Anything that infuriates incels and homophobes this much deserves a 10. I can't wait until it wins GOTY and their heads explode.

With that being said, it's an absolute masterpiece. It'll be years into the next gen until we see another game on this level.

Ignore the review bombs from the neck beard crowd. The game is every bit as human, sad, and cautiously hopeful as the first. It tugs at your heart strings with a beautiful story, and it's worth every penny and more.

Bonus? The guitar mini game is dope

phenomenal writing, Amazing atmosphere & graphics, Perfect animations and voice acting, great gameplay and mechanics, perfect sound track by Gustavo Santaolalla.
I can understand why some people upset with the narrative, but unlike them i thought the narrative was mature, harsh, amazing and emotional - as it should be.
It's not a perfect game, But the emotional journey that it took me make it a 10/10.
I'll never forget it. Thank you Neil & Naughty Dog.

For one, I was only not a huge fan of the first game. I actively disliked the combat and stealth gameplay in the first game, even though I loved its story and world building and characters. The sequel, however, improves on almost every single aspect of the original game. It may be an evolution and not a revolution but everything is polished to perfection in a way that boggles the mind. The sequel made me care about the characters and the world in a new way. And it improves upon the stealth and combat so that it now is really fun to play, whereas I was really struggling to enjoy myself with the first game. The incredible sense of freedom in the stealth and combat scenarios allows for endless fun and variety. The visual presentation is stunning and the world is rich in life and detail. The ruined Seattle is an absolute joy to explore. The calm and beauteous moments complement the dark moments. The audio soundscape is perfect for ambiance and emotion. The story is epic and sprawling yet also focused and tight and perfect. I played the game on the highest difficulty "Survivor" (not recommended for the first playthrough, the game warns!) and that heightened the tension in a way that only made the game better for me. The fear of constant death and the brutality of those deaths, combined with the ability to nearly instantly restart an encounter, made for a unique experience. In short, the game pushes the boundaries of interactive media by marrying one of the best narratives ever told with one of the best gameplay systems. An incredible game. 10/10 Expand

So I’ll keep it brief and spoiler free: The Last of Us II is a game that dares to challenge players expectations, not only of what the story will be but in what you as the player will think and feel. I’ve really tried understanding the perspective of players who hated or disliked the whole experience strongly, but I just can’t get behind that. If you’re looking for a feel-good father daughter banter road trip, this ain’t it. And if you feel betrayed by anything this game presents you really should work on broadening your horizon or at least trying to get behind the creators intentions. For me this game celebrated the first part in every breath it took. Yes there we’re parts that dragged at first or felt eye rolling in the sense of “I see what you’re trying to do here Naughty Dog, but it won’t work”. But if your willing to hear the story out and try to get behind characters motivation and feelings, you’ll have one of the most enriching experiences in media as a whole of the last few years. For me it was the most profound and cathartic gaming experience I ever had. Expand

Technically and gameplay wise, this game is perfect! I didnt had any problems with script, i understood it. I understood motivations, i understood everyones actions.
Abby is great addition to the world and i hope we will see her and Lev again.
People who review bomb this game just because they are homophobes or because they would write script differently are jokes...
Everything made sense, even hero can become villian and you can start simpatize with former badguy. But every coin has two sides, remember that, not everything is black and white...

