Naughty dog and all the staff involved with every aspect of the game should be commended for thinking outside the box and giving an engaging experience to players. It encouraged different perspectives, not just the blind kill everyone and everything that walks approach of other games.
Overall this was a highly enjoyable experience, perhaps not for everybody but I recommend trying the game itself to form your own opinion as some opinions on this game can be biased. Happy playing!

The game hit so many emotional high points. Pacing felt like a roller coaster, with tense highs and dramatic lows. I both loved & hated almost every character. The game was incredible and I just wish I could play more of it. As a huge fan of the first story, I was immediately consumed by this one. It absolutely delivered.

Story: 0/10 This game is nothing like we promised. That recipe landed it the game of the year back then on the PS3 and then again on the PS4 when it was released as a remastered version which I also bought. I had two TLOU1 copies total spanning two systems. That was just how good it was.
Fast forward to today and to Part 2 of this iconic game. Let's start with what it got right from the recipe of the old game.

Apart from graphics, prone stealth, dodging, swinging and riding a boat, there wasnt much on terms of innovation to make this game stand out for me. SPOILERS AHEAD

I pre-ordered this game twice, due to Sony canceling the first from delays. The first came from faith in Naughty Dog’s ability to deliver: verified throughout the Uncharted series and the first part of this series. The second pre-order was a decision I made after hearing that the story was leaked; I avoided the content of the leaks but witnessed the overwhelming negative reaction to them. The only hints I gathered for the plot were based on trailers and pre-leak comments, such as the theory that Joel dies -- which turned out to be correct. My excitement never died down, throughout all delays and controversy. I’ll make some notes about gameplay, but the focus of this review is the story, which has caused the most divisiveness online.

    GAMEPLAY
The gameplay and mechanics are great and drove me to keep playing for hours and hours in a single sitting. I played on Hard and it turned out to be a good balance between pacing and enjoyment (I didn't want to finish the game just for the story). My only problem is that I could rarely pull off the flashy moves seen in the trailers, which showcased incredible interactions with the enemies and environment. I think a future run-through on an easier difficulty will open up those possibilities, though. The ability to go prone was a simple but much-needed addition that made me feel more human and mobile than the first game. Most spaces were navigable and squeezing through narrow spots proved to be a satisfying mechanic.

    CHARACTERS
The newly-added characters are my biggest problem with the game.
In TLOU1, the writing combined with the voice acting resulted in some of the most engaging dialogues and personas I have had the pleasure of experiencing, in any form of media. The game's introduction -- a short and sweet conversation between a daughter and her dad -- had me deeply invested in Sarah and Joel quickly but organically. The Southern twang they spoke with made them unique and real, and contributed to the feeling that I knew who they were. When Sarah was killed, I was feeling the exact sense of dread that Joel felt, and this instantly cemented him as a do-no-wrong protagonist in my mind. Despite this, my positive view on him was constantly challenged throughout the game, though, making him more complex than just a 'good guy in a video game'. None of the other events of the story would have mattered if I didn’t initially care about Joel.

In TLOU2, I only saw this rich character evolution in characters I already knew, and this was because I understood who they were. I could recognize each turning point in their character arc, such as Tommy’s initial indecision on revenge transforming to his irrational desire for it. On the other hand, I could never engage so deeply with additions like Dina, Jesse, or Abby. Part of this was because the voice acting was fairly cookie-cutter, all sharing a rather neutral personality with no distinguishing emotional characteristics. They had stories to tell, but I couldn't care as much for them because they weren't distinct or special. This isn’t to say these characters didn’t undergo an evolution. For example, Abby helping Lev was a turning point for her, but it didn’t feel like one because I couldn’t determine who she was before this change.
Luckily, my enjoyment of the complete experience in TLOU2 made this less impactful than it could've been if, say, the gameplay or story were not as impressive as they were.

