Firstly, the game progressively and completely breaks my heart.
Secondly, the Used Game Shop refused to buy my copy of TLOU2. The game play is OK, the story is trasher than trash.

The one point is for the art and programming team. The plot just completely **** on top of the hard work of the rest of the project. Stop trying to beat your idea into players’ head and destroying the plot while you are doing it.

This game simply looks and sounds incredible and as an RPG lover, the first few scenes just make you stop, look around and rejoice at how lucky we are to have games that can look and feel like this.

The playing style picks up pretty much where it left off with the benefit of jumping, swimming and crawling for all characters. The jumping and falling can feel a little clunky if i'm being picky, the swimming works well although perhaps could have been utilised more. The crawling/proning is the best of the new skills and as a stealth type player really enjoyed the benefits and options this added to my playing style.

The scavenging and artifacts are exactly the same, if you're into it, great, if not, you can bypass most of it. I guess there is only so much you can do here, so not too bothered by the lack of development.

I was disappointed with changes made with player and weapon upgrades. The player upgrade system is muddled and frankly becomes a mute point to the game. Your upgrades just don't become noticeable or of any real value, especially compared to the amount of work and exploring it takes to build up enough resources. I felt like could have completed the game on Hard setting without any player upgrades making the whole point of it redundant.

Weapon upgrades again i felt didn't really offer too much given the amount that needs to be scavenged. It was less muddled than player upgrades but felt the new swanky visuals of upgrading your weapons was the best part.....which says a lot.

The situations/ scenarios you find yourself in can be hit and miss. Some I really enjoyed, some seemed under or over developed.  Massive open spaces with literally nothing to do or too regularly were just used and some kind of ambling dialect storyline type section to avoid excessive cut scenes. Then you'd be swept into a sudden stronghold of infected or factions. Then you'd be back to another cut scene or dropped into a completely different character/timeline altogether. It all felt very inconsistent.

So for me the technical side was amazing but the playthrough was too jumbled.

Then there is the storyline. In my opinion, its biggest downfall. I was initially fully engaged with the game, mouth open and slightly traumatised by Joel's sudden departure. It was a shock and awe approach of which I was gutted, but thought they'd bring us back in line with some timeline and character (Ellie & Joel) swapping.  What we got was 3/4 of the game completely detached from the two very players and relationship you fell in love with during part 1.

As much as the game was a spectacle to play for the most part, I just didn't want to be playing it!  The best way I can describe the feeling of sheer disappointment is that I could only have really enjoyed this game if i had never played part 1.

Joel is tossed from the game, cast aside to make way for new characters, his role in the game is literally reduced to cut scenes. Ellie gets very little character development other than a bitter protagonist on a revenge rampage. She still ends up with everyone she loves either being killed or leaving her, which just leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Although you play as Ellie I still felt, like Joel, her best bits all come from cutscenes. Their relationship was just used as toilet paper for the rest of the new adventures. There really is nothing else I can say. They completely messed this dynamic up. It's very sad.

For me, this made any viable buy-in to Abby and her narrative completely tarnished. I was only able to enjoy Abby's storyline in small pockets, ruined by either the jumping around of timelines or by the return of the disappointment I felt at how much they were messing this game up.
Abby's storyline really should have been a DLC and seperate story, much like we got in part 1. You could have engaged with it better, as you'd be prepared to work through it from the other side of the storyline. It was topical, relevant and groundbreaking but ultimately underwhelming because your heart wasn't in it.

Abby and Lev essentially become what Joel and Ellie were in part 1 only with a less stereotyped set up. Personally I think the poor handling of Ellie and Joel completely distracts you from the new storyline and characters.  It should have been something profound but they end up missing that target too. You let Abby get killed, fall off ledges, want her to fail, all because you haven't waited 7 years to play the person who tortured and killed Joel. It just didn't work.

I can't get over how much they let go of the gold dust they created in part 1. It could and should have been so much better.