I steadily finished the game at 27 hours. I need to make a remark here: I am not against LGBT nor do I particularly adore it. We are all people, aren't we? I steadily finished the game at 27 hours. I need to make a remark here: I am not against LGBT nor do I particularly adore it. We are all people, aren't we? What I do not like is when instead of telling a story people try to attach some agenda to it and make it look like it was always there. In other words when it is not sincere. Now back to the game.
First thing that you notice is the graphics. It is clearly the best looking game of its generation. I don't need to tell you that at the same time it does not freeze and it does not have loading screens apart from initial one, though it takes a staggering amount of your hard drive.
Gameplay has evolved since the first game: you can dodge, brawl is more viable than in the first game. YOu can craft more things and instead of scarce manuals you have about 5 skill trees with 5 skills in it. All the skills are passive, but useful. Upgrading weapons looks really neat: all modernizations are visible and character performs them real life style.
The most controversial thing is game plot. I really tried to avoid spoilers before playthrough and actually managed to do it. Now, when I have finished the game, I have to say, that the plot is mostly good. The scenes are built in a way that you sometimes left hanging and wandering how this situation ends, but plot drives you through many events leading to this, showing you different perspectives before you see its end. It drives you mad, but in a good way, just like in crime novel when you see many interesting events, but still want to get to the end faster to find out what happens. That is definitely a good pacing and the most story complicated and diverse game for Naughty Dog. The bad thing here is that there are many chapters that you go through alone and it makes them somewhat tedious, because there are no dialogues, no inner dialogue, just silence and action/exploration. There is a reason for that, but it still looks like somewhat step back from first game where characters were always chatting about something.
I felt that the game is somewhat easier on the HARD difficulty, than the first game. Maybe I am just more experienced after beating the first Last of Us. Going back to the LGBT agenda I have to say that it surely does not take the central part of the plot, actually not even near. That is why it saddens me so much to see so many angry reviews where people refer to the game only as a lesbian-agenda-game. It is as if you say that Max Payne is only about f-ng subway. The important part for me is, going back to what I said in the beginning, here relationships are shown in sincere way. which is important for me.
Mostly I have to show respect to Neil Drukmann for making it a non-compromise second part of a two-part story instead of making a standard sequel, that we see every year in October-November.
I think, that most people would love the game, that is only if you are open to new experience, though if you want something particular and feel uncomfortable having something differ from what you expect, you might not be interested. Good luck to everyone reading this, hope you have a great day!

Let's start, the graphics are amazing, the gameplay is a huge step up (especially for melee and stealth), and the story is fantastic. A lot of people whining about the story are either upset about the LGBTQ+ aspects or they read spoilers with no context and were left enraged before playing the game. The Last of Us 2 is not the sequel I expected, but it is one that is true to its world and characters. The first game shows a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to get his job done, contrary to what Polygon thinks, the game is not about selfless actions or anything remotely about altruism. Joel has a mission, he became attached, and then he literally doomed the entire **** population because he didn't want to lose a daughter figure again. It is understandable, but also, if you came out not thinking Joel is a selfish man (albeit relatable) person, you didn't absorb the story properly and this game likely isn't for you as you entirely missed the point of the first one. Which you can see if you read Polygon's review, which honestly is an embarrassing review because the reviewer just blasted out that she played a game and didn't understand it even remotely. I think the hardest part of this game (for some) is that it really asks you to be a decent human who is capable of complex emotions and hopes that you can place yourself in the shoes of others while things are unfolding. It essentially asks that you go in with one motive and understand why you would possibly change that as events unfold and apparently that is asking too much for some 40,000+ losers review bombing the game. If you enjoyed the first game, play this with an open mind and don't become so attached to your own expectations that you get upset when the creators don't adhere to your every specification. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved this game. I would rate this game a 10, a 10 does not mean a perfect game. When the credits rolled, I clapped, but then stopped because I realized it was stupid (lol). Then i went to the internet, and It was so overwhelmingly negative, I was questioning If we just played the same game. But it's all a matter of perspective. How I feel/think/interpret is completely different from others. I'm still trying to learn to be ok with the hate this game gets, but to me it's become one of my favorite game of all time.

    Pros:
+ Overall gameplay - vastly improved over the original, feels clunky at first.. but you quickly adjust to it.

    + Graphics/ atmosphere/ sound/level design - a technical masterpiece.

+ Enemy A.I - One of the best and most dynamic enemies I've ever played against.

+ Ellie/ Abbie - both were interesting/ had interesting campaigns. Both were dynamic and unpredictable.

+ Overall story - It was good, without spoiling anything.. one of the most memorable endings.

