    The Last Of us 2 is certainly a divisive game but I'd rather call it a experience. Although the game starts off slow it does this to establish a tone however once things start picking up you know your in for one hell of a ride. Naughty Dog really came out swinging on all fronts for this outing from the graphics to the gameplay and especially it's characters.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, ignore many of the homophobic and hateful reviews. Are some valid? Probably, but few actually give constructive criticism that doesn't stem from the game including "identity politics" and everything else.

    What's great about the game:

    The graphics, as expected, are beautiful. I've spent twenty minutes staring at the mountains because of how gorgeous everything looks (and how disgustingly terrifying the zombies look). The characters, both old and new, are amazing. I think the story in itself offers up a level of realism with the relationships going on, even between characters we've just encountered. Ellie feels like the Ellie we meet during the first game, but she's older and stronger (and a little terrifying as well). SPOILER MENTIONED: Of course, we all know (or most know) what happens to the beloved Joel. Even though his horrific death is gutwrenching and awful, it fits the story. I can get being upset about losing a character you love, but his death leads to the rest of the game and the feelings of the characters, even Tommy, who we only see in glimpses and through his actions. SPOILER OVER

    The cinematics (which I do have a tad of a gripe about, mentioned below), are also incredible, and some of them give us the much-needed relief from the horror. This game is definitely more story-driven than the first one, but I don't have a problem with that. The Last of Us has always been a more story-driven game. Representation is important, especially in video games. To some, it's pushing an agenda, but video games reach large populations, meaning they need to more diverse than they were growing up. This game does just that without making it a focal point. Ellie being gay has been established since the DLC of the first game came out, so I do not understand the shock there.

    SPOILER: There is a transgender character later on named Lev, and not Abby, as many tried to enforce due to her body shape and appearance. So, don't fall into that misinformed belief. SPOILER OVER

    What I find to be the best thing about the game is the horror of it all. So many post-apocalyptic games tend to forget the setting and what is at stake. They fall short on the zombie aspect and just struggle to create moments of true tension and horror. The Last of Us II is a great example of wonderful horror. It has tension and builds tension without making the moments too obvious. As the one playing or the one watching, the game creates a level of anxiety many others come nowhere close to achieving. The gore and violence, which I have seen many say is too much, is just right for the game. It does make it more mature, but the violence fits the setting and the plot.


    Onto what I found to be the negatives:

    In regards to the cinematics, I do find that they do happen a little too often. It feels as if every other moment is a cinematic scene, which can bog down the overall gameplay if too frequent. Granted, the cinematic scenes are great, but I feel some moments didn't need to have one.

    SPOILER: One of my gripes and this may just be me, is how quickly the relationship happens between Ellie and Dina. This is probably just me and my struggle to understand the passing of time, but it jumps so quickly from them having this awkward thing going on to them calling each other babe and talking about their lives together. I do think the game could have done better with spacing that out so it does not overwhelm the story. SPOILER OVER


    These are my negatives so far. More may arise, but not enough to warrant such a huge drop in a review.

    Overall, the game is great as a sequel. It also works as a standalone game. I think a lot of the reviews, especially the negative ones I have read, expected one thing and are upset that they got something else. That's how these things work. And certain types of characters being in a game is not pushing an agenda. It's simply saying we exist and deserve to be included in all forms of media, not just the political ones.    … Expand

    Pretty sure all the negative reviews are from people who either haven’t even played the game or even finished it....Its beautiful, has made me smile more times than i can count, and yes a bit depressing but so is real life when your old enough....there is literally nothing wrong with this game

    Great to see the xbox gamers active and rating PS4 games! It is a sign of fear from them for rating this game so low. Xbox has some great games and i dont go rate them a low score. The Last Of Us 2 is one of the best if not the best games of this generation.

