However, after spending half the game, we are "forced" to play directly with Abby, but not just a flashback or a few hours, they are from 10 to 12 hours, although Abby's character is well built and justified, I don't want to live the experience with her, I chose Ellie and that's why I bought the game; They force you to face it, everything is at an excellent level but the feeling that the game leaves you at the end is angry and sad ... I hope I can choose Ellie again in some time. Expand

Not to spoil anything all I say is - the story of this game is the epitome of the phrase "Every coin has two sides".
The technical aspects are also worth mentioning - game feels real even in the most unbelievable parts. From visuals to the sound and animation - every single artist who worked on this game deserves the highest praise.

I hope Cyberpunk 2077 will deliver, cause if not, then The Last Of Us Part II is easily my game of the year ;)

A disappointment when looking back at the first one, but still a good game. The pacing of the story was really bad for the first couple of hours, but once you actually get into Seattle and the game starts throwing more enemies at you the game becomes incredibly fun and hard to put down. This is the first game i give a personal rating of 100 / 100 points! Its perfect!

    *SPOILER*

i wonder how many people are homophobic. 50% of all people are not able to understand the thoughts of the characters. that shows how much the mind of our world has changed. Lots of homophobic, creativeless players who do not understand that such a harsh world as that of "the last of us" changes people. Ellie had such a tough life and always struggled, so it's no wonder she turned homosexual. Abby is very muscular for the same reason. Lev is "transgender" because he was frustrated because he didn't became a warrior in his clan.

While playing the game, I completely changed my mind about the characters and the factions. Each faction has its own reasons and none of these factions, except for the slave drivers, are really evil.
At first I hated Abby for what she did to Joel, but there was a moment i realized why Abby did this. Joel killed her lovely father and her friends. . .
The death of Joel hits me hard, but Its part of the tough world, this game shows us.

it's a shame that so many people don't appreciate a masterpiece like this!
your way of thinking is just childish and stupid!

Thank you Naughty Dog for this unique experience!

It’s bigger, crisper and stunningly well realised and fully immersive as a result. The music and understated acting captures the tone of the original and whilst the story will come down to personal preference, the characters are naturally diverse without feeling forced and are well animated. From a technical point of the view the game is a masterpiece.

The story itself is very dark and violent and forces you to change your perspective throughout and your ability to get on board with this and understand what’s being asked you may affect your overall enjoyment. I’m personally on board with most of the creative choices they made here but I do think structurally the way they got there occasionally doesn’t land as well as it could. As a result the games structure is both a strength and also biggest weakness.

Part II is an action adventure with stealth elements. If you’ve played the first game then this won’t be new to you and you know what to expect. Moments of quiet, character driven exploration can give way to stealth encounters, fire fights or even chase sequences. The gorgeous visuals, sound effects and lack of music often makes this an extremely tense and nerve shredding experience and some of the action set pieces can feel appropriately chaotic. The game is also very cinematic and in this regard is very much equal with its predecessor as the pinnacle of cinematic video gaming. Whilst the game generally isn’t open world you do have the option to explore the areas around you and frankly exploration is key as your run through will benefit as you scavenge supplies and craft weapons and other support items. If there’s a criticism to be had with some of the gameplay elements then it would be that the camera doesn’t always position itself right especially in stealth encounters.

Overall this is an impressive continuation from the Last of Us. A technical masterpiece for me no question and whilst structurally it doesn’t land every note, the story lands many notes that I am fully on board with an applaud. The graphics, sound design and gameplay makes this one of the most immersive video gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Be mindful of the hordes of fake negative reviews but also be careful for the handful of fake positive reviews. For me this is definitely a game worth experiencing.

The game is also full of truly intense encounters and set pieces, making for numerous exhilarating moments throughout. All this combines to make for a great video game, but it’s not without its issues.

First of all the game is a good five hours too long, and this could easily have been trimmed from the middle of the game without losing anything of note. For me personally however the biggest issue is the complete disconnect between the gameplay and the message the developers seem intent on telling through the narrative. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s great to see writers attempting something more interesting than ‘good guys Vs bad guys’, but when you’re killing upwards of a hundred people throughout the course of the game (and it’s undeniably fun to do so!) it’s hard to take the messages about violence and revenge seriously. This issue is further magnified by the fact that the player isn’t allowed any choice as to how the story plays out, and as both Ellie and Abby, I often found myself having to carry out actions I simply didn’t want to. The final scene on the beach in particularly just left me feeling uncomfortable…

So, after all the hype and controversy we’re left with a fantastic video game that just bit off a little more than it (or perhaps any AAA video game) could chew in terms of storytelling.