    STORY
After my first play-through, I felt the story did not live up to that of the first. This may have been due to preconceptions I garnered from the loud outsiders who bashed the plot before experiencing it. Sometimes, I would find myself picking at tiny details in the story rather than taking in the overall picture. Once I changed my microscopic view to a more holistic one, I came to love TLOU2’s story more than the first. No other game has given me so many different interpretations to the character’s reasonings, or had me questioning their decisions weeks after completion. No other game has drawn such a blurred line between protagonist and antagonist (I still don’t know who’s who). As my appreciation and love for Joel kept growing and growing through the incredible flashbacks with Ellie, a tug-of-war commenced between understanding Abby’s (and humankind’s) revenge while wishing that Joel lived, or at the very least, died a dignified death. This wasn’t the only tug-of-war going on; Ellie's internal conflict for revenge against Abby also left me deeply torn, as did many other decisions and deaths in the story. Despite this, in the end, every single rope broke and the immense pain endured by all parties to ‘win’ meant nothing.

Side note: Joel’s death scene is a masterpiece. The museum flashback is a masterpiece.

I truly loved this game. The stealth combat and set pieces are intense. The game is a technical marvel in terms of performance and animations. I was very onboard for where the narrative went. Very powerful, and it’s great to have a game present complicated motivations and morally ambiguous characters.

Games in which there's a good guy and and the good guy shoots the bad guy, the end, are many. The idea of seeking revenge on someone who killed someone for the same reason you plan on killing them for, for me is not a black and white matter and I may have made the same decision Elli did. In fact, I was relieved when she didn't kill Abbi. With all the baggage they all carry, and all the **** they've all been through, who knows what the correct decision would be at that point.

I have to say that it took me a while to get used to playing as Abbi, but I managed to connect to her as much as I had connected to Ellie. Overall, loved the game

(SPOILER WARNING) Spent and beat the game after 42 hours. It's an 8/10 from me and I wasn't dissapointed. Even in Joel's last words, you knew it was a long time coming. Gameplay and NPC AI is better than the first game, but not revolutionary. Pacing was also kinda **** with the back and forth via flashbacks. On the plus side this game is more re-playeble compared to the first game, as it is more trophy friendly and more variety in how enemy encounters play out. This also has to do with how big and varied the environments are, resulting in varied and entertaining scenarios with enemies. A second play-through will not play out the same as the first one. Some moments looked like game-play sections at an E3 presentation. Set peace moments are one of the best of this whole generation, even rivaling that of Uncharted's, especially in the Abby sections where the WLF and Saraphites go all out and burning down an whole island. When Ellie killed pregnant Mel, was one of the most shocking gaming moments in history IMO. This game has one of the best cut scenes I have ever seen both on a technical and emotional level. While this game is not as good and revolutionary as the first game, it is still a solid game. While I didn't want to continue after Joel died, I am still glad I did. While this game doesn't deserve GOTY, for the ****ty pacing being the biggest reason, it still should be discussed for years to come. Expand

As someone who played through TLoU1 many times, I can tell you the sequel absolutely lives up to expectations. It's really too bad that it's gotten caught up in so much controversy because it is truly a fantastic game. I would highly recommend that any fan of the original play this game.

    Quick thoughts on specific aspects:

Gameplay: This is where TLoU really shines. They took everything that was great about the first game and ratcheted it up. The stealth combat sections are incredibly tense and visceral. The AI is fantastic. The maps are large and varied. Crafting and skill trees were upgraded in a way that makes sense and does not feel unnecessarily complicated.

Visuals: The graphics here are absolutely stunning. From the countless minor touches to the massive set pieces, this is one of the 2-3 best-looking games I've ever played.

Sound: Same as visuals, the audio here is really top-notch. I especially liked the soundtrack they added for stealth combat sections against human enemies. The music has a tense Nine Inch Nails vibe that makes the encounters so much more tense. Enemy sounds are another standout. Human enemies have an impossibly wide range of audio splashes -- from side conversations to communicating via a whistle-based code ... it's really phenomenal.

Story: OK, so this is where the controversy comes in. Personally, I loved the story and I loved that Naughty Dog did not go in a predictable fan-service route for the sequel. I won't spoil it, but I did not have any problem with the choices they made. The story is definitely complex and it is NOT the straightforward, linear style we got in the first game. That is why I would definitely recommend 1.) beating the game, and 2.) replaying it before giving the story a final grade. I know it's a lot to ask someone to commit 50-60 hours like that, but I feel like this game is worth it.

