One of the best mmo on the market. Period. And best mmo on the console. Great mix between classic Elder Scrolls and online. Always dreamed about TES with friends.

The game purposefully tries to look somewhat archaic since it's supposed to be timed a thousand years before Skyrim. It helps keep the framerate up especailly for an mmo. The game actually runs quite smooth considering. Ultimately it's worth more than the $60 price tag if you're looking for something to play for a while. This couldn't have hit at a better time and it's basically the best thing this summer, give it a try. Expand

Its fun to interact with other player and sometimes they can help you defeat certain enemies which is very helpful . Smithing is so fun in this game that I spent 3 hours smithing the game makes things which were minor in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim come alive it makes players want to do them and enjoy doing them. I suggest if you are a fan of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim you should buy it but don't expect the same game expect a new experience which incorporates the beauty of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the new great and wonderful mechanics in elder scrolls online this game will be worth you'r time Expand

After the first day of login queues, it's fun to get in and wander around doing quests with other people in ESO. Everyone marking this game a 0 that also states they could never play isn't reviewing the game, they're just trolling, so this is to offset that. The queues are entirely gone now and anyone that gave this a 0 because they "Couldn't play!" should really reconsider.

Exceeded my expectations hugely. The world is gorgeous and immense. The combat is better than skyrim (but perhaps not as cohesive as WoW). The skills are beautifully designed in a Guild Wars style, even to the point of switching between 2 sets based on your weapons. This is really the first game, ever in my opinion, that really nails the feeling of exploration. Just walk in any direction and enjoy the experience, there will be plenty to do (and to kill). An amazing accomplishment from the developers. If you're a long time gamer like me (25 years +) there will be plenty here to entertain - the game has depth and is clearly a labour of love. The size of the PVP maps is totally incredible. Bigger than anything else. I expected a lukewarm cheeseburger and got the gourmet degustation. Well done Bethesda Expand

So I just put a good solid 12 hours of gameplay on my ps4 and I do not like this game. I am a huge fan of Skyrim and Dragon age Origins and the new Elders Scroll tries to be both and in my opinion it has failed.

The graphics are great, no argument there. For as far as I got, the story is good but where it loses me is the online game play, utter chaos and confusion. The pros about wandering around with strangers is that they can be of benefit if you happen to need assistance in a battle and someone else is wandering around at that same moment you are fighting and they join in.
Where it gets odd is when out of no where they (online players) appear bouncing around and basically acting the fool therefore taking away the serious nature of the gaming experience. It is also not just once or twice but always, non stop, doesn't end. I find it very cheesy and distracting.

Where this game really annoys and angers me is the detailed, if not all out complication of my inventory. ie: weapons, clothing, food, potions ect. Really, could you make it just a little more confusing and complicated!? How about weapon assignment and button selection,..really! It does not make any sense whatsoever!

Another annoyance was the battle melees. So I'm crouched down attempting a sneak attack with the bow and after a shot or two I want to switch to my shield and sword. Well I cant, it says I cannot switch weapons in battle. So now I'm running backwards trying to defend close range with a long range weapon. Then there are the enemies that appear out of thin air when you are not properly equipped for the battle and when you go into your inventory to choose, the enemy can still attack and do damage, serious damage. It does not go into a pause attack mode or give you a fair chance to re-equip.

The money situation is also a head scratcher. In battle your equipment also takes damage making it less effective and it costs to have it repaired but the cost is way to excessive for what you get out of it. I could not find a way to repair myself and therefore all the money I collected was used to repair my equipment or hope to always replace the equipment with new finds. What I found was that if I liked a certain look or garment, I was spending all my money just to repair it and I could not invest in anything new.

I have more complaints but overall I would rate this game a 6.2 as it is not in anyway, shape or form Skyrim and has only some resemblance to Dragon Age Origins. Anyone thinking they are getting Skyrim 3 do yourself a favour and save your money. The most recent Dragon Age Inquisition was good but still, nothing compares to Skyrim. For me, this game was a complete waste of my money and I can only hope the developers get their act together a produce something as clean, exciting and beautiful as Skyrim

I have package my game up and I am returning it to the store I bought it from. I wont get my money back but they will give me an in-store credit on something else that I'm sure will be better than this waste of time.