I had strayed from gaming until Covid had relegated people to their houses and I decided to pick this one up. I loved it and felt that it is the first game that truly blurred the line between a video game and an interactive movie. Often times I had taken the point of view that cut scenes detracted from a gaming experience and took away too much time that I would rather be immersed in action. I found myself truly engrossed in this title from beginning to end. I didn't want to put it down. Beautiful graphics, great story, excellent game play, very polished presentation. The Last of Us Part II literally checks all of the boxes. I understand that it was review bombed by those that didn't like the way it handled the main characters that they had grown to love from the first title. Those reviews are completely off base, but to each his own. If you haven't played this and see it sitting in the bargain bin at your local store it is well worth the purchase. Like its predecessor, it was released on the final leg of the console and here, Naughty Dog pulls all the stops: stupendous graphics, great production values and updated game play mechanics. Obviously, it's a must have yet be warned, LOU 2 approaches the apocalypse in a very dour and realistic manner, and it is not a feel good game in any way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved this game. I would rate this game a 10, a 10 does not mean a perfect game. When the credits rolled, I clapped, but then stopped because I realized it was stupid (lol). Then i went to the internet, and It was so overwhelmingly negative, I was questioning If we just played the same game. But it's all a matter of perspective. How I feel/think/interpret is completely different from others. I'm still trying to learn to be ok with the hate this game gets, but to me it's become one of my favorite game of all time.

    Pros:
+ Overall gameplay - vastly improved over the original, feels clunky at first.. but you quickly adjust to it.

    + Graphics/ atmosphere/ sound/level design - a technical masterpiece.

+ Enemy A.I - One of the best and most dynamic enemies I've ever played against.

+ Ellie/ Abbie - both were interesting/ had interesting campaigns. Both were dynamic and unpredictable.

+ Overall story - It was good, without spoiling anything.. one of the most memorable endings.

+ Overall journey- A rollercoaster, that can't be explained unless you get on it. I laughed, almost cried, felt happy, genuinely smiled, felt scared, etc.

    So-So:

    * some side characters were under developed and felt unconsequential

    * They really did Joel dirty here. how it happened (the actual act). I'm ok with why it happened.

    Cons:

    - No multiplayer ( they stated no mp, but it's still my favorite mp).. will wait patiently for factions 2.

    - A few pacing issues ( This game had just as much pacing issues as the first game, but this game is also 10 hours longer). I think there were only 4 sections of the game I dreaded.

    - Very sad game.

To end, no game has me feel so many ranges of emotions in 30 hours. I loved it. The gameplay is dynamic, and always throws something new at you, it never feels stale. The story makes you feel for both sides, and it worked for me by the end. I didn't want ellie to kill abby, even though I cared less about abby even half way through her campaign. It just wasn't worth it in the end. Abby and lev also reminded me of joel and ellie. Basically I empathized with both ellie and abby. ND let us beat the **** out of abby in the end, I was satisfied, and would've been even if I didn't get to. I can honestly say this will be a divisive game, a lot of people will hate it.. but I can confidently defend this game because of MY experience. Masterpiece.

Oh yeah, I guess not being bias towards LBGT, not knowing who anita sarkeshian is, or caring about political agendas probably helped me enjoyed this game more.

Let me start by saying this is a great game, despite the leaks and the childish review bombing, this game is great.... however it isn’t perfect. So lets begin:

Firstly, the graphics are amazing probably as good as or better than anything else we’ve seen on PS4. Whether it’s the lighting or the detailed scenery or how characters look when its raining etc. It just looks stunning. The facial animations of characters is really on point too smirks, smiles, grimaces all seem to be made at the right time and look really realistic.

The next thing I want to point out as a positive is the combat. It builds on from the solid foundations of the first game but goes further. The new weapons are nice, the way you can crawl around in the grass in stealth and be a silent hunter is cool and the way in which we can also get into brutal close quarters combat, dodging and then striking with brutal ferocity.

Another thing I loved is the level of suspense during many parts of the game, navigating dark corridors, trying to stock up and preserve ammo for when that next infected jumps out the wall and makes your heart start racing. For me that’s one of the best parts of the game and I’m sure on the higher difficulties proves really challenging and entertaining.

Finally, one of the really good things about the game is the cinematics. I always found them welcome and worked well with adding to the story. Also I’m not sure if they’re classed as cinematics as such but parts outside or normal gameplay, like a certain car chase/escape had an uncharted-like feel, it was really intense and worked well. QTE’s were also used well in situations like grappling with infected or trying to escape through doors, they added to the drama nicely.

