Skyrim VR has Pixelation and FOV like am back in the PS1 era. The PS/VR technology is just quite not there yet and this being an old game doesn't help. Close up the dated NPC are not detailed enough so everything looks and feels gamerfied. I feel more like am in a studio set than a live open world. RE7 tricked my brain enough so I felt I was in a creepy old house. Skyrim looks and feels all so very fake and so blurred out.

After trying several different VR games the motion sickness has finally gone. Still with all that plastic and rubber on the head? Head overheat happens pretty quicky. Yeah even when using a massive floor fan to try and counter it. Maybe I need to use PS/VR in the winter or something?

Not only can you decimate anything in your path, but it also abolishes the need for the dual flurry skill, as one handed and two handed are controlled by hand speed, not anything in game. I beat this as my second Skyrim run, and finished at level ten, mainly from the way one handed levels up and heavy armor. Oh, and did I mention one handed levels up by damage AND attack speed? Absolutely broken. It is pretty fun to do so though, and everything else adapted very well, so take me 9/10 and scram. Expand

This is an amazing game! You can do almost anything you want from being a good-doer to a thief. Every time you die you can better yourself for future, more powerful enemies. The only thing I have against the game is the house building mechanic, but that is not what the game is about. What are you waiting for, buy it!

This basically just being Skyrim: Special Edition, it has the same strengths and weaknesses as that game.

However... I'll just put it this way:
You know how some people just like trying to jump their way up the sides of mountains, and you can use that to reach the highest mountaintop before it's opened? I tried that, and perceiving just how high up I was and how loose the footing was was actually making my palms sweat. Adding some real depth perception to these environments is an absolute treat, whether it be the snow falling in the northern mountains, the vast machinations of the Dwemer ruins, or the cavernous glow of Blackreach.

One of the biggest improvements here is just how easy it is to aim*. Most people reviewing this game seem to have chosen to focus on archery as it feels greatly improved, as have I; The arrow literally goes directly towards the center of your vision in whatever direction you face your head towards, which is astoundingly intuitive in it's simplicity, and mixed with the perks of unlocking slow-motion and whatnot, it feels pretty badass, honestly.
*I really MUST note just how much easier it is to simply interact with specific items on shelves! Even just noticing items is easier. Do you have any clue how many times, while playing the original Skyrim, I accidentally picked up things I didn't want and then had to do menu work, dropping stuff? That's practically gone here, and it makes the game so much more fluent and enjoyable.

This isn't to say that you have to choose archery in order to fully enjoy this game, as melee combat can't help but feel more impactful as you move in and out for attacks. Sneaking is much more interesting as you can actually peer out around a corner slightly, which wouldn't have worked the same playing first person in the O.G.

Load times are equivalent to the PS4 Skyrim: Special Edition release.

In terms of graphics... I really think people should take into account that wearing a PSVR headset is akin to stretching PS4 graphics to the resolution of an entire wall. Nothing's going to look as good as it does on a regular-sized TV without an upgrade. That said, while some occasional textures seem vanilla, they're sparse enough to not detract from a thoroughly engaging experience; There's still plenty to gasp in awe at. I mean, seriously, I stared at the skill tree menu for like 5 minutes straight the first time I opened it up.

This is one of the best VR games out right now, and probably for a while, and in my opinion, the truest and most engaging way to experience Skyrim. I'm kind of jealous of anyone who gets to play this game for the first time with this version.

Edit: I'm currently experiencing the Dragonborn DLC for the first time, and I WAS NOT MENTALLY READY TO OPEN THAT BLACK BOOK. WHY AM I SUDDENLY DEALING WITH CTHULHU SPAWN IN A HELLISH ABYSS? I want my mommy...

P.S. I use the standard Dualshock controller, as I don't own a Move.
I prefer standing up when traversing (as it doesn't feel quite right to be sitting down when there's a giant dragon screaming in my face), and sitting down when I handle town-based stuff.

I know I am a bit late to this party, but Skyrim is one of my favorite games of all time. And even as an adult who can recognize all the blatant flaws in the game design, RPG Systems, quests and story etc. At the end of the day it is a great videogame that I used to enjoy playing over and over again.