+ Overall journey- A rollercoaster, that can't be explained unless you get on it. I laughed, almost cried, felt happy, genuinely smiled, felt scared, etc.

    So-So:

    * some side characters were under developed and felt unconsequential

    * They really did Joel dirty here. how it happened (the actual act). I'm ok with why it happened.

    Cons:

    - No multiplayer ( they stated no mp, but it's still my favorite mp).. will wait patiently for factions 2.

    - A few pacing issues ( This game had just as much pacing issues as the first game, but this game is also 10 hours longer). I think there were only 4 sections of the game I dreaded.

    - Very sad game.

To end, no game has me feel so many ranges of emotions in 30 hours. I loved it. The gameplay is dynamic, and always throws something new at you, it never feels stale. The story makes you feel for both sides, and it worked for me by the end. I didn't want ellie to kill abby, even though I cared less about abby even half way through her campaign. It just wasn't worth it in the end. Abby and lev also reminded me of joel and ellie. Basically I empathized with both ellie and abby. ND let us beat the **** out of abby in the end, I was satisfied, and would've been even if I didn't get to. I can honestly say this will be a divisive game, a lot of people will hate it.. but I can confidently defend this game because of MY experience. Masterpiece.

Oh yeah, I guess not being bias towards LBGT, not knowing who anita sarkeshian is, or caring about political agendas probably helped me enjoyed this game more.

I love Joel as a character and I was heartbroken when I saw that scene ( I wasn't spoiled ) but when you are like 70 or 80% into the game you can finally see the bigger picture and everything just clicks into place.

I respect the people who didn't like the risky path ND used to tell this story but nobody can deny that they had to balls to do it and deliver an experience of a lifetime. That last scene just gets me everytime.. I love Joel and Ellie together.

This game can really make you feel things whent you are playing it.. the pacing of course could be better on a few parts but overall this game is a huge achievement on the technical and the story telling level.

    This game is a masterpiece.

Ehmm, lets say: a rough plot from a leak is one thing. The way you develop it and the narration a completely different thing. Given the fact that this is where the game really shines, none of that can be judged after 3 hours.

So it all comes down to review bombing. And there are a lot of reasons that motivate it:

    - Story leaks that led to hasty judgments of the plot
    - Hate on Naughty Dog because of the restrictive policy in dealing with these leaks
    - Inability or displeasure in dealing with difficult issues or ways of storytelling
    - Political agendas about SJWS
    - Envy towards the PS and its exclusives

The reasons not to bomb the game would be millions. I let the numberless positive reviews stand for themselves. All is said about what a blast the game is in every way. Unfortunately it fell victim to an idiotic cyber mob that did explicitly not judge the quality of the game because 90% of them did not even play it ...

