This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm very sad to write this review. I ignored the review bombing in hopes that it was just angry fans stirring up trouble as they always do.

I'm going to start with the fact that people think people that are angry are just mad because of the LGBT references... The Last of Us: Left Behind introduced Ellie as gay, and it scored very well. Most people don't care about a character's sexual orientation, as long as the story is good. With that being said, the LGBT part of the story did seem to be "in my face" a lot, and made me want to say, "Yeah I get it, they are in love, cool. Get back to the story.", but I liked both Ellie and Dina.

The action/graphics in the game were very well done, there is no argument towards the technical aspect of this game being done well, that is the only reason why this review has a 1 and no a flat-out 0 though, I have to admit.

After that, this is where the positive/neutral things end. The entire point of the first game was looking for the cure, there has to be a cure. It was a good story developing Joel and Ellie as a "family" and developing their characters.

This story basically "forgot" everything that had happened in the first game, and ignored all of the development of Joel altogether. He was a very cautious person and didn't trust anyone, and in the second game this was thrown out of the window.

Abby kills Joel very early in the game, and it's unknown why, until you find out that the little girl that Joel saved in the first game was Abby, and she kills him because he killed her Dad, the doctor.

There is a point as well where you play as Abby, because it wants you to relate to her character, and I have to be honest, the moment she killed Joel she was no longer an interesting character, she was the antagonist. You're not going to make me relate with a character by trying to show their human side, after they kill the character that you've grown to love throughout the first game. I'm on Joel and Ellie's side, no matter who has to die.
After this, you have this entire drawn out story where Ellie murders everyone in her path to get to Abby for revenge, and then develop the relationship between her and Dina throughout this story, all for nothing.

Ellie kills Abby's friends, Abby kills Jessie, and after all of this... After all of the killing and fighting, at the end of the game, Dina tells Ellie not to leave, and Ellie leaves anyway to go find Abby. You have a long drawn out fight with Abby, and then Ellie lets Abby go.

All of the people that died in the game, was for nothing. All of the development between Ellie and Dina was for nothing. Abby leaves, Ellie loses her guitar playing fingers, Dina leaves, and Ellie is alone. They threw it all away at the end for what? To make you want a third game? I am not confident in Naughty Dog's ability to do anything except make a game that is technically good with scenery and action at this point.

The only thing that this game has done was disappoint me in Naughty Dog's ability to write a compelling story to keep me engaged, and it's very obvious that they struggle at "closing" a story that they were trying to make. If there would have been some type of closure, it would have been a better ending. Instead, they just left it as a cliffhanger, and made the entire game you just fought through felt like it was a hopeless waste of time.

What was the point anyway? Abby kills Joel, You kill everyone to get to Abby, Dina leaves you, and you don't even kill Abby. The ending is: Ellie loses everything, and you don't really have anything resolved other than you know why Abby killed Joel. There is no closure.

As a final note, the reason for the bad review is not BECAUSE Joel died. It's because of the way that the story was told. It was written and done early for shock value, and then they tried to piece together the reasoning afterwards. There are many games where main characters die, and it's done in a way to really make you love the game. This is not one of them. If they would have told Abby's story beforehand and let us grow to like the character, and let us understand her motives, in order to lead up to a climax where she kills Joel and we understand why she did it, then that would have worked much better. But instead, they chose to go for "shock value" points and it hurt the story a lot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is just so bad overall. You killed off the beloved relationship we all loved in the first game. You false advertised and deceived us into thinking Joel was going to be around or that we’d only play as Ellie. Gameplay is the same as before except now it feels only tedious, maybe a little crack in the wall is what’s different. And a terrible ending, everything Joel and Ellie endured and all for what? NOTHING?! Ellie loses everything and Abby just walks away. I’ve waited years upon years for this, and this is what I get in return. I rate it a 1 because at least the game runs and can function. I tried to play this game as non-biased as possible. But with all my desire, I did not succeed.
If without spoilers, the game is very beautiful and dark. It has very good musical accompaniment. A lot of new mechanics, so compared to the first part of the game has become more lively, but the plot destroys everything.

