    Outstanding game! Anyone who downrates this game because of the characters or story are just ridiculous and narrow minded. The range of emotion this sequel brings forth is on another level to gaming. It will keep you guessing until the very end and will have your jaw constantly dropping in awe at how stunningly and horrifying this apocalyptic earth has become.     I took my time to play it through around 33 hours until completion.

    I finished it a week ago and I can’t stop thinking about the game. So I looked at the many reviews positive and negative.

    In my personal opinion some of the hot topics a certain death, a certain playable character and the overall story need discussion.

    The death - didn’t have a problem with it I thought it drove the story

    Abby - she was awesome, first 30 mins I was like why am I playing as Abby but I loved the change of pace and in the end I didn’t know what I wanted

    Story - at the time I was so engrossed I absolutely loved the story. Upon reflection some criticisms are ok, I’m ok with Mel being pregnant for example but it was weird that she went out on patrol. Overall I think the heavy criticisms are in general not fair.

    Side note - the game play is improved, graphics improved and the game is really fun. Side note - rat king was awesome.

    Side note - loved the time line! For me it’s a 9 because it was close to perfect just some story holes that I was happy to overlook / didn’t notice.    … Expand

    Great gameplay that builds upon the previous game with added movement actions like jumping, dodgimg and prone. Seamless stealth and action with well integrated and creative environmental puzzles (largely thanks to the amazing rope physics.)

    The graphics are amazing, one of the best looking games on PS4. They're really pushing the PS4 Pro hardware to it's limits and it shows.     Very bold and ambitious storytelling that aims to challenge people personal biases by subverting expectations and I believe it's done very well.

    Some of the best characterization in a video game. Hyper realistic characters with lots of emotional depth. Really fantastic writing.

    The way most people are criticizing this game is very shallow and reactionary. I think there are valid criticisms about the game. Not necessarily all ones that I will agree completely with but more valid ones nonetheless.

    I understand if the game if the game is too grim for some people's liking. That’s going to be a preference thing and people have different thresholds for that. It's a sad, feel bad kind of game but it's also beautiful too.

    I know this is not a story many wanted.

    I had no story that I wanted. I like my expectations subverted when done well and for the most part I think they did do it well.

    This game is not a 0 or a 10. Not garbage but definitely not a masterpiece. The only thing you prove by saying this is the greatest game of all time is that you haven’t played the first one. I don’t think many people expected Joel to live. Troy Baker has stated on multiple occasions that he wanted him to die in the first one. No one thought he would die in such a senseless way though. ItThis game is not a 0 or a 10. Not garbage but definitely not a masterpiece. The only thing you prove by saying this is the greatest game of all time is that you haven’t played the first one. It would’ve been much more meaningful if he had deserved it. The game would like you to think he did but in order for that to be true you have to disregard why he killed Abby’s father in the first place. Abby’s father wanted to cut open Ellie (killing her in the process) to find a cure. Putting aside the obvious reasons why it’s wrong to kill a 14 year old girl the first game tells you through notes that they’ve tried the same procedure on other people they thought were immune before but it didn’t work. This game conveniently throws all that out the window. Instead they would like you to believe the fireflies were good people and not the fanatic paramilitary organization they were in the first one. Not many people have pointed this out in their reviews so I felt I should touch on this specifically. In short there’s a lack of continuity. There’s a long list of other examples of this and other criticisms to be had with the plot but you can scroll down for those. That being said graphics are gorgeous, gameplay in general is improved. Upgrading is better, silencers, melee combat, animations, and the music is nice too. Accessibility controls are a nice touch too but they’re not that groundbreaking.

    I would recommend you play the first one. Skip this one or wait until it’s marked down by half or even lower. Definitely not worth the 60 dollar pricetag    … Expand

    what a masterpiece, best game i've ever played for sure, story, character design was on point. Sure, everyone has their own perspective on the story, you just don't experience your own story, but someone else's. And that is what makes this game so great.     - I personally really enjoyed the game play. It was a sequel so I do not really understand people wanting different game play aspects although I may be misinterpreting what they are actually complaining about.
    - They added enough features for me for it to be refreshing, but similar in most aspects.
    - I love the stealth in this game and how I can basically sneak past enemies in most situations, but having the consequence of not having looted them.
    - The fluidity of grabbing objects and quick throwing was something I have not personally experienced in any other game and I love that. (Know that I play little single player games)
    - I generally aim for platinum in story games and I will replay the game to get all of the collectibles, but I do not like collecting these things. I could really care less for cards, letters and coins, and it ruins the immersion for me. That being said, none of the collectibles had to be collected during boss fights, during chasing scenes, or places where you have to time it right. I appreciate this as I do not have to be reading Johnny's final letter of wanting a sock for Christmas. I understand that it allows for a reminder of civilization and people's old lives or whatever but I do not want to take time off exploring and fighting to be reading.
    - Each kill is so satisfying and can be so grotesque and I love it. The extended period of choking someone only to finally snap their necks is disgusting and actually makes me reflect on how desensitized I am to violence in games. That didn't stop me from completing the mission, but it did make me think (which I think was their intention).
    - Having the enemies cry out their friend's names as I kill them was a nice added touch but I did not notice it too much.