But over time, my nostalgia blew away to the wind. My cynicism kicked in and I can't play the game now without noting the useless skill trees, the simplistic writing, the stilted character designs and facial animations. Even the quest design, which in an RPG is crucial to the experience, is fundamentally flawed from the ground up. The once lovingly nostalgic "Hey, you, you're finally awake..." line at the beginning, was now a repetitive moniker, symbolizing a played out formula Bethesda had been using for decades.

Skyrim had lost it's magic for me. It's wonder. As you can see, I am not exactly in love with this game anymore.

A couple weeks ago I picked up a PSVR, and a few games, Batman Arkham VR, Star wars Squadrons, Iron Man VR, and Resident Evil 7.

I don't get motion Sickness. Ever. Batman didn't make me sick, (mostly because your just standing around) Star wars Squadrons didn't give me Motion sickness, and keep in mind that squadrons, is very intense, and insanely fast moving game. Iron Man VR was the same, and Resident Evil? Well, let's just say that was an utter nightmare, but in a good way.

Skyrim however was a nightmare in a different way.

At the beginning you are asked to choose your look settings, movement settings and other things. I chose to just move along with a walking pace, no teleporting.

And as soon as I woke up on that carriage, glancing at the nostalgic world I had fallen in and out of love with for so long, I couldn't help but feel...glee...

A childish wonder I haven't felt in so very long. And when the leather-faced stilted dolt sitting across from me said "Hey, you, you're finally awake..." I just smiled like an idiot.

After making a character, being saved by a dragon and running into the tower, the overwhelming sense of nostalgia came over me so quickly. It was magic again, it was fun. The combat sucked but it was still Skyrim.

Then while going through the dungeons of Helgen, around the part where you get the potions from that little room, I felt my head spinning, the ground moving from underneath my feet, my stomach doing backflips. I just wanted to rip off the headset and lay down. But I'm not a quitter, it wouldn't be fair for me to judge this kind of game based on it's gameplay without actually playing it for two hours.

So I switched it to the teleportation mode and that helped a bit, I also opted to sit down for the rest of my playthrough, but it didn't help much, by the time I fought the giant spiders, I had been feeling miserable.

But then I left the cave and witnessed the blinding light, the mountain housing Bleak Falls Barrow, the running river, the insects polluting some bushes nearby, the gorgeous soundtrack and the sound of the wind blowing right by me, and of course that magnificent dragon that soars over me, roaring it's distinct shouts. This is what Skyrim VR gets right, the world truly is, alive.

But at the end of that playthrough I couldn't even get to Riverwood, the first town in the game you happen upon.

The next week I tried again. And still got sick, I do not know what in the hell causes me to get sick during this game and not a space dogfighting simulation like Squadrons. I think it has to do with the framerate. But anyways, moving on to Whiterun, something horrible happened, the nostalgia went away, the motion sickness went away and was instead replaced by immeasurable Disappointment.

I was disappointed in Skyrim VR. Not just because of the frame rate. But because at the end of the day, it is still Skyrim. Skyrim, this beautiful game with absolutely terrible graphics.

Skyrim, one of the most immersive games ever made, but is still buggy and glitchy to all hell.

Skyrim a world full of a thousand characters that are as deep as a puddle.

Skyrim this confusing, ugly, beautiful, unique mess of a game, is not better in VR.

Some people believe VR is the definitive way to play this game. It is not, it was made as a regular game, and it barely does that right. Please don't get it, please don't try and replay it again. Just live in it, because the definitive way to play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is through nostalgia.

And PSVR does not have a rose tinted glasses setting.

It's hard not to give this a 10/10 solely because it's VR. I can't tell you how many times I would just stop, look around, and think to myself, "Holy sh*t, I'm literally standing in Whiterun right now," which is a very weird and awesome feeling. VR is a whole new level of gaming and it's only going to get better.

    Narrative: 8/10
Skyrim tells an engaging story that keeps you interested throughout. It may lose traction a little bit here and there but it mostly keeps a steady pace. There are a couple more intriguing story lines in the DLCs if you get them complete version.

    Protagonist: 10/10
Being able to fully customize your characters appearance and apparel automatically renders a 10/10 IMO. Skyrim executes this perfectly. However, in VR you cannot see your own character so it's kind of pointless. Regardless, still awesome.