I did benefit from one aspect of multiplayer. There was a very hard boss to kill. I failed three times; the fourth time another player was going at it also, and together we took the boss down. As for talking to other players, I have a headset/mic but I haven't really done much in terms of interaction, except I think I freaked one guy out by speaking in a deep growl once. That was fun. But mainly this is just a lot like Skyrim, except areas are larger to accommodate other players, and of course it does have the significant downside of not allowing player created add-ons. But it has the plus of being expanded and revised over time by the creators. Also it is free to play, so any competition among players is ruined by the fact that you can purchase advantages, or even pay a subscription to accelerate your overall progress. This is another reason just to think of it as a single player RPG, rather than as fundamentally an MMORPG Expand

I love the crafting actually, if you're a cruncher, its cool to go and farm stuff that makes your next bow, (crunching, if i decon this then i get 2 of those to make x etc)

Questing is a chore, it is done better on other titles, sometimes distraction re:gw2 can work

Without any viable text input, you just seem to be this insane wanderer, hoping for an invite for what you might be standing next to at that moment, the game needs more interaction, this, psn names, combat and the guilds themselves are woefully sub-par.

I click on most of the 10's and they have no history, other than to rate every version of the game at max, so here i am at a 1, although it is a credible 7 in my view. I just wish Zenimax had put as much effort into placating their pc audience, as they did with their multitude of penny pinching versions on console.

Graphics are not the best, but it doesn't matter, the gameplay works perfect and the story, as far as I palyed, is great. It's not Skyrim, it's a legit Elder Scrolls game and that is good enough.

This is THE game I was waiting for since DAOC. This MMO-RPG is very immersing and very well done in all aspects. I guess that very bad criticisms come from teenagers or people who need a high level of assistance, like we can find in GW2. ESO has been designed for mature people who like to use their brain in many ways, especially to build their character skills.

The four classes are balanced while being fun to play and the pvp is great for large groups but lacks good support for small scale pvp and dueling. While the decision to exclude a trading house is radical, it actually makes buying more interesting as you check the multiple guild traders in every city looking for that last rare piece of a set that you need.

The only frustrating part for me is the veteran rank system, the lack of small scale pvp support, and some of the ways the mmo blends into the leveling.

The veteran rank system was promised to be phased out before the console launch to the champion point system, but apparently deadlines weren't meet. In the champion point system your rewarded for playing beyond the max level of 50 by getting points that make you marginally better at something like mana recovery or dodge roll cost for your choice in multiple trees. This seems fair since it makes a player that has been playing hardcore for the last year only 10-15% better then a fresh new lv 50. The points diminish exponentially so that means if you have 100 points and another play has 250 they might have 5.6% better dodge roll cost, mana recovery, resistance to fire, ect. while you have 3% better. The champion point system is great since it levels the playing feild relatively while still giving long term players a slight edge and a reason to keep playing. The points are also account bound wich means leveling another character to lv 50 will be a walk in in the park with any reasonable amount of champion points.

However with the vet rank system in place if your vr 1 aka lv 50 you have significantly lower base stats then someone that is vr 14 the "True" max level. While it sucks you can grind in a good spot for 20 hours and hit vr 14, but oh well what's a mmo without grinding? However hopefully Bethesta will finish the last stage of the vet system to champion point system transition soon.

Small scale pvp can be kind of hard to fine in eso, the best method is to get in between a keep that is being attacked and the faction that's attacking it, then trying to pick off the tail end of a zerg re spawn. Most small fights will turn into a 1 vs 3 or a 2 vs 6, but if your skilled enough you can win even while massively outnumbered.( watch syper pk on youtube for examples.) Their are good clans that support dueling but still it's disappointing to not be able to stake in an arena for 1vs1 or 3vs3 fights.

The only disappointing thing about the leveling is that while the major quest ( The ones marked on the map with a castle or temple symbol) feel very much like the elder scrolls, the map is very linear and you can't explore quite like you did in Skyrim. Also expect some odd minor fetch quest that are laying around the area. The fun part of leveling is the world bosses, anchor mob fights, and the public dungeons you can do.

Overall a great mmo with great graphics, gameplay, lategame content, early game content, and story line without a subscription fee.

If you want Witcher 3's graphics, buy Witcher 3, not TESO.. (Don't compare the graphics of a single player game to MMO)

The things is that, TESO is an awesome game on his own. But be aware of what you are buying..

In my opinion, TESO is one of the best game I've ever played.. The map is ridiculously big, the number of quest is crazy and they all have dept in it (If you listen to dialogue, of course... like every games). If you want to play alone, do it, if you want to play with your friend, do it. You can do whatever you want in this game. I've played Skyrim for more than a year and in my opinion, I will play TESO for a couple of years cause there's so much to do and it's all enjoyable..

I have never seen a game with so much dept. In my opinion, this game is a GOTY candidate.

However, all that is only my opinion, my best advice for the future player is go watch gameplay video of that game and make your own opinion. But, If you're a MMO player, I think that you should try this game.

