We all love Joel, but we don't have to hate the game just because he's dead ... We must also see how well the game is made, how real it seems (it's like a movie ...) This is my opinion, I would give more than a 10! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is singlehandedly one of another of Naughty Dog’s great games. No, nobody paid me to say that. It is my own objective opinion. Every single aspect of this game is enjoyable which is why I think it deserves a 10/10. I won’t get into details but this story is simply the consequence of all of Joel’s actions put into a game with Ellie having to deal with those consequences, whether it’s having to deal with the countless lives that were lost from not having a vaccine to her having to fight a woman whose dad was murdered by Joel. No one is right in this game and every one is wrong. There are so many layers to this game, and to pick that a single person is wrong would be ignorant of this game’s story. Ellie’s bloodlust versus Abby’s revenge for her father was beautifully written. And one more thing, the reason that Abby was so broken up about her father’s death, wasn’t because someone killed him in cold blood but that based on a previous conversation she would have sacrificed herself for him, so she had the guilt of blaming herself for her father’s death her entire life, which caused her to be more intense, stronger, and to be more powerful. This is simply a good game, and I understand that some sensitive viewers will have a problem and can give their opinion but in general this game is amazing. Again, 10/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely a masterpiece of gaming history, no doubt. I avoided all spoilers but had a good idea Joel was gonna die because of the uproar on the internet, though when I started playing as Abby I couldn't stand her at first, I was actually throwing myself off the top of buildings at first to get my revenge for Joel. First time I've purposely killed myself in a game! Ha. But I gotta hand it too naughty dog, by the end I actually liked her and felt for her, I thought the ending was sick and it was better revenge than killing her for Ellie as she killed everyone close to her and left her alive with the guilt that they all died because of her revenge on Joel.
The game is **** awesome and to give it 0/10??? Wow u gotta be bad butt hurt over Joel for that ha. Hands down the best developer out there

It's a story about revenge and it shows us how it transform a person. We barely recognize Ellie at the end. Revenge was taken too far. A truly nice thing about the story, is that we see the Wolves as monsters from Ellies point of view, but once you start playing Abby, you understand how much you were wrong about everything, and it's just mind-blowing. Not going to into the details of the game play cause. Everything is great. Just play it and have a great story to enjoy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't think anybody can deny that TLOU2 has incredible graphics, cutscenes, and music, and if you liked the gameplay of the previous game, you'll have an even better time here. However, I don't think a lot of people play Naughty Dog games for the gameplay or the graphics. Those are the icing on the story-based cake, and (boiling hot take here) I liked it. More specifically, I liked it in the same way I like a depressing movie. I don't like how it makes me feel, but I like that it makes me feel.
90% of people who are reviewing this game poorly cite two things: Joel's early death and the inclusion of LGBT+ characters. They simply cannot look past the fact that Joel died. But if you're willing to see the significance of it, instead of incessantly complaining about how he died too early, then you'll realize that it was done to make you mad. And it succeeded. Now, as for the inclusion of LGBT+ characters: get some tolerance. Everyone's out here griping about how they're "following a political agenda" or "pushing for the left" or whatever, but if Dina was a dude, or Lev wasn't transgender, and they did the EXACT SAME THINGS, y'all wouldn't care. The LGBT+ characters don't do anything more than what straight characters do in other games, yet people complain that they include them too much. I mean, c'mon. They aren't pushing a leftist agenda here, you just can't stomach a game including LGBT+ characters that take the place of straight ones and do the exact same things.
Naughty Dog definitely took a risk here, and it's clearly not a risk that everyone liked. However, if you're like me, who appreciates feeling something that isn't happiness from a video game, can look past a single choice that, let's be real, y'all are making much bigger than it was, and has a pinch of tolerance in your body, then I think you'll at least marginally enjoy this game. Do I think that certain characters deserved better? Yes! But that's the reality of the world. Not everyone gets a happy ending. And I think that's what makes the game great. It doesn't pull any punches, and it takes risks that make you feel something. People played this expecting another Last Of Us, but this game is by no means its predecessor. It's dark and gritty, and takes a lot of risks. Is it as good as The Last of Us 1? No, definitely not. However, that doesn't mean it deserves all of the 0s it's been getting. It's not a feel good game, that's for sure, but I definitely think it's a good one. At least, if you've got the stomach for it.

The Last of Us Part II is one of the best games I have played in recent memory.

This is a game that pushes videos games as a storytelling medium and provides some of the most memorable set-pieces featuring one of the most multi-dimensional cast of any story ever told. This is not just a tale of revenge, but also one of companionship, loyalty, the vicious cycle of revenge, the duality of conflict, and regret. It explores many other themes, some of which come unexpected and can only truly be grasped the the most curious of players.

Its story is backed-up by visceral gameplay, that has you surviving human threats, ranging from the survivor mercenaries inhabiting this post-apocalyptic world, to the ugliest and most dangerous of infected that roam the ruins of a once great civilization. Encounters are brutal and unforgiving. The gameplay is perhaps also the only point of contention in this game, as stealth is often times too easily broken and once that happens, you are left vulnerable and many of the resources you spent hours hoarding suddenly go to waste. It is also worth mentioning that this is a problem because the game was marketed as letting you "pick-your-own-path" in combat. Entire sections can be avoided by sneaking past human enemies and dogs, but this was rarely possible due to the inaccessibility of stealth, having led to unnecessary murders of dogs, which felt deeply uncomfortable.