So my heart wants to bomb the rating as it misses so much. But take away the  emotional attachment from part 1 and it is a stunning looking, dark game with some barrier breaking, brilliant sections.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay mechanics are decent, nothing spectacular. Shooting mechanics are way improved and stealth is awesome. Graphics alone are breathtaking and game changing and ND out did themselves on this one. However, when I buy a story based game it’s because I want the immersive experience of being involved with a story that I can connect with and fall in love with. TLOU part 1 did this and I went in with the belief that part 2 would be the love letter to fans, as a sequel should be. I was wrong and sorely mistaken. The story is contrived and retcons characters that were previously beloved to push a social agenda. TLOU2 kills off Joel within the first couple hours and expects us to sympathize with the killer Abby who is basically a sociopath and full of hate. It tries to tell us that Ellie’s path of destruction created by Joel’s death will only perpetuate more destruction. Whereas the revenge narrative of Abby is justified because Joel killed Abbys dad and Abby is a good person. She’s not. She relishes in other people’s deaths and feels no remorse. . Echo chamber bs, I love video games and love ones that are rich in culture and personality. This is not that. It’s something else entirely... u can’t go 5 minutes with sexuality being forced down your throat. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game deconstructs every positive about the first games story. The story is shallow and in satisfying. It has killed my desire for any sequels. I would have prefered they not made a sequel. TLOU2 would have been much better off telling us a story of a new cast of characters rather than using joel and ellie. The story feels as though it was made and the characters were forced to act it out as opposed to being an organic view of how these characters would react i given a certain conflict. It feels as though this story was made about someone else, somewhere else but they used the same characters to get sales up Expand

Well, what a disaster! If you even like the characters or story in the first game avoid this game at all costs! Consider this "part 2" game a fan-fiction or spinoff. forget this game it's for your own good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to give this game a positive review. When the leaks dropped and everyone was bashing it, I thought to myself, "It's Naughty Dog, they have a great track record. There's no way they messed up that bad". Boy was I wrong.

First off, visually, this game is beautiful. ND really gave it their all to make this world feel alive. Every NPC and dog you kill has a name and they do a great job at making you feel bad for killing these NPCs.

The gameplay gets very old and tedious. It's the same stealth focused, cover shooter from the original game. Some slight refinements, but nothing revolutionary. There were points where I was just sick of going through same room of infected over and over again. I just wanted to get to the next cutscene. The best fight encounters in the entire game for me were where the WLF and the infected were together. I had a blast setting off the Clickers and watching the two groups tear each other apart while I watched with glee. Besides that, the gameplay struggled to keep me entertained.

The story and pacing is where the game falls apart for me. Making us play as Abby for the second half of the game and get all her upgrades completely destroyed the game's pacing. ND spent the first 15 or so hours building up Ellie's story to its climax and and completely ruins it. I understand what ND was trying to do with the narrative, but I believe they could have definitely approached it better. They wanted us to relate with Abby and grow to like her, but made it impossible to do that after watching her beat a beloved character to death at the beginning of the game.

After awhile, I was just hate-playing the game. I had already sunk 18ish hours into the game, so I felt obligated to complete it. It wasn't a joy to play, I got sick of the gameplay loop rather quickly and the story was going a route which I didn't care for. I hope ND does better in their next title.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a lot to be said both about this game and its stakeholders. It is indeed hypocritical for Neil Druckmann to claim that the game is intended to be divisive and yet cry afoul that people are not liking the game.

The game is to be praised for their amazing graphics and stunning environments, much like the previous game. However, the gameplay feels more repetitive and puzzles felt too simplistic. Moreover, much is to be said about the storytelling of the game.

The characters Joel and Tommy were reduced to a shell of their former selves. With almost 50 years of survival experience between themselves, it is uncharacteristic of Joel and Tommy to leave themselves vulnerable to strangers. At the start of the outbreak, Joel and Tommy leave a family with children on the roadside despite having room in their vehicle, showing how extremely cautious they are despite not knowing what's happening. Also, compare this with Joel's encounter with the "injured" Hunter in Pittsburgh, where he correctly assumed that the Hunter was faking his injury in order to ambush them. Living in settlements would not have reduced this caution. Maria almost shot her brother-in-law, despite Joel and Ellie claiming to not be a threat, only to be stopped by Tommy verifying Joel's identity. This plot hole could be seen as lazy storywriting, allowing the player to handwave Joel's reduced caution for plot.