There are no good or bad people, only survivors, capable of the worst acts but also of some beautiful ones.
Although some decisions taken by the characters may be hard to accept or agree with, the full story goes beyond them, showing that the way of ending the cycles of violence comes with a great cost, forgiveness.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is different and feels deep. This game is unique in its very own and has given me an impression that I have never actually gotten from any other game. In such an apocalypse, madness is a thing and therefore fear, sorrow, indefinite loss and revenge definitely has its place. Not everything is smooth in reality and things can hurt sometimes. Joel killed so many people to save Ellie in the first part, and that is okay for you haters??? This game proves that everything has its consequences, no matter how painful they are. The leaks spoiled this game. If you read the leaks and that say the game is bad without playing it, you will never get the meant to be experience. It is just like, if you knew Iron-man was going to die in End Game beforehand, you would most likely hated the movie, easily hated it. And that's because you loved him. But since you watched the movie and let the movie lead you to it, you felt it and understood it. Same here. So this game is a must play, and deserves a chance to be understood. If you saw some description of a scene from a leak and say that you can't face it, I have nothing else but to say that you are a **** in front of reality. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely incredible. That’s the only way I can describe this game. It provides a nuanced and thought provoking continuation of the first game’s ending that leaves players pondering the story for days. The sad truth of the story is that it revolves around Joel’s fateful decision to give Ellie a chance at life, but the way he did it basically makes it impossible for Ellie to find happiness. Every action has a consequence, and Joel’s atrocities against the fireflies ends up coming back to bite Ellie. At the end of the day, the game feels like you’re playing in an alternate reality where Joel made the wrong decision. The correct series of events seems to end with Ellie dying on the operating table and saving the world, but not all things have happy endings. To say that the characters didn’t progress well through this story is a flat out lie, because this story thoroughly felt like the place that the characters would naturally end up. Overall, it would be most fitting to package both games as a single story, because both feel so essential to each other. PLAY THIS GAME. It’ll make you feel like crap, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game... it means it’s making you think. And that, my friends, is what all media should strive to do. Bravo Naughty Dog. Can’t wait to see what new IP or sequel you bake up next. Expand

Never has a game come out with this many gamers missing the mark of the story. It's very to sad to see how many people didn't actually even realize what this story was trying to ultimately convey about the cycle of violence. The game shows the impact one act of violence can have and the domino effect it creates. Not some generic revenge story with a perfect good guy wins resolution. Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey both deliver excellent performances alongside a great script and story. Gameplay is brutal and crunchy making the player feel every gun shot and every swing of Ellie's knife. Gameplay is mixed up with the player taking on the game from a Abbys perspective showing a different perspective of the story. With the game originally creating a strong hate for Abby, over your time with her you start to understand and sympathize her as a character understanding that her motivations and experiences aren’t that different than Ellie‘s. This proved to be a great addition showing how non black and white the story is. Makes you rethink everything you thought you knew and makes you question between what's right and what's wrong and more importantly who's in the right and wrong in this situation, Ellie or Abby? That is the question that many gamers will be asking themselves well playing, and it's not a easy one to answer, even though at first it may seem to be. The Last of Us Part 2 is not a game that many will understand or appreciate. It's not a story everyone will enjoy not necessarily because it is bad, but because it requires the player to look into the story critically, being open minded, sometimes putting emotion to the side to better understand the actions of the characters and their motivations, and even trying to put yourself in the shoes of both Abby and Ellie to better grasp their thinking/headspace. Overall The Last of Us Part 2 is a masterfully crafted game with a incredibly in depth and mind provoking story. I beg anyone to try the game for themselves before making up their mind as I'm sure it will be worth your while. Expand

