the enormous divide in this country. Hate on the game all that you want, but i assure you, you will be missing out on a huge achievement in video game play design, art direction and technological sophistication.

Only being a few hours in, I won't give it a 10 quite yet, but suspect it will be deserving of one when finished.

The game is good, actually. I enjoyed the gameplay, which I played 25+ hours of. And I saw all the game from beginning to end, with full context. and as the game is a subjective piece of media, I found myself subjectively enjoying it. 10/10

After all, there are LGBTQ + people everywhere and in a zombie apocalypse we will meet them, but seeing the aspects of the game, the soundtrack is very well worked, the technical and graphic aspect is excellent, the details of the snow, the plants, The landscapes are simply magnificent, it is something that impressed me a lot, the gameplay is not bad, similar to the first one, very entertaining, the new enemies also seem great to me. Now the game falters at a point that I think is more important than the graphical section, and it is the story, since you reach the breaking point and continue playing, playing with the character of Abby and sympathizing with her seems uncomfortable to me, and when you play with ellie it feels like she really isn't ellie if not another character. No character you come to love, nor hate, simply leaves you with a discomfort indifference. Still the game doesn't deserve a bad score. It is good but not what I expected. Expand

Easily one of the best video games I have ever played, this game has resonated and stuck with me weeks after first playing it.

Every aspect of this game is a home run (story, gameplay mechanics, graphics; you name it, this game pushed the limits of what I thought a video game could be), and I can’t recommend the game enough.

To those saying it’s an agenda or pandering, you forget that she was a lesbian in the spin off. AND by having LGBTQI characters is NOT and agenda or pandering especially when there was a connection from the start. The world has changed and if you cannot move forward and accept that YES there is gay people in the world now then I suggest you go hide in a closest, plenty of room for you now all those with “agendas” are out and living their best life and getting the representation we deserve.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2, disappointed me more than any other time in my gaming or movie-viewing life. Naughty Dog took what was a beautiful story, perhaps the best story in video game history in Part I, and absolutely destroyed it in Part II.

Within the first few minutes of part-two’s story, it becomes clear that corporate-pandering-leftism and shallow SJW virtue-signalling were used as its foundation. A stark contrast to the first game's bold, captivating story of transcendent human devotion in a hellish world.

Within minutes of starting part II, it becomes clear that the player is in for a narrative that manages to feel scolding, petulant, pretentious, overweening, fake all at the same time. The word “bigot”, a word all of us are pummeled by elsewhere in media nowadays, makes its appearance immediately and ridiculously. In this post apocalyptic world, wrought with anarchy, murder, poverty, where billions have perished from a horrifying pandemic, and the few individuals remaining are constantly fighting to survive, it's laughably absurd that "bigoted" name-calling would even be a concern.

Then, the previously-ambiguous sexuality of Ellie is proclaimed to be lesbianism, about as subtly as a lead pipe bashing a clicker's skull. Are we in for another powerful, transcendent, inspiring, complex love story? Not quite. Ellie steals the pregnant girlfriend (Dina) of one of the few cis males in the game who isn’t immediately killed off (but is metaphorically castrated and eventually killed off). Their relationship feels sleazy, as they unapologetically cuckolded Jesse, and is as tepid and irrelevant to the story as Dina's character is.

Ellie and Dina smoke a joint and have sex in a dead guy's drug den. Cool.

Throughout the game, we're constantly reminded that Ellie is a lesbian, in a way that feels inauthentic. In a way that feels like they inserted this into the story just to quiet pay-to-complain Buzzfeed game critics and SJW trolls who do anything for a pat on the head. Uninteresting, patronizing, shallow corporate virtue-signalling for money.

Naughty Dog changed Ellie from a warm, capable, feminine teenage girl—who ogled pictures of naked men in Bill’s XXX magazine and had an innocent relationship with a boy in part one—to a cold, hollow stereotype of B-movie girl-power feminism with a lesbian sexuality that we are reminded of constantly. It doesn’t feel at all authentic, it doesn’t jive with her character in previous games (even while taking the Riley story into account) and it feels like a ploy by a virtue-signaling business to make money off of a bummer political climate.

We play games to have fun and to appreciate their artistic elements--not to be *told* what to think and how to feel.

Joel, a redeemed father figure, with a complex, brooding backstory and a heart-warming platonic relationship with Ellie in part one, gets minimal play before he is brutally murdered in part two. Ellie’s part-one version of her character, who we loved so much is removed from the story, while Joel is removed altogether.

Who is our replacement for Joel? Perhaps another positive, masculine, cis male character who exemplifies traditional male virtue as Joel did?

Nope. We get Abby, a horrible individual who seems fake and concocted. We’re told she is female, puzzlingly enough, despite resembling Dolph Ziggler with a ponytail. She has an ambiguous gender at best, and is completely unrealistic at worst. She is an offensive, unapologetic LGBTQ/girl-power caricature, forced into the story. Her arms are even larger than Rhonda Rousey's. The player is forced to play as her, after she does abhorrent things to the characters we love. Thanks.

The cringe in this game is thick. The player is forced to view a graphic sex scene, that plays more like softcore pornography. Beyond being superfluous and an absolute cringe, this is again another sharp departure from the games we loved in the rest of the franchise.

The Last of Us Part I, is my favorite game of all time. I gave it a 10/10. I played it multiple times, including a complete replay on Grounded when I purchased the remastered version recently. The element that set this franchise apart, was its incredible story. Unfortunately, Naughty Dog ruined the story and managed to erase my love for this franchise altogether.