The graphics only heighten the sense of discomfort when violence is shown on-screen, as every nook and cranny is beautifully realized and you can see every wrinkle, scar, and blood smear on enemies' bodies as you take them down. This isn't to say that there aren't beautiful moments, because there are plenty and they are truly jaw-dropping.

Overall, The Last of Us Part II is a beautifully realized piece of art that stay true to the characters it portrays from the original game, and it opens up new perspectives on their humanity, or lack-there-of at times. It fully realized the developers' intent to portray a story that is the polar opposite of its original, and guide the player through a cycle of hate that can only be broken the the bigger person. I truly can't wait to see where this franchise is taken to next.

How the story was written made me question whether vengeance is ever worth it or not. I found myself caring for the protagonists and their allies, sympathizing with their internal and even external pain. Moreover, the characters’ actions are realistic in a sense. They felt alive. When I played as the protagonists, my opinions didn’t matter, but theirs did—and I followed their every choices no matter how disapproving they were to me. The combat, stealth, and exploration of the game are astounding. The combat is more diverse than the first game with their added implementation of the well-done dodge mechanic. The AI also communicates greatly with each other as well as the player and their actions. Stealth is better than ever, with numerous ways of achieving those sneaky kills or sneaky, pacifistic getaways. Furthermore, depending on whoever you play as, how you approach your enemies would differ. On one character, I kept relying on traps and explosive tools. On the other, I mainly used arrows and silencers—the more quiet gear. Lastly, the world is just impressive to have been developed. There are fascinating details and unessential yet intriguing stories and lore, in the form of artifacts and graffiti, in almost every place of the game. This adds more to the place its set in, and makes it feel more realistic. In conclusion, the game did much, much better than the first. Not just on its gameplay aspects, but also on its story. I respect the directions they took, and I enjoyed it all the way. Trust me when I say this, your Last Of Us experience is going to be an incredible, immersive one if you tackle it with an open-mind and an adventurous instinct. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you are closed-minded, are not capable to have perspective and are not able to understand the character's point of views, then this is NOT A GAME FOR YOU! A lot of YouTubers and people are fixated to Joel's death which is understandable, but a lot of people really don't understand the story which is where all the hate is coming from. Yes, it sucks that Joel died the way he did and I even cried because he is a beloved character but let's be real, it would not be realistic if Joel had an honerable death. Real life does not work that way, especially in a world of survival. Joel himself crossed many people and he happened to cross someone (Abby) that was affected by his actions. That is where perspective comes in. From what I experienced playing the game, there are two themes which is Revenge and Forgiveness. Because of Joel's death, the flashbacks have meaning and brings moments of happiness to a world that is dark and tragic. Even the times Ellie plays the guitar enhances my happiness in the game. It really does bring so many emotions out of me playing this game and I think that is what the developers wanted. We are human after all. The characters in the game are very well written and if you actually pay attention to the story and dialouge you have with the characters, you learn a lot about them. Not everything is in cutscenes. There is this constant cycle of revenge but at the end, when Ellie gets that quick flashback of Joel, she found her peace and was able to forgive Joel from the lie he told Ellie since Part 1. She had no need to kill Abby because she found peace and was able to move on. Revenge would not take anybody anywhere. Ellie and Abby are similar in so many ways. Even Joel and Abby were similar when it came to taking care of a child for instance Joel for Ellie and Abby for Lev. Other than that, gameplay is amazing, definitely and upgrade from Part 1. Graphics are beautiful and like I said, I enjoyed and loved the story. FYI I also noticed that after like 5 hours of the game coming out, there were a bunch of negative reviews of the game so I find that very suspicious considering that game takes like 30 hours +. I really appreciated the adult storytelling that you don't get very often if at all in video games. The first game was a world of Black and White, good and bad but this game introduced moral grey, particularly when viewing character actions from different perspectives.
They truly captured the dark apocalyptic world Ellie and Abby live in, as well as the dark choices people justify to themselves because of revenge and hate.

I see a lot of reviews stating "The game was about revenge yet you get none in the end". I can only say to those people.

    THAT. IS. THE. POINT.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SPOILERS: This game is absolutely unique, there's nothing else like it out there.

I love the fact that you play from the perspective of the villain, it helps you realise that in this world they are all villains and they become so for protecting or avenging the people they love by killing thousands of enemies all with their own backstories.

This feels like an entirely different experience and a standalone game, not a sequel.

I was upset and surprised when I saw the way Joel died and how you play with the character who killed him throughout the entire game, but I like the fact that the developers went for a different reaction, it’s something new and it’s well delivered. The only issue I have with the plot is how Ellie and Tommy are left alive deliberately, that feels unlikely given how all the characters have dealt with similar scenarios in the first game. They should have come up with something external interrupting their execution, such as a horde invasion or an explosion, rather than being left alive deliberately with the opportunity of taking revenge.

