YOU SAID that TLOU2 was about both Joel and Ellie! You also said: "Trust us, we won't fail you, we love these characters more than anyone"... Yeah right, guess what: IT WAS A LIE. The way he dies is just ridiculous and having a character that looks like you spitting on him? **** YOU.
Well, besides that the game deserves all the praise, i'm a great TLOU fan, but if TLOU3 ever exist i won't buy it, Joel's death meant this game is dead to me.

It's a game that takes many bold risks, which I find hard not to admire. Naughty Dog could have easily phoned in a sequel to try and please everyone, yet its decision to take the narrative in an unpredictable direction almost immediately and fully commit to it without compromising is very respectable.

However, the narrative is not without its flaws. My biggest issue with it is the pacing. With a shift in perspective around halfway through, the narrative momentum completely crashes and the game begins to feel very long. By the time the end does come, it feels like it could have been cut short by at least 4 or 5 hours.

I can't find many criticisms for the gameplay, as I feel it improved upon the first game in every way. While the gameplay is pretty much the same, it is more refined and polished. The acting is also fantastic across the board, with Laura Bailey standing out to me as the highlight. It's not easy to take such a controversial role on, but she knocked it out the park.

Overall, this is not as good as the first game - which was more focussed and its message more relatable - but I have to respect this sequel for its sheer audacity for not following what was expected of it. The creators had a story to tell, and they told it. That takes balls.

The game has a lot of silver linings in it: gameplay, atmosphere, graphics, cinematography - that's all on the top level.

Very poor game that tries to use controversy to hide a prominent lack of ideas.
It seems that Naughty Dog was more interested in sending an ideological message than in creating a decent sequel for The last of us. All gameplay has been replaced with political indoctrination.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually get many of the gripes people have with this game. The waaay in your face social justice bonanza with most named characters being either ethnic minorities or gay (the numerous letters you find in the game included)? Absolutely, very on the nose. Neil Druckmann wants to signal his virtue, and he wants to signal it *hard*, and yes, it detracts from the quality of the game which certainly does not need all this to call attention to itself. The soap opera bits aren't to many people's liking either, and I get where they're coming from. And most prominently, people seem to hate one of their favorite video game characters dying quite unceremoniously – not at the end of the game, but in its prologue.

I hated to see him go, too. We were supposed to, obviously. But we were also supposed to get past that and realize why things happened the way they happened, and that this wouldn't have worked with, say, Tommy or some other character we weren't as invested in. This isn't like offing John Connor within the first two minutes of Terminator - Dark Fate, thereby negating all that's been achieved in T2. This is more like offing the main character Ned Stark of Game of Thrones in the first season – because he *needs* to die for the story to be told.

TLOU2's story is very, very much in the same vein as the first game. Customers celebrated the daring move of killing off Sarah at the end of TLOU's prologue, the abruptness, the brutality, the senselessness. We were supposed to get our empathy working and believing that Sarah was most precious to Joel, since she just had a few minutes to grow on us. This time someone dies horribly, just like Sarah did before, but he's precious to *us*. We've spent countless hours with him, of course we don't wanna see him get beaten to death. But even in the first game he wasn't the pivotal character, even though for the majority of it we were supposed to think he was.

Joel's death sends Ellie down a dark path peppered with experiences she'll never recover from. The way the game shows her descent into self-medicating her PTSD by become more and more of a monster and less and less of a person is masterfully done. Everytime when she reaches a pivotal point and has the opprtunity to stop and reflect and make a good decision, she decides to put up the blinders and continue on her path which thereby gets harder and harder to leave. The more she learns, the more she has to ignore those informations and concentrate on embracing her hate until it consumes almost all of her. What that does to that spunky little girl we got to know seven years ago is daring and expertly written, directed and acted out. We feel just a bit like her: We too want vengeance, but where most of us would eventually stop, she presses on and thereby forces us players to press on. At the end, we play a shadow of the person Ellie used to be. Gradually we lose our connection to the main protagonist, until we do *not* want what she wants anymore, and yet we have to enable her to achieve goals that aren't ours anymore, just by playing her.