    I'm only about 5 hours into the game and it has made me emotional already. It plays are your heart strings in so many different ways. But like the first one. This is a game where u don't make choices... It's not an open sandbox. The game guides you along a well paced and we'll told story. I know this game was going to be good with the how to shoot tutorial. it's really simple but they made you have a snowball fight with children to learn the controls of a meaning guiding navigating. to have such a light-hearted moment and such a heavy game and to use that as training tutorial that made sense in the story I knew I was in. I'm not too far and I've only played the game for about 5-6 hours song about a fifth of the way through but if you like the first game I think you're going to love this.

    UPDATED: I FINISHED THE GAME AND... I still loved ITM it fell a little shy of the first game. But I enjoyed it the story. The big leak I think was warranted and added so much to the story and messages    … Expand

Plus, every other aspect of the game is brilliant. From the the realistically flawed human beings, to the gorgeous graphics that make you feel like you're controlling a real person in a very real world. No word of a lie, one of the greatest games I've ever played. If you haven't played it do yourself a favour and play this gem, because you'd be missing out if you're judging the game from three scenes that make sense if you play but don't if you won't. (Additionally, the only people **** on it are kids who use memes as their profile pictures, and people who are really salty about Joel dying and refuse to play the game)… Expand

    I have completely played and finished The Last of Us Part 2. First off I'd like to say I thought the game was great. В геймплейном плане конечно же игра скакнула через первую часть, но не могу сказать, насколько далеко. Во второй части ты чувствуешь своего персонажа, чувствуешь мощь и тяжесть оружия, чувствуешь каждый удар. Но ведь это было и в первой части, здесь же всё доведено до идеала. В плане крафта игра тоже отличается от первой части. Основные механики остались, но есть что-то новое, интересное. Стелс интересный и разнообразный, противники иногда тупят, но в целом, новые механики очень круто вписываются в геймплейную часть. Про графику говорить нет смысла, она на высоте. Ну и конечно же сюжет. Видите все эти плохие оценки от игроков? "В игре ЛГБТ повестка, Анита Саркисян испортила игру". Где повестка? Игра не возвышает меньшинства, она показывает реальность. Кому-то не нравится, что Элли лесбиянка. Но давайте объективно, к этому ещё давно вело дополнение Left Behind. Почти все обсуждают сюжет, и говорят, насколько он плох, так вот моё мнение о сюжете:

    Разработчики говорили, что месть будет двигать Элли по сюжету. Они не солгали, так и есть, большую часть геймплея мы движемся по тонкой нити, дабы отомстить за смерть Джоэла. Меня поразила его смерть в самом начале, но она нужна была сюжету. В этом мире, мире где каждый выживает как может, не стоит думать, что всё будет радужно. Элли стала одержима, она убивала всех на своём пути. Что касаемо Эбби: нам раскрыли её историю и мотивацию. Те, кто говорит, что она лишняя, пусть говорят, лично я так не считаю. Она привнесла в сюжет много ответов, мне действительно стало жаль её и её отца, которого убил Джоэл. Она отомстила за отца. Кто-то скажет, 4 года прошло, зачем он ей сдался? Элли с Джоэлом прошли пол Америки не за один день, при том, что у них был заданный маршрут и конкретная цель. В этом мире, без транспорта, где всё разрушено, нельзя так просто найти нужного человека и достать его за пару дней. Эбби не стала убивать Элли, оставила в живых Дину и Томми. Что сделала Элли? Убила беременную Мел, Оуэна и всех друзей Эбби. Игра показывает, насколько жестока и одержима Элли, игра показывает, что она не святая, и как бы вы, игроки, её не любили, она человек, который слепо убивает, как животное, но такое понятное и близкое животное. В общем, кто хейтит концовку, скорее всего уже был с предвзятым мнением о игре. Она действительно трагична, но реальна. Она должна была так закончиться.     Naughty Dog have done it again. Even to play this just for the story this is phenomenal. Game play is terrifying (in a great way) and you truly feel like you are in a zombie apocalypse.

Cus you know the TLOU community love nothing more than **** gameplay mechanics and a very abhorant story! truly the best game ever! I completely believe the critics are right and totally werent paid money for their bs!

