This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to speak about the game and give it the most objective assessment, as I am a very long-time fan of this series of games and games Studio Naughty Dog. You can talk about it a lot, but I will start with all the provocative plot. 1. Plot and narration: I adequately accepted the main character's relationship and subsequent LGBT scenes. The fact is that the consequence of the cause of revenge is completely empty. This is an accident! If Joel hadn't found Abby's father, then Abby wouldn't have come looking for him, and everyone would have been happy. Joel had killed too many people along the way, and surely all the children of his murdered parents wouldn't follow him?! The ending is very confusing and does not give a clear answer. Or just Ellie takes too long to come up with this answer, for which they built an entire location. I have no complaints about the very last moment. Ellie realized that it was time to stop. That violence won't get her anywhere and that she should just move on. But she realizes this too late, and the audience absorbs it and remains with the open ending. 1.1.Narrative: The Last of Us-was the most breakthrough project in the history of video games. It was perfect for everything from building locations, to minor dialogues (of course, the soundtrack, story and gameplay in addition), but when I think about this game, I imagine one big journey with a large number of different characters. And for me personally the problem was the fact that a large part of the game depends on one great location - Seattle. And all the characters are shown to us there, but unfortunately they are almost not disclosed, such as the antagonist Isaac, who was randomly removed as much as possible. It seems to me that the screenwriter of "wild West World" mostly ruined the project, rather than improved it.! 7/10! . 2. the Soundtrack. Disappoint you. It has become much smaller. For those who played in the first part., remember the last moment with David on the penultimate location. Everything was perfect and professional in terms of cinematography. A perfectly set stage and music playing at the right moment, and most importantly WHAT kind of music. Even when you normally listen to OST The Last of Us, every piece gives you goosebumps or tears. There was almost no such thing here. Perhaps Gustavo Santaolaglia has outlived everything, but something very remarkable was not.! 7.5/10! 3. Graphics and technical features: THIS is THE most TECHNOLOGICAL GAME that exists at the moment. Comparison with RDR2: RDR2 was done for about 7 years. It is also a very technological game and still in the open world. And TLoU Part ll was created for 6 years, but without an open world. I can assume that due to the limited location (although they are already huge there), you can work out every detail in the game and NAUGHTY DOG did it. 9.5/10 . 4. Gameplay: good old stealth action, only many times improved. The game can work out a lot of game situations. And this is one of the main rules of gameplay. Shooting is worked out to the smallest detail and with all the tin. But again, they have already lost the concept. They introduced some unusual mechanics, but the stealth concept itself did not change at all. 9/10. VERDICT: The Last of Us Part ll is an Arthouse story with a mediocre script, but with the best gameplay and graphics at the time of 2020. 8.25/10. I will put 9, since the score of 4.4 is undeserved for such a good game Expand

The Last o f Us Part II is certainly a game that will mark the eighth generation of consoles as one of the best games offered to us. The game maintains its human and emotional atmosphere to tell an extremely violent but necessary story, not only for Ellie but also for the new character Abby. History certainly speaks of revenge but, moreover, it speaks of the feeling that carries such path and its consequences, both physical and psychological, as its creator (Neil Druckmann) described, a cycle of violence. The game has beautiful graphics, impeccable mechanics and, there is no way not to comment, a spectacular sound mix, both with its music (composed by Gustavo Santaolalla) and with the sound of the environment and of each action that the characters perform, leaving the experience even more intense.

It makes me sad and frustrated to see the negative criticisms for this game, especially those that refer only to the fact of the sexual orientation of some characters, but the disgust for the plot and the decisions made by the characters makes it seem that many people did not play the entire game, or they played expecting something more artificial. They forget that in this game four years passed after the events of the first part, and that lives changed for several reasons during that time, some for the better and others for the worse. Once again I comment, this game is completely human and it is necessary for the player to be open to explore the feelings that the game provides. Both those of anger and those of peace, even because we find more than one person, who live their lives completely different from each other, but their ability to have emotions is what equals each other and in the end is what matters most.

I'm 14 hours into the game and although the story is more "straight forward" than the first one, it's not bad as people are putting it at to be. It sure starts slows but after about the 8-10 hour mark it sure picks up pace. The graphics, audio and gameplay are stunning. Impossible to rate this game lower than a 8.