When the point of view changed and I found myself playing Abby not just in a flashback, when I realized that I would obviously have to play her for as long as I had played Ellie before, I was furious. Sure, I didn't thirst for her blood as much as in the beginning, but I didn't want to start the game over and play her. But within an hour or two I found myself identifying with her as much as I had with Ellie – and further down the road so much more. The way the game achieves this is manipulative, yes, but every game that wants to elicit an emotional response from the player has to manipulate them, and this game knows how to pull out all the stops. Maybe identifying with Ellie and her motivation we're all very familiar with – avenging a loved one is the plot of countless movies and games, after all – made many players see the code instead of the Matrix, maybe that's what made them notice all the tricks the game used to make the player identify with Abby, and feeling manipulated, they took on a repudiating stance towards her? But if you keep an open mind and accept that the game presents you with an "antagonist" who's morally much more wholesome and human than the protagonist you enjoyed playing before, you get Ellie's "what if" mirror image. Abby makes Ellie's downward spiral so much more heartbreaking because what Ellie keeps throwing away, bit by bit, until there's almost nothing left, is what Abby has kept: the last of us. Humanity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics and animations are what everybody has grown to expect from Naughty Dog - amazing. Too bad everything else is miles behind of what Naughty Dog can do. Gameplay has little to no innovation. Meaning if you replayed the 1st part to get ready for second, everything will feel familiar but that means you will grow bored that much quicker. Only 1 new type of infected (not counting the boss fight) so nothing to look forward to in the fight sections. Copy pasted human boss fight from Uncharted 4 gives away Naughty Dog's lazyness with the sequel. But i guess all of that could be forgiven in a narrative driven game....if the narrative wasn't insulting to player's inteligence. Story is absolutely terrible just as the pacing and constant jumping between timelines and flashbacks. Just as you are starting to get ''into it'' you are quickly pulled out with a flashback or a walking sequence. Not to mention the deceitful marketting. Definitely not trusting Naughty Dog again with a preorder. Can't give the game more than a 5 for beutifull graphics and detailed animations. Expand

The story was very emotional and impactful. Most of it is tragic, and that should be a warning to anyone who wants to play. This is very dark and happy moments are rare. My only problem I had was the disjointed order. I think they could have presented the plot in a more meaningful and linear way, but that isn't what you'll get. It's fine the way it is, but it could have been better. The entire plot is still quite an experience and one of the best I've gone through since God of War.

A lot of the accessibility options in this game are amazing. I used some of them and I'm sure many people saw benefit from what you can do.

Overall I think this game reached the legacy of the first game at the very least. A lot of people might dislike the events of the story, but to give the game a zero because it made you mad is childish. This game is above any average Ubisoft or Activision game. It is quite literally one of the best games of this generation.

Let no one tell you otherwise. It is the intention of the game to make you feel deeply uncomfortable and unsettled in changing perspectives. Even it’s seemingly unending nature is by emotional design. This games dives deep and takes you on a journey that is so important in this day and age - the journey of ambiguous choices. There’s no clear good guy. No clear bad guy. Just like in real life this games acts like a mirror...and it pisses people off. But the journey, the story, the cinematic experience are the best videogames has to offer to date. If there were an Oscar for games, this one would bring home every category. It’s that good. Period.

I love how almost every door is openable, i love how in certain sections of the game its explorable, also i love how you can see destintion out in the distance and you slowly making your way towards it thru the ruined city. That is awesome. Very very beautifuelly build world and enviorment, they developers completly made great job for the detail of the envoiroment, and made it alot of fun looking for goodies and checking every cornor for upgrades .

    3) gameplay. 9.5/10 its really enjoyable to find your own path, and a way you want to tackle enemies. Stealth thru, use traps, silently kill them with pistol and bow or sneak up murder, throw bottle to attract zombies to attack other humans or outright gun blazing. The combat is alot of fun AI is smarter than in most games like this. They hear you, smell you, try to go around you, slowly advance on you from cover to cover. Try to out number you. Do you flee, fight, or sneak thru. Either way what ever you choose it will leave you wanting more.

Overall i think length of game was good, interesting to see different parts of the city, which was beautifuelly made. The story was also done in awesome interesting way and i see what deveoplers had went for and i understand it as a whole. I say give it a shot the game is well made.

From a gameplay perspective, it is definitely an improvement over the first one, graphically it is probably the best looking game I have ever seen.

From a story perspective, although I would have preferred certain fates were handled better, the journey is definitely one that is worth travelling. The leaks definitely misrepresented the plot. It is a gritty story, it does not pull any punches. You will feel very uncomfortable handling certain moments, which I guess is the intention of the director. Nevertheless, I feel like the story does have some pay-off in the end, or at least it leaves it up to a more positive interpretation.

Now, do I believe it is perfect? I wouldn't say so. The Last of Us Part 1 is a focused story around the relationship of these two characters, while Part 2 feels more like a story about the world itself. It attempts to provide a plethora of different perspectives, so that all become, to an extent, sympathetic. However, by having such a broad scale, it does not feel as focused as certain players would appreciate. If I were to contrast the two games, Part 1 feels more like a movie while Part 2 feels more like one, or even two seasons of a show, in regards to scale. It worked for me, but I do admit it felt somewhat long at a certain point, as the last few hours felt dragged on.