This game has been closer to a 9.5 for me so far, but I don't want people to bypass my review like all these 0s and 10s trying to sway the score their way.

ESO has hit all the right notes personally. Beautiful universe, massive world, great art direction, exploration of Tamriel, epic medieval PvP, and great group-rpg-PvE. You can build your character almost exactly how you want.

ESO has hit all the right notes personally. Beautiful universe, massive world, great art direction, exploration of Tamriel, epic medieval PvP, and great group-rpg-PvE.

You can build your character almost exactly how you want. Wield a two-handed battle axe while slinging fireballs and lighting. Be a powerful caster with strong stealth abilities that can pull out a bow when desired. Sorcerer tank anyone? Can't make up your mind? Become a jack-of-all-trades or even a master crafter to supply your friends and guild with powerful gear. There's so many options and styles.

As far as the feel on console, I am thoroughly enjoying it. There are a lot of keybindings and some of them can be a little awkward to use (quick emotes, potions, and weapon swapping are all bound to the d-pad which requires you to take your thumb off the movement sticks), but overall it feels great to sit back on the couch with your hands in a comfortable position and play on a big screen.

The lack of text chat could make or break the game for some. If you have friends that play or are very sociable in voice chat, it shouldn't be an issue. I have actually enjoyed not seeing all the chat channels. It makes the universe feel more real and immersive. It makes trading more interesting too. Players have created "trade guilds" that anyone can join to list their wares in the guild store, accessible for players at any bank location. (ie I have joined one that already has over 200 players in the first week. I'm able to list my items and search for items I want. Sales get mailed directly to you)

Combat is superior to any MMO I have played and I like it much more than Skyrim's. While Skyrim may feel slightly more physical and realistic, the lack of skills, abilities, and spells causes it to fall very short for me. It feels great to aim and swing/shoot, opposed to tab-targeting in most MMOs.

Questing has always been my worst nightmare in MMOs, but I have to admit this is the smoothest I've seen. ESO's compass UI is quite different than the typical "mini-map" and keeps you moving in the right direction without taking up much space. Questing still takes a very long time to reach level 50 (around 100 hours if you're quick), which is good or bad depending on what aspects of the game you're looking forward to.

PvP in the central zone, Cyrodiil, is lots of fun. It's huge scale combat. The three player factions battle for the control of large keeps and ultimately the city in the center of the map. The keeps themselves are massive and require large groups a players to construct siege weapons to attack and defend. It is very satisfying to knock down a keep and claim it for your faction with 100s of others. It really feels like a battlefield. On the other hand, it can feel very "zergy" where large groups of players travel together and clear everything in their path. But when two equally large groups meet, it becomes very intense and fun. Small scales combat can be found too if you look for it. Camping out choke points to ambush enemy reinforcements can be a strong strategy to aid your faction.

I've only just reached level 50, where much of the endgame has opened up for me to explore so I cannot review any further. So far I am very impressed and if you are looking for an Elder Scrolls style game to play along side your friends I would strongly encourage you to try ESO for console.

But after one week, I'm fed up with it. Dull world (looks nice though), repetitive quests and I'm just not getting into this. This proves I'm just not made for MMO games. But this is not the Elder Scrolls game I love to play. Just have to wait for number 6.

That aside, this game is amazing. IF you like elder scrolls, you'll love it. You can play solo all the way through if you choose, but then also have the option to group with friends or randoms. Additonally, the typical MMO mindset of being funneled into your classtype is gone. If your a mage and want to tank, you can do that. Each class has 3 skill lines that are unique to them, however there are seperate (and accessable to every class) skill likes for EVERY weapon type, armor type, crafting, world, content driven (ledgerman) and story. You have TONS of skills to choose from regardless of your class/playstyle.

The entire game is voice acted. Imagine having all the voice acting from destiny, rolled into one quest. thats every quest.

There are also tons of End-Game content that you can do. Most require a group but a solo area is announced to launch this year.

PVP is crazy good, and far better than the PVP you would experience on the PC. I played since Beta on PC and it NEVER felt this awesome. With the soon to be released Imperial City for PVP, this is only going to get better.

Again, ignore all the hate and give this game a chance. It is truly amazing and you will not be disappointed. Unless you get pissed off if the server goes down here or there while server issues are resolved at launch ;).

    PROS:
    Tons of content
    Grouping optional
    Fully Voice Acted
    Constant Updates/Content expansions
    Amazing PVP
    Immersive, has that ES feel.
    Full customization of builds.