The death of Joel is where the fanbase diverges. One side praises the game's dedication to subvert any expectations, another side laments the use of Joel's death being reduced for simple shock value. Contrast this with the use of Sarah's death in order to paint what kind of father and uncle characters Joel and Tommy are. How they are willing to sacrifice their own lives to protect those that they love.

As you continue from shock and anger from Joel's death, you start to sympathize with Ellie's quest for revenge, sharing her hatred and desire to avenge the death of Joel. The entire Ellie's arc makes you build up bloodlust for Abby's death. When the game tosses you into Abby's arc, now you're confused why you're playing as the "villain" of the story. At some points of the game, you "carelessly" let Abby die to appease that anger. Despite the game continuing to paint Abby in a positive light, the game fails to make me empathize with her character. The entire time I'm playing as her makes me want to go back to Ellie's story. When the game finally reveals that the surgeon killed by Joel was Abby's dad, I could not empathize with him even more. To see that the surgeon was more than willing to sacrifice another person's daughter, especially having a daughter of his own, it shows that if left in that scenario, he would also sacrifice Abby for the "greater good".

I felt that the the game should've ended with Ellie and JJ sitting at the farm, with both sides having lost and no clear winners. However, the third arc of relaunching Ellie's vengeance against Abby felt very unnecessary extension of the game in order to increase its runtime.

How would the game have been better told? I feel that if they started with Abby's arc first. Telling the narrative from Abby's perspective first would have garnered all the player's sympathy for her, especially after establishing that her father is an important character that was brutally murdered by a psychopath (whilst hiding the fact that the psychopath was indeed Joel). They could narrate that the killer's name was "Miller" and, while not revealing that it was Joel, allow the player to kill him without realizing it's Joel (they could make him look even scruffier or more rugged). This sets in the player's mind that they finally gave Abby's dad justice and has avenged his death.

Upon switching the game to Joel's arc, this arc will culminate with in his eventual death. However, the player has come to the realization of the horror that they ended up killing him in the earlier arc. The players justify that there are no good guys or bad guys in this world, they are only each good guys in their own perspective.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't usually write reviews for games, but I feel obligated to set the record straight for a sequel to a game I loved. This game was an absolute pain to get through. The graphics are impressive, but the gameplay is a total slog. The story is where it gets really bad, though. Ellie's section plays out like a teen drama. There're hints of a love triangle and the cliché teen pregnancy to force in some suspense. None of the characters from her half are truly likable but are at least somewhat nice to deal with. At the end of Ellie's half, we cut back to the beginning of the game to play as Abby; which just felt exhausting. The whole Abby playthrough, they tried to force reasons to like her down our throats. Literally everything they did just felt awful and tiring. The first thing Abby does when you're introduced to her is save a zebra. Everything is just so obvious, it's horrible storytelling. All said, this was a terrible game to play through, and I think I hate it so much because of how good it could've been. Expand

Those things alone make me feel bad to express that I didn't like the game. Naughty Dog is an amazing studio and I'm sad they saw such an ugly display.

But it remains; I still didn't like the game. I did somewhat enjoy the first twenty hours - it was a bit tedious but it wasn't terrible. I personally had no gripes with the story choices most of the way in. I was expecting things to pick up.

They didn't... and things took an odd direction; still, I brushed aside the frustration, stayed open to the story-telling choices and reluctantly pushed through. By the end it felt like TLoU:P2 had essentially imploded in on itself. And it felt like a waste of time. The only thing I felt was disappointment.

I read some column pieces from critics and the various perspectives on how it ended. Though none of it changed my mind; I still feel like I played a version of TLoU:P2 from a bad alternate reality. Even after I'd 'taken a few steps back'.

For the most part I'm chalking this down to 2020. Another major title dropped this year and that too left me feeling similar: Final Fantasy 7 Remake - which somehow oddly escaped the wrath of its fans... and instead received near-universal praise.

