This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Visually it’s a stunning game, but lacks a little emotional engagement. I haven’t connected so far with the characters I’ve met or played, yet I’m almost 25 hours in. Because of the limited resources, you’re forced to scour every area to stock up for the next inevitable battle and that takes some time. This is quite laborious due to the fact some of the locations are quite disorienting and you can end up going round in circles. It’s because of this I’m now powering through and hoping I don’t have much left to do, so I can re-sell it and still make some decent money. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To start off my review for this game I would like to say I thoroughly enjoyed and loved the first game and played it multiple times.

The Last of Us Part 2 has been one of those games I have been waiting for since Naughty Dog first announced it. That was when some spoilers got leaked and people started to hate on the game, I was one of the people who didn't actually look at any spoilers and did my best to avoid anything relating to those spoilers.

Since the game came out the game has had nothing but praise on one side while hate on the other.

I have just completed the game and my god i really enjoyed the game and liked the characters. I was originally going to give the game a 9/10, but I have had time to think about the game, story the gameplay, the mechanics, the character development, the deaths and most importantly the story.

The game as a whole is no where near as bad as what people are making it out to be, especially on the story side of it. Originally i really hated Abby but once i started playing as her I began to like and understand why she did what she did.

People need to remember Joel wasn't a good guy and I really like Joel, but with all the people he killed it was bound to catch up to him at some point.

By the time i got to the end of the game I was at the edge of my chair simply because the two characters I grew to like in this game were facing off and one minute I was hating Ellie, the next I felt sorry for her.

That is the point of the story though, it isn't meant to be the same sort of thing that we are used to where we can predict whats going to happen where the writers do their best to please the fans. Naughty Dog did what they wanted to do and told the story they wanted. We as the audience have to play the game and experience what is being told to us. Due to how it is different to other games it seems that people don't like it.

I do understand that it isn't a game for everyone.

For me though I personally loved it from start to finish.

Now onto some the Positives and Negative.

    Positives
    - The game mechanics are some of the best I have seen in gaming
    - The character development is spot on
    - When playing you feel apart of the world
    - It is quite sad in a good way of course which at me in tears at different moments
    - It was tense
    - Had some good scares
    - The skill system as been improved massively compared to the first
    - The graphics OH MY GOD IT IS EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL
    - The story was tense, beautiful, different and emotional.
    - The voice acting and performances are some of the best I have ever seen in gaming

    Negatives
    - Certain very small sections dragged on longer than needed
    - I came across some glitches, which didn't brake the game but did take me out of the moment for a few seconds.
    - small sections also needed more to it.

    OVERALL
I personally really enjoyed the game, the story and the work Naughty Dog put into this.

My advice for anyone who is thinking of playing this game is to go into it open minded and to play the game Naughty Dog want you to play/experience.

If you are unsure on whether you'll like it my advice is to watch some gameplay, wait for it to go down in price or even borrow it from a friend.

Looks great and has fun game play moments. Sooo disappointed with the story. Too many moments where I was frustrated with the lack of player agency due to what they would force the characters to do. Lets be real, there were choices that some characters made that they just wouldn’t... “How convenient” I kept saying to myself.

Thanks for taking a **** on Joel.. And thanks for turning Ellie

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Played both. Didn't read spoilers. Wasn't sure I was gonna love 2 as much as 1. Thought a basic revenge story would be boring. People on the internet are skimming through this game as if it were a reading assignment due the next day (it shows). The game tells a complex tale of coping with grief, challenging you to objectively humanize the enemy, and themes of evolving identity analogous to the first game. Along with a ton more that I know I missed on my first playthrough. If you are on the fence about playing this game stop reading reviews, stop watching content, just find a way to play the game yourself. The experience is powerful if you just allow yourself to experience it organically. Or... Continue to spread negativity and gain nothing but contempt from others I.e. post comments about a game you truly never attempted to care about in a futile attempt to get revenge for a plotline that you disagree with. The game won't change and you being mad about it does nothing about it sales figures 4 million copies in 3 days. Learn to move on. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved this game and I think all the hate from it stems from the fact that people were unable to approach this game with an open mind and they shut down once Joel died. Joel was not a great man, he's done a lot of **** up **** in the first game (torture in the Winter chapter, saving Ellie and essentially dooming humanity) and before the first game (he said he was a Hunter at one point).

The game looks and plays incredibly well, but I want to use this to talk about the story, which it seems most people have an issue with.

