Naughty dogs delivers another gem... Environment is very detailed, and minor world details, emotions on characters faces are shown to perfection.
Game is not for kids, its for grown ups who can digest cruel world of TLOU. Graphics and game play is flawless.
Zombie encounters are exhilarating and human encounters are equally exhausting.
Truly a master piece... Cant wait to replay it in PS5.

The game is a masterpiece. Do not listen to anyone, just play for yourself, and you will understand that the story is rather difficult and sad, sometimes unexpected, but worthy of attention. Undoubtedly, I would like to see some points differently, but Neil is therefore (at least for me) an exemplary screenwriter, because he does his work without looking at someone else's opinion, that is, reflects his vision.

If you are one of the many on this site that appear to have provided a score to this game before completing the experience, I strongly encourage you to see it through to the end and take some time to reflect on the experience before sharing your thoughts. Aside from the story, the technical achievements of the game objectively are improvements over what was offered in Part I- gameplay mechanics, environments, visuals, sound, and acting (facial animations are insane), and enemy AI. To sum up my take on this game, I experienced a necessary, satisfying, and compelling continuation of the story provided in Part I. I cannot imagine a more fitting continuation of the story, and I recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed Part I. Expand

The visuals are by far the best i've seen on any console game, and the level design/locations are built very well. The AI feels like it belongs in a game from 2014, and the secondary main character moves like a GTA IV character. The gameplay feels like its half a decade old, disappointingly the moments you find yourself actually feeling challenged and enjoying an encounter usually turn out to be entirely scripted, meaning you spend 20 minutes fighting a "mini boss" just to realize the only reason the encounter was difficult at all is because you are meant to lose regardless of how you perform. doesn't exactly feel rewarding to find out you would've gotten the same ending to a fight if you didnt touch your controller and let the monster beat you in 3 seconds. All in all this game is a massive disappointment to anyone expecting a true attempt to continue the beloved story, this game shouldn't even be considered TLOU2, its essentially a new IP that reuses assets, names and voice actors. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us — Part II is the most profoundly human, viscerally violent, lachrymose game I have ever played. It is tied together with beautiful graphics, immersive gameplay, and a stellar soundtrack. In my life, few games have caused me to reflect so deeply on the motivations of characters, and displayed such realism depicting their deaths. It is as controversial as it is beloved, but I will express why, in my opinion, this game is so noteworthy.

While The Last of Us struggled somewhat with lackluster gameplay, it’s sequel corrects all the original’s shortcomings. While some gameplay aspects remain, such as the scavenging and required stealth, many things have been adjusted and tweaked for a better overall experience. Combat is more fluid and responsive, with breathtaking animation for all the characters that adds to the immersion. A few mechanics have been added, including the ability to prone. This new ability allows you to hide under gaps in buildings and military trucks, amongst other things. Another new addition is a dedicated doge button. When fully mastered, players can dodge and counter an enemy’s attack, cause devastating blows which add a sense of desperation to each attack. The most notable tweak, however, is the shooting mechanic. Shooting now feels more refined, and hit and kill indicators have been added. As a whole, where the gameplay felt repetitive in the original, it now feels more fully realized, refined, and mature; it’s been polished with a shiny, new veneer.

Moving on, what would this game be without a good narrative? As always, Naughty Dog displays their masterful story telling. Once again, you’re introduced to Ellie, who is now older and more mature. In contrast to the first game, you now play as her through the majority of the game. She has settled into a semi-idealistic lifestyle in Jackson. Though she retains some of her iconic cheerful, quirky banter, you find that she’s grown into a quieter, more reserved adult (perhaps from her emotional traumas). Halfway through the game, you learn it is a story told in parallels between Ellie and her counterpart, Abby.

Abby is similar to Ellie in almost all regards. Like Ellie, she is a survivor hellbent on revenge. Robbed of someone once close to her, she would sacrifice anything to avenge their murder, and she does. It is this act of revenge that propels the story onwards; and brings Ellie to her hometown of Seattle, Washington. Here, the two eventually battle one another. Because of their similarities, their fight is extremely painful to watch — and even more painful to play through.