    Story - Random Order Sorry

    - I did not find the relationship between Ellie and Dina forced.
    - I loved the fact that Joel died early, as I felt just as Ellie was feeling at that moment.
    - I have never felt as the protagonist was feeling throughout the story in any other game.
    - I did not understand the whole need for there to be Dina and Ellie smoking weed.
    - I do not think that the Abby and Owen sex scene was at all necessary for the plot.
    - I felt the anger with Ellie and wanted each participant of Joel's death to die and I was satisfied enough for killing them but also felt the need for more vengeance.
    - I am a bit conflicted with the whole Abby half of the story. By the end of it, I still wanted Ellie to win the fight, but at the very least I understand Abby's anger despite me still not liking her. (Which I'm fairly certain met Naughty Dog's vision and criteria).
    - I would have preferred for there to not be a Day 1 for Abby because I found none of that day memorable. I honestly can't remember what happened then. I would have liked for Abby's story to start at the hanging scene. The main reason I feel like I forgot about Day 1 Abby is because I was still processing and waiting for the game to return to the theater as I was desperate to know what happened.
    - The whole Seth thing at the start was okay and I was fine not knowing how it happened. When we actually get to the dance scene, I found it a bit forced and odd.
    - I was initially sad that I thought Ellie had forgotten about Joel and moved on with Dina and J.J. on a farm. I was happy to know that Ellie hadn't forgotten and actually has P.T.S.D. When her previous journey was out of rage, her journey from the farm and back to Ellie was more out of desperation. The fact that she can't sleep or eat and has had episodes which can be a risk for the family, she is desperate for some sort of closure. (So my point is I like this storytelling).
    - I found it odd that after Jesse's death, and all of Abby's friend's death, they are never mentioned again. The only thing I can think of is that it is just another day in the post-apocalyptic world and that this is a normal reaction to death being so desensitized to it. Even so, I don't think it was well shown as the reason for this.
    - I am glad that some of the deaths like Jesse was quick because I do not want every character to have a dramatic death. Some of those quick deaths added to the shock value.
    - I really like the overall themes and ideas of this story. I was satisfied with beating her up at the beach, but also appreciated that she let her live because of the memory of Joel and theme of forgiveness.
    - Tommy left Jackson without Ellie to protect her. When he arrived back with Ellie and Jesse to the theater, he was content with letting Abby live, until she came back and killed Jesse, got shot in the face, and lost his relationship with Maria. By the time of the farm, he is in the same state Ellie was previously.
    Other -
    - The accessibility options in the game are of something like never before. So many options to assist visually impaired, individuals difficulty of hearing, mobility impaired, and quality of life options are a step in the right direction.    … Expand

    El segundo mejor juego para mi en la consola ps4 los gráficos la historia me gusto un súper juego mis respetos para los creadores una que otra cosita no me gusto pero mmmm no es para que no le diera el 100% de mi voto en cuanto para mi gusto uno de los mejores juegos de la play 4 súper contento satisfecho del inicio al final !!!!!

Este juego es una obra maestra, su jugabilidad, graficos, y su muy criticada historia te dejan ver lo que es un juego de verdad, que por mas que vos quieras las cosas no van a ser como decis, este juego es muy completo, el gameplay es fluido, dinamico, con muchisimos detalles que cuando pensas lo bien hecho que está, por que al fin y al cabo esos pequeños detalles como las zapatillas manchadas de sangre cuando pasas por encima de un enemigo abatido o el detalle de dispararle a un puente y que pequeños pedazos de concreto del puente caigan al agua dando un efecto TAN real hacen que este juego te ponga en otra atmosfera con sus graficos y fisicas. En cuanto a historia lo que no me gusto es el excesivo gameplay con Abby, que esta bien por que lo que quiere naughty dog es hacerte empatizar con ella, pero en mi opinion si hubieran reducido el gameplay con ella un 50% hubiera sido mejor para todos, se hace muy largo y agotador jugar tanto tiempo con ella. En cuanto a la muerte de Joel, es el detonante del juego, sin su muerte no hay historia, esta mas que bien que joel no muera de forma heroica por que al fin y al cabo es un mundo post apocalíptico, donde no hay buenos y malos, solo gente que se dedica a sobrevivir. Terminando con esta critica, es el juego de la decada en mi opinion, una lastima que haya gente tan estupida que no pueda ver la grandeza de este juego solo por que las cosas no salen como ellos quieren.… Expand