Expand

People are too used to shallow stories in which happen exactly what they want to happen and can't appreciate what is out of their cone of sight. In this story, there is not good and evil; characters are humans, not unbeatable and perfect superheroes and as humans they make mistakes, they cry, they are scared, they have weaknesses. The world narrated is cruel and people in it too, main characters included. Fan boys have this toxic addiction in which their preferred character can't die, can't make mistakes, it's perfect and infallible. Reality it's not like this, and this game it's realistic. In this game there is blood and anger, broken bones and tears, people die brutally not "elegantly" doing heroic acts, like the most boring of the clichè. The story is super mature and yes, controversial, but only in a positive way. It's not for everyone, and if you can't appreciate this level of narrative, probably you should aim for something that is simpler. Expand

I understand why the tone might have turned off a lot of people, considering it came out during a dark and difficult year for most people, but I think in retrospect, it will be considered a classic. The game has some interesting and complicated characters and the writing feels natural and real. My only complaints are with some of the story beats, but they are kind of nitpicky. The ending wasn’t that bad and reading some of the reviews here you would think it was a Game of Thrones level atrocity, but it wasn’t. It was perfectly effective at conveying a feeling of bittersweet hope in a dire world and explores how we deal with grief and finding purpose in life.

As for gameplay, I have absolutely no complaints. The shooting and melee combat feels great and the enemy encounters can be tense and rewarding. You can play it however you want – you can go in guns blazing, sneak around and lay traps while silently pick off each enemy, or just run away and avoid combat altogether. The pacing is great, going from exploration and solving environmental puzzles to enemy filled areas and then some action-packed sequences are sprinkled in, but I can see how the repetition of the formula can get old for some people. It’s the pretty standard Naughty Dog formula. The environments are beautiful (even when they are grotesque) and the level design is amazing. The world truly feels lived in and adds to the immersion. I’ve heard some complaints that it was too long, but I kind of disagree. It took me about 24 hours to beat, but I mostly gave up on stealth near the end. I also think the accessibility and difficulty options were fantastic and let me fine tune the difficulty when I was having a hard time.

The story is also great in my opinion, but is seems to be very polarizing. Without spoiling anything, there are some characters you initially hate and may grow to love as you spend more time with them or you may find these character's stories uninteresting, like myself. On the surface, it seems like a simple revenge story, but it has more layers than that. It's about people living with the choices they've made, dealing with loss, finding purpose, and laying the past to rest. It’s a game that has stuck with me after finishing and I’m still thinking about it days later.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely adored TLOU1. I wasn't sure that I wanted this story to be continued. The thing that made the ending of the previous game so perfect was the glaring lack of choices that the player is given: in the hands of another game developer, the player might have been given a binary decision about whether to save Ellie or to save the rest of the world. Instead, the player is forced down a path, to act against their better judgment, enacting Joel’s selfishness and continuing the global nightmare of fungal zombie apocalypse.

Part II takes that design choice and expands on it. Throughout the majority of the game, the player must make the onscreen characters do things that the player themselves does not want to do. It is uncomfortable.

This game is not light-hearted escapism. It’s heavy. It’s also a riveting piece of fiction. With TLOU2, NaughtyDog managed to pull off something remarkable: they continue this story in a way that feels like a natural consequence of the previous game's ending. The storytelling and dialogue of this complex, layered epic are unparalleled in the medium of video games. The onscreen performances are so real that you don't feel like you're watching animated characters on the screen, you feel like you're watching real people. You see their micro-expressions, see hope and despair in their eyes as they navigate the extraordinary circumstances in which they have been placed.

Almost every character you meet is layered and complex. I say “almost every character” because there is one character, Jesse, who felt as though he didn't have enough screen time for me to understand his relationship with Ellie. Given how nuanced all the other characters are, this is a relatively minor complaint. Ellie is quieter, sadder, angrier this time around, and that feels righteous to me, given the deeply traumatic last several years of her life. Abby's character is impeccably drawn as well. At the beginning of the game I absolutely despised her. As I came to learn more about her motivations, I couldn't help but sympathize with her. As I got to see her relationship unfold with new characters Yara and Lev, I saw her genuinely caring for them, and I started to want a happy ending for her.