I do applaud the efforts to represent LGBT characters; that's one thing I am VERY in favour of - and my frustrations are far removed from it. In fact, given the response from fans I hope NaughtyDog turn up the heat in this area next time. Maybe try man-on-man - if it ruffles feathers and takes the time to be engaging, I'm game.

However, with how things are with the storyline thus far I think they should do away with Ellie entirely; for me, things are too trodden in the wrong direction. And I'm wondering if NaughtyDog's "golden era" is coming to an end. I'd rather take a break and get a fresh perspective somewhere else in the same universe after the story of Part 2. After the grim events of this game, who knows; maybe Ellie can become an antagonist? Just be sure to take some "don't do this" notes from The Walking Dead.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have absolutely no issues with the choices around representation. I think it’s a bad game - not that fun to play, repeating similar sequences from the first one to try to boost unearned empathy for Abby. I felt condescended to and scolded for having invested in Joel and Ellie. It sucks - the first game ended on such a beautiful note of ambivalence. This made me want to stop playing games altogether. Regardless of that, it’s clear the reviews were bought and paid for, and the positive Twitter response smells strongly of astroturf. I liked playing some bits - take away all the cinematics and forget it’s meant to be a Last of Us sequel and you have an ok game. But as it is, it stinks of pretension and lack of respect for the audience. Expand

The relationship between Abby and liliy/lev is more like a bastard relationship of joel and ellie meant to make her (abby) more likeable. It fails. The ending is pathetic and illogical. With the consequences being unable to use a guitar anymore. This probably being the only unique aspect of the sequel to the Last of us part one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't like to chime in on these things. I like hearing alternative perspectives to my own. But I do think there are many points to make here. So I couldn't help making them.

Firstly, Abby doesn't show a hint of remorse throughout the game, except for one brief moment that seemed pivotal to the rest of the game. There was no remorse while killing Joel, none while she's talking about the scars, she isn't even willing to entertain the notion that any world view contrary to her own could have its merits - this made her character seem far too unrealistic. I understand the point about the circle of violence, but even while you're in the thick of this circle of violence, a realistic character should, and would, consider at least briefly, that their actions may be going too far. This was the facet that the authors totally failed to explore for Abby. You're left thinking, _why is she even doing this_? I think this is at the core of why the author's are being called lazy writers so frequently.

However, on the flip side, it seems implausible that a character that displays totally sociopathic tendencies throughout the game, would suddenly change the way they behave towards these children after leaving them for dead. Why did her time with Owen cause her to suddenly remember that she'd left the kids to die. They saved her life, but so had Joel! Why was she so nonchalant about killing Joel for so long if he had saved her life too?

There was no exploration of "would my dad want me to kill Joel", "was killing Joel the right thing to do", or anything of the sort. Even when hesitation is displayed by other characters, she wishes she could have been even more brutal. This doesn't fit, and it doesn't make sense!

But my biggest criticism of this game isn't even about the story that was told. On the front of the game, was the title "the last of us", the last game was about a post apocalyptic world where a deadly infection had gripped the world. Ultimately, people loved this game because of the personal relationships that had been formed, despite the peril that the world faced. The greatest parts of the game for me, were the parts where you discovered how the world descended into chaos, through memories left by the old world. It was about trying to see how the world could get itself free from that chaos. We felt betrayed at the end of the last game too, because we wanted the world saved, but we weren't willing to give Ellie up to save it!

This story on the other hand, was a classic revenge tale! This tale could have been told in any world, and I think for most fans, the disappointment stems from "it didn't have to be _THIS_ world"! The world constructed by the authors of the previous game had so many facets that could have been further explored, but instead, we got (what I believe to be) a reasonably generic revenge story.

Sure, both sides had their reasons for revenge, but that misses the point, this game is about the apocalypse caused by a deadly disease. At what point did the disease have any level of salience in this game? Ellie wanting her life to mean something felt like an after thought. The reasons for Ellie and Joel's patchy relationship could have been substituted for literally anything else. The reason Joel killed Abby's dad could have also been substituted for literally anything else, and I could continue to go on here.