    CONS:
No true solo end-game content (yet)
Minor bugs/issues that maybe could have been resolved prior to launch

I don't understand why this game is getting such bad reviews. It is brilliant! If you love Skyrim you will love it! I am a massive Elder Scrolls fan but not a big MMO fan, but this game is just incredible! Great graphics, great storyline, it's smooth to play. After the teething issues with the servers it will be even better. Those who are negatively reviewing it, bought it wanting to hate it!

The game world is congested with ubiquitously irksome precipitous knolls and high ranging mountains, melee type enemies that can land a hit on you with a scimitar while you are at a distance and the problematic inability to guard against ranged enemy attacks by using your surroundings.
Other features which let this game down include the glitch prone quests, such as key quest characters appearing invisible, quest marker failing to guide you to quest objectives, random game crashes and long server queues log in's.
Annoying nuances such as repetitive damage to armour after falling in battle and the lack of mobile repair kit drops, requiring constant traversal to town merchants to purchase repairs, make for poor game design.
The upgrade system is not too bad and gives the feeling of rewarding the player, while the quests when fully operational, play out to engage the player and enthuse the player to continue playing.
Online features such as playing quest's co-op dish out an average experience, but one that works to an extent nevertheless, with the exception of a co-op bug that makes quest characters invisible that should be addressed with future updates.
All up if your an die-hard mmo fan and a fan of epic fantasy adventures this may be the game for you, if you are after a more polished and infallible mmo experience, this is one game to avoid.

It's a cross between skyrim and an mmo, but a bit more expansive on skills than skyrim ever was... This game will never please everyone, because its not a pure mmo or a pure elder scrolls.

So if you're expecting to just rush into the game, put in 100 hours of solo play and hit max level you'll be sorely disappointed. It is an MMO so it is implied that you'll need to team up with people quite frequently and tackle the world together.

The game looks great all things considered and even though there were some login/server issues from the start, the patches have cleared all that up. It's a great game, and it's about time the consoles get a really great ftp MMO.

The quests are much more like fetch-quests and reminded me of WoW. Less back story, but that's not always a bad thing. The community in-game is helpful and grouping up with people is very common. My advice to anyone interested in getting this game is to be patient. I could hardly log in the first two days, but today (6/13) I've been able to log in and out without issue. Frame rates are dropping in heavily populated areas, but these are issues to be expected during this young stage of the game on console. Play on and don't worry so much about the highly negative reviews on here. It's like when someone tells you a movie sucks, you go into it expecting much worse. This game is a fun game and will yield many hours and if you're involved in the community and get some of your friends to get into the game too, it will be a positive experience for you. Expand

I've loved playing Elder Scrolls games since Morrowind and I've loved the sense of adventure and exploration. To me, that same sense of adventure is perfectly captured here. I'm definitely going to get lost in this for a while. It's beautiful. The environments, the music... it's all so well done.

This is just like playing an Elder Scrolls game but your friends are there too! We're already forming new inside jokes and sharing laughs. This is so much fun.

It's not a perfect 10 though for a couple reasons:

    - It's a little glitchy at the moment and sometimes you get stuck in a loading screen for 10 minutes or more, but this doesn't happen very often and has a lot to do with your internet connection.

    - Third person is really the only way to be in combat and know what's going on unless you're ranged.

    - The quick chat commands should have more commands. Something like some Campaign only ones would be nice too.

The game is unpolished, and has all the appearance of an independent "free to play" game rather than one in development for years by a professional audio. The graphics are atrocious, they really are. They look like a throwback to a "good" ps2 game - the textures are bland, details lacking, and the world plain and lacking any sort of detail. Every building is the same bare walls with a few creates and barrels. The animation is jumpy, jerky and again, not what you expect from a modern game. If I were playing this on a table tablet - then I would expect these graphics - not on the most current gen systems.

That said, the game itself is not unplayable. There are plenty of quests, and hours of play. There is a challenge and some reward to be found in taking down the harder bosses. Just expect a mobile - gaming type experience, not a current gen game.

If you, like me, are a make Elder Scrolls fan, you'll but this anyway, and they are counting on that. Once all of us have done so - give it a year or so, and this will more than likely move into the free-to-play realm that it deserves.

If you can hold out, replay Skyrim for that time instead. You'll have more fun, and save yourself £40. You aren't missing anything.

When playing alone, this really does feel like an Elder Scrolls game with some MMO touches. You can get lost in exploring the world, looting, stealing, and all that good stuff you know and love from previous ES games. The skill system is a hybrid of experience gain from killing / questing and the ES system of 'use whatever you want to get better at it'.