I did have some small issues with the story. First, because of the way the story unfolds, it is difficult to develop the same level of emotional connection to the characters as you did in the first game. This game does some really cool things with flashbacks and perspective changes, but the trade-off is that you're not experiencing the same emotions in the same order as your character. I felt like it all fell into place by the end, which was incredibly satisfying. But it did lessen the emotional investment during first playthrough. This issue goes away almost entirely on subsequent playthroughs, which is why I strongly recommend playing it through twice before making a final judgment.

The second issue I had was that some of the characters felt underdeveloped - specifically Dina and Jesse. These were great, well-acted characters who both have awesome moments. But they don't feel as fleshed out as some of the characters in the first game. I think this issue comes from the fact that many of the best side characters in the first game (Tess, Bill, Henry/Sam) were only with us for a few chapters, whereas some side characters in TLoU2 are around for much longer. So they have the same amount of character development spread across more screen time, which can make their characters feel kind of watered down and less memorable than some of our favorites from the first game. To be clear, though, this was a MINOR issue.

Last story point: This may be just me, but my take is that the game ends in a cliffhanger. Not quite your traditional cliffhanger, but I definitely do not think this is the end of the journey for some of these characters.

Anyway, I highly recommend this game. Ignore the nonsense from the trolls and alt-right goobers who can't handle anything different. This is a fantastic game and absolutely worth playing. Enjoy!

The game has the best graphics of 2020 however the game is story driven and the story was lackluster and undeveloped with Joel and Ellie acting out of character. The character arcs and development have been completely forgotten. The game’s ending is a cliche “ending the cycle of revenge” however it is not done well. Do watch angry joe, jacksepticeye and others reviews of the game and decide for yourself. It is also very clear an agenda is being pushed with the game, this becomes the main charactaristic of the characters such as lev and undermines the potential those characters could have had, I believe that they should not have pushed an agenda in the game especially the one they did push down our throats and rather focused on making memorable characters. But the more I did the more I found out about the story, and the more I cared about the characters. I swear a bunch of underdeveloped prepubescent teens play this, and are immune to feelings. We got to see a whole other side of the story. Abby’s father straight up got murderer, so of course she wants revenge. Having to fight Ellie was insanely difficult as a player. I've never felt this way about a game before, I made a metacritic account just to share my thoughts.

The gameplay didn't change enough to feel significantly different, I understand that it's hard to innovate nowadays, but some elements feel unpolished to a level of being inexcusable. The rope mechanics are a nice addition, but it's literally the only thing that grabbed my attention,
in an industry where half life: alyx exists, this feels like a weak attempt to tell a story that a small isolated group thought would be "deep".
Sorry for bringing up half-life again, but this feels like if valve would have stopped innovating on their gameplay ideas for half life 2 in 2001-2002 and would have went on until 2004 polishing that game, bringing the unnecessarily dark atmosphere and lack of innovation from years before it actually got released.

I won't spoil anything for this game, but I have to say, having too dark of a story does exist, and this game demonstrates this very well. All the people who think that this adds deepness to the story simply overlook the flaws, then shout at anyone who points them out. If the story wasn't just a miserable boring mess, the game could be a 7 or even an 8 in my eyes.

Everyone talks about the story of the game. If it's good or not, if it make sense or not, the meaning behind it etc. I happen to be among the ones who at some points wasn't sure if I liked where the story was going, but then I absolutely loved it in the end. If it were a movie, it'd be one of my favorites.

Story aside, let's talk about ambiance and realism first: When I walked the streets of Seattle with Ellie, especially when she was on her own, I felt extremely on edge, because it felt so damn real to me. It's the most immersive game I ever played.

Most people would agree, that the graphics are great, but even though the graphics are absolutely amazing, they are only a cog in the wheel. What makes the ambiance of this game so real and immersive is also the sound, the enemy behavior, the way the protagonist interacts with their companion and the way the characters react to certain things. Then there's the level design, the way you feel like you can always go wherever you want, even though it's not an open world. You don't feel like you're trapped in a tunnel with only one way to go.

I usually try to search every area in a game, but in TLOU2 I decided to only go a certain route sometimes, because it felt more real to me. The game made me feel like I could explore more, but it would be a risk that might not be worth taking. Through this, in my head, the areas I went through felt huge and real.