    Why are people such cry-babies? This story sticks to it's roots by making realistic choices and decisions with the writing. People don't live forever and you cant be the hero, forever. The game play is generation defining and is very rewarding, the game will either reward you or punish you based on your decisions and I love this dynamic. I've overall enjoyed the entirety of the game.

It’s looking gorgeous, gameplay is stunning and the plot... it’s definitely very mature and different to everything I’ve played in my last 20 years of gaming. I suppose most of those people are childish trolls who have issues with topics which are beyond their ability to reason!

    "changing"/"disregard for" characters mentioned so much in other reviews is code for "I don't like gay people". It is also incorrect because the character was always gay and nothing in the first game suggested otherwise.     An incredible and technically perfect game. The story compared to the previous one moves in another direction that may or may not like it. The power of the title lies in the difficult choices that have been addressed by bringing back some current themes within the video game. Before giving a judgment try to live the title. An almost masterpiece.

    I'd say it's masterpiece. The story is not about revenge. It's actually a piece of art telling people how to treat the hatred in their heart. Good game, good story, especially for us who are in this chaotic 2020. Let's not to be so mean to each other.

The game is an authentic wonder, killing one of the most beloved characters in video games was a risky bet, most of the negative notes are governed by the latter. At first I also fell into rage, but upon discovering the true reason for his murder and the things that we ourselves did in the previous video game, everything is justified ... However, I am not pleased that we use so long Abby's person. I believe that in this aspect one could leave only the missions of remembering the past. I’m not just some fan that’s watched a bunch of YouTube videos coming here to throw around ‘SJW’ and give it a 1/10. This game is great. Not comparable to the first, but great. The main big gripe I see with most reviews is the death of Joel. If you played the game, you would know why Joel met his demise. Put yourself in Abby’s shoes. If someone killed your father, you would go out of your way to end this persons life. That is exactly what Abby did, and in a way she’s justified in her actions even though I do have love for Joel. Joel killed her father. Abbys entire backstory is painted throughout the entirety game, so you come to understand why she feels the way she does. At the beginning of the game, I hated her. But throughout the game as you play through her sections, her backstory is fleshed out so you get a better understanding of her actions and reasonings. I came to like her almost as much as Ellie by the final scene. Joel was selfish for killing everyone at the hospital to save Ellie, but I also understand why he did. Also, for the plotholes. The only one I keep seeing is about Ellie wearing a gas mask. Again, if you played the game, you would understand because this is brought up about halfway through the game. Joel tells Ellie to always keep her mask on near spores Incase they run into another survivor. Ellie’s immunity is still a secret in this game. Towards the end of the game, after playing as both Ellie and Abby for hours and hours, I came to sympathize with the both of them. They were both doing what they thought was right because of the death of a loved one, even though Abby kept sparing Ellie’s life but Ellie could not let it go and kept going on her revenge quest which eventually in the end made her lose most things she loved. I felt bad for Ellie towards the end, but that was the predicament she kept putting herself and the people around her in over and over again. Such an interesting question is brewing for me for those who put negative ratings: “Are you **** ?!” Where do you think the game got worse? Graphic arts? Neil and the team sat for long nights, worked, quarreled, freaked out, left the project, someone quarreled with their families. And all so that you enjoy all the details of the game. Artists worked tirelessly so that gamers can enjoy each texture game !!! Do you even understand what kind of work this is ?! The guys tore the ass only so that the whole environment pulled you into the game itself. Game mechanics? Everything remained as it was in the first part, with additional improvements.     The story is obviously the main problem for people who have been excited about this for a long time. I’m seeing a lot of complaints about ‘LGBT propaganda’ and ‘SJW fanboys’. Having experienced the entire plot, I really don’t see that. Ellie is gay; this was established way back in the DLC for the first game. Her romantic interest is defined by that.

    As for the SJW stuff... There’s literally one small issue about Ellie’s sexuality, and that gets resolved almost immediately. Other than that, the ethical side of homosexuality is never explored. If you have a fundamental problem with gay people, you’ll hate this. If not, you’ll be just fine.