I know that a lot of folks are upset that Joel died. What did you expect? He did terrible things in TLOU1. He lives in a brutal world in which people die unexpectedly all the time. His death is MEANT to be shocking and upsetting. That love that you feel towards him, sadness at his death, the anger at this new muscley Abby character is the perfect impetus for Ellie's revenge story. And the fact that he was killed by the daughter of the surgeon he murdered in cold blood at the end of the previous game felt, to me, both unexpected and inevitable. His past misdeeds were always going to catch up with him.

The flashbacks peppered throughout the game add layers to Ellie, Joel, and Abby's characters and flesh out their motivations. The astronaut sequence in particular felt like a beautiful send-off for Joel and left me with a lump in my throat. These flashbacks provide the narrative some room to breathe in between its major chapters.

And you will need room to breathe, because good lord this gameplay is INTENSE. Each encounter is a puzzle in which the player has to figure out how to get past all the enemies in front of them with exactly the inventory that you already have. You’re subjected to edge-of-your-seat, white-knuckle gameplay that alternately had me yelping with horror and grinning with sadistic pleasure when I executed an enemy. Moments later, I would feel guilt in my complicity with Ellie's acts of heinous violence as I heard the shrieks of dying enemies.

It’s a bummer that the enemy AI is kind of dumb on the default difficulty setting because that hinders the game’s ability to shine as a stealth experience. I would definitely recommend playing on Hard difficulty to help the stealth elements of this game truly come to life.

This game bleeds polish from every pore. The visuals are nothing short of astonishing, and Seattle is beautifully designed and realized. NaughtyDog cleverly placed significant story events within iconic buildings in real-life Seattle (the Seattle aquarium, the Ferris wheel) which lends a wonderful sense of geography to the narrative. I currently live in Seattle. It was uncanny to walk through a post-apocalyptic version of my city.

The ending is sad, uncomfortable, bleak. As I reflected on that final conversation between Ellie and Joel, that line from The Dark Knight kept coming to mind: “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” This journey made me feel strong emotions for these characters. At the end of the day, I think that's exactly what good art is supposed to do: make me feel, not necessarily make me feel good. NaughtyDog made bold and risky choices here. Frankly that's something that I wish more developers would do.

Just finished the game and thought I'd share my opinion, the score is just my thoughts on how much I enjoyed the game, CHARACTERS were okay however some choices were really bad, playin as Abby was really bad in my opinion. The STORY was fine but the ending made me feel bad to Ellie and the reason she left Abby live was really weird. VIsuals and Gameplay were amazing, the new improvements in the combat and stealth were top-notch. The reason for the score is cuz stories in videogames for me is really not that important as gameplay and graphics, so there you have it.

Now the backlash from the fans were expected but people should try to be less biased when playin their games so their opinions stay honest, balance is good, give it a 0 or a 10 as long as you stay unbiased then it's fine, thanks for your time.

The discourse around this game has been toxic due to fan outrage some of the story choices made by Naughty Dog, however I encourage those who might think be hesitant to play this game to go into it with an open mind. IMHO this is not just one of the best video games of the generation but maybe one of the best ever. So ignore the toxicity around this game on the internet and play it for yourself and I guarantee you this game will move you. It’s almost hard to even call this a video game but rather a work of art that will ask uncomfortable questions to you as a player and really causes you to meditate on its themes and message. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I did in my roughly 20 hours of playing it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story was engaging and had plenty of heart within it. I thought some of the plot points were great and was a display of how low, revenge can bring us down. The flashbacks shown gave context and filled in the 4 year gap and had some of the most touching parts of the game and contrasted with the visceral and brutal revenge narrative. Gameplay has plenty of freedom when approaching each encounter, exploration felt rewarding as it gave notes for side stories and supplies to help with upgrades, ammo and crafting. World design and level design is phenomenal, the music is somber and but also was blood pumping tensity. My main gripe is the momentum lost at the end of Ellie’s section of the game and switches to Abby’s story, however I became invested with her drama and found her story more interesting than Ellie’s which in the end left me wanting both characters to survive as they both have lost nearly everything. Abby’s section should’ve been trimmed a bit but I understand why it was there. I still really enjoyed the game. 22 hrs of gametime Expand