Ellis sexuality was fine to each there own I’m glad the devs took a bold action but the games ending was just bad Abby was a horrible character with no redemption. So many other games have done the “ killing you won’t change anything” trope much better also if the message is revenge is not good then don’t make me play a character like Abby who constantly talks about other survivors as savages who deserve what they get. I LOVED this game. I laughed, I cried, I sweated, I was pissed off and I felt EXHAUSTED by the end of this campaign. The feeling this game left me was depressing but thats how it should be. To all the so called Last of us "fans" who had a problem with the story, I recommend you go back and replay the first one. "The Last of Us" is not a single narrative nor just a survival zombie game. It has always been parallel stories of Man vs Man and the branching repercussions of ones actions. The humility and struggles of being a human in a world that is cruel and punishing has always been at the core of The Last of Us. Part two elevates this concept by putting you in the shoes of another person trying to cope in this complex and mentally taxing world. I can understand why people had a hard time liking this game due to the character you play as but I genuinely believe that if you did not understand why Naughty Dog went the direction they did, then you never understood the first game to begin with. A cruel world creates cruel stories. Now I'm not saying this a perfect game, but for people to write this game off with a 0/10 without logically reinforcing their opinions is sad and speaks volumes about the gaming community as a whole. Reading some of these reviews has lost me a few IQ points. Naughty Dog, thank you for bringing a nuanced and thought provoking sequel into the cultural zeitgeist. If you can sift through the thousands of nonsensical reviews you'll be sure to find people who honestly took the time to play the game whether they hated it or loved it.

Well no. The Last of Us part 2, is a story-driven game. The amazing graphics, and the mediocre gameplay are mere vessels to deliver the main selling point of the game. The story. The story of JOEL and ELLIE. That's what the Last of Us is supposed to be. The story of JOEL and ELLIE. I won't lie to you. I could not finish the game. I bought it, to judge for myself. Played up until the infamous "golf club" scene, took the disc out, and gave my copy up to a friend. So that he can judge for himself. And maybe pass it along, once he too, feels betrayed about how Naughty Dog decided to mislead their fans into this steaming pile of excrement. Stay away if you are one of these people who actually care about the future of gaming. These people must be taught a lesson. Don't buy that game.

The fights are scary, brutal and really intense. I can only compare it with Resident Evil 7 played with my VR headset. You do not want to die in this game - really you don’t as the consequences are breaching the limits of pain. The survival-horror-action gameplay is well known, however improved enough to make it fresh and captivating. The enemies are sometimes really clever, and other times downright stupid, which can kick you out of the immersion. Not always could I agree with the decisions of the characters and they carried me from frustration to despair. ND made very brave choices and I want to say thank you to all dogs. As far as I am concerned I am still enjoying family life.
However, the game is not perfect and the story cannot reach the quality of LOU1. The main weak points I felt are:
    1) You cannot alter the fate of characters or change the story in any way. That was also not possible in LOU1, but the main theme of hatred and absolution asks for it and the game would have profited a lot from a flexible storyline.
    2) There is a strong disconnect between the story and gameplay. Its an issue shared with many other games (like Uncharted, TombRaider...) The characters don't fit their very own actions during gameplay.
This disconnect reaches a whole new level in LOU2 when story and gameplay collide. In a single phrase: the theme of hatred and absolution does not fit 35 hours of bloody urban warfare.

