The story is good but I think the narrative fails because unlike in previous Naughty Dog games the new characters aren't iconic ones. They are boring, uncharismatic, flat and forgettable, and are introduced poorly, doing something that is going to make you hate them and just after that it tries to humanize them in a flashback/plot twist that you think it's going to take an hour or less but it takes like 10 hours. So you don't take too much attention to them and don't care about them, because you want to know what happens after the cliffhanger that happens just before this long flashback. I mean, this part isn't bad but it may have been better if way shorter or shown most of it in another place of the game, altering the current order of the game. And something that isn't good or bad, but just a personal opinion: I don't understand why they took such an effort to make ugly all an unattractive the new female characters specially when compared to their actresses.
Other than, every other thing of the game is really awesome. Really awesome in terms of visuals, gameplay, animation, cinematics, IA, action, stealth, etc.

The combat and general gameplay is great as well, the superb stealth sections stand out in particular. I do recommend playing the game on a higher difficulty, to really hammer home the survival horror aspects of the game. All in all, the game is just great, and people like different things, who would've thought. However almost every bad review I've seen and read for this game, boils down to "I don't like girls, lesbians and Ellie isn't a straight white male, so I can't relate to her". I hate to break it to you, but you're not really similar to Doomguy or Dante either. The game's story is beautifully crafted, and feeds off the momentum of the first game. The Last of Us 2 should, and will be remembered as one the defining games of it's generation. Expand

Technically, the game is very refined. The environment, vegetation, level of detail - everything impresses. The story varies - a very individual matter. You can't deny that the game arouses extreme emotions. The climate is dense, the game is long enough. Finding finds satisfying. Definitely in my top 5 games on PS4.

This game will have you rooting for the good guy, then the bad guy, then the good guy again until you realize that is the moral of the story. It's an absolute masterpiece at storytelling and incredibly gripping.

To all the haters and review bombers I leave this message... if you thought that a certain death or scene was too dark and it upset you then you've missed the point entirely. It's a darker game. It's meant to reflect on these actions.
The game is meant to reflect on war. How two sides can be both right and wrong at the same time. How revenge can twist people into the very people they hate. The best part? It keeps going... far beyond what you expect from a moral standpoint. It's good writing and doesn't deserve the tarnish so heavily. What did you expect from the game? Just look at the box art compared to the first and you'll know what to expect. One displays a destroyed world, characters looking back, danger, and loss of innocence. The other shows suffering, anger, and blood in a dark room.

Graphics 10 - Nothing bad to say here, the game is an absolute crazy graphic showcase, it has stunning lighting and particle effects, but the things that stand out the most are the crazy attention to detail on every aspect of the game, like the almost disgusting representation of violence or the the ridiculous amount of details in character models and the best animation system i have ever seen, hands down.

Sound 9.5: Every detail on ambient sound, voice acting and VFX are damn near perfect, it always makes you feel like it's supposed to, is truly immersive. Music is great overall, but some of the songs are lacking a little bit of strength and personality, that's not to say that the sound package is not impressive... in fact, i think this is one of the best sound designs of the year without a doubt.

Gameplay 8.5: All the systems works wonderfully, melee combat is very brutal and engaging, the interactions with the environment while fighting are breath taking. The shooting system feels great overall and the fact that bullets are so rare makes it it feel like a luxury to shoot one. Stealth is very satisfactory because level design makes every combat feel like a sandbox where you can get creative. The only problem for me is that sometimes, the repetitiveness of the game loop can be a little too pronounced, i wish there were more set pieces or moments where gameplay changes a little bit... in a 12 hour adventure (like the first game) this is not a problem, but in a 24 hour one, it can get a little too repetitive at times.

Story 8.0: I can see why a lot of people don't like the story, a lot of parts in the game are hard to watch and play... but i just can't stop thinking this: At last! we have a good true tragedy video game! this is a step forward to the industry, i'm very happy to see video game studios trying to expand narrative to new horizons.
With that said, the execution has it's flaws, the structure of the story can get a little confusing and negatively affect the pacing at times, and there are one or two things that failed to be completely believable to me because some characters are, well... a little out of character.

This game is fantastic in every sense, i respect so much the approximation of the story and the message, it was risky but for me it paid off entirely.

It takes LoU1's best qualities and ramps them up 10-fold. The emotional impact is heavier and the message from a complete playthrough is one the world desperately needs to hear right now.

I don't want to judge the plot because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The production level is excellent and it is technologically a masterpiece.
However, I can only give it an 8 because Naughty Dog won't walk out of their comfort zones. Just like Uncharted 3 and 4 which are expansion packs of Uncharted 2. The last of us 2 plays exactly like the first one.

I cannot believe how my 2013 PS4 manages to deliver such a technical masterpiece.

The game felt quite long, which at the first sight is a positive trait, but sometimes it got too long (won’t elaborate to avoid spoilers).