The acting is incredible, the characters development and backstory is detailed and deep without giving away too much so that you can find out more information for yourself by exploring the open world and collecting intel.
The graphics are stunning, it’s an open world that improves on the experience of the first game. The action mechanics are incredible.

I understand people are attached to the characters of the first game and if we were given an option for multiple endings and plot developments we would have gone a different route (maybe that’s what’s missing, multiple choices, multiple endings) but I don’t understand why so many people are being crybabies about it.
This game takes you though a journey of forgiveness showing how obsession and revenge destroy everything in its path.

Compared to what’s out there, it’s easily the best game this year and one of the greatest games in history.

    p.s.
I would give it an 8 but I am giving it a 10 to counterbalance the basement trolls giving it a 0 just because if they see gay people in a story they automatically start with: "It'S aN aGeNda oF tHe SjW MaInStReAm MeDiA, I jUsT wAnTeD tO kIlL pEoPlE wItH JoEl CaUsE hE's A dUdE aNd I'm A dUdE, If My ChArAcHtEr iSn'T a StRaIgHt DuDe I cAn'T rElAtE, AnYoNe dIfFeReNt FrOm mYsElF mAkEs Me UnCoMfOrTaBlE", grow the f#### up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

A masterpiece in storytelling, visuals and world design. A raw and visceral tale of the dualities of good and evil, justice and revenge.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us: Part II is proof that video games can offer the most profound and insightful story experiences of any medium, a masterpiece of storytelling and gameplay.

The gameplay, music, performances, etc are all incredible and unforgettable. For this reason alone, the game is fantastic. But the reactions to the story have rocked me to my core. I believe no game has challenged the player to grapple with its themes and conflicts more than this game, which is primarily through its story.

I'll put it bluntly: Part II is a masterpiece of storytelling because of the very criticisms that people have about the game, not despite them.

In my opinion, people are upset that the game isn't what they expected, and are misconstruing change with a bad story. If the game were exactly like the first, then what is the point of making a sequel, especially as a sequel for a game with a nearly perfect ending? As I said, Part II is a masterpiece of storytelling because of the very criticisms that people have about the game. Since Ellie and Joel are the protagonists, we want them to be morally justified, we want them to live. Like Ellie, we begin the game traumatically watching Joel die, someone who we have waited years to reconnect with, and we are drawn into her quest for revenge.

Ellie's section is filled with stellar gameplay and touching flashbacks where she grapples with the realization of what Joel did in Salt Lake City. With each murder of Abby's friends, we watch her devolve into a monster, and it feels justified nearly the entire time. The scene in the Aquarium, when Ellie realizes Mel was pregnant, demands that we think about Ellie's actions. We then end on the major cliffhanger in the theater, and suddenly, we're Abby, a monster, a villain. Ellie's nearly guaranteed death hangs over us and haunts us.

But then Abby's section begins, and the game doesn't just humanize her and her motivations. The game demands that we empathize with her and that we question our assumptions about justice. Joel murdered Abby's dad, and thus Abby murdering Joel is completely justified if we use Ellie's quest as a standard, and probably moreso given that the game once again asks us to grapple with the moral dilemma of saving Ellie instead of producing the vaccine. Ellie grapples with this as well, feeling like her life would have had value if only she had died in the hospital. Having killed Joel, Abby is struggling and suffering, standing as proof that revenge cannot eliminate her trauma and bring her closure. We then see Ellie's journey in a completely new and upsetting light.

The game is not asking you to side with Abby or to consider her to be a good person, though you may. The game is using the characters as foils of each other to make a greater and incredibly clear statement about the cycle of violence. We learn to view Mel, Owen, Nora, etc as people who act in a very similar way to Ellie's friends. So who is right, who is wrong? Who will "win?" Who deserves to die, and what is the point of any of this? The game constantly forces you to consider and then reconsider its characters' actions in a way that is rarely seen. We grow and develop as Ellie and Abby do, which is stunning compared to other video games.

The feelings and thoughts going through my head as I reentered the theater, this time as Abby, are feelings that I have never felt in a game and can't put into words. As a player, I was rooting for Abby here, not hoping that she would kill Ellie, but that she would find her humanity and break the cycle of violence. I felt the same way with Ellie in Santa Barbara. The ending of the game, in which visions of the moment she began to forgive Joel are interlaced with her nearly killing Abby, proves to us that what Ellie needed was to come to terms with Joel's death and his decision to save her in Salt Lake City. Murdering Abby would not have helped, in the same way that murdering Joel did not help Abby cope with her own trauma.

I was worried about whether a sequel was justified to Part I. However, after playing Part II I've decided that the only reason that the story felt finished to us is because we didn't care about the people Joel senselessly murdered in Salt Lake City. We didn't care about Abby's dad. They weren't the protagonists, they weren't important, so the story ends with no loose ends. But Part II rejects these assumptions and goes above and beyond Part I's moral dilemma. Alongside stellar gameplay, performances, music, art, and environments, Part II demands questions of justice, revenge, identity, violence, grief, trauma, bias, and moral ambiguity in a stunning and unforgettable way. No game has ever demanded so much from the player, and Part II elevates video games to a peak that surpasses most movies and books. No game is perfect, but to call The Last of Us Part II anything short of a masterpiece is to criminally underrate it.