    As for the actual plot itself, it’s very good, but weaker than the first game. Naughty Dog have tried to write a scathing and uncomfortable commentary on the so-called ‘cycle of violence’ (sic) and how severe, lingering trauma can cause even the best of us to do truly horrific things. Hate begets hate. The ‘traumatic event’ is very, very controversial. You might hate the choice ND made here. I thought it was a bold move.
    What the game amounts to is, on the surface, a good old fashioned revenge story - but the various intertwining story points and character defects lead to something far more subtle, complex, and dark, with real weight and consequences to your actions. That being said, it can often crack under the weight of its own ambition - the first game was comparatively very simple, and morally easy-to-follow for the most part. This led to a very satisfying plot with an ending we’re still talking about today. TLOU2 doesn’t quite deliver the goods on this count. It’s a much better and stronger story than most are claiming, but it’s not really up there with the first. Also, certain major characters are far more fleshed out than others, which can affect the emotional impact of the game.

    I won’t spoil any story points, but the second half of the game came as a major surprise to me and it took me a while to get used to. I definitely didn’t enjoy it as much as the first half. It certainly lends a lot of weight to the choices already made, but it shouldn’t have been as long and drawn out as it was. I personally would have much happier with a shorter, more focussed experience.
    Also, the jumping back-and-forth in time started getting on my wick after a while. It feels like padding.

    Now that that’s out of the way, the other stuff:

    The graphics and sound design are incredible. One of the best-looking and best sounding games not just on PS4, but on any platform. Play with headphones if you can. The voice acting and motion capture are amazing. The lighting and animation are as close to perfect as I’ve ever seen. You can really, really feel the brutality and messiness of the violence in this game.
    The gameplay is very strong. It plays very like the first game, but far smoother and more organic. The stealth mechanics have been tweaked nicely. The level design is very open and rewards exploration, both for supplies and for getting the drop on your enemies. The levels are far larger and less linear, it’s mostly up to you wether you want to sneak or tank it. Both play styles are catered to and well-balanced.

    The infected are very similar to the first game. The new types of infected fit into the world very well.
    The two factions operate quite differently from each other, leading to more variation going against the living than in TLOU1.

    They really oversold the ‘almost open-world’ stuff. While there is one particularly massive area in the game, I don’t think it’s available beyond a certain very early part of the plot, and there’s nowhere near as much exploration to be done in this part as you’d hope. Think Madagascar in Uncharted 4. For the vast majority of the game it’s the same as the first in that you move through one area to another, and the game closes behind you. It’s a series of sequenced levels, according to the plot’s needs. Honestly, that’s a good thing - tight and tense at all times.

    Final word: It’s definitely worth buying and playing. If you liked how the first game plays, you’ll love that part. It’s really up to you wether or not you like the plot, or the characters’ choices. I personally liked them even though I often didn’t agree with the characters. I loved the ending, but totally understand why people wouldn’t. Play it and make your own mind up.

    TLDR:
    Graphics/sound/acting: 10/10
    Gameplay: 9/10
    Story: 7/10
    Loads of fun to play. You might not like the plot, but it’s a bold risk. A major technical achievement. A bit too long. If you’re still not sure, wait for sale prices. Beware; Lesbians involved.    … Expand

    Another masterpiece from Naughtydog! The gameplay loop is engaging and enjoyable the entire time, the environments are open enough to make you feel like you have freedom. The visuals are the best I've ever seen, and it's using 7 year ild hardware. The story is amazing too! Telling an heartfelt story of revenge and how anyone can be seen as a villain when you only get half the story.