    Characters/Interactions: 10/10
Skyrim really immerses you into the game with things like being able to get married, adopt children, own pets, build your home. All of these things create such a unique experience in VR that it's hard to put the headset down sometimes. Not to mention some awesome supporting characters you meet along the way, both friend and foe.

    Gameplay: 10/10
Man, there's something about using the Move controller to cast a spell from your "hand" and blowing an enemy to pieces. Or wielding a sword and slicing your way through a wave of bandits. Or drawing back the bow behind your head and sniping a giant across a field. All of it is just amazing. It's hard to believe that this is where we're at with technology, but I couldn't be happier with it!

What I mean is I felt more in the moment and took everything in a lot more. I did the Golden Claw quest and it was a lot of fun. I rescued a man that was stuck in a spider's web. I killed the giant spider first. And after the man tried to run away with the Golden Claw I killed him and took it back. I then killed this Overlord and took his sword as my own. Looking at the map is cool in VR and same for the skill tree. My only complaint is that you can't kill everyone in the game. It hurts the overall immersion. Any review that complained about controls is wrong, you can play exactly the same way as regular skyrim with a controller. As others mentioned, you feel like you are really in Skyrim. While graphics are downgraded, I believe the added level of immersion is a solid tradeoff. I chose the motion control, normal locomotion and after one hour you do not want to go back to a DS4 anymore. Bethesda has found an amazing control scheme using the PS move. Shooting arrows with a bow feels like shooting with a real bow in real life, it is extremely well implemented after a little bit getting used to. Similar for slashing and stabbing with a sword. It is as if you were doing it in real life. Blocking incoming arrows with a shield is again amazing.
The controls and buttons schemes are extremely well mapped on the 2 moves and it is great. Using fire and other magical cast is something you have to experience in VR.
I read somewhere that the graphics are still better on a PS4 Pro, but as I mentioned before, I still have to encounter a major bug on a PS4 og.
I haven't experienced any sickness or nausea after few hours of gaming uninterrupted. There are quite generous options in the settings to accommodate the VR experience to your liking. Especially the FOV and the snap turning intensity etc.

Update 1: After almost 20 hrs of playing, I definitely confirm my score of 10. Using the bow and arrows is terrific especially after you invest some skill point in it. The dungeons are now scary, very scary. I had several jump scares that left me trembling. Your first encounter with a Draugr will leave some marks lol. Holding a torch while roaming dungeons is like in real life. Fabulous. I have never experienced something like that after more than 35 years of gaming. Ignore the people that are complaining about the graphics. It’s true that the resolution is low, but the graphics are well detailed and when you’re inside the World of Skyrim it’s not an annoyance at all. You’ll get used to it rapidly. Bethesda has made a big service to VR by releasing Skyrim for it. It has demonstrated that huge games can be adapted to the technology and are as much as if not more enjoyable than in 2D. I hope other big developers will follow suite and jump in the train (I’m looking at you Witcher 3. Imagine casting magic by drawing rectangles with your PS Move). Bethesda has proven as well that VR is not a gimmick but a real revolution in how we play video games. I’m hopeful for the future.

Update 2 (One year later): I purchased a ps4 Pro and I'm playing on it at the moment. The experience is noticeably smoother in terms of graphics and frame rate. I advise you to play Skyrim VR on a Pro. I clocked 108 hours up till now and still I'm not bored. I originally never played the expansion and they offer me a lot of additional content and a new island. The developers have patched the games several times and the latest patch in my opinion brought the most improvement to the game. I really wish Bethesda brought Fallout to VR and make good use of the Aim controller.

To summarize my long review of the game. This is the game I bought my PSVR for a few months back, and I made the right choice. If you loved Skyrim and you want to experience it in VR with a new character, do not miss this opportunity and get the game or the Skyrim VR bundle. If this sells a lot, it will push other big developers to release big games in VR and will keep the technology alive.

Perhaps for people of my generation, who were the first to experience video games outside of research laboratories, this game is the realization of decades of dreaming and wondering - what would it be like to have a more embodied experience fighting a dragon, delving into a subterranean lair, riding a horse through a snowstorm down a treacherous mountain path while being chased by a monster.