I agree that the characters developed here. I agree that the story was fine (I hesitate to call it "good"). But I'm upset because I don't think it belonged in the world of the last of us. Most of the criticisms that the developers are facing essentially stem from that simple fact. This game, and this story had a right to exist, but they should not have existed in the world of the last of us. That is ultimately how I feel about this game.

I appreciate you reading this far if you made it here, writing this just felt like something I needed to do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been playing games for over 30 years and never have I been more disgusted with a game that I anticipated so much. This is a story driven game so the defense that the visuals, sounds, and gameplay are great fall short. Tlou1 was a triumph of amazing storytelling that was thought provocative and intense. Many people have stated that this game revolved around the concept of revenge, and a part of it did. However, the more important aspect was about justice. Ellie and Tommy sought justice on Abby after Joel and Tommy saved Abby from a horde after which she promptly tortures and murders Joel. Let that sink in. She tortured...and murdered...Joel. Yes, Joel killed her father. A clean kill without malevolence. A clean kill in an act of self defense for himself and the surrogate daughter that was never given the option of consent to sacrifice her own life for a cure. Joel's death was very early in the game and was so brutal it was an insta-hate moment for Abby. I was fine with all this. It was still good story building at this point. Good story building that was ruined with the onset of having to play Abby. This not only killed the story, but also made the game way to long. When I realized that I had to play through the same timeline with Abby that I did with Ellie, I was immediately disgusted. I did not care about her or her little band of hate-able misfits. I wanted to see justice for the brutal act placed upon Joel. I did not want to see a redemption arc, because I felt that redemption was impossible and not necessary to the story. It did not take me long to say screw it, put the difficulty to its easiest setting and begin plowing my way through to get the justice I so eagerly sought. I refused to upgrade a single aspect of Abby and was in my glory when I realized I could skip all of Abby's cuts-scenes too, which I did. I had no investment in this poorly developed character and her poorly developed friends. My only satisfaction at this point was that I was slowing killing off Abby's band. In fact a high point was Tommy shooting Manny in the head, because he was the one that spit on Joel's body. My march to justice moved forward until the confrontation scene at the theatre. This is where the festering disgust swelled into pure hatred of the game. Not only was I forced to confront Ellie as Abby, but Abby won the fight. I was robbed of my justice. This torturing, murderous monster was allowed to live. This made the following farmhouse scene (which you are thinking is the end game) tedious. When Ellie realizes she needs closure to heal and move on and therefore goes back onto the hunt for Abby, I allow my resentment to abate. It was here that the story got even worse. When I found Abby on the cross, there were so many options the developer could have given us but did not. I wanted to shoot her, or at the very least leave her there. Instead, I was forced to cut her down and then instigate a fight with her. A fight that I was robbed a second time of the justice I so craved as Ellie lets Abby live. This was utter rubbish and I had to double check to make sure this crappy story was not written my M. Night Shyamalan. This game destroyed everything that made the first one great. I am very confident that I will never purchase another Naughty Dog or Neil Druckman work. I was looking forward to this game so much and it ended up being the most disappointing gaming experience of my life. Sharing these feelings have given me a better perspective. I am changing my score from a 2 to a 1. Expand