The ability to swap weapons at lvl 15 to gain an alternate action bar allows for some insanely deep character customization (there are a TONNE of skills you can branch out on). It kind of makes my head spin there's so much to keep track of. In fact, I enjoy this system significantly more than Skyrim's 'favourite item' menu that broke immersion and paused the game each time you wanted to swap weapons. Now weapon / skill swapping happens at a touch of a button.

The MMO aspects of the game are also nice. Grouping with friends and randoms has been very easy for me. Guilds, and guild stores are great for supporting an in game economy, and we've already made a good chunk of gold setting up a guild store for our guild.

I am also fond of the voice chat they implemented in the game. Yes, area chat can sometime be annoying, but on the other hand, you can encounter some very humorous situations out in the wild. It really feels like a living, breathing world when you run into two human players arguing amongst each other about who should keep a certain quest reward. But if that's not for you, just back out of the channel to ignore random players.

There is also guild chat (so the entire guild can communicate), separate channels for higher tier guild members, as well as group chat. Basically boiling down to: if you need to get in touch with someone via voice chat, you can... easily, and quickly.

The dungeons have been a blast, but I've only done 3 out of the 6 I've found so far, there are 3-4 bosses per dungeon, a dungeon quest, some puzzles, as well as all that good loot.

I also love that the Crown Store isn't pay-to-win. The crown store is primarily for cosmetics and game augments (so you can play any race with any faction). This is excellent. The people who want to play for free can without fear of pay-to-win.

    ---

But it's not all good, peak times in North america have had some server issues these past few days (between 8pm-12pm EST). This can definitely ruin the experience for players, and is always an inherit risk taken when buying an online only game. So the game is going to lose some points in the review score because of the server issues during peak hours.

Some of the quests I've done have also been pretty boring. As a running joke in our guild we say: "go to the white arrow, hit X until you can't hit X anymore, go to the next white arrow". That's basically what a lot of quests come down to. But, on the other hand, there are some very good quests in this game that I won't spoil. They involve solving puzzles, and some even makes you do some algebra which I enjoyed. Overall I would say the questing in the game is Average.

This game is easily a 8/10. With a few tweaks and bug fixes, it can easily become the best MMO for consoles.

Don't pay attention to all those 0 reviews. If you actually read them, you realize that they're not constructive, provide little actual information about the game, or is coming from a PC fanboy who is salty that ESO is actually a better game on console than PC.

Reading at some comment I was afraid to find a game that is a TES game only in the name, I play TES game from 2004 with xbox version of Morrowind and I feel really comfortable in this new online episode.

Combat system is a further evolution of what we’ve seen in Skyrim: dynamic, fast… you can sneak, you can attack, avoid hits and spells, stab, run around the enemy ecc.

You can easily toggle First and Third person view and you can also adjust the visual of both first and third person… and… FPV is perfect for combat system and for the general feeling. I know that pure RPG fan is a little bit uncomfortable with the first person view and with fast action combat but offer a more immersive game-play.

The games musical score and controls.I have played a lot of mmos in the past and i do prefer those that keep buttons for skills to a minimum, nothing i detest more than a screen full of hotbars/skills.That's one area where i think TESO beats out ffARR,despite ffARR being semi-friendly to a game control pad.

    The Bad:

Quests are uninspiring and quickly become a slog,ffARR does it much better.

Although TES games have always had a drab colour palette,it's still sad to see it here, after playing ffARR TESO pales in comparison. The average graphics of the game aren't particularly nice to look at either.

Game performance is horrendous,i've witnessed so many tears and fps drops,it really breaks the flow of the game. The weather effects are also poor.

Although i like the combat controls, combat itself(although i'm still kinda early into the game)is also boring, not only that but it's very hit and miss...i have a stellar internet connection so i can only assume the hitboxes are off at times or there is a problem with netcode.

I've been in 2 dungeons so far and those are passable in their layouts and graphics, too early to tell if they offer any variation or become more exciting.

I wish i could comment on the crafting aspect but i haven't delved into that at all.
I do know there is no auction system and i sincerely hope zenimax revisits that in future.

Character models are very disjointed,no flow to other characters movements.

All the minions/pets cluttering up the city just makes the game look worse imo.

I can't comment on grouping and other player interation either, but if it is anything like i've heard from the pc version that is another big failing.

As for the pricing, sorry but zenimax are ripping the arse out of it.Crowns are overpriced, their sub is overpriced and the imperial edition is overpriced comsidering you already have to pay for the full game. That sub should be half the price before i'd consider paying for it and i'm not taking into account how poor i think this game is.

I couldn't give this game anymore than a 4 from what i've played,i suggest if you're looking to get into a console mmo,buy ffARR,it does nearly everything so much better.