There will be a lot of exploration just like the first game so if that was not an aspect you enjoyed the first time, this game might not be too fun for you. Another thing that surprised me is how much actual game there was here. moments where you are locked to walking and just hearing character dialogue are mostly embedded into the exploration this time around so you can hear the dialogue and move at your own pace (although the first 2 hours of the game are quite slow in this regard). total play time was 26 hours and 7 minutes, the longest linear game i have ever played.

Graphics - 10: probably the best ive seen on console and possibly the best anywhere and shockingly i never had a frame rate drop with this game and i am playing on a base ps4.

Story - 9: Definitely the only part of this game responsible for the controversies around it but I truly enjoyed the story. It is dark, gritty, bold, and extremely unpredictable throughout. The only issue with the story is within the last level where the game feels like it had some content cut for time as it feels rushed.

Overall - The game far surpassed my expectations and is one of my favorite games this generation. The story might put people off if there are expectations held too high since this game will be about perspective, understanding, and acceptance. The gameplay was extremely fun and brutal, the game is unbelievably long for its genre, double the length of the first game, and I truly am excited for what comes next after its controversial ending.

First of all i am writing this review because of all the unwarranted criticism this game is getting.I thought if people write reviews without having played the game just because it is cool to hate this game, I can also write a review praising it for how good it is.
After playing this i did not know i actually wanted a sequel. I am absolutely glad of the direction it took because in this way it is even more unique and fresh than what it could've been if Naughty Dog went with a safer approach. This story is brutal and shocking. This is a clear departure from the easier to swallow formula of the first game which focused on a wonderful relationship while it still explored the dark depths of humanity that are revealed by the coming of the virus. This goes all the way into the darkest depths of character study. The plot is set in motion by Joel's death which comes very early into the game and while expecting it, it still managed to surprise me. This is a brutal undignified death that further explores the dark state of the world. It also launches Ellie's brutal revenge story in motion. The game departs from the Ellie we know from the first one. We see a more mature version of her and we observe as she slowly loses her established humanity piece by piece in her obsession with revenge . The game also wants you to see the game in this first half through her eyes antagonizing the group responsible for Joel's death making it easier to connect with Ellie's struggle. In the second half of the game we play as a new character named Abby who is responsible for brutally murdering Joel in the beginning of the game. I was intrigued by this narrative choice and I was curious to see if the game would be effective with such a twist in perception. It is in my opinion a brilliant design choice that further enhances the story suggesting the message that in such a depressing world it is all a matter of perspective. We see Abby's relationships and friendships akin to what we see in Ellie's part of the story. And as the game slowly shifts to Abby's perspective you start to see Ellie as the villain. All of this further enhances in my opinion the idea that the game tries to convey. It wants to depress you, make you feel desperate as if you are a part of the lifeless world that it represents. I can totally understand why some people cannot appreciate this shift of narrative because of the passion they had for the first game which still is from a narrative standpoint a masterpiece. I do not agree with the clearly fake reviews that nitpick at the game simply because it's cool using arguments such as an nonexistent political agenda that apparently is behind the game. I can also not understand the people who stopped playing after Joel died. So in conclusion this game is absolutely unique and fresh and further illustrates the power of immersion videogames have achieved. It is also a bleak character study that explores humanity's most primitive and overpowering desires

Instead of giving us a fan service sequel, Naughty Dog has done something truly magical by willingly taking huge risks to tell a beautiful and painfully tragic tale. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of Us part 1 was a 10/10 story with probably 6/10 gameplay in my opinion. Well here in the second one it is probably the opposite. I LOVE this new gameplay mechanics when you play as Ellie (on hardest difficulty its even better, you have to really outsmart your enemy, watch out for your ammo and trully think before you act). It is BRUTAL, you can deform your enemy, make them suffer, cut off their limbs, disarm them and make them beg for their life, before you kill them, it is something new and fresh, that I missed in the first one. On the other hand, the story is much weaker then the first one. Pacing is terrible, you play as Ellie the first half of the game with 4 flashbacks and than you play the other half as Abby with her own flashbacks, the problem is, that these two narratives dont connect at all, all you learn as Abby is that her group is alright and pretty much innocent. Abbys story gets better at the end, when she connects with Lev and finds her long ago lost feelings. I liked the ending, Ellie was possessed with revange and lost everything because of her selfish acts (just like Joel in the first game). At the end she reminds herself of the last conversation with Joel where she said to him, that she cant forgive him, but she can at least try, thats why she lets Abby go. This story is about forgiveness, not about revange. Loved Ellies parts of the game, but I was bored with Abby tbh, well ... It is still a great game and it is a must have for PS4 for its controversy itself ... Im giving it a weak 8/10 (deserved 7, but Naughty dog made some AWESOME games and Im forgiving them these flops) ;) Expand