You made my love for playing the first TLOU over and over again, trying different things, disappear..... I can't express my disappointment for this game... I'm sorry but I think you should remake the story or don't make a sequel, because I'm sure it will also be a trash game. You changed my perspective of TLOU. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My opinion on this game. This game fails to keep the character's consistently written. Joel's behavior leading to his death doesn't match his character from the last game. Yes, I've heard people saying he has let his guard down because he was in safe settlement for 4 years. Dude , who would let the f@cking guard down, follow a group of strangers in a world where murder is a common occurrence. Wait there is more, Tommy knew the place that Abby's friends were staying at the start of the game (the lodge) which means they've been there and had probably marked it down as a clear building with no infected nor other humans. And when they arrive at the lodge they don't question who they are where did they came from, Tom and Joel are just chilling with complete strangers. This is not the first time characters are being stupid or making stupid decisions that could cost there f@cking life. That could be seen also with Abby close at the end of the game where Abby finds a radio and tells a complete stranger her location, her name, that she is a firefly . Moreover back to joel, from the start of the first last of us you could see Joel didn't want to to take any unnecessary risks. I remember this scene from the start of the game before the infection took over the world where Tommy , Joel and his daughter were in a car and Joel didn't want to stop and pick up a family that were in random road alone ,he knew they would be a burden. So don't tell me Joel just changed as character all of the sudden . There a lot more I don't like about the storyline this video is how I feel the storyline should have been : (no linking)
Graphics for me for a PS4 console look amazing 9/10
The gameplay in its core feels like the first last of us with some changes of course ,you can go prone, stealth in grass the AI is greatly improved from their last games. There are some bosses that makes it feel like you are playing resident evil.
Gameplay 8/10 I did like the gameplay feels fun
I feel bad for the people who worked on this game for days to make it look good, run well, detailed so much of the environment , the cinematography is really good the only problem is the writing it is not consistently realistic as the first game was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If LoU part 1 is about hope, survival and tough love, part 2 is about the revenge killings enacted between two protagonists. While there is a sense of redemption throughout part 1, part 2 is about damnation. It essentially begins with Abby who decided to exact justice on Joel for the death of her father. To settle the score, Ellie decided to hunt Abby down. Thus a cycle of violence of death - Ellie kills Abby's friends, Abby kills Ellie's friends and so on. The moral dilemma is about when the two protagonist finally decides to let go. In the theatre fight, Abby becomes her better self after she was persuaded by Lev not to kill Ellie. At the Rattler's beach, Ellie was persuaded in her subconscious by Joel not to kill Abby.

The story largely reflects upon the social dimension of indulging in hatred and the consequences that it engenders. In this regard, the game succeeded beyond expectations because the circumstances were so bleak and desperate that many players actually hated the game. The ending was very poignant and heartbreaking with Ellie losing everything because she failed to let go of her vendetta. We essentially loses the two leads that we have grown to love and care so much.

The premise of the Part 2 storyline seemed improbable because in a world that is so vicious and inured to death, it is not likely that the characters esp. Ellie would have taken on the type of risks and vendetta that they did. The battles are really repetitive and in terms of character development, none of the factions (Jackson, Seraphite, WLF), or even the new infected feel refreshing or inspired.

The storyline seemed to be born out of desperation to cling onto the franchise. As there is actually so much material to explore in the LoU world, it would have been better to focus on entirely new characters and different backgrounds.

The flashbacks were worth the purchase but they angered me more as to what had happened. It also proved to me that TLoU is nothing without the father daughter dynamic that Joel and Ellie shared. As for the sympathy project, I see how they tried to reflect the first TLoU through Abby's story but it felt cheap and the revenge plot was triggered by such forced and lazy writing that I was literally left shocked and in disbelief. Ellie's story in the sequel was hollow like her character with one hundredth of the charm of her prequel self. Abby's story was better and I would've enjoyed it had this been another game. Humans are tribal beings and cannot be expected to feel the same way for every group. The ending was pathetic for not allowing options since a second play through could've made me choose differently even though I doubt it. This sympathy project bites off more than it can chew. Expand

I'm starting to get the feeling that most people who rate this game below a 8 either didn't play the game or cry because it didn't end like they wanted the story to end.

I first became a fan of The Last of Us when it was released on Playstation 3, I bought it and played it religiously. The gameplay, sound and above all the story were one of a kind. We met 2 amazing characters that will live and be remembered in the gaming history forever.
I bough the game again (remastered) on Playstation 4, I've played the multiplayer numerous times with friends and had a blast every time. It is safe to say I was exited for The Last of Us 2 and got it on release date.
I've been playing the game ever since I got it, a few hours everyday and today I finally finished it. The graphics, sound and especially level design surpass the part 1 by a country mile. The game is alive, more so than it was in the first instalment. Skeletons with notes feel like they once lived, the houses feel like they barely withstood quest of time and even the enemies feel like real people. The levels are more open-world, allowing the player to choose how much to explore and when to move on. There are dead-ends, screaming enemies, animals, the game feels alive.
The music is fantastic, Santaolalla absolutely smashed it out of the park, in a horror game music might be the most important factor in making the player scared, and boy did that work. The amount of times I was hesitant to continue, or open a door were limitless.