    I rate 10. After 2 playthroughs. Cheers

I wasn't a fan of the first one but this one really blew me away in all aspects of its design. It's hard to put into words all of the amazing aspects of this game because there are so many. Being a fan of zombie games, I felt this was one of the best zombie games I've played and definitely the best dystopian pandemic game I've played. All aspects of the game flow together so well to make an incredibly realistic and heartfelt experience. The gameplay and plot have a high level of contrast between calm, peaceful moments and highly intense, realistic shootouts between other survivors and infected. Because of this contrast, it makes the intensity even more jarring when it does ramp up. Likewise, when it slows down, you really appreciate the calmness and don't find it to be boring. The technical aspects of the game were superb and made it feel like a PS5 generation game. The visuals, the amount of detail, the lush environments, the water effects, the blades of grass, the great frame-rate, fast start up after death, the seamless transitions between cinematics and gameplay, and the seamless transitions between each large area of the game make this game a technical marvel as well as a visual marvel. The sound design is masterclass with certain music and sound cues at just the right time to highlight cinematic moments, the terrifying cries of infected, changes in weather, and the delivery of npc dialogue. The enemy AI is also top of its class with enemies acting very realistic and flanking you, or throwing explosive projectiles at you and working together to draw you out. The overall plot/story is very jarring and gives you a deep sense of grief, loss, tragedy, anger, sadness, hopeless, and helplessness which at first makes you question the quality of the game and message. The second time experiencing the narrative/plot, I appreciated it a lot more for what it was trying to convey and I think it nailed it. Without giving anything away, I think it really makes you think and feel strongly about giving into intense emotions and the outcomes of those emotions if acted upon. It may not be comfortable, full-filling, or enjoyable, but that is the point. And I think by designing the game like this, it makes the game more realistic and not just a simple black and white tale of vengeance and good versus evil. We get to see the overall picture to why things happened the way they did and not just a one sided view through the protagonist's view. The Last Of Us II is not an easy game to play. It's a game that challenges you in many different ways whether its through its gameplay, setting, characters, or in its narrative. Not everyone will appreciate it for this reason, but if you are looking for an experience that will challenge your view of right and wrong, question your intense emotions, and make you think/feel outside your own perspective, then this is one of those games that will make you do so. As well as transport you to a cruel and unforgiving world where humans act like wild animals and survival and protecting loved one's is everyone's top priority no matter what cost and loss of human civility. Realizing I wouldn't make it to them before they saw me I full on sprinted and killed them with a violent strike from my baseball bat. The enemy then took cover at the front of the car whilst my partner joined me at the trunk. Now being as this car was next to a wall i couldn't flank them to take a shot. So being boxed in i decided i'm just gonna jump on top of the car and rush them, honestly wasn't sure it was gonna work. So i mount the car and run towards them then Ellie straight up flying kicks this dude in the face and while he's still reeling she crushes his skull with her bat.
This is honestly the best combat AI i have ever experienced in a game. Every encounter is different depending on surroundings and dynamics. It really shines. I loved the first games story but i wasn't very impressed with the gameplay. This gameplay feels fast, frantic, desperate and realistic in all the best ways. Straight up loving it.

Yes the game is probably not for everyone, it is dark, it is gruelling and it makes some bold choices, but I am not sure what people expected... I am possibly in the minority in that I didn't see Joel as the villain at the end of TLoU, I think most people would protect the life of a loved one in any way possible in the same situation, but at the same time, he killed a lot of people and prevented the possibility of a cure.... there were always going to be reprecutions.

This game is the logical next step in the story, I think it would have been highly unrealistic if it had just been a new story with Joel and Ellie off on some new adventure.

The game is a genuine masterpiece of storytelling, and game development and deserves all the praise and sales it has gotten. Maybe it isn't for everyone and I feel almost sad for people that didn't enjoy as it really is so brilliant, but then there are highly rated games I did not enjoy so each to their own!

My respect to Neil Druckmann who has crafted a complex and intricate narrative within a medium that he changed 7 years ago with the first game. The central theme of the game is the endless cycle of violence. A disease that we humans have been victims of for thousands of years. If the first game is about love and care for one another, this one is about revenge and the terrible consequences that it brings. I have seen a lot of biased opinions towards the story and I say biased because of the people who criticized the leaks instead of playing the actual game. The game is constructed from the perspective of two central characters Ellie and Abby, (yes, not Joel, get over it) two sides of the same coin, through which we can see the horror of the post-outbreak world. I'm not trying to convince people who disliked it that this is a masterpiece for the ages. It's pointless arguing and it says a lot about you if you are unable to understand what the game is trying to tell you. I am writing this to show appreciation towards Neil Druckmann and the Naughty Dog Team who deserve it and have given us so much. And all I want to say to you Neil is: From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. I'll be forever changed by this experience and I hope that someday I can create just a bit of what you have done with these two games.