Now, onto the negative and it’s a pretty major one. The storyline, particularly in the second half of the game, isn’t up to scratch. One of the issues I had to begin with was due to the developers choosing to jump around in time (sometimes by a day or sometimes way longer using flashbacks). I struggled to keep focus on what was happening. Secondly, I felt that despite new characters & groups of people emerging, these weren’t really used to develop the story and ended up feeling like filler. I was anticipating things that might happen and they never did. It became apparent to me as the game progressed it was heading down a very narrow tunnel, limiting itself to its core theme of revenge/vengeance. Also travelling to my next destination started to feel a little more tedious, probably because I was becoming increasingly desperate for parts of the plot to come together to pave the way for a new direction... and they never did. Ultimately as the final scenes played out, I felt very little, almost empty, I thought to myself “oh is that it”. I felt very detached from the main characters. I felt so much more could have been done. What was I meant to think and feel? It was a dissatisfying end to a game that looks and plays so damn well. Worth playing for sure because everyone is gonna interpret the story differently and the rest of the game is close to perfect. It’s an unusual game to review, but ultimately it’s a spoilt masterpiece. 7.5/10

I wasn't a fan of the first one but this one really blew me away in all aspects of its design. It's hard to put into words all of the amazing aspects of this game because there are so many. Being a fan of zombie games, I felt this was one of the best zombie games I've played and definitely the best dystopian pandemic game I've played. All aspects of the game flow together so well to make an incredibly realistic and heartfelt experience. The gameplay and plot have a high level of contrast between calm, peaceful moments and highly intense, realistic shootouts between other survivors and infected. Because of this contrast, it makes the intensity even more jarring when it does ramp up. Likewise, when it slows down, you really appreciate the calmness and don't find it to be boring. The technical aspects of the game were superb and made it feel like a PS5 generation game. The visuals, the amount of detail, the lush environments, the water effects, the blades of grass, the great frame-rate, fast start up after death, the seamless transitions between cinematics and gameplay, and the seamless transitions between each large area of the game make this game a technical marvel as well as a visual marvel. The sound design is masterclass with certain music and sound cues at just the right time to highlight cinematic moments, the terrifying cries of infected, changes in weather, and the delivery of npc dialogue. The enemy AI is also top of its class with enemies acting very realistic and flanking you, or throwing explosive projectiles at you and working together to draw you out. The overall plot/story is very jarring and gives you a deep sense of grief, loss, tragedy, anger, sadness, hopeless, and helplessness which at first makes you question the quality of the game and message. The second time experiencing the narrative/plot, I appreciated it a lot more for what it was trying to convey and I think it nailed it. Without giving anything away, I think it really makes you think and feel strongly about giving into intense emotions and the outcomes of those emotions if acted upon. It may not be comfortable, full-filling, or enjoyable, but that is the point. And I think by designing the game like this, it makes the game more realistic and not just a simple black and white tale of vengeance and good versus evil. We get to see the overall picture to why things happened the way they did and not just a one sided view through the protagonist's view. The Last Of Us II is not an easy game to play. It's a game that challenges you in many different ways whether its through its gameplay, setting, characters, or in its narrative. Not everyone will appreciate it for this reason, but if you are looking for an experience that will challenge your view of right and wrong, question your intense emotions, and make you think/feel outside your own perspective, then this is one of those games that will make you do so. As well as transport you to a cruel and unforgiving world where humans act like wild animals and survival and protecting loved one's is everyone's top priority no matter what cost and loss of human civility. What started out as disappointing for me with the way Joel was handled and his demise, came round full circle at the end and left me feeling sad but pleased with how the story rounded out. This game is an emotional rollercoaster, there really is no other way to describe it and only at the end do you get the full picture. It's method of storytelling is creative, captivating and haunting all at the same time. The world Naughty Dog have created feels so real and terrifying. I finished wanting more, the way any great story should. I was hoping for a happy end for Ellie, I hope she returns to Jackson and finds what she is looking for. I would love a third game surrounding Abby and Lev now, I would like to see what happens next for them. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just completed the game. And the more I think about it, the more I think the story succeeded in it's main point. And the main point isn't the one some others are referring to, that violence begets violence or that revenge isn't healthy - plenty of other stories have already done that. It's main point, imho, is that there aren't any good guys or bad guys.
I am hoping the combat is improved by some patches though.

    - I played the last of us 2 to play as Ellie, the Ellie portion of the game is fantastic and just when you are getting into it, you are then made to play as Abby.

    - I do not understand why Naughty Dog thought it would be a good idea to make you play half of the game as a character you severely dislike from the start.

A multiplayer portion of the game would have made the game more valuable and increased replay value.