I would write a whole review, but it feels more important to just focus on what a lot of people thought the game got wrong, which I feel it got incredibly right. – You clearly do speak fluent sarcasm (rude dialect), it's obvious. Jokes aside, I think Abby was a hard character to understand for those who don't feel the love in her voice when **** her dad, Owen, and Manny. Ellie can be friendly, Abby will always come off as a little closed off because of her pain. – Her actions were justified. Joel **** humanity, set it back 100 years at least. I would have wanted to do the same if I had no knowledge or connection to Ellie and Joel's relationship – We both hate her. But at least try to understand her choices. – Playing as her made my skin crawl in the best kind of way. The game was uncomfortable, because when you switch you see her through Ellie's eyes at the peak of loss and hopelessness. – Her and Ellie are mirrors; Ellie is immune, small, stealthy, better at killing infected, and made strong by her companions (at first). Abby is large, intimidating, aggressive, trained to kill people, and made stronger through loss (her father, relationship with Owen, her cause in the Fireflies). – Only at the end do both character arcs reverse, and they come to a point of mutual understanding, growth, and forgiveness. Abby relies on Lev and forgives herself, Ellie forgives Joel and Abby. – Ellie killed Dina's dream and wrecked her own mind because of revenge. Abby got her friends killed for the same reason. – I didn't want Joel to die, but I believe the alternative would have been the same dynamic as the last game (which makes no sense to me given Ellie's growth and awareness of Joel's betrayal) or a sad sap story of Ellie causing tragedy because she can't forgive Joel, who is still alive, and Joel failing to help Ellie because he's blinded by love. What we got was a great piece on cyclical revenge, and a bleak picture of humanity's darkness. – Jesse was fleshed out during the story, but I'm hoping we get a Jesse & Joel DLC. Lots of DLC! ALL THE DLC. Tommy going to the Big Sur firefly camp looking for Abby would be good too. Now what I think it could have done better: – The Rattlers part felt rushed; I would have liked to see Ellie travel to Santa Barbara, even if alone. Preferably, having Dina (leaving baby with Jesse's parents) or Tommy trail her there, and save her from the near-death side injury at the end, like how she healed Joel in game 1. – Ellie should have killed Abby and then nearly die (with an ambiguous ending), or Abby kill Ellie and Dina kill Abby and Lev both (definitive ending). – Plot variations for multiple playthroughs could have been a nice touch, but I understand it's hard to write a good story in that format. Overall, this is a **** masterpiece in my humble and clueless opinion! Expand

I have played the game and replayed it a second timer and I really am enjoying everything about it and I don’t understand the hate revolving around this game. The story makes you feel what the writers were aiming for and just because Joel dies in the beginning doesn’t mean the game deserves such a bad rating. People say the way Joel does is dry and he acts stupid but there is a reason for that. Joel is in the comfort of Jackson and there isn’t much danger going on there for years already therefore maybe he has gotten a bit less tough. Back then he had to always be aware of the dangers because he was always under the threat of death and for years that has stopped for him in Jackson. And his death was dry and so are other deaths because sometimes in real life that’s what happens. People get shot or killed almost instantly and out of nowhere all the time and it’s almost never a slow death where they get to say something to their loved ones or whatever you guys were hoping for. So stop hating on the game if you have not played it and just saw leaks or someone else hating it. Have your own opinion and experience this masterpiece yourself. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part II is the best game I’ve ever played. Not only the tecnical aspects of the game are incredible (graphics, playability, etc) but the experience and story are amazing. Before this game, I have never been so imersed in a game universe to the point that I think about it all day long. It is definitely not for every one: if you are close minded and expect a game that gives you a hero and a villain, don’t even waste your time. The Last of Us part II teaches you that everyone has a good and a bad side. Unlike most reviews that I read, I don’t hate Abby. I actually like her, and that doesn’t change the fact that I loved Joel and that I love Ellie. The two girls live in an environment that encourages them to be violent and seek vengeance, and that is all that they know. Joel screwed up when he killed the surgeon, and even though killing is never ok, Abby had her reasons for wanting Joel dead. Unliked Ellie who seeked vengeance at all costs and killed EVERYONE, Abby not only once but twice let Ellie go, since she only wanted Joel’s life. They both were very violent and in the end kinda got what they caused to others. Abby lost every single friend, got caught by that gang and almost died, and in the end even lost her dignity when Ellie almost killed her. On the same way, Ellie had the chance to put her family first and live peacefully, but she didn’t and again screwed up because Dina herself said she wouldn’t put up with it anymore. I really believe that they are both very alike, and both have a really bright side (abby saving the kids; ellie with her family) and a dark side, that unfortunately caused the death of Joel, Jesse, Owen, Mel and Nora (I hate them both but you get the point), and others. Lastly, I would like to congratulate the people that made this game, the whole story was perfect (even though I almost **** my pants fighting those zombies). It was a very realistic story and that is why it’s so sad and divides people. Thanks for reading! Expand

From a narratological point of view, the story is well put and got me on an emotional rollercoaster: from hate to fear, from joy to sadness... I had goosebumps and sometimes teary eyes because I was emotionally overloaded.