Killing Joel is a great way to kick off the story and get Ellie moving. It made me mad when Joel died and, like Ellie, I was ready to go and get some revenge. I found that Dina made for a good partner, she balances Ellie's recklessness well and provides caring and contrast to Ellie's sheer determination and bloodthirsty focus. Alternately, Jessie shared Ellie's desire for revenge and willing to kill, but unlike Ellie, he has clear lines on how far he is willing to go and doesn't hesitate to separate himself from her when he feels she's going too far. When I was playing as Ellie, I felt determined to go hunt the WLF and murder Abby.

So, when the gameplay switched and I started playing as Abby at the zoo, I felt a little hesitant, but also curious. Upon learning WHY she went to kill Joel, I felt a much deeper understanding of her. When I saw the time turn back to Seattle Day 1 as Abby and I realized I was going to have to do three days as Abby, I'll admit, I felt like the momentum of the story had been utterly halted, and I was a little upset to have to (in a sense) "restart". However, I put the feelings aside, kept an open mind, and started to work my way through it. I very quickly started to see what Naughty Dog was doing, which is something they didn't do in Part 1. They were humanizing all sides of the story: Ellie, Abby, the WLF, and the Seraphites. In Part 1, you had horse blinders on and were focused just on Ellie and Joel and what Ellie and Joel were doing and how Ellie and Joel felt, which is fine, but what they did in Part 2 made for a very interesting experience. I came to enjoy playing as Abby and when I came back to the aquarium on Day 3 and saw Owen dead on the floor, I was ready to kill Ellie. The fight between the two of them was intense for me and I wanted Ellie to die, but also wanted Abby to die. Regardless of what would have happened, I felt like it was going to be justified.

When time skipped ahead and saw Ellie with Dina on their farmhouse, it filled me with a sense of joy that Ellie finally had a calm life. However, when she had her panic attack in the barn, that was the part of the game that made me cry (the game had previously made me very emotional and teary-eyed, but no tears falling). I felt so bad for her that despite her seemingly peaceful life, she was filled with so much conflict still. When she packs her bag and leaves Dina and I saw that there was STILL more to the game, I felt a massive sense of dread and a desire for it to just end. I had grown attached to both characters and I didn't want either of them to get hurt. It felt like being on a rollercoaster that stops and starts to slowly roll backward, which was a feeling that I don't think a video game has given me before.

I loved playing in Santa Barbara, that sort of dry environment hadn't been shown in either Part 1 or Part 2, and it looked beautiful. By the time Ellie reaches Abby, both of them are beaten to hell and back and when Ellie fights Abby, it feels like she's doing it not because she still wants to, but there's a part of her that feels like she has to. She looks exhausted. She stops because she has that flashback of Joel, her last conversation with him, where she says she doesn't know if she'll be able to forgive him, but she'd like to try. I think part of her desire to kill Abby stems from the fact that she never got to forgive Joel, and if she can't forgive Joel, maybe she can forgive Abby. When she returns home, she finds her home empty, Dana and JJ are gone, no note. She finds her guitar and tries to play it, but cannot, due to her lack of fingers.

The reason I give this a 9 and not a 10 is because a part of me wishes the game would have ended here (or after she sets down the guitar and walks out of the room after a few moments of stillness) and the flashback would have come while she was fighting Abby instead of after she plays guitar. Maybe that would have been too direct though. I just love the face she makes when she stops playing guitar. She realizes that in her pursuit to get justice, Jessie died, Tommy has a limp and lost an eye, Dana and JJ left her, and now she can't even play guitar, her last tie to Joel. She makes a face that is rich with realizing that she lost more than she gained and wonders if it was worth it in the first place.