Where there's graphics, there's details and design. The streets, buildings, nature, but especially every single room was so damn detailed. Every single room you go through, looks like a real room, where a real person lived in at some point. They all have their own character. I've never seen anything like it. And you just walk through them. You don't have to stop and admire all the details. You can't when you're on the run and the game doesn't expect you to do so. But it will blow your mind, when you go into photo mode and see how real the environment looks.

The cars look real, the vegetation looks real, hell even the damn garbage looks real.

And then there's the intense stealth and combat gameplay. The way enemies talk to each other and call out each others names, the fact they don't always walk in a straight line but look around etc. The transition between cutscenes and gameplay, the animations, the physics. I could go on and on, but in the end, you have to experience it yourself. In regards of immersion and ambiance, this game sets the bar.

    The Story

Alright, let's actually talk about the story though. No spoilers.

The story is dark, it is tragic, it's mature, it's unconventional, it's brutal. This is not your typical videogame story. It's a story about moral dilemma. It's emotional and you'll end up thinking about it and discussing it long after you played it. The characters aren't very quirky or anything, but they're extremely authentic. All the conversations seem very organic.

Then there's the cutscenes, the acting, the music: Absolutely phenomenal. Simply looking at a facial expression tells you so much about what that character is thinking. This impression is boosted by the details of the faces and facial animations.

To me, every twist and turn made perfect sense in the end.

    The Hate

People who couldn't stop themselves from learning all about the leaks and judged the whole game and its developers by it and joined the TLOU2-hate-circlejerk before even giving the game a chance: The creators haven't ruined your game, you have ruined it for yourself.

You made a choice to hate on the game, without even having played it. You judge the game by the spoilers and let other people tell you how to feel about it let them tell you how right you are being upset, but you haven't played it.

I feel Schadenfreude about everyone who's been utterly toxic, sending spoilers to others and sending hate messages to developers and voice actors. I'm glad you didn't buy the game and experience it. And if you do come around and buy the game one day when it's on sale, you'll be biased and you won't be able to enjoy it. You'll only play to nitpick and prove your point. Or maybe you'll end up secretly liking it or even loving it and you'll feel too ashamed to admit it and you'll feel like a dick for behaving the way you did. Either way, nothing comes close to the wonderful experience I had with this game, which is the best, most beautiful and impressive game I have ever played in my entire life.

To anyone who has played the game with an open mind and ended up not liking certain parts or even the whole story and are able to express themselves in a mature manner: I fully respect your opinion and I don't have any issues with you at all.

    Score

This game is a MUST-BUY. And dare I say the forbidden word: It's a masterpiece. Ignore the hate, experience it for yourself.

In case anyone googles my text: It's a compilation of some of my Reddit posts.

Objectively this game is a masterwork visually and audibly, and is a true testament to the ability of a studio that's dedicated to the highest of quality standards. Yet I am reluctant to say so in regards to the story. I do not believe it was poorly written nor do I think it was the mess so many other players claim it to be. It isn't as tightly structured as the last game bouncing from one person's perspective to another's rather quickly and also from one timeline to another just as fast. This is what makes its pacing a bit jumbled to some. I was able to follow right along with what I believe the author intended it to be, I'm just not that big a fan of the directions it took. There was clearly an agenda underneath the narrative that at times shines more brightly than at others. Which is fine that is the writers right to do so, I'm just not on board with it as much as they are. I do agree with those who say that certain characters acted out of their normal character like when Tommy and Joel went back to the lodge with Abby and began telling certain details to people they had no knowledge of. That was stupid plain and simple. And the way in which Joel died was shocking for shocks sake and very generic if you ask me. It could have been done far better. But the gameplay was solid and fun as hell and my god this world is so amazingly built it almost defies belief! I enjoyed the game thoroughly but was still a little disappointed with the way certain things turned out. I felt like the point was to paint Abby as the righteous new lead and Joel as the villain. And Ellie wasnt at all who she seemed to be in the first game. It's almost like they wanted to erase your love for the 1st characters to replace it with...? What? I'm not sure. But I would def recommend this game to anyone who like naughty dog games. It was a blast to play I just didn't get as emotionally invested like I did with the 1st one. Worth a playthrough or 2 for sure. Expand

The story and once beloved characters suffer from lazy writing, bad pacing and stupid plot holes...and once the credits have rolled, you don't feel satisfied in any way.