    All in all,mediocre.

The story isn't inspired, but it isn't the drivel I was pushed through in some earlier games.

Still, I don't understand how we can be seeing positive, glowing reviews for a game that can't be played for any extended period of time. Also, I can't fathom how the developer has gone two days without either seriously ramping up capabilities or offering some sort of credible plan for a solution. This may be the first PS4 game I ask Amazon to take back as defective.

I haven’t done any of the PvP or team missions yet. I haven’t made a friend or friends but I know I will and I can't wait.

I play on excited knowing that after 10 hours I have barely scratched the surface of this monumental monolith of a game. Who or what the hell is waiting for me just round the corner or over that ridge. What villages and dungeons will I find, what oddity do I see before me? And who will join me on this epic quest?

Here is a tip, jump off the top of everything; take a huge leap of faith. You will get hurt but you will recover quickly and boy is it fun each and every time. I’m bound to die at some point but I don’t care I can regenerate right where I landed – fantastic!

If you are a fan of these games don't waste any more time, go buy it - you won't be disappointed. This time it’s an MMORPG so it is busy, new, incredibly exciting and a ton of fun. If you have never played before, take a big leap, jump in, the water is warm and you are most welcome.

The world is beautiful with great open expanses with, probably, the best lighting system I have ever seen in a game. The combat is Dynamic and skill based which involves movement and is very well done and extremely fun and addictive. ALL characters are fully voiced and all have their own story to tell with some great detail in quests, caves and dungeons. A very good community. End game dungeons and raids are very good for MMO players to enjoy with a massive amount of content. Over 300 hours easily.

Although the game is not like it's predecessors and single player elder scrolls games ti still has the feel of one. being able to go into first person with vast open zones. Although there is not as much freedom in exploration as in Skyrim, it is still very good and rewarding.

The 'Skill' system is one of the best I have seen in any MMO with the freedom to use any weapon or armor with any class. Classes are also very open and free but all players still have access to deep and meaningful charterer progression.

The graphics are not as good as 'Next Gen' games but that is due to it being an MMO and for MMO standards the graphics are amazing. Especially when you think about the 200 Vs 200 PvP battles and sieges which are awesome.

Another great mechanic is the phasing which makes you feel as if you are actually making a difference to the world you are in. A good example of this would be A quest where A city had been overtaken by werewolves and I had to complete an attack to drive them out. After I finished the quest all the werewolves were gone and the city was filled with friendly NPC's.

Questing is very good with meaningful decisions that can really make you think. Most quest progression is shared although not all quest progression is shared so at some points your group members will be separated from you until they get to the same point in the quest. However this does not take away from the greatness of the game. The main story is engaging with interesting characters and fun missions.

Overall the game is definitely worth a buy for most people and is definitely worth a buy.

I knew, from prior reviews of the original PC version and from word of mouth of friends who played the PC version at launch, that TESO was a very love-it-or-hate-it kind of game. I've played MMOs for more years than I care to admit so I figured I would at least give it a try when the console version came out, especially since I like the Elder Scrolls franchise. The short summary is: II knew, from prior reviews of the original PC version and from word of mouth of friends who played the PC version at launch, that TESO was a very love-it-or-hate-it kind of game. I've played MMOs for more years than I care to admit so I figured I would at least give it a try when the console version came out, especially since I like the Elder Scrolls franchise. The short summary is: I should have listened to my PC playing friends who told me to take a pass...

I had really hoped Zenimax had learned from the months of the PC version and addressed the key shortcomings of the game but, sadly, they really did not. The biggest shortcoming of all is the fact that the game is a tedious slog. I don't mean that in the "the game devolves into a grind" sense because all MMOs fall victim to that. I mean this game is tedious from the word go. You spend more time reading or listening to voice overs than questing. A fetch quest might take a minute or two to complete but entails several minutes of dialog before AND after. It ruins any kind of natural flow the old Elder Scrolls series used to have. I don't mind only being able to roam level appropriate areas as they're sufficiently big enough to not feel limiting, but the standard of "find NPC, read tons of quest text, do fetch quest, return to NPC, read tons more quest text" just doesn't fit the old Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim molds very well.

Graphically the game just looks dated on PS4. Lots of muddled textures, lots of pop in, frame drops, screen stutter, and jagged edges. I won't say it looks like a PS3 game because it would look a LOT worse on the PS3 but I will say it definitely doesn't look great. The gameplay is kind of a hybrid of Elder Scrolls and action RPGs where you can buy lots of different talents (as you level) but can only equip a limited number in your action bar. It works, most of the time, but feels a bit clunky compared to games which use similar face-button action functions (e.g. Diablo).