In my opinion the Story of part 2 might even be better than part 1. I understand that people don't like the curveball that is thrown midway through the story, and I didn't like it at first, but looking back at it, it might be the best thing Naughty Dog could have done. We get to see a different side of the situation a
end Ellie learns from it right at the end.
The end did leave me with questions and I wondered why Ellie even bothered making the entire journey if she ended it like that, but the message Naughty Dog want to express is clear and beautiful.

All with all, if you liked part 1 you should 100% play this game, even if you end up not liking the story at the end, the gameplay, sound and level-design make up for it. I was not disappointed and I will replay this game most defiantly one day.

I loved the new characters, which surprised me. I both loved and was frustrated by Ellie. I loved the ride we went on with her spiral into vengeance and hurt when I thought she wasn't going to be able to pull herself out of it. This game is about so much: forgiveness of self, of others, the knowledge that sometimes some things are unforgivable but maybe you have to try anyway, revenge, grief, fear, sacrifice--amazing writing. I really hated going back to play as Abby. Take me back to Ellie!!! Then started to like it. Then really enjoyed it by the end. Lev is the best ever. Ground zero made me almost wet my pants. I just....look, I read a review after I finished that said this isn't the game fans wanted, and I can definitely get behind that sentiment. But then it goes on to say it's still a f*cking good game, and it really, really is. Gameplay is a lot of fun, graphics are great. Some new elements to fights were a great time. As in the first game, I just adored the collectibles, the notes left around, the little background stories we get to see bits of. Ellie's journal was such a nice touch. Especially at her judging a teens journal in the first game from someone from before the outbreak for only worrying about clothes and if a boy likes her, then she's all "does she like me??" in hers. Nice little touches there.
Dropped a point for me personally as some things were off with story pacing, some things rushed that I felt needed more time and other things given too much time that felt it could do without. It would have been nice to see some more little "open world" play elements like the first part started with, to break up what after that was the pattern of fight, slip through crack in wall, fight, slide down muddy path, fight.

This game was amazing. I'll replay at some point, but for now my heart hurts. Incredible work, ND.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished The Last of Us Part II 3 days ago, and now I find myself feeling confident enough time has passed to truly process my thoughts.
The game is complicated (yet it’s not particularly complex however). I spent the first 29 hrs thinking the game was a revenge story, only to understand that in the last 1hr and 45 minutes, the game is truly about forgiveness - and when it's time to let go of the past and move on.
Firstly, let me talk about the gameplay and the world.
The world once more is emphatically beautiful and profoundly immersive. The combat never ceased to excite me and each different area was alive and rich in a real world setting of an unthinkable disaster. The graphics are the best I’ve seen of any game on the PS4 - so ultimately the best of any game of ever played.
Now, the story. It’s flawed, but as far as I can see, that’s intended.
Ellie changes, massively. The opening scenes with her are the last we see of the sweet, caring young lady she’s growing into. And we see her become a mammoth in murder and repent. But I loved it, and I still care deeply for the character, that will never change.
The switch in characters at first made me angry and I even thought about putting the game down until I cared about Abby - but then i thought, what if i never care about her? And that's when it hit me - you don't. At least not at the beginning. But you learn to enjoy her company (at least I did). I learned to feel great empathy for her chocking to death on a noose, or at the end when she's being crucified and is on the verge of mal-nourishment,
The game often tries to be clever. In particular with a mini boss fight as Abby AGAINST Ellie - yano that character we love unconditionally. It's a cycle of actions and consequences and repercussions. You find yourself not only in the middle of it all, but the case with Ellie, you are the catalyst for the consequential actions. You question the motives and the actions of the characters, yet the game does not allow you to choose to comply or not - you just have to.
That's an extremely difficult concept to adhere to - without your consent. I often did not believe in the actions at first. When Ellie travels across country seeking revenge once more, is it believable? I didn't think so at first.
But lets look at the first game. Joel - he fights, kills and outright murders those against him, and he enjoys it. Then he meets Ellie, and he changes. Moreover, his feelings for Ellie becoming stronger and the reason for his actions changes. The act of saving Ellie at the end of the first game (whether you support the action or not) diminishes any chance the human race has of overcoming this disaster successfully. The needs of the many out-way the needs of the few, yet Joel makes a conscious, morally 'incorrect' decision to support his own bias - the needs of him out-way the needs of everyone else
Abbie does the same when she kills him.
Ellie does the same when she goes after her.
Abbie nearly kills Dina cause Ellie killed Mel (the pregnancy sub-plot wasn't well executed imo).
And finally Ellie goes after Abbie again seeking redemption.
And the conclusion is that revenge is not the answer - and as the flashback to Joel at the end suggests - the arc of the story (as printed above) is forgiveness.
The ending, where Ellie leaves Joel behind (metaphorically shown through the guitar being put down), does not pay off. But i understand the symbolism and I feel it’s successful within the story Naughty Dog have told.
It's complicated (as I said), but not complex. It's not a poetic way of telling a story, be it's certainly effective in showing the player the cost of their actions - and that what you think you want, is not always what you need to heal.
It's not the game I wanted, but it's the game Naughty Dog needed to tell.
It's not perfect, but its a master-class in leaving the player with a profound sense of nothingness, forcing you to lament what you have just witness, and question your own morals.