Now, don't get me wrong: I can see why the some players may be disappointed about the story (although barely any of them provide objective reasons). However, I thought it was revolutionising to some extent. In no game have I ever been so incredibly immersed and empathetic for both the prototypical 'good' and 'bad' side. In one of the last scenes, I actually heard myself saying "She didn't deserve that.* and for a moment, I was left with pure disgust towards the main character the overarching discourse of such games wants me to feel sympathetic towards. They way they got me invested emotionally was just unbelievably well done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. (Spoilers are relatively light in this review) - Right from the start you will be amazed by the beauty of the landscape and scenery. The level design is second to none. Once you start playing you will also notice the game mechanics are also immensely better than from The Last of Us (Part I). The fluidity in battle was elegant, and the fight are real, raw, and gory. Stealth capabilities are at an all time high with more options than ever. The HUD is essentially invisible allowing you to see the entire screen the entire game with no distractions and emphasizes the immersion experience. I also recommend playing with a headset because the sound was incredible as well! I believe that everyone that played this game can agree to the things listed above.

Now here comes the controversial part of the game... which is the story. The first game was about a tragic event that happened to Joel. In turn he shut his emotions down and locked them away. He was given a job to deliver Ellie to a rebel militia group called "The Fireflies" which was across the United States. During this journey you get to know Joel and Ellie much more as Joel slowly starts opening up to Ellie and starts seeing her as a daughter figure. By the end of the game he cares about Ellie so much he fights the militia group to get her back from them. One big take away from this game was a story of love and family which touched the heart of everyone who played it. Creating a masterpiece to never be forgotten.

The Last of Us Part II turns out to be a much darker story. One of the first themes in the beginning of the game was that there are two or more sides to every story. The abundant killings in the first game may have no meant anything to us, but to a character in this one it changed their life forever and they want vengeance/revenge. This game touches on so many topics like hatred, revenge, cheating, lying, betrayal, LGBTQ+, Trauma/PTSD, Phobia's and as said before multiple sides to every story. Lets be clear about the LGBTQ+ topics. At no point does this seems forced, pushed in your face, or changes anything about the game as your playing. You wont even notice so avoid reviews that make it seem as though this leads the story. On the other side of the previous topics there are so many beautiful moments where you see heartwarming and loving experiences that make you smile, laugh, and maybe even shed a tear out of joy. In the beginning I will admit i was a confused as to why they went the route that they did. But as you progress further things become more clearer, things connect, and you see every actions has an equal and opposite reaction that can spiral into a never ending cycle of hate and torture. One thing i firmly believe is that no one can tell you what the story will mean to you and how you will relate to it and the morals behind it. It is all for you to decide for yourself. From my opinion the story was excellent and far better than most games you would play today.

Even though i praise almost everything about this game highly I personally felt like the player to character connection was lacking for many new and unestablished characters in this game. Every player already had a connections to Joel and Ellie from The Last of Us Part 1, but aside from that it was hard to care about anyone else too much.

Lastly, I loved this game enough I went back to unlock the Platinum Trophy. As I was replaying I realized the way they wrote this story made it a replay game. With the information you know after completing the story originally you get to see the same story but viewed differently. Believe it or not it made the game even better. I found this to be incredibly well done.

The talent at Naughty Dog is phenomenal. Even though not everything was "Perfect" I would highly recommend this game to anyone. I think once the smoke settles people will see this game was beyond its time.

    I undoubtedly rate this game a 10/10

Probably because the story is charged with so many different and sometimes conflicting emotions. I loved it, I’ve never experienced the level of emotional attachment to a video game character before. This game takes you on quite the roller coaster ride of thrill that has never really been done before in a game. For a lot of people it may even be a little bit uncomfortable at times but that’s by design and you come out at the end having learned some pretty big life lessons. Then there’s the setting which is the same setting we fell in love with in the first game mixed with a much more polished gameplay system and some impressive, next-gen style character animations and rendered environments makes you to keep wanting to go back in and experience the amazing game again and again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 is a phenomenal game. The graphics are some of the best in this generation. The fight scenes are tense, scary and big. The controls and overall gameplay are excellent just like the last game. I love how fluid the animations are during a fight scene. In one instance, I ran and grabbed a brick, threw it at someone, dodged a bullet and charged another person with a hammer. It’s hard to explain, but those events unfolded exactly how they should without any glitches or awkward animations or stutters. It felt empowering. Another time, I was sneaking up on someone and I didn’t realize there was dog near by and he sniffed me out and the enemies quickly tried to surround me. I was forced to abandon my plan and run through several buildings to lose the enemies. I also like how different Ellie and Abby feel during fights.

I honestly don’t understand the hate the game continues to get. Yes, it’s extremely violent and a lot of that violence is really graphic, but the game is a story about revenge and hate. What did you expect? The very first trailer showed Ellie in a house filled with dead bodies and she says “I’m gonna find, and I’m gonna kill every last one of them” Did you think she was going to travel to Seattle and toilet paper the place and maybe give some people wedgies? Ellie already has survivor's guilt and is now filled with hate for the people who killed Joel. Of course it’s gonna be violent…extremely violent. She has nothing to lose.