I would love to have a discussion with you as long as it stays civil. Also, my opinion really doesn’t matter, it’s the internet for gods sake! I will be splitting this into 4 parts. I’m gonna refer to choice as a big theme by the way. I liked the idea from Left Behind in part 1. 1. Joel’s Death. Ah yes, the main talking point of this game besides the ending. Joel’s death was harsh and brutal, yet deserving. Not everyone deserves a heroes death, and Joel wasn’t exactly a good person. He robbed, he smuggled, he killed, and took away humanity’s last chance for prosperity. That being said, it sucked, enough to make me cry, but it felt right, no matter how horrible it was. Nothing can be a perfect death, or a happy ending. Joel’s death and the way it happened was warranted. It tells me that this is truly the apocalypse. You can’t expect a girl like Abby who saw her father dead on the floor in the hospital to be soft and empathetic. She’s ruthless, and I love it. Now though I miss Joel, his death scene truly was heartbreaking but he surely didn’t deserve what most would call a heroic ending.

    2. Seattle

    Seattle to me was beautiful, and the mini stories told there gave it life. But, to keep it short, it was fairly repetitive. Leave theater, explore, find a way through here, kill a couple of infected or bad guys, explore more, kill more, have a small encounter, such as the one with Jesse, escape dramatically, rinse and repeat. To me, I enjoyed Seattle with Abby more than Ellie. Abby’s was a lot more clever to me, and had some different encounters. 2.5
    I lied, here’s a small extra part. The flashbacks, with both Abby and Ellie were outstanding. It really filled gaps I didn’t even know I had. 3. The fight scene with Ellie and Abby.

    Bridging the stories together after doing two individual sections, when Abby finds the theater and takes Tommy hostage and kills Jesse, the fight scene that ensues was fun, but a little lack luster. I wish it could’ve had some choice to it. Such as, choose to be Abby or Ellie. If you choose Abby, do you kill Dina and die from QTEs or kill her and live or do neither and die? (etc.) Or can you choose Ellie and kill Abby, making the farm scene the last scene of the game. I think a little more though could’ve been put in.

    3.5. I lied again. I’m gonna talk about the farm scene here instead of 4. I wish you could have some more choice here. Choose to stay with Dina or leave? I think it would’ve been interesting.

    4. Santa Barbara. The ending. Probably my favorite portion of the game. The environment is amazing. But why? As said in 3.5, why come here? Why choose to lose it all? But still, the idea is interesting. I’m gonna skip to the end of it to save time. The final fight scene was, interesting. Again, some choice here would’ve made sense. Kill Abby? Either way, the ending plays out. Ellie returns to an empty home, tries to play guitar, but can’t. The ending is heart wrenching and made me cry quite a bit. Saying how that was basically the most important, in my eyes, thing Joel ever gave Ellie. It leaves me with questions; where did Dina go? Where did Ellie go? What happened with Abby and Lev? What happened with JJ? All of these are something I want to see in a DLC or even a third game if possible.

    My final rating. I give this game a 9.4/10. The game was phenomenal, and the story was amazing. To those who don’t understand the story, please think deeper than the surface. It makes so much more sense. The overwhelming urge to kill Abby and everyone there in Jackson during Joel’s death, completely extinguished as flashbacks of Joel tell Ellie to stop. This is the most powerful game I have played in years. I really do hope this game recovers from the review bombs and I hope we see a wrap up to Abby and Lev and Dina Ellie and JJ.     Absolutely beautiful game filled with an emotional story and addicting gameplay. The story is so gripping from start to finish. One of my top 3 favorite games ever.

    Production values that suggest Naughty Dog are in a league of their own. Intense, kinetic gameplay. A polarizing story that still has me thinking, then, rethinking. Its length and story structure are questionable, but The Last of Us Part II is an experience like few others.