It all makes sense. We never see the other side of the story, Abby's dad was the head surgeon that Joel killed saving Ellie, which most of humanity would agree was a selfish decision. A normally good person, Abby becomes angry and revenge-driven, training for the next 4 years to become the person who would kill Joel for what he did, and she finally got her chance and brutally took it. In the time following that, she questions her own humanity and what she's become, she doesn't feel better after killing Joel on the inside, and on the outside, everyone sees her as this monster. She gets an opportunity to redeem herself by helping Yara and Lev, 2 defected Scars, ultimately risking her life by traversing a decades old ground zero hospital with the oldest, deadliest Infected inside and then escaping the Island of the Scars, betraying her own faction in the process. All that to finally come back to the Aquarium and find her best friend (ex-lover) and his baby momma dead, lying in their own blood. Little did she know, all her friends' recent deaths were the consequence of killing Joel in front of Ellie, who had just found a new purpose in her life by making the decision the night before to reconcile with Joel...

Rewind - Joel saves Ellie, lies to her about what happened and they both start a new life in Jackson over the next 4 years. Joel finally confesses to Ellie what he did and for the last 2 years before the events of this game, Ellie doesn't want anything to do with Joel and avoids him. Finally the night before the events of this game, Ellie talks to Joel and despite him taking away her life's "purpose" to potentially become the cure, she still loves him and finds new purpose in choosing to forgive him and start rebuilding their relationship. In comes Abby the next day, who dishes out her long-awaited, brutal revenge against Joel for killing her father, dismantling the Fireflies and potentially robbing humanity of a cure. This event basically "robs" Ellie again of a purpose and she turns into what Abby became all those years ago, angry and revenge-driven. Ellie incites allies and spends the course of the game hunting down all who were present at Joel's death, killing many of Abby's friends along the way (and her dog), including a woman she didn't know was pregnant, which made Ellie sick to her stomach.

Fast Forward - Abby, feeling redeemed from brutally killing Joel by helping Yara and Lev, finds her best friend (ex-lover) and his baby momma dead, lying in their own blood. She tracks Ellie back to the theater and becomes rage-fueled again, cause from her perspective, Joel was the bad guy and got what he deserved and she let Ellie live, not knowing Ellie would come after her and kill all her friends. During the confrontation, she kills Jessie, shoots Tommy in the face, beats Ellie to a pulp, and if not for Lev reminding her of her own humanity, she would have slit a pregnant Dina's throat, as payback for her dead pregnant friend. Ultimately, she let's Dina and Ellie live, and leaves with Lev to Santa Barbara to find the Fireflies.

Fast Forward even more - Ellie, still experiencing PTSD and feeling she owes Joel by killing Abby, travels to Santa Barbara. Abby doesn't want to fight anymore, but Ellie insists, thinking it's the only way she can be at peace and avenge Joel. In the end, Ellie is about kill Abby, but decides not to, ending the cycle of violence after realizing that Abby's death won't "fix" anything for her and reminding herself of forgiveness i.e. Joel. Abby and Ellie go their separate ways.

Joel murdered Abby's dad saving Ellie,
then Abby murders Joel in front of Ellie,
then Ellie murders most of Abby's friends,
then Abby murders Jessie, shoots Tommy in the face and almost murders a pregnant Dina, but decides not to,
then Ellie almost murders Abby, but decides not to, ending their cycle of violence.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve never felt so emotionally challenged or invested in a game than when I played the Last of Us Part II. I found myself crying at multiple points in the game, often being moved during a scene as simple as Joel playing the guitar to a young Ellie. I was often forced to do heinous things as Ellie, and I somehow managed to be Team Abby by the end of the game. I even had to put it down for a few days when the game switched to playing as Abby because I didn’t know how you could reasonably expect me to play as the killer of a man as beloved as Joel. But the further I got along in the game, the more and more I came to sympathize with Abby. Ultimately, all characters in the game were deeply flawed, but you still loved all of them in their own way. In the end, I recognized the senselessness of the cycle of violence and the importance of making a conscious decision to end it. And I have to say I have never felt so emotional in a finale. I’ll never forget the deep grief I felt as I was attacking Abby and the ultimate catharsis of letting her escape with Lev. Please do yourself a favor and play this game. Expand

Based on trophy statistics, only 25% of players (as of 6/27/2020) have finished the game. Let that sink in while you read this...