This game destroyed everything I loved about the first game. It is filled with characters that the game force you to immediately adore. It is a dark game with no light in it. It is just another empty revenge story. It doesn't bring anything new to the table. Kinda like new Star Wars trilogy . Very dissapointing after 7 years of wait.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many of the still negative reviews are based on people who have barely played the game, or barely understood the deeper meanings of the game. Its definitely divisive and not for everyone, but sometimes for the wrong reasons. That said, I'm gonna get right into it. Joel Miller. He lost his daughter Sarah right at the start of the outbreak, and got separated from his brother Tommy. This would be Joel's entire world coming crashing down on him. For 20 years, he dealt in the Black Market, killed a lot of people and infected to survive. Probably done worse. Then he meets Tess. Tess probably would've been able to make Joel feel some degree of normalcy again. Maybe he would've had another kid. But Tess got bit and she passed, shortly after Joel met our favorite snarky and bratty teen, Ellie. They hated each other at first, man. Ellie would never listen to him, and she had such a mouth! It was hilarious at times. Joel got sick and was injured on top of it. Ellie had to go find medicine for him. After a while Joel started to get attached to her like she was his own daughter. Maybe he was finally able to move on from Sarah's death. Now we fast forward, and The Fireflies have realized how they can develop a vaccine (This is already point #1 and 2. A lot of it has to do with Spores, which is in the *air*, like a regular virus or infection.) using Ellie's mutated cordyceps growth. The only catch, is they'd have to kill her to remove it. Joel hears this and he is definitely not having it. This girl just made Joel start to be human again. Slowly getting rid of that hardened survivor exterior. He has a little girl to love again. He won't let anyone take that away from him, and even if it meant only being able to spend more time with her, he doesn't care about keeping the truth from her. Its a horrible, terrible, selfish act of love that anyone normal would find trouble parsing the morality of. This is what The Last of Us and Part II are all about. Not the black, and not the white. The GREY. Joel kills Dr. Jerry Anderson, Abby's father. He didn't have to. He could have knocked him out, maybe shot him in the legs. But he wasn't taking the chance of being chased. Joel even then kills Marlene, essentially Ellie's caretaker/surrogate mother. Joel tells Ellie her immunity had no purpose, that it meant nothing, because there are other immune people. Dozens, he says. This is another lie, of course. I love Joel, but that was all messed up. Fast forward to Joel and Ellie settling down in their new life in Jackson, Wyoming. Tommy and Joel specifically have fought barely any infected the past nearly 5 years, never mind people, sometimes only running into 1 or 2, or not even any at all. Imagine how much more relaxing their life is. Jackson has a welcoming policy when it comes to stragglers/strangers, and allowing them in the city. Thats why Joel saves Abby without a second thought and trusts her. Even going through Joel's house, HIS HOME, you can see how he has changed. He plays guitar on his porch at night, enjoying the peace. He woodcarves. He has a little picture of himself that Ellie drew for him. And its FRAMED! Joel got his life back, man! So before judging Joel's character simply because he "lets his guard down"....think of how his humanity has returned to him...! Joel over these years slowly got rid of the "everyone is an enemy" survivor mentality. This game is NOT a revenge story! Its ALSO a story about love, empathy, forgiveness and redemption. The reason we don't play as Abby first, or see her story first, is to show us a preview of what Ellie could and does become, going down the same path that Abby did. Showing us the cost and what it takes, what you lose in a quest for revenge. Ellie's journey sparked from her love for Joel, and Abby's for her love for her dad. There are so many layers to this story overall (part 1 and part 2 both) that its nearly impossible to address it all. Whether you enjoy this story hinges on whether you can understand Joel's death and Abby and move past protagonist bias, which is why its so important to address it. Abby's side of the story is about how her revenge has affected her, and what she finds to forgive herself and redeem herself, in caring for and protecting Lev and (to a tragic extent) Yara. At the end, Abby carries Lev away...just like Joel carried Ellie away. Ellie sees this and realizes what SHE has also lost. After fighting Abby she remembers her last night with Joel, and how she never got the chance to FORGIVE HIM, and can't forgive *herself*. Ellie might have never been able to forgive Joel. But she was willing to try. Abby might never forgive Ellie for Owen, Mel, and her other friends, but she was willing to try. Sparing her THREE TIMES! There's so much. It might be a bit messy, but I hope this gets the points across. Maybe this was more critical than I expected! Open your mind! Because I don't think any game should get a perfect 10, The Last of Us Part II gets a 9/10 from me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Phenomenal sequel. I went into this game with quite a bit of worry due to the abundance of negative reviews regarding the narrative choices. One of the major gripes being a particular scene involving a golf club. That scene set up the character Abby. That scene made me despise her and want nothing more than to hunt her down in as Ellie in an epic revenge story.

The story ended up making me love and understand Abby as a character and completely understand and sympathize with her motives. It made me realize the impact of Joel's actions in the first game, and that the impact of those actions were felt on more than just faceless NPC's.