The game also overstays it's welcome, for which reason the gameplay just feels repetitive and boring after the 15-20hour mark. And the fact that I was forced to play as an other (uninteresting) character for such a long time, only added to this problem.

So, even though it breaks my heart to say this: I can not recommend this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the game, I didn’t like the game, it didn’t even feel like the same franchise as the first one. The first game shouldn’t have gotten a sequel in the first place but here we are. The whole game Ellie plows through hundreds to kill Abby but yet when she actually reaches Abby she doesn’t kill her? Why? To maintain her humanity? But she’s been killed so many people how could she save her humanity by sparing one person, who has also killed tons of people. Abby is poorly written character, I don’t hate her because she killed Joel or because shes buff, she’s boring at best. She’s a violent and sarcastic soldier who has a dark past ooh so original and true whole revenge is bad plot point was so dumb. OH did you know being selfish and killing purely out of self interest is bad??? EVERYONE KNOWS THAT. The game is so heavy handed and annoying it acts like it’s telling a story that’s better than it actually is. But I’m gonna be real, I didn’t completely hate the game, I like the graphics, the actors, and the music. The part exploring the downtown area to get gas was probably my favorite part of the game just because it was beautiful, has interesting dialogue every now and then, and had the Take on Me scene. Okay game but that’s all I can say for it. Not a masterpiece by a long shot. If you want to play a game with great graphics, actors, characters, and writing with a morally gray character then play red dead redemption 2, not The Last of Us 2 Expand

The Last Of Us Part II is a masterpiece, but not for everyone, the game contains the best graphics of the generation and a very nice gameplay to play, a soundtrack just like in the first game of the franchise very good, good but that it was already expected, a story of this game is very complex, and it will divide the opinion of its players, it is about revenge for both Ellie and Abby, just playing for a studied opinion, then PLAY !!!. I am the only game that is a double-edged sword, will be loved and hated ...

I waited seven years for this game to come out, hoping to continue the great story of Ellie and Joel....only to have Joel get bludgeoned not long into the game. On top of that, the pacing and timing of the game is horrendous. Having to play as Abby for an additional 10 hours once we basically got to Ellie’s end of the game was a terrible move. I beat the game on Moderate difficulty and then immediately played it again and beat it again, this time on Survivor+ (this game really ought to be played on Survivor, by the way).

In terms of gameplay, everything good about The Last of Us 1 has been improved. Combat is more varied, more excited, more tense, and much more brutal. Even for a seasoned gamer like myself, this combat made me stop and say "Oh my God!" a few times. It's just so intense - in a good way! There are fewer ladders, more areas to explore, and many more options as to how you take on your enemies. Also, new infected!

In terms of the story, it is of course hugely controversial. But I think it's tremendously well done. It's not as perfectly tight as the Last of Us 1 and there are a couple awkward jumps in timeline. But it's so ambitious and manages to make you think and feel things that few games before have ever even dared to try. For that alone, I think this game is deserving of special recognition. It has been a couple weeks since I beat the game for the second time and I'm still thinking about the characters, pondering their choices, wondering what they could or couldn't have done differently. This game really makes you care about the characters and their choices and makes you think about the costs of our actions in life. It's brilliant.

Like I said, the game is not perfect - there are some bugs that can be really distracting, and there are some oversights in the plot. But, all in all, this is easily one of the best games I have ever played in over twenty years of gaming. It is a worthy successor to an all-time great game, and stands alone as a masterpiece in its own right.

It's 'The Godfather Part 2' of video games.

This game blew me away from start to finish... I really have never felt so much emotion while playing a videogame. It was an incredible journey, different from everything I've experienced in all my gaming years.

It is really easy to hate this game, actually most of its runtime is basically you hating everything that's going on, and that's the whole point. The game forces you into a perpetual state of emotional claustrophobia that lingers all the way through the very (cathartic) ending, where you are able to understand what the story is trying to tell you, where you can "breathe" again. It goes way beyond the whole "revenge bad" thing a lot of people seem to take out of this game. I just felt incredibly provoked by its story, like the game wants to show you something you really don't want to see or you just don't care enough. But I personally like being provoked by any piece of media. I like trying to come to terms with something I don't care for, because most artists are only able to tell a certain story by annoying their audience, in a good way. It's like, you can only reach the true artistic value of said piece of media when you go through all of the stuff that the artist is trying to convey.