So far the story is passable (I'll include my class/race/level/faction at time of typing at the end of the review for reference) but it feels like they're trying to shove too much stuff into one package. As a result, story arcs often feel like meaningless leveling filler to get players into new areas. Maybe they'll all connect later down the line, but I have my doubts.

Music is, as always, amazing and sets a great tone. As do sound effects. It's just a shame those effects are tied to such mediocre graphics and clumsy gameplay. The good news is the Crown Store appears to be very well thought out and is, in fact, ENTIRELY cosmetic items that don't create a pay to win situation.

Ultimately, while I like the Elder Scrolls franchise, I find myself ACTUALLY yawning most of the time I'm playing the game because the down time is too frequent and the action simply isn't that fulfilling. Exploration isn't rewarded nearly as much as it is in the main Elder Scrolls franchise and crafting is a shell of what it once was. The social aspects are clumsy on the consoles and area voice chat leaves a LOT to be desired.

Since it's buy-to-play, I'll continue playing off and on but I can't see this being something I'd get into like other MMOs. I have no motivation to really care much about Tamriel or its fate. Certainly not enough motivation to ever spend real money on Crowns for the game. I'd strongly advice giving this a solid rental before dropping the $60 on it to see if it's something you could see yourself playing for the hundreds of hours they're going to want you to invest.

Your options are limited compared to a vanilla Elder Scrolls title with your abilities being locked into your class choice, however, the first person exploration and questing mechanic from the stand alone titles is in full force. Graphically it is weaker than a typical title of the current generation of gaming, however, it is still pretty and the visuals are all fitting for the content. The voice over work is hit or miss but at least everybody HAS voice overs instead of only key characters with walls of text for the npc like in most MMOs these days. The crafting system is well done and a all of them offer clear benefits, even a humble chef can whip up meals with pretty hefty buffs to health, stamina, and magicka (both base values and regeneration rates) that last for a long time (over half and hour).
There are a few technical issues that plague the game though. The frames per second will drop on ocassion in some of the busier home worlds (very rarely when out questing though), there is a problem with the log-in feature where it will show you only have 1 second to wait in the queue to go online to play but the actual wait time is actually closer to ten minutes. I understand being stingy with weapon drops but playing for four hours before I find a basic one-handed weapon and shield is a bit silly, unless I just opt to steal them (which I won't do because I am champion for good). The player base also needs to rethink how to play the title being used to solo adventures, many don't know to let the tank be a tank and take some damage and taunt enemies while they pepper them with magic and bows AFTER the tank go aggro instead of relying on that every so tempting first strike and get smashed as a result for pulling in a major baddie too fast.. On the whole though, this is the only MMO that has held my attention for over 10 hours, and that is saying a whole lot. Especially when, even as I type this, I want to go play some more and explore the vast world of Tamriel.

I highly recommend the game if you are looking for a large open world RPG with loads of friends to join in on the fun, but it still has a ways to go before I could see it getting a 10/10 because of the technical issues present.

Now for the game itself, let me start by saying I am a fan of previous Bethesda titles from Daggerfall to Skyrim. This game tries to capture the same feel and I think does a fairly decent job of it. Not everything can be interacted with, but a lot of it can. The initial start to the game was straight forward and ran as a little tutorial to the game. It was not tedious nor did it seem rushed. This covered the basic of interacting with options, combat and level up / skills. Nothing really yet on crafting and once you leave the area, it's more or less you are on your own. I don't mind that as it does leave some mystery of exploration for you.

The quests have been enjoyable and I haven't had to abandon one yet or got stuck. I've only done solo play and am now level 7. The visuals are decent and sound effects have also been what you would come to expect from the series.

Please keep in mind the game has changed a ton since the initial negative PC release. Subsequently a lot has been improved (include now the PC version) and I think the release has been alright. Controls for the console are not clumsy and easily access your skills and abilities. Combat is fluid and fun requiring attacks, blocks, stuns, power attacks or rolls. On the console version it allows you to create up to 8 characters.

I think a lot of the negative reviews are from people who perhaps have not actually played the console version and are just lambasting it because they are still bitter from a poor pc release? Is this game a 10? Well to me it would have been an 8.5 but I rounded up to a 9 for the metacritic scale. I'm really enjoying it solo, your mileage may vary.

If you like MMOs and enjoyed Oblivion / Skyrim then you should do yourself a favour and pick this title up.

Voice chat - makes communication with group members and those around you very easy. Controller support - While you can play on PC with a controller, support is not native.