Using weapons is pretty fun. Bow and arrow, once you get it down, is really satisfying and you end up feeling as though you're actually shooting one. The best weapons so far though are the werewolf pimp slap claws. It's extremely fun running around and a werewolf and pimp slapping everyone to death. Casting is also pretty fun, but I still prefer weapon and the werewolf pimp slap.

The only real drawback to the game for me are the menus. They were a bit clumsy, even when you get accustomed to the moves. That said, I'm not sure what the best way to implement them to be more fluid would have been. There are a lot of menu and sub menu items in the game. Other games in PSVR seem to not have nearly as many issues, though many don't have the sheer amount of menu items. It would have maybe helped in things like enchanting or alchemy to be able to select to make something more than once instead of having to select all the items again and again.

Overall it is deeply immersive and by far one of the longest and largest titles on PSVR. If you have PSVR it is a must own to me.

It's a game that lets you literally step into the world of Skyrim. I can't imagine a better selling point. While the Moves offer more immersion, playing with the DS4 gives you the controls you're used to while also allowing the PSVR to place you in the world. Astounding.

Easily one of the best games on the VR platform. Looks blurry at first (indoors - especially the dungeoans - it is much better), soon to be forgotten when you dive in into this almost endless adventure.

The controls with two moves are awesome and work really well - compensating the lack of proper sticks. This is the way Skyrim is meant to be played. Be in this fascinating world and

Archery and magic works best, but also melee etc feels great.

After clocking in about 30 hours of gameplay, I can safely conclude that Skyrim VR is the best virtual-reality experience I have had thus far. I do have a few criticisms, but they pale in comparison to the massive achievement Bethesda has accomplished in not only porting this relatively old game over to a VR headset, but also developing dramatically new ways to play a classic RPG.After clocking in about 30 hours of gameplay, I can safely conclude that Skyrim VR is the best virtual-reality experience I have had thus far. Positives (+):
-Very fun usage of the PS Move controllers (highly recommended for the full experience), including realistic archery mechanics, shooting spells out of your hands in multiple directions, and fun sword/shield combat.
-Sense of scale: cities, mountains, dragons, etc. tower over you and give a strong sense of immersion; the draw distance seems to be preserved well enough to also give you sweeping views
-Immersive details: dust settling indoors, butterflys, moths, seeds falling from trees, bugs crawling on the ground are some of the many details I simply never noticed while playing for hundreds of hours on the consoles
-Great range of options: I appreciated how many settings there were for those who experience nausea, and also including both Move and Ds4 support for different playstyles
-Smooth 60fps, relatively short load times
-An already great game with all DLC; if you enjoy it, Skyrim VR is the reason to get a PSVR as you can play this for years and not run out of quests to complete or locations to explore.

    Negatives (-):
-Low resolution: this is mostly a hardware limitation, and I was also playing on an OG PS4, but the graphics still take a major hit; those who prefer maximized graphics and visual fidelity may be disappointed if you cannot look past this.
-Sound: the sound has a poor 3D effect. Not bad, but just nothing impressive; I really think Bethesda could have spent more time on this.
-Combat, while fun, can get wonky: this is mostly in regards to melee weapons; the hit detection seems off and can break the immersion at times.
-Appearance of Move controllers in-game: when you have your weapons sheathed, the move controllers appear on screen instead of your hands. While I understand we need to see the buttons, it can be immersion-breaking.

Overall: phenomenal VR adaptation of an already-great game, hampered only by a few minor criticisms. If you love RPGs and are on the fence about buying a PSVR, I highly recommend picking one up along with Skryim VR.

Expand

While it's not the best VR game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR is the most massive RPG on PSVR, and it's just as addictive as it's always been. Regardless of whether you play the main quests, chase down all of the side content, go hunting, go dungeoneering, be a smith and forge your own weapons, or go wherever you want to go, Skyrim works well enough, and that should be good enough for most players.

VR really lets you experience Skyrim on a whole different level of immersion. Even despite PS VR’s low resolution it’s really easy to forget about the real world. The problem for me was that although I’m usually resistant to VR-induced nausea, after ca. 40-60 minutes with Skyrim VR I was starting to feel sick. [01/2018, p.50]

It's not perfect but there's no other PS VR game with this level of depth and detail. Even if you think you've seen it all before, you've definitely never see it like this. [Jan 2018, p.96]