The Last of Us Part II is, by all means, an incredibly frustrating, depressing, sad journey about love. The love you have for these two characters, the love you have for your relatives, your friends, for your father, your mother, your brothers and sisters... It's almost sardonically fitting that this game came out in such a hateful time, in a time when people should stand by each other to defeat this really threatening virus, but instead we were never so apart. The United States are, currently, dominating the number of deaths and coronavirus cases, mainly because of one leader who was unable to unite his people. Although we are quarantined, that doesn't stop the systemic chain of racism and hate crimes, as we could see from the brutal murder of George Floyd by the police. This game came out in an absolutely hateful era, and it couldn't have come any other time. A provocative game for the worst of times. I think sometimes we must be provoked so we can learn to do better, we can learn what love, forgiveness and true art can do to ourselves and the ones around us.

That's why I love this game so much, it's easily become one of my favorites of all time. And I think everyone should play it for themselves! 10/10

No matter the pettiness of thousands of users that simply saw the leaks and already made up their minds, this game is not meant to please the player in the sense we are used to. Nor did the first game do that, let's be honest here, the ending was absolutely brutal in what seemed a perfect bitter sweet story.

The combat and the stealth in this game are easily one of the best out there. It's an absolute masterpiece in this regard.

Now people are mad about the story, but the game has a compelling and brilliant told story. It makes you see similarities from different points of views. You are forced to do things that get under your skin, but since the ending of the first game (at the very least) that has been the point of this series. You are initially resistant to play as others characters, but they grow, you begin to see how similar they are to the characters you love and are so mad about throughout it's gameplay.

It's a disruptive game. Unique, even. It is absolutely a must play.

Let it be known that most of the user reviews on here are from people that didn't actually play the game. They were just upset by a couple of leaks they saw, probably watched some YouTube videos trashing the game so they can feel justified, and review bombed this game.

This review is coming from someone who tried to not see any of the leaks and spoilers and decided to play the game with an open mind. Maybe the game will be good, maybe it'll be bad. Won't know until I play it.

The Last of Us Part 2's biggest flaw is that it's a video game. The combat is actually good. It's largely the same as the first game's combat so there's nothing innovative here, but they added some quality of life improvements and lots of layers of polish that it ends up being way more fun than the first game. There's lots of different ways to tackle a combat scenario and it accomodates people of different playstyles. Outside the combat though is when the game starts to dip in quality. The locations are big and beautiful... but they're also big. With no enemies. And constant looting and looking for supplies. There's way too much downtime in the game and it really ruins the pacing, which for a game that prides itself on telling a cinematic story, horrible pacing can ruin a lot of great stories.

Which is why I believe that if this story was a film, or better yet a TV series, it would've benefited more from the medium it's in. As much as I liked the combat, I dreaded the in-between sections where there wasn't story or combat. This is also a very linear story where the player can't change a character's choice, you have to just let it play out. So even if the story is REALLY good, I still have to go though 2 hours of walking around, bits of combat here and there to keep me from being bored, until I finally get to the next cutscene to see how the story plays out. This shouldn't have been a game. This story does not benefit from being a game (despite the actual "gamey" parts being really good).

Of course EVERYONE is critiquing the story more than anything. Which makes sense, Naughty Dog prides itself on linear storytelling in games to be as cinematic as possible. You SHOULD worry about whether or not the game has a good story. But most of the people critiquing the story either hasn't played the whole thing or made up their minds before playing and were close-minded the whole time. So is the story good? Or is it as bad as people say?