Killing off one major character for shock value just to "launch" that **** revenge story. No hope in this game, just anxiety and depression. The characters weren't loveable, even those we knew from the first game. Oh wait, the only characters I cared about were Tommy and Owen. Critics aren't objective about this game and it makes me sick. And no, this game is far from being a masterpiece with tons of plot holes. It's an okay game at best. And it's definitely not GOTY. Now no wonders why everyone on ND abandoned ship! Not buying any more games from them, as they keep trolling fans on social media instead of just taking criticism and make better games.… Expand

    The best I've ever played. The project is comparable to large series. even at the end of the game after 30 hours of gameplay it’s not annoying. Break through to tears in the finals. Great game. THANKS TO THE DEVELOPERS.

    I really can't help but feel the people who have "problems" with the story, missed the entire point of the first game. For instance Joel is not a horrible character, but he is definitely not a "good guy."     I just finished the game and it was fantastic. I'll try to keep this spoiler free, the gameplay was fun and kept me on my toes and felt pretty realistic most of the time. The story was very good I still don't understand all the hate I really don't think it's deserves. I would say if you are on the fence give it a try.

    I bought ps4 just because of this game, and it was worth every penny... I played in row TLOU part 1 and part 2, and clearly I can say that I've never played anything like this... 10/10 for me and that's it, I have no more words for that... Iam just speachless..

    I was lucky enough to avoid most of the spoilers going into the game and as a result I was pretty unsullied when it came to a lot of the criticisms towards it. I personally really enjoyed the original game's gameplay along with it's fantastic story andeverything that goes into it. This game is definitely a continuation of all of that and more. If I knew that they were going to kill off my favorite characters i would be angry too. The story of revenge and its cost was brilliant. The visuals and sound were next level. My favorite part was Ellie singing Take on me, and performed beautifully by the actress. The flashbacks sequences were emotional and brought storytelling in games to another level.     Made an account just to review this game. I loved it. Brilliant, risky storytelling, amazing graphics, intense gameplay. Naughty Dog really outdid themselves by telling a graphic, relatable, heartbreaking story with amazingly fleshed out characters and splendid direction.

    Playable and enjoyable, with different little quirks and messes and an overflowing fountain of risk and controversy, this game is still definitely a must-play. I would give it a 10 for having the balls alone to pull what they did, but nothing is a 10 in my view. So if the first game is a 9 for me, then this one is n 8. It's an experience!

    This was a great game. Took me roughly 30hours. The combat felt so good and the sound was amazing. As well as the levels environment and atmosphere is superb. I cannot help but keep comparing it to the first game. Once you get to the menu. Nothing. Just a boat resting on water. And during cutscenes it doesn’t have the same impact as when we watched Henry and Sams death or many other emotional scenes from the first game. Those moments is what stuck in people’s mind but this game didn’t give me that. I could just sit at the menu for the first game with the background music playing it was perfect. Some reason they didn’t go this far for the sequel. Disappointing. Would I play again? After platinuming the game on a second play through. I cannot see playing this game again.     I think all the hate is overblown and unwarranted. You may not be fond of the story and I understand. But from my play-through, the gameplay and combat was fantastic. i liked the story and they really didn't meant to be sympathetic to abby, they just wanted you to understand from another perspective, and I did. One of the best games of 2020 in my honest opinion.

    I wanted this game to be swan song of the ps4. Sadly it fell short of its goals. Given how it look I can give an a plus for that, but thats not why I played The Last of Us. Its the story and character is what I care about. Gameplay can be dragged on to long and the ending was totally unsatisfying.

    Despite the negative reviews, I'd give this game a 10/10. It talks about a lot of important issues, (Ellie being a lesbian for one) but i personally can relate to the Ellie and Joel relationship.

    Worth every peso i spent to get this game at launch

If you are looking to buy this game to continue the story of Joel and Ellie.....dont buy it as all your in for is about a quarter or a third of the game played similarly to the first one minus Joel then you watch him get murdered then they make you play as his killer in an attempt to make you feel for abby so you don't hate the ending that is ellie just changing her mind and not kill her. Whole game was about ellies revenge but she backs out......starts great ends poorly. Ps Metacritic - stop basing your scores off of sales figures. They should have learned from GOT that subverting expectations isn't always a good thing. Also with the BS copyright strikes to youtube channels like Geeks and Gamers they deserve the criticism

Every person in the world instantly hated Abby and ND forces you to feel sorry for her. I'm sorry, but HELL NO. I don't care what happened to Abby, I don't care what happens in her part of the story, all I care about is, you killed the the character so early in the game that you had built upon in the first game. My second point for disliking the story is the way they presented Joel in Part 2. So we all know how Joel is like in the first game, he doesn't trust anybody early, keeps himself discreet, etc. Now you make him so Naive that he trusts a Stranger and goes into her house/hideout and without any hesitation tells his name? That is Pure BS. They could've done soooo much with the story and I think they chose the worst way for the story.