The Last of Us Part II. It is that bad. And frankly, as a software engineer myself, I find it even more disturbing that Naughty Dog treats its software developers poorly. Failing to be at all self-aware, they force all of this self-aggrandizing SJW nonsense upon us, scolding their customer base’s core demographic (cis males), while they treat the very people who did all of the work to make their product like slaves.

I don’t recommend purchasing this game, and I feel unethical for purchasing it myself after learning they treat their development team so exploitatively/disrespectfully.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's the thing, mis amigos: Nobody that has written a review or even gave the game a score would have had the time to properly finish it in the first place. I don't even have the game yet and here I am writing a 10/10 review.
You need to understand that after the leaks a whole bunch of hateful people and trolls went all their way to harass the developers and ruin the game by spreading those leaks with both real and fake information.
I'm not saying the game is perfect 'cause I haven't even played it but I would ask you, reader, to go and see for yourself: Read the professional reviews, go watch some youtuber's gameplay videos, read the story from the wiki or trust your gut and buy it and ask for a refund if you hate it.
You know what's the story about so there's nothing about the tone that you would go blindly into. If the story, gameplay, violence or depictions that presents you aren't your thing, well, skip it.
All I'm saying is that you should give the game a fair chance 'cause for less than 24 hours since it launched, to have more than 5000 reviews it's just simply baffling.
I'll update this review (or delete this one and write a new one) when I get to play the game.
    Have a good day, everyone!

EDIT: After playing the game thoroughly I came with the conclusion that, in fact, it is quite good! The characters are really well-developed and the whole narrative takes a whole bunch of risks that, at least for me, pay off awesomely! And of course, the gameplay, man! The gameplay's so cathartically bloody you can't possibly want to keep up but something pulls you in right back at it.
I can understand why some people would flat-out despise the story, unfortunately, they fall in the majority of really mundane and superficial complaints (Ex. no. 1: Joel being "careless" like, man, it's been 4 years in which they pretty much show how much he went soft trying to reach an understanding with Ellie and his own experiences in a town like Jackson. Ex. no 2: The "woke agenda" like, you look immature by even using those terms, dude... And believe me, there's no "agenda" in this game. Things play out like in the real world and there is not even a single moment that allows you to go "ah! They showcase us, conservatives, as bad people!". Not even that, they're not attacking you).

Is this a perfect game? Probably no. Is the narrative flawless? Not really: There are certain moments that probably weren't too polished (a character death that plays more for cheap shock value midway through the game; the jarring change of pace by playing with a new protagonist midway through the game, as well) but overall I can overlook all of that with what we have here. All I could have wished for was for this game to have been longer than what it is, the extra time would have worked wonders (yes, I'm saying that about this 25-hour long game).

I can understand the hate. I can understand the love. It certainly deserves both: To be loved and hated in this much passion (but hating it doesn't give you rights to be an awful person and send death threats to the developers even if the game was not as "legendary" as you would have hoped for...)

Ironically, about a game about hate and empathy, the story bleeds out into the real world wonderfully.

It's 50/50 man, and I wish for the user reviews to remain like they are right now (at 5.3 overall), because that sums it up: People loving it for the wrong reasons and people hating it for ridiculous reasons. People enjoying it for doing a whole bunch of things right, and people hating it for doing things they didn't hope for.
Give or take. You might love this, you might hate this.
I ended up loving it, even when the game broke my heart in half and spat on it. But it was an experience that definitely moved me like nothing else in the gaming world. Nothing at all.

You may end up saying the story is trash, you may end up saying the story is one of the best narratives out there. For me is the second. The only way for you to find out is to play it. Maybe you'll agree with me, maybe you'll think I'm stupid.
Either way, I got something I wasn't prepared for.
And I loved every last one of those seconds.

So this is a REAL review on this game. English is a second language so it might feel a little clunky.

First of all I just wanna say that the bad reviews on this game have two base types: 1) Troll ones, easy to spot, usually the person says something like "great movie, bad gameplay". 2) Real ones, usually of people mad at the story, this person will say something like "awesome
So this is a REAL review on this game. English is a second language so it might feel a little clunky.

First of all I just wanna say that the bad reviews on this game have two base types:
    1) Troll ones, easy to spot, usually the person says something like "great movie, bad gameplay".
    2) Real ones, usually of people mad at the story, this person will say something like "awesome gameplay, nice graphics, good soundtrack, awful storytelling".

So now for the review, there's a difference between storytelling and story. Storytelling has to do with how the story is told, with which steps the production take to make something believable, good storytelling make a world concise. For example, it would be bad storytelling if Ellie would have found a dwarf in the middle of the game, a dwarf that would tell her how aliens came to Earth thousands of years before Christ and planned that whole zombie thingy. Now, this is bad storytelling, it would make TLOU universe inconsistent, there was no building to this.

    {THIS PART CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS}

Now was there really no building to what happens in this game? You kill hundreds of guys, decide that a cure won't be made just so that you keep the person you love by your side and then you really believe that your actions won't cast a raging spirit? Joel's thing wasn't too rushed, it's many years late in the TLOU universe. From the moment he lost his "first" daughter and escaped with life his death was being postponed. Did you cry, did you feel an indescribable rage through that woman? Did you get yourself lost in the game? Did you feel like you couldn't stop playing until all that was solved? If you did, the storytelling is alright.

People wanted to play TLOU 1 again, a new version of the story of bonding between a parent figure and its child. What they got was the second part of a brute and cruel story.

If you are somewhat mature you will like the game.

People usually play videogames to get away from all the **** everybody keeps bickering about daily in the media. Let games be games and stop forcing feminism and race **** upon us normal people. You don’t NEED a female lead neither does he NEED to be black. Just go with whatever suits the plot. Expand

Probably, probably, this is the best game of the generation so far, but one thing is certain there's no way this game deserves a rate of 0 or 1.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