That brings me to another huge gripe…Joel is dead. Joel had to be killed for this story to exist. Unfortunately, it’s as simple as that. I love Joel, but he had to die to set Ellie off in this vengeful rage.

The last and probably most relevant gripe is that you have to play as Abby for the second part of the game and...that playing as Abby seemed like a long side quest. I get it. When they first put me in Abby’s shoes I was pissed. I hated that character. I hated her so much that I didn’t even look for resources in the beginning. I just wanted her to die...but that’s when I started to realize something. As I continued to play her chapters I realized that Abby is not all that bad. Joel killed her Dad and she was simply out for revenge. She even spared Ellie and Tommy whereas Ellie was out to kill everybody, not just Abby. Abby actually grows as a character. She genuinely cares about what may happened to Lev and his sister. She turns against the WLF and helps them. This is not a side quest, this is where you realize that she is a good person and unfortunately revenge got the better of her. Ultimately you realize that Abby is a better person than Ellie. Of course, you still love Ellie more (because she rocks), but by the end of the game I was conflicted about killing Abby.

I really liked the risk Naughty Dog took with the story. By the end of the game I thought it was really satisfying playing as Abby and seeing the other side of the story. The flashbacks were also a nice change of pace compared to the main plot. I was also a fan of all the new characters...Dina, Jessie, Mel, Owen, Nora and Manny.

I only have 1 real gripe…in certain situations when I really need to keep moving, I have to stop to look around for resources. In those scenes resources should just be readily available to keep the action flowing. Maybe just have enemies drop more ammo or something.

Overall, the game was fantastic and I really enjoyed playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good game overall, although there are some critiques that stop it from reaching the level of TLoU1.

    What it does good:
    • Great gameplay, overall a much tighter experience than TLou. Combat feels much more dynamic.

    • Beautiful sound and level design. Levels feel much more open, realistic, and lived in than the first game

    • First half of the game is phenomenal, a 10/10. A very focussed revenge story that has a lot of force behind it with Joel's death. The semi open world exploration with Dina was probably the most fun I had during my playthrough.

    What it does poorly:
    • The switch to Abby halfway through the game causes it to lose a lot of momentum. ND clearly wanted you to sympathise with her, but after the gut blow of watching Joel die, this proves too difficult to pull off. I feel her section could have been trimmed down or rearranged to have more impact on the story. Maybe have us play for a few hours on our way to hunt down Joel, so we begin to bond with her character before she kills him? And later alternate between Ellie and Abbys sections, and have Abby's story tie in more directly with Ellie's? It seems the big struggle with Abby is that by having her kill Joel immediately and then spending 10 hours hunting her as Ellie, the player is too primed to hate her, meaning the comparisons in her character to Joel and Ellie are lost. And although thematically Abby's story ties directly to Ellie's, again, it really doesn't mesh well and ends up killing the momentum the story had. I think seeing the consequences of Ellie's actions more directly on Abby would end up being more effective at having us sympathise with her, and lead to a tighter overall narrative. • More boring characters. TLoU1 had a small, but effective cast of side characters. Each served a clear purpose and was memorable. In TLoU2, the cast of characters is much larger, and the game suffers for it. Abby's friends are indistinct for the most part, and I found myself constantly questioning who these characters were. Jesse's death also struggles to deliver much of a blow, since he comes across as a very uninteresting character. He is the definition of plain, whose only character trait seems to be being Ellie's friend who dies. • The ending. Having Ellie decide to spare Abby leaves a bad taste in the players mouth. We are clearly meant to draw parallels between Ellie and Joel, and Abby and Lev. But our connection to Joel runs to deep, and Abby's growth is too performative to have much of an impact on the player. After watching some interviews with Niel Druckmann the ending has started to grow on me, but after initially finishing it I was left feeling disappointed.

Overall, you should definitely play this game. It analyses the consequences of Joel's decision to lie to Ellie in TLoU1, and is overall an enjoyable (if very, VERY bleak) experience. I just feel ND over-indulged with Abby (having far too much of the story focus on her), and underestimated how easy it would be to get players to sympathise with her. The point of art is to make you feel something, which this game definitely accomplishes. I just wish Ellie could have a little happiness in her life, and didnt leave me feeling so bleak, haha.

First things first, no, it doesn't have a PC or LGBTQ+ agenda. Ellie is gay and a secondary character is trans, that's it. There are no explicit queer sex scenes (though you do see a 30 second heterosexual sex scene - consensual with a bit of boob, definitely nothing that would push the limits of the 18 rating). The most explicitly gay stuff you see is kissing and general cuteness between girlfriends, if you think that's an agenda then I don't know what to tell you, you live in a bubble and queer folks exist, get over it.