    Don't ignore this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is one of the best in the last 60 years. Its gameplay is solid and definitely fun! When carrying each gun you can really sense their weight. The in-game graphic is breathtaking, from lightening to objects' textures to NPC meshes. The cutscenes are a jaw-drop thanks to the meticulous and deep work the animators put in the facial expressions.
Sound design and music are really well balanced and timed throughout the entire gameplay. They drop you into the environment as if you were living every MC's breaths.
And now the crucial point: the Story. The nonlinear narrative is so well done that I think it's the strength of this game. Two parallel stories told one after the other to challenge the player. They wanted us to wear the shoes of 'the bad guy'. But we quickly realize that there's no hero, there's no villain, there are just people surviving a world that has lost rules and civilization. Everyone fights its own battle for their own sake. Joel's death wasn't epic. Ellie's desire for revenge wasn't fulfilled. And that's the best they could do! Death isn't epic. There's no glorious (Marvel like) death here, there is just a cold butchered body. Even if I loved Joel in TLoU and I'd have loved to play him more.
But I don't buy videogames to play my story. I can live my story in my dreams. When I buy a game I want it to surprise me, to encourage me to see things from different points of view. Otherwise, I will always be blind.

The story feels disjointed and unlike the first game which held a linear and simple story line this one is constantly jumping around in time, flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks which takes you away from the stakes and makes you forget what you are even fighting for. Characters in this game seem to make decisions not in line with their prior appearances and seem to only do things to further the plot rather than for their own personal reasons.

The only saving grace of the story is the flashbacks which remind you of both the first game and what this game could have been. Sadly 2/10 is the highest this game can achieve for me as what is a story game without a compelling gripping story?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished playing the game

All I can say is I hate it

Graphics : 10/10 the graphics is at best for a console video game

Fighting mechanics : 3/10 nothing new, only few animations which was implemented in fighting and of course now you can stealth prone... which was introduced in gaming maybe over 15 years ago in metal gear solid. Story : 0 /10

And of course, the STORY is garbage. In a story driven video game the story is what matters.

In this game the characters make stupid choices.

One example is the first game game Joel, he just give his name to a group of strangers with guns. Knowing that there are people looking for him after the choice he made in the first game.

And of course there is Abby, which will kill Joel in a brutal way at the very first 2 hours of the game.

Then you’ll be forced to play as this character who killed the best thing about the first game for almost 11 hours. In this game they kill Joel and make you play as the character who killed him, then try to make you sympathize with Abby. Which is almost impossible after what she did. The rest of the story feels boring, thanks to the bad writing.

And what makes the game worse is the forced agenda with meaningless characters

Definitely a Zero from me as a fan of the original game.

And maybe it might get 5 or 6/10 from a non-biased revier

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The reason why I give 3 is because the graphics and the gameplay seem spectacular to me. It happens that, being this is a The last of us and that his story is an insult compared to the first, it is what makes this my opinion about the game. Joel's death is not what makes it a bad game, moreover, it is the way he dies. There are so many "coincidences" that occur in this scene that makes it seem too surreal. Another point that seemed very ridiculous to me was the fact that Ellie started with her revenge, killing many people in order to get to Abby, and in the end saying that she does not want to do it, because "Revenge is bad, it kills the soul and poisons her. " Yes, that circle of hatred and revenge has ended, but the damage has already been done and for forgiving the last person does not mean that you will forgive everything. It's too late to regret it, there's no reason to do something as stupid as what happened in the end. Another thing I did not like, I felt the story about Abby quite forced, I think nobody is interested in knowing the story of, someone who has just killed one of the most beloved characters in the game. It feels like they want you to feel sorry for that person, when deep down you just want to play with Ellie and go straight for revenge on her. The scenes of romance, especially Owen's with Abby, I was like What the **** am I watching, a soap opera or a story in a world full of infected? My conclusion: this is not a The Last of Us, it is a Love Problem in a world full of zombies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To preface this review/rant; It took me nearly two weeks of processing my feelings to decide where I stood on this game after completing it on June 21st. I would advise anyone reading these reviews to give no weight to reviews left on release date, June 19th. There's simply too much to unpack here, including finishing the game, which took me 23 hours altogether.

Notice how the extremely negative reviews push buzzwords/terms, and don't mention much of anything coherent? It's not a coincidence. These reviews do not elaborate what "plot holes" exist, they do not elaborate on what makes the story poor, in their opinion. The people leaving these reviews are either experiencing grief over the death of Joel, and don't understand how to process it, or are internet trolls/bigots and are a waste of your time. More often than not, people get angry when they don't understand something that they cannot change.

This game pushes the boundaries of what the medium can be, and it will go over the heads and hearts of those with a lack of emotional intelligence and an ability to look deeper than what is on the surface.