Sadly, both characters have wonderful character traits; even sadder, they both have abysmal flaws. Both characters are extremely loyal to their loved ones to a fault — literally, as both go to great lengths
to avenge the murders of their respective loved ones. Ellie’s biggest flaw stems from the guilt of being “saved” by Joel. Her counterpart’s stems from the devastation of losing loved ones. Throughout the game, countless lives are lost in seemingly pointless deaths. The dark reality of these deaths is that they’re caused by the shared blind loyalty both characters have. It is simultaneously their greatest strength and their greatest flaw. It is, as established in the previous game, the same corrupt love that propelled Joel’s selfish decision to save Ellie (blinding him to all the countless lives that would be lost). Overall, it’s story carefully tackles heavy themes of revenge, hatred, and the intoxicatingly self-destructive nature of violence. In conclusion, this is, arguably, the most thought-provoking game ever made. With new polished gameplay mechanics, it feels like the older brother to its predecessor. Its story constantly challenges its player to question motives, to abhor the violence its player is committing, and to challenge the desensitized nature of violence in video games. It is a game that stays with you long after you finish it, and it has enough replay value for you to play multiple times. In conclusion, this game is a masterpiece chalk full of Naughty Dog’s artistry and attention to detail both in fidelity and moral ambiguity. It’s story is as tragic as it is brutal, and it is an immaculate vision executed with near perfection; a truly worthy sequel.

I never thought I'd see so much hate levied at this game which at first glance seems like evangelical-conservative-sovereign-citizen-kryptonite with almost every element being anathema to that world view but I think that's incidental to the random hate.

It seems like in every comment I see about this game's ending that the people who hate it understand the ending, they just flatly refuse to accept it. This game constantly flies directly against US revenge culture which has always clashed heavily with Jesus's concept of forgiveness.

This is why they don't offer a meaningful rebuttal to the message of this game, they just pick it apart like the babies picked apart The Last Jedi or Empire Strikes Back when they came out. The actual reaction to this game is what makes it a masterpiece more than the story itself.

Second, those upset over Ellie being a lesbian its clear you are lonely and miserable exhibiting rage over a fictional characters sexual preference...its sad, pathetic really. Keep in mind it is you who are the snowflakes. I'd like to thank Naughty Dog for a game which they clearly put their all into it. I'm only 9 hours in but felt compelled to put a review in due to the nonsense here on metacritic which is a display of ignorance. The graphics, story, dialogue, music and gameplay are exceptional and improve on what was excellence in the first game. The characters communicate throughout giving a better sense of who they are and where they've come from. Anybody who played the first and enjoyed it surely will love this game...of course that's said if your manhood isn't affected by the lesbian presence which is not at all shoved down the players throat as I've read in some of these small people's reviews. A narrow mind is laughable and also explains why many on here are lonely and probably miserable. I'm stunned in 2020 that you all made this "political", but I'm not surprised. Anyway... this game is phenomenal and to buy into a snowflake narrative would be your loss if these opinions do in fact dissuade you from purchasing this game. Character development is top notch..and humanity is on display moreso than part 1. The story can be ugly, but aren't we. It is what people are and if you can't handle the brutality and emotion its not a title for you. The environments are steps above the original and the music sets the tone. Reactions in characters us the best gaming has to offer...as is the dialogue which is to say well written. Only 9 hours in and yeah, this is your game of the year. Thanks again Naughty Dog fir attention to detail in the form of broken glass crunching under Ellie's feet and setting the atmosphere with the proper gloom. I'm 100% satisfied. I am going to try and explain the truth around the disparity between user-score and review scores by the simple fact - the game was too popular and big to be made into the monster it turned out to be and that is too difficult for many to swallow or perhaps even comprehend the complexity this game presents.
for example imagine the first game as an avengers movie and this one being there will be blood. both are excellent however to make that transition from one to the other with the same characters is for the few not for the many.
I think naughty dog would knew the reception it would get and I am glad they stuck by it. If you are reading this and going to play it for the first time, one big recommendation- go in with a fresh mind, persevere and by the end you I hope you will see the light at the end of tunnel just like I did.

So this is a REAL review on this game. English is a second language so it might feel a little clunky.

First of all I just wanna say that the bad reviews on this game have two base types:
    1) Troll ones, easy to spot, usually the person says something like "great movie, bad gameplay".
    2) Real ones, usually of people mad at the story, this person will say something like "awesome gameplay, nice graphics, good soundtrack, awful storytelling".

So now for the review, there's a difference between storytelling and story. Storytelling has to do with how the story is told, with which steps the production take to make something believable, good storytelling make a world concise. For example, it would be bad storytelling if Ellie would have found a dwarf in the middle of the game, a dwarf that would tell her how aliens came to Earth thousands of years before Christ and planned that whole zombie thingy. Now, this is bad storytelling, it would make TLOU universe inconsistent, there was no building to this.