    - If you are looking for a game that gives the player the choice to change the outcome, this isn't for you.

    - Want a game that's wrapped up nicely with a bow that leaves you feeling the stress and tension resolved? Definitely not your game.

Last of Us Part II is a story of revenge and its consequences, pain and regret. It doesn't pull any punches, and doesn't let the player feel like the "good guy" for their actions. There are no true heroes or villains, every person in the game has their story and life. So many games have you playing a protagonist you're meant to live vicariously through. They make you feel like you're the hero, and any dire actions you must make to achieve your goal is justified by what you've set out to accomplish.

One of the biggest points of controversy in this story is actually why I praise it so much. Having the player see first hand the consequences of their actions gives wait to the story's message. Just because you like a character and have spent so much time with them doesn't mean they are inherently good, just as playing against another character doesn't make them bad. Ellie and Abby have both hurt innocent people and have brutally murdered at the expense of the innocent. They have also helped their enemies, friends, and strangers. These characters are human, they are imperfect. Not heros. Not villains.

Let's tackle the elephant in the room: Joel's death. I felt this wan inevitable. Joel is the sole reason the world does not have a cure. The Fireflies wanted it, Ellie wanted it, but he couldn't let it happen. Just because he was (relatively) good to Ellie doesn't mean he is safe from the world around him. Eventually his actions were bound to catch up to him, and it just happened sooner than most players expected.

I won't dive into the technical aspects of the game, as it seems everyone agrees that this is a visual masterpiece. Gameplay is solid, and players are given solid choices to be as stealthy or violent as they care to be. I'm not gonna touch the "SJW" non-controversy as it in no way detracts from the game, and it's a lazy argument primarily made by those that actually haven't finished the story.

I highly recommend the game. I do feel like there's a bit of room to expand upon stealth, and that's the only reason I don't give it a perfect 10.

It is a good game. I can understand why people get frustrated with where the plot went to, etc., but to say that the game is terrible is just unfair. There are no reasons not to play the sequel.

this game is not about sjw or lgtb. it's about emptiness after losing a loved one. it's about anger and rage. it's about being blood thirsty. it's about empathy and lives. it's about redemption. and most important thing is, it's about legacy.

The gameplay was refined but I'm still not the biggest fan somehow. The cycle of human enemies, exploration, zombie enemies, action sequence and emotional flashback are varied but felt formulaic overall, maybe because of the linear nature of the game.

The story was good for a videogame story, lots of progression, but I did not like all the timejumps. Also some things were not that believable to me and it is in conflict with the gameplay. And in the end it felt kind of pointless, even though many differnt things happened.

But overall it is a very refined game with lots of varied settings.

Most claims I heard about the game were either false or seriously dumb. I promise you that any game could have been hurt with this much hate coming at it before it even arrived. If this game is too much for the community, that's just sad. It's the most emotionally and narratively complex game I ever played and it deserves praise for being different, not hate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was a weird experince for me. The gameplay was enjoyable and I found a 8/10 or a 9/10 for me. The graphics were great and i would give them a 9/10. The story was maybe a 7/10 experience for me, the start and the middle of the game were fine, but the ending i didn’t really like. (now there will be spoilers) The ending would have been way better if the game just ended on Dina and Ellie living happy lives but the part of the story where Ellie went to hunt Abby down was in my opinion very unnecessary. The fact that Ellie didn’t even kill Abby made it even more pointless, and in my opinion that part of the story could have been completely left out. The ending was unnecessarily bad when we could have had, like i said before a happy ending with Ellie and Dina living happy lives. Expand