I believe that this game is phenomenal, heartbreaking, complex, and challenges the player on an emotional level. While it wasn't the story that I personally wanted, due to an attachment over the characters from the first game, Part II tells a complicated and nuanced story that gets you personally invested from the early hours of playing. It takes away something you care deeply about, and then challenges you to overcome your anger and hatred, tying the player directly into the same struggle that Ellie endures.

The game hits a very hard point halfway through that flips the script and has you play as Abby, the person responsible for your anger and pain. It's not comfortable, at all, but it is necessary for helping the player understand the bigger picture. It mirrors the journey and experiences that Joel had in the first game through Abby's decisions and journey involving Yara and Lev, showing that these characters are much more than just their actions. It shows that both Eliie and Abby and have the same motivations - to seek revenge on those who wronged them.

I believe that most of the hate for this game comes down to Abby killing Joel. Ultimately, if players could accept Joel as an extremely flawed character and justify his actions (remember his decision from the first game to murder dozens of innocent people, including those working on trying to save the world from the cordyceps pandemic? Not to mention his past as a hunter...) to "rescue" Ellie for questionable personal reasons, they must also accept that Abby is just in her actions to avenge her father, the firefly surgeon who was murdered by Joel.

My only critique is that I do feel the game almost had too much on it's plate. While maybe it wouldn't have been practical, I believe the story could have been told better by having players experience more with Abby before Joel's death.

The story of the game does not worth my waiting and expectation for years. This is not a story that I wanted, especially the ending part. I can feel in the entire game that how the writer hates the characters that we love deeply. How ridiculous and how ego the writer is to force the players to torture the characters that they love and force the players to make decisions that they do not want to do. It makes me sick to play the second half of the game.
I wouldn't give it a score below 5 because the graphic, the light, the flight and the battlefield do a fantastic job! But the story just break my heart. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Actual rating is around a 8.6, but rounded up as i cant do that.

Very well written story. Never have i ever engaged more with a game and felt more emotionally tied to the main characters. I was aware of the leaks so was a bit apprehensive but i went in with an open mind and they have done a really good job with the story as i have grown to really love Abby as well now. Playing it multiple times have led to me seeing encounters i wasn't even aware off, and the foreshadowing for future events is really good. The use of Ellie's Journal for her thoughts is phenominal, especially after she kills Mel and is suffering. She questions her own motives, which is why the ending was fine for me - It was never ever purely about revenge. As heartbreaking as the ending was, I believe it was the nicest thing we could have had for Ellie. She lost so much, I needed an end to all her guilt and that is exactly what we got

Drawbacks i have for it are that I would have preferred a nice balance between the two characters. Abby felt like fight after fight whilst Ellie was story after story. I would have loved to see some more fighting from Ellie's aspect, and some more story telling from Abby's. I wasn't really that emotionally invested in Owen, Mel or Nora so felt unaffected when Abby went back to seek revenge for them. (Maybe thats what N-dog wanted, idk but I would've preferred some more story telling for Abby there (especially with Owen).

Also, there is no MULTIPLAYER. Very gutting. Plus so far there is no prospect for any DLC?!?!?!? I would have loved to see more about their life in Jackson, or some more about what Tommy and Joel got up to.

I would like to have enjoyed to play with Ellie and Dina abit more. Their chemistry was fabulous.

Overall, its a well thought out game. People hating on it for no reason imo and kudos to the ENTIRE naughty dog team. Even though people have mixed reviews about the game, there is no doubt about the hard work you done in making the environment, sounds, and accessibility.

A title that demands self-reflection on how we condition ourselves to selectively elevate and suppress flaws and virtues of people based on entrenched biases.
A game about the dangers of emotionally missing a forest for its trees that hilariously (yet predictably) translated in a vocal and immature critical backlash from people guilty of that same mistake.
Ignore the silly user score. Its something special that I'm sure will influence other creative minds in the industry to elevate story-telling to levels this industry never tried to. At least I hope so. It would be a shame if this level of maturity, respect for the audience's intelligence and courage went to waste with no follow-up.
Buy it. A joy to play and a story that stays with you long after the console is turned off.
    A classic to be remembered.

If you love it, welcome to this great audio-visual work.

Part 2 is, above all, courage. Courage to do something that was not contemplated, something that would surprise again, and not what most of us expected.

    Part 1 changed the rules.
The second part does it again.

    Thank you, Naughty Dog.

*STORY: Peace is never lasting. And after a few years of tranquility established in a peaceful community, Joel and Ellie's lives are shaken by a violent event that will put the young woman on a quest for revenge.