Nevertheless, I loved the experience. You can feel the passion behind every single member of the staff, from the animators to the actors that worked on this game. It is NOT an half-assed game.
There were some great emotional moments that I feel will resonate with many players. I felt had my money's worth, but I can understand that the story is not for everyone. Congratulations for the great game, Naughty Dog ;)

I absolutely LOVE the 1st game, but The Last of Us Part 2 is a huge let down.

To be fair, The Last of Us is such an iconic and beloved game that's very tough to follow up with a good sequel, let alone one that surpasses the original. Just like the Matrix sequels couldn't really match the 1st movie. The Last of Us Part 2 is objectively a better game in technical terms. It's got better

It's got better graphics, better motion and performance capture, bigger environments, better AI, more refined gameplay (at last, a dodge button). In other words, it's got great production values. Yet it fails miserably where it matters the most: the game experience, and the lasting impression it leaves on players.

First of all, let me address the big elephant in the room. The game has caused controversy online due to seemingly promoting a progressive political agenda. Yes, the game portrays some LGBT characters alongside straight people, but their presence is not an issue. The game's real issues are far more fundamental. But dare I say, I've had enough of this agenda, especially when it's not applied so "innocently". If Neil Druckmann includes LGBT characters in his game because the story demands it, fine by me, but please don't take advantage of LGBTs so you can call yourself a "progressivist" and potentially open Hollywood's door later on. We know how things work.

The original game had a simple yet powerful story punctuated with memorable characters and events. The sequel is a shallow tale about hate and the cycle of revenge, with no memorable characters. I won't spoil the game's plot, but let's say the game's narrative focuses on a dozen characters, and as a result loses all of its focus. By the game's end, I had little to no impression left on me.

Another thing that hampers the game experience, is the non-diverse gameplay and the game's length. You traverse the environment, explore an area, and either you loot everything you can or have to dispatch an enemy team, and repeat for 30 hours or so. Puzzles don't exist. There is no trail-stealthily-someone mission. There are no time-limited events. There is no hunt-an-animal-for-food mission. There are no mini-games. There are no secondary dialogue trees to actively pursue, only those you can trigger with the triangle button. Even the fact you can play the guitar is under-utilized. They introduced a few new monsters to the infected roster, and only the Stalkers are a great addition, they gave me a few good jump scares. But at some point there is a horrible boss fight with a creature that reminded me of some recent appalling Resident Evil games.

I understand that Naughty Dog wanted to try something different with The Last of Us Part 2, but frankly they didn't deliver a good experience. It can happen even to one of the world's best games development studios which has released multiple great games in a row. Last time they released a game with a lacklustre experience was Jak II on PS2, or the 1st Uncharted on PS3. I'm sure Naughty Dog will re-organize themselves and their next game will be a return to form. But The Last of Us Part 2 should have been much better than it is.

The third act of the game was rushed, it felt like a DLC they decided to slap on there as a "BUT WAIT THAT'S NOT THE END". The pacing was bad, it went too fast, and by the end, you didn't really care about anyone. it's like when you get a fantastic director and cinematographer to film an absolutely horrible script. It's beautiful, but won't get you back to watch again.