    When I first played The Last Of Us in 2013 for the Playstaion 3, I was like 19 and thought it was the best game on the planet. Now, I've played it 2 in the last two weeks; once for the store, and once for the Grounded Mode gameplay. There were things that I still LOVED about the game, like how fluid it was and how well written/spoken the characters were. While Uncharted's Nathan Drake was a treasure hunting serial murderer with no regard for human life, Joel was a tired, grieving man who felt as though everything is did was to protect and survive. But while Uncharted has a ton of monotonous climbing (albeit with a few scripted moments to keep things fresh), The Last of Us had annoying Ladders and "drag this over here" moments to pad gameplay. It's kind of ridiculous how often you had to pick up a ladder just to literally walk it two **** inches from its destination. AND THE PALLETS, OH GOD THE PALLETS... But the combat and story is where the game shined. The shooting and aim was pretty rough, but the combat was still one of the best experiences I've had in gaming even after 7 years of playing better games. While it couldn't hold a candle to the recent God Of War, it was so crisp when youd throw a molotov at a small group, dip behind cover and choke a guy out, take out a guy from across the room with a boy and then finish of the last guy with good old-fashioned fists. It was nice how every fight felt a little different. Sometimes youd push a guy off some stairs for a kill, or smash their head in if there were against a wall. It was brutal, intense, and impressive when you think about how far this game pushed the limits of the PS3. And the story was so incredible, it really didn't need a sequel, even though fans of the game, including my 19 year old self, really wanted one. Watching Joel go from brooding and dark to tragically optimistic after a year with Ellie was tear-jerking, while watching a Ellie go from snarky and quick-witted to tragically hopeless because of Joel was gloomy and perfect.

    The Last of Us 2 is amazing.

    While the story isn't amazing, I think it needed to happen. The was playing the first game with my roomate in the area, and she constantly was like, "So do these characters just get to walk away from all this with no consquences whatsoever?" And it raised a great point. After beating the original Last of Us, questions I hadn't considered as a teen were raised now. Could Joel just walk into a hospital, kill a ton of innocent people, and walk out of it to start a happy life with Ellie and not be held accountable in any way shape or form? And if he could, is that really how life works? Would Ellie forgive him for robbing her of being a sacrifice for a cure to an apocalypse? What would the dynamic be after that?

    The Last of Us: Part II answers a lot of questions and raises a few more, and while the story takes a bit longer to wrap up than needed to, the overall message is clear.

    I've heard a lot of review talk about how they became unphased and deafed by the gore and blood this game offers. And honestly, get the **** over it. If you could watch scenes from The Walking Dead, or play Mortal Kombat and go "awh man, I gotta see what happens next," then dont tell me about how the gore was too much for you. It wasn't that bad, I've seen much worse, and if games are designed with the idea that they will become increasingly cinematic and realistic then all this game does in the realism department is take a big step forward. If bloody games bother you, maybe play Pokemon. They have new DLC.

    To people saying the characters don't make good choices, and that Ellie isn't the same. No, of course Ellie isn't the **** same. And if you take time to consider the fact that she was dragged across the country at the age of 14 by a guy in this 50's who's capable of murdering hundred of zombies and people with only his fists and a few handcrafted shivs ALL so that she could find out she's actually NOT able to save the planet from a disease shes immune to, you might be able to understand why. I haven't come across anything that made me go "now why would they do that."

    Also, if you watched the trailer of Ellie kissing a girl and went "why is Naughty Dog pushing a gay agenda on me?" then just don't play this game. Its cast is a lot more colorful and progressive than any game thats ever been out, and if youre upset by that idea then save your money. But in my opinion, it was going to happen eventually and I'm glad Naughty Dog got to steer it in a nice "not in your face but this is happening so get over it" direction.

    I wasn't HAPPY about some of the things that happened in this game, but I understood why they did. I think its time to open your eyes and stop thinking about what you would have WANTED to happen, and what actually makes sense.    … Expand

The gameplay, the story, the acting... all excellent. Naughty dog really are the best game developers in the business. Oh yeah and for the people who have a problem with the “major death”... get over it. It’s the developers story and they gave it justice. Absolutely heart wrenching.     I went through only part of the game, but I can already say that the game is super! All those 0 and 1 unreasonable hate, do not pay attention to them. Have a nice game!

    Wonderful game with beautiful graphics. The human element in the previous game was carried over brilliantly. Perfect!

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