The gameplay in itself is not revolutionary in my opinion. It is very enjoyable thanks to perfect animations, but is doesn’t bring anything very now, nor much variation. Sometimes, TLOU2 pumps too hard in the reservoir of what it has to propose. How many times, as Ellie or Abby, have I had to kill a whole army on my own? Another annoying thing is based on the ammo. Let me explain. When you play the game, you will quickly notice that ammo is scarce, but you will also notice that every time you start finding a lot of ammo consistently, it means that a long combat against either zombies or humans will follow, and that’s bad because it makes the game super predictable.

Don’t get me wrong though, the game still emotionally shocks by moments, it is rough, unforgiving, and shows how humans may make imperfect (and sometimes frustrating) choices. Horror, deception, irrationality and loneliness are some of the many feelings this game manages to transmit to the player. You will probably feel for the characters, bond to them despite their defaults, which is a thing not many games manage to excel at.

I also want to talk a bit about the story itself. I think that, such as it is the case with the The Walking Dead TV series, this game got its whole focus on post-pandemic clan wars and revenge, forgetting the very basis of trying to give the player/viewer information on the disease itself. Why? What? When? How? How’s it elsewhere in the world? Those are some of the things that lacked in this game. A second thing is that the end of the game leaves us too much in the dark. Too many questions are left unanswered, and I think that especially giving the fact that the game really pushes in length in order to make us bond with a specific character, it should have shown us how things finish with way more footage (cutscenes at least). To finish on the story, I’d say the following: after I finished TLOU1 for the first time, I was very emotionally hit, I almost couldn’t play any other game for one week because of how deep the game made me voyage. With TLOU2, I don’t have that strong feeling, I liked it, but it didn’t revolutionize my emotions.

I thus think TLOU2 is a very good game, but it is not perfect, nor does it bring whole new previously unseen gameplay mechanics. That said, it is super enjoyable (except for the too long part), and I cannot wait to play TLOU3. Thank you Naughty Dog.

It's a game that takes many bold risks, which I find hard not to admire. Naughty Dog could have easily phoned in a sequel to try and please everyone, yet its decision to take the narrative in an unpredictable direction almost immediately and fully commit to it without compromising is very respectable.

However, the narrative is not without its flaws. My biggest issue with it is the pacing. With a shift in perspective around halfway through, the narrative momentum completely crashes and the game begins to feel very long. By the time the end does come, it feels like it could have been cut short by at least 4 or 5 hours.

I can't find many criticisms for the gameplay, as I feel it improved upon the first game in every way. While the gameplay is pretty much the same, it is more refined and polished. The acting is also fantastic across the board, with Laura Bailey standing out to me as the highlight. It's not easy to take such a controversial role on, but she knocked it out the park.

Overall, this is not as good as the first game - which was more focussed and its message more relatable - but I have to respect this sequel for its sheer audacity for not following what was expected of it. The creators had a story to tell, and they told it. That takes balls.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually get many of the gripes people have with this game. The waaay in your face social justice bonanza with most named characters being either ethnic minorities or gay (the numerous letters you find in the game included)? Absolutely, very on the nose. Neil Druckmann wants to signal his virtue, and he wants to signal it *hard*, and yes, it detracts from the quality of the game which certainly does not need all this to call attention to itself. The soap opera bits aren't to many people's liking either, and I get where they're coming from. And most prominently, people seem to hate one of their favorite video game characters dying quite unceremoniously – not at the end of the game, but in its prologue.

I hated to see him go, too. We were supposed to, obviously. But we were also supposed to get past that and realize why things happened the way they happened, and that this wouldn't have worked with, say, Tommy or some other character we weren't as invested in. This isn't like offing John Connor within the first two minutes of Terminator - Dark Fate, thereby negating all that's been achieved in T2. This is more like offing the main character Ned Stark of Game of Thrones in the first season – because he *needs* to die for the story to be told.

TLOU2's story is very, very much in the same vein as the first game. Customers celebrated the daring move of killing off Sarah at the end of TLOU's prologue, the abruptness, the brutality, the senselessness. We were supposed to get our empathy working and believing that Sarah was most precious to Joel, since she just had a few minutes to grow on us. This time someone dies horribly, just like Sarah did before, but he's precious to *us*. We've spent countless hours with him, of course we don't wanna see him get beaten to death. But even in the first game he wasn't the pivotal character, even though for the majority of it we were supposed to think he was.