People are used to heroic deaths, dramatic and with excessive tributes in a certain way they are easier to adopt since they are fictional and children's stories, but this game, being more realistic, shows that it does not matter who you are or what you have done, the Death can come in essential and unimaginable ways and above all it shows that your actions have consequences. I dare say that for this type of detail this second installment surpasses the first, however due to the different endings many prefer TLOU1. Regarding the end, whether the objective of revenge has been fulfilled or not, the end, whatever it may be, will remain the same, a sad and empty end, which shows us what can cause our desires for revenge; We hurt, affect and lose people, we move them away from us and even worse, we ourselves lose the essence that characterized us as human beings or, as people, revenge will certainly not make things change or improve much less will cause your story is better, you cannot change what happened and the best signature to pay tribute to someone is being that all that. This game is exactly the same as the first installment, a death at the beginning and a trip totally in vain due to grief.
The game is really good, I could say it is a work of art. The gameplay, gameplay, mechanics, graphics, is superior to many games, I dare say that the best game of the moment.
Lastly, I am sure that many of those who gave a negative opinion have not even bought the game, obviously much less have played it, and all this controversy seems to me to be due to the large number of spoilers that some streamers emitted with inconclusive, erroneous and confusing information, You are the ones who can try it, play it, and have your own opinions.

¿Propaganda? De ningún modo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to recall a game that made me as emotionally invested as the last of us 2. It's all down to a narrative that can only find it's true footing in video games, as it's predecessor the plot drives the story forward but it twists it's ending via character development.

There are a few things I can safely say before spoiling any of the story so I will just point out a few characteristics of the game:

Naughty Dog has improved once again on it's combat mechanics, the fight and flight approach has been enhanced and it's at the core of the last of us 2 gameplay. It gives you many tools to accomplish your goals and in doing so offers players many ways to approach combat. If you enjoyed the combat in games like Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us, the combat here will feel even fresher and better.

I don't care so much about graphics, but this game is impressive in it's presentation. It pushes PS4 to it's limit and delivers environments filled with details bringing a sense of immersion to the player. The cutscenes are impressive and they help hammer the narrative home.

    SPOILERS FROM HERE ONWARDS

It's impossible to speak about the story without going into spoiler territory so here it goes: From the beginning of the journey you find yourself in a revenge story, one of our favourite characters in gaming history, Joel, is killed by Abby a freshly introduced character that we briefly get to play. The game then sets you and Abby down an intersecting path, where you are pitted against each other for revenge. When you finally find her the game takes a huge break to set you in the shoes of Abby, we play as her for a long time and we start to understand her a little by little.

Thanks to the unique ways that games can tell stories, we slowly see how Abby herself starts to grow on us, we see that much like Joel she is jaded and going through the motions after experiencing grief. Through saving a couple of scars we see her humanity and start to strongly empathize with her as a character.

I initially doubted this was going to work for me, at first I felt so much rage playing through Ellie's story, but when I was in Abby's shoes she started to slowly grow on me, from saving Lev and Yara, seeing her relationship with her dad, going to an infected zone to secure medical supplies, beating a huge monstrosity; I finally understood better the side of her story.

At the end I didn't want Ellie or Abby to die and I wanted each one to have a good life. I felt I went through a lot emotionally and it's all thanks to an ambitious narrative that pays off.

To some of the criticism that I've seen:

LGBTQ+ agenda: I don't think there is a political stand on this, the game is just portraying sexuality how it is. To anyone complaining that LGBT characters are only present in the sequel, I have to remind them of Bill who is clearly gay in part 1 and the DLC also shows Ellie's story and she's always been into girls.

Narrative: I understand those who feel like Joel death was too much, I think that is the reason that the game set you emotionally on the same revenge path as Ellie and it worked incredibly well for me. Joel death is caused by his past actions, not only killing the doc and the fireflies but also the fact that he gets softer through the story of the Last of Us, through caring for Ellie, till the point that trusting other people causes him to lose his life.

The ending worked incredibly well for me, the fact that the plot doesn't finish with Ellie killing Abby is a a great subversion of expectation, we as players don't want to see Abbie die, and it's Joel's memories that stop her. In the end because of the fight with Abby she loses her ability to play guitar, but it's maybe what she needed in order to learn to live with the past. In a weird way it's thanks to Ellie that Abby and Lev end up surviving and we are weirdly thankful for it.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