So here´s an actual honest opinion. I just finished the game. And pretty much it's impossible for anyone to have finished it in just 24h. A long side the main story the game has several side content for you to explore. So if you do that not only is it an enjoyable experience but also it will take you longer to finish. What I can tell you right away is that only after the first hours of the game I not only got hooked but It became clear to me how talented Naughty Dog is at world building, storytelling and at gameplay. You need to play this to understand how detailed and deep the game is. But still if you really are on the fence, go watch some actual early gameplay videos that will allow you to understand what the game is all about. You'll see that the game is much better than what 11000 people claim to be only after the first 24h. Open your mind people. You built your own perception of what the sequel should be without even giving it a fair chance. It is because of how you are abusing the Metacritic system that it stops being useful for consumers that actual want a real impression on the product. Metacritic the way I see it you need to start asking for proof that a person actually bough the product in order to submit reviews. Anyway. If you finished the game and didn't like it I respect your opinion. But for me this is a groundbreaking game. One of the first or at least most impactful tragic game story. This is what people dont understand. They ask developers to be more original and when they do it they're criticized for doing it. Let me put it this way . People who love this game will forever hate it. And thats what is so good about it. Welcome to tragedy in video games. Thank you for having the courage to do it Naughty Dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've finished the game recently and finally gave in to the realization it was a waste of time. I kept looking for arguments in it's favor. I've talked a lot about with my partner. Still, the lesson I learned from the game is that I shouldn't have played it. I won't describe the plot itself but only rant about the grand design of it.

The processes it triggered in me are not positive or aiming to improve me as a person. Nor did I have fun playing it which kind is the point of a game. I felt like Sisif pushing this boulder of sadness further and further only to fall back to my knees as my hopes of a deeper and better meaning got crushed by the next character's decision. I wanted to stop during the game multiple times because I understood where it was heading. I only finished it because I figured it was only fair if I wanted to express an opinion about it.

While I started with affection towards the world and the characters I ended up hating everyone equally as it all turns into a brutal descent into madness. Honestly I hope they won't make a part 3 as I can't see myself touching any of these characters again. How can one love characters who's only scope of existence is death and murder? And why would you build characters up just to reduce them to this in the end? They killed Joel, a character whose actions made me question myself in his situation, who had a drive and a final hard choice to face. Why make it useless? What would he have thought about everything to unfold after? These characters seem to have not played the first game and got nothing from what the first game made me thing about.

Even more then the world I hated the game for not allowing any kind of choices. I waited in a blocked scene with the "Strike" prompt on screen for half an hour still hoping. But no, the descent must be total and brutal and useless and senseless. And the trivial fact is that it repeats all over. The game gives you the feeling something is about to change, some character seems to understand the crossing of a line and then it rolls back into the same action pattern from 3 chapters ago. That makes it so heard to buy into it. The suspension of disbelief turns into the stupor of understanding it's all fake as the characters stay the same and don't evaluate, don't build, don't progress and we are forced to witness their mistakes over and over again towards a perfectly clear cliche ending.

I get that games should pull us out from our comfort zone and make us contemplate the actions and the reasons behind actions, but it needs to have meaning. In here it was just gratuitous because of the ending. If the focus were to say loud and clearly "An eye for eye and the whole world goes blind" it failed miserably by not committing fully to it. The whole game the only language the characters can speak is "murder" and at the end we have a sudden change of heart? Really? Also, we expect from games to feed our fantasies, give us a glimpse into being heroes and better, to be a better reflection of reality.

So if you got so far you probably wonder, why a 10? I've really thought this trough. Truth is it's just like Joel said, If I were given a second chance I would do it exactly the same all over again. I've pictured if something like this would happen to someone I loved in real life. In games we are all valiant and honorable, and see the grander picture, but shift that to real life. Yes, I believe there won't be any more uncross-able lines, there won't be limits and the world would go blind. Is this the real nature of trauma? To break us into pieces and reduce us to nothing but grief and predatory instincts? I don't know but it feels real. The game reminded me of Frank Herbert's White Plague novel, which I loved. So I think I love this game too, but it's hard to love what shines a light on our darker selves and breaks our self-perceived illusions. How many games do you know to do manage to achieve this?

What would you have done if you were Ellie or Abby, in real life?