Overall it was very disappointing. The engine and gameplay is a marvel to behold, the story is contrived, has unnecessary filler shoved in to either extend gameplay or to provide opportunities to have us like characters more, but it just failed at providing any compelling story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is nowhere near deserving of anything above a 5. I’ve chosen 3 but would more aptly have chosen 3.5 and this is for 2 reasons:
The game is a technical marvel and Naughty Dog’s artists and engine engineers deserve a lot of credit - the game is stunning, one of the best this generation. The game also includes flashbacks between Joel and Ellie and these really flesh out and build upon the relationship of the two living there life in Jackson. It’s heartwarming and really beautiful and if any characters had anything resembling this level in Part 2, the game would’ve been at least a 7.
    Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
This review is mainly focused on the characters and story, as gameplay remains largely unchanged from the first game. This is subjective but I enjoyed the stealth, the flanking, the survival tactics and the collectibles. I think aiming before shooting grounds the game and gives a sense of realism - these are just poeple trying to survive with guns, not trained soldiers. If you enjoyed the first game’s gameplay or the multiplayer, the gameplay here feels no different.
Essentially, the games major flaw is there is no realism or emotion between any of the characters in this game. The player takes control of Ellie, on a mission looking for Joel, who goes missing. She finds Abby, the daughter of the surgeon Joel kills at the end of Part 1, beating his head in with a golf club. The game then rewinds and now we’re playing as Abby. This is such a gut punch and lurch of coherence and fluidity, and the rest of the story becomes an utter mess of choppiness, flashbacks and jumpcuts that make it really messy and hard to follow. Abby herself is really unlikeable and is hard to sympathize with. All of her allies we meet in the space of 10 minutes and maybe have another 20ish minutes of cutscenes with them in which the player has no time to connect with them, until Ellie murders them. Ellie’s friends suffer a similar fate at the hands of Abby, except Tommy (Joel’s brother) and Dina (Ellie’s girlfriend.
Ellie herself is also extremely unlikeable, having become bitter about Joel not sacrificing her in the first game to create a vaccine (Ellie has the game’s fungus on her brain which turns most people into zombie-like creatures but Ellie has an immune strain that would create a vaccine but she would die having it removed). The issue is, it’s played out like... It’s not even played out like an edgy teenager who’s dad will never understand her. Ellie, 19 or 20, is played like a 12 year old who didn’t get this years new phone. It’s bratty, childish and not at all the independent, strong and witty Ellie we knew from Pt 1. There’s also a strong “we hate all men” vibe from a lot of characters that is strange and uncomfortable.
I would like to make a small mention of Dina though, she’s the only other character apart from Ellie and Abby that is somewhat memorable. Her and Ellie’s interactions are usually very cute and touching and go someway to humanizing them both. I ESPECIALLY enjoyed the farmhouse scene, where, after a battle with Abby, the game cuts (as it usually does) a few months ahead and Ellie and Dina are living in an abandoned farmhouse that they’ve repaired and they are living with Dina’s baby son and rearing animals. It’s possibly the best scene and area in the game. It all comes crashing down when Tommy comes around, tells Ellie he knows where Abby is, Dina quite rightly says to Ellie not to go or she and the baby will leave but Ellie goes anyway, which is really stupid and none-sensical. Had the game ended on the farmhouse it would’ve been leagues better.
So Ellie finds Abby, who had been kidnapped and beaten almost to death and then crucified by some slavers and Ellie cuts her free. They then head to a nearby dock to escape by boat. Before they can, Ellie sees Lev, a young boy Abby had been travelling with, laying in the boat and Ellie threatens to kill him unless they fight. With their fists. In a survival of the fittest, underhand tactics, we have guns world. It then becomes a quick time event, where Ellie gets the upperhand, has a PTSD flashback of Joel, lets Abby leave and walks away. Cut to the farmhouse, Dina and the baby are gone, Ellie picks up a guitar and tries to play but can’t because she lost some fingers in the Abby fight, cut to flashback of Ellie teling Joel he should’ve let her die in the hospital, cut back to Ellie walking away from the farmhouse, ends.
Let’s all hope TLOU3 is never made or if it is with Druckmann and the current management who made ND work 100’s of hours far FAR away. Until then, ND staff at the bottom, get out and never look back.

The game mechanics also get repetitive and boring after the 300th kill. There were characters that I really liked even though they were "enemies". The story did not develop like I would have wanted it to, but that made it even more interesting. It's not a "nice" story with a happy end on a white horse.

The graphics is just gorgeous and very detailed. You find a lot details just for a single scene, or something you just stumple upon details that most players will miss. It makes the world believable. There are some flaws with enemy encounters, though, like some encounters where you think no way a real human would survive this, but hey, it's a game. The levels are very linear, sometimes very noticeable, sometime not, most of the time it's just fine and I didn't mind much. Overall the sneaking/killing works very well and can be quite nerve wrecking (in a good sense).

I do understand it's a polarizing game, for various reasons. You might not like some characters or the way the story develops, but it is in my opinion a good/well-told story (even though it's a cliche revenge story). Most main and secondary characters are neither black or white, they have likeable traits and dislikable flaws. It made me care for characters, hate others, think about them and their situations, I liked a lot of things in the story (and side stories) and there's few for me to complain about. The game really made me forget my surrounding and sucked me in at times, which is all I want of a game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game in about 30 hours and overall I enjoyed it, but I can also understand the criticism the game is receiving from a large group of gamers, and even agree with some points. So here it goes:

    - Is this game better than the first one? No, it is not, this game lacks some key elements of the first one, like the journey across multiple cities or the "us against the world" feeling so present in TLOU.

    - Is this the game a masterpiece? Graphically speaking, yes it is, it looks amazing. The performance of the voice actor and actresses is top notch and very convincing, really a 10 out of 10. But it's not perfect enough to be called a masterpiece. There's too much repetition combat wise, for example.