Joel's death sends Ellie down a dark path peppered with experiences she'll never recover from. The way the game shows her descent into self-medicating her PTSD by become more and more of a monster and less and less of a person is masterfully done. Everytime when she reaches a pivotal point and has the opprtunity to stop and reflect and make a good decision, she decides to put up the blinders and continue on her path which thereby gets harder and harder to leave. The more she learns, the more she has to ignore those informations and concentrate on embracing her hate until it consumes almost all of her. What that does to that spunky little girl we got to know seven years ago is daring and expertly written, directed and acted out. We feel just a bit like her: We too want vengeance, but where most of us would eventually stop, she presses on and thereby forces us players to press on. At the end, we play a shadow of the person Ellie used to be. Gradually we lose our connection to the main protagonist, until we do *not* want what she wants anymore, and yet we have to enable her to achieve goals that aren't ours anymore, just by playing her.

When the point of view changed and I found myself playing Abby not just in a flashback, when I realized that I would obviously have to play her for as long as I had played Ellie before, I was furious. Sure, I didn't thirst for her blood as much as in the beginning, but I didn't want to start the game over and play her. But within an hour or two I found myself identifying with her as much as I had with Ellie – and further down the road so much more. The way the game achieves this is manipulative, yes, but every game that wants to elicit an emotional response from the player has to manipulate them, and this game knows how to pull out all the stops. Maybe identifying with Ellie and her motivation we're all very familiar with – avenging a loved one is the plot of countless movies and games, after all – made many players see the code instead of the Matrix, maybe that's what made them notice all the tricks the game used to make the player identify with Abby, and feeling manipulated, they took on a repudiating stance towards her? But if you keep an open mind and accept that the game presents you with an "antagonist" who's morally much more wholesome and human than the protagonist you enjoyed playing before, you get Ellie's "what if" mirror image. Abby makes Ellie's downward spiral so much more heartbreaking because what Ellie keeps throwing away, bit by bit, until there's almost nothing left, is what Abby has kept: the last of us. Humanity.

Ok Neil Druckman, you've buyed me with just the one music store scene where Ellie plays "Take one me". That's the most beautiful scene in gaming history. The face expressions, the voices, the melody. All that worked just perfect in that moment. I'll give 10/10 just for that one scene.

The story was very emotional and impactful. Most of it is tragic, and that should be a warning to anyone who wants to play. This is very dark and happy moments are rare. My only problem I had was the disjointed order. I think they could have presented the plot in a more meaningful and linear way, but that isn't what you'll get. It's fine the way it is, but it could have been better. The entire plot is still quite an experience and one of the best I've gone through since God of War.

A lot of the accessibility options in this game are amazing. I used some of them and I'm sure many people saw benefit from what you can do.

Overall I think this game reached the legacy of the first game at the very least. A lot of people might dislike the events of the story, but to give the game a zero because it made you mad is childish. This game is above any average Ubisoft or Activision game. It is quite literally one of the best games of this generation.

Let no one tell you otherwise. It is the intention of the game to make you feel deeply uncomfortable and unsettled in changing perspectives. Even it’s seemingly unending nature is by emotional design. This games dives deep and takes you on a journey that is so important in this day and age - the journey of ambiguous choices. There’s no clear good guy. No clear bad guy. Just like in real life this games acts like a mirror...and it pisses people off. But the journey, the story, the cinematic experience are the best videogames has to offer to date. If there were an Oscar for games, this one would bring home every category. It’s that good. Period.

    I give this game a 9/10.

Reasons why. 1) 8.5/10 Story. the game story had played me like a emotional guitar. Loved every moment of it. Ending felt kinda anti climactic little bit, just like original game, were it just ends and you want more. You will feel like its world of Game of Thrones. Bring box of tissues. Oh and a bucket to clean up the blood. 2) 10/10 Enviorment and Atmosphere.

I love how almost every door is openable, i love how in certain sections of the game its explorable, also i love how you can see destintion out in the distance and you slowly making your way towards it thru the ruined city. That is awesome. Very very beautifuelly build world and enviorment, they developers completly made great job for the detail of the envoiroment, and made it alot of fun looking for goodies and checking every cornor for upgrades .

    3) gameplay. 9.5/10 its really enjoyable to find your own path, and a way you want to tackle enemies. Stealth thru, use traps, silently kill them with pistol and bow or sneak up murder, throw bottle to attract zombies to attack other humans or outright gun blazing. The combat is alot of fun AI is smarter than in most games like this. They hear you, smell you, try to go around you, slowly advance on you from cover to cover. Try to out number you. Do you flee, fight, or sneak thru. Either way what ever you choose it will leave you wanting more.

Overall i think length of game was good, interesting to see different parts of the city, which was beautifuelly made. The story was also done in awesome interesting way and i see what deveoplers had went for and i understand it as a whole. I say give it a shot the game is well made.

Expand

There were characters that I really liked even though they were "enemies". The story did not develop like I would have wanted it to, but that made it even more interesting. It's not a "nice" story with a happy end on a white horse.