    Play it.
And if you hate it or love it, that's the correct response.

The game did had some good graphics, if you just want to have a tour it could be ok.

The really bad story ruined almost everything. It arouse so much negative emotions, and gives you nowhere for it to release. Instead it forces you to accept what it tried to deliver, one of the worst things you could expect from a game. The character building was awful, I can't see any character

The character building was awful, I can't see any character development. The characters were just tools, that to be used in order to get to push the story forward. Oh, not to mention the story itself was broken.

I believe new game+ is not necessary, no one would want to experience the story again.

A disgusting game, giving us 2 protagonists, who all have the same gameplay. When in the first part, Ellie was different from Joel. Draining the plot lines is disgusting, Joel didn’t deserve it, Ellie does not act like he taught her.

In TLOU1 Joel doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t give out his name to most people, in TLOU2 he trusts everyone and he doesn't act like his original character. Then lets talk about the ending. Ellie goes on a massive killing spree only for Ellie to spare Abby. And I hate how Abby says Lev isn’t “apart of this” nor was Tommy and she intentionally tried to kill Tommy by shooting him in the head. Jesse wasn’t in it either. Bad game, Trash sequel. Expand

The gameplay is like the first game but a little tweaked. Nothing to brag about. The graphic are upgraded ofcourse. The last thing is the story which is already known, it is horrible. I do not understand why others ideals and politics has to be shoved down our throats.

Dull game. Too long and boring, with stupid scenario and characters. Bad game design, no stealth (you use stealth for kills, no for invisible play style). The new mob, who was hidden like "spoiler" - is a fat boring piece of **** To kill it you have to shoot, shoot, and shoot, and shoot... so interesting! Bad game for ppl with no taste,

The graphics are arguably the best I've ever seen. I personally believe the addition of Abby was great, both as a character and a playable character. The only reason why this game is a 9 and not a 10 is due to the unsatisfying ending. Don't give in to all the hate, play the game for yourself and make your decision. Expand