    - Is the story good? That's a tough one, yes and no, but the only way I found to answer that is by saying: its a good story for this game alone, but as a story worthy of a sequel to the first game? No. Like I said before, it's not the same feeling as it lacks key elements of the first game.

    - Is there wokeness in the game? Yes, and I most definitely don't like politics and social activism in games, because it tends to ruin them, but it's not a big issue in TLOU2. It didn't bother me in this case.

    - Was Joel's death really necessary to the sequel? Not in my opinion, there was other possibilities, it did work for the story, but still didn't like this creative choice from Naughty Dog. This was very disappointing.

Well, I do think people should play this game, but I would wait for some PSN sale in the future.

I seriously don't know why this game gets so much hate...
And yeah, I'm a gamer. Just this year alone I've played 3-4 of my all time favorite games. Persona 5 Royel, Final Fantasy 7 (Remake) and The Last of Us 2. I played the first one at release, waited 7 years on it. And it was worth it.

This game left a bad taste in my mouth. First the trailer's lied to everyone swapping character models to make it look like one of the last of us beloved character's would be on a revenge adventure with ellie but that was a lie. This Secret character kills the beloved character a 1 and half in the game and then they think you will like to play as this character for 10 hours. Plus it seems like ND game this new character more love then Ellie's story half. the new character gets better map designs and better weapons and made this character more friendly trying to make the player like her. They gave her alot of pretty cool boss fights while ellie just get stealth encounter's. plus they up the looting in this game i felt like i been doing more looting then encounter's in this game. such a time consuming process. Welp! Writing anything about this game seems extreme. Well, nobody asked me, but here is my take: The Last of Us Part II is a game that probably should have not been made, but we got it anyway, not because the first onw couldn't be topped or improved, or because there wasn't any story to tell, and not even because of the expectations of the fans. We've seen other games with similar circumstances knock it out of the park. At least to me the problem with TLOU Part II is that it seems that it was made without even knowing why. Oh well, first the positives: Graphically, the game is incredible even on an old PS4. The music while a little derivative from the original is also excellent. The voice acting again is absolute superb, and while the combat and puzzles are very much more of the same, they're still well put together and effective. Even the story (as much maligned as it has been) has some very solid and powerful moments, and finally kudos to Naughty Dog for the accessibility innovations, I have to say I'm really impressed.
Now, the bad is quite simply one thing: The story execution and planning. It really seems that the creative team really wasn't sure what to do with the game, because even if you don't like the ideas put into the story, it can still be structured and told effectively. But here? That is where the game really punts it.
All in all, the production still makes this a solid, even good game. But a lot of money, crunching, and good production staff can only take you so far. I really hope this time, this game really will be the last of it.

This is a bold game, and requires the player to stop and think. Many times. The story they chose to tell was destined to upset and dissapoint, but that is part of why I love this game, it forces you to realize that there is more to everything than what you first realize. A simple lesson but one that still is important. Life is not fair, in real life, people you love and treasure can be taken from you in the blink of an eye. Nothing is for granted. Real life can be cruel and unfair, just like it is in TLOU2. I like to think naughty dog expected the players to make the same Journey as Ellie, and cope with their grief as she did. But alot of people just wanted to kill Abby. If that was a choice, the game would have had less meaning and less food for thought, you could say the same for the ending we got but thats how views are different. An eye for an eye would leave the world blind. Expand

Sad just sad. This is what we have been waiting for? Some of the worst storytelling in such a good franchise I have ever seen.

None of the characters were interesting.

You're better off sticking to ither games like Doom Eternal or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Hell, I'm more blown away by what Xenoblade Chronicles was able to accomplish on the Switch remastered.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. why do companies keep killing their own franchises by showing their SJW agenda down your throat.
Story is bad ,as bad as it can be and its really slow paced it tries too hard to make you care about all the new shallow characters . Killing the already well established character just to introduce this roid monkey all for SJW sake was a low blow to any tlou fan.
No amount of graphics or art style which isn't anything special in tlou2 and gameplay which is mediocre it hardly improved from previous one, will make up for this boring slog through this game.
A score of 95 really shows you the incompetence of "critics" who are just too afraid to speak the truth about the game or they are simply paid off by Sony and ND.

It's a good game over all but the story and pacing has issues, it feels like the game could have been about 5-10 hours shorter and it would probably have been a lot more fun. El juego se podrá ver increíble y seguramente sea este el mejor juego de play station en aspectos gráficos y de gameplay. No obstante su historia es un asco, sus personajes son detestables y por último nadie me va a obligar a pensar como ellos quieren.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