It's good. Not a masterpiece. Not very original (but let's not pretend the first game was). However, the execution of everything: the actors, the music, the writing. It's all A+. I respect Naughty Dog for taking risks and trying to tell a story that could upset fans. Because at the end of the day this story makes sense in the world the characters live in. "I don't like this new character that I play as." Really? Because this character is REALLY similar to a character you like in the first game. Literally has the same qualities. I was invested in the story the whole way through. There were certain characters that I hated at first, but over time I realized they're actually well written, fleshed out, three dimensional characters. This is a great cast. Telling the story out of chronological order could have backfired, but it's so well written that it actually works. So the game in my opinion is an 8. The combat is REALLY fun, the story is good, the graphics are beautiful as is the music. The attention to detail is mind-boggling. And no matter your opinion on whether or not the game is bad, praise MUST be given to Naughty Dog for all the accessibility options. This hopefully will become a standard in AAA games going forward. The game could've gotten a higher score from me if it wasn't for the horrible pacing, all the walking around and opening drawers just to collect tape and half pairs of scissors. The huge environments aren't beneficial to your game if there's nothing interesting about them; no matter how good the graphics are. Also the over abundance of safes.

Tl;dr: Combat good, story not as bad as people say, biggest flaw is walking around being bored.

This is just not our kind of game, it's like you are creating a game for your own, not for everyone, the gameplay is just quite similar from the last game, and the story is such a let down, this game is all about story only, so if the story bad and so is the game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am rating this game a 3 for the (1) acting, which is admittedly seller, (2) the graphics and audio which is second to none, the (3) effort that clearly went into creating the world of this game. Unfortunately, the compliments stop there. While the actual acting and some of the dialogue is good, the writing is absolutely atrocious. If you hated The Last Jedi and season 8 of Game Of Thrones, then you'll hate this game. The inane choice of killing off one of the main characters in the first 2 hours of this game is already ridiculous, but the incredibly disrespectful way this game treats that character is horrible. After that, I had no motivation whatsoever to keep playing, and this isn't even bringing up the later sex scene that is the most uncomfortable thing I've ever seen in my life. One last thing to mention is that the gameplay and controls have barely changed or improved from the first game, from 2013. Bottom line, don't buy this game if you cared at all about the first game, but maybe if you don't care about story and characters and only care about impressive graphics then this might do it for you. But frankly, this game is so overly long and frequently boring, even the graphics probably won't do it for you. Expand

I don't normally post reviews, but I had to for this. The amount of vitriol and hate for the story told in The Last of Us 2 shows us two things:

Firstly, that the majority of people who played it, completely missed the point of the story and the characters. These aren't just sprites on a computer screen, they're real living people with emotions and complicated drives.

Secondly, it shines a light on the unbelievable lack of empathy in our modern lives. People are just so unwilling to see the world from someone else's perspective that they're prepared to send death threats to actors who portray characters in a story. Shame on them.

Naughty Dog's storytelling in this game is just beyond anything I've ever played, and being a part of it makes it so much more connected than any film or a book. The emotion this story brings out in people (positive and negative) is so intense and raw that it leaves a huge mark. I don't know what more there is to ask from a piece of entertainment. This is the absolute pinnacle of gaming.

this game is one of the most amazing things I have ever had the pleasure of playing. The last of us touched my heart, and it will take me a long time to find something more shocking and emotional. This game is an experience, not a fanservice for fanboys of characters from the first game. It's about a post-apocalyptic world, about consequences, about choices and especially about showing the principles of each of the people who played. Like or dislike says a lot about who you are. I feel sorry for those who failed to appreciate TLOU Part II and especially for those who make themselves so unhappy seeing the reactions of the people they liked. Expand

Brilliant game. Don't know why it's being review bombed. Must be jealous xbox and pc fan boys who wish they had a game half this good. But if you enjoyed the first, you will like this. The story can be dividing for some, but I understand why they did it. It will make you think and challenge you. And in the end it is awesome.

The only good thing about this game is the gameplay and the graphics they ruined the last of us forever this storytelling was bad they killed the most beloved character and made the second most beloved character all alone and **** mentally and physically I get it they showed that revenge is bad and lev and **** abby are like joel and ellie and with killing abby you won't get joel back but abby did the exact things and had a happier ending than ellie the main character I loved the last of us 1 and I couldn't wait to play tlou 2 but they just ruined it they could do the best thing possible but they ruined it I mean they forced us to choke the character we love and care about . that's not how videogames work Expand

I’m pretty confused about all the “controversy” because this game has it all. It has a gripping story, very well written and complex characters, incredible gameplay. Beautiful environments. It’s an emotional roller coaster in the absolute best way! So much replayability and it’s such a satisfying length. You won’t regret picking this one up.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