It's a brutal game. It's tough in many different ways. But I am blown away at what a great job the entire team at Naughty Dog did with this sequel. The story retroactively makes the first game an even stronger title, because the story of the two of them is one of the strongest narratives in gaming history. An absolute masterpiece.

It somewhat reminds me of Ran by Kurosawa. ¿Is it a depressing and sad film were people die left and right in random ways? Sure, but it is still a masterpiece at representing desperation and grief. This game makes an objective of making you feel bad and in that objective it is very succesful. A story can be good, with good characters and not enjoyable given its tone. I think the director took a risk and told a devisive story and for me it worked. People were expecting a game similar to the original and this is not it. It is still great though and it will keep you thinking about the consequences of your actions. In terms of feel the closer I can think of is spec ops the line, it has an oppresive atmosfere. This is a great game. But I can somewhat see the problem people have with it, aside from the childish trolling reviews.

    The mental transition from:

    A) hating a major character (and not wanting to be manipulated by the game)

    to

    B) accepting that you understand (not like) the character's motivation while seeing that (all) the characters – being blinded by hatred – just can’t act otherwise. And therefore the game doesn't give you the option to change their actions.

... that’s a highly risky way to tell a story. Especially with such beloved characters. But it's also a real sign of creative integrity and of a bold vision.

If the player can’t take this step of acceptance (a major theme of the game itself), the game fails. It will take you out of the immersion–which is so important to appreciate the game. That's why the story leak was a huge problem. The game needs context and the player needs to let the plot – and his own anger – sink in. It's a brilliant mechanism that mirrors the events of the game on a meta-level.

The game knows that the player is in a moral dilemma. And – if you let the masterful crafted world and characters sink in – it takes you on a cathartic trip (which doesn’t work if you are not willing to accept the story).

I applaud Naughty Dog for the brave decision to go with this. I loved how they got me to the point, where I went with the emotions of the characters EVEN knowing that this meant acting against my personal choices (that derived from my knowledge of the story as an external viewer). And that I, therefore, routed for the catharsis of all the protagonists.

Risky but (therefore) great storytelling, if you are willing to accept what the game is doing.

And please pay no attention to the trolls, which not only didn't play but can also not deal with feelings. They refuse to see anything past their preconceived notion that the game is bad because the one thing they didn't want to happen, happens. If the plot hadn't been leaked and they got to experience the game instead of reading it out of a **** script and watched a few scenes without context, maybe they would feel the gut-wrenching emotions this game provides. It's through actually playing the mission parts and being in danger and listening to seemingly unimportant dialogue that you get to like the characters and, even if you don't, there's no way empathy doesn't tell you EVERY story has two sides and humans aren't 100% good or bad. Joel was always going to be a villain in someone's eyes, we were just endeared to him first. This is not about taking sides, it's about understanding that nobody is a hero in a time of desperate need and every action you take has consequences that might shape your future and your relationship with those who love you. This game takes its concept a bit too seriously to provide enjoyment at the same rate as other popular games. The reviews on this game are OUT OF CONTROL, and I really don't see what all the commotion is about so far. Are misogynists/incels upset with strong female/LBGTQ+ protagonism? Did Naughty Dog pull an SJW with the story somewhere? I haven't reached any such controversial part of the story yet, and while I don't want spoilers, I don't plan on finishing this game soon because I am at a *really* slow part of the game right now, and I don't know why, but playing this game makes me feel a bit groggy. It's not that there isn't enough action or drama in the game; I think the problem lies in its realism-aspect spacing out the action and drawing-out the world-building/atmosphere too much.

I admit I *used* to hold misogynistic views, but I don't hold them anymore; it no longer bothers me to see strong female protagonists fighting societal norms, though, I think a part of me is still depressed and has not yet completely accepted that these things are OK. If you're thinking about playing this game, it's best to be completely over these kinds of things, because it feels like this game rubs it in your face at times. This game went from playing as an ex-marine badass father to a strong, fiercely-independent lesbian woman in her 20-somethings. These characters have *completely* different socio-political demographic overlaps (outside of the group of people who are fine-with and can enjoy both.) I feel like the misogynistic/incel fans who liked the first game for the wrong reasons (perceived themes of male dominance, white supremacy, among other unscrupulous ideas) came to the sequel carrying their same socio-political expectations, and that must be one of the reasons why the user-reviews on this game are so polarized.

One thing I don't understand at all is the fact that the professional critics are giving this game an aggregate score of 96/100. That score is the territory of some of the best video games ever made, and while The Last Of Us 2 isn't terrible, I think it's definitely not one of the best games ever made. Let's be honest here: TLOU2 is a solid 85/100. Not terrible; in fact pretty good but not one of the all-time bests either.