The graphics is just gorgeous and very detailed. You find a lot details just for a single scene, or something you just stumple upon details that most players will miss. It makes the world believable. There are some flaws with enemy encounters, though, like some encounters where you think no way a real human would survive this, but hey, it's a game. The levels are very linear, sometimes very noticeable, sometime not, most of the time it's just fine and I didn't mind much. Overall the sneaking/killing works very well and can be quite nerve wrecking (in a good sense).

I do understand it's a polarizing game, for various reasons. You might not like some characters or the way the story develops, but it is in my opinion a good/well-told story (even though it's a cliche revenge story). Most main and secondary characters are neither black or white, they have likeable traits and dislikable flaws. It made me care for characters, hate others, think about them and their situations, I liked a lot of things in the story (and side stories) and there's few for me to complain about. The game really made me forget my surrounding and sucked me in at times, which is all I want of a game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game in about 30 hours and overall I enjoyed it, but I can also understand the criticism the game is receiving from a large group of gamers, and even agree with some points. So here it goes:

    - Is this game better than the first one? No, it is not, this game lacks some key elements of the first one, like the journey across multiple cities or the "us against the world" feeling so present in TLOU.

    - Is this the game a masterpiece? Graphically speaking, yes it is, it looks amazing. The performance of the voice actor and actresses is top notch and very convincing, really a 10 out of 10. But it's not perfect enough to be called a masterpiece. There's too much repetition combat wise, for example.

    - Is the story good? That's a tough one, yes and no, but the only way I found to answer that is by saying: its a good story for this game alone, but as a story worthy of a sequel to the first game? No. Like I said before, it's not the same feeling as it lacks key elements of the first game.

    - Is there wokeness in the game? Yes, and I most definitely don't like politics and social activism in games, because it tends to ruin them, but it's not a big issue in TLOU2. It didn't bother me in this case.

    - Was Joel's death really necessary to the sequel? Not in my opinion, there was other possibilities, it did work for the story, but still didn't like this creative choice from Naughty Dog. This was very disappointing.

Well, I do think people should play this game, but I would wait for some PSN sale in the future.

Maybe that Cyberpunk 2077 or a surprise title can replace it. But I don't expect this to happen.
This game made me feel every emotion. Love, hate, sadness, FEAR, dread, acceptance, etc.
I do not understand the amount of hate this game gets, because it's simply put...an amazing continuation of the original in every aspect. Story, world building, settings and (especially) gameplay.
I seriously don't know why this game gets so much hate...
And yeah, I'm a gamer. Just this year alone I've played 3-4 of my all time favorite games. Persona 5 Royel, Final Fantasy 7 (Remake) and The Last of Us 2. I played the first one at release, waited 7 years on it. And it was worth it.

This is a bold game, and requires the player to stop and think. Many times. The story they chose to tell was destined to upset and dissapoint, but that is part of why I love this game, it forces you to realize that there is more to everything than what you first realize. A simple lesson but one that still is important. Life is not fair, in real life, people you love and treasure can be taken from you in the blink of an eye. Nothing is for granted. Real life can be cruel and unfair, just like it is in TLOU2. I like to think naughty dog expected the players to make the same Journey as Ellie, and cope with their grief as she did. But alot of people just wanted to kill Abby. If that was a choice, the game would have had less meaning and less food for thought, you could say the same for the ending we got but thats how views are different. An eye for an eye would leave the world blind. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was the feeling I've got after watching red wedding in game of thrones (back when the show was actually good). It was a game that had a good emotional story that I hated to play but loved to watch.

I think the Abby part of the story was not there so that we can excuse the murder of Joel or justify her actions either. It was there so that we can understand the nuance and the parallel between Elie's quest of revenge vs Abby's.

I think Abby's part was there so that we can better understand why Ellie (in the end) had to forgive Abby and let her go when she had the power over her. I understand the criticism that people have when playing as Abby but I still think it was a good decision in the context of the story. I wanted Abby to die the whole game until the end. Not because (as I previously said) she was no longer guilty of the torture and death of Joel but because I needed Ellie to forgive her.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Incredible, beautiful, emotionally exhausting, epic game. Do not play it if you have not played the first, and if it's been more than a year since you played the first, I suggest playing it again prior to this one.
When I say 'epic', I'm talking Godfather 1 and 2, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and more.
I want to play it again but my heart is wrung out.
    Absolutely loved it

My feelings for the game changed several times during the passage. But somewhere in the middle of the walkthrough, I realized that what Drackmann did was brilliant. He is a genius. And the best author in the industry. I enjoyed the game. Don't be children crying for a dead hero. The author has the right to his point of view.

This game is a masterpiece. PERIOD. Hands down the best story experience I have ever had playing a video game. It's is not an easy experience, and it will break your heart. This is a beautiful and wholly realized vision. The characters are practically real people, as they are so well developed. The story makes sense, and will leave you floored but still retains a point to it all. This gameThis game is a masterpiece. PERIOD. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