Despite the mistakes Part 2 makes (irregular pace and hours of filling mostly), the story in Part 2 makes complete sense.
The ending is well-developed, but there is one particular moment that should have been mounted better.
Part 2 is the opposite of what the first one conveyed: Part 2 is sad, very sad.

*GAMEPLAY: Part 2 improves very positively the ganeplay of the first one, which was already quite good, but it still had things that could be improved or added and Part 2 does it in a fantastic way.

*GRAPHICS: Part 2 is a graphic and artistic beast. It's not the best graphics game on the market, but it's on the podium without a doubt.

*SOUND: Part 2 has an exquisite soundtrack, at the level of the first one or even better, since it's much more innovative than the first part, which could be too similar to each other.

*INNOVATION: Part 2 risks a lot. For some a success, for others a failure. Of course, it's fresh air despite being a second part.
We find new weapons, new objects, new enemies and, above all, a great new sequel.

A brilliant companion piece to the first classic to bring the story full circle.
As for the negative reviews giving 1 star. Let's dissect that for a minute. These reviews are saying this game, it's graphics, gameplay and story are one of the worst games ever made? It's laughable so you can happily ignore those reviews. They're from trolls who haven't even played the game because let's face it, why would someone spend 30 hours of their life playing a game they thought was one of the worst ever made.
This game's story, among its many themes, is about choices and their consequences. Naughty Dog has made a game that forces you to play through the consequences of those choices which carry over from the first game and they're confronting. It just takes a little emotional intelligence, emotional maturity and empathy to appreciate the wrenching experience they've achieved in this game. Unfortunately trolls don't have those traits and are doomed to spiral down a path of hate that will only damage themselves. Ironically, if they played the game, they just might learn that.

The ending gets things back on course, but I just wasn't invested any longer.
I've heard some complaints that the game tries to be too "woke". They do shove some of their ideology in there unnecessarily, but it doesn't ruin the game for me. It is forced and doesn't make sense in the world of the game, but it's mostly just an annoyance.
I just hope if they decide to make a third, they scrap all the nonsense and learn from their mistakes.

You go and kill off joel almost as soon as the game starts whom we've waited to play for 7 years. And to kill him off in such a disrespectful manner, i mean you want us to believe that Joel has gotten soft while living in Jackson while Ellie has become a Master killer, give me a break! Stupid story, lack of inovativeness, the game forces you to like Abby. It tries to forcefully change the perspective which the first part built and tries to brainwash us by saying Joel is bad. Which in turn only makes matters worse and we hate abby more. Dina has 0 % charm/personality. We don't get to kill anyone meaningful by ourselves, only in cutscenes or quicktime events. They want us to believe hate/revenge is bad and Ellie doesn't kill Abby in the end because Joel would have wanted her to forgive her but inturn abby gets to get away with everything in the end. She show 0% of remorse and they want her to be seen as a hero and a victim of injustice. I for sure ain't gonna buy any naughty dog game in which Neil Druckmann is involved moving forth. Utter disappointment. Save your piece of mind and money please. I fell in love with the first part and now i hate this one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is my personal point of view. I really liked the game and I find a bit unfair all the negative comments going on.

I went through such an emotional roller coaster throughout the game and while I also had moments of 'anger' and frustration the first time they make you swap characters....as time goes by, it all made sense...starting to see the story develop from the 'enemy's' point of view was a progressive learning curve for Abby and would connect in such an emotional way with Ellie.

This stops being about the infection and more about humanity through different perspectives. It was so nostalgic and emotional all the way you can connect with each character as you spend more time with them, exploring more views of the world we hadn't seen from Ellie's point of view. It was such an emotional wreck when you see a similar reflection of Ellie's story through Abby as she also goes through similar changes of heart and perspectives as she also connects with Lev. It is kind of a mirror story from Ellie and Joel in a way, and I've found the storytelling as a genius plan.

The way Joel is portrayed was super emotional as well...it makes you right away feel Ellie's anger and as she goes on and on...as much as loving Ellie, you feel like you just want her to stop being in pain...and all the shocking moments in Seattle and her reason to go out again to California....is so powerful and painful (in a respectful way and greatly done).

While also kind of hating to play as Abby at first, as time went by, the story makes you really connect with her and I've found it brilliant how the game gives you an expanded and also different experience that at the end, I ended up enjoying a lot. The different weapons, fighting style, challenges and also epic story and challenges to face as Abby, were great.