"If I ever were to lose you, I'd surely lose myself". Un grand jeu video, que dis-je, une grande oeuvre, 10/10

I personally think that those who hate TLOU P2 in general didn't playes at all, they just saw some leaks and make conclusion that this game is about subverting expectations and disrespect to the original game, but they were wrong, this game is good, and it was made by those people who very love Joel and other characters, Troy Baker personally argue with Neil Druckman about this "golf club scene" and in the and even he realised how good, and sad, and very important this story is, this story not classic story about protagonist who won all enemies, in this game you actually never find classic protagonist, but in the end of this story you will understand that this game is much more than the other many good games wich released in this year exactly because of this story. 10/10 best graphics on this generation, best world building, best action and steals gameplay, great art direction and again the best storytelling in this year. PS: you don't have to love this game, but do yourself a favour and play in TLOU P2 at the beginning and in the end, and only after this come here and say your opinion about this game. Expand

One of the best stories ever told in video games. I avoided all leaks and most media about this game and the experience was worth it. Everything about The Last of Us 2 is done incredibly well-- the story, graphics, gameplay, acting, music, environments, etc. The story requires a deep amount of empathy from its audience, and it challenges the player in ways not usually seen in this medium. One of the best stories ever told in video games. It's a brutal game. It's tough in many different ways. But I am blown away at what a great job the entire team at Naughty Dog did with this sequel. The story retroactively makes the first game an even stronger title, because the story of the two of them is one of the strongest narratives in gaming history. An absolute masterpiece.

Immersive ambiance, engaging game-play, solid story (though at some points questionable).
Game definitely deserves a recommendation as an interactive piece of art, and as a high quality thriller.

Best game I've played in years, totally immersive story, terrifying, absolute loved it. Playing this because I loved the first game but this takes it to a whole new level in terms of playability, variation situations and just all round imagination. Oh and obviously ignore the sad sack incels giving it zero.

The story is amazing, continues on the dark themes of the past game, is on movie like quality story telling, amazing direction and surpasses the first game. This game also pays homage to the first game, where certain events carry over. Also great refinements over the first game. Definitely game of 2020 and possibly game of the generation/decade/century.

Nobody can enjoy that, it's sad and people get hurt and there are very rare if any uplifting moments, its a very dark and depressing tone. It somewhat reminds me of Ran by Kurosawa. ¿Is it a depressing and sad film were people die left and right in random ways? Sure, but it is still a masterpiece at representing desperation and grief. This game makes an objective of making you feel bad and in that objective it is very succesful. A story can be good, with good characters and not enjoyable given its tone. I think the director took a risk and told a devisive story and for me it worked. People were expecting a game similar to the original and this is not it. It is still great though and it will keep you thinking about the consequences of your actions. In terms of feel the closer I can think of is spec ops the line, it has an oppresive atmosfere. I think this is a masterpiece and game of the year for me. Expand

The graphics, setting are right in line with ND's stellar trajectory for ever improving graphical fidelity, year after year. And the gameplay fleshes out TLOU 1st game's foundation, though in some respects, doesn't pushing into groundbreaking territory with the sequel. Still, if you enjoyed the stealth, crafting, combat mechanics and gunplay of the first...there should be plenty to love in TLOU 2. The story, honestly, is harsh....yes....but very fair....and very brave, if you ask me. It is a natural extension of what was started in the 1st game, if one can simply detach from unreasonable expectations garnered in everyone's love for Ellie and Joel's character. At the end of TLOU, Joel's decision plays out as a heart-wrenching one of a loving father figure. But only in as such as we get the narrowest of keyhole views into that decision. TLOU 2 allow the full consequences of that decision to bloom. And as heartfelt/heart-wrenching as that decision was....it was also a devastating decision....a selfish tribal-driven decision (understandable, tho! Saying this as a father of 2 girls myself) which breeds and weaves the ugliness of tribalism into the brutal story of TLOU2. Looking back from as detached a perspective as I can muster, the story is true to the heart of TLOU. Druckmann and co must have known he/they would be harshly criticized for their decision to tell that story. Kudos to you, good sir. Brave choice! Expand

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