I just finnished the game and I gotta say that this has to be one of the most impressive and well made games ever. It's a shame a lot of people instantly dismiss it over certain plot points...I truly recommend everyone who is hesitant to give this game a chance, it's such a mindblowingly great game.

Terrible story. Really shows a lack of understanding by the developers on what made the first game great. HUGE disappointment.

However, some people could not take what happened with Joel and Ellie’s sexuality... that’s why the poor reviews.
Naughty Dog should have made a survey with the fans... and avoided the nuissance.

If you buy this game, play it all the way through. Its redeming, one of the best stories ive ever experienced and has the greatest character development of any book or movie I have ever seen. This game is a masterpiece in its own right and i agrea it isnt for everyone. I strongly recommend this to any of you but be warned, leave expectations at the door. Expand

Ignore the narrowminded alt-right hate trolls steamrolling this game, which I would estimate a good 80+ percent of the hard negative reviews are. Poor little insecure twits unable to deal with the slightest challenge to how they want to see the world.
The first TLoU game is one of the few games I've played through more than once. In fact I've lost count of how many times I've played it.

The first TLoU game is one of the few games I've played through more than once. In fact I've lost count of how many times I've played it. Certainly more than any other. LToU 2 lives up to the original on all counts. At first I was a bit tentative about it. The first few hours felt like a bit of a rehash of the original in a lot of ways, but then the game shifted gears and took off. People hollering about plot holes need to use their imagination and understanding of the human condition. Nothing seems out of character. I think a lot of those comments are simply forced onto it to hide the fact that they've got some personal anti-sjw agenda. Why do they hide it.? Because they know, deep down, that they should be ashamed of themselves for being closed-minded hate mongers.

Masterpiece. Story, gameplay, sound design, attention to detail is out of this world. I have loved every second of this game. To me it is an emotional rollercoaster with a lot of epic action. It never gets repetitive and every fight feels unique. Touches on topics like what it means to be good/bad and what happens when you fight for survival of the ones you love.

Beautiful game, great attention to detail. The story was nice and touching though in the later half it dragged a bit. Same goes for gameplay which at times in the middle sagged a bit. And playing as the new character was fun too, though their fighting style was more Joel like. That made the tactics of tackling similar situations with Ellie and the new character different enough to give the game a dose of freshness. And loved the rope mechanics! Wish there were more uses for it and more puzzles with it even at the risk of making the situation more contrived. Their were times when the suspension of disbelief was questioned a bit, though that's probably a complaint only because the game has set such high standards of realism for itself. Overall a great experience. Recommended for all except for those who dislike violent imagery in games Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some complain about LGBTQ+ representation, some complain about having to play as a muscular woman. Those people are obviously ridiculous.

But then there are those who say that the message of the game is that "revenge is bad." It's, uh, way more complex than that. You don't just play as Abby to show that everyone is the hero of their own story, and that Ellie or Joel could be seen as the villain in someone else's story. You also play as Abby to see what it looks like when someone believes their violence is more justified than someone else's. Abby tells her dad that if she were the immune one, she'd want her dad to perform the operation anyway. That's noble of her, but it's not noble to kill someone in their sleep without their knowledge. She and her dad thought that act of violence was justified (it wasn't).

And so Joel thinks that killing the Fireflies and the doctor was justified (it wasn't). Abby thinks that killing Joel is justified (it wasn't). Ellie thinks that killing Abby is justified (it isn't). Abby thinks that killing Dina would be justified, because Ellie killed Mel (it isn't).

Elsewhere, Lev thinks that shaving his head is justified (it is). The Scars think that killing Lev is justified (it isn't). And so Lev stops Abby from killing Ellie. And Ellie stops herself from killing Abby. The cycle only stops when someone decides to stop.

If it didn't occur to you during the 1st game, while carrying out Joel's act of killing dozens of people, including doctors, to save one person - even if it means that you're damning everyone in the world to continue living in a zombie apocalypse, and lying to and gaslighting the person you claim to love - that this might be morally questionable, something's wrong with you.

The game never wants you to shift your loyalty to Abby and suddenly hate Ellie. The game wants to expand on the idea it left you with when Joel killed all those people - that you should question your own morality. The game makes you play as Abby while she hunts for Joel and while she attacks Ellie so that it feels BAD when you're attacking a half-dead Abby that's been roasting on a stick in the sun for a few days. Because that should feel bad! It may just be a video game, but you can still feel empathy for characters who have made mistakes. You don't have to like Abby, but you don't need to kill her.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