I've never felt so conflicted internally when you connect again with Ellie....I just didn't want to fight against her and while you start to understand Abby, you want them to stop...it was so thrilling to play through that, knowing both's perspectives. Then being Ellie again and fighting against Abby out of rage and all the trouble you go through....was so emotional and I found a great resolution of Ellie finally 'letting go'.

I have nothing but respect and thanks to Naughty Dog for making such a bold and daring new emotional experience as a whole. I'll always love Ellie and Joel, but this second part made me go beyond what I thought about empathy and perspective of different people. This was such a powerful experience.

Beyond the great story everything is amazingly executed, the artistry, environments, animation, lighting, fx, cinematography, the connection between cinematics and playable action and of course, the beautiful and melancholic music. If I had a hat on, I'd take it off and say: Thank you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What is to be said about this game? The first one was a masterclass of storytelling with gripping and emotional moments. Genuinely likable characters throughout the game and an inseparable, unforgettable bond between Joel and Ellie. Excellent combat and unique enemy types to an already stale genre in 2013 was a welcome addition to a fantastic narrative. The Last Of Us was a rollercoaster of a game that cemented itself in gaming history.

Now, remember my question? The Last Of Us Part II takes everything we loved about the first game and throws it aside for shock value and a shallow revenge plot with no resolution. Joel, a character universally loved by fans, is playable for 5 minutes and killed off within an hour. Nothing about it is compelling. We just get thrown into the shoes of a character we know nothing about on a mission to kill a settler from Jackson. Joel’s death is so rushed that it feels like the creators didn’t care about him in favor of this new group. One the group members even spits on him. A massive middle finger to fans of the first game. The first hour is an indicator of the rest of the game.

You then take control of Ellie, on her way to Seattle to get revenge on Abby, the character who killed Joel. Ellie’s section are so drawn out and boring though. The gameplay of TLOU2 hardly differentiates from its 2013 counterpart, with the exception of a jump button and the ability to to probe. Scavenging the vastly larger areas feels like a task and gets exhausting quick. The gameplay in TLOU1 worked because the narrative was so strong and you wanted to keep going. Here, I just wanted to get it over with so I could move on. That’s never a good sign in a game. Ellie’s segment ends with Abby finding her hideout after she left her map at the scene of Abby’s slain friends. You then take control of Abby, playing through Seattle again from her perspective. This is the problem with the second half of the game. Why would Naughty Dog have us play as Joel’s killer? It’s almost like they want us to like this character after what she did. They try way too hard as well. The problem being, none of her crew is interesting. They even let a pregnant woman go on the frontlines of combat, even though there are more capable characters seen around camp while playing the game. While Abby’s gameplay sections are the highlight of the game, it’s marred by the subpar story and characters. The ending is the biggest slap in the face in recent gaming history. After Ellie gets the upper hand on Abby in a fight, she decides to let her go without any explanation. Why did we just play this entire game? For that? There’s resolution at all and everything we did was for nothing. I’m conclusion, this game is a monumental disappointment. Sure the graphics, attention to detail, and combat are all top notch, but the forced moments, uninteresting characters, subpar story with no resolution, ruining established characters, and tiresome gameplay really hold this back from legendary status. I was honestly happy when the credits started rolling and I have never wanted that from a game before. We should have been playing as Abby in a flashback from the beginning of the game after she saw her father murdered. Take time to get to know her and her regiment for her revenge against Joel. Ellie and Joel should have had more gameplay together up until Ellie learns the truth about the hospital. She runs off and meets Abby, who she saves from an infected attack and joins her on her journey back to Jackson. They form a bond along the way and it’s the duo we play as. Then it’s back in Jackson that she learns about Joel and kills him which drives Ellie over the edge to seek revenge. That’s way more compelling than the story they took 7 years to tell us. I am not looking forward to a third game after this.

In my opinion, the story was great, however certain decisions of characters as well as storytelling was questionable at some points. It could have been better, but it definitely wasn't bad. I absolutely love character development and interactions in the game. The game is full of emotions and you will feel them too. It's really strange, because I have never felt such a wide range of emotions while playing a game. I felt anger, sadness, pity, nostalgia and very rarely even joy. Very rarely. That's the difference between the first game and the sequel. TLOU part 2 is a very tough game to swallow and when I finished it, I actually felt quite depressed (not because it was bad :) but quite the opposite).