There is a big difference between skillful direction and cheap manipulation and unfortunately this falls into the latter. As a standalone this would have just sucked but as a sequel it's laughable. this doesn't even touch on the ending which I'm going to pretend was written by mentaly deficient chimpanzees because my brain won't allow me to believe the possibility that a highly paid adult human writing team could ever produce something so ridiculous. But now we fast forward 5 years later and he's willing to go into a basement with strangers. Why? Because he was living in Jackson and became "soft"? Joel attended routines everyday clearing out infected and you're saying he's gotten soft when it came to people? He became more trusting to them all of a sudden? I don't buy it. I still can't believe that creators of the game legend, one of the most dramatic, beautiful and touching plots in the industry that made us wait for 7 years for the continuation of this masterpiece, the very same people just... KILLED IT. And did it in such a stupid and primitive way. It seems to me they forgot WHAT made TLOU legendary back then- it was the Story of two different people becoming close to each other, creating the relationship lots of fans worshipped. It was Joel's story. The story of a disappointed and cruel bastard who becomes soft because of the little girl. The Love Story. Part 2 literally killed and raped both main characters And Us, games, by making us play for Joel's killer. I didn't wait 7 years to play for some random terminator woman whom I started to despise from the very beginning. The whole gameplay was disappointing, boring and disgusting! As to Dina - I'm not homophobic- I liked Ellie's friend from Left Behind - she was strong, funny and likable character!! Worth of our time and hearts. Where Dina is just... well... superficial. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everyone knows that this game's gameplay, graphics and atmosphere is excellent, even haters couldn't deny that. The story is what has been discussed so much since the release date of TLOU2. Many people harshly criticized its story and tagged it as 'poor and lazy story'. Seeing all these criticize just makes me shocked. A lazy story would be Ellie and Joel travelling the country again, maybe they would have disharmony and they would get seperated from each other then they would forgive themselves and game would be finished. I am sure that if the story were this, everyone would give it 10/10 and call it 'masterpiece and amazing story'. But, ND didn't want to write a cliche story and they killed Joel. Although Joel was one of my favourite character, he should have died and paid what catastrophe he has caused. When he saved Ellie, all of us said that we would have done the same thing in order not to lose our daughter twice but Joel destroyed the only hope and chance of this world by killing the doctor who was able to make the cure. Actually, all the wars between Seraphites and W.L.F or the other deaths are because of Joel and he paid the price with his death. Many people were unable to connect with Abby since they were not emphatizing with her. Abby lost her father, her idol, and she still keeps having nightmares because of that. Also, she can't have a initial relationship with the other people because of her seek of revenge. I claim that all of us would have killed Joel without any hesitation if we had been Abby. And, it is what the story tries to tell us; everyone has their reason to commit some bad things, what we do without empathizing and what we do because of our seek of revenge or comfront is just going to damage yourself. Confront will cause confront and all of us should learn how to forgive someone. Abby killed Joel, then Ellie killed Abby's friends because of her confront, then Abby shot Tommy because of her twinge of revenge and it kept going like that and neither of them got what they were up to. Ellie kept having nightmares because of Joel's death and wanted to take revenge on Abby but when they faced with each other, when she was about to kill Abby, she took the memory of Joel in which he was happy and peaceful, so she understood that forgiving is what would soothe her and it was what she must have done. If she hadn't done that, Lev would have lost her Abby and that would be what Abby had done to Ellie by killing Joel. Ellie had already lost her girlfriend, Tommy, Jesse and her ability to play guitar, the only reminiscent of Joel, so she broke the chain and didn't keep punishing innocent people. Because everyone has their own reasons and own initial relationships to do sth and punishing them will only cause more confront and more damage. This is what Neil Druckmann told us in this story and I would prefer this story all over again to a story that was created only to make fans happy. So, before judging and criticizing this masterpiece story, please think about if you understood what this story tried to tell you and then make a comment about it. This game is a real masterpiece. Get sick of what ND did and doing.
ND does not respect the voice of players.

The details of this game is amazing, but the story and the way ND telling a story sucks.

Ótimos gráficos, ótima jogabilidade e quase sem bugs, história sobre consequências e mostra muito bem que a vingança nunca traz nada de bom para ninguém, e também achei interessante mostrarem os dois lados da história.

This is an epic ... purely the masterpiece of 2020 so far. Didn't rate until I have finished it once and the story is absolutely amazing and has a great plot, purpose, and life learning lessons

This game has astonishing attention to details, graphics is just great. And that's actually that. No more memorable characters we loved from the first part. Motivation of characters is broken. Story is broken. Abby is disgusting and was probably first modeled as a male character. 2/10 just for graphics/audio design.

I genuinely promise I played this game the whole way through and even waited a week to post this... It sucks. No way around it. The gameplay is awesome, but the story is weak. Not because of the leaks everyone saw, but because everything else there, is just bad writing. The characters are not relatable to most, and their personalities are bland. I completely understand representation and support it, but these characters were poorly designed even by that standard. Do yourself a favor and go buy something better. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