    {THIS PART CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS}

Now was there really no building to what happens in this game? You kill hundreds of guys, decide that a cure won't be made just so that you keep the person you love by your side and then you really believe that your actions won't cast a raging spirit? Joel's thing wasn't too rushed, it's many years late in the TLOU universe. From the moment he lost his "first" daughter and escaped with life his death was being postponed. Did you cry, did you feel an indescribable rage through that woman? Did you get yourself lost in the game? Did you feel like you couldn't stop playing until all that was solved? If you did, the storytelling is alright.

People wanted to play TLOU 1 again, a new version of the story of bonding between a parent figure and its child. What they got was the second part of a brute and cruel story.

If you are somewhat mature you will like the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is phenomenal. Not as good as the first but sequels coming off a game that good rarely are. The characters and world are as detailed as ever and making loving or hating them feel so impactful. I was almost certain the game would start with Joel being killed, considering who he was and the consequences of the choices he made in the first game, and through his 20 years of survival. His death was harsh and sudden, fitting the bleak grounded tone of the previous game, and the lifestyle he thought he might outrun. It portrays his acceptance of the consequence well, showing the final piece of his arch that he knew he was getting what he deserved. So it was tough, but set the rest of the game in motion. Ellie's fall from grace is a hot topic of debate but it makes sense to me. She was always troubled by survival, and needing meaning in her immunity. Chasing Joel's killer, as well as the relationships strained along the way, was a strong story of coming to terms with being a villian, just as the fjrst game was. I think people forgot at the end of the day she's been with Joel, a true villian, for a while mow, and they shouldn't have been surprised she took on his world view. Regardless, the writing is great, the acting even greater, and the graphics prove ND still knows to inch every ounce of horsepower out of this gens PS. It's a hell of a ride, but one worth taking. It'll hurt, its not always perfect, but its so damn good. Expand

It plays with the concept of perspective in the characters, to develop certain empathy but also necessary distance. And in the end you understand all the motivations behind it all because the script fits perfectly into its 4 acts. It really moved me much more than the first one, apart from being much more plausible and spun. For example, here I find more convincing reasons to kill an enemy than I had in the first game. I really feel like this universe is built in a more adult way. Even in certain issues like the characters looking away when we try to get close to them with the camera is a sign that their lives belong to them, like for example in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, where we are one of the voices handling Senua and he looks away from our excessive control. Their lives are theirs. And that's why at certain times the decisions are feared by them and not by us. The Last of Us 2 is probably the best video game I've ever played. Expand

The importance of not blaming anyone and if you change the perspective to assess the facts that led you to do such actions. A magnificent round 10.

Very few stories in any type of format can deliver such emotional blows one after the other and yet still somehow make you want to continue.

This game is about violence, about actions with severe consequences, about forgiveness, loss, pain, unfairness, cruelty and a shattered heart.

    Please enjoy.

I really don't give a crap about internet emo's demand to craft a game based on their preference

This can be the best game of the generation, animation, physics, graphic, and gore are top notch. You will never feel a gun shot & arrow kill so impactful in any game. story is very interesting, as long as you aren't one of those emo tards who act like Joel is their biologic father.

It astounds me that anyone who's played this game could give it less than an 8. The story is phenomenal. I can't emphasis how much more this game delivers on an emotional level than its predecessor. The game-play is tight and incredibly tense and this game raises more questions then it could possibly answer. Anyone who read the links robbed themselves of an incredible experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What the reviews for this game show is that we have a pandemic among the human population due to a lack of basic empathy for others. Ellie and Joel are not your creations. You may have been happier to have had another cross country trail with the two of them however instead you were provided with a truly unique experience. You were forced to realise that everyone has their own story and why they act the way they do instead of the usual dumbed down good and evil dynamic. This game was lost on you and to be honest a lot of life will be also. It was a devastating ending which was heartbreaking. It wasn’t happy however there remains hope that both characters can find happiness in a world which has really gone to **** Revenge is poisonous and cost both these characters a heavy price. I’m thankful for the experience. Naughty Dog own these characters and created them and I trust them with the narrative. Not some whiney clowns who want to be spoon fed artificial grief but always with a happy ending in conclusion. Grow up. Expand

For all the bad user reviews, the game still is one of the best made on the PS4. The plot was fitting, as well as every bit as good (and excruciating) as TLOU1. The gameplay was immersive and downright fun. If you have problems with people who are different from you, then that's really your own problem (not one with the game).

All because they do not like an homosexual character which is actually one of the most brave and strong characters I ever played with, a resolve like Ripley of alien. People hate it because Joel dies, because the antagonistic is not likeable or for anything the game ends up with. Not sure why as I haven't ended the game and the 10 is to balance out other reviews with a 0. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