The graphics are great, really love that post-apocalyptic style and TLOU captures that perfectly, although some areas look graphically a bit worse than other areas, it's not a big deal. When it comes to gameplay, I think the sequel is better in every way. I also loved the sound effects and soundtrack, but I feel like the original TLOU had more memorable soundtrack. During my playthrough I encountered a few bugs, nothing game-braking though. I enjoyed the otion of 'crafting' your own difficulty, as the game allows you to change difficulty in 5 different areas of gameplay. I found enemy combat to be one of the best, ever. The combat is dynamic and fluid, but also allows you to use different tactics. I especially enjoyed certain enemy types, such as dogs or the enemy group known as Scars, who can surround you and ambush you. Sometimes however, I should have definitely been seen by the enemy AI (the same applies for allies). What I personally didn't like was pacing. Sometimes it felt like stuff were a bit repetitive or the story did not advance much, other times there was one big thing after another.

To sum it all up, I think the game is great, the first game was a masterpiece and part 2 definitely has something to it, that makes the game memorable. It is brutal and emotional. And even though you might not like the story, you can't deny the game's many qualities.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. to be honest when it comes to this game my feelings about it are all over the place, i both love and diss like the game in its entirety. i am a huge fan of naughty dog as a game studio and i loved both the last of us part 1 and the entire uncharted series.
I loved almost every aspect of the first half of the game, with my only criticism being that in my opinion they killed Joel a little to early. killing him as early as they did made the impact of his death not nearly as impactful as it could have been had they given us a few more hours with him. it was sad seeing a character that i loved so much die in the way he did. I don't have that much of a problem when it comes to the fact that it happened or how i happened, again it's more about when it happened. i wish i could have seen more of the relationship between Joel and Ellie in this game, so that Joel's death would have had a bigger impact and the reasoning/motivation for Ellie's journey through the game wold be greater.

other than what i just mentioned, i feel like the first half of the game was pretty great. it might be a little slow in the beginning, but i didn't really mind. even though Ellie isn't the same as we remembered her from the first game, i do fell like her transformation isn't too far fetched, and feels quite natural, considering what she's done and have been through. it was nice to see joel, even though it wasn't for long, it was nice to se him having changed for the better, having become a sweeter and more friendly/dad type of person.

when it comes to the story aspect of the game i think it is pretty great...in theory or as a concept. I see what naughty dog tried to do, when they made us play ass abby for the other half of the game. in concept i would say that it does sound interesting to play as "the villain" of the game to show the world your playing in, from other perspectives, also pushing the narrative of revenge (why Ellie/Abby seek revenge and what happens as a result of chasing it). to me it does sound compelling, its a good thought that potentially could work, but didn't really in this context. i found the theme of revenge in this game cool, but in the end it felt a little messy, considering the abby part of the game.

the abby part of the game completely derails from what we have been playing for the last 12 hours. we play as Ellie going on a quest for revenge, a quest that turns out to be very brutal, bloody and mentally tolling for ellie. when the the story reaches the big climax, abby shows up to face Ellie once and for all, the game decides to beat you down by taking you back to the beginning only now its from the perspective of abby. this really didn't feel good is also part of the reasons the abby part didn't really hit it home for me.

the abby part of the game had a lot of awesome gameplay and a lot of cool guns, something i do think was intentional, to try and make you like abby more without thinking. but ultimately it doesn't feel good to play as abby, it doesn't matter how much they tried to make me like her or how much they tried to explain her actions. to me she was always the person that killed Joel, something i couldn't jus shove under the rug and accept. for something like that to work she would have needed a lot more time to be established and developed as a character. i feel like that potion portion of the game lasted to long and wasn't really all that necessary, with a few changes to the story you could have shortend the game and thrown out the entire abby part, making room for a more impactful ending of the game. i feel that there are many ways to carry the same message, and show the same perspectives without having to play as abby. to me if you hadn't played as abby as much as you did, especially after she killed joel, the game would have been a lot better in my opinion.

i see what naughty dog was trying to do, and i respect the for trying something new even though it didn't really work this time. the games biggest upsides/strengths are its attention to detail, graphics and gameplay. it was a joy to play this game..for the most part, even though the story and ending did disappoint me quite a bit. i love naughty dog and still do, even though i am very saddened about the outcome of the game, its not a horrible game but it disappoints in one of the most important parts of the game, something that truly breaks mye heart.

i do feel that there is way to many people hating and focusing on the wrong aspects of the game, there is a lot i haven't mentioned and i didn't really go to much in depth.i feel like its important to be critical of a game, but don't be a di@k an review bomb the game, just because there were elements of it being disappointing/bad. the game doesn't deserve a one or a two, it deserves better than that its not a bad game, it just fails to fully do the first game justice as a sequel.