No mods - I'm one of those who feel that the exploratory nature of the game is more rewarding without mods that pinpoint exactly where each skyshard and lore book is. The sight of the skyshard light is much more exciting when you see it on your own without knowing exactly where to head to find it.

ESOTU is averaging 5 stars by people who have actually bought and played the game. Got to the XBox store where it is averaging 4.5 stars from people who have bought and played the game. Seeing a pattern yet?

You know i've talked to a few of the people on there and they are satisfied with the new ESO, in my opinion its a great game and I thought it was cool a bit hard at first but when you get the basics down its pretty fun.

Honestly, the game itself is worth the 60$. There is nothing more you need to buy to "win" or get better equipment. You must grind thou. If you are a fan of any Elder Scrolls game this is a must buy. Even it being an MMO, it still feels like an Elder Scrolls game.

Less a review and more an observation, but there's something wrong with the user review system when 1 of the top ten reviews is telling you guys there's 600 hours of content on RELEASE DAY. Thank you for the honest review, traveler from the future.

Got this through today, the update took about 40 minutes, it all depends on your internet service, thats nothing to do with the dev.

But for the game it self, it is poor, i really love the elder scrolls series and i think thats what the problem is, i just doesnt feel like a elder scrolls game therefore producing a feeling of dissapointment, so i tried to look past that and see it for

I now have an issue where i am in Daggerfall and a real world player started a fight with a guard and the guard then attacked me and it placed a bounty on my head as it thought i was the criminal, this was early into the game. it just all feels so chaotic. No structure or enjoyment so far what so ever.

I'm just trying to balance all the unfair 0 reviews. Sounds like there are a lot of gamers still hurt by the PC release. I'm a PC gamer my self but waited to get this on console. Doesn't break any new ground as far as MMO's go but it's a blast playing an MMO on console compared to PC (I've played my fair share of GW2). By rating this a 0 you're simply not being objective.

The best MMO on PS4. People need to understand that this is not trying to be Skyrim 2/online. It's an ES game, and for long time fans of the series there is plenty to enjoy.

I was a little hesitant to buy the game after hearing about the terrible launch it had on PC. But I heard several people tell me that it's like an entirely new game now and that it's great! The game doesn't run very smoothly right now, you'll notice lots of tears, frame rate drops, and very poor hit detection while in combat. The quests are incredibly dull, there is poor voice acting, and some pathetic dialogue. I found myself just skipping all the dialogue because of how uninteresting it was. You'd spend 5-10 minutes talking just to go out on a 2 minute fetch quest that wraps up the mission. I've played for about 5 hours now and still have yet to do a quest that was actually interesting. As of right now I seriously do regret buying the game. I'll spend a few more hours to see if it improves at all, otherwise I'm just going to trade it in. Expand

Wow, after all the hate I seen when the game dropped on PC, all I can say is either the game has changed completely or they was playing a different game, awesome MMO with the elder scrolls lore, what more could you ask for, of course there will be launch bugs, those are being worked out.

ESO is undoubtedly the best MMO on console right now. With a huge, gorgeous world, hundreds of quests and downright awesome PvP battles, it's hard not to pick up ESO if you're an MMO fan or an Elder Scrolls fan.

Great game. Solid story, great combat. The game features around 600 hours of content if you don't rush it and take your time to explore. And then there's also PvP. It is no doubt one of the best and the biggest MMO games to-date.

Bumpy launch will be fixed guys. Have patience! :)

Great MMO with tons of well-written quests and a huge world to explore! Thanks to PC betatesters it has none of the old bugs during questing, there's a better ''voice'' system than on PC, and finally it has the best graphics among MMOs.
Endgame is going to be expanded with new maps, new raids, and it's not only a GRIND like in old MMOs...but a challenge!

Its a good game. Great with friends. Lots to do and explore. Looks good, minor bugs here and there but thats normal on any game of this size. I recommend playing it with friends or people you meet along the way, its an online game after all. Enjoy and dont listen to the trolls giving it 0 score and bad reviews like 0 too. that is stupid.

A couple of lines of dialogue can often be all you’re given before being plunged into whatever mundane task is expected of you; rare are the significant characters and even rarer are the ones you care about. It just doesn’t maintain the same depth of exploration or profundity that the series is known for, leading to a much quicker-paced Elder Scrolls experience.

Even simple quests cause a chain reaction of new incidents and it's possible to see how the player affects Tamriel. But if you expect something like Skyrim with coop-mode you still have to wait for another game.

This is a nice RPG and a bad MMO. The game is playable without subscriptions and it offers a lot of content to explore. Playing together with other gamers still is not really working properly. It is too bad this game does not impress, even though the development system for characters and the PvP are fun.