It's pretty grim and gruesome, the deaths are a lot more hard hitting. If you shoot someone in the leg and they bleed out, they'll scream and writhe for several seconds, there's more fear in their faces when you kill them, they sometimes beg for their lives, the people watching their friends die are more authentically messed up by it, stuff like that. Not something that will bother everyone, but I'd say that's the nastiest bit of the game in terms of overall gameplay. Once again if you're more offended by a bit of boob and a consensual sex scene, IDK what to tell you. There's also a bit of weed use and a mention of a grumpy old alcoholic, if those are deal breakers for you.

Graphics are amazing, sound design is great, and the gameplay itself is very similar to the first game, but just a little bit better. IMO it's perfect, I hate when they change too much in the sequels when the original was so good. If it's not broke don't fix it, you know? And The Last of Us Part II honours that, it basically expanded on the original combat without changing much at all. Oh, except one thing - Clickers ACTUALLY use echolocation now (they just used hearing in the first game) and they don't bloody tell you, I must have died a dozen times before I realised they can "see" you if you stand in front of them while they're making noises.

As for the rest... basically it's a game about how much you can mess yourself up in the pursuit of revenge. It's a game that hurts you then tells you to get over it, because staying angry will only ever leave you unsatisfied and unhappy. It's true to life, moreso than most of us would like, and at times it's frustrating, tedious, or even in-your-face insulting. The game doesn't care if you like it or not, it doesn't care if it makes you feel bad, and it doesn't care about making you feel better. Pretty much every criticism I've seen against the game so far (that this plot point should have been different, that the pacing is weird, that you don't care about that character, that you're not satisfied with the ending, etc) can be answered with "yes, I know, that's literally the point." Once you get your head around that, it's a good game that achieves exactly what I believe it set out to achieve.

If that sounds interesting to you then I say go for it, maybe watch a playthrough first (I recommend JackSepticEye or GabSmoulders purely because they seems to be the only YouTubers thus far who actually get it) or wait for it to come on sale, or keep your eyes open on marketplaces online or CEX and similar trade-in stores, I'm sure there will be a lot of copies there soon enough. Do actually play the game though if you want to criticise it, and be wary of those with generic copy/paste reasons for disliking it, such as an unsatisfying ending or a dislike for the "PC agenda" it doesn't have.

Naughty Dog.

A lot of bad. We all have a right to an opinion however I do wonder why all these negative reviews and if I played the same game as the majority of people reviewing here. Are a lot of people being simple minded because of some of subjects that the game touches? Ie: Ellie’s sexuality. Sad if that is the case.

When I completed the game I watched through all the game credits. Correction. I stared at the credits for a good 10/15 min just listening to the background guitar music and reflecting on what just happen.
An emotional rollercoaster, happy moments, very sad moments and an unbelievable and unexpected story that kept me always guessing what would happen next.
Is this game worth the 40 hours I just spent on it? Definitely yes and I will be playing it again for the Platinum.

Is this the game of the decade? I believe so. Why? Because its a story of love, hate, selfishness and revenge that totally describes the society we live in today. And I love it for that. It also makes you reflect on how far are you willing to go to do what you think in your mind is right and just.
We all have a right to our own opinion so, if you want to have your own opinion, do not listen to the bad reviews here and play the game. Only then you will know if it is worth it.

I thank you Naughty Dog for taking me on this incredible journey and giving me one of the best games I ever played.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright where to begin. The last of us part 2 is a great game. hear me out first. i absolutely loved the first game when i finished i immediately began another play through. the story and characters were so well done and it is a near perfect game. this is how i see the games. The first last of us had okay gameplay, it wasn't bad whatsoever i actually really enjoy it but it was nothing special while the story was perfect and i loved it so much i cant wait to see the HBO show. The last of us part 2 has amazing graphics, gameplay, bosses, chase scenes everything. the game is so immersive and brutal enemies cry out for their friends and lives. but where this game drops is the story. People absolutely hate the story and i completely get why. its a mess and sometimes theres just a bit too much political nonsense. but for me it doesn't ruin the experience completely. people are out here giving the game a zero which is absolutely far fetched and undeserving. a zero means it has nothing good at all and you even though you hate the story you cant just ignore the visuals, acting, and gameplay. its very unfair. now going deeper into the story. i will admit, i was furious when i saw that i had to play as abby for half the game. i hated her for what she did to joel and wanted her dead. but as you keep playing you learn he motives. think about it. Ellie and abby are on the exact same story. someone killed their father figure and they want revenge. why is abby the bad guy here? yes, i still hate abby for killing joel but the story humanizes everyone and develops them in a good way. people are also mad about the ending. i can see why but people need to look into it more. this whole story is a violent revenge story. Joel kills abbys dad, abby kills joel, ellie kills owen and mel, abby kills jesse, just a whole circle of violence. had ellie killed abby at the end, Last of us part 3 probably wouldve been about lev getting revenge on ellie. She said she could never forgive joel for what he did but she could try, so why not abby? In the first game joel made a selfish choice and the one person he cares about deeply hates him. In part 2 Ellie makes a selfish choice and loses everything. It all comes full circle. i loved the game, story and gameplay, but i completely understand why people are mad and upset at the game, but i think its all for the wrong reasons and it is getting undeserved 0’s. Would recommend the game to people, but its not for everyone. Expand