    The story is uninspired. The characters are uninteresting, one-dimensional and forgettable. Several are introduced as deus-ex machina devices to save the day out of nowhere. The Story feels fragmented and scattered.

    For a story driven game, this is unacceptable. It would be ok for a game based on gameplay above story, but ironically the gameplay was portion of the first game that was barely touched on the second one. There are minor improvements: you can jump (but the jump button is pointless). Enemies have dogs!
    But excluding minor QoL changes, combat, stealth and crafting system are the same. And if they weren't particularly impressive in 2013 when the first game launched, they're pretty outdated in 2020. Which would be fine if the narrative was as good as the first game. But it isn't.    … Expand

    This is my 1st game review ever, but I feel compelled to add my 2 cents as I am a fan of the original and the zombie genre.

    It’s important to understand that this game may upset the loyalist but remains true to the cinematic story created and in which you play countless hours traversing thru.

    That being said, the world these characters live in is cold, violent, dangerous, painful, emotional, and most importantly has consequences.

    Let’s first understand that TLOU part 1 is not Joel’s story. He is the vehicle that propels the story, which is Ellie’s story. Ellie is the cure; Ellie is the reason to go across the country to get her to the Fireflies; Ellie is the reason Joel transforms and wants to save the daughter he couldn’t. Joel’s story hasn’t been told. Joel’s story is in the 20 years between his daughter’s death and when he accepts to smuggle Ellie across the country. I assume that his story will be told with the TV show coming to HBO.

    TLOU 2 is Abby’s story. She seeks revenge to kill Joel for killing her father. This was the consequence of saving Ellie in addition to stripping away humanity’s hope for a cure to the virus. A selfish act on Joel’s part, yet we celebrate that decision. It shouldn’t sit well with anyone despite it being a great game, but this game at its core is a cinematic experience and that’s what makes this game complex, emotional, and a masterpiece.

    Story: Well if you played it then you know that gamers are split on the story. Some people hate it and some people love it. I have to look at this from both sides of the coin. As a game, it’s complex and I would have to say ahead of its time. Balancing the cinematic along with it being a game is a challenge. However, I do expect more of this with the upcoming PS5. The focus will be not just on gameplay but the incredible storytelling that will sway more towards the cinematic. Now the story in TLOU2 is a great cinematic experience full of violence, danger, pain, emotion, and most importantly consequences. As I mentioned, the story fits the world these characters are in, but I do think there could have been a better payoff at the end. A better ending would have been for ND to have us believe Ellie kills Abby, to later find out that she is actually still alive. This still would have given the gamer closer and still been a setup for a TLOU 3 which is what they intended with the current ending anyway. I think Naughty Dog would need to add a DLC that would entice us to buy TLOU 3. As it stands now there are too many people distraught over Joel’s death and Abby still gets to live. So, I get that. I think a DLC should focus on Lev and Abby in Catalina and the reemergence of the Fireflies as well as Ellie’s life after this experience. Will the Fireflies come after her for the cure? Will Ellie start her life outside of Jackson?

    Gameplay: The gameplay mechanics are hands down incredible. Crafting is always fun and the game is more challenging than the first. I actually like Abby’s gun better so I had a blast playing 2 different characters with different weapons and strength. It was like playing 2 games in one. I also liked that ND added accessibility features which allows new players with a handicap to play. I think the gameplay was fun and well thought out. Thankfully that they didn’t change too much from the original game. Lastly, I like that I got to keep all my upgrades every time I play so that was cool.

    Graphics: Stunning! The landscape is ridiculous and the best I have ever seen! The best scenes are when you first meet Lev and Yara and when Ellie chases Nora. Those were incredible sequences.

    So, I will give this game an 8 overall. I think you have to just try to accept the story and trust in the journey. I think just a standard linear story would have been boring, so I like that ND tried to do something very different at the risk of losing some loyalists. They stayed true to the characters within this world they have created. However, without a DLC I think it would not excite most fans to return. One other thing I would like to see added is perhaps a way to skip some of the flashbacks for your 2nd walkthrough. It doesn’t add value to the gameplay and I just want to kill Scars, Rattlers, and Zombies. Lol! I think it’s a great game, but you must let the story carry you and not go against the grain.     The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