I don't want to give any spoilers out but my opinion of the story is that they try to tell a boring flat revenge tale and then execute it poorly. This game to me is like the new star wars trilogy. It seems it doesn't want to be defined by its predecessor but does not know how to do a good job on its on. I say again that The Last of us Part II is a fancy cake that tastes horrible. For me, the first The Last of Us was the best PS3 game. But I can't say the same about Part II. I'm glad I bought the disk version, so I could sell it right after finishing playing.
The game has good graphics and excellent mechanics, however the plot is terrible. I even tried to replay the game in the +mode, but even skipping the scenes I couldn't keep playing for more than 30 minutes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a huge Naughty Dog fan, I purchased the collector's edition of this game and looked forward to it for years. I did my best to ignore spoilers, and I was convinced that the hate for this game leading up to its release was just bigots who couldn't handle LGBTQ representation in the game. Sadly, after finishing this game, I can say this game is just not good. I was excited for a transgender character to be in this game, and its one of the most interesting and well done parts of the game. But the game is marketed as the next step in Ellie's journey, and Ellie's part of this game ends up being a confusing mess.

First, I'll mention what I liked about this game:

Gameplay: It doesn't differ much from the first game but it is good, as you'd expect from ND. Stealth is fun and can be rewarding, the world is very detailed and makes exploring fun, at least for a large portion of the game. I will say there could have been something new added here, there are additional weapons, some new things to craft, and a couple new types of enemies. Enemy AI is improved and you can hide in tall grass, but it is very similar to the first game.

Graphics: This game is beautiful. The fact that these graphics were achieved on a PS4 is astounding, it is the most impressive part of this game.

Some story elements were great: The flash back scene where Joel shows Ellie the museum is awesome and reminded me of some of the great moments of the first game. Honestly, the scars vs. wolves was actually interesting, I would have rather just got a game where I played as Lev and got that story than what I was given. If anything, these moments of great story telling make the rest of the game more infuriating, because you can see that there was still the potential for this game to be a masterpiece.

The story: Here is where it all falls apart. First off, I don't hate this game because Joel dies, I don't hate it because you have to play as Abbie. I do think this should have been a new IP or a story in the world of Last of Us separate from Ellie/Joel.
The characters in this story constantly contradict themselves. Dina says she had to come with us, she supports our quest for revenge. Then immediately says "There are a lot of bad guys, does this change anything for you?" Jesse tells us he would have come, he looked up to Joel, these people deserve what they're going to get. Then immediately says "We're attacking their camp just like they did us. They could come back and attack Jackson, does that change anything for you?" This seems like a huge disconnect. If the characters actually think this they wouldn't be here with us, ready to kill people. This just seems like poor writing to ask the player "do you feel bad for what you're doing? You're just as bad as these people." Yes, that is true, I never thought Joel was a good guy, I supported his decision because he saved Ellie out of love. Love and selfishness, and anyone who can imagine themselves in his spot would most likely do the same. What if this was your mother? your sister? your daughter? This is just as bad of writing as the characters yelling out someone's name after you kill their friend. Of course if you kill someone, the other people knew their name. I can't even begin to tell you how little of a **** I give. I am here for revenge. These people can die after watching their friends die. Ellie watched helplessly at Joel's broken and tortured body. While Abby smashes his head in with a golf club, she does not care about these people, and neither do I.
Joel being brutally tortured and murdered is obviously given to us to make us angry and want revenge. And the game obviously wants us to not want that revenge by the end of it, to show us violence is pointless, and we shouldn't have hate in our heart. But if you can tell me that you could watch your father be tortured and murdered in front of you and you wouldn't kill that person, you're pathetic. We finally hunt down one of these people, who calls Joel a **** to our face, and I get to hit square a few times to hit her with a pipe, all the while I just see Ellie's face? I felt more impact torturing someone in GTA or God of War games. I felt let down, i wanted to make this character pay for what she did. Now, following the scene where Ellie is dealing with the weight of torturing this woman, really well done, great acting/scene. But if Ellie was going to turn back from revenge I think this is where it would have happened.
This game drags on forever and it left me feeling like this was Abbie's story, not Ellie's. The end of this game is some of the worst writing I've ever witnessed and we never get revenge. This game tries really hard to pull of what the first game did with its own twists and turns. And it fails every step of the way. This game is not a masterpiece, its a story based game and a 4/10 is a generous score. This game made me question all Sony first party titles in the future, something I didn't think possible.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
